A bug in SBS?

I just installed SBS 2011 Essentials as a virtual machin in Hyper-V and I've run into some serious problems. Among several issues the most alerting thing is that the server wont connect to Windows Update.

I've found the following article, which describes (and hopefully) solves my problem...

http://msmvps.com/blogs/thenakedmvp/archive/2009/11/08/windows-update-error-80072ee2-hyper-v-guest-issues.aspx

The main question is if its safe to follow those instructions?

Another question is why this issue still exist (it's an old post and lots of people has acknowledged the solution)?

hi,

this will definately solve your problem, see also my blog post: http://blog.ronnypot.nl/?p=310

is it safe certainly when you run the best practice analyzer it advices to turn these settings of. why it is not changed probably because it is a driver setting and in other situations it is good to turn the settings on.

Given the fact that it's a driver in the HyperV parent, I see this is as
more of an issue (still of an issue) with RSS/TOE and core Windows, not
per se with SBS.

Microsoft swears that offloading works at provides a great deal of
wonderousness for enterprises.

I still as a rule shut it off as I still find cases of problems.  It's
not as widespread as it once was, but still I don't trust offloading.

------------------------------------
Reply:

So, what does exactly this offloading do?

Conserning ronnypots link... Should this setting be disabled on the physical NIC as well?

After following the instructions in the link from my previous post, Windows Update now seems to work fine. Next problem though is that when running the initial configuration tasks I get stuck on configuring my router (DLink DIR-657). The device is setup for UPnP but SBS don't seem to be able to communicate with it. Even after setting up forwarding of https manually it fails. Remote Web Access doesn't either seem to want to be configured :(

The router works fine with all other systems. Therefore I believe that there are still some problems with this virtual machine. I just don't know what?!?

Ignore that.  The upnp error is just saying you don't have a upnp router.  Manually set up the router.

What's the RWA error.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Which one should I ignore... the link from ronnypot or the UPnP thing?

As I wrote, it doesn't help to configure the router manually either :(

Concerning the RWA error, I'll have to get back here (I'm not at the machine right now).

Question - Can the host's firewall (W2K8 R2) interfere with the guests networking somehow?

------------------------------------
Reply:

Ignore the upnp error.

When you set up the hyperV role on the server, it sets up the necessary firewall rules.

How did you set up the hyperV core and did you use that installer dodad thingy that does everything you need to get core right (I'm a gui gal, I stick with gui for hyperV)

------------------------------------
Reply:

My Hyper-V is installed (from wizard) in a grapical W2K8 R2 system. No manual interferance...

What about this offloading thing... Should it be disabled on the physical NICs as well (all of them)? I have only disabled the settings within the VM, so far.

Concerning RWA... The error message says "Remote Web Access to your server is blocked" followed by some text insinuating that the problem has to do with the router. Therefore I assume that if we resolve the first problem we might get rid of the other one as well... Any ideas what to do?

Forward port 443 manually from router to servers internal ip

then from an external client browse https://publicip/remote

Can u please post the screenshot of what page you get when u do that?

Also does https://localhost/remote work from server itself?

Setup only says that it is unable to configure router....if u configure it manually it should work

Now get a trusted cert and bind it to IIS and then use you public domain name to browse RWA.

Also, I want to install MSSE for virus protection, but IE tells me that my security settings won't allow me to download it :(

The party line from Microsoft is that you are supposed to run this from the console on a workstation.

Launch the normal server manager

Disable IE ESC for Administrators

I found the IE setting, thanks "RP"!

What you say about running the setup from the console on a workstation. Does this really make a difference... That's just an RDP session, isn't it (meaning it's still the servers local software that is used)?

Another thing... When I try to access the SBS machine from the console I get this error message:

"This computer can't verify the identity of the RD Gateway "hostname". It's not safe to connect to servers that can't be identified. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

Since I am the nw-admin I'm obviously stuck again :(

No no, I just left out the real hostname...

Concerning the RDP session... Doing this from the console can't make it any more secure then (since it's still the "local" IE that is unsecured), right?

He means as the workaround, if the cert wizard doesn't work.  It wants you to buy a cert from enom or godaddy.

Ok, I just realized that there might be another issue here. Maybe the RDP session needs the certificate after all. What I guess is missing is the Server Dashboard. It is marked to be shown in RWA for the user (admin), but I can't find it there when logging in to the console with that user account.

