Windows RT Functionality
Our company uses a frontend program that is built with Silverlight to access our time sheet data within a Dynamic Nav database. Will Windows RT be able to access Silverlight programs?
Also, will RT have a VPN and remote desktop app built in where we can access the company network remotely?
Update:
I just found an article that said that Silverlight would be available with IE on the Desktop mode but not in Modern/Metro IE app. Is this correct. If so great.

BizTalk Map Test output is empty + EDI 835
Hi ,
I created 2 map's for converting EDI 835 ( Version 4010 and 5010) to Internal XML format.
Version 4010 of map when tested is converted to a Internal format properly.
when testing the 5010 version of the EDI, I get an empty XML, which is below
<ns1:Message835 xmlns:ns0="http://microsoft.com/wsdl/types/" />
I am unable to understand why? Any suggestions please.
Thanks,
Krishna

Are you using external xslt map, if so, make sure you changed the root node in the 5010 to internal xml map?
4010 root node is X12_00401_835 and 5010 root node is X12_00501_835.
Target name space is same for both, http://schemas.microsoft.com/BizTalk/EDI/X12/2006, so no changes here.

Hello Bhava,

No there isnt any external xslt map.
Any other suggestions?

Debug is the best option here, right click on the .btm(map) file, select "Debug Map", it should generate the .xsl file temporay folder, step through the map (F11) and verify why expected templates are not being executed.

Reply:
Version 4010 and 5010 will not generate the same input XML (the root-element will differ etc.), so you cannot use the same map for 4010 and 5010.

Thats right,
I am not using the same map. I have 2 different maps for each.
4010 Map output is fine. 5010 map when tested just returns empty output with root elements.
I started to create a new map again from scratch and did only basic mapping of elements and I see output. I guess something is going wrong in the map.
when I debug Visual is crashing

Please post a copy of your dumpfile as shared file to your Sky Drive with a link here.
For advice on how to configure your system to create dump files please read:

The dumpfile will be created at c:\windows\minidump. You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.
What is your computer make and model? If not a branded computer what is your motherboard make and model?
Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive.

change from mandatory profile to local profile
For the past few mounths we have been using mandatory profiles. Mandatory profile was configured with the GPO "Users logging onto this computer should use this roaming profile path". Mandatory is on a network share. Also the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" is enabled
Now we want to delete this gpo and use local profiles. I've tested this with a test user, and although the gpo isn't enabled for this user, still he gets a ntuser.man instead of a ntuser.dat file. Now i suppose i have a local mandatory profile, because in the user profile settings the status is local.
Question: how can i change the .man to .dat file for every user. And why does this user still gets a ntuser.man file, if the mandatory profile gpo isn't enabled.
Thanx

V3 Intellisense has gone a bridge too far
With the new variable-completion intellisense, MS has gone too far. As soon as you type in $, a very long list drops down.
Admittedly, this gets narrowed down if you are using an existing variable name. But if you are declaring a new variable, the list doesn't disappear when you type in something that is not in the list, if you know what I mean.
I'll include a screen-shot to show what I mean:
Now, IMO, as soon as I type "n", the list should disappear. This is just plain annoying and not very helpful. One has to keep pressing Esc to get rid of these drop-downs!

I find it very convenient to use from the console. If create a one-liner that gets me a collection of objects and then want that in a variable $x, I just hit the up-arrow, add

Thanks for those links, Peter. However, they are talking about argument completion, which, as they say, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'm talking about variable completion. Type this at the ISE console:
$
...and you get a whole list of variables. However, this list does not behave as expected when you type in something that doesn't match the list. It should disappear, but it doesn't.

SBS2011 Standard with PHP and MySQL Not Working
We have just spent over £9.5K on a new server with SBS2011 and in all honesty, it is a pile of rubbish. if we can not get this problem sorted out today, we are either going back to our SBS2003 or moving over to Ubuntu.
We have a MySQL database which is accessible by PHP pages which are located in the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\jobs\output
For a start, the whole system is really slow at geting the infomation from the Database, unlike it was on the SBS2003 and a test Ubuntu server we have.
Also, if somebody adds a new record to the database using the PHP pages, they then go back to the main screen and decide to add another new record, it seems to be stuck, and shows the previous confirmation screen that the record was added. We know the database, Mysql and PHP all work, as they have been tested on Ubuntu systems, and remote web servers and all work without any problems. We have installed the latest version of PHP and MySQL and now, we have removed them and installed the previous versions to see if it made any difference. The PHP was installed from http://php.iis.net
If we open the info.php page, it loads very quick, but, the standard select statement such as "SELECT * from jobs" and its limited to 30 takes about 1 minute to get the information.

This is the same post as you've already made, and it still has absolutely nothing to do with SBS. Which part of PHP or MySQL leads you to think that SBS is rubbish, given that SBS consist of neither component?
Did you run the tests I suggested in your other thread, e.g. compare timings for displaying a page of 1000 records versus timings to display a page of 1000 numbers?
Blaming SBS is imply barking up the wrong tree. This problem can only originate with IIS (specific forums exist for that), PHP, PHP on IIS, MySql, or your configuration.

What "fixes" have you applied if any? A quick google for "PHP on 2008 R2 slow" returns stuff like this:
https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=50410
and
http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?10,563834,563834
As I mentioned previously, PHP and MySQL were never designed for Windows, they have been ported across to it.
You have bought a Ford Fiesta and you're trying to tow a caravan with it. Yes it can be made to work but it wasn't designed for it.
PHP on IIS has to be your first port of call. Forget MySQL, get that working satisfactorily first.
Jim

Reply:
Hi Jim
Like I say, it worked fine on SBS2003, the speed and the way the data was presented was fine," and we got the caravan up the hill" haha.
Yes, I did the test, not like you said, I did them through PHPMyAdmin, and the results were found within 0.0014 seconds, but, they still took about 30 seconds to display while the blue bar in internet explore went across.
I have not applied any fixes, as most of it is for 2008, and we have 2011, so I would have thought it was all sorted in this version, but, I will give it one more go and see what happens
The most annoying part is, it seems to get stuck in a loop for about 3 minutes.
If somebody adds a new record to a database, when they press save, they get a confirmation, and then they press a button that returns them to the main list where the data was saved.
If they then add a nother new record within the 3 minutes, the webpage they get comes back with the same confirmation as the previous web page did, before they enter any data or press save!
Its all very frustrating and confusing.
I just do not understand why it worked fine on SBS2003 and not SBS2011.
The only reason why we got the new machine was for the parts warranty from Dell, otherwise, it would, and it might yet still be working.
Cheers

Hi Paul
The difference in architecture between 2003 and 2008 R2 with regards to IIS is massive, it was a rewrite. So it's not really a fair comparison.
I've never used PHP on Windows, but does it give you the option to run a PHP script from a command line? if it does then try running a simple PHP script which returns records to the screen. That will still use IIS but it will exclude the browser. Or perhaps something is continually crashing and restarting, or a recordset is being closed and reopened etc.
My guess is that that is something not configured, or misconfigured, and there's a timeout. If something is waiting half a second before timing out, that can have a massive impact if you're trying to display something 1000 times.
I've got a 2008 R2 box here and if I get time I'll try to install PHP and MySQL on it later today and see what performance I get. No promises though, as I'm not sure I'll get to it today.

I agree exactly with what you say, something is not configured or misconfigured, but, I have been pulling my hair out with this.
Main problem is, I work offshore and I leave next Wednesday morning to go back for a month. I am setting this up for a friends company, who I set it up for in the past on the 2003 machine, and so, time is running out.
What I have suggested is, we put the 2003 back online with updated data from the databases.
When I get home in November, I will get the 2011 server and bring it home, and see what is going on with it.
but like I say, time is starting to run out this time home
Thanks for your help and ideas, I appreciate it a lot, as I am grasping at straws with this, and trying to configure it over RDC from home as well.

Please try changing your PHP port (not the MySql prot, which is 3306 that's correct) so that PHP is listening on a different port (not port 80). I suspect there's a conflict here between PHP and the standard http://companyweb application that's on SBS2011.

It'll be the port that's set up in IIS. Try defining a new IIS website on a different port. You may have to add the appropriate handlers for .php to the new site or it may do it automatically, depends on how PHP for IIS works.

I still think companyweb is interfering, as that invokes sharepoint.
Please try creating a complete new website, on a port other than 80 (85?) and point that to your PHP test pages. Then try browsing the site on port 85. That should remove SharePoint from the equation.
Sharepoint *may not* be the issue, but there's no harm being able to exclude it from the diagnostics.

Hi Jim,
OK I have done that and set it to port 85, Made an exception in the fire wall and it is a lot quicker now.
But, I am still getting the problem where it seems to be holding a session.
I can see my list of data, I have a button to allow me to add new. I click this button and a new page pops open, I enter the information and press save.
On the same page it clears the data that I have put in and says Record has been added, and is waiting for more data to be entered. I can now click a button called back to list, and I can see what has been entered.
I now want to add more, so again I click Add New, the add new page opens, but, it also displays the same message, record has been added and will not let me add new data.
I can leave it for about 3 minutes and try again and it will work, well, I say three minutes, but I have not timed it, I will give it a go now.

Nice one, I knew we'd solve it in the end. And I think you own an apology to poor old SBS 2011, accusing it of being junk :-) :-)
So, your pending task now is how to deal with the port 85 issue. Do you want your users to have to access port 85 in the URL when the want the web app, or do you want to get it running on port 80? I'm sure it could be made to coexist on 80, or Companyweb could be changed to a different port. But if you're happy to use a different port in the URL then that's probably the safest option.
Anyway, at least you've got something that's usable now, so you can dip your toes in the North Sea (or wherever) next week a bit more relaxed. My brother in law and nephew are both offshore too, one off Brazil the other off Oz (Stena).

If you did want to retain port 80 then you can change the SharePoint site to use host headers, and also have your new site (also port 80) using host headers too. If your PHP thing was for (for example) a timesheet application then you could have your new site looking for a host header of timesheets, and you change the Sharepoint IIS site to look for everything else.
Just another option....

Price of Windows 8 computers seem too high and too underpowered?
I've read about 5 articles now that show various Windows 8 tablets coming in much too high ($500+), are missing keyboard docks (another ~$200 add on), and lack in hardware (using underpowered Atom processors, poor keyboards, and 64GB SSD's).
http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/acer-iconia-w510-1422/4505-3126_7-35472859.html
Did someone miss the memo that great i5 ultrabook computers are available for less than that price right now that will blow the socks off an Atom machine? Am I missing something here? Will the Microsoft Surface bring sanity to the launch and be priced at $499 WITH a keyboard and 128GB SSD's - possibly an i3 included too?
Is uncompetitive REALLY how Windows 8 is going to launch in a few weeks?
Reply:

Agreed. Too much money. For $630 I can buy...right now...today...with free shipping...an Acer i3 (2377M) 13.3" 4GB, 500GB/20GB SSD, 6.5 hour battery, ultra book that for an additional $15 can be upgraded to Windows 8. That's about $150 less, ridiculously more powerful, bigger and better screen, full USB 3, more connectivity options, and a lot more space to save things with boot speed of less than 20 seconds. I could also get a refurb'd MacBook Air for $800 with an i5, 128GB SSD, backlit keyboard, and the best touchpad in the business....and run Windows 8 on that.
Why would I want to buy a new Windows 8 computer for $150+ more and run a god-awful atom processor? Why would I choose an atom-powered plastic POS when I could buy...for the same price...an aluminum MacBook? Is it just to have the ability to undock it and run as a tablet without the keyboard and have a touchscreen? I have never thought, "gee...that Macbook Air would be great...if only I could undock the screen". Never. I guess to each their own.
This all seems like a really poor deal to launch a new and very controversial OS.

Keyboard will most likely be around $150 extra. Interesting that these prices seem to undercut the OEMs offerings by about $100. I'll bet they are going to be fuming mad.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57529276-75/microsoft-surface-pricing-will-be-comparable-to-pcs-analyst/
I'm also assuming that translates to (my completely wild guess as to specs - these are not official prices/specs):
$400 = 32GB RT without keyboard. $550 with keyboard
$500 = 64GB RT without keyboard. $650 with keyboard.
$800 = 64GB Pro without keyboard. $950 with keyboard
$900 = 128GB Pro without keyboard. $1050 with keyboard
In my opinion, they should include the keyboard for free. That would make it an okay deal at that price if you want a detachable touchscreen - because you're still getting an underpowered Atom processor and only USB 2 support in the RT. For less money you could buy any i-series ultrabook with USB3 support that would blow these spec's out of the water. You can't even play decent games (forget WOW. forget Xcom. Etc.) on an atom due to the - again - underpowered video support. RT = complete fail. At least the Pro has an i-series in it, but is about $300 more than a regular ultra book. All in all - a very uncompetitive launch offering from what I see.

Show data from Content Query webpart in List View
Hello,
I am using Content Query Webpart for showing data from different document libraries. I want to show the result in List View.
I don't want to use XSL to customize this view. What is another way to do it?

Protect fast-changing documents
When (Office) documents are changing rapidly, there is always a danger of deleting important data and not noticing before it is too late to recover it.
Twent or more years ago, the late, great, much-lamented Digital Equipment Corporation, had a pre-GUI operating system VMS that handled this danger very neatly, even though the speeds and capacities of their machines were only a tiny fraction of even today's PCs:
- whenever an existing file was saved, a new version was created instead of overwriting the previous one;
- the new version was basically an incremental backup - it stored the changes from its predecessor, not the entire contents;
- each version was stored under a name and version number and could be edited/modified as a complete file quite independently of all other versions, whether earlier or later.
Is it beyond the powers of Microsoft's Windows and Office developers to implement these functions, given the vastly more powerful hardware and software facilities now available?

I have done that, but it does not seem to be a very receptive place to do it! Firefox would not even follow the link without some persuasion.

Add STS Reference - FederationMetadata.xml Issue - Need Help
Hello,
We are deploying a ASP.NET Azure cloud services project which is meant to enable federation with claims-based authentication. We've done this several times successfully with other applications and other clients - however - we're encountering a strange situation with this particular deployment.
In the past when we've used the "Add STS Reference" wizard, a portion of the FederationMetadata.xml file will look like this:
Recently when we used the "Add STS Reference" wizard, that same portion of the FederationMetadata.xml file is instead replaced with this:
As such when we deliver the metadata file to our client to import for the creation of the relying party trust, the wizard on the client side doesn't automatically create the endpoint and display it in the Endpoints tab area.
My question is - what are we doing differently that the 'Add STS Reference' is creating code which says <fed:ApplicationEndpoint> instead of <fed:PassiveRequestorEndpoint>
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
I would like to know whether you are using is ACS or a custom STS. If the issue is related to a custom STS, please post the question on http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/Geneva/threads.

Using template explorer
I've never really poked my nose in on the Template Explorer until recently and now I think this will be a new go to tool I'll use a lot..if I can figure it out.
The only thing I'm using it for, really, is to hold frequently used code in a semi-organized manner. Right now, I have a bunch of .sql code in a sub-folder with a shortcut on my desktop. Been working for a long time. But I like the idea of the Template Explorer a lot more.
The issue I've been having with creating my own templates, is the save. I create a Template for example. Double-click it & an open query window opens up. Cool, so far so good.
I put my custom code in.
What do I do now?
I mean, sure, I can save it as normal, drill down into my C:\users\blah-blah\deeper_we_go\ subfolder & save it there. 2 problems I have with that:
- 1. That's silly to need to drill down like that to save it.
- 2. Even when I do that, and I double click my new .sql code...it's not there.
I know I'm doing something wrong. I'm GUESSING I have to restart SSMS for that to take affect but I have about 25+ query windows going & don't want to go to the hassle of saving those (if needed) to restart to find out there was a simpler way to get my new code to populate when I double-click on it.
So what is this "simpler" way if it exists?
Thanks!

Answered my own question
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
To those in the same boat as I, I'll explain how I got this to work the way I wanted. It's so simple I can't believe it.
(for training purposes I created a folder in the Template Explorer called 'Johns Templates')
1. R-Click on the folder you want to drop your template into and click on New -> Template. Name your template.
2. R-Click on your new template & maneuver to "Edit". A blank query window will open up in your SSMS. You'll notice the tab on this blank query window has the name of your template.
3. For simplicity sake I just hit CTRL+S to save it. You'll notice a asterisk next to your tab signifying that the file has not been saved yet. Once you save it, it will disappear. Also, you'll notice a yellow vertical bar to the left of your code. This will turn to GREEN when the code is saved. Something I didn't read about but figured out by clicking around and experimentation.
Now when you double click that code template, it will open up in a blank query window.
Also, if you decide to edit your code, any changes you make will show a small yellow vertical bar on the left of your code signifying that line has been changed. As in step #3 above, when you save your code, that yellow bar will turn to green.
Hope this helps out someone else. I'm onto experimenting now with the template parameters.

Smo Restore Change of Behaviour in SQL 2012
We've noticed a change of behaviour in SQL 2012 that I thought may be of interest. We use the Restore object in Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo to programmatically restore a database, overwriting an existing database. The (simplified) sequence of events is:
- Create a temporary database DBTEMP
- Backup DBTEMP to file DBTEMP.bak
- Restore DBTEMP, overwriting existing database DBLIVE
In SQL 2008R2 and earlier, step 3. would re-use the physical files for DBLIVE ... i.e. DBLIVE.mdf & DBLIVE_log.ldf.
In SQL 2012, step 3. uses the original DBTEMP physical files ... i.e. DBTEMP.mdb & DBTEMP_log.ldf
This is an easy problem to solve, just use Restore.RelocateFiles to specify the desired file names, but it has broken the existing version of our application.

I was going to suggest an MSDN search for RelocateFiles, but looking at the doco, it's very spartan. Our code looks something like this:
string databaseName = "MyDatabase"; // databaseDir is a directory that SQL has // access to, so we use the same folder as the master db // (Implementation of GetMyDatabaseDir is a subject for // another post) string databaseDir = GetMyDatabaseDir(); // Get full path for the database files (main and log) string mainDBFilename = Path.Combine( databaseDir, databaseName + ".mdf"); string logDBFilename = Path.Combine( databaseDir, databaseName + "_log.ldf"); // Need to relocate both the main and log database files smoRestore.RelocateFiles.Add( new RelocateFile(databaseName, mainDBFilename)); smoRestore.RelocateFiles.Add( new RelocateFile(databaseName + "_log", logDBFilename));

I don't believe that this is a SMO 2012 issue because if you do smoRestore.Script(server) and you get the script
RESTORE DATABASE [DBLIVE] FROM DISK = N'c:\temp\dbtemp.bak' WITH NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10
You get the error that you illustrate even going against a SQL 2008 R2 server (SP1 actually).
I will do some more testing, as I want to isolate what is different, but the TSQL command fails, and really does not have to do with SMO 2012 (if that is what you meant).

Just did a few tests and you're right, Ben. I've tried to isolate this and identify exactly where the change of behaviour happened and I'm now struggling.
Now I'm wondering whether other changes in our codebase contributed to what I saw ... if this turns out to be the case then I can only apologise.

Software Update Point synchronization takes a long time to complete
I'm trying to create a working schedule for the software update catalogue synchronization. I want to run an ADR that applies definition updates for endpoint protection which are published 3 times a day. so I'm running the synchronization 3 times a day just after the updates are published.
problem is, the synchronization take a very long time to complete, and by checking the wsyncmgr.log it shows that each and every time it starts synchronizing all the updates from the WSUS database. and of course this is a long process.
any ideas on how to make this process faster, or is this by design?

I've the RTM and the ADR is working just fine 3 times a day! do you any documentation that says so?
my problem lies in the catalog sync taking longer than expected

Reply:
"Unsupported" does not indicate that it won't work. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh508770.aspx "For performance reasons, do not schedule automatic deployment rules to deliver definition updates more than once each day."
How long is the sync running? There's nothing to configure.
