If the Scema cannot be extended, the client has to be "manually" assigned to the site. This can be done by adding install parameters:

Difference between assemblies present in bin folder vs GAC
It depends on what the dll is, who needs to use it and is the SharePoint farm dedicated. You need to understand Code Access Security (CAS). Key point is dlls in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache) have full privileges. dll's in the bin have restricted privileges. You can change the level of permissions for dll's in the bin using CAS policies. SharePoint has 2 policys you can use by default: WSS_Minimal or WSS_Medium (same options as in MOSS). You can also use ASP.NET's policies, there are about 5 of these policies in .NET and the highest level is the "Full Trust" CAS policy. You can also create your own policy. Change the CAS relating to you dll's in the bin via your applications web.config.
Only code that runs in the IIS workprocess can be placed in the bin. Deploying to the bin minimises permissios but certain tasks such as timer jobs, workflows, service applications and event receivers only work in the GAC. Deploying to the GAC allows for multiple versions of the dll to exist in the GAC provided versioning is used. Bin deployment can't have multiple versions.
[Solved] Windows 7 Pro backup restore not working
Hello. I've had a nasty disk failure where my 6 month old SSD just died on me. Fortunately the backups seem to have been running as they should. Unfortunately I fail to recover my files from the backup. I've got the system image back, but the failure comes when attempting to recover my files.
I'm running a Swedish Win 7 Pro, so please excuse me if I get my translations wrong.
What happens is that I get a "Can not find the path. (0x80070003)" ("Det går inte att hitta sökvägen. (0x80070003)").
I've followed the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973455 and the workarounds, but it just renders the same result. When in the backup manager, I can browse the folders and see the files I want restored, but Windows fails to restore them, with the error message above. No change if I try to restore to a custom path.
When I look at the manage space for backups, I see two entries.
2011-11-07 to 2012-01-12 61.75 GB
2012-01-12 to 2012-01-16 3.71 GB
Also, when I browse in to the backup directory, I can see the backup sets and the backup zips and when looking in to the zips, they seem intact too.
What should I do?
Thanks in advance!

SOLVED
Path to TEMP was invalid. Changed it and now restore works.

I understand there is no technical reason. I am in a situation where one team is pushing forward to deploy an Ent CA for machine certs, but not really looking at the bigger picture. So if that CA there is a problem with this first CA, than can a second be installed to support User Certs? If not, that would provide ammo to help slow down this team.
Thanks

I am not a CA expert and this is the wrong forum to ask this question, but if you think about it I don't see how you could have two ca's in the same forest since they rely on the chain of authority which resolves to the root of the domain.

Not able to see any workflow in Site Workflow Association list drop down
Hi ,
I am not able to see any workflow in the "Site Workflow Association" drop down while creating the new EPT Type. Only option comes is "No WorkFlow", Though on site fetaures I am able to see "Sample Proposal Workflow" and Dynamic workflow that I deployed from the solution starter.
And I see the features are activated under site collection.

After Activating the feature, you will need to do one more step.
Click on Site Actions >> Site Setttings >> Workflow Settings, And click on Add a new workflow. And then set up the workflow that you need using one of the workflow features you have available.
Once you do this, then you will see the workflow in the drop down.

Deploying SharePoint server infrastructure is a complex task, which requires many information.
At first, which version/edition of SharePoint will you deploy? SharePoint Foundation 2010, Server 2010 with Standard Features or Enterprise Features? Will you also use Office Web Applications? Project Server? FAST Search for Sharepoint?
The steps involved are dependend also on your requirements for high-availability and scalability. How many users will use your SharePoint Eviroment?
You can check the requirements and some info about SP Architecture on these links

SharePoint 2010: Content Types
Hi,
We have a solution based on publishing content types from a content hub to other site collections. These content types are used in site templates, which are used to create for different types of sites.
We ran into a problem with our site templates, however. Because we uploaded our document templates into our content types, our resulting site templates are very large (200+ documents @ 500kb each), as the site seems to import the template from the content type as soon as you associate the content type to a library. It seems that SharePoint has a limitation where this is concerned, as with 10+ site templates each about 30MB in size, site creation went from nice and quick to taking about 2 minutes to create a default, Team Site.
We have an incident open with MS on this one, but we have decided to try and work around the problem due to time constraints and urgency. What we have done was to move our templates to a library, and link the content types to the documents in this library. However, it seems because we have uploaded a document into our content types before, they stay there! Even if I change the setting for the content type to have a linked template instead of an uploaded one, the previously uploaded document template STAYS attached to the content type. I can see this in two ways
- If I attach the content type to a library in a site, and I open the site using SPD, I can see the document template in the library\Forms folder
- If I save the site as a template, and then open the template file as a cabinet file, I can see resulting document in the WSP package
I have tried
- to go to my content hub, to the _cts folder in SPD and remove the document from there, but it just recopies it from somewhere else (the _Cts folder stays clean, but in site collection that contains a library that I have attached the content type too, the document is copied back)
- go to the site where I have my document library, and remove the template from the library\forms folder, once again the template is simply copied back when I republish my content type from my hub.
So the template is stored somewhere, which I cannot find.
This is very frustrating, hopefully someone has any ideas :)
Thanks
Nico

