Help for ppl with creative audio cards
Download the latest drivers for your card and mediacenter etc.
Then run them in vista compability mode and also with admin priv. and they should install properly.
After this open up your windows sound manager panel and set your speakers to the system you have (it wont work in the creative panel) after this go to your creative panel and set the settings you want and everything should work except cmss-3d.
There is also a few ppl on the creative forums working on a working driver.

Event 2501 , 2412
performed nltest /dsgetsite .. receive error unable to get site name..
However perform get-exchangeserver , you will be able to see the sites.
Go to Active directory site & services , realise that there is one more sites created w/o any servers in the sites. No subnet was created as well . So decided to delete it .
Wola ... everything back to normal...
Question 1: Is the "get-exchangeserver" sites url is not the same as the nltest result ?
Question 2: Why blank sites can affect the exchange topology services ?
thanks
Reply:
I would not think that an Exchange server in an unknown site would affect Active Directory connectivity. However, it would probably affect mail delivery. Exchange Server 2007 uses the Active Directory site architecture as a boundary between Hub Transport servers. Even if you have only a single site with servers, but multiple AD sites, defined, this might (well, apparently *did*) cause problems for the Exchange topology services.
Why were sites defined that have no DCs or IP subnets associated with them?

Different backgrounds for mulit-monitor configuration
Seems like a very basic feature, and I'm boggled as to why it's not there.

Reply:
1. Select the background images for each screen
2. Create a image file big enough to cover all the displays
3. Copy image 1 and resize it for the correct size of that screen, or tile it to size of that screen (i.e copy the image normally displayed)
4. Paste the resize/tiled image into the respective position for that screen
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each screen
6. Save the file and select as the background
In effect automate what has to be done at the minute.

Go to Start --> Run, and type in services.msc.
A window will pop up with a list of services. Scroll down to Windows Audio. Right-click

Make sure that "Startup type" is set to automatic. Also, make sure, under "Service

Hope this helps! Good luck.
This did the trick. I had taken it into a local shop and they didn't have a clue.....Thanks a million

Drag and drop to taskbar
1) I open up the folder where I keep them and it shows up on the taskbar, grouped with whatever other folders I have open
2) I drag the image and hover over the folder icon
3) I hover over the correct folder to bring it up on screen
4) I drop the image in to the folder
5) I restore focus to the browser
Either that or
1) I shrink the browser
2) I open the folder (as above)
3) I move it from out behind the browser
4) I drag and drop the image
5) I maximise the browser again
But how about
1) I open up the folder...
2) I drag the image and hover over the folder icon
3) I drop the image onto the preview of the folder I want
That way I never have to leave the browser window. I'm sure there are other instance where that functionality would useful...

I do see some benefit in making it possible to drop directly on the preview, but I don't see it as a necessity.

Pinning things is good obviously, as well as re-ordering what's on the Taskbar itself but that's not nearly enough in my view.
What I would like to be able to do is create little scripts for things such as the IE icon and drag them to the taskbar instead of having to look for icons myself or have the programs etc already open in order to "pin" them on for good.
Also, having the size of things change whether open or closed is another point of issue for me as well as this space to the left or to the right depending on how it is used.
Good try Microsoft but not really good enough sorry.
------------------------------------
Reply:
As a system administrator, I can see TONS of useful benefits and harmful concerns with this. I don't think I want anything pinned without my say-so. I have enough problem with that as it is on the Desktop with program installers cluttering things up.
Granted, this is helpful too in the sense that as an admin, I could better control what is seen in a work environment, but does that benefit outweigh the potential risk?
------------------------------------
Reply:
All I would like to do is drag a file from one window on to the preview of another. So I could drag a .pdf file from my Downloads folder (which I have open maximised) into my Documents folder (which is open but hidden behind it) without changing focus.
As GoodThings2Life said, it only takes an extra second or so for the preview to become the focus-window. But then sometimes a second feels like quite a long time... And you've still got to switch focus back to your original window again. I personally find it quite disruptive.
[Oh and then there's the further annoyance that when you try and drag a file over a folder icon on the taskbar, the folder often skips out of the way because Windows thinks you want to pin the file to the taskbar...!]
.
.
.
Not that I don't generally favour the changes mind you...

