Major Windows 7 Problem

Major Windows 7 Problem

Hello everyone. On January 9, I downloaded both the x86 and the x64 versions of the Windows 7 Beta from the TechNet public download site. I burnt both of the iso's to DVD's at the slowest speed possible. I also verified the integrity of the iso's by comparing their file hashes against those from the MSDN site, and they matched. The DVD's also had no problems. I Installed them in Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and all was good. So then I decided to dual boot. Using Vista's partitioning tools I made a 30 gb partition. I then put in the DVD, and rebooted. The problems began after the notebook was able to boot off from the DVD. The screen reading "Windows is loading files," came up twice. At first the bar fast, then slow. Then the new animation came up, and that's where it all began.

The screen stayed frozen at that screen, with the Windows orb glowing for about 3 hours. Setup, then commenced. Setup then restarted the computer, and same thing again, this time. The new startup animation came, and the screen was frozen at the glowing Windows logo for about another 2 hours. Setup then continued, and I was able to get to a usable desktop. However, there were more problems. Using the built in troubleshooter it said, that drivers need to be updated. One specific problem was that Aero didn't work. In my Vista, Aero works 100%. However, Windows 7 said to update my graphics card drivers, along with other drivers. I was able to update a few of the drivers using Windows Update, but not all the drivers. Windows Update then restarted the computer, and same thing again, after the new startup animation, glowing Windows icon. I did not wait for the few hours, rather I just rebooted back into Vista, and finding this site, came to post for help. However, when I boot Windows 7 in safe mode, it starts up normally.

Guys, if anyone knows, what's going on in here, can YOU GUYS PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME OUT. I waited so long for the Beta to come out, and now this happens. As far as I know, everyone else, seems to be ok. I am asumming, something is wrong with my computer, but what. I bought this HP G60-127 CL notebook about a month ago. In Vista, I have no problems. I ran some diagnostics, and it said that the hardware was good.

Here are my system specs

Processor    AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70, 2000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
3 GB RAM, a 30 GB partition for Windows 7
My Vista is a Home Premium OEM + SP1, that came on the computer.

I don't know what to do

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!!

From other forms, I have read that Microsoft has made some updates to there Iso. You may want to try and redownload them and reburn. Also do both versions give you the same slowness?

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thank You for answering to my post. Yes, both versions are like that.

*So you mean I have to redownload and reburn since Microsoft has updated the iso's.
Is this problem common or is it just me.
I mean if they updated with fixes, shouldn't it be a new build

------------------------------------
Reply:
From what I can tell. There are no real fixes like patches or anything. However several people who downloaded the iso before Microsoft reopened the servers on Sat. had issues. Also several forms mention that the size of the iso has changed since they first downloaded iso. Maybe Microsoft uploaded a bad copy to the server originally. Everyone makes mistakes.

Just a thought

nope, i tried the redownloaded version, and the same thing happens again

any ideas ...

Do you have a different laptop or pc that you can try the install on? If you have virtual PC, why Dual Boot? Why not run your Vista Home on the laptop and Win7 on the virtual PC?

Maybe there is an issue trying to dual boot between Vista Home and Windows 7 Ultimate? Have you verified that you can dual boot with Win7?

------------------------------------
Reply:
I'm sure you are aware how to Dual Boot, but maybe it would be best to follow a guide of someone who has done is successfully.

I only have this 1 laptop. Plus the reason that I wanted to dual boot is because in VPC, theres limitations such as the graphics card and so on. I dontl know what causes this.

Control Panel not working

When I try to open Control Panel it will open and then close or open and have no Categorys. How can I fix this?

Was this a fresh install of Windows 7 or a upgrade from Windows Vista?

Upgrade from Vista. 64bit Ultimate, if it helps.

Mine won't even open, if I click in anyway the control panel, I mean open it from any location, it crashes the explorer and restart. Clean 7 install.

Anyone?

new install on 64bit wm7 public beta release works just fine.  let me know if you want the link to where the program sits. i'm guessing the update install won't be as clean as the new install.

These are the two traditional fixes in Vista. I suggest you create a system restore point then have a look at these registry keys:

1. If some items are missing, click the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don'tload and delete items in the right pane that you want to see in Control Panel.

2. If Control Panel is not appearing at all, click the Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. In the right pane look for NoControlPanel, right-click it and make its value 0 (zero).

If you are denied entry to regedit it's a classic symptom of infection.

The problem is with Windows 7 not Vista.

I had a look at what you suggested anyway, but there is no "Don't load" as far as I can see.

I'm quite aware that you're running Win7. I thought I would give you a long shot and perhaps sort out your problem!

Did you look for the second key?

Is the machine 'clean'?

Reply:
Tried both.

And yes, as far as I know its clean.

