Fuzzy text in applications

Fuzzy text in applications

The text in some applications is fuzzy, although the titlebar text is fine.  Here is a link to an example, with Avast AV: http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn313/cij8oya02/fuzzy_text.png

My system Info:

HP-Pavilion KJ302AA-ABA a6432f

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+

3.00 GB RAM

Display adapter type  NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (Prerelease - WDDM 1.0)

Display adapter driver version 7.15.11.7923

Monitor resolution 1680x1050(native)

Windows 7 Ultimate beta 64bit build 7000

Reply:
Have you tried the latest NVIDIA WHQL drivers for Vista yet? The WDDM 1.0/1.1 drivers are known to cause a number of issues.

Reply:
I downloaded and ran 181.22_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql.exe, which installed display adapter driver version 7.15.11.8122.  This increased my Windows Aero Index by .1, but made no other difference.

I've installed Forte Agent newsreader, and it has the same fuzzy text.  The only program I've installed so far that doesn't have the fuzzy text is Firefox 3.0.5.

I'm going out on a limb here, but have you tried the ClearType Text Tuner in the Control Panel?

------------------------------------
Reply:
Yes, but that's not the trouble.  I have text size (DPI) set to 150%.  I just found that if I check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" box in the "Compatibility" tab of the application's "Properties" page, it solves the problem.

I have my DPI set high on my Vista install, as well, and didn't have to check anything to get my applications to work properly there.

Thanks for responding and trying to help.

install stops at 22%

While installing the beta the install stops at 22%,  when I try to reboot the  PC I get a message saying the system32\hall.dll is missing.  Has anyone experienced this and if so how did you get past it?

Resume from sleep cripples the system

Yep. System goes to sleep nicely but resuming leads to problems:

- My computer doesn´t show any drives

- Media player hangs

- Whole computer hangs in logging off when trying to restart

-Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 with the newest bios, E6600, HD3650, 4GB´s of Buffalo.

Reply:
I've read a fair number of threads on problems with the sleep mode, but I can't remember if they dealt with your particular problem. This beta build unfortunately still has a number of bugs, but sometimes these kind of problems point to issues with your graphics card driver. Have you tried installing the latest Vista WHQL drivers from ATI?

------------------------------------
Reply:
I had Vista before W7 and the problem was almost the same except Vista usually died to bluescreen, W7 does not.

Event log nags about HAL and suggests bios update. Gigabyte made a S3 resume fix to F9 bios but i suspect that the problem was not dealt thoroughly. Hope they read these forums too...

Latest ATI W7 beta drivers in use.

Other than resuming the system works almost perfectly.

Edit: Oh, i once had Vista and XP in dualboot and sleep (cant remember if it was called that in XP) worked flawlessly in XP side.

Bugginess in the desktop/UI

Greetings, Microsofties. I have a few bugs to report.

* Win 7 beta has an annoying tendency to switch screen resolutions to 1024x768 during installs. I installed some .NET libraries as well as an app that uses it, and when the security box came up, asking if I wanted to run the installer, it switched the whole desktop to 1024x768 and would not restore it. I had to manually reset it to its natural resolution, 1680x1050.

* Also during app installs, my background image would get blown off and the background set to black. When I brought up Customization, the old desktop image was still there but I had to select it again, and it would reappear. This happened with older apps, ranging from the Freelancer game to Shell Uploader, a .NET 1.1-based applet that lets you right click and upload images to ImageShack and other hosting sites.

Running a home built FrankenPC with:

* Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard

* Intel Q6600 processor

* 4GB RAM

* nVidia 8800GT, 512MB RAM, latest drivers

* Viewsonic VX2235 22" monitor, latest Viewsonic drivers

Can provide any more details as needed.

Need help with strange log in issue.

Some background. I did a clean install of Windows 7 x64 and subsequently ran the "Windows Easy Transfer" application to transfer data from a 32 bit version of Vista Business.

Every time I log in to Windows 7, regardless of which account or if it is a new account, the "System Properties" window pops up and is on the "Computer Name" tab. Every single time I log in.

I've used the Sysinternals autorun tool to see if I could spot anything that might cause it but nothing caught my attention. This even happens when I boot into safe mode.

I don't exactly recall if this problem started before or after I ran the "Windows Easy Transfer" but I'm willing to bet that the problem started after I ran that tool.

On my main machine I upgraded to Windows 7 x64 from Vista Ultimate x64 and haven't ran into this problem.

