Change the way StartMenu indexes applications. This has bothered me since Win95...

Change the way StartMenu indexes applications. This has bothered me since Win95...

A concept I've noticed that all novice users struggles to understand in Windows is that the StartMenu contains shortcuts and that it is not a reflection of what's in reality installed on the machine.

Change the Installer criteria for developers so they must mark the launcher(s) for a given program with an attribute that makes StartMenu able to detect what to display/not display? This way StartMenu dynamically changes as applications are installed/uninstalled and you don't get obsolete or missing shortcuts all over the place.

In effect StartMenu is then no longer a bunch of messy shortcuts but instead a partial mirror replica of the 'Program Files'-folder (or whatever folder the user installs to)

For programs made prior to a given change like the one suggested above, just let them install the old fashioned way. For programs that are standalone without having to be installed: make StartMenu scan and display the .exe files found in the directories. StartMenu then contains all installed programs at any given time.

MS Money 97

(Yes really!)

No problems so far. Setup created an invalid shortcut ( D:\MSMoney.exe) in the Start Menu  which I had to manually correct.

As another poster said, MS have abandoned UK users of MSMoney, so until I can find a decent alternative I'm stuck with 97, which does all I want it to.

Not knowing if Money 97 would work on Vista was a significant factor in my sticking with WinXP.

Reply:

How did you get Money to work? Does money 97 use IE like money 98? Any replacement that simply allows you to enter checks and reconcile your account?

I can not get my copy of money 98 to install. It just comes back with an error about not being able to install IE with a newer version installed then errors out with IE components are needed.

Any help

Please revert the change of Enter key behavior

Hi,

since a few days hitting Enter produces an empty line before the next text is shown.

This behavior is irritating and counterproductive (even if one could use Shift+Enter) and looks not nice for the several cases, in which a line break is wanted and a new visual paragraph is given.

Instead a possibility to quote parts of text is still missing (or I didn't find it - i.e. using [quote] tag), the code block format is not usefull for batch or script, "My threads view" updates very late from time to time.

So why not fix the issues, which hurt, instead of destroying the functionality nobody complained about?

Best greetings from Germany
Olaf

Reply:
Enter key behavior will be switched back. This should go live next week with a few other minor fixes.

Quoting, a pretty major revamp of the web tier is in the works, could you describe how you would like/expect a quote feature to work.

TIA

Hi Rob,

thanks for the answer.

In relation to quota I would like to see one or more of the following functionality:

  • within or before a quota block, allow to add a non quota block (its currently difficult or impossible - or I did not figure out how, to quote the entire posting and add the greeting on top or if you deleted one line too much at the end to write "unquoted" text)
  • support for syntax like [quota] quoted text here [/quota]
  • ability to paste a segment of text from another posting and mark it directly as quoted (or mark the text, in another posting, while the edit field is already open, click Quote and only the marked text should be inserted as quote at the end of the Edit window (or on the last position of the Edit cursor)

First, the original enter key behavior has been restored.

Second, thanks for the feedback.

In the current system, you can switch to html edit mode to work around/through issues with editing/deleting. You'd just have  to get a little dirty with the html syntax.

We'll take the other suggestions in to consideration. For the third option you outline, would opening a new "window" where you select the portion of text you want to quote and then after "ok" close the window and paste the selected text in a quote block work?

Hi Rob,
thanks for the revert :-)
(Btw. seems not to be changed back for "New" messages.)

A "new window" should not be necessary, since we see the former postings while editing (although I could imagine the sense for multi page threads sometimes).
Each message has already this little Quote icon in the upper right corner.
In http://forum.home-server-blog.de/index.php the Quote icon changes its behavior. If text in another posting is marked, while the Edit window is open, only the marked selection will be quoted like this: [quote="OlafE"]Ein Workaround mit XP-Treibern kann, muss aber nicht funktionieren.[/quote]
This also keeps the last cursor position for inserting the quote, even if this was not in the end of the written text in the Edit window.
This comfort level I would like to experience here as well.
Best greetings from Germany

Cmedia engineers are working on new driver for W7.

