Install doesn't prompt to create user accounts; not obvious that initial account is privileged.

Install doesn't prompt to create user accounts; not obvious that initial account is privileged.

Standard accounts are much safer to use online than administrative accounts. Under Manage Accounts -> Create New Account
Windows 7 recommends a standard account (GOOD!)

However, during the initial install, the user is prompted just to "Choose a user name for your account"
then "set a password for your account". There is no mention that this is an administrator account (which IMO should be reserved for administration, not downloading ____ or reading spam). And there is nothing to direct the clueless to set up standard accounts for themselves and family members. When they login after rebooting, they are using a needlessly risky elevated privilege level. (BAD!)

In comparison, Fedora Core (Linux) specifically prompts users to create a standard account during installation, and warns that "root" should be reserved for system maintenance. Unix and mainframe operators have known for decades that you don't give users administrative rights without a good reason, if you want your computer to still work on Monday morning.

In testing in late 2007, not one of 50 common viruses was able to infect an unprotected machine via a standard account, suggesting that this offers better protection against zero-day malware than commercial antivirus software.

Reply:
I absolutely agree, and think this is a great idea.

The installation process should either:

1/ Force the creation of both an administrator AND a standard account; or....

2/ Allow the user to (optionally) create a standard account at the end of the installation process, explaining the benefits.

May I suggest you use the Send Feedback facility for this?

> May I suggest you use the Send Feedback facility for this?

I believe I did.

I also crossposted to "install issues"; Darien Hawk points out that with UAC that the default account is not running with administrative privilege all the time, so that confirmation popups are required to do many system tasks. However, since they don't seem to require an actual password from an administrator account, they might succumb to click fatigue or clickjacking attacks. From a standard account, you have to enter a password. Which I must say is more convenient than "switch user" on the entire desktop.

I note in passing that  many system files belong to trustedinstaller and an administrator can't change them, except by jumping through hoops such as changing the ownership. This should help a lot with malware prevention, I think.

AMD Turion 64x2 second core very high load

I just installed W7-32bit build 7000 and updated it with Windows update.  No other software has been installed. Hardware is a Acer Aspire 5052NWXMi (AMD Turion 64x2 1.6GHz).  The problem is that under task manager > performance, second core keeps running with nearly 100% load - but task manager > processes shows cpu to be 95% idle. If I click task manager > processes > resource monitor the resource monitor that comes up shows "system interrupts" to take around 40% cpu.

Whats eating up all my second core's CPU?

If this doesn't work it might also mean that you're having some issues with your (chipset) drivers. Have you tried getting all the latest Vista 32-bits drivers for your model from the Acer site?

A bad driver or defective hardware can cause that symptom. I have most often seen it with wireless network adapters. Try turning the wireless adapter off. You could also download Process Explorer.

If it's a driver or hardware problem you should see CPU time for Hardware Interrupts or Deferred Procedure Calls. Normally these should be blank with occasional bursts of a couple of percent at the most.

The TL60 Is an Aspire 7520 Lappy
The TL62 Is a HP Pavilion DV Series Lappy also

My guess Is to check the process that draws more juice and play with the affinity
and when done playing set It back to default and check how It goes

ALSO
MAKE SURE

You DO Install NForce Chipset Drivers Provided by ACER, even If It Is meant for Vista
There's no need *at this point* to Instal AMD Dual-Core Optimizer V1.1.4
When you are done Installing Chipset reboot and speculate system performance and affinity of processes and core weighting

ALSO
MAKE SURE

NONE of ACER supplemental programs are Installed
NONE
Especially the Power Management Applet and Windows Mobility Center Enhancer by ACER

If none of the above works try the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer V1.1.4
It must be your last step/refuge as Windows 7 comes already with support and optimizations for multicore processors

Chrome Tabs - No 'Peek' available

Would be nice if the task bar could provide the Peek view of all Google Chrome tabs like it does for IE.

Haven't tried FFOX but i'd think Win7 should support all browsers and this PEEK capability is super cool - hoping it gets enabled...

As I understand it, this peek view has to be implemented in each application for it to be supported. Currently, only IE has implemented this feature, but others I'm sure will follow. As far as Firefox, it does not support Aero Peek yet but hopefully they will soon (maybe through a plugin?)