I have in extreme cases in the past, cracked open the database on these kinds of issues to see if I can find a row in a table somewhere that isnt getting deleted. I know it is not supported to modify the database, but in this case you are just looking for records really.
(Almost) Everything in SharePoint is stored somewhere in SQL server. if something isnt being removed, then its stuck in a table somewhere. And yes, I fully realize for anyone reading this that the wrong move could cause a lot of issues.
Of course you would not do this in production. I would migrate the content to a dev farm and if you do find something helpful in this manner, make sure you completely test the site afterwords. Utlimately, you may find this course of action too risky to place back into production. If you find something though, you can always send it back to Microsoft as part of your ticket and speed their process along hopefully.
------------------------------------
Reply:
- If you upload template into a content type on a site level, the document is stored in the /_cts folder of that site, in a sub-folder with the same name as the content type
- When you publish the content type, this /_cts folder is also copied, along with the contents, to all other site collections
- When you then associate a content type to a document library, it will copy the template files from the /_Cts folder to the /forms folder of the document library
- When you change the template for the content type to be a linked instead of attached document, it does NOT remove the file from the /_cts or /forms folders.
- Even if you remove it from /forms and from /_cts in the content hub, when you republish content types it will copy it straight back – this was the step I missed. You have to go to each site collection, to the /_cts folder, and remove the template files from there.
- This was a little bit tricky, since the only way I knew off to get to the /_Cts folder was using SPD, but we have Project Server installed, and the PWA site for Project Server does not allow you to edit it with SPD. Enter SharePoint Manager 2010 - something that we have been using to manage content type dependencies. With this I could get to the /_Cts folder and start removing the files.
- Obviously I built some PowerShell stuff to help me with the removing in the step above, once I knew it seemed to work :)
this seems to do the trick, I did a test with a subset of content types which was very positive, and am now doing the same with all of the content types (takes a while to publish, we have a LOT of content types)

Office Shared Tools Required for Installation with Excel and PowerPivot
If you don't want to install the entire Office suite but you want to use PowerPivot, make sure you install Excel 2010 and Office Shared Tools. The PowerPivot add-in requires VSTO and this is only installed when you install the Office Shared Tools.
If you only installed Excel 2010 and now have difficulties using PowerPivot, please do the following:
1. Uninstall Office14 and PowerPivot.
2. Reinstall Office14 and include Office Shared Tools.
3. Reinstall PowerPivot.
This should fix the problem for you.

I have installed Office 2010 32bits trial version from the downloaded installer file.
To do so i needed to login with my Windows Live ID account and go to My Account, previously i clicked the Try Button to get the trial version, in My Account it was the Evaluation Version of Office 2010 ready to get downloaded, then i clicked download and went to a page that has a hyperlink that says Advanced Options, clicked it and it displays a popup with the options for downloading the different versions installer files, so i get the 32 bits one.
I´ve installed office with the option to keep my older office 2007 version and with the Shared Office Features marked for install, like it says at the requirements an the www.powerpivot.com site. But the powerpivot for excel installer says that i have an error of versions (64 32 bits) or missing Shared Component feature, and i´m certainly i downloaded de 32 bit version powerpivot installer, and i´m on a 32 bits environment (windows 7 / office), and with the downloaded office 2010 trial installer i checked the Share Features to be installed too.
So i may think that there is an additional requirement that is of having both office 2007 and 2010 on the same machine, the installer won´t work, is that correct ?

Seems to be problem in the DHCP & DNS component of SBS 2011
Hi everybody

Hi Jkazama
Thanks for your support and when I isolated the server from the rest of the network during the off production hours, I connected my pc and the server directly to a 8 port switch.
Initially, when my pc started and logged in the domain it took a long time for me the same duration like the previous issue ( when this problem started before one month) .when the desktop screen is reached in my windows xp pc , I checked the status of the network icon for the ip address.I found there is no ip given by the server. So I restarted the dhcp service in the server and repaired the network icon in the pc.I got an ip leased from the server.I browsed the server and it showed all the files and folders.
Now I enabled the disabled policies as per your advice and checked. It worked without any problem. The connectivity issue is solved by this moment assured.
Now when I tried to browse the internet, it didn't connect to internet.Immediately , I ran the nslookup in the pc which gave me the error dns server related.
So I restarted the dns service in the server and everything is ok now.
This is what I came to the conclusion there was some problems in the DHCP & DNS part of the SBS 2011.
Anyhow my one month thought lingering in my mind got solved .Thanks for your suggestion Jkazama! Keep the spirit!
Thanks & Regards S.Swaminathan Live & let others live!!!

