Blue screens of death
I have receive four (4) Blue Screens of death. It indicates that a core dump was taken. Was this sent to the beta team or saved on my hard drive to be sent to them. If the latter how should I do thi or should I do it at all?

Setting mailto: preferences?
I use a program called GoldMine to access, send and retrieve email. Under previous versions of Windows (at least up to XP), I was able to check a box in GoldMine's preferences and that made it the default handler for mailto: links.
However, I can't seem to make it stick in Windows 7. I click the box, click OK and when I go back, it's gone.
Now, under Win 7, it's even more complicated because Windows Mail isn't even a default application - therefore, there's NO default for the protocol set by default. NOR is there a default way to create a new handle for that from within the GUI. I suppose there might be a way of doing it via a registry hack - but I'd really rather not go there if I can avoid it.
Anyone got any bright ideas? Thanx!

Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set your default programs
From here it will give a list of all the programs you have installed, it should show your email client, select it and choose "Choose defaults for this program", that should then hopefully give you the MAILTO handle.
I tried this with Windows Live Mail which worked fine, hopefully doing the same thing will work with GoldMine.

That's just it... I don't have Windows Mail installed and would rather avoid doing so if possible. And yes, I've been to that particular screen - and the Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program screen - and the option for MAILTO isn't even available.
The available protocol options, by default are:
FTP
HTTP
HTTPS
LDAP
MMS
SEARCH
Note the absence of the MAILTO option.
Under Extensions, there's an option for .VCF - which associates itself with Windows Contacts but there isn't one for .EML files.

The problem is, the version of GoldMine I have is somewhat old. It's vintage 2006 - and since this particular version came out, there have been at least two newer versions (talk about the upgrade treadmill...sheesh) and they only support the current version and the one prior. So while they will likely put out a more Win 7 friendly version, it won't be this one.
The real problem I think has to do with user rights... Previous versions of Windows allowed admin users the right to set preferences in the registry without any issues. I had a similar problem with another app - PaintShop Pro - I'd set preferences, click OK, and go back into the preferences window - and the slate would be blank. I had to run the app as Admin, set the preferences and save them and then the changes took.
Unfortunately, the same trick doesn't seem to want to work for GoldMine. Even tho I'm logged in to the domain as a Domain admin, and I set the program to run as Admin by way of the shortcut, it still wants to bomb, giving me errors on the Borland Database Engine. If I run it without any sort of escalation, it runs just fine.
Ah well.. I'll continue to see if I can get a work around going...

I finally gave in and downloaded Windows Live Mail. The mailto: protocol option has shown up - but still NO joy.
When going to the Default programs and attempting to change the protocol - there's NO option for GoldMine. The only app that shows up is Live Mail.
Nor is there an option to add or choose another application... Me thinks there's an oversight here..
Btw... I could have sworn this thread was put forth as a question - not as a statement.

Install it, reboot
After the reboot you can use the Logmein updater to update to the latest version.

IE8 problem with Google Maps
The IE8, shipped with W7 Build 7000, behaves wrong in a very basic Google Maps function. A mouse click on a map with subsequent display of the coordinates produces wrong results with RC1 (not seen in versions before). I don't know, who is wrong here, but somebody is.
The problem can be seen here:
http://maps.alphadex.de/maps/ie8rc1.html
Click at Berlin, you should get something around 52.x, 13.x. You'll get 52.x, 23.x. Try this with other locations. Not seen that wrong with other browsers.

So forget about RC1, it happens with the IE8 version of Windows 7 too. A colleague of mine gave me the hint with RC1, because my older version of IE (December 2008) didn't show this problem.
So if it is more convenient to you, just try the link with your copy of W7/IE8 and choose a town nearby.

Hi NICKAM,
As a workaround, you can use On–Screen Keyboard to monitor Caps Lock.
To do this:
Click Start, type OSK in Start Search bar and press Enter.
Hope it helps.

