Windows Vista 64 bits "Error 0x80300001 Unable to instal to that location....."

Windows Vista 64 bits "Error 0x80300001 Unable to instal to that location....."

Hello.

I've been trying for several hours now, to install Windows Vista 64 bits on my PC.

Here are my specs.

Asrock n68-vs3 UCC

Athlon II X3 3.3ghz

2GB Kingston ddr3 1333 mhz

Seagate Barracuda "7200" 200GB IDE HDD

I have an IDE DVD drive but due to technical limitations I cannot connect both my HDD and my DVD drive to my IDE Connector on the Motherboard.

Because of this I used my Windows Vista 64 bits DVD (which by the way is in perfect state and i have no reason to suspect data corruption) to create a Bootable Windows Vista USB.

The system boots up to the installation screen and It does recognize the Drive and both its partitions, but I get the MSG "Unable to install to that location etc... error 0x80300001"

What Can I do?

Ive tried using another USB drive to install HDD SATA-IDE drivers that came with the Motherboard, but I keep getting the same error

and Yes! i am pretty sure i have the Windows instail USB back on after I install the drivers.

I cant figure this one out and I dont think its because of my IDE drive since I was able to install Windows Vista 32 bit using the same drive with no problem at all.

Help !

Hello ,I was Having the same problem and i tried this to solve my problem

1. First i Loadede the RAID driver from CD. (you can use the Vista driver , it will work)
2. after the I Installed the driver and created partitions.
3. then you are needed to Remove the driver CD and insert the Windows Vista DVD.
4. Finally Clicking on Refresh Will Disappear this Error

Thanks for your reply, but as you can read above I have no CD or DVD drive, and I only have one HDD which is IDE (I dont need, and wouldnt use RAID DRIVERS with a single IDE)

Trying to reload XP

I purchased 2 Optiplex Dell computers from the company I work for (Ford Motor Company). The comps had been wiped, but they also gave me the laser etched instal CD. They both have the Windows product key sticker on them and one product key worked, but one did not. It gives me the error that "the Product ID you entered is not valid", but the key is coming from the original sticker on the computer.

Doubled, triple checked the numbers to make sure they are correct and reentered them 5 times to no avail. Any suggestions as to what to do now.

Not sure but i think some Hardware compatibility issue might be there, Like OS must be installed by ther own OS installer CD.

I think Calling the Computer vendor might help here.

Automated Outlook configuration of BPOS trasnition to O365

I am keen on understanding how the process of transition from BPOS to Office 365 would work in the real world. So can you confirm that the steps below , and more importantly how we can update the PC configurations via SCCM so the transition is seamless to the users without manually touch all 100 machines or relying on the users to do it?

Our scenario is as follows:

·         Client has approximately 100 BPOS licenses and has received their transition date.

·         They currently are running Windows XP SP3

·         They currently use Office 2007 SP2

·         They currently run IE7

·         They use SCCM 2007 R3 to deploy and remove all software from the machines

·         Users do not have local admin rights

·         They are only using Exchange Online

Requirements:

·         There should not be any manual software installations as all software must be installed and removed using SCCM

·         There should not be any user intervention for the transition, other than possibly changing their password to meet the new Password complexity requirements

BPOS Tranisition Step - Update and configure your users’ computers: This is planned to be done via SCCM as user intervention for 100+ users is not desired, however I to understanding how to deploy this update via SCCM so the users only have log into the machines and enter their O365 user ids and passwords.

I can't be the only person with this question, or am I

Please see this post for how the transition process occurs.

As for limited user interaction, the parts the user has to configure:
1) new password
2) enter in account info into Outlook 2007/2010 and let autodiscover configure everything else

This assumes that you also have the Sign-in Assistant for Office 365 included in your SCCM installs AND have the SSO client removed after the transition.

Error 777980002 during promote of MS to RMS using ManagementServerConfigTool.exe - See General forum

I believe this topic is relevant to deployment as well and just creating a link to my original posting.

Original comment available at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/2222e124-3691-4c16-a743-42070d309279

Error 777980002 during promote of MS to RMS using ManagementServerConfigTool.exe

This is just documenting a bug found in SCOM 2007 R2.

WE wanted to promote a Management Server to Root Management Server and the 'ManagementServerConfigTool.exe PromoteRMS' command failed with error 777980002, severity 16, state 1.