Why Office isn't for 'beancounters' alone (real life experience)
Context: I'm running a small firm which is currently in the process of taking over the hosting facilities of another company. To that end I've been copying dozens of websites from 3 physical servers onto several virtual servers hosted elsewhere. Although I had a plan of action setup; last week in the middle of the project the major server (running most websites) broke down. And that's when all hell broke loose. 25+ customers in trouble who needed to be informed and their problems needed to be resolved and only myself around to do it (one man company).
There are still a couple of issues to be addressed at the time of writing but most of those only require some time and effort. Still; I've been going at it for several days now (this is NOT your average 8-hour daytime job!) so now its time for a little R&R, a good night sleep and then back to duty.
What is the most important aspect in this situation besides solving problems?
- Keeping customers informed about what is going on.
- Keeping track (overview) of what needs to be done.
- In addition to the previous point: keep track of what has been done (and how!).
- Making sure to document all solutions (when working under stress its easy to forget something over night).
Bold statement: I dare say that I couldn't have done it without Office 2010, and that is the story I'm going to share here. My own story is that I'm by far a 'beancounter' but a sysadmin by heart.
Ok. Due to the problems at hand I sped up the migration process and started copying sites and data over onto other servers as long as the server was still responsive. Webmin played a bit role here too, but right now I'm focussing on Office 2010 (expect a Webmin success story elsewhere).
First action: informing customers.
Using Outlook 2010 and Business Contact Manager I got all customer contact information right at my fingertips. I needed to send out a global warning about what was going on fast. Now; the worst thing to do is to create an e-mail, address it to one customer and CC the rest. It may sound like a good idea; but always think about privacy. Does 'customer A' like his (perhaps private?) contact information shared with 'customer B' ?
BCC: Blind Carbon Copy. Here is where Outlook starts to shine. Click "new message", then click on "To" or "CC" and and the "contact person" screen comes up. Which allows you to select contacts for "To", "CC" and "BCC". Better yet: Outlook can skip the 'To' address if you already have addresses in the BCC field! So you sent out a message to several people without sharing any of their addresses with it. First problem solved (I know for a fact that Thunderbird cannot do this!).
Second action: Keep track of problems.
At the time of writing my e-mail all websites were copied, customer e-mail had been re-routed and copied over but people would soon notice that their website had issues. I had spotted some myself but hardly everything (in 1.5 days (I worked all night long) thats impossible with 25+ websites).
So I could expect customer complaints. Either by phone or by e-mail. Phone wouldn't be a problem since I already had that one covered by OneNote. Talk to the customer, write up details in OneNote and then address those at a proper time. Doesn't have to take up too much time. Heck; even if I need reminders then I can easily link my OneNote snippet with an Outlook follow up (which I've explained in a previous post).
But what about e-mail? I can't simply think "Ok, got it" and continue to work without giving some kind of feedback. But giving feedback would also mean not working to solve problems. Time is key.
First idea: automated replies. People sent e-mail, Outlook picks it up and sends a reply. But what would happen if I needed more information? People would then e-mail me info and immediately be greeted with an automated reply again which could confuse them. So on second thought; I'd better not.
Second idea: sent a quick reply "ok got it", move the message to a separate folder (to keep track of problems) and continue work. Moving stuff manually while working under stress will cause problems. Maybe not right now, but eventually you will slip up. And automating was once again a bad idea; I only needed problem reports marked.
My solution (not claiming its the best, but it worked miracles for me): "Quick steps":
See the "LoSoCo (re)actie" ? That's what I'm talking about; once again Outlook to the rescue. Now; I decided against copying e-mails to a separate folder because I feared it might actually confuse me eventually (going straight on without sleep... you will lose focus here and there). As such I decided to use another cool Outlook feature: Categories. This allows you to apply a 'tag' to e-mails, which will then allow you to keep track of them.
And so the idea was formed. And because you can also assign shortcuts to these 'quick steps' it would become very easy to respond to a problem report as fast as possible while also making sure that the customer wouldn't feel left out:
Now, to take a step back for those of you who don't know "Quick steps": This allows you to chain together several actions which need to be performed on an e-mail. And the beauty here is that it can be triggered with the press of a key.
SO.. an e-mail comes in, I spot a problem report which hasn't been addressed yet and simply hit control-shift-5. The customer gets an automated respons which explains that I read his report and will address it within a couple of hours. Then it marks the problem with the category "@openpost" which allows me to keep track of problems which I haven't solved yet. Finally it creates an Outlook task just to make sure that should I do manage to overlook the problem (checking categories is still something to do manually) then I'll get reminded of it the next day anyhow.
Third action: Keep track of what has been done (and how!).
Obviously I'm not going to share company information, but lets just say that an enforced move from a website running on PHP4 to an environment using the current PHP5 can sometimes cause issues. Solvable issues, but still.
OneNote to the rescue here. A lot of websites used the same code and libraries, so as soon as I discovered that certain changes to a php library (php file) were the solution to the problem, all I had to do was keep track of that solution. When selecting something in PuTTY (a Windows SSH / Telnet client) it will immediately get copied onto the clipboard. So only a mere Win-N (fire up OneNote) and paste was enough to save the changes I did.
And don't forget about searching for answers. I'm a sysadmin, not a PHP programmer. So in certain cases I had to rely on Bing and Google to find answers. When using MSIE its very easy to store possible candidates since MSIE allows me to send a whole webpage to OneNote with the click of the mouse.
Now all that was left to do was to inform the customer and clear the previously set category (by simply clicking on it, by default that clears assigned categories).
SO basically; both Outlook and OneNote were key factors here. Even the documentation part was completely done using OneNote.
To me this is solid proof that Office 2010 can also support 'techies' much more than they might realize. Heck; the direct Office competition (which I sincerely respect, make no mistake about it; you will never see me bad mouthing the OpenOffice project) simply cannot handle certain aspects which Office 2010 can. For starters; OneNote is something exclusive for Office 2010, the competition never tried to come up with something similar (which I personally consider a major loss on their part).
Alas.. There you have it. Real life story.
I don't claim that I came up with the "perfect" solutions for the problems I had to face, but I do dare state that I couldn't have done this so easily without Office 2010. That I strongly believe.
With kind regards, Peter