NICKAM,
Did you do a clean install of Windows 7, or did you do an upgrade?
In either case, to enable all of your keyboard's functionality, you should use the Microsoft Intellitype 7.0 Beta software from: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/windows7/support.mspx
This software will enable the screen overlays you're accustomed to, and will make sure all of your keyboard's "bonus" keys work.

How do I stop this from happining so I can trouble shoot my Live Tv/sound issue?

Are you talking about the Windows Media Center Update Log that is opened by right-clicking the small Media Center icon at the right side of the task-bar? If so, you can close that by just clicking the 'X' in the top right corner like any window. I should mention that if a guide download is in progress that it will continue until it's finished even if you close the Log window. I have a Quad-core pc and it runs at around 50% usage for quite a while when the guide is being downloaded and processed. That window shouldn't come up unless you have selected it and not appear automatically when you re-start your pc.
I don't know if the download and processing are slowed up if you are downloading listings for channels that you can't receive but I unchecked any channels in "Edit Channels" that aren't included in my cable subscription. Note, you can't receive any digital channels in Media center except those that are sent in clear QAM and you have a digital tuner........Usually just the same channels that are broadcast digitally over-the-air.
Just a thought.............if you have dial-up internet instead of broadband, you might want to uncheck "enable Guide Listing Downloads" in the small Media Center icon in the taskbar. I think Media Center downloads listings on a fairly frequent basis and with dial-up the downloading and processing takes a long time. When I was testing the "TV pack update" for Vista which is very similar to the Media Center in Win7 I had dial-up and had to uncheck that because of the time & high cpu usage were too frequent. I then just downloaded the guide manually once a week without problems.

BUT!!! I have an update on my issue , I don't think its WMC at all that causing this issue , I know my sound card drivers are not perfect so that has something to do with it I'm sure and ASUS promises a new drive this quarter , BUT take a look at this:
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8209/avgwindows7problemfu4.png
If you are able to see my picture you can see that it is not the WMC thats using the core on my CPU its AVG 8.0 Resident shield , and it stays there till I close WMC and the WMC Log Updater closes.
My AVG 2 year license is up in June and they have always been very helpful with their support , I'm going to try and make them aware of this issue and see how they respond. Most likely it will be something like "AVG 8.0 does not support BETA operating systems" or some such thing , which is fine , but at least they will be aware.
thanks for the response , if I can just fix this one issue with WMC and Live TV I can move on.
this OS is ROCK solid for me as far as BETAS go , I WILL be buying this one!

SUGGESTION: The best way to implement the 'coloured' MCE Remote Control Buttons into the EPG User Interface to add extra Functionality
Please see the following link which contains a pic of the EPG Guide that I have Edited in Photoshop to show how the coloured buttons could be used.

The MCE Remote Control to which I am referring to (notice the coloured keys at the bottom).

The Turbo Scroll is a brilliant innovation, but sometimes you just want to be able to skip +/- 24 Hours and easily move Page up or Page down, rather than having to browse up/down through every single channel.
I am pretty confident that many people will find this feature pretty useful.

Scooby, are you using a Microsoft remote? I don't have the colored buttons you are talking about on mine. I can move 12 hours forward/back in the Guide by pressing skip/replay. I can also move page-up/page-down on the Guide by pressing channel-up/channel-down. Does you remote do this?
------------------------------------
Reply:
All the new MCE Remotes including mine have the coloured buttons, but they lack functionality as they aren't really used for anything other than Teletext. Microsoft could really make these useful by implementing them in the EPG Guide similar to the way Sky UK uses them in the EPG Guide.
My Remote does the functions you describe, but for a new user, it would make life so much easier by improving the HCI Design, rather than having to guess & work it out by pressing different buttons.
The coloured buttons make it so much more obvious for a new user on how to do PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN/+24 HOURS/-24 HOURS functions rather than guess. This would DEFINATELY be a interface improvement that many would appreciate.