I believe that it's from this tool all the settings shall be done, not from the RDP session. That would make sence, since it leaves out the need for using the server's web browser etc. The problem is why doesn't the Dashboard link show up in RWA?

Does anyone have an idea why the Server Dashboard isn't available in the RWA console?

Where exactly should the Server Dashboard link be available when logging in to http://hostname/remote?

When you are inside the lan, you should be using the launchpad which has a link straight to the dashboard.

Ahh... So it's neither RDP or RWA that should be used here. All the initial configurations should be done from the Launchpad (and it's there the administrator can find the Server Dashboard link). Is that correct?

Since no one argues here I guess that this is the way it works ;)

Back to the original question... Disabling offloading (on all adapters) makes things work better, but I can still observe disconnections from the RDP sessions when heavy network traffic occurs. Are there any other settings that should be done as well?

------------------------------------

Merged VHD and AVHD gives error: an error occured while attemting to start the selected virtual machine. Cannot find file Ox80017002 - Sol'n

I think that was the right error code.  Similar to Cannot access file due to permissions error

Symptom -- 1)  through Hyper V Manager Delete Snapshot

                    2)  Allow Merge magic to occur -- no errors

                     3)  Try to restart VM -- Error cannot find file.

Solution.  Create another VM use the merged VHD as the HD source.  Magic happens... :-)

Creating the new VM and associating the resulting merged VHD would reset permissions on the merged VHD.

If you had an existing VHD that was pointing to an AVHD and you manually merged the AVHD to its parent VHD the AVHD would be gone and the VM configuration would be broken.

Did you try opening the settings of the VM after you manually merged and select No Disk, then save, then selected the resulting merged disk and save.  And then attempt to boot the VM again?

If it was a permissions problem, this would reset those.

If it was a configuraiton problem, it would also cover that.

Is this the best workflow for deploying software?

Hello all,

We've got SCCM 2007SP2 up and running smoothly, but I'm wondering if we're doing it "the right way"?

Here is how we're deploying software:

  1. Make a package with an install script or batch file or what have you and upload it to the distribution point
  2. Make an Active Directory Security group for either the users or PC's we want to get this software
  3. Make a collection with a WQL query to poll the members of the above group
  4. Make an advertisement deploying software to the members of that collection
  5. Wait until the magic happens and the software gets installed during the next maintenance window

So, this whole process feels a bit cumbersome.  I'm wondering if there is a better--and specifically a faster way-- to deploy software to our users than this.

How do you guys do it?

Reply:

process is same for deploying software to users or computers by creating package, collection(based on AD sec groups),advertisement and then results but i would not deploy software to users there are some technical disadvantages.

When you target users for software deployments you will lose the manageability of your environment there you link the advertisement to the logon of the users onto a computer within the Active Directory domain. Those users can log on/off wherever they want and therefore software gets installed on computers where this software wasn’t supposed to be available. This also makes this software also available for other users who shouldn’t have access to that specific software package.

There's no one-fits-all answer. The process described above might work well for company A, but does not fit for company B (depending on the requirements, size of the environment, service level agreements etc).
One thing I don't recommend: using a batch or script for kicking off the installations. Why not using a single msiexec command line or task sequence when it comes to chaining applications?

Calculating the unique DN value for AD using the declarative rule

Hi,

In the current scenario, I am using the declarative rules for provisioning at AD.

However, I want to ensure that the DN value is unique. DN is CN = <First Name + Last Name> , OU=City,DC= FIM, DC=COM.

In case of duplicacy, i should be adding 1,2,3 etc like CN=<First Name + Last Name +1>.

However, i am not sure if this can be achieved using declarative rules.

Migrating to classic meta-verse rules extension will be difficult as it might break other use-cases like deprovioning (where i just remove the declarative sync rule).

Please suggest any method to check for existing DN value.

Also, is it possible that I continue my provisoning logic using declarative rules, but at the same time, handle the exception "DN already exists" in the 'metaverse rules extension'' provisioning method ?

Thanks

How/Where do you generate the "unique" sAMAccountName?

I would suggest you add to that process to also generate a "unique" CN value that FIM can import and use.

Otherwise you would need a custom WF to do this, if you do not want to build your on, try this one http://www.tools4fim.com/function-evaluator.aspx

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thanks Kent.