IE was designed to use the peek feature. I am sure as 7 gets close to release or a little after FF and Chrome will update their browsers to support peek, the loading feature, and maybe some other stuff.

Another solution for black screen on first login LCD/TFT

Apparently due to a bad refresh rate setting on LCD monitors
Many people have suggested either:

- Pressing F8 and selecting 640x480 mode

- Try using CRT monitor or dsub.

In my case (VAIO sz-28 laptop) booting 640x480 would not fix the problem, it would still black screen.  I have noticed others have the same problem. And I dont have a CRT to test out that particular solution.

I did find two work arounds:

2) Task manager trick
- Boot normally, login to black screen of doom
- After HDD activity has settled, indicating login has probably completed, Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
- Press down key 4 times (moving from Lock this computer, to task manager)
- Press enter
- Press escape multiple times.
- Screen comes alive

Bizzare, but it works for me.  Once fixed Hibernate will recover display perfectly.  I only need to take these steps again after restart/shutdown.

I can only guess that there must be some modal dialog avaiting input but which has no key focus, and on exiting the task manager with esc, said modal dialog gains focus and pressing escape closes it and allows the screen to revert to correct refresh rate?!

1) Using VGA driver
- F8 - Boot to safe mode
- Open device manager
- Upgrade device driver for display adapter
- Select browse manually
- Select let me pick drivers
- Select standard VGA adapter
- Restart

In my case, this at least got my system up and running, I could even set the native res of my LCD.

SiS 661 Chipset Driver incompatible w/ Nvidia 7000 Series GPU's

I have an oold Acer AcerPower S260 that uses the Sis 661 northbridge chipset. the driver for the "SIS CPU to AGP controller" or "SIS Accelerated Graphics Port" that comes in windows vista and windows 7 is incompatible with any Nvidia 7000 Series GPU that is running on it. The driver Causes severe Artifacting in D3D applications. It basically Causes polygons to Detach from most of their Neighboring polygons and Stretch accross the D3D object, or in a level, accros the whole screen. this is most likely caused by incomplete driver testing by SIS before the driver was released for vista. as the driver date is like september of 06. A new driver and proper testing would help please

Those drivers are controller by nVidia.  You would have to contact them and report this issue for them to start working on a resolution to get them working together.

You want to make sure you have a Vista 64-bits driver handy for most of your hardware, but that shouldn't be a problem with your XPS420. At least have a 64-bits driver for your network adapter ready so you can connect to the net right away if Windows 7 fails to recognize it.

I started off like you with the 32bit version...fine

I have now backed up my stuff and done a clean install to Win 7 64 bit - -no problem either

I have an XPS M1710 -

I've only had to make 3 tweaks

1)the only driver I needed was the bluetooth one. I just downloaded the Vista 64bit version and it was fine
2)I had to untick Power management on my Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG so it wouldn't fail after Sleep mode (I have a seperate post about that)
3)Untick "enable write caching on the device" on the HDD to raise the Windows Experience Indicator

Everything else went smoothly

Wait a second - the WEI is bugged right now and the displayed rating isn't indicative at all. It is definitely not recommended to permanently disable write caching for any HD!

Hi
Thanks for that.

I only unticked it because I'd read one of the posts somewhere on here... I'll tick it again.

To be honest I didn't see any change from when it was ticked to otherwise, only the WEI value improved.

I am more concerned about point 2 and the fact that I have to untick the power management on the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG to get it to work when the laptop comes out of Sleep mode. When its ticked and comes out of sleep mode the drivers dont work correctly and I always have to reboot. Unticked and it'd fine, but surely that's not the answer???

I'm surprised no one from MS has offered to look into that on my other posts as I think that is probably more of an issue :-(

Thanks

PS HDD now ticked :-)

...and guess what? the value didn't drop down but stayed at 5 after re-running the assessment... clearly something is not quite  right there as it was 3 when it was last ticked

I have run into a few driver issues on 7x64, and have a default method for those unfamiliar with getting 64bit drivers to sometimes work.
First---check the manufacturers site user forums (if they have one, most do). Users of your particular hardware are the best source of information.
Second, even after all this time, beta drivers for xp64 and vista 64 are still in beta, and the default method is to download the drivers (preferably in zip or rar format), extract the drivers to a folder, and manually install from device manager, or on reboot "found new hardware" dialog. Just point it to the folder where you have extracted the drivers, accept the dire warnings of installing unsupported drivers ( this is a beta, by the way ) and give the driver a chance to try.
Be sure to provide feedback to the people you got the drivers from, so that they may improve them.
With the large amount of interest in "7", and the generally well received 64bit version, this may finally be the OS to kill off 32bit computing in favor of 64, as win98 was the death knoll to 16 bit.
One can only hope. I am sold on the idea.