Okay, I haven't seen one yet. Microsoft remotes, in general, seem hard to come by now. Just judging by the color I've got to wonder if they aren't there for compatibility with the xbox controller.
Not to highjack your thread, but how do you like the new one compared to the old one?

Reply:
I have two MCE Remotes with the coloured buttons, one is a Microsoft and the other came with my Hauppauge TV Card.
The fact that both the newer remotes also have backlit keys makes life so much easier when using them with my projector in a dark room. The keys are also arranged differently in the newer remotes compared to the older ones. T
hough I would expect Microsoft to be releasing newer models for Windows 7 (which probably explains why the current remotes are hard to come by).
If Microsoft is listening, please release a Bluetooth version, so that I can use it in conjunction with my MS Wireless Entertainment 8000 Keyboard.

It does look like the new Microsoft remote are discontinued. I could only find the old ones on the Microsoft site. I found one merchant selling them and they were pretty cheap ($19.99.) I figured I might pick one.
EDIT: upon further review I'm not sure I actually found the Microsoft remote. I found one the looks a lot like the old remote. But I can't see the Microsoft name anywhere on the remote or the packaging, just the certified for vista logo. http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Certified-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B000ST7QPA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1233587075&sr=8-5

There isn't that much of difference between the older and newer remotes. The two major differences are:
1) The Coloured Keys
2) Backlit Keys
The remote in the link you provided seems to have the coloured keys, but doesn't seem to have the backlit keys. The latest remote has the backlit keys and the coloured keys.

I found the remote you described: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/5498.jpg
The only two places I found it were both in the UK. Coincidence? Teletext isn't used in the US.
EDIT: Won't add another post, but since the old MS remote over here already had backlit keys, I'm guessing the coloured keys are a UK/Europe only addition.
Yeah more buttons could always help improve function. There are already some features that have changed the way the remote is used, and the remote is due for a redesign. I think too many button can scare new users too. It is a trade off.

Yep...thats the remote...both backlit and with coloured keys.
In the UK, the coloured keys are generally used for the functions I've described above...be it Virgin Cable or Sky Satellite (2 main UK providers)...I'm surprised the coloured keys weren't implemented into the design sooner....like in the VistaTVPack 2008, which was mainly designed for Europe and its interactive features.
I'm sure even the US users would be able to appreciate the use of the coloured buttons, purely for the TV Guide...so MS should also consider this option for the US.
As a 'new' US user, what would you prefer? The way in which you currently use your remote for the PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN/+24 HOURS/-24 HOURS, or would you prefer the way I have suggested in the pic above? (Please give an answer as a new US computer user, and as a current user)

Media Center does not resume from sleep
Hello,
The Windows Media Center never resumes from sleep for me. Either I set it to S1 or S3 in bios, either hibernate or sleep only, the Media Center is always black when the computer is resumed. I can without problem press start key and see the start menu, then close the MCE and start it again, but until then, it is black itself (I think it still works, as the MCE sound comes out when pressing keys, and gets visible when I switch it to window).
Running MSI's MediaLive, nVidia GeForce 6150 LE over HDMI only, MCE in fullscreen.
Any ideas?

I may have a solution for you to try if you haven't already. I had the same problem....I would open Media Center and maximize it and when done watching it, I would simply go to Tasks>shutdown>sleep and it would sleep ok. However, like you, when I tried to wake the pc it did the same thing. I recently tried something new I hadn't seen in the Media Center menu. In Tasks there was a new setting "Media only" and I selected that and with Media Center at full screen, when I want to put the PC to sleep I can either go to Tasks again and select shutdown>sleep OR simply just click the sleep button on the remote and the PC goes to sleep normally and hasn't missed waking up with Media Center still in full screen since then.
I apologize if you have already tried this....perhaps your hardware is the problem but if you haven't tried this, it may help......I hope! :)