It isn't a dire problem but quite annoying.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried to repair it?

Does  ProcMon  still work on  W7?   If so try its boot logging option.

I've never been a fan of Easy Transfer.  I always wonder if it's going to transfer a glitch from my old system to my new system.

That having been said, it's going to take a lot of troubleshooting to find what's causing this.  I'd suspect a corruption in the startup entry for the control panel (can't recall where that is right now).

Oops, Carbonite Service (AVG) slowing down HDD performance in W7...

Hi,

I noticed that every time I tried to open a folder in Windows Explorer, it took as many as 5 or 10 seconds to open (quite annoying).  I tried turning off various services and after trial and error, found that it was my Carbonite (AVG) automatic backup causing the problem.  So, I turned it off using MSCONFIG and now no problems.

I will just do a manual Carbonite Backup once a day and leave the service off otherwise.  There was no problem with this under Vista so I can only assume that Carbonite needs some work to function properly with W7.

I had wondered why my Gadgets where not working. The never did for me tho. I install AVG first on a fresh install tho (call it a habit) so this is probably the cause.

Thanks mate, i'll uninstall it and go back to NOD32 for now.

Well AVG works fine for me .... and Yes I have a currency gadget (living in Germany and watching the English pound I need it!)

Seriously, it's more likely Windows 7, because everyday I have to fix problems for a system that was working 24 hours before ... today Outlook freezes, yesterday it was IE8 using the wrong time frame, the day before the network printers stopped working.

Do not always blame the application, this operating system is really pre- beta

OpenOffice 3.0 installer keeps crashing.

As the title says.

I ended up having to install it in VMWare and copy over the installed files.

I'm using OpenOffice 3 on Win 7 x64.  I first installed the latest x64 JAVA version from Sun and then started the OO installer. The Installation  went fine and I had no issues so far using the OO suite.

I tried installing this without modifications and it crashed and then rolled back. I then changed the compatibility of the install.exe to Vista, and it installed flawlessly.

Been working fine. So far.

I have almost the same exact problem,  Installing with windows vista64 sp1 on 2 x 320 gig in raid 0 and putting windows 7 on a 320 gig jbod. Raid drivers load fine and windows installs then when it starts for the first time it just stays and completing installation. I left it there for 3 hours and never went any further. I think i will wait for a posted fix for this as i see a few other threads about it with no fix as of yet.

Beta tested xp and vista and am used to problems but that usually only happened after install.

Hey,

Have you tried burnign at a slower speed?

0xc0000098 most likely will show you the following error:

Info :Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt.

Which could mean a bad burn.

Or is it possible to try using another burner?

Performance Information and Tools - Windows Experience Index shows: Primary Hard Disk: Disk data transfer rate: 2.0. / on Vista shows 4.9 or higher/ used is latest combatible driver: Microsoft-21. 6. 2006-6.1.7000.0-Microsoft Windows

I tryed disk defragmentation and Scandisk - no change.

Its here any possible way to improve HDD performance ?

waiting for advice.

Theres a lot of threads on this , Its partly/mainly due to the way Win 7 runs the WEI differently theres a far higher focus on HardDrive information transfer etc now. plus things have been changed to allow for the new Technologies on the way ie SSD's.

Also certain technologies are apparently capped at certain levels. Thats a 5400rpm SATA drive. I'm Running Win 7 on an 80GB 7200rpm SATA drive and i get a 3.0 I'm not planning on installing it on my main SATA II drive, as when the Beta Ends, if need be i can just remove the 80GB drive and thats me back to XP as it was before i started testing Win7.

Apparently Disabling the write cache can make a difference in terms of performance, but tbh i never had Vista installed, and im quite happy with how my hardware runs, whatever its reported as.

Have a read through of this thread here its discussed in quite a bit of detail.

------------------------------------
Reply:
may it be caused because one physical harddisk is divided to 2 partition ?

------------------------------------
Reply:
i'm not sure on that, I have Win 7 on an entirely separate HDD of 80GB as opposed to my normal 500GB SATAII which is divided into 3 partions.

Reply:
ok now disabled caching - from 2.0 to 4.6 WEI, now im quite satisfied, thx for advice.

Desired Features In Windows 7.0

My current OS (operating system) is Windows Vista Ultimate-64 (Version 6.0, Service Pack 1). I am generally happy with this OS and consider it to be a major upgrade over Windows 2000/XP. I wish to comment on what I would expect from Windows Version 7.0 (as opposed to Windows Version 6.1).