As per the MS technician (Henry)

That is to say, during the promotion, p_RelationshipDiscovered is called, but it failed to find a valid relationship source
I went deeper on the stored procedure and found both source and target entities are missing
• SourceEntityId=09b0476b-0f79-a84f-8d30-069f53244ef6
• TargetEntityId=90fa062f-ee7f-42a3-7c8a-70398ff49b29
Source managed entity is Microsoft.SystemCenter.HealthServiceWatchersGroup:Microsoft.SystemCenter.CollectionManagementServerWatchersGroup

This bug is due to to having only servers in the environment that were upgraded from SP1 to R2. The fix seems to be to install a new MS directly from the R2 media. Once the MS is installed, this problem will no longer occur.

For those that might run into this problem & have access to Premier Support, the case number is 112011080854453.

SQL Multivalue Table

Hi,

i have a SQL table only with two columns: CollaboratorId & RoleId. Any employee use to have more than one Role. I need to provision that table mapping the collaborator ID with every role.

I have been looking for blogs about how to manage this multivalue scenarios but have not found a really good one.

Please any guidance about it is very welcomed.

Reply:

I just did this and the schema you need is a view that displays all OBJECTS and one for the ATTRIBUTES for the multi-value attribute. I'd create a view like this (assuming T-SQL)

CREATE VIEW FIM_OBJECTS AS
SELECT DISTINCT CollaboratorId AS OBJECT_ID, 'person' AS OBJECT_TYPE FROM COLLABORATOR_ROLES
  UNION
SELECT DISTINCT RoleId AS OBJECT_ID, 'role' AS OBJECT_TYPE FROM COLLABORATOR_ROLES

CREATE VIEW FIM_ATTRIBUTES AS
SELECT CollaboratorId AS OBJECT_ID, 'role' AS ATTRIBUTE_NAME, RoleId AS VALUE FROM COLLABORATOR_ROLES

With those two views you can setup a multi-value attribute import for the attribute 'role' onto each person object assuming CollaboratorId is a person. In my case, I used 'group' for the role ID and created a group where the 'member' attribute was a reference DN to the CollaboratorId but this should get you started. You wouldn't need to union the 'role' object type in the FIM_OBJECTS view if you just want to store a multi-value attribute on the person object.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thanks Adam, it was very ilustrative.

At the end, i have created both views and configured correctly the MA for SQL.

Now, i i'm trying to figure out know how the MultiValue attribute is populated.

My scenario is:

     If MVGeneric_Role atribute is 1 --> RoleId is: "1" & "11"

     If MVGeneric_Role atribute is 6 --> RoleId is: "1" & "9" & "12" & "13"

     And So on

At Synchronization Rule, Outbound Att Flow, should i write an IIF expression to get values like: "1, 11", "1, 9, 12, 13" with RoleId as Destination? or RoleId value should be obtained number per number?

Thanks in advance!

------------------------------------
Reply:

Take a look at  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc720650(WS.10).aspx ... specifically under the heading "The structure of the references table".  The instructions above given by Adam should be read in conjunction with this article.  Once you understand the concept of the "references table" you will see that the above view "FIM_ATTRIBUTES" should be used in your scenario in place of this "references" table (scroll down to where it talks about "To import objects with multi-value attributes from a database ...").

If you set this up correctly then you will be able to use direct attribute flows.

Thanks. I think now i understand better how that multi-value attribute mapping works on that linked scenario.

But still have some doubts :-(

In that scenario, group membership from AD is being imported to the MV, then through Synchronization membership is sent to a Multi-Value attribute 'member' (referenceID) in a Reference table linked in some way with an Object table of SQL.

My scenario is a little different, i'm importing a HR table to the CS (with CollaboratorID, PositionID, Full Name, and so on), then according the PositionID value it leverages which OU in AD the user will be created on. Additionaly, according the Position ID, user will have some roles in an SQL-based Application. The table for roles at the App only has two columns: EmployeeID and RoleID, one EmployeeID value ussually is mapped to several different RoleID values, row per row.

Actually i have created two views: once for ObjectTable and another for ReferenceTable, and have succesfully created the MA for SQL indicating multi-valued attributes and so on. THE POINT IS THAT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW I WILL TAKE VALUES FROM THE HR APPLICATION AND THEN SEND THEM TO THIS SQL MA. As in the above example it just flow attributes from AD group's 'member' att to SQL MA 'member' reference (DN) att.