Have you taken a look at the system event logs for the cause of the reboot?
Have you tried disabling automatic restart, so that you might see (and be able to write down) the crash error codes from the BSoD (if the system is, in fact, bluescreening)?
Given that you've had the exact same issue (system reboots 5-10 minutes into a scan, regardless of what AV software you're using), I'd suggest taking a closer look at the system itself, rather than the AV software.
Points to check:
-RAM integrity. A bad stick is more likely to show itself in a virus scan, than it is in normal use (due to the higher I/O load.)
-Drivers.
-Hardware incompatibility (component A that doesn't play nice with component B.)
-Incorrect RAM timings/voltage; RAM that isn't fully compatible with your motherboard. Check with RAM and mobo vendors.
-Overheating. Have you verified that your CPU heatsink is properly installed, and that the heatsink compound is properly applied? Again, AV scans stress the system a lot more than normal use.

Chris

The main page (once it's done loading) will list any recent notable events (i.e. critical errors); the place that you'll want to look for other OS-specific errors (or, if you want to look farther back) is Windows logs \ System.
Look for any events marked by a yellow or red icon.
In the case of an unexpected reboot, you'll sometimes need to look a little farther back (from the time that logging started after the system came back up) to find the actual cause of the reboot.

UAC alerts on files run as administrator
First, I prefer UAC be turn on and working. The idea of controlling what changes are made is very appealing to me. Except on known files.
Second, if I KNOW what a file is and what it's going to do, how can I tell the system or UAC that this one file is "always OK". This is doable in downloaded files, why not in other occurances?
In particular, there are versions of the HP update program that will periodically execute, and each time I get this warning. I know this file, and it should always run without my intervention. I've got other files that do the same thing, and it's getting annoying. But, I wouldn't want any other file to run in such modes without showing this warning. So how do I mark that one file? Or is this not a feature in Windows?

