Rare bug with one specific user account in SBS getting somehow linked to the domain administrator account settings (RDS profile settings)

Hi there,

I have just migrated an SBS 2008 to SBS 2011 - everything works perfectly, I can create new user accounts, assign properties to them, Mail flows easily in and out of the system, users can work... BUT

When I create a user with username "la" anywhere within active directory, the system creates that user as expected with the apropriate mailbox etc. Unfortunately when I change the remote desktop profile path of that user "la" to whatever (really doesn't matter) that change is immediately also made to the administrator account! If I then remove that false setting from the administrator account - the setting of the user also disappears. SIDs of the "la" account and the "administrator" account are of course not identical.

I did a bit of testing and so far the issue only occurs when a user is named "la". Funny thing: if I create a user "lb" and set the properties (remote desktop profile and base path setting) accordingly, it works (just as one would expect in a normal environment). If I then rename the user account "lb" to "la", the properties (remote desktop profile and base path setting) are immediately filled out with the settings that are present in the administrator account (that is empty).

Has anyone ever happened to stumble on such a "neat" issue? There is absolutely no clue in the eventlogs or anywhere else in the system. It doesn't matter if I create the account "la" via SBS console or within active directory users and computers. It doesn't matter what the account's name was before - as soon as it is "la" the strange issue of linked settings with the administrator account starts... (fortunately deleting the account does not also delete the domain administrator account)

Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated!

It does sound like a bug, so i would raise it on Connect, and then use an alternate name for your account for now.

Just as a matter of interest, does anything else mirror, ie group membership?

'la' sounds like an abbreviation you are using for something else. Mind telling us the _actual_name?

It sounds like you are creating an account with similar name to an existing AD object, which should in fact fail. I'm interested in hearing what the specific name is.

Reply:

The account name is in fact "la" (the first two letters of the surname (Laschin) of the employee used as login name) and has been created using the sbs console. Creating such an account manually also shows the exact same behavior of mirroring remote desktop properties.

For now we use a different login/account name for that employee, but the behavior is more than strange and I really would like to rule out the possibility of a bigger problem hiding somewhere...

Fortunately nothing else but the settings for remote desktop profile path and base directory mirror. But I really would love to have at least a possible explanation.

Issues installing KB2628724 to fix drop down issue in Explorer 7

Hello,

I'm currently experiencing issues with drop down box in IE 7, since we installed cumulative patch KB2586448. After reading the KB article I installed the hotfix KB2628724 on the affected workstation. My understanding is that this hotfix installs version 7.00.6000.17104 of mshtml.dll which is dating from Sept 5th 2011.

On some workstation we're still having the issue after installing the patch, IE Explorer shuts soon after launching. Please Advice (ASAP)

You need to explain exactly what the situation is.

The printer connects to the computer via a USB 2.0 port.

Did you read the printer user manual or contact Canon?

64-bit driver: http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0038030.asp?model=

The instructions are in chapter 3 of the English language manual. Just read the manual and follow the instructions!

WSUS 3 SP2 Groups

Hi

WSUS 3 SP2 is running on windows 2008 standard server on port 8530. When all client computer gets updates network becomes very slow. All computers are in unassigned computers in wsus settings. I had created 4 group policies and applied on 4 groups of computers so client computers will get updates according to group policy days but for some reasons its not working. Can someone tell me steps how to implement wsus in groups so computer will divide and gets updates on different days. i m not expert in windows. All comments in this regar are highly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

If you wanna enable the client-targeting feature, change the setting in Options | Computers to use GP or registry settings on computers, define the target group name in the GPO,and then create target group name in the WSUS computer groups. After a while, the computers will appear in the groups automatically.

Notwithstanding the provided instructions for properly creating and configuring client-side targeting (or you could simply use the console and MOVE the computers to the groups you want them to be in), it's important to note that the day/time you configured in the GPO only defines the day/time when updates are installed. It does not have any control over when updates are downloaded. Updates are downloaded as soon as the client executes a detection after the updates are approved and have been downloaded to the WSUS server from Microsoft.

To minimize the load on your WSUS server and network from clients downloading update files, you should do two things:

  • Ensure the Detection Interval is Not Configured, Disabled, or set to its default of 22 hours.
  • Approve updates late in the day so that the majority of client systems will detect/download during overnight hours, rather than during working hours.

Clarence, I do believe it is Microsoft's policy to point forum participants to the official MICROSOFT documentation, not to third party websites, blogs, etc. While Adrian's blog post is not inaccurate, it is incomplete.