What i have thought is the following: I have configured and Inbound SR to obtain the role numbers the user must have according with the position ID and map them into a new "Reference (DN)" attribute in the MV called "RoleID". I'm using a custom expression like this:

IIF(Eq(PositionID,"COT4507"),"1, 11, 12, 13",IIF(Eq(PositionID,"ECT08438"),"1, 11",IIF(Eq( ..........    => RoleID

Can you please confirm i'm using the correct way trying to mapping the differnet values to the multi-value attribute, or do you have another good suggestion? I believe i have been thinking to much about it and may be my brain has stuck already.

Thanks in advance.

What i have understood is that one Reference (DN) attribute can only be mapped to another Reference attribute (like "member" of AD), am i right? what happen when the value is built with functions like my example above.

Fernando - views are useful to set up your inbound flows into FIM, but not much use for outbound flows.  Reading your scenario you have managed to get the inbound flows working OK ... and now you want outbound back to the same SQL source.  The catch here is that you would only be able to do this via the SQL MA if the single/multi-value views were actually physical tables.  I have found it is almost impossible to use the SQL MA in such a scenario for bi-directional flow because of this ... and usually use an ECMA instead.

However you CAN achieve what you are after by using a secondary SQL MA mapped directly to your "role" table (no view) where your MA has dual anchor columns ( EmployeeID and RoleID ).  You will need to ensure a 1-1 mapping for this "role" object as you sync from the FIM Portal MA => FIM MV => (new) SQL Role MA.  This means you have to have your role object defined in the FIM portal with a many-to-one relationship with /Person.  If you don't already have this and you are looking to derive this in the portal, then you are probably going to have to rely on (action) workflows to manage these relationships, and these are probably going to be best managed by set transition MPRs.

I'll leave it at that for now ... it's Christmas day and the family is stirring, so Merry Christmas!

I've done write-backs to views with instead-of triggers if an ECMA was too much work or didn't make sense.

Brilliant Brian - it never occurred to me that you could use these on SQL views, but blow me down ... this feature has been around since SQL 2000.  I'll be sure to remember this next time I need to prototype something with the SQL MA.  As for use in a production solution, that's another story ... the SQL MA is always a last resort for me because of a host of other reasons, including unexplained CS errors where views are involved, and poor performance with handling multiple object types and multi-value attributes.  Now when bi-directional flow is required I can persist a little longer before I "thrown in the towel" in favour of another MA option :).

We built a generic ADO.Net XMA to solve the SQL MA problem amongst others. You can plug any ADO.Net provider into it (SQL, Oracle, etc.,), and it all works.

BES Device Management Considerations & Using RIMs Blackberry Cloud Services (BBCS)

As many of you know, Office 365 is now able to provide Messaging capabilities to BES devices through the use of RIMs Blackberry Cloud Services (BBCS), as explained here:  https://beta.webapps.blackberry.com/businesscloud/

For Blackberry devices already configured for use, either using Business Productivity Online Standard Services (BPOS-S) or an on-premises solution, devices using BBCS will need to wipe the device and perform an Enterprise Activation in order to properly connect into BBCS and Exchange Online 365 Messaging Services.

RIM has released a great set of online article regarding using BBCS from a BES User and Device Management perspective to help administrators properly manage these devices and end-users to configure and use the new BBCS and Exchange Online messaging functionality:

Important:  This is a very important process for BES Administrators and end-users, as BES devices must be wiped in order to be reconfigured for use with BBCS.  If the export/save process is not performed, these items will be deleted with no ability to recover.

After restoring Exchnage server Backup Exec tries to restore on a exchnage server that is no longer available

Hi

I have installed Raws on our exchange server and i have scheduled backup jobs.

Backup job are successful.

i want to restore a mailbox, after restore job Backup Exec tries to restore on a server that is no longer available because we had Exchange 2007 and now we have migrated to Exchange 2010 so the restore job fails.

after that i have created a new restore job with redirecting to our exchange server that RAWS is installed but again restore job fails and tries to restore to a server that our OWA is installed on that server and RAWS is not installed on that server so the restore job fails with the following Error that i have attached can you please help me? I think that there are some records about the exchange servers that are no longer available in active directory

thanks

Reply:
If you've backed up on 2007, I would suspect you would need a 2007 server, it wont let you restore to Exch 2010.  You may need to setup a isolated env with what you had and perform a restore.