Having Uncluttered icons on your DESKTOP or EXPLORER Window which could change the way we browse our files on Win7!!!!!
I have to say the desktop is very vital to me... I use it all the time for accessing stuff on the fly. I would very much would like to see something to the extent of what they did on the task bar to see multiple instances of a prog! Simply having one icon per type of file... for example one icon for pics one icon for videos one icon for documents etc etc.. We have to normally double click on files in the desktop to open them right? well how about just a single click to expand whatever files are under that particular format/icon.... then.... just select whatever file you want from the list and click again to open it!!!! So you could have a hundred pictures if you please under the one single Icon by just having a popup of whats underneat that file/format in that sole icon, and this could work too for when you use windows explorer to browse your files!!! This would make it much easier to find things if you ask me!!! Now as far as customizing it... they should allow custmizing in several levels.... by format(since pics for example are .bmp .jpg .gif etc) or by having gif's and bmp's for instance w/their own icon if the user so pleases, and allowing the particular pop up of whats under that icon to be customized to pop up in different ways to suit the user... for those that have a few files of a particular format vs. people that have tons of something like pictures or music... and for people that dont really like this kind of functionality to be able to turn it off accordingly too by making some kind of view menu etc.... Well what do you all think???? I know it can be done.... and definetly make things easier to find when you don't want to group things by folders (My pics My Music My Videos etc) because frankly I don't like to have folders for everything I have.. I rather access it as I see it... and the way I see it... just expanding a menu from a particular icon/format rather than having a thousand icons or thumbnails in one window/folder would be nice!!!! Nice and organized!!!! For me that would take browsing files to a next level.... and Clutter NO MORE!!!!!! Just like folders have done in the past just better!!! I have a ton of mp3's and a ton of pics and this would definetly help me!!!!! How I would like it to look in my own opinion??? Well when you click the format of say pics.. a nice horizontal row(s) around the icon used to open the pics or whatever type of files you have chosen to open and have them listed with the name of it when u open it, and closing it by either hitting "Esc" or clicking back on the on the desktop or something else or also simply clicking again on the starting icon used to open it with which could be distinguished by a color or shape etc... or even hovering over to a corner to close that format and carry on!! Well what do you think of my idea??? Comments anyone???? I know MICROSOFT is lurking somewhere in these forums seeing what we have to say so.... LISTEN TO MY IDEA implement this on Windows 7!!!!! Which by the way seems to be going on the right direction for being a beta.... almost no problems using it here!!!! HEHE.... Comments? questions? Please shed some light on the subject Everyone!!! I KNOW IT CAN BE DONE!!!!
Thanks for reading My posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windows 7 UI alterations I'd (in some cases) desperately like to see....
I've been one in the camp highly dissatisfied with Vista, and still using XP (notably w/ tons of little tweaks). Still, Windows 7 shows real promise to me, and I'm very excited about it's possibilities. Overall I'm very happy with the UI, functionality, and overall direction of Windows 7. However, below is a long list of items I would like to see changed, or at the very least have options added to customize. Most of these points are from a compilation of notes I individually sent using the "Send Feedback," feature in 7. So that's why it may read a bit strange... And I know, some are notably very nitpicky... Anyway, I'd be interested to know what anyone reading thinks of these opinions; or if there are any Win 7 features others would really like to see altered/amended/added.
Taskbar -- New Taskbar = Awesome + needs some work. Being able to reorder taskbar items, launch apps from the taskbar, and have live previews has been a long time coming. However, certain ways in which the new taskbar operates seems counter intuitive to me. For example... Why must I hold control to cycle through windows of the same type? The easiest button to use (a single left click) has been wasted on activating something a simple hover will already do... All I should have to do to cycle through windows of the same app is click on that icon -- NOT have hold control while I click, too. Also, double clicking on a taskbar icon/launcher should restore all currently open windows of that app. I like shift-click to launch a new instance of the app. It is easy, and is a good measure to prevent the accidental launching of another instance of an app erroneously.