Here is another 'straw-clutcher', which I'm not greatly confident will cure the issue but you have to try everything:

Run the System File Checker (SFC) from an elevated Command Prompt, i.e. click the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then 'Run as Administrator'. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and, depending upon your installation of Windows, you may have to put the DVD in the drive.

SFC appends its results to a log file named CBS.log, which is located in the \Windows\Logs\CBS folder. Use Notepad to read it (you may need to run Notepad as the Administrator).

To find the errors, go to the end of the file (Ctrl+End) then use 'Find' (Ctrl+F) to check for the words 'cannot repair', use search 'Up' to search upwards from the end of the file.

------------------------------------
Reply:
K done that, but, there is no log. ;_;

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h266/uberolly/NoLog.png

------------------------------------
Reply:
You do have a log file (CBS) but you're not showing file extensions.

Your scan was clean but to see extensions, go to Folder Options > View Tab, scroll down to show Hidden files, System files and known Extensions.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Access denied when I try to open it.

------------------------------------
Reply:
SFC didn't find anything but if you want to see the log just as a familiarity exercise:

Right-click Notepad > Run as Administrator, then File > Open.

Having to Disable and Re-Enable Network Interface Every Time Before Use

Every time I reconnect to a wired network after using my wireless interface, I am forced to disable and then re-enable the wired network interface in order for Windows to find my local gateway; without flapping the interface, the task panel icon reports that I only have local connectivity.

This happens consistently and consistently on every wired network I use. I've tried disabling IPv6 and Autoconfiguration on all of my interface and have had no luck.

This has been an issue for as long as I've been using Windows Vista and would like to fix it as I've gotten most of the other annoyances to tolerable levels.

Hi,

First, I would like to confirm:

1.    How do you switch from the wireless network to the wired network?

2.    Can the Windows Vista machine get the IP address from the DHCP server when the issue occurs?

3.    Can you ping the default gateway from the Windows Vista machine when the issue occurs?

And then, please collect the following information for further research:

1.    When the issue occurs, please type the command ipconfig /all and copy the output to here.

2.    When the issue occurs, please type the command route print and copy the output to here.

3.    When the issue occurs, try to access the website http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt and check the result. If it fails, please click Diagnose Connection Problems in the Internet Explorer, and let me know the result.

4.    After resetting the network connection (the issue disappears), type the commands ipconfig /all and route print and copy the output of them to here.

You could zip the above information and upload the following space:

https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=7ab14d36-4aa4-4085-b096-a160bc912362

Password: D!X1@SSB1vIjB^a]

Additionally, when the issue occurs, please type the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, and then check if the issue can be solved.

I look forward to your response.

Hello,

I'm having the same issues, with a wireless connection on one machine, and a wired and wireless connection on another machine.  The machine does get the IP address from DHCP server, and I can ping the default gateway.  Although when I run ipconfig /all the default gateway does not show up.  I tried zipping you my results from everything you wanted us to try and it said the password was wrong.  Any ideas?  Ipconfig/release and renew does solve the problem, but just like resetting the connection it only works until there is a reboot, then I have to do it again, and I shouldn't!!

Please respond as soon as possible.

Thanks,

DM2

I just wanted to throw something out by way of information. DM2 (opensource window management utillity) works partially. It hasnt crashed, but it only works with the floating icons. The changes to the taskbar broke the minimize to tray function.

64 bit, but that shouldnt be a difference in this case.

BITS and conficker

We mainly use SCCM 2007 for application deployment.
One of the side-effects of the recent conficker worm is that it leaves the BITS and AU services in a bad state. They get set to disabled and stopped.
We already have a GPO that enforces them to be the correct state but a lot of our clients have problems starting them (service specific error: 2147467243) and I use "sc \\systemname sdset bits "xyz"" to get BITs to start again.

This is catch 22 for me, I have a lot of clients that aren't receiving advertisements because of BITs can't start and everything works fine when I run the sc sdset but I don't really want to do this for each and every client and even if that is the only way, the clients currently offline or inaccessible will get missed.

This is going to add a lot of work but I am hoping some of you have a more efficient solution to this.

Thank you!

You could use ConfigMgr to create a batch file for you, of you problem PCs.

Windows 7's Installer no longer Installs or Removes programs.

I installed Kaspersky Antivirus 8.0 and didn't like it.  So I decided to get rid of it.  Upon attempting to run the uninstaller however, I get this message:

Windows Installer has stopped working.

Another windows asks if I want to send more information.  I hit yes, if only to give Microsoft benchmarks on how many times this crashes.

Thinking it may be a problem with Kaspersky's installer, I moved on and tried to install Google Gears.  It, too, gets the crashed Windows installer message.

Rebooting the computer isn't working.

Is there a workaround, short of blowing up my Win7 install and starting fresh, for getting Windows Installer to work?  A way to reinstall just Windows Installer?