As I review your code, I'm re-reading the docs on Advanced Functions, especially
and as I see the use of zero-based counting in the Position attribute of your $PSPath parameter the
thought crossed my mind as to how hard this would be for someone new to coding to become used to
zero-based counting.

It would be like hearing a chant while at your favorite sports team's game of

"We're Number Zero!  We're Number Zero!"

There are examples at

[System.String]
in the param() clause.

I think that [String] reads better.

Reply:
A few comments on the param statement:
 [Parameter( HelpMessage = "The default settings checks against the `'IIS:\Sites\Default Web Site`'. etc...", Mandatory = $false, Position = 0, ValueFromPipeline = $true )] [System.String] $PSPath = 'IIS:\Sites\Default Web Site' )

- First, it is redundant to escape the single quote characters in a literal string contained in double quotes, as they behave in that context like normal text characters.
- Second, I believe that the helpmessage string will only be displayed when the user types "!?" when prompted to supply either a missing parameter, or when he has entered an argument that fails validation. Since -PSPath is not mandatory and you have not included any validation options (validatepattern, validateset, validaterange, etc), I do not believe that the help message will ever be displayed. If you want this string to be displayed by get-help, it should be inserted as a #comment line immediately before [system.string].
- Third, [string] is a shortcut for [system.string], so why not use it?

The zero-based index is most useful when you are computing a displacement into a fixed size block
that represents the start of a particular item in an array of fixed size objects in that block.

The first gets a (0 * size) displacement, the second a (1 * size) displacement, etc.

That's a computation needed when you use simple pointers in C (or, where I first employed it,
assembly language).

At this point, it is what it is (zero based) in PowerShell, so I just think of it as a "weed-out"
filter for programmers or admins who can or can't manage to get used to it.

I suspect that the adoption of PowerShell would be moderately faster had it been one-based, but
Microsoft chose to make PowerShell a member of the "curly brace" language family that includes C
and C#, so zero-based indexing is part of that tradition.  Also, PowerShell and the .NET framework
seem more compatible with uniform zero-based indexing as a common trait.

But I do notice that the parameter "Position" descriptions in PowerShell help files are adjusted to
be one-based.

They probably should have used "first", "second", "third" etc. in the help text.
I'm doing my own versions of the PowerShell help text formatted for a smart-phone's screen, and I

START - SEARCH BAR, should act as a calculator

It would be very handy to have the START, SEARCH BAR be able to process calculations.

i.e. START, SEARCH, =10*10/5  would pop open the calculator and display "20"

I spoke with one of the Win 7 Dev Team who had something to do with the START memu, about this two years ago and he thought that was a good idea and would incorporate it into Windows 8.  From my quick playing with Windows 8 Dev Preview, I don't think this functionality is built in.

If I could remember the Dev's name I would refer directly to him, but I have forgotten.

If you would forward this to the Dev team, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leo;

Thanks.  I had looked at CONNECT but Win8 (and Win7 for that matter) are not listed, so I thought this might be a good place for BRIEF requests.

Thanks again.

Specific subsite in site collection has http 500 error after change permissions on a list of a child site

Hello. I am having a big issue in my production environment, Sharepoint 2010 with multi tenancy, and I hope you could help me....

I have a site collection with a simple structure.

Something like…

  • Root site collection
    • Subsite1
      • Subsubsite 1.1
      • Subsubsite 1.2
      • Subsubsite 1.3
      • Subsubsite 1.4
    • Subsite 2
      • ...

I was breaking permissions on a list of Subsubsite 1.2 and now when i try to access subsite1 (parent site) I have a HTTP 500 error. If I try to access any site under subsite1 i got the following error.

I can't use powershell or sharepoint designer to manage the web subsite1 but i am able to do it in subsubsite 1.1, subsubsite1.2, etc. The rest of the site collection is working fine.

Do you have any clue for this?

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: If I try do access any of system pages, like /_layouts/settings.aspx , /_layouts/user.aspx, etc... I still get the same error.  Opening the sub subsites on sharepoint designer I have the following errors.