Required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing ....
I have some feedback on my first go round with a Vista Install. On both the x86 and x64 editions I was stopped with the following slightly misleading message:
Required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing.
Eventually, after updating the firmware on my DVD drive and scratching my head a few times, it occured to me that it probably meant the IDE controller driver was needed, not some "drive device driver". Sure enough, I put the XP 64-bit driver for my ITE IT8211 ATA/ATAPI Controller on the root of a floppy, install finds it, I choose it and click next; all was well. IMHO the message should have been something more like:
Windows Install could not load the CD/DVD drive that contains the installation media. Please provide the necessary drive or controller device drivers provided by your manufacturer.
Next, it suddenly prompted me with another unhelpful message:
No new devices could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media.
So, did my driver fail? Did the driver for my controller not take? No, actually it had loaded the ATAPI controller correctly and was now interested in the SATA drivers for the HDD. It only took me a minute to figure that out, but a more novice user would find this confusing. It should say something like:
Windows Install could not locate a storage device to install Windows Vista on. Please provide the necessary drive or controller device drivers provided by your manufacturer.
It is a small thing... but helpful prompts go a long way!

Well I tried to install Vista RTM and got the same message. However I use Asus P5W DH Deluxe board. My 2 Raptors are in RAID0 that doesnt require any drivers.
What confuses me is that I could install RC without any problems but no luck with RTM version (is legit). I had to install XP and then upgrade just after and all went ok. Xp was installed without any drivers. Now I wonder if there is any way to install Vista from USB HDD?

Also, I don't have a floppy drive, will that pose a problem?

I know how you feel. I've had 3 sleepless nights on this one. As an OEM I'm so far advising my customers to use XP - OK it is not that secure and eats up resources but hey, at least it loads and performs setup OK.
Shame we can't sue MS for lost man hours due to their inability to debug before launch. But Hey Ho, Us Brits will stuggle on regardless....not a chance... see the revolution start here.
So we still have the "No CD/DVD device drivers" problem.
Firmware has been upgraded, MB driver/software disc has been installed and scanned(manually and vista setup), DVD drive updated, yet still Setup asks for drivers (in previous versions were included!!!!)
Why can't I bypass the CD/DVD ROM driver? why do MS assume I need one? OK the install disk is DVD but I'm a system builder and use disk image. not all my hardware has a DVD drive, as some of my customers can't afford the additional costs.

Have tried so far:
* Connecting DVD in cable select as master and slave, and setting it to master and slave.
* Searching for drivers for the DVD
* Searching for drivers for the main board ATA controller
>Found some, put them on a USB drive, vista located them with the 'compatible with my system box checked', pressed next, 'Cannot find any new devices' message. ><
Next thing on the list to try is pull a DVD out of another machine and try it, but I don't see why this one shouldn't work.
*Intel Board with (D1 something) ATI 200X onboard graphics and ATI 200X chipsets
*512 RAM.
*Sony DDU1615 DVD-Rom (IDE)
*2 HDDs on IDE.
>160G slave
>40G master
>Trying to install Vista on the master, XP is loaded on the slave.
*Socket 775 2.8 Celeron Processor
Sorry about the lack of details, doing this from memory atm.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've searched very hard for an answer to this one and come up empty-handed.

Having the same problem using an old NEC DV-5700A DVD drive. However if i exchange the DVD drive for a more recent model DVD drive (NEC ND-3550A) the problem disappears and Vista installs without problems.
Have tried all combinations of master/slave and cable type's but no change.
The only difference i can think of is the WHQL certification. The old drive misses the WHQL. Could it bee that Vista refuses to recognize an uncertified ATAPI drive as a generic ATAPI DVD drive?

What I have found out so far, is that the Northbridge Filter Driver on ATI chipset motherboards may be causing this issue, as it is for Me on my system, and asus A8N32-SLI DELUX, So, there is another fix i found somewhere that editing the registry, fixed it one time, however, a reinstall of the lastest Catalyst Drivers, Blew the CD-roms off the system again!... Freaking a.... I would not be so hastey to yell or blame microsoft, since in this particular example, its not their software that did it... however, there should be a common fix,./ knowledge of this issue by now... Now to just fix it, or work around it...I'm working on that one still... Thanks.

I found that the reason i was getting this message for the drivers message. Your cd/dvd drives (if you have more than one like me) might both be set to "master" or "slave" look on the back of the drives, you'll see a few prongs with a little plastic piece. move one of them (usually the burner is the slave) to slave or if both are slave move one to master. basically you need to move one of them to the opposite. so you should have one 'master' and one 'slave'. then place the installation cd in the 'master' drive. and install it. good luck. worked for me after hours of frustration.

The only fix I have found when you get this slow install then the error is use a newer better DVD drive. In my case I ditched the ancient CDRW/DVDROM drive I was using for a newish super multi DVDRW 16x from LG and the problem solved itself. I spent hours on jumper settings, cable positions and every concievable other thing. I had to concede that that drive was just incompatible with vista's installer.

(weird, that my (2001) WinXP Pro(slipstreamed of course) has no problems on the latest of PC Harware platforms)
and worse, with Ultimate 64-bit, it doesn't matter if your DVD drive is old or new !
-I dont get it? is this all a combination of drm/hdcp/M$ doesn't want to pay Hardware manufactures for drivers anymore ?? or, they expect evryone to donate their drivers FREELY to M$
That "stuffed" puppet of Bill Gate$ (whats his name again?) Steve Bummer, or Bauer ? -anyway send them all on a free demonstration of a Solaris "Jumpstart", or Linux "kickstart", or even a FreeBSD "sysinstall"
-seriously nuthin could stop these "FREE" as in air NetOS's from installing anything (if they just had all the drivers).
-sadly except for a few good MMO Games-
...WELL, on the other hand, M$ is getting paid ! with your HARD-EARNED MONEY to provide this solution and where is it ?
Its shamefull that this silly issue ever became an issue at all of the consumers' expense. bloody sad!
-hopefully, I'm trying "vLite" (its Freeware)to integrate/slipstream all my drivers onto a copied DVD master image ...but so far it aint quite there yet -or its me.

