This forum is moving the week of 1/27/2009

Microsoft has created a new forums platform (MSDN | TechNet | Expression | Microsoft) with increased performance, stability, and an improved user experience. During the week of 1/27/2009 this forum will move from the Forums 2.x Platform (http://forums.microsoft.com/) to the Forums 3.x Platform. To make sure this is a smooth transition, we want everyone using this forum to have a chance to try out the new forums in advance, and give feedback. We've created a Sandbox forum, where you can create threads and try out functionality, and a suggestions forum where you can give us your feedback. Please take some time to go to the new forums today and let us know what you think.

On the day the forum moves to the new platform, a post will be made letting you know the process has been started, and the forum will be locked to new posts. Once the process is complete, a final post to the forum will be made letting you know the forum has moved.

1.       All posts in the forum will be preserved

2.       Any points you've received for replies will move with you (on a per forum basis)

3.       Any bookmarks to this forum or threads within this forum will redirect to their new location

4.       Your "My Threads" will be preserved on the new platform

The only thing you'll need to do after migration is set Windows Live Alerts for any threads you were tracking.

If you have feedback, let us know in the suggestions forum or contact the forum product planners directly at Andrew.Brenner at Microsoft.com or Jeremy.Kelley at Microsoft.com

Thanks,

Drivers and the Beta.

In general Windows 7 has been pretty smooth. I have installed 64bit 7 as a dual boot on a spare partition  ( fastest fresh install I have experienced ).   At the moment my wireless PCI card is just not seen by the OS, tried installing the drivers and software but it cannot find the card.  Ethernet Controller  (Nvidia 750i chipset) just will not install,"Windows cannot find suitable software".

At the moment I am assuming that this is all due to Windows 7 being in Beta and a lack of proper Updated Drivers.

On a positive note I have been using my Pocket PC as an internet sharing device to my mobile broadband service and as a wireless modem to my home network, also used a mobile broadband USB stick without any problems.

Nothing to do with networking... but was suprised by TV through my TV card using Media Centre rather than the supplied software, actually worked better but have not spent a lot of time with it.

Cheers Guy's!

I am having the exact same issue. I am on a nforce 680i sli system. Please post if you find any suitible drivers for this.

Reply:
Try connecting to Internet via different connection. As soon as you're connected to Internet, Windows will automatically install several drivers. Windows 7 does not come with several hardware drivers, but it has its own way to locate and install compatible hardware drivers via Internet.

Hope this helps.

share your W7 knowledge..

Hi guys,

I know there is a lot of cool things and little shortcuts in this new OS that I just havent had the time to discover for myself, So I would be greatful if we can all join in and add something that you discovered and think not everyone else had a chance to find it out yet. This Idea came about after reading Bradon LeBlanc's blog where he posted a cool site with Hotkey cheat sheet for windows 7 Beta.

Look forward to your contributions!

1.       Todos os posts do fórum serão preservados.

Media Player Library Empty

Many songs had duplicates in Windows Media Player, so I decided to rebuilt the library.  I found an option on the menu to "Restore Media Library", and that seemed appropriate so I used it.  Now it's empty and it won't automatically discover the music in my Music Library.

The media player window says "...the Player is searching for digital media files in the background."  but how long should I wait?  Can I force it to find the music?

Reply:
i see something similar, it's only not saying anything about updating in the background. The WMP process is running at 25% CPU so it's busy, but i would like to force an quicker update.

Anyone know how I might do a repair of Windows Media Player, or maybe find/delete it's database?  Isn't it just a xml file somewhere?

you can find a fix here. Its for xp but just tried it and it fixed the problem in woi7 too

WebDAV Query generates a high number of transaction log files

Hi all,

Sorry for the cross-post... already posted my question in general, but it's actually also related to development.

I have a program that launch a WebDAV query to search for contacts on an Exchange 2007 server. The number of contacts returned for each user's mailbox is quite high (about 4500).
I've noticed that each time the WebDAV query is launched, about 15 transaction log files (Ennxxxx.log) are generated on the Exchange server (each of them 1Mb). If I ask only for 2 properties on the contacts, this number is reduced to about 8.

All log files seem to contain information about the contacts that are returned from the query. Although the log file is binary, I can see some entries like "I P M . C o n t a c t" followed by the name, phone or some other info from the contact. There are hundreds of entries like that in each of the 15 log files, so I guess it generated logs for each of the 4350 contacts returned.

I've made a simple test program where I'm sure that only the query is launched to the server and nothing else when the search is launched (I've especially used Fiddler to see what request are being to the server).

So Exchange really seems to write logs when it build the search results to be returned from the WebDAV query, although no updates are done on the mailbox (at least not be me).

I was wondering if anyone else had this behavior too. Why Exchange is generating so many log files when no updates are done, but only a read-only search?  Is there way (a WebDAV parameter?) to say Exchange not to generate all these files when doing a search?

Thanks for your help,
Alexandre

Windows 7 & Vista dual boot system - Vista restore points deleted?

I have a dual boot Toshiba laptop running 32bits Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 Beta.  These are on separate partitions on the same drive.

When I boot into Windows 7 it seems as if all Vista restore points are deleted.  I do have a full backup of both partitions of course!

Does Windows 7 destroy the restore points of Vista as is the case when dual booting with an earlier version of WIndows?