Reduce those UI delays
In the Superbar:
Hover the pointer over an icon for a non-running program - it takes roughly ONE AND A HALF SECONDS for the program name to pop up. This is way too slow.
Hover the pointer over an icon for a running program - it takes about half a second for the preview to appear - slow enough to form an annoying speed bump in the smooth flow of using the Superbar.
Hover the pointer over the Show Desktop rectangle - again, there's roughly a half-second delay before it works.
I realise there have to be some pauses in the UI so things don't flash in and out of existence as an inexperienced user sweeps the mouse pointer around the screen, but I find these too long - long enough to cause frustrating speed bumps as I wait for the UI to respond.
Please, shorten these pauses, or let us control them.

Thanks for that suggestion. It certainly doesn't affect the first delay I mentioned - the 1.5s to show the program name.
I'll experiment with various values to see if it affects the other delays noticeably.

Dragging to border with multiple displays
This is probably by design as it might be hard to accurately position the mouse pointer between the two displays. But perhaps it might be possible to make a 10-pixel wide area for this.
The keyboard shortcuts are a workaround for this, but it would be nice to be able to do it with the mouse, too.
Reply:
I know i've had some issues already with windows trying to maximise without me meaning to.
I like being able to use the keyboard shortcut but its a bit too easy to do with accidentally

Reply:
I like the new ability to drag a window up to maximise, or left or right to half-maximise. But when multiple displays are present, the boundary between displays does not behave in this way. So it's not possible to easily make a window fill the right half of the left monitor.

Hi Rob
The problem with what you are suggesting is that if the 'snap window' feature was configured this way, you would not be able to drag anything between the monitors?
The whole concept of having multiple monitors is to have the benefit of one 'contiguous' screen where you can freely move things around just as if it was one big desktop.
Having the keyboard shortcuts allows users to retain the benefits of using multiple monitors and still take advantage of the 'snap window' features.
Hope this helps.

You have a window on the left monitor, and start dragging it to the right.
The mouse cursor isn't close to the edge: Nothing happens
The mouse cursor gets close to the edge: The window snaps to the right edge of the left monitor
The mouse cursor goes past the edge and ends up on the right monitor: The window snaps to the left edge of the right monitor
The mouse cursor still keeps on going: The window ends up placed normally on the right monitor
I could be mistaken, but I don't think it would be that hard to implement.
Unless it's actually a question of properly detecting the multiple monitors. I can see how that would cause problems if that's not sorted yet.

Hi Akame-san
I think one of the underlying problems is that, as far as the mouse is concerned, there is only one big screen and not multiple monitors.
It would probably take re-doing the standard mouse drivers as well as the snap window feature to make this work.
This could also have the effect of breaking a lot of third party multiple monitor utilities such as UltraMon, etc.
If this was configured, the way you described, it seems like it would be disconcerting to see a "smooth-Snap - Snap-smooth' effect when dragging a window between monitors.
Just having the programmed keyboard shortcuts solves the problem.

If you use WIN+left cursor the window will snap to the left hand side of the right monitor.
It'd be nice if there was a way to do this with the mouse, but I've not found it yet!
Edit: Beg your pardon - I overlooked you mentioned you knew the keyboard shortcuts already.

i agree almost however there are some issues with upgrades and memory theft with windows 7 still but other then that the User Interface ,Data Management , Security are all running smooth but i can not complain about the memory usage because beta is ultimate edition and its lower usage then windows vista ultimate which major score on my part.
in all other accounts i believe that windows 7 is ready for marketing however lets test it more before we put it on shelf's and computers world wide. ;)

i can say for the most part that win 7 will be fully tested correction's made beta 2 released tested then if no more issue's are presented then internal gold master then public release much like GNU linux but with more testing done.
i am excited to see where it goes and will gladly buy it when it is released but i agree the system requirment's are still a little steep for the operating system that is ment to change the world.
already it is running better then vista was when it was first released but it is still not streamlined as i see it will be before public release remember this is the Vista killer it will be the ultimate upgrade from xp or vista so it will need to reflect such before it is sold.
already i see great improvment's such as DirectX 11 , UI to name a few i did not ever expect to see in such a early release we got to give them prop's this system already rock's compaired to Vista SP1.
i myself am testing on a p4 2,6gz with 1.5 gig memory old ati radeon x1050 agp card and it is running better then XP was before win7

Really?
On my system compared to xp, win7 loads my main apps noticeably quicker (photoshop/office 2007). I play games and they are equally as smooth, (and in some cases) smoother than xp. My machine boots and shuts down quicker than xp. XP can finally go to bed as far as I'm concerned.