In my opinion, the biggest shortcoming in Windows 6.0 is the difficulty in diagnosing computer performance problems. Computers and their operating systems are now so complex that even Vista support professionals have difficulty determining if a problem, such as slow boot time, sluggish internet performance, or system instability, is due to a hardware, BIOS, operating system, or application problem. In evaluating the performance of the operating system, they have difficulty determining if a problem might relate to invalid registry keys, device drivers, or corrupted system files. This is not intended to imply any criticism of Microsoft support personnel. The ones I have dealt with have been outstanding individuals.

In cases where a Microsoft support person may be unable to positively determine the source of the problem the customer is, in effect, thrown to the wolves. For example, there are numerous software companies selling registry cleaning and repair software, but it is questionable whether their claims are valid or if they are selling snake oil. There are a few companies that sell very expensive "low-level" diagnostic software to test hardware but, apart from advertising, there is little information available to help someone determine the actual capabilities and limitations of these products.

I would like to see more powerful and useful diagnostic utilities built into Windows 7.0. It seems to me that a computer's operating system is the logical place to contain all of the diagnostic tools required to determine if a computer performance problem is hardware or software related and to determine the origin and nature of any problem. A customer should not have to purchase expensive software having questionable or unknown value to troubleshoot elusive computer problems.  By the way, the msinfo.exe utility in System Information needs to be fixed. Every file I attempted to send to a support professional was "corrupted".

Most people are doing relatively simple things with their computers, such as surfing the Internet, sending email, maintaining personal records, storing photos, and doing homework. A basic functioning computer is more important to them than a plethora of glizy features. Most people cannot afford to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to have someone troubleshoot a computer problem that probably has a simple but elusive, cause. They should also not have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars purchasing software from unknown companies that may not be helpful or that may create even worse problems.

Secondly, I would prefer that Microsoft did not advertise and include other utilities with Windows that are not very useful. For example the defrag utility that shipped with Vista did not provide any Windows based user control or any graphical progess display. The DVD Maker utility does not permit you to copy .iso and some other file types. And the Restore Point Utility that shipped with Vista only allows you to image your entire system, as opposed to your boot drive. Some of these utilities may have been upgraded since I last used them, but the point is I would prefer that Microsoft either included utilities comparable in functionality to third party utilities or simply stated that "we provide hooks for certain types of utilities but you should purchase them from a third party".

I was advised by a Microsoft employee to post these types of remarks on one of these forums. My remarks are primarily intended for the Microsft Windows policy makers and developers, however.

Sincerely,

pmw

Shipping a 'new, fresh and easy-to-use' OS in 2009/2010 without instant network functionality is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Admittedly, the stakes are very high as this time around everything has to work right out of the box. It also seems like a logical explanation as to why the beta is already this damn good.

WxToImg Problem

The only program that I have problems with is WxToImg it has just about worked with some of the early Beta's but now I have a genuine activated version of 7000 32bit it fails 95% of the time.

The problem is trying to use stored audio files at first I could get it to work by putting them on the desktop instead of their correct place but now that works no longer.

I have the latest software version 2.9.0 to no avail

Games and drivers

Any one know how to install the original Real Flight and the G2 upgrade to work on Windows 7?  I have a patch for XP and it works great on that.  Great Planes doesn't support the old version any more.  I am also using an older AGP video card.  It is an Nvidia Gforce MX200/400.  The XP drivers won't load, and there is no Windows 7 drivers that work.  Can't seem to find any Vista drivers either, thought maybe those would work.  Return to Castle Wolfenstein  will not work on Windows 7.  Will install but will not run.

Reply:
Have you tried to install them with compatibility mode for XP enabled, as well as the Run as Administrator option?  Right click the setup file > properties > Compatibility tab > choose to run in compatibility mode for XP > check the 'Run as Administrator' box at the bottom > click ok > run the file.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Just installed Return to Castle Wolfenstein on Win 7 64Bit, had to install it in XP compatibility mode, but after that it ran and played fine, very smooth and fast, however it doesnt support my monitors native resolution (1680x1050) so looks a little odd lol.As for all the others, try installing in XP compatibility mode.

right click on the installer and select Properties, Compatibility Tab Windows XP service pack 2

then at the bottom put a tick in Run as Administrator Apply/OK

then try installing. Another reason that RTCW might not run on your version of windows 7 is due to  the video card drivers. There was never a Vista version released for that card as far as i am aware, so it falls into the XDDM driver problem, as far as i am aware.