Changing Default Hard Drive

Currently my hard drive is partitioned into 2 sections, 10gb for the OS, and ~100GB for everything else. unfortunately, windows had designated the OS partition as the primary storage location for program installations, music, pictures etc. How can I change this?

For your documents, music, pictures etc..   Open up your Computer folder from the Start Menu.   In the left pane, look for "Libraries".  Right click on "Documents" .  Click properties.  From the properties Window you may remove a folder, add a new folder (such as on the other drive) and remove those which you do not want displayed.

As for your programs, you may be out of Luck.  As far as I know, Microsoft does not support the relocation of the Program Files folder.  You can change the location in the registry, however, you would then have to copy all the files over, and the search through the entire registry for all reference values of the old location.  i agree we should be able to choose where to locate it just like we get the option where to locate our Windows directory.

Microsoft Team, Can we possibly have some flexibility with this folder?  Maybe and advanced tool for advanced users to create flexibility in their drive structures.

------------------------------------
Reply:
To relocate programs the easiest way is to install them using custom options in the installer routine - and then point the installer at the other drive.  This will allow the installer to create the proper registry entries pointing to the other drive (rather than the C: drive).

Several "try this" ideas have come about over the past three weeks... here they are as I've accumulated them from the hundreds of threads posted. Many of these are of particular interest to "high-end" machines.

1. If using a DVI cable, switch back to the VGA cable.

2. Use the F8 boot option to force installation at 640x480 mode.

3. On 64-bit machines with 4GB installed RAM, reduce the installed memory to 1GB or 2GB (according to type of DIMMs installed)

How vga connected monitor will solve freeze problem and why you think vga ia better than dvi?

------------------------------------
Reply:
It's not better, but there are driver issues, that currently can only be resolved by using a VGA connector. Due to for some reason the frequency defaulting to 59Hz, which causes problems with some hardware displaying picture.

see this thread for one of the diagnoses

Ok but if there is some issue with frquenci it must be on vga connevted displays but not to dvi one. What can be this issue tha set dvi display inproperly?
If we asume there is 59 Hz issue why analog input works but dvi not?
If there is 59 Hz issue how it will make install to freeze?
Who and how is detected that video connected to dvi runs on 59Hz if all freeze?
Whi if frquency is not in range system freeze instead display to shut off?
Whi my dvi connected system did not freezed?

I cannot see any logic this to be caused of some 59Hz issued that I doubt can be detected

I think that all these question shows that this cannot be issue here.

It there anybody who can answer all my questions above all?

The Taskbar Properties page misnomer

The Taskbar Properties dialog says that the Desktop Preview (far right of the taskbar) temporarily minimizes open windows when you point at it.  In actuality it only hides open windows, their state does not change until you click it.

Hi,

Semantically, in Windows 7 beta it indicates that the opened windows will be temporary minimized, which means that when you put the mouse on Desktop Preview, windows will be minimized and if the mouse is not in Desktop Preview, windows will be restored automatically. If you click on Desktop Preview, all windows will be minimized until we manually restore them. In this case the windows are minimized solidly.

Can you change the domain log on screen?

On release I am hoping to deploy Windows 7 on a domain in a primary school enviroment.

Our users will log in using their own credentials which are stored on a domain. We get enough calls to the service desk from users forgetting to change the drop down menu to log onto the domain, as such I am positive that having to click "Switch User", "Other users" then manualy typing in a domain name then a username will be beyond most of our end users, and more than likley a deal breaker when it comes to the issue of upgrading.

Is it possible to change the UI so that the last user is NOT remembered, and that the domain is availible from a drop down menu?

Regards

Simon

I can help you on half of your question. There is a policy in Group Policy named Interactive logon: Do not display last user name (Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Local Policies --> Security Options) that does exactly what the name suggests.