Windows Vista 64 bit= 14,871 , 12,385 , 37,400
Windows 7 64 bit = 14,619 , 12,082 , 39,522 -253
Windows 7 32 bit = 14,092 , 11,652 , 37,983 -780
All three test were ran on the same computer.

$ gig 1060 corsair ram
3 disk drives
280 GTX HC water cooled video card
1500 W Thermotake power sup.
Koolance PS-4 water cooled case
I do like Windows 7 but they need to get the speed up a bit. I always run benchmarks to see the proof. They don't lie and when done on the same computer then it is apples to apples. I was dissapointed to see Windows 7 slower. Yes everything is turned on such as debug and several trackers. I am sure it will be much faster when you turn off all the garbage to beta test with. Believe me Microsoft does have a big winner here and will change the way computers are used . I myself do like Windows 7 and will put it on all my computers.

Scores are mixed, but it is a beta. I would bet, retail will be faster across the board. I believe the issues with lower performance for me is bad graphics drivers. Once ATI gets up to speed with better drivers, i imagine much better numbers.
Regardless of scores and FPS, the quality of the image is much better, maybe due to dx10, but i would much rather play games on win7 64bit than XP any day. And just simple tasks like booting, shutdown, file management and administration is a heck of a lot better.

Bug: Taskbar with "Never combine" option enabled
When the option "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties|Taskbar|Taskbar buttons:|Never Combine" is enabled, running application windows can appear mixed with application shortcuts at the taskbar. I consider it a bug.
I think the normal behaviour with "Never Combine" should be, the running application windows never appear mixed with application shortcuts at the taskbar, in addition to not appearing combined as a single window with them at the taskbar.

Windows 7 Install Working, Now Won't Boot
I am running Windows 7 off of a 500GB internal hard drive on my Dell M1530 laptop.
Yesterday, I installed all my programs - Firefox (with all my old data backed up using FEBE), Picasa 2, Creative Suite 4, Office, O&O Defrag, Avast! AntiVirus, and Mixcraft studio. O&O and Avast! were installed a few days after the others, and were set to perform boot-time time scans / defrags. I restarted to perform the scans...
When these programs were meant to be scanning, I just witnessed a black screen with the CPU / HDD lights lit up. This went on waaaaay longer than it should have on a clean install (around 45 minutes), so I restarted. It still just boots to a black screen, right after the "Windows is Starting" screen.
I installed 7 on a second 500GB HDD I have, linking the old HD by an external drive. All the files - Program Files (x86), Program Files, Users, Windows, etc are there, but Windows Repair (off the CD) and Start Up repair say that the program cannot be fixed automatically.
Apparently system restore is off by default, which is INCREDIBLY STUPID. There are no restore points I can choose from...
Considering I still have access to all files on the previous HDD over a FireWire connection, can I somehow repair it? I'm surpirsed that the auto repair doesn't work.
I had Windows 7 setup just how I wanted it, and it was amazing. All the data is still there, but the startup fails after the "Starting Windows" screen. Copying a few files over from my new /Windows/ folder would be much easier than spending five hours installing programs and setting preferences.

It's easy to say 'rip it out' but as a person using line of business software I'll say "hang on, not so fast". It's not trivial for me to rip out and replace all of my functioning software.
I think it's a bit simplistic and naive to say it needs to be chucked out and sucks.
What has changed is better acls on the registry, attention to users folders being more segregated for security purposes and kicking our butts and that of our application developers to stop demanding administrator rights.
'Nix has it's .conf folder that can be it's achilles heel as well.