I am generating the 'unique' sAccountName while importing the data from HRMS. In my case, the sAMAccount Name has Employee ID in it. Hence it is always unique.

In case of DN, i cant calculate it in HRMS rules extension as there are few attributes decided by FIM portal.

Also. please guide on how Function Evaluator can help in generatiing a unique CN value.

Mayank Vaish

------------------------------------
Reply:

An easy way would then be to incorporate the EmployeeID (or sAMAccountName) in the CN as well ;-).

Your approach will also cause problems for non-employees (people not in HR system) I guess.

Regarding the Tools4FIM FunctionEvaluator. If you download it, i recall it having a nice helpfile with a good example on how to use the Unique Name Generator.

Programatically change document approvers in workflow

Hello all,

I have created an infopath form 2010, in which i have a department dropdownlist having three dept. HR/IT/Operations. If a user select HR department then document approver will be different and if he select IT department then document approver will be different. After this approval i have an ultimate(second) approver which will be same for every department employee. How to achieve this using workflow. Either to use statemachine workflow or sequential workflow. i need a concrete answer Any help will be higly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

As per my understanding, sequential workflow is most appropriate. Reason being, this seems to be different email address based upon the selection of drop down. Other than that, we follow the same course.

You need to get the selected value from the InfoPath form in the workflow and guide your email accordingly.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

No Data on VPN connection

Machine at home = Windows 7 Home Premium
Machine at work = Windows 7 Professional

Set up incoming connection on work machine and VPN connection on home machine.

VPN connects with a usual status of "no internet access."  SOMETIMES, however, the VPN status is "internet access."

In either case I cannot see any of the work machine's files.  I have searched all over the internet and most often the advise is to go into VPN connection properties and drill down into the "networking" tab to TCP/IPv4 and advanced and uncheck "use default gateway on remote network."  This DOES NOT solve the problem.  I do set the IP address to the work machine as well as the DNS server addresses identified.

It there some properties or permissions that I am overlooking in order to map to a drive on the work machine?  I am at a loss as I have tried everything I have read about for the past week and simply can't get past getting connected.

Any help will be appreciated.

How are you attempting to access the files? If u are trying by \\machineName\files try doing it by ip address for ex \\192.168.10.10\files.

After you connect can you ping the machine? can you RDP to the machine? What king of vpn is it PPTP, ipsec,....?

Are both clients connect to same server address for VPN connection ? how did we set address assignment on VPN server ?  are we using RRAS as VPN software on server ?

Can we reach the internal address of VPN address after VPN connection is been created ?

We may compare the “ipconfig /all” and “route print” results from both clients and internal server host when VPN connection is established maybe you can show us the results here.

VPN clients are unable to access resources beyond the VPN server.

You are facing problem when connected to VPN on windows 7. its just due to errors on your VPN Settings. You should re configure network settings while working on windows 7 environment or just try new VPN setup. Setup of VPN in windows 7 it not a difficult task you just go through the following steps.:

Setup on Windows 7 VPN

Step1: Click start button and type “Network and Sharing Center” on the bar to move to the said location

Step2: In the resulting window, you will notice “Change your networking settings” on the top, click “Set up a new connection or network” just below it.

Step3: “Set Up a Connection or Network” wizard will appear as a result. You have to click the third option from top, i.e. “Connect to a workplace” and then click next.

Step4: You will be asked for the mode through you, which you want to connect to VPN from among your internet connection, or directly through a dialer. If you have paid for a VPN plan from a vendor, then select “Use my Internet Connection” else click “Dial Directly”. In most cases, the first option is preferred.

Step5: The next windows would prompt you to mention the requisite credentials regarding your Internet Address and Description name.  In the Internet Address, you will have to provide your VPN server’s domain name or IP address. In the Description name, you have to mention your VPN connection name that could be anything as per your choice. A better option would be to have a descriptive name. check the other options as per your suitability. Finally click Next.

Step6: In the next window, provide the User name, Password, and domain as your VPN account credentials and click Create to establish the connection. If you are in the habit of forgetting passwords, you can check on ‘remember this password’ option. However, it could also pose a threat to your security if someone else is using your computer and he/she logs in with your account.

Step7: Once you are done with all the above mentioned steps, you can test the windows7 VPN client connection you just established. Alternatively, you can also test it later on by click Close button.