(On a side note, is there a good, free partition copying software out there?  If I'm going to be reinstalling Windows 7 over and over again, I'd like to just ghost the parition onto my RAID array and refresh the partition if things go belly up)

Reply:
try using system restore to a point before you installed it... it won't clean everything up but hopefully it will fix that larger uninstaller crashing issue.

Sorry, this native of Linux Land forgot all about System Restore.

Tried it, but it still didn't work.

Any other way to fix "Windows Installer" short of a reinstall?

Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can repair from the disk.

Is there a service, process, or executable file I could kill and/or delete and trick Windows into getting a new "copy" of Windows Installer?  I don't know how "core" Windows Installer is;  I don't know if there's a process similar to doing an end-run around a malfunctioning Debian apt-get, for example.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I'm having the same problem. I tried to install the Citrix client software and the Windows Installer crashed - 17 times so far. I'm not sure about doing a Restore, as I just installed it 10 hours ago!

------------------------------------
Reply:
Go ahead and give restore a try;  it can't hurt.  But it didn't fix my problems.

When I got home tonight, I'll be wiping out the installation, building a new one, installing my drivers, and then making an image of the partition, so if I hit this type of snag again I can ditch out to my backup.

And I only had 20 hours of uptime over here before my problem as well :D

Perhaps Installer is just beta, or it hung on something internally?  As I can't figure out a way to uninstall and reinstall Windows Installer, there's no way for me, the end user, to know what's at fault.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Your easiest shot at repairing the installer (at least enought to install the Installer cleanup utility for other installer problems) is to run SFC:

1.Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

3.If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

4.At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

It might be the same problem as written here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/eeab2dad-b6ce-4bad-9a9b-8d39487e10b7

The proposed solution is:

start regedit
navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
rename MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling

This isn't the only Security software that is having issues... I decided to remove AVG 8.0 and got a blue screen.  Restarted and uninstalled again with no issue.

But what can ya do?  This is a beta OS with a beta app.

Solve a problem with Windows 7 beta

An issue with the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) client in Windows 7 beta is causing Explorer and some MSI-based installers to stop working properly.

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

  2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. In the User Account Control window, verify that Program name is Windows Command Processor, and then click Yes.

  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type or paste the following text at the prompt:

    reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

  4. Press Enter to install the solution.

  5. If The operation completed successfully displays, close the Administrator: Command Prompt window to complete this procedure. If "ERROR: Access is denied" displays, repeat this procedure from the top, making sure you clicked Run as administrator in step two.

Bootup issue

I have win 7 Beta installed on my PC. The problem I am having with it is when I press the power button on my PC about 10 seconds into it, I see a blank screen with the cursor blinking for about 3 minutes before I see starting windows screen and then it will take less than another minute until I get to my desktop.

What would be causing this 3 minute pause before reaching the windows starting screen. I do not have a printer or any USB device hooked up to this PC. Any ideas and help are welcomed and appreciated.

thx

This is usually caused by a hardware issue. Check the device manager for any yellow marks.

There was this issue Under "other devices" there is 2 entries of "IPMI interfaces" and "PCI serial Port" with yellow ! point next to them. But I found this

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/87674-interface-ipmi.html

So I disabled both of them. However, I am still having the same issue with my PC. My PC is 32BIT. Any other ideas on what could be causing this issue? I appreciate your help.

thanks

After installing Windows 7, did you install your chipset drivers? What type of PC or motherboard?

Can it be your bios is looking for the boot manager? Change bios so that the hard drive with the boot folder is first in boot order.

HD is the first listed in BIOS to load first. Any other ideas?

Bluetooth Audio

When there is some activity on the desktop audio playback over Bluetooth A2DP gets faster like a turntable runs to fast.

Is there a Sound card that will positively work with Windows 7 beta ?

Is there a Sound card that will positively work with Windows 7 beta ?
The biggest problem I'm getting is " Unidentified OS "
And the ones I've tried all said Vista compatible.
Also I've tried installing with the compatibility modes.
It's a long story but I need an external card.
Thanks

i have just bought a terratec 5.1 MKII on usb and that works fine as my mother boards on board sound refused to go into 5.1

Nice side effect is the headphone output is a down mix of the 5.1 and not just left and right.

It did sudenly shift all the speakers left last night (right became centre, cventre became left etc.)  but other wise its been good as gold.

I have found that if you turn off exclusive mode for the sound card, it solves many problems.

My X-Fi Elite pro is working in Win 7 (installed latest drivers in "Vista compatibility" mode).

5.1 sound works fine for DVD/TV playback, but CMSS is not working for audio files. There is another driver on the Creative forums that seems to enable this, although I haven't had a chance to download and try yet.

Haven't tried the onboard realtek audio or HDMI from my HD4850 yet.