I think that happened because navigation "is trying to get the parent site" and can't. If I remove the menus I am able to open this page but I still can't access the parent site. This is very frustating....

Reply:
I doubt this is strictly an issue where the permissions were changed. This can happen with many coding issues also.

1) Did you do an iisreset?

2) try to access the page from the webpart maintenance page:

For the SharePoint site page

http://mossurl/default.aspx the web part maintenance page url is

http://mossurl/default.aspx?contents=1

3) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/866f931e-e964-4f95-a748-c11ccc9f9b77/

Thanks for your response.

I did an iisreset and also did a reboot in all servers, including SQL server. Nothing change... unfornately.

If I try to access the page from webpart maintance I still have the same behaviour that i described before.

At this moment i'm installing SP1 to see if something changes...

------------------------------------
Reply:

I would fix the issue before installing SP.

Try resetting the permisisons on the parent site and child site with powershell.

Reply:
Yes... you are right.  If I install SP1 the schemas will change and I wouldn't be able to restore...

Snipping tool

Suppose, I wanted to capture image from browser (for example), but it's too long so I have to scroll. Is it possible to capture it by draging the cursor or in any other way?

Reply:
harakternik,

Not with the snipping tool, no. As soon as you activate it, the rest of the screen is inactive.

Reply:

Hi,

Currently, we cannot do it by using Snipping Tool, you can try to use a third party software.

Such as: How to Capture & Save Screenshots of Webpages

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

Hope it helps.

You could try one other option... IE 8 has a magnification function... It allows you to zoom in on a page. It also gives you the option to zoom OUT... Click the little downward arrow next to where it says 100% and select 50% or 75%... snip, save and you can then use another app to enlarge the resulting graphic to it's normal size. Just a thought...

I know about third party software... But I don't want to clog the registry :-) I just wish that Microsoft will bring to the perfection such a wonderful thing as this snipping tool :-) Because it isn't right to use zoom, when (ideally) all you should do (for example) is to press alt/ctrl/shift/whatever and drag the cursor down in order to scroll and capture even very long images :-))) And the whole impression about the system consists of such trifles...

For anyone following the large "Issues..." thread, here are the steps I took to resolve it for Steve Weatherbee.

The thread is located at:

"Issue with windows server 2008 R2 active directory access"
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverDS/thread/964ca0ff-3264-4f00-bda1-5ed3a3cc2801/

The reason I'm posting it here is because that thread has grown so large, and with the numerous images in it, it takes a long time to load.

I welcome any comments, suggestions to have done it differently, critiques, etc.

More on Event ID 5106:

Went to:
Event ID 3051 and 5706 on domain controllers

Checked reg entry per article:
These error messages can occur if entries under the following registry key on the domain controller are missing or incorrect:
 KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters

Stopped netlogon service

Reg location shows a value for SYSVOL, and the SYSVOL path exists to c:\windows\sysvol\sysvol
Removed sysvol value

 Data Type: REG_SZ
 Value: 0

Value Name: DBFlag
 Data Type: REG_SZ
 Value: 0

Started Netlogon

Netlogon share still not created.
Folder are missing in SYSVOL.

This could be due to this server is a replica DC and the initial replication never occured.
I manually created the sysvol structure creating the following folders under c:\windows\sysvol\sysvol:
     ClientAgent
     Policies
     Scripts

Restarted AD Domain Services.

Netlogon successfully shared and started.

Missing policies in Policies folder.

Event ID 1058

Default Policies show up in GPMC, but cannot connect or view settings.

***********************************************************************

USed the following to rebuilt SYSVOL missing folders:

How to rebuild the SYSVOL tree and its content in a domain
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315457

Note - since this is the only DC in the domain, I used the D4 option to build a new one.
D2 would have been used to pull a copy from another DC.

To configure the SYSVOL replica set to be authoritative, follow these steps: •Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
•Locate and then click the BurFlags entry under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\Cumulative Replica Sets\GUID
GUID is the GUID of the domain system volume replica set that is shown in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\Replica Sets\GUID

•Right-click BurFlags, and then click Modify.
•Type D4 in the Value Data field (HexaDecimal), and then click OK.

No good... Ok, next step to recreate the default GPOs...

***********************************************************************
Ran:
dcgpofix /ignoreschema

Didn't have permissions to run it.
Added myself to the Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins
Logged off, then on again.