Taskbar -- For vertical taskbar (docked on L or R) taskbar icons could be presented vertically (longer length than width-- more like a book) and then more importantly, the taskbar could be made (at least as an option) available to slim down -- making the width so that only one column of system tray icons shows. Clock text could be made smaller, could be displayed vertically, could display military time so that no Am/Pm were necessary. I love the vertical taskbar, but it's just too fat. For those very few of us who will use it vertically, these options should be no big deal. I will accept being a second class citizen if my taskbar is skinnier. Please. Also, when the takbar is docked vertically, the orientation of items displayed when clicking the Start Orb should be mirrored... (ie: the search box should be at the upper most part of the start menu, followed closely by "All Programs," and shutdown options should also be near the top of the screen, (not at the bottom of the start menu). That's pretty nitpicky, I know, but it would be a huge enhancement to me personally when using the vertical taskbar.
Alt-Tab -- could it work (or have an option to work) like the "Aero-Peer" view utilized when hovering over windows from the taskbar? That is, as you tab through the items they show on both the Alt-Tab display (which should still always be kept on top) and then would also be previewed alone in the position on the display where they would be restored to if selected?
Jump Lists -- I know they're not finalized or complete yet.. But could they display a list of all open windows of that app above or beneath a separator for the application's specific commands? This would help for the times you only need to see the title bar of a window to select the proper window - this would be especially useful if tons of instances/windows are open and viewing the thumbnails becomes cumbersome.
Jump List -- It could also offer options for cascading and tiling windows of that app only (like regular taskbar offers for all windows)
Windows Explorer -- It could be beneficial if when clicking the "crumb" at the end of a location in the windows explorer address bar the selectable folders also offered "crumbs" to their sub directories as well. It would be easy to add, and it wouldn't hurt anyone.. Please?
Windows Explorer -- Adding tabs to Windows Explorer would be phenomenal. Why don't we have these? Also, it would be nice if the navigation pane could be split horizontally and the user could specify "Favorite" locations in the bottom or top portion of the pane. Similar to the quick navigation bar found in download prompt windows.
Windows Explorer -- Configuring Windows Explorer window options are sparse and lack power user functionality/customization found in XP. We have ribbons/tabs on everything else, yet in Explorer we still have the clunky "Organize" button for our Cut/Copy/Paste commands. Seems silly. I would really appreciate a customizable toolbar in explorer where I could add commands and locations and order the items how I preferred. Also, it would be nice if "Display full path in the title bar" actually worked. Maybe my opacity is too little in the title bar?
Windows Explorer -- Where have thumbnails gone? -- when applying the view setting of always display icons, the explorer preview pane will show the app's icon (windows picture viewer icon) in the preview pane when having a photo selected = why?
Control Panel -- On some extended control panel settings the window should be dynamic so that size is adjustable and its able to be made to fit at least all of the text which is being displayed horizontally - w/o scroll bars necessary. (example of this issue: power options - advanced settings)
Background Wallpaper/Desktop Options -- Add a "custom" check box next to each wallpaper in the desktop background properties area. Then allow for each image to be customized (ie: define specifically if its - stretch, fill, tile, center, etc) possibly also for how long it is displayed, or what time it is displayed (night, morning, afternoon, etc). Wallpapers selected to be included in the cycle, but left "Uncustomized," would default to the parameters defined at the bottom of background preferences page.
Background Wallpaper/Desktop Options -- It would also be nice if there were some hidden windows function hot key for advancing to the next, or reversing to the previous, wallpaper(besides via desktop context menu).
Start Menu/Jump List -- Tried the "Jump List" on "Computer" in the start menu. (I guess Jump Lists are only meant for the taskbar). I'm happy+relieved all the classic options are there; still, going w/ the Jump List idea, it would be nice if start menu items such as "Computer" also offered some sort of Jump List context menu. In "Computer's" case it could be used to dynamically explore the directories beneath it. Basically the Jump List (context menu) could show another entry for "Computer" again, at the top above "Open." However, it could provide an expandable arrow which would then show-- "Libraries, C:, D:, Removable Flash F:," etc. It would also be great if when one of these locations was hovered over it would then offer arrows for its sub-directory tree as well)
Misc -- I've read that you can do this, but when I try I get a "not allowed" circle w/ a bar through it... So I'll say this anyway. It would be really cool to be able to add custom local folder locations to the taskbar. Basically, be able to drop a folder on the taskbar and have it be a shortcut to that folder, as well as providing an expandable/viewable jump list for items in that folder.
Misc -- The release of a "Tweak 7 UI" utility akin to "Tweak UI" for XP (built in or added-on) would be incredible. That way we could also define custom delays for live previews, for hovering over the app icon (which the more I use 7, the more I feel like I'm waiting for the previews to pop up) as well as all the classic Tweak UI items, which are a matter of preference and shouldn't be dictated to the user.
That's my two cents. I'd be eager to hear what others think of my input and/or what else people would like to see added/changed/etc about the general UI and functionality of 7.