As for the second half of your question, I'm not aware of any group policy setting that will bring back the Windows XP style drop down menu. You could display a message a logon using the Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on  and Interactive logon: Message title for users attempting to log on (same location as before) to set the title and text of the message respectively.

I would be interested to know if there is a better policy setting for the later question.

Once you bring your Windows 7 system up on a domain, the login will default the domain; therefore, you students will be okay in this regard.  Only when you have to logon using a local account will you have to first type the machine name followed by the local username.

Non-modal dialogs (like properties of file or folder) get lost!

Many dialogs are non-modal but lack a handle in the taskbar. This is for example true for the "properties"-dialog available by right-clicking on a folder or the properties-dialog available when browsing drives in Device Manager.

The non-modality means they are not directly attached to the parent who spawned them, so they can get lost underneath the parent.

And they don't get their own icon/handle/thingie in the task-bar. So when they get lost, they really get lost!

This has annoyed me for several years actually... Why not either give these dialogs a handle in the taskbar, or make them modal? Or put a link to them in the "right-click menu" you get by clicking app-icons in the win7-taskbar?

Reply:
It seems that Windows 7 has solved this issue. When I right-click a file in Explorer and choose Properties, the Properties dialog window adds to the Windows Explorer "stack" on the taskbar. Clicking the stack shows me two thumbnails: Windows Explorer and the Properties dialog window.

Additionally, the Properties dialog window can be accessed by Alt+Tab and Windows+Tab. Are you experiencing different results?

Hector, try using Device Manager like Torkel described. Borked. And I believe it was Vista that changed regular file property windows to appear in the Taskbar, I think XP and prior they simply floated like the device manager.

Actually in XP you had the option to stack in a single instance on the TaskBar too, or individual instances. Taskbar Grouping....

WinXP.... Vista....
Right click the TaskBar choose Options, on the TaskBar Tab check the box "Group similar TaskBar buttons".

Win7...
Right click the TaskBar choose Options,  on the TaskBar Tab you have more options available for the TaskBar appearance, and drop down boxes for 2 categories give more variance in the grouping and access.

I hope that helps...

Thanks, Vistaline, I did not test the Device Manager properties window. That one does get lost and is inaccessible via the Taskbar. I also noticed that while it can be accessed via Alt+Tab, it cannot be accessed via Windows+Tab. Some consistency here would be very nice.

The THING that has made me really appreciate Windows 7...

I have been using Windows 7 for about a week now and have finally gotten used to using many of it's cool features, the "jump lists" on the taskbar being my favorite.  Anyway, today I wanted to check out the new IE8 RC1 client so I booted back into my Vista drive.

What a DIFFERENCE!  It really really made me appreciate W7.  There is something just kind of 'clunky" about Vista that W7 overcomes.  It just looks and feels better in every way.  I originally hated the W7 taskbar, but now love it.  I use it vertically on my second monitor so the spacing of the icons looks better.

Well, YMMV, but for now, I'm quite happy with W7.

Reply:

+1 on that

I'm 100% Win 7

I highly recommend placing your taskbar vertically along one edge.  If this causes space problems, set it to automatically hide.  If you are using a single monitor, it is probably best placed along the right side as you may 'accidentally' select it when using programs like Word if it is on the left side.

I am just saying this because the taskbar seems to look and function better vertically IMHO.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I completely agree that the taskbar looks better vertically on the side. I have it placed on the left side of my screen, and it looks so much better.  The way it is designed makes it look better this way.  I think Win 7 should be shipped with a vertical taskbar by default.  Especially with the more widely available widescreen displays now, doesn't really effect my desktop space on my widescreen.

Reply:

One nice feature would be a "dividing line" that we could place on the taskbar to separate groups of our icons.  Even better, actual "group" partitions that i could place icons into that would collapse or expand, like you have in Outlook.

Yep, that is my idea for M$ - ICON GROUPS on the taskbar.

I'm a long time left Auto-hide guy. I recently have been trying it at the top. I knid of like it there. However, I still have Auto-hide issues. Everything will be working fine and then all of a sudden Auto-hide stops working. My current candidate for what causes it is Firefox. Preliminary tests indicate that if FF is not running AH works fine. Sometimes when FF is running, AH stops working. This isn't W7 specific. It's been this way for years, different versions in Win and different PCs

I have AH problems myself, but I'm not using FF. As I observed Skype is the problem, as the Skype icon turns to orange (somebody IMs me) the taskbar won't autohide again, till I check out the message. If I'm in a conference with a lot of IMs, AH doesen't work.

installation problem

i have windows 7 beta 32 bit product that i cant open iso file, what will help me.