Ran the command again. Sysvol policies and everything else is now created.
GPMC now shows both policies and all settings.

Reference:

Using ADSIEdit.msc
1.Navigate to the CrossRef object for the application partition on a specific DC (CN=Partitions,CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=Com)
2.Delete the CrossRef object, essentially skipping to step 7 above.
3.Force replication, validate that the partition is gone.
4.Restart DNS, the service will re-add the partition.

Optionally, you can do it this way, too:

Using NTDSUtil:
 1.Open the CMD prompt
 2.NTDSUtil
3.Domain Management (In 2008 it changes to "partition management")
 4.Connections => connect to server ERICSDC01
 5.Quit
 6.List <--- to see zones
7.Delete NC DC=DomainDNSZones,DC=Domain DC=Com (This Deletes the CrossRef Object)
8.Force replication, validate that the partition is gone.
9.Restart DNS, the service will re-add the partition.

I wouldn't worry about this. DCDIAG is just reporting that you have a retired NTDS object (a DC). No prob there. It shows zero for any latency issues and is only flagging the one retired partner.

There are no errors and warnings, so I'm cool with this being fixed.

I was now finally able to change the replication scope of _msdcs.crl.lan to ForestDnsZones, and crl.lan to DomainDnsZones, and set Dynamic Updates to Secure only.

SharePoint Workspace Sync Error Info

SP2010 SP1 December 2011 CU.

I've been having a problem with this error "Unable to parse SOAP response. XML Error: 0x-1072896684 'Duplicate attribute.

'"" when synchronising using SP Workspace. The problem keeps popping up at seemingly random intervals and the fix has generally been to recreate the library. I finally decided to investigate it in detail and found out something interesting which I've not seen blogged or in any sites, so I thought I'd share it here. The issues is exactly as described here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010general/thread/7b165988-793c-4c44-b321-662c038602f3/. That link says that the fix was not to use required managed metadata fields in conjunction with SP Workspace though the post does also say that other people had required managed metadata fields working sometimes with SP Workspace, which was also my experience. Other blogs (famously this one http://www.cleverworkarounds.com/category/sharepoint-workspace-2010/ which has been copied ad nauseum) imply that managed metadata and SP Workspace are to be avoided. I'm not happy with that as a "solution" - it's not deterministic for starters, and copying someone's "it don't work" just doesn't cut it for me because it's often incorrect.

Anyway, after extensive tests which are repeatable in my envionment, I found that it is nothing to do with whether the field is required: it's assigning a default value to a managed metadata column in conjunciton with Webdav (explorer) that it repeatedly the issue.

I tested every one of the following permutations:

- Required management metadata column (at the column level) v Optional management metadata column (at the column level)

- Required management metadata column (at the content type level) v Optional management metadata column (at the content type level)

- Managed metadata columns allowing one value v Managed metadata columns allowing one value

- Managed metadata column with default value v Managed metadata column with no default value

- Uploading using windows explorer v  Uploading using Internet explorer

The test doc as a Word 2010 doc and after each test, I simply hit the Sync button to see if it worked. 32 tests in total. (There were a few other tests where I uploaded using Workspace, but not for every permutation, so I haven't listed those.)

As I say, the only consistent thing was that it always failed with webdav and managed metadata fields with a default value set.

Also interesting is that it worked even with required managed metadata fields provided that there was no default value. What actually happens is that it gets uploaded in checked out mode and it can't be checked in until the properties are edited to include the required fields. (With options columns, it gets uploaded in checked-in mode.) Of course, the constraint that the metadata fields are not accessible via SP Workspace still exists but at least I know how to get rid of the error now!

Hope that might help someone else - and more importantly, avoids people designing out required managed metadata columns just because there's a requirement for SP Workspace and they read somewhere that it doesn't work. :)

No problem.

Since I wrote that, I got the Sync Error on two other documents. One I resolved by renaming the document before uploading it, syncing it, then re-naming it and then syncing it. When I tried this for the other document, it didn't work! So, I opened it, re-saved it as a Word 2007 doc (it was a 2003 doc) and then uploaded it and then it worked fine. I haven't investigated in any more detail than that, but one thing appears to be the case: this problem with SP Workspace Sync has more than one cause and more than one solution. Looks like Microsoft have their work cut out. :)
