Install doesn't prompt to create user accounts; not obvious that initial account is privileged.
Windows 7 recommends a standard account (GOOD!)
However, during the initial install, the user is prompted just to "Choose a user name for your account"
then "set a password for your account". There is no mention that this is an administrator account (which IMO should be reserved for administration, not downloading ____ or reading spam). And there is nothing to direct the clueless to set up standard accounts for themselves and family members. When they login after rebooting, they are using a needlessly risky elevated privilege level. (BAD!)
In comparison, Fedora Core (Linux) specifically prompts users to create a standard account during installation, and warns that "root" should be reserved for system maintenance. Unix and mainframe operators have known for decades that you don't give users administrative rights without a good reason, if you want your computer to still work on Monday morning.
In testing in late 2007, not one of 50 common viruses was able to infect an unprotected machine via a standard account, suggesting that this offers better protection against zero-day malware than commercial antivirus software.
Reply:
The installation process should either:
1/ Force the creation of both an administrator AND a standard account; or....
2/ Allow the user to (optionally) create a standard account at the end of the installation process, explaining the benefits.
May I suggest you use the Send Feedback facility for this?

Reply:
I believe I did.
I also crossposted to "install issues"; Darien Hawk points out that with UAC that the default account is not running with administrative privilege all the time, so that confirmation popups are required to do many system tasks. However, since they don't seem to require an actual password from an administrator account, they might succumb to click fatigue or clickjacking attacks. From a standard account, you have to enter a password. Which I must say is more convenient than "switch user" on the entire desktop.
I note in passing that many system files belong to trustedinstaller and an administrator can't change them, except by jumping through hoops such as changing the ownership. This should help a lot with malware prevention, I think.

AMD Turion 64x2 second core very high load
I just installed W7-32bit build 7000 and updated it with Windows update. No other software has been installed. Hardware is a Acer Aspire 5052NWXMi (AMD Turion 64x2 1.6GHz). The problem is that under task manager > performance, second core keeps running with nearly 100% load - but task manager > processes shows cpu to be 95% idle. If I click task manager > processes > resource monitor the resource monitor that comes up shows "system interrupts" to take around 40% cpu.
Whats eating up all my second core's CPU?

If this doesn't work it might also mean that you're having some issues with your (chipset) drivers. Have you tried getting all the latest Vista 32-bits drivers for your model from the Acer site?

If it's a driver or hardware problem you should see CPU time for Hardware Interrupts or Deferred Procedure Calls. Normally these should be blank with occasional bursts of a couple of percent at the most.

ALSO
MAKE SURE
You DO Install NForce Chipset Drivers Provided by ACER, even If It Is meant for Vista
There's no need *at this point* to Instal AMD Dual-Core Optimizer V1.1.4
When you are done Installing Chipset reboot and speculate system performance and affinity of processes and core weighting
ALSO
MAKE SURE

If none of the above works try the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer V1.1.4

I have now backed up my stuff and done a clean install to Win 7 64 bit - -no problem either
I have an XPS M1710 -
I've only had to make 3 tweaks
1)the only driver I needed was the bluetooth one. I just downloaded the Vista 64bit version and it was fine
2)I had to untick Power management on my Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG so it wouldn't fail after Sleep mode (I have a seperate post about that)
3)Untick "enable write caching on the device" on the HDD to raise the Windows Experience Indicator
Everything else went smoothly

Thanks for that.
I only unticked it because I'd read one of the posts somewhere on here... I'll tick it again.
To be honest I didn't see any change from when it was ticked to otherwise, only the WEI value improved.
I am more concerned about point 2 and the fact that I have to untick the power management on the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG to get it to work when the laptop comes out of Sleep mode. When its ticked and comes out of sleep mode the drivers dont work correctly and I always have to reboot. Unticked and it'd fine, but surely that's not the answer???
I'm surprised no one from MS has offered to look into that on my other posts as I think that is probably more of an issue :-(
Thanks
PS HDD now ticked :-)
...and guess what? the value didn't drop down but stayed at 5 after re-running the assessment... clearly something is not quite right there as it was 3 when it was last ticked