Reply:
If you have the iso file you need to use some dvd writing software to create an image on dvd that you can install from. so somrthing like Roxio Easy DVD creator or Nero, there are others as well. If you dont have a dvd writer another option is to use a virtual dvd drive and mount it to that and run the install from there, which a couple of people have said worked for them doing an upgrade, however if your using XP currently this wont work. the last option i can think of just now would be to use winrar and extract the files to a 4gb or bigger usb stick or a folder on the hard drive and try to install from there.

Windows explorer history

Is there anyway to clear the history from the Explorer(not Internet Explorer) address bar and quick search?

With using both Windows 7 Search Federation(like Flickr Search Connectr) and the Address Toolbar(on the taskbar) the history really piles up and I simply cannot find a way to delete it even when using programs like CCleaner.

Here is your answer.

Right-click the Taskbar, go to Properties.  Click that Start Menu tab.  Uncheck Store and display recently opened items in the Start Menu and on the taskbar and click the Apply button.  Recheck the same box and click the Apply button.

Tried that before but I went ahead and did it again and still not resolving my problem. Here are a couple of screen shots showing what I need cleared.

I actually did find a way to get rid of the quick search history but it is not intuitive at all. I had to mouse over the links and hit the delete key on each item.

I see what you mean.  I can't find an easy solution either.  Seems to be an oversight.

Have you cleared the Autocomplete? IE, tools menu, options, Content tab, autocomplete settings button.

I just did a test by clearing the IE Autocomplete; however, it fails to clear the Address bar in Windows Explorer.

As for the Quick Search entries, simply select (highlight) an entry and press the DEL key. Do this for other items.

Uploading/Downloading from local network server = Bluescreen

Hey,

As the subject says, when i try to upload or download any file to my server on local network, around 3-5 min after. the computer gets Bluescreen.

I desided to do some testing. so installed Windows 7 32 bit on my laptop (thinkpad z60m), and it happends.
I also tryed installing it to my desktop computer, and the same happend.

Am i the only one that gets this bluescreen? - is there a fix

I saw this one time when copying a 2GB+ directory of video files from a Buffalo Storage NAS device to a Win7 32-bit PC.  The BSOD indicated tdx.sys as the culprit.  I have not seen the error other than that one time.  Most things I've read seem to indicate the network driver as the culprit in such cases, FWIW.

A strange bug, but, every time I connect to my brothers computer in Scotland using a VPN connection [I live in The Netherlands] I am also getting a blue screen of death [BSOD] which is preceeded by a crash of explorer.exe when transferring files from the local server. I've tried transferring several times now and every time the entire system crashes, first explorer.exe crashes, reinstalls itself automatically and is followed by a BSOD after the transfer has been active for +/- 5 minutes. To ensure its not being caused by any other programme I've been running the VPN connection with no other programmes open or running. In Vista Home Premium I never experienced this problem when transferring/ swapping files from the local server over the VPN network set up on my system.

When the VPN connection is disconnected Windows 7 runs fine, no problems in fact. This problem is making networking via VPN impossible for me in Windows 7.

Has anyone else experienced this problem when transferring files via a VPN in Windows 7 beta and is there a fix? I have Windows 7 beta, build 7000, 64 bit installed.

I do have 2 BSOD .dmp files and wonder if anyone can work out what the problem is from them.  I'm not that clued up on dump files and debugging to do anything with them myself.

This problem has been reported with several possible resolutions.

1) AV Issue.  This has been reported with 2 of the three AV products available for Windows 7.
2) Network drivers and Mapped network drives.  Depending on Driver version you could have BDOD every 5 - 15 minutes when you have mapped drives.  This was my problem.  My Dell M6300 laptop had a driver for my Broadcom ethernet that was two revisions behind.  I updated the driver and have not had an issue since.
2a) I also removed my mapped network drives, I have not rebooted since but will try later and see.

This is where I would concentrate your efforts in fixxing your BSOD proble.

Hope this helps.