I guess we'll just have to wait until they have their driver or use... /shivers... onboard sound.

AVG Internet Security 8 uninstall and the blue screen crash

It was as if there was a fault on AVG, had the Blue Screen twice, then suddenly after downloading the installation software & running it, the software, itself, deleted the old AVG [ Anti-Virus ]  . This was on Thursday morning - Wednesday was a wasted evening, trying to reinstall, the reason for trying to re-install was a message on screen, "There is a fault with AVG, do you wish to report it".

Had me tearing what little hair I have left out.

Thursday morning, AVG reinstalled effortlessly.

Audio Jack Retasking

Some newer motherboards (from the last few years) support audio port retasking; basically, this allows the motherboard to re-configure its audio jacks to support different types of surround sound systems, multiple microphones/line-ins, etc. to support whatever the user needs. However, there's no way to do this (in XP/Vista/7) without installing extra software from the motherboard manufacturer (e.g. Intel), which is usually garbage and not needed for any other reason.

Since most/all new motherboards with onboard sound support this now (I think), what about adding this to the sound control panel applet in Windows 7? I assume there would be some way to detect if the motherboard supported it or not, and show/hide the 'Retasking' tab if it isn't.

Confirmed installation on VirtualBox 2.1 - Ubuntu 8.10 host

Win 7 works perfectly as a guest OS on VirtualBox 2.1 (Ubuntu 8.10 Host). Tested both with 512Mb and 1Gb memory allocated. When you install Guest Additions you must set compatibility to "Windows Vista" and run Guest Additions as Administrator (both done through right-clicking on the apropriate GuestAdditions exe file.)

Networking, automatic resolution switching (full screen to windowed) and "free" mouse movemnt workes as intended.

Reply:
I second the above: everything is working well in VirtualBox 2.1.2 on Xubuntu 8.10.  Installation went smoothly.

Reply:
Yup, same here except on a Debian Sidux (Sid) host with VBox 2.1.0.

Had trouble trying to install the Guest Additions until I read this post suggesting running in compatibility mode.  I chose to run in XP mode rather than Vista.  No particular reason for the choice other than the Guest Additions installed fine on my XP guest.  Wasn't sure if the install would work for Vista compatibility.

I do not have full video support so I do not get all the "eye candy" and trying to run any of the installed games is painfully slow.  But that is expected with a virtual guest.

Networking with a bridged adapter works just fine, my Win7 guest is a valid member of my local network.

Hard crashes (mouse & keyboard are non-responsive)
1. Windows hard crash everytime I run the Performance index assessment tool, mainly when it's assessing windows media decoding performance
2. Windows hard crash everytime I try playing a video with Windows Media Player. Playing the same videos with VLC is fine
3. Windows hard crash while PC is idle, yet there's heavy disk activity without a sign of ever stopping.

These are all sure signs that you are running out of resources. If you are not able to use the feedback tools to report the problem, you will probably have to wait for the next build to see improvment.

Can this system run Windows Vista Home Premium that has the Media Center without experiencing these same issues?  If not then Windows 7 will not be able to as well.  At this point in time the system requirements are about the same for Windows Vista and Windows 7 till the official requirements are released.

If the machine you are testing this on isnt able to run Media Center in Home Premium then it most likely wont be able to do it with Windows 7 Ultimate Beta.  As Mark said.  You will have to wait for a newer build to maybe see some kind of improvement.

The original OS on the system was XP Media Center, and it was fine. Running out of resource shouldn't hard crash the OS just like that without warnings, right? I have a feeling this is driver issue, either the video or audio.

Speaking of Media center, I ran the Media Center app in Windows  beta, it loaded just fine in windowed mode. When I turn it to full screen, the screen went blanks except for the mouse cursor. If I invoked the start menu during the blank full-screen mode, everything is displayed fine. If I click back on the Media center, screen went blank again.