Stuff isn't loading anymore

First, my system specs:

asus a8n-sli premium
amd x2 4400+
2gb corsair xms
evga 8800gtx
dual boot w/XP 32bit and windows 7 64bit

for some reason, when i open the control panel, it never loads any icons.  the window actually pops up, and that gray bar goes across in the address bar, but no icons show up.  so i can't do anything from control panel.

also, when i right click my computer and go to properties, nothing ever happens.  no window pops up or anything.  the computer will "think" for like 3 seconds, but then stops "thinking" as if i never told it to do anything.  it does the same thing whenever i try to open up Steam.  it acts like it's loading something for like 5 seconds, then it'll stop doing what its doing and never load it.  i've tried reinstalling steam, but that didn't work.

it didn't always do this.  the system was running great until i decided to boot into xp one day.  i made no software changes or installed any updates before i rebooted.

Reply:
That's awkward. My dual boot XP/7 setup has never given me any problems, even though I'm switching back and forth all the time.

This might sound silly, but which drivers are you running right now for your NVIDIA card?

This forum is moving the week of 1/27/2009

Microsoft has created a new forums platform (MSDN | TechNet | Expression | Microsoft) with increased performance, stability, and an improved user experience. During the week of 1/27/2009 this forum will move from the Forums 2.x Platform (http://forums.microsoft.com/) to the Forums 3.x Platform. To make sure this is a smooth transition, we want everyone using this forum to have a chance to try out the new forums in advance, and give feedback. We've created a Sandbox forum, where you can create threads and try out functionality, and a suggestions forum where you can give us your feedback. Please take some time to go to the new forums today and let us know what you think.

On the day the forum moves to the new platform, a post will be made letting you know the process has been started, and the forum will be locked to new posts. Once the process is complete, a final post to the forum will be made letting you know the forum has moved.

1.       All posts in the forum will be preserved

2.       Any points you've received for replies will move with you (on a per forum basis)

3.       Any bookmarks to this forum or threads within this forum will redirect to their new location

4.       Your "My Threads" will be preserved on the new platform

The only thing you'll need to do after migration is set Windows Live Alerts for any threads you were tracking.

Icon Missing For Open .exe in Windows Explorer's Main Toolbar.

It's meant to show icons next to to the Open button. But looks like there isn't one for .exe. Perhaps they should just let it be the main program icon.

Forma de pesquisar no forum - SUGESTÃO

My text is in Portuguese in Brazil.

Eu gostaria de sugerir:

1 - A pesquisa no forum poderia permitir uma pesquisa composta.

Exemplo:   Informo o texto de pesquisa ->>          "welcome" AND  "sandbox"

     click no botão search.

     click no botão search.

A pesquisa me retornaria todos os posts contendo   "welcome".

Eu poderia informar novo texto:  "sandbox"

click no botão search nos resultados.

Obs:   Isso tambem dá pra fazer!

Obrigado.

Bom trabalho a todos.

Sim,

Isso será muito bom caso acatem essas sugestões. Principalmente a segunda, que é continuar uma pesquisa a partir do resultado da primeira.

Em geral as novas funcionalidades estão bem legais.

Parabéns a equipe do novo forum!!!

can't rename shotcuts on start menu

if i go to the "all programs" section of the start menu i usually like to clean that area up, as it gets pretty crowded with shortcuts that i will never need to use (antivirus and other always running programs for example).

i would like to rename folders but every time i try they just go back to the old name after 1 or 2 seconds.

anybody else have this problem?

thanks!

Mouse and keyboard freeze

When I try to wake my computer after I have left it for a while the screen returns but the Logitech S520 mouse and keyboard don't respond despite clicking, moving, pounding on etc.  The system is on default power setting, I've made no chabges to it.  Nothing happens so I have to turn it off and on again.  I don't use Setpoint so can't upgrade the drivers.

Hi,

According to several threads, some customers encountered faction issue after resuming from sleep. We will report the issue to our feedback team.

On the other hand, could you please change CPI settings in BOIS to test the problem? Thank you for your cooperation.

What are the CPI settings  in the BIOS?  What does this mean?  Change them to what (if I ever find them).

Internet Explorer 8 beta (wether or not Win7 version)

Sounds like you have some bad Add-On's running. Search bars, pop-up blockers, any other type of Add-On that "enhance" your browsing experience tend to do the opposite if not used in moderation.

If you upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 you would have carried your Add-On's with you. I suggest disabling all of your Add-On's for a bit and see how things shake out.

I can honestly say that I have never experienced the type of issues that you are describing using any of the IE7/IE8-Beta products which lends me to believe that the product works.

I have been having that same issue with IE7 latley Vista Business 32, however in W7 exploder 8 is a real pain the ____. I just run it in compatability mode and that seems to work. However 7 does seem to jam up alot in exploder. I think I will try Firefox and see whats cracking and get back to you.

Sorry, Piscoe, but it's looking like IE8 will be the IE version that ships with Windows 7.