I'd make a motion to state that 2a) was the solution (albeit band-aide at that) - from my testing I had updated my broadcom 440x NIC driver to the newest available off broadcom's website and as long as I keep the drive mapped BSOD as sure as if I used a stopwatch to time it.

However when it's not mapped it doesn't die a horrible death.

This is something that has been reported to MS through feedback a few times by myself (don't know how quickly they read those). I know in my instance it appears to be related to samba file sharing (Fedora 8 server on lan in my case).

The AV issue itself is something else entirely I think. I know I removed AVG 8 off my dell E1505 as soon as that started giving me grief.

Hopefully MS will give us some form of hotfix ASAP to resolve whatever is giving this amount of grief as network sharing/mapped drives definitely needs to fall under high priority considering how many users utilize such features.

Also to further note:

Same here - as Andrew indicated earlier I'm also seeing it as a tdx.sys error.

If you have installed AVG8 by any chance I'd do the following (which resolved it fully for me), this is what was posted elsewhere by pj29 here.

Remove/uninstall AVG and then manually go through the registry (good ole fashioned regedit still works fine btw) and remove any AVG keys/entries.

Once I fully removed AVG out the tdx.sys BSOD error seems to have bit the dust. Mind you it would be nice to see win7 not have AV issues as it is currently (a ton of the current market ones are giving royal headaches lately).

Regardless the above seems to have fixed things now (my issue isn't the same however similar, samba shares over network as a mapped drive).

I am running Norton 360 for AV.  I have updated my NIC drivers and this morning I rebooted for the first time.  I have not removed my mapped drives and have not BSOD for over an hour.  So far so good, keeping my fingers crossed.  Will post if there are any changes.

I spoke to soon!  Not 10 seconds after I posted my previous message I received the BSOD. :)

I now unmap my drives after logging in to the network.

Hopefull a solution will be found soon.

Hard drive still not accessable

Ok he is where i am at.

disk (0) / boot sector /windows xp partition (C:/) / windows 7 partition (E:/) / Fedora 7 partition (not assigned) / Fedora 7 swap (not assigned)

disk (1) /recovery partition (not assigned) / Media storage (not assigned)

Ok so like most people when i installed windows 7 i was unable to access one of my drives

When i click on the partitions of disk(0) It gives me the options to assign a drive letter and all the other stuff.

i went to disk MGMT to assign a drive letter. When i try to right click on any of the partitions of Disk (1) The only option is "help"

Also of volumes on disk (1) Only recovery partition is accessable visible in the top list.

I have no problem accessing this drive in windows XP. I am at a total loss as to why i cannot assign a drive letter to my media storage partition. I have not seen anyone else having this problem on any of the forums.

PLEASE HELP!!!

What is the format of disk(1)/part(1) where your media is stored?  Probably more importantly, in which OS did you create the file system?  Did you use Fedora to create and format the partition?

I have seen instances where an OS that writes NTFS outside of Windows may cause the symptoms you are describing.

If the partition is NTFS created with XP or if its formatted as FAT32 (vFAT for Fedora), then you do have an interesting issue.

The term "A picture is worth a thousand words" rings true today as it did 4000 years ago during the Xia Dynasty.

I have never seen the issue you are having. Right-click in the area where it says "Disk 1." What are the available options? If you have and can access properties, are there any weird entries under the Volumes tab?

If you can access it from Windows XP, take a screen shot of its Disk Management and post it. Maybe, just maybe, someone can compare the two and isolate an anomaly. Hopefully, one of the MVPs can chime in.

I am reposting your picture here for ease of access by others.

One thing I did prior to installing Windows 7 was to get a new 80GB H/D and then do a complete re-format of the disk via the installation of Windows 7.

My working with W7 has been smooth and mostly trouble free! After using Vista and now getting used to the better side of W7, if you're having a problem with the H/D, try the re-naming of all the devices you are using and then re-assign the original lettering as would be normal after installation.

Unless you have tried this, give the H/D a thorough Scan for viruses, malware etc and if your problem persists just save everything you are using and then completely re-format from the ISO image and save yourself time and re-install Windows 7 from scratch.

If you had XP or Vista on this before your beta windows 7, did you upgrade or wipe and install a cleaned H/D version? Go for the fresh start and only keep what you want for the beta.

My only gripe really is the the little habits you have for using shortcuts, generally if you do what I have tried you may cure the problem with H/D `0' !

See how you get on...