You must make the following changes before installing Windows
- Close Windows installation and contact the device manufacturer for updated driver software for these devices:
- IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Primary IDE Channel
- IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Secondary IDE Channel
- The compatibility report will be saved to the current Windows desktop.
- These issues do not prevent your upgrade, but some applications and/or devices might not work once your upgrade completes.

Freak, My freaking Vista installation Lost its freaking DVD drivers again!!!!..
this is the 3rd time its happened to me..
I fixed it myself, the first time with a registry Hack.... /fix....
2nd time, i re-installed vista, (Bad News by the way( even though i chose to overwrite the existing "Windows" with a "clean" version, I figured out, Vista still used some of the settings it had in the Original Installation... For example
A ACL driver for audio that I did NOT want in the original, the supposed fresh install kept...
Now I uninstalled Diskeeper, and it freaking wiped out my CD Rom Drivers with it....***!!>..
not again!...
This is very annoying, and common, its not like this is a new freaking thing if its happened to me 3 times now...
their Repiar" should be able to fix it by now...
But no.... its not really a "driver" issue, even though the error code in device manager says Device Drivers Missing...
Its a Freaking Registry *** uip....
Now i have to go find that fix again... and hope i can get vista to find my Drivers again... ...
Son of a *** and ***.... Its freaking annoying....
WTF when u uninstall a Drive related product, does this always happen? First time it was when I uninstalled a Version of Nero Burning Rom....
2nd was when I uninstalled Roxio CD software.. and now...
Diskeeper... WTF any time uninstall a drive related product, it destroys the drives also????
I wish I could shoot someone right now....

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Mobo
2 x IDE DVD and DVDRW
1 x IDE Hard Drive
2 x Stripped SATA HDD
1 x Sata HDD
Seems its the chipset on these asus boards that is confusing windows!

So here's the "Ultimate" fix -pardon the pun
for that "...CD/DVD required device drivers are missing..." on my Vista 64 new install.
-the web-links mentioned here provide a very good understanding, for me anyway, for
dealing with any automated Vista installs.-and many thanks to those Authors.
I went into some over-detail here, but hey, step-by-step feedback is good,
especially when it includes corrections.
I think, during the very early install phases of a PASS1, the "boot.wim" a mini-Vista boot image
is loaded with a bare skeloton of drivers into a virtual-memory-CD-Drive,
(very similar to "md" Memory Devices used in unix).
This however, is just enough to begin installing the big PASS2(nonWinPE) "install.wim" Vista image
onto your HD via your DVD-drive.
-But, if for instance, the virtual mini-Vista image(boot.wim) can't load the
"...required CD/DVD device drivers..."
for example, the newer SATA DVD-Drive/controller(s), then it needs to find them via
a loadable floppy, USB-flash drive,...which is where You come in -compliments of Microsoft.
So, to permanently fix this you basically "mount" your copied ...\sources\boot.wim,
inject the required drivers (.inf files), unmount it, and then "re-image" your
new (OEM) DVD master on a blank DVD.
-and here's the "General" HowTo driver-injection article I found (for Vista 32), and early Workstation deployments,
which worked for me.
http://apcmag.com/5436/customise_windows_pe_2_0
----------------------------------------------------------
Here's my hardware/OS:
-Microsoft Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS(purchased separately (brand new & legit), so as to Install "fresh" on my:
-Asus P5B-Premium Vista Edition motherbard; (no its not a joke, the board is actually called Vista Edition)
(with the onboard Intel ICH8R SATA controllers,.. and a Jmicron JMB363 PATA/SATA controller)
-Intel Quad-core CPU
-(2) Raptors striped across the ICH8R Sata controllers
-(1) Pioneer "SATA" DVR-212D DVD/CD on the Jmb363 sata controller(AHCI mode in BIOS).
---------------------------------------------------------
Note:
(my steps below are all for an "Ultimate Vista 64-bit" unattended driver injection,
Vista 32 will be slightly different $PATHS, however the info-link mentioned in
http://apcmag.com/5436/customise_windows_pe_2_0 is for Vista 32, and is a good quick-reference guide
for modifying Vista "boot.wim" image files
Important! -> You will need your (OEM) DVD, and the Windows "WAIK" installed from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c7d4bc6d-15f3-4284-9123-679830d629f2&DisplayLang=en
-its a 998 Meg (mini)Vista DVD image file download, which you'll burn on a blank DVD and install it.
-Included with it though, is both the:
"Windows System Image Manager"-WSIM app- (which is primarily used for modifying ...\sources\install.wim image files).
and,
"Windows PE Tools Command Prompt" -PETools app- (which is primarily used for modifying ...\sources\boot.wim image files).
You'll only needed the PETools part of WAIK for this scenario.
Here's the steps I used:
1./ copy entire (OEM) DVD to D:\DVD, and make a couple sub-folders under D:\DVD
named "Drivers" and "Mount".
2./ In my case, I copied all the required (Intel and Jmicron)SATA contoller driver files to D:\DVD\Drivers
(*.inf/cat/sys files - but no exe's)
3./ Share D:\DVD with "full-control" permissions for yourself/Admin.
4./ if you have Vista 32 -skip to step 5./, otherwise, open an Administrator command shell
from "Start" -> "run" type cmd but instead of hitting "Enter"-key, hit the "Ctrl-Shift-Enter"
SETX Imgx "%Programfiles%\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64" -m
5./ from your "Start" -> Programs" -> "Microsoft Windows AIK" -Run as Admin the
"Windows PE Tools Command Prompt" shell.
6./
(cd C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64)
imagex /mountrw D:\DVD\sources\boot.wim 2 D:\DVD\Mount
(cd C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools)
peimg /inf=D:\DVD\Drivers\*.inf /image=D:\DVD\Mount
(cd C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64)
imagex /unmount /commit D:\DVD\Mount
(cd C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools)
oscdimg -n -m -b"%Programfiles%\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\boot\etfsboot.com" D:\DVD D:\Vista64.iso
7./ thats it, burn that .iso onto a DVD blank with your favourite 3rd-party app.
note1: (the cd ... in brackets are there for brevity, although the PETools command shell actually
adds those $PATHS to your environment automatically, depending if you've got x86(32-bit), or amd64(64-bit)
-also since I just don't fully trust Microsoft automatically anymore, I prefer to "cd" around.
note2: in Step 6./ the "-m" switch in the oscdimg command seems to be an undocumented switch, however
it is required to create the DVD image size properly.
also see
http://firegeier.unattended-sponsor.de/en/create_iso.html
-very well explained site on unattended Vista installs in general.