First---check the manufacturers site user forums (if they have one, most do). Users of your particular hardware are the best source of information.
Second, even after all this time, beta drivers for xp64 and vista 64 are still in beta, and the default method is to download the drivers (preferably in zip or rar format), extract the drivers to a folder, and manually install from device manager, or on reboot "found new hardware" dialog. Just point it to the folder where you have extracted the drivers, accept the dire warnings of installing unsupported drivers ( this is a beta, by the way ) and give the driver a chance to try.
Be sure to provide feedback to the people you got the drivers from, so that they may improve them.
With the large amount of interest in "7", and the generally well received 64bit version, this may finally be the OS to kill off 32bit computing in favor of 64, as win98 was the death knoll to 16 bit.
One can only hope. I am sold on the idea.

As for your programs, you may be out of Luck. As far as I know, Microsoft does not support the relocation of the Program Files folder. You can change the location in the registry, however, you would then have to copy all the files over, and the search through the entire registry for all reference values of the old location. i agree we should be able to choose where to locate it just like we get the option where to locate our Windows directory.
Microsoft Team, Can we possibly have some flexibility with this folder? Maybe and advanced tool for advanced users to create flexibility in their drive structures.

1. If using a DVI cable, switch back to the VGA cable.
2. Use the F8 boot option to force installation at 640x480 mode.
3. On 64-bit machines with 4GB installed RAM, reduce the installed memory to 1GB or 2GB (according to type of DIMMs installed)

Hi,
Semantically, in Windows 7 beta it indicates that the opened windows will be temporary minimized, which means that when you put the mouse on Desktop Preview, windows will be minimized and if the mouse is not in Desktop Preview, windows will be restored automatically. If you click on Desktop Preview, all windows will be minimized until we manually restore them. In this case the windows are minimized solidly.

Can you change the domain log on screen?
On release I am hoping to deploy Windows 7 on a domain in a primary school enviroment.
Our users will log in using their own credentials which are stored on a domain. We get enough calls to the service desk from users forgetting to change the drop down menu to log onto the domain, as such I am positive that having to click "Switch User", "Other users" then manualy typing in a domain name then a username will be beyond most of our end users, and more than likley a deal breaker when it comes to the issue of upgrading.
Is it possible to change the UI so that the last user is NOT remembered, and that the domain is availible from a drop down menu?
Regards
Simon

I can help you on half of your question. There is a policy in Group Policy named Interactive logon: Do not display last user name (Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Local Policies --> Security Options) that does exactly what the name suggests.
As for the second half of your question, I'm not aware of any group policy setting that will bring back the Windows XP style drop down menu. You could display a message a logon using the Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on and Interactive logon: Message title for users attempting to log on (same location as before) to set the title and text of the message respectively.
I would be interested to know if there is a better policy setting for the later question.

Once you bring your Windows 7 system up on a domain, the login will default the domain; therefore, you students will be okay in this regard. Only when you have to logon using a local account will you have to first type the machine name followed by the local username.

Right click the TaskBar choose Options, on the TaskBar Tab you have more options available for the TaskBar appearance, and drop down boxes for 2 categories give more variance in the grouping and access.

The THING that has made me really appreciate Windows 7...
I have been using Windows 7 for about a week now and have finally gotten used to using many of it's cool features, the "jump lists" on the taskbar being my favorite. Anyway, today I wanted to check out the new IE8 RC1 client so I booted back into my Vista drive.
What a DIFFERENCE! It really really made me appreciate W7. There is something just kind of 'clunky" about Vista that W7 overcomes. It just looks and feels better in every way. I originally hated the W7 taskbar, but now love it. I use it vertically on my second monitor so the spacing of the icons looks better.
Well, YMMV, but for now, I'm quite happy with W7.