Hi,

Have you gone through all steps when installing adapter pack? Have you checked if bindings are registered in machine.config (x86 and x64)? If bindings have failed to register, you need to do it manually. It is described in the installation manual of Adapter Pack (See documentation i.e. installation guide section register bindings).

i checked evrything..when i try to do following..i am struck at finding public key..because i couldnt see my sql adapter in C:\WINDOWS\assembly.

To register the bindings
  1. Navigate to the machine.config file on the computer. For example, on a 32-bit platform, the machine.config is available under <system drive>:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<version>\CONFIG.

    • For Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, <version> is the version v2.0.50727 of the .NET Framework.

    • For Microsoft .NET Framework 4, <version> is the version v4.0.30319 of the .NET Framework.

  2. Open the file using a text editor.

  3. To register the adapter bindings:

    1. Search for the element "system.serviceModel" and add the following under it:

      <client> <endpoint binding="sqlBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" name="mssql" /> </client>
    2. Search for the element "bindingElementExtensions" under system.serviceModel\extensions.

    3. Add the following section under the "bindingElementExtensions" node.

      For the SQL adapter, add:

      <add name="sqlAdapter" type="Microsoft.Adapters.Sql.SqlAdapterBindingElementExtensionElement,Microsoft.Adapters.Sql, Version=<version>, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=<public key>" />
    4. Search for the element "bindingExtensions" under system.serviceModel\extensions.

    5. Add the following section under the "bindingExtensions" node.

      For SQL adapter, add:

      <add name="sqlBinding" type="Microsoft.Adapters.Sql.SqlAdapterBindingCollectionElement,Microsoft.Adapters.Sql, Version=<version>, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=<public key>" /

It sounds like maybe you forgot to install the adapter pack and only installed the WCF LOB SDK. On 64-bit I think you have to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the adapter pack.

The best free book is either Don Jones' original version of TFM or the one over on powershell.com:  http://powershell.com/Mastering-PowerShell.pdf.  Here is an extensive list of other books if you are interested in paying: http://powershellcommunity.org/Resources.aspx. If I were to start over again, I would probably want Don Jones/Jeff Hicks' Windows Powershell TFM v2.0 for the basics and Payette's Powershell In Action for the deep stuff.  The .pdf listed above is good, but, covers a lot of ground quickly.

Please,

What is the OS where you are installing the agent?

Have you tried to install the agent (with the same sources) in another machine.

Can you post what are the information that you type before installing ?

Browse for Databases confirmation box

So, when I connect to a server, I like to set up a default database.  I open the 'Connect to Database Engine' dialog and load the 'Connection Properties' tab. Then I select '<Browse server...>'.

SSMS pops up a 'Browse for Databases' dialog with the prompt 'Browsing the available databases on the server requires connecting to the server. This may take a few moments. Would you like to continue?'

Now, given that I am in the connection dialog, I'm committed to connecting to this server. It's not going to take more time than I have available. I find this dialog especially rich since SSMS will blithely load every SQL Server it can find on the network if I ask it to, and spend six hours doing it. There's no confirmation dialog there.

I connect to enough instances that this dialog has started to bug me enough that I posted this. Can we drop it for Denali?

Lync 2010 phone numbers normalization: Strange differences between on session to another, GAL, extension numbers in Lync client 2010

Hi, We are experiencing strange issues with phone number nomalization even when the updating GAL on Lync 2010 clients.

We do update Lync GAL at Lync 2010 client startup

Sometimes, the phone number is normalized, sometimes not. I will post a screenshot from 2 differents sessions 9running on Windows 7)

Reply:

When you say you are updating the Lync GAL (Address Book) are you actually deleting the old files? If not delete the old files as described here:

Absolutely, we are deleting all under sip_useraccount, after that we start Lync again. What is the workflow of the data?

I've been experiencing similiar issues.  They seem to have started after we merged our OCS topology with Lync.

Have you done that?

LDAP TO OPATH CONVERSION

Hi I have an exchange 2003 organization spread in multiple active directory child domains, each domain has corresponding administrative group and  I am planning to migrate on of the child domain to Exchange 2010. And I understand that exchange 2010 use OPATH filtering instead of LDAP. Here in my case I can convert my child domain's email address policy to OPATH filter so that i can manage it from Exchange 2010.

failed connection attempt on TMG with Lync Mobility, external users can't connect

Hi, I've been having problems trying to configure the Lync Mobility service for the mobile clients. So far, I've got it working internally but externally is still an issue.

I've followed the Lync Mobility Guide and followed all the instructions, but I don't know what can be wrong here. What I've come to find out is that when monitoring with my TMG server, a user that is trying to log in to Lync is getting the following error:

Failed Connection Attempt TMGServer 1/16/2012 3:30:19 PM
Log type: Web Proxy (Reverse)
Status: 0x80090322
Rule: Lync Mobility
Source: External (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8266)
Destination: Local Host (lyncserver.mydomain.com 192.168.xxx.xxx:4443)
Request: GET http://lyncdiscover.mydomain.com/?sipuri=sip:username@mydomain.com
Filter information: Req ID: 0a258b22
Protocol: https
User: anonymous
Additional information
  • Client agent: Lync%202010/1.0 CFNetwork/485.13.9 Darwin/11.0.0
  • Object source: Internet (Source is the Internet. Object was added to the cache.)
  • Cache info: 0x0
  • Processing time: 1 MIME type:

When I run the test rule on the mobility publishing rule, I get and error when trying to connect to 4443 port on the internal server, the rule says the Target Principal Name of the Certificate is incorrect, even though I've already checked that it is the correct public certificate on the External Web Site in the Front End Server and that it is already updated the SAN adding the lyncdiscover.mydomain.com, and also reran the Lync Deployment Wizard to assign it to the External Web Site on the F.E.

I don't know what else to check, I hope someone can help out in this issue.

Thanks.

Hi,

So by the information above it seems as if you are port forwarding 80 to 4443 (to avoid adjusting the public certificate). Can you confirm this?

Generally when you get the error "Target Principal Name of the Certificate is incorrect" it means that the URL name you are calling isn't found in the certificate you have assigned to the published rule.

Have you added the name lyncdiscover.mydomain.com to the internal certificate? And is this the certificate that is assigned to the published Lync Mobility URL?

Hi Rusputan, thanks for answering, about your questions,

I'm forwading 443 to 4443 on the TMG publishing rule, also I've already updated my public certificate and included the Lyncdiscover.mydomain.com inside of it as an additional SAN.

It's kinda strange, my phone works if I connect internally then disable wireless and reconnect externally. But if I sign out and then resign in, it does work unless I connect back to internal wireless.

Which certificate is associated with the TMG rule? It needs to be a certifacte trusted by your mobile device (usually the public certificate).

Can you disable https and test again? Just to prove the internal routing is setup.

Reply:

Hi, disable https where? from outside? Already tried it and didn't work. On the inside it does, but about internal routing it is working from the TMG to the Lync FE since we are using meetings with the normal lync client to outside anonymous users, whenever we send a meeting, they go throught the Lync web components using the address https://meet.mydomain.com/meetingID

The certificate associated with the TMG rule is the same one that is associated to the Lync FE external web site. It is a public certificate so the mobile devices do trust it.

Hi everyone,

ok so here is what I did, I erased the publishing rule and just added the public name discover.mydomain.com on the current Lync Reverse Proxy Publishing Rule.

The test passed OK and now everyone is conneting from their cell phones!

I don't know why my TMG didn't like the second publishing rule using the same Listener as the Reverse Proxy but now it's working fine.

Hope this helps for anyone else having issues with this.

Thanks for all your Help!

Eduardo,

I seem to be in the same boat, and would love a bit more detail on what you did to get it to work, please... the publishing rule, do you mean you blew away the policy itself that was tailored to lync mobility specifically? and then added discover.domain.com to your main Lync Listener firewall policy on TMG?

We had TMG configured by consultants who set us up with Lync before mobility was an option, but all the walkthroughs I've followed required setting up an additional listener. I can connect great inside our corporate wifi network, but on 3g (or generally outside) I just can't get a connection to stick at all...

Thanks for any insight you can provide...

Rich

Hi Rich, what I did was to use the same Lync Reverse Proxy Publishing Rule that was working for Lync Web Components with the same listener. On that publishing rule I added the public name lyncdiscover.mydomain.com. I didn't do any new listener or any new publishing rule, just that. I tried it that way but didn't work for me, by the way I'm using Lync FE Standard, no Director just in case... Also using a public certificate, and updated it to include the SAN: lyncdiscover.mydomain.com If you have any other questions, let me know. Glad to help out.