well i came across this A required CD/DVD drive device is missing while installing vista ultimate.

drive and put the ultimate disk into the dvd burner lower drive and it worked fine. so my top dvd was makeing the A required CD/DVD drive device is missing error.
so either unplug the power to your cd or dvd drive and put a "temp" cd or dvd drive in from an old pc
or buy a diffrrent dvd or cd drive from the store.

I had exactly the same problem during a major upgrade for a client. (New Mobo, CPU, memory and hard disk. )
A typical Microsoft featurette here: ("I can't recognise the drive I am reading this message from. I know exaclty what the problem is but I'm not telling you. Please fix it")
Of course with most motherboards, you geat a nice easy installtaion CD, full of .exe files that the Vista install doesn't recognise.
So you can't install Visa till you've installed the mobo software, which you can't install till you've installed Vista:
Brilliant. MS does it again.
Search the net: Nothing really helpful at all.
Solution:
Borrow a copy of XP together with the product key.
Install XP. (It's OK, you're not going to activate it or use it.)
Run the start up adventure course, cancelling as soon as you can
Run the mobo installation program
Get a clean boot.
Run the vista installation, taking the option to do a clean install. - Which with only XP drivers somewhere on your freshly formatted disk, seems to run just fine.
Hey presto!
Yes quite a few hours wasted because MS's idea of making life easy is to remove some of the best features of the previous version, but ulitmately, a realitvely easy solution.
All you need to do now is set it up the way you want. - Should be done in a couple of days.
I wonder what the legal eagles will make of this solution?

I tried everything mentioned in this thread and discovered that the solution that worked for me was to gather all relevant drivers for my motherboard and use vLite to create a streamline iso of vista ultimate. Just intergrate all the drivers you for your MB and create an iso then burn it at x2 using the intergrated software in vLite.
Hope it helps. Worked for me after 3 days of banging my head against the wall trying to figure out what to do.

Ok...after endless searching on the net I really need some help.
I've got a 2 1/2 year old LG S1 express laptop which was running windows vista quite happily till a week or so ago. It had to go in for repairs as its HDD got disconnected and stopped showing up.
Now I can't install Vista without encountering this "Required CD/DVD device driver is missing...blah blah blah.." message. Have looked for solutions everywhere. Took my L/T back to the repair shop and tried what they recommended ( enabling ACPI SATA controllers) but to no avail. still get that same message...
EXCEPT .....when I upgrade to vista from a clean installed winxp!! then it installs just fine.
My question is...what can I do to make this happen on a clean install?? I'm a bit of neat freak that way and I'd much prefer a clean installed Vista to an upgraded one with pieces of XP hanging on. Anyhow Vista is such a space hog. It's not just a matter of space. I also want to know WHY this has happened escpecially since it never happened even once in all the umpteen times i've installed Vista before on the same darn machine using the same darn dvd!!
please satisfy my curiousity!

In the end, I simply turn off IDE emulation for SATA drives on my motherboard and the problem was solved.
I guess it depends on each manufacturer and BIOS, but I guess this can be the problem for some people.
In my Nvidia730i based Gigabyte GA-E7-AUM DS2H I can choose to use Nvidia's SATA chip in IDE, RAID, or AHCI.
I was getting the "driver problem" when using "IDE" mode, but it disapeared when I put it back in AHCI.
I guess that using the SATA chipset on IDE was interferring with the IDE channel for the DVD drive (my unit is IDE and rather old).
Hope this could help some of you.