This is a really good idea, actually.
I admit I hate the thought of the start menu being anywhere but at the bottom, but just for clarity, have you tried it with "small icons" enabled?
Alt-Tab -- could it work (or have an option to work) like the "Aero-Peer" view utilized when hovering over windows from the taskbar? That is, as you tab through the items they show on both the Alt-Tab display (which should still always be kept on top) and then would also be previewed alone in the position on the display where they would be restored to if selected?
I've been using Win-Tab instead of Alt-Tab lately, but what you're proposing does seem like a neat way to present the previews.

YES YES YES to both ideas!
Windows Explorer -- It could be beneficial if when clicking the "crumb" at the end of a location in the windows explorer address bar the selectable folders also offered "crumbs" to their sub directories as well. It would be easy to add, and it wouldn't hurt anyone.. Please?
Just my opinion, but this one does seem like it would be a bit excessive, since there are other faster ways to accomplish this than using a cascade of drop-down menus.

Display Full path only works in "classic" themes, which is absolutely ridiculous. I like the thought of the split pane for Favorites (just like Outlook 2007), so that the Favorites list is always visible even if you have a long folder list that you scroll down for.
Control Panel -- On some extended control panel settings the window should be dynamic so that size is adjustable and its able to be made to fit at least all of the text which is being displayed horizontally - w/o scroll bars necessary. (example of this issue: power options - advanced settings)
Actually, I'd appreciate the new Control Panel a lot more if the old-style dialogs went away completely and everything was more consistently presented similar to the Display Resolution screens.

YES YES YES!!

It took me awhile to embrace the vertical taskbar. I never entertained the thought until recently. Then I used Objectdock w/ my launcher on the bottom, and system tray / taskbar on the vertical left. And when I started testing 7 I just threw the taskbar up there to see how I liked it, and now I can't imagine going back. It's probably just in my head, but I feel like I'm more productive working within a given application's window when there's no "noise" below it. Putting the taskbar in an area of the screen where it's least conspicuous makes easier for me focus on what I'm actually doing with that window. And I also gain some valuable vertical screen resolution - which widescreens are providing less of, while at the same time most business apps require more classic 4:3 for the best functionality and productivity. To me the taskbar is like any amenity you take for granted. You don't really want to notice it until you need it.
And sorry to rant, but to your question, yes, I do have small icons enabled. But the taskbar still won't get skinny enough to offer only 1 column of system tray icons. I know I'm in the minority on that vertical taskbar request. I'm just very picky about my screen real estate, even though I have a 1920x1200 display. And even though it's probably only like 30 pixels - I just see all of the "wasted" or "blank" space, and it annoys me. I know most people will never even experiment with it, much less use it full time. I guess I just feel like these additional taskbar features would benefit some, and hurt none. So why not at least add in the option to customize?
I've been using Win-Tab instead of Alt-Tab lately, but what you're proposing does seem like a neat way to present the previews.
Thanks, I thought it could be cool. I use Win-Tab more often nowadays as well. It just seems as long as they're upgrading stuff they might as well go the whole nine yards, so to speak. At least make a Tweak UI customization to add in Aero-Peer for windows when using Alt-Tab. Honestly, if they added that feature I would prefer it to Win-Tab, because I could actually see the window fully restored, in position, before I selected it. And we wouldn't lose any classic Alt-Tab functionality. Sure, it would require more resources, and could bog some stuff down on older/slower computers. So you make it an option, not a default. To me, adding this functionality would allow Alt-Tab to give Mac's Expose a run for its money. I mean, the small thumbnails Alt-Tab displays now are well intentioned, but really do little more than Windows 95 Alt-Tab for actually previewing the window.
Just my opinion, but this one does seem like it would be a bit excessive, since there are other faster ways to accomplish this than using a cascade of drop-down menus.
I agree. It is a bit excessive. I guess old habits die hard, and I'm quite used to navigating with the cascading drop downs. I suppose this is more of a "comfort" request than a need. For me personally it would be nice to have the option, but I certainly won't get upset if it's not included.
Display Full path only works in "classic" themes, which is absolutely ridiculous. I like the thought of the split pane for Favorites (just like Outlook 2007), so that the Favorites list is always visible even if you have a long folder list that you scroll down for.
Thanks for the tip. You're right though, that's incredibly stupid not to display the full path with "modern" themes. Just because we like a little eye-candy we don't want the full path displayed? This is really annoying to me.
Actually, I'd appreciate the new Control Panel a lot more if the old-style dialogs went away completely and everything was more consistently presented similar to the Display Resolution screens.
@Ronnie Vernon, Thanks for the heads up. I went ahead and posted my comments in that thread as well.