I highly recommend placing your taskbar vertically along one edge. If this causes space problems, set it to automatically hide. If you are using a single monitor, it is probably best placed along the right side as you may 'accidentally' select it when using programs like Word if it is on the left side.
I am just saying this because the taskbar seems to look and function better vertically IMHO.

A strange bug, but, every time I connect to my brothers computer in Scotland using a VPN connection [I live in The Netherlands] I am also getting a blue screen of death [BSOD] which is preceeded by a crash of explorer.exe when transferring files from the local server. I've tried transferring several times now and every time the entire system crashes, first explorer.exe crashes, reinstalls itself automatically and is followed by a BSOD after the transfer has been active for +/- 5 minutes. To ensure its not being caused by any other programme I've been running the VPN connection with no other programmes open or running. In Vista Home Premium I never experienced this problem when transferring/ swapping files from the local server over the VPN network set up on my system.
When the VPN connection is disconnected Windows 7 runs fine, no problems in fact. This problem is making networking via VPN impossible for me in Windows 7.
Has anyone else experienced this problem when transferring files via a VPN in Windows 7 beta and is there a fix? I have Windows 7 beta, build 7000, 64 bit installed.

I'd make a motion to state that 2a) was the solution (albeit band-aide at that) - from my testing I had updated my broadcom 440x NIC driver to the newest available off broadcom's website and as long as I keep the drive mapped BSOD as sure as if I used a stopwatch to time it.
However when it's not mapped it doesn't die a horrible death.
This is something that has been reported to MS through feedback a few times by myself (don't know how quickly they read those). I know in my instance it appears to be related to samba file sharing (Fedora 8 server on lan in my case).
The AV issue itself is something else entirely I think. I know I removed AVG 8 off my dell E1505 as soon as that started giving me grief.
Hopefully MS will give us some form of hotfix ASAP to resolve whatever is giving this amount of grief as network sharing/mapped drives definitely needs to fall under high priority considering how many users utilize such features.
Also to further note:
I saw this one time when copying a 2GB+ directory of video files from a Buffalo Storage NAS device to a Win7 32-bit PC. The BSOD indicated tdx.sys as the culprit. I have not seen the error other than that one time. Most things I've read seem to indicate the network driver as the culprit in such cases, FWIW.
Same here - as Andrew indicated earlier I'm also seeing it as a tdx.sys error.

Remove/uninstall AVG and then manually go through the registry (good ole fashioned regedit still works fine btw) and remove any AVG keys/entries.
Once I fully removed AVG out the tdx.sys BSOD error seems to have bit the dust. Mind you it would be nice to see win7 not have AV issues as it is currently (a ton of the current market ones are giving royal headaches lately).
Regardless the above seems to have fixed things now (my issue isn't the same however similar, samba shares over network as a mapped drive).

What is the format of disk(1)/part(1) where your media is stored? Probably more importantly, in which OS did you create the file system? Did you use Fedora to create and format the partition?
I have seen instances where an OS that writes NTFS outside of Windows may cause the symptoms you are describing.
If the partition is NTFS created with XP or if its formatted as FAT32 (vFAT for Fedora), then you do have an interesting issue.

My working with W7 has been smooth and mostly trouble free! After using Vista and now getting used to the better side of W7, if you're having a problem with the H/D, try the re-naming of all the devices you are using and then re-assign the original lettering as would be normal after installation.
Unless you have tried this, give the H/D a thorough Scan for viruses, malware etc and if your problem persists just save everything you are using and then completely re-format from the ISO image and save yourself time and re-install Windows 7 from scratch.
If you had XP or Vista on this before your beta windows 7, did you upgrade or wipe and install a cleaned H/D version? Go for the fresh start and only keep what you want for the beta.
My only gripe really is the the little habits you have for using shortcuts, generally if you do what I have tried you may cure the problem with H/D `0' !
See how you get on...