Reply:
1.Copy the SATA folder from the driver CD to a thumbstick
2. Start your computer from the Vista CD
3. When you get the error message close this form
4. On the underlying form click the browse button and select the thumbdrive
5. In the SATA folder select the ATA driver and install
Work done and you can continue to install

The solution?
Set your optical DVD drives' jumper to the "Slave" setting. Make sure this optical drive is connected to the master connector of your IDE cable. This connector is located at the very end of the IDE cable.
The link below is a perfect example for an IDE optical drive setup:
http://www.kids-online.net/learn/click/details/idecable.html
Look at the IDE cable and note that the connector at the very top is "Master"
The connector just below that is "Slave" and the connector at the very bottom is plugged to your motherboard.
So the solution here is to do what we're not supposed to do. Take your IDE cables master connector and plug it into your "Slave" optical drive.. If you have a second IDE optical drive connected to the same IDE cable on the "Slave connector, unplug the power to it only. There's no need to unplug the "Slave" IDE connector. Now you should be able to install Vista with no problems whatsoever.
After your installation of Vista is complete, remember to put your optical drives jumper back to "Master" setting so that your Master optical drive is connnected to your Master IDE connector. Also, plug back the power to your second optical drive, if you have one.
All done...
Good luck. This method worked perfectly for me.

You just bloody loaded the Windows installer from it so why can't you see it now!!!!!!!! More importantly why doesn't the message tell you what device it can't find the driver for or at least say
That driver has installed successfully click next to continue scanning for other devices requiring third party drivers
It is pants they haven't sorted this but hopefully some others will be able read this post and know they arent going insane!!!!

New HP 8540w i7 / SSD / 8G... sad not to be able to install an OS on it...
Tried lot of things since today on this:
redownloaded the DVD in 32 bits and 64 bits several times from Technet
burned them on DVD+R and DVD-R
Installing from USB DVD (have got 3 different models that I tried, no luck)
I tried in Bios to use SATA mode set to IDE.
still getting "a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing"
Put the Intel Matrix drivers from the HP site on a USB key and loaded them, get a "no new devices could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct"
Then tried other OS:
Trying XP 32 bits, I get a blue screen: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
Knoppix give me a "filesystem not found"
Any idea?
Olivier (HP Partner, Microsoft Partner, that's sad too...)

I have the same issue, the error message appears also when I booted up from a usb flash :(...
Does anybody have an idea?

The only reason that message appears is because you have a RAID or DISK controller that the setup doesn't recognise. Most IDE Controllers are fine it's those with SAS and SATA disks and those with enterprise in mind HBA's! It just requires you to install a driver for those controllers. I know some have said they tried every driver but it will repeat the message for EACH controller it requires drivers for.
Someone suggested unplugging unecessary devices - definitely a good idea - have just your CD/DVD drive you are booting from and your disk you wish to install to.
Hope that helps someone...

This has been my welcome to Technet. Fighting this for two days.
Unlike the post before mine my challenge was just the opposite -I had SATA hard disk and IDE DVD drive - I had to replace the IDE DVD drive with a SATA drive and now it's loading finally

Hello everyone,
I dealt with this issue for Windows 7 64bit professional ("No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers") I saw that every time I tried putting windows on my PC. After going through looking for rom drivers on the internet, updating my bios, considering my hard drive was bad, considering my rom drive was bad. I finally solved the issue and my solution MAY apply to some of you out there having the same problem. I switched my power supply from 230v to 115v once I did this windows loaded right up with no errors. So Ihope this helps, it is very important to check all hardware settings and ensure everything is properly hooked up before attempting to boot windows. As I learned something i was convinced was a software issue ended up being a hardware issue.
My system:
Asus m4a88t-m
AMD 955 x4 black edition
8gb pc-1333 g skill ram
500gb WD green hd
1gddr5 128 bit sapphire graphics card
Good luck,
Anthony

The driver missing is for the NEC USB 3.0 driver. If you have the HP Driver Disk, just navigate to the x64 or x86 forlder under NEC3USB (or a similiarly named folder) and you shoudl be good to go.

First things to check
1 Sata cable plugged into first sata Port on mother board usually top left in a group of four.
2 If your CD drive is IDE CHECK THE JUMPER IT SHOULD BE ON CABLE SELECT.
hope this helps (mine was on the slave set and the HDD SATA cable was plugged into the Left Bottom port and i fought this error for 3-4 months searching and trying different things, then it just hit me to check theses two things and bamm it worked.

After spending several days on this issue, I installed XP first, and used the same Win7 setup to upgrade from XP. It did not ask or gave me this error ("No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers")
I also used a partition where I unzipped Win 7 setup files, it worked much faster.
Obviously the issue was the CD/DVD driver failed to co-exists with SATA hard drive.

Really Weird!!! I am setting up a test box to do Window 7 QA on some home grown software so I tried installing one of our MSDN Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit DVDs on a Dell Dimension 4700 and got this same error. I tried BIOS settings, switching to a newer DVD ROM, switched from a SATA to an IDE DVD ROM, Tried all of the combinations of jumper settings and Cable positions for the IDE (the SATA had no jumpers). I even re-downloaded and re-burned the image. In a last ditch effort I downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit from our TechNet subscription and burned to the exact same DVD-R brand I was using for the MSDN version and the darn thing WORKS, no problems! That is messed up MS.
Good Luck All,
Shane