To that point, the correct reference for instructions on how to configure WSUS to deploy updates using Group Policy is the WSUS Deployment Guide, in the TechNet Library, in the section titled Configure Automatic Updates Using Group Policy

In this instance, though, how groups are assigned isn't really going to address Southwind's core issue, which is that he believes his network is being saturated by WUAgent download activity.

After applying above suggestions, i still cannot control network satuaration due to automatic download as clarence mentioned already. All clients simultaneusly start downloading updates. Is there any way i can control automatic updates downloads via group policy? If not how can i set automatic updates download, install and shutdown computers after updates via group policy. I am thinking to apply 2nd option after business hours. Thanks

All clients simultaneusly start downloading updates.

This is in contravention to the design principles of WSUS and the Windows Update Agent, so if this is actually happening, and it's in response to activity of WSUS and Windows Update Agent, it could only be from some non-standard configuration/implementation that has been applied to your environment.

Clients do not simultaneously check-in with the WSUS server. By design, they are staggered around a 22-hour period of time. On average, only 5% of your clients should be communicating with the WSUS server in any given hour of time. In order for ALL clients to be simultaneously downloading updates, they would have to be ALL simultaneously checking in with the WSUS server. Even if you set the Detection Interval to 1 hour (min 48 minutes) -- only 10% of your clients would be communicating with the WSUS server in any given 5-minute period.

As a starting point, please post the most recent entries from a WindowsUpdate.log showing the client detecting downloading updates from the WSUS server. The first thing to determine is that the client system is actually downloading approved updates from the WSUS server. The second thing to determine is the state of the environment.

Of course, if you simultaneously approved thousands of updates for hundreds of systems on a brand new WSUS server where those clients have not been patched in several months -- it's certainly possible that a day later it would seem that ALL of your clients are downloading simultaneously -- at that point they probably are, but only because those actions would have clogged up the environment so thickly that nothing can be completed in the normal time frames it would be completed.

Thanks lawrence for your time. Actually windows updates are due since last couple of months. I think thats why when all computers starts getting updates network is really slow. Attached is windows update log for last monday when all computers started downloading and i had stopped wsus pool from IIS after that to block windows updates to clients. please have a look on file and give your comments or i am thinking other solution to install updates after hours once all computers are updated then it will have less further updates which should be fine. Thanks

My first suggestion is to get your WSUS environment working without SSL.

Then, if you actually need SSL (most do not), you can explore the advanced skills required to properly implement SSL in a WSUS environment, which you will find documented in the WSUS Deployment Guide: Secure  the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Environment.

Hi,

SSL has a performance impact.SSL requires that you buy a trusted cert (like from Verisign) or implement your own Certificate infrastructure using something like Microsoft Certificate server.

That's why we never suggest.

The target of the LookupField property must be one of the following field types:

  • SPFieldType.Counter
  • SPFieldType.DateTime
  • SPFieldType.Number
  • SPFieldType.Text

Multi line of text would be SPFileType.Note which is not supported by the lookup field.

Outlook 2010 can't open hyperlinks to internal docs

Running into an issue where I am trying to send a hyperlink through email to allow other reach pdf files located on my local server.  I tried searching the web (and will continue) but everything is how to fix it opening with IE hyperlinks.  I used fix it, defaulted IE again, and registered the dll files,  but I can not open the hyperlinks in outlook.

I have verfied the that links work in my excel doc and it is fine until its loaded into outlook.  Now the weird thing is that there is no error,  I highlight the hyperlink and it tells me to click to open it and nothing happens.

One thing that I found as I been testing is that if I save the file to my desktop it works fine.  If I try to grab the info from the server the links will not work.  confusing.

Anyone with an idea please let me know.

Thanks

sbs 2008 backup failure error 2147942401

Hi all.
I am not able to correctly complete backup procedure.
I am trying to make a "unique backup" but at the end of procedure it terminate with this error visible form Applications and Service\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Operational event log.

Looking on Windows\Application event viewer i can see error from MSExchangeIs on the same time (one for First Storage Group and ione for Second Storage Group):

Description:Exchange VSS Writer (instance ...) has unsuccessfully completed the backup of storage group 'First Storage Group'. No log files have been truncated for this storage group.
Source:MSExchangeIS
Id Event:9782

I have also tried to execute backup stopping Exchange service and i receive the same final error from backup but obviuosly without  MsExchangeIS error on log.

Trying to execute Eseutil \mh i have seen that it can run only when Ms Exchange Storage service is stopped.

server is an SBS 2008 i am trying to backup C:\ root (where is place OS and Excahneg DB) to E:\ an USB external drive.

Can you help me to achieve it?