I have submitted all of the above using the feedback tool. For now, I've been running a streaming video in Firefox for for hours, and no crash yet.

Also, did you do a clean installation of the OS or an upgrade? If you did an upgrade, I'd suggest attempting a clean installation (just be aware that you'll need an empty partition or drive to attempt this on unless you dont care about your data on your current partition/drive).

------------------------------------
Reply:
It's a clean install. Besides, I don't think you can do an upgrade from XP.

I think the crashes during idle might be related to power management. If I have the system active constantly (eg. by playing a streaming video in firefox), it seems to be stable. I have another hard crash today after leaving the system idle for a while. Of course, this could be related to the BIOS and/or drivers related to the motherboard, display, etc. Who knows.

I still have no clue why it crashed during the performance index assessment.

Extend our Windows 7 beta...forever?

Okay I admit it - I fricken love Windows 7. I've become so used to it now that going back to XP is simply not enjoyable any more.

So I wonder if there's any way at all that Microsoft lets us purchase or otherwise extend the current beta install we have.

I just don't want it to expire in August. Getting too involved now and actually been using it as my main OS more and more so giving that up come August would really suck.

Microsoft peeps...any chance this can be done?

Could be that Windows is asking for permission to allow a component of CoD4 to access the internet.  The pop up window may be hidden behind the game, but won't allow it to continue.  One thing you can try is to temporarily turn off the UAC.

Certain buttons should be able to take on the theme's color

Since I always tend to keep my interface blue or default, I haven't really noticed that some windows applications dont really tie in quite well to whatever theme the user has selected.  This picture really showed me the problem.

For example:

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/01/Win7ssteve.jpg

Note the green theme, but the blue buttons in WMP12. Wouldn't it be great if microsoft's applications were coded (and if windows made this tech available to third parties) to take on whatever color the user has as their theme (of course with an option to disable this feature). Of course not all colors would work well in all circumstances, but if the API could have the option of picking an alternate, but thematically similar color in the event of a conflict with the background (ie: in the event of black on black, using a neutral white) everything would work fine.

Windows could provide an area where users could select whether to entirely disable this feature, or to disable it for individual programs (so that every program that decided to support this feature, which would hopefully be many, wouldn't have to include it themselves). Maybe, if this proves to be something lots of people don't like, it could be an install option rather than a default setting.

Load bios defaults before to run windows 7 setup, to restore defaults clocks and try again

W7 restore does not work?

Tried several times to restore back after crash.  No joy.  Always have had to reload from scratch.

Tried both to restore to restore point manually created, or auto created.

Tried to restore a system image.  No joy either.

The forums are painful on a dial up modem. answer not required

Been having DSL issues for two days so had to revert to dial up untill it is repaired.

Painfully slow.

Give me back my line breaks!

With all that is wrong with these bloody forums, the pisspoor performance, the broken Telerik editor in Firefox that doesn't let you use the toolbar dropdowns, etc. why in the hell did you "fix" something that was not fewking broken?!

I am a touch typist, and I'm accustomed to hitting Enter twice to get paragraph spacing. Now when I hit Enter it not only wraps the preceding text in a paragraph tag, it creates a new paragraph with a bloody non-breaking space in it. What the hell were you thinking? I don't want to have to stop and remember to hit Shift-Enter to get a line break. I want the behavior that I am accustomed to, and which works the same way on EVERY other forum I frequent, or have ever frequented.

Have you tried to enter any sample markup to help a user out? Good luck. Every line you enter gets its own damned paragraph. Last night I entered some javascript scripting to try to help out a user. By the time I got the thing finished I was so frustrated I wanted to hit someone.

Just in case no one else has clued you in, this is a BAD IDEA! It makes editing in this forum different from any other forum with which I am acquainted, and no one should be expected to have to make a conscious mental shift just to use the editor here. Whatever your reasons for making this change, they are not sufficient. Kindly return the editor behavior to the status quo ante. Thank you.

cheers,
scott