I had the same problem installing Windows 7 64 with a Dell portable. Tried everything from DVD. USB image, hardware drivers, etc.. I finnaly did a instalation image on a disk connected it thru eSATA and managed to install Windows 7 on the computer. It was the same setup I tried before trhu USB or DVD, so it's kinda starnge.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
I've been stuck on this problem for hours and Devon's post is the first I found anywhere that got me out of the DVD Driver rut and on the road to a solution. I had the same required cd/dvd drive device driver error.
1. I tried to install from the supplied mobo drivers disk, but the Windows installer wouldn't recognize the disk.
2. I tried to copy the driver from the mobo disk to a thumb drive. Again, Windows installer didn't recognize the thumb drive.
3. I went to the mobo OEM and downloaded the lastest drivers SATA/RAID drivers and put them on the thumb drive. Still, Windows doesn't recognize the thumb drive is present.
4. On a whim, with thumb drive still installed, I exited out of the installer and rebooted. Entered the installation all over again, never removing the thumb drive, was once again prompted to install the cd/dvd drivers. Now when I select Browse, the thumb drive shows up and once pointed to the SATA/RAID drivers folder, the Win7 installer is happy. From there, i was able to seamlessly install Win7 64bit.
Hope this helps.
Chris

For me, the solution to the problem turned out to be that I had a corrupt iso.
I re-downloaded the windows 7 iso, and this file was much bigger.
Now it does install properly.

I was using Windows 7 64 bit and had the same problem with a SandyBridge motherboard. I have 2 SATA hard drives and 1 SATA DVD drive. I searched the Internet for the solution and tried almost everything - AHCI/non-AHCI mode, native SATA, Legacy SATA, swithcing SATA cables, trying to use drivers from the motherboard CD. Nothing helped. So I was preparing myself to use USB flash as an installation method. But before I did that, I tried one more thing and it worked!
At the moment when the message appeared, I just ejected the installation DVD and pushed it right back again. And clikced OK. And surprise! installation went fine and completed and now I am using my new system for 2 days without any issues, and installed Service Pack 1.
To be sure that the fault is not the DVD media, I repeated the test multiple times and always I got the same behaviour - the system installs fine if I eject/insert DVD back.
Anyway, I am curious, what is happening behind the scene, why Windows installation suddenly loses the DVD it booted from and sees it again after reinserting the disk.

OK now is the truth. This is the solution. I assume all of you is using USB drive to install. When Windows is asking for driver, just click Cancel. You will be brought back to the welcome screen. At the welcome screen, remove your USB drive, insert it back to DIFFERENT USB PORT. Click Install Now again. The installation process will be like usual. This problem happened to all new version of updated Windows 7 installer. I think, it is due to failure of Windows installer to remain its detection to the USB drive. It lost the connection, and became confused, don't know where to find the USB drive it used to read before. When we re-insert the USB drive, Windows installer will detect the USB drive back, and continue like usual. Good luck and cheers! TQ.
FINALLY solved it after 5 long hours! Thanks to BLAMBLAM23!
Only had 1 SATA HDD and installed Windows 7 64bit through USB drive, still got the message about DVD/CD driver missing.
At the "Install Now"-screen, simply unplug the USB stick and insert it into a different USB port. Click "Install Now" and voila!
I can finally go to sleep!
Hope this helps!

Hundreds of people are going to search Google looking for a solution to this very annoying and easy to fix problem. I cannot believe that Microsoft passed this setup portion through their beta testing and didnt come across it. Thanks mate, you've saved me A LOT of headaches.

I had this exact same problem, I tried different media, didn't have a different drive (laptop), the fourth time I booted and it got right past the problem. Bad DVD drive. I need to try USB install, but don't have a memory stick on me that's big enough.
I'm guessing there's more than one problem here...

This appeared to have worked for a lot of people, but not for me. I wasn't using a USB drive, but rather the regular internal drive ["HP multibay"] in the laptop. No matter what I do I get this message. I then tried from a usb drive, and tried what you suggested same thing. I'm guessing if I burn an iso with an earlier installer of w7 x64 this will work? I suppose I will try that now.
Edit/update: Yep, just tried an earlier iso of w7 x64 I had downloaded last year from technet and it works. The problem is only present when using the current installer.

What I ended up doing that worked:
Created a bootable disc and placed in external dvd drive. This is what initially led to the driver error. I tried many of the solutions in this forum and none of them worked. Several hours later I tried to make a bootable USB - didn't work but did burn the image to the USB. When the error came up on the next boot, I placed the USB in and it immediately bypassed the problem. Problem solved!

FANTASTIC! This also worked with WHS 2011 on a HP Microserver. Instead of the Welcome Screen, you need to move the USB stick at the very first screen where you have to select either a new installation or repair.
Thank you!

there are some reports available OOB for FIM 2010 R2 RC which is available on Connect.
there's also a reporting extensibility guide that explains how to create custom bindings and reports.
so, going back to your original question: do you want to see the look of OOB reports or what?

Thanks Sami I already have that presentation which have two screenshots of the reports.
Eugene, I just wanted to send some sample generated reports to a client, unfortunately the current screenshots is not enough.
is there any full (Excel or PDF) samples on the connect site ?

I don't think there are some samples on the connect site.
think of FIM R2 reports as an exported FIM portal request log with an ability to build your own reports with SSRS.

Data Recovery
Hi,
I realize that this isn't necessarily a software question - but I didn't know where else to go.
Our main RAID Unit went down (OWC Mercury Pro Qx2 4-Bay RAID) and all 4 hard drives were physically damaged and not spinning.
I got a data recovery service to restore (www.datarecoverytorontolab.ca), however one of the Hard Drives was damaged permanently. So I ended up with 75% of unsuable data.. as our RAID setup was for performance not safety. Does anyone know a way to stich it together and salvage what ever is left?

From the post, it doesn't seem to be a SBS specific issue and data recovery may be beyond what we can do in the forum.
For any other storage related issue, you can post to the following forum:
