150 dollars for a Download Disc??

150 dollars for a Download Disc??

Yes, I have a bug to report and it is up where the sun don't shine. Had to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate to be able to do the practice exams for a certification I am working towards. So I pay my $159.00, get my DVD, put it in the DVD drive and low and behold the DVD is nothing but a tool to download all the upgrade files from the Microsoft site. So now instead of an hour or so to upgrade you are talking 3 or 4 hours for all the files to download. And why do I feel ripped off for paying $159.00 for a piece of plastic? What if I needed some files off of the disc later? It seems that it would be cheaper since Mircosoft did not have to burn files to every DVD to upgrade...ok Microsoft keep it up, Linux is breathing down your neck. As Bill Gates said in the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, success makes you lazy and arrogant. You may have happen to you what you did to Apple..

Not unsatisfied but disgruntled customer.

Yea, you are right...... The complaint section about MS products would be huge, but as a Linux, MS dual and sometimes triple booter the Linux complaints are endless. No different really, (except) hackers love MS, afterall why pay attention to an OS with a small market share...... But, that being said, I would just puke in disgust being known to use Apple any thing. I can not find one program I have ever paid for, oher than MS- 3.1, '95, '98, XP....... ever...... try that with that low life sh*t for brain azz Unix sh*t, that will not even load onto hardware, unless of couse it is an outdated piece of crud embedded with Apple code...... F*ck Apple for doing that to Unix, and to all consumers. MS, no limitations....... just buy the OS once, every thing is FREE and runs ust fine on crud and fast hardware of choice. Oh, about your $159.00 ... horrible...... should have been a 25 cent cost, the disk........at most.......

Windows 7 und neue PC Hardware und Probleme MultiProcessor_configuration_not_Supported (German sorry not Speak English good)

Hi Leute

Directories and files which can not be deleted

I have installed Windows 7 on a separate drive, just as was suggested by Microsoft.

After reading the numerous reports on how good Windows 7 was, I gave it a try.

But I was disappointed to see only an updated version of the dredged Windows Vista.

Not only an update of Windows Vista, but a bad one as well with spelling errors, etc.

A few days later, I wanted to start Windows 7 again to fulfill my part as a Windows 7 Beta tester, but the Boot Manager found and error and proposed to fix it.

I did follow the suggested fix, but there was absolutely no way to Boot Windows 7.

Booted from the CD and installed the whole thing again.

Ran Windows 7 Beta for a few hours, and went rebooted my PC.

Only to find out that Windows 7 Beta had placed a directory "Boot" on my C-drive with versions of the files in "x" languages and there was absolutely no way to delete it.

Tried everything, and gave up.

I agree that Microsoft wants to restrict access to some files which can be important for the system.

But Microsoft has no right to impose an user their will and totaly deny access to a file which shouldn't be there in the first place.

If Microsoft allows Viruses and Malware to change infect or change files, the Microsoft should allow the buyer of Windows 7 to cleanup his computer without the need to format the harddisk and install everything again

Disappointed user of Windows

As they said from the start we knew it was a BETA. I have installed it on 2 of my main computers and (knock on wood) have only had a few small things go wrong. My problem will be when my time is up  the uninstall process as whatever Microsoft told me to do is what I did installing it and I have forgot what that was. There are several new things but I believe it is made for someone using everything on the program that is usable. That being said I truely "Love Windows7". Hope your using it gets much better.alot depends on the computer also as I read more from the blogs I see so many different types of computers. Have a better day.

Drag and Drop Not Working Well

Has this been discussed in another thread?

When I try to drag an item, doesn't matter what program or what item, e.g., an email, document, etc., I can only drag it a short way, or not at all, before the the mouse "slips" off. This has the disastrous consequence of sometimes dragging the wrong item to folders unknown.

Thank you.

Hi

I'm not sure where this problem may be coming from?

What type of mouse device are you using, wireless, wired, trackball, or...?

One thing you can try is to right click the file you are trying to move and select Cut from the popup menu, and then Paste the file in the target folder. Or, you can select Copy and then Paste the file, if you don't want to actually move the file.

Hope this helps.

Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta

Yes, it's not unusual for the microswitch under the mouse button to go "noisy" and generate false clicks or drops.  Microsoft mice seem more prone to this than Logitech, for some reason, although I've had to change the microswitch on both makes in my time.

I would try a different mouse before going any further.

I'm having problems disabling the win 7 utility so that I can use the intel wifi connection utility.  Every time I select disable on the win 7 utility (from the connection properties menu) I get a blue screen followed by a reboot.  Any suggestions?  I would really like to try the Intel connection utility.

Connect to TV

I connect the pc to a TV (Samsung Plano wide 100 Hz Digital CRT) using s-video. The video card is GeForce XFX 8500 GT PCI-express. The only screen resolutions I can use are the typical 800x600, 1024x768 not the wide, and the refresh rate is 29 and 30 Hz. I had the same problems using Win Vista.

The thing is that in the past, I use the same TV with an older pc using an ATI VE RADEON video card in AGP 4x slot with s-video and Win XP. I could use wide resolutions and refresh rate up to 100 Hz using ATI catalyst.

I am going to buy a new wide LCD TV with VGA in, DVI in, HDMI in etc in the future, but until then?

AHCI

I installed 7 beta in its own partition on a machine with an AMD 780g chipset.  My Vista installation has AHCI enabled, and also in the bios.  Win7 beta installed ok, but I didn't see an option to enable AHCI during setup.  My HDD WEI score in Win7 is 2.5, but in Vista it is 5.7.

Could this be due to AHCI not being enabled in Win7?  How can I find whether it is or not?  If I wish to revert to IDE mode without a reinstall how would I do that?

Reply:
Its very unlikely to be due to AHCI, there have been lots of reports of peoples HDD's scoring lower in Windows 7 WEI compared to Vista's. This is due to changes in the way the HDD's are measured. This in turn is because of new technologies being supported such as SSD's I know that SATA drives are now capped at 3.0 and having recently put Windows 7 on a 1TB SATAII drive with 32Mb Cache, that is reporting as 5.9. I cant find it just now but somewhere i have posted a link to a Blog with a section in it called Engineering Windows 7 and that explains in more depth about the new WEI for HDD's.

Heres another post with the link i was looking for.

I disabled write caching and rebooted, but the HDD score, when rerun, was still 2.9.  Am I missing something?

------------------------------------
Reply:
Without knowing what type and speed of drive you have, and how precidely the new WEI works i cant say for definate, but i suspect you may find that your drive is at a 'capped' limit as dexcribed in the post  i linked previously.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I also have a mb with a amd780 chipset and when I initially installed win 7 I also had a WEI of 2.9 then I reinstalled the latest southbridge driver and reran the WEI and got a rating of 3.0. Disabled write caching and still got a 3.0 after a few reboots I am now getting a WEI rating of 5.5 whether the write caching is enabled or disabled. So if you have the latest drivers installed you just may have to wait for a few reboots or maybe you may have indexing running at the same time which may affect the hd test.

ANN: SQLCLRProject New Home

Some of you may know, back in the days I developed a tool for deploying .NET assemblies to SQL Server 2005 (or, as it was called then, Yukon). Initially it was just a tool used from the command line. As time went by, it evolved into a project named SQLCLRProject, consisting of the command line tool (YukonDeploy), a stand-alone front-end GUI, DeployProperties, and an add-in (with project and item-templates) for Visual Studio, DeployAddIn.

Anyway, I hosted that project on my Wordpress blog, as well on another server where I kept the downloads. Recently some people have been interested in evolving the project i.e. do some coding. So today I have created a new project on CodePlex for SQLCLRProject. At the moment, I only have the latest binary there - but the source code will be uploaded as soon as I have cleaned it up a bit (removed various silly comments etc.).

So, if you want to play with it, or need it for other reasons, the new home is now: http://www.codeplex.com/sqlclrproject.

Whenever I play MP4 I recieve this error just before a BSOD;

My graphics card is nVidia 8800gts 640mb. I tried:
  • Updating my videocard drivers using Windows Update. According to nVidia, the driver is called "Windows 7 Supercharge".
  • Updating my videocard to nVidia Vista 32bit 181.22.
  • To turn off all sound enhancements
  • Disable hardware acceleration.
All did not work. There is a MP4 decoder found here, but I have no knowledge about this so until someone post the steps or fixes this, I am going to use other media players.

Explorer Layout has wrong scope

It seems that the "Layout" property in Windows Explorer has the wrong scope. It should be local to a particular instance. Now, if I change the Layout of one instance, every future one is also changed. I should be able to have different Explorer instances with different layouts. I have the same problem in both Vista and Windows 7, so it seems to be a design, rather than implementation, problem.

Yes, this is reproducible and most likely due to the Aero Interface, or the following below:

Actually, it appears that these are two different actions. When you click on the title to name/rename it, it actually just lets you name it, instead of renaming it. When you click on Rename on the context menu, it is the old method. I am not sure which I like, but I would rather it be the other way around, or off by default.

+1 for either turning this feature off, or taking it away. I just don't think it is very intuitive. Maybe if we were in a program it makes sense, but this is a system-wide setting, that is very hard to get used to.

Just an update to this bug-report. I have noticed, that you said by using the F2 key. However, it isn't happening like that for me. What I was referring to, that I could reproduce, was when you click on the icon once, and then pause, and click on the name; this is what I thought you were talking about, at first. However, it still is something that needs some work.

BTW, thanks for the new shortcut, :)...

Actually, I am not so sure that I can reproduce what I said earlier. There is an actual bug, because this is not how it was looking, before. It was appearing like it was actually nothing there, but it appears like the text and background was both white when the bug happens. However, as you can see in this picture, the text in the selected text is not the same color as the background, where when this bug happens, it is all the same color.

Now I am confused...

I tried to find if I can reproduce your bug, but obtained the same result I described previously, and only under the conditions mentioned above.

Maybe if you try to remember how did you configured the desktop and which apps where running, then you'll get the same bug and post the result

I believe if you will right click the desk top and open personalize,  then left click Window Color at bottom of page,  left click Advanced appearance settings at mid page,  click the arrow to drop down the menu on the Item bar and choose Selected Items. I changed the selected item color to a lighter shade and chose black for the font color clicked apply. You will now be able to read the text your having problems with.       I think,,,,maybe,,,,,,well I hope. (:>

I have the same problem. No matter if I am naming or renaming and with any wallpaper, it just seems like the text is transparent (not smart msft!). The text appears invisible in areas on the wallpaper with really light colors, and in areas with darker color the text appears to match the wallpapers color. Don't know why this wasn't fixed before the Beta release as it seems pretty easy to spot. Then again, what are beta testers for?

Error running check Disk in Win 7

Has anyone had the problem with windows 7; When you schedule a Check Disk and reboot, it does not start due to an installed app.  I only have Office 2003 on it along with the office service packs.  I even went so far as to do a sys recovery all the way back to just after the office install.  I've seen in other forums that 2003 is compatible with 7.

Network Adapter not found for motherboard LAN port on ABIT IN9 32X-MAX

I have an ABIT motherboard - the IN9 32X-MAX model. I am using the motherboard LAN and it worked fine on Vista until I just upgraded to Windows 7. No Network adapter is shown at all in the device manager.

To try to fix the issue I downloaded and installed updated 32 bit drivers for vista from http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/download_driver_detail.php?pFILE_TYPE=Driver&pMAIN_TYPE=Motherboard&pTITLE_ON_SCREEN=IN9+32X-MAX+Wi-Fi&pSOCKET_TYPE=LGA775
But still the LAN is not recognized after running the setup.exe with that download for the Nvidia Chipset Driver which is what drives my motherboard's Ethernet port. BTW I do not even see a section in the Windows 7 device manager for Network adapters. There is also no way to say "Install driver or hardware" manually - just "Detect hardware changes" - HELP?

While there will be two primary versions available the lineup will have six version world-wide.

Windows Home Basic – emerging markets only

Windows Starter Edition – OEM installed for specific hardware types

Windows Home Premium – Retail

Windows Professional – Retail

Windows Ultimate – Retail – includes all features

Windows Enterprise – Corporate only, purchased through LARs or Enterprise Agreements, includes all features

This is a more streamlined product list than XP or VISTA, with three products available to the general public and four products available to companies.  While there is a Starter Edition, I believe it will be distributed in small numbers, with most customers opting for Home Premium or Professional.