Reply:

G'Day Bobst;  Always pays to use two HDD's with Vista duel boot, not sure why, had the same drama a while back with Vista / XP.

How are you doing with W7 ?? I've loaded it 9 times in 7 days, my fault, mainly on my HP Lappy, incompatible drivers, all part of the fun.

When you reach design boudaries of a Microsoft Exchange Server ...

The Information Store shuts down and you get this ERROR Message in the Eventlog ...
Event ID : 125
Description : Unable to create the log.  The drive may be Read-Only, out-of diskspace, misconfigured or corrupted. Error -519

Don't you love those cryptic error messages saying something that is not really true?
The drive was NOT Read Only, NOT Full, NOT misconfigured and NOT corrupted

Find out what happend to the Exchange Server

Managing Exchange Certificates

Exchange 2007
Last Thursday, msexchange.org published my first article, about Managing Exchange Certificates. It's the first part of a three-part article. And in this part I talk about the different Exchange components that need certificates to help you provide a secure messaging environment. In the second part I'll cover the namind requirements and I'll finish by covering the different EMS cmdlets that may come in handy when managing certificates.
First part is published here, the other two will be there when ready ;-)

EdgeSync, have a look at the synchronized data

Once you have an Edge server deployed, you can configure EdgeSync to synchronize both recipient and configuration information from your exchange organization to the Edge server role. Configuration information will by default be synced every hour and recipient information every 4 hours, and will alwyas be initiated from any of your hub transport servers located in the Active Directory site that you choose to setup Edge synchronization. The Exchange Edge server will store the information in its own jet database, using ADAM (windows 2003) or LDS (windows 2008).
Using AdsiEdit it is fairly easy to review the information located in ADAM (LDS), as can be seen in the print screens below.

Launch Adam AdsiEdit
Looking at an Edge server role deployed on top of a Windows 2003, you can launch Adam AdsiEdit using Start,All Programs, Adam, Adam Adsi Edit.

Clustering and licensing

If you decide to use Windows Clustering, to deploy Exchange 2007 (RTM or Sp1) in a CCR or a SCC topology, you need to make sure that you have a Enterprise Edition license for every node which will be part of your cluster, even for the passive nodes.

For more information, have a look here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232170%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx

Use the power of the Exchange Management Shell to see which domain controllers and global catalogs are used by your Exchange servers

If you want to see which domain controllers/global catalogs your Exchange Server 2007 (RTM or Sp1) uses to query your Active Directory Forest, you can use the Exchange Management Shell cmdlet Get-ExchangeServer including the parameter Status. If you omit the parameter Status, you will notice that you won't see which domain controllers and global catalogs are used by your Exchange Server.

[PS] C:\>Get-ExchangeServer | fl name,current*
Name    CurrentDomainControllers
CurrentGlobalCatalogs  : {}
CurrentConfigDomainController :

[PS] C:\>Get-ExchangeServer -Status | fl name,current*
Name: DCCurrentDomainControllers      : {DC.nwtraders.com}
CurrentGlobalCatalogs: {DC.nwtraders.com}
CurrentConfigDomainController: DC.nwtraders.com

Pause or stop transport service: what's the difference?

The Microsoft Exchange Transport service is a service available both on the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Hub transport server role, and Edge transport server role. This service is the one responsible for sending mails to their final destinations, and stores those messages and items belonging to the transport dumpster in an Extensible Storage Engine database by default called Mail.que. When you stop the Microsoft Exchange Transport service, Exchange will no longer be able to accept new messages, and Exchange will not continue to deliver existing queued messages. By pausing the Microsoft Exchange Transport service on the other hand, Exchange will allow existing messages to be delivered, but will stop accepting new messages.

Want to see which mailbox databases are mounted and dismounted?

You can easily see if a mailbox database is mounted, when you open your Exchange Management Console, select Server Configuration, and click on your Mailbox server. But, by using the power of the Exchange Management Shell, you just need to execute one line to get a list of all mailbox databases, and if they are mounted or not. The following line will present you with a list of mailbox databases, sorted by servername first, and then by storage group name, and if the mailbox database is mounted or not.

Remote streaming backup win2003 Exchange 2007 Sp1

In Exchange 2007 there are quite a few well-known and widely used features that have been either discontinued (like OMA), or have been de-emphasized (like public folders) which means that the feature may not be supported in the next release of Exchange. Another de-emphasized feature is streaming backups. With the release of Service Pack 1, it became clear that it is no longer possible to take a remote streaming backup of an Exchange 2007 database running on Windows 2003 nor Windows 2008. It is however possible to re-enable the support of taking a remote streaming backup, if your Exchange Server 2007 Sp1 is deployed in a Windows 2003 OS by adding the following registry key and setting its value to 1:

Location = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParameterSystem

DWORD (32-bit) Value= Enable Remote Streaming Backup

Value = 1

No need to restart any service, remote streaming backup is enabled, and will work. If you have deployed your Exchange 2007 environment on top of a Windows 2008 server, you won't be able to take a remote streaming backup, and Windows Backup 2008 doesn't include a streaming Exchange agent anymore. Therefore you will need to turn to VSS tools, like SCDPM 2007, or you could deploy a local streaming backup agent on your Exchange server and take a local streaming backup.

Microsoft Exchange Dashboard Share-it (fix for Exchange Server 2003)

A few customers have pointed out that they are not able to get all of the rich information in their Microsoft Exchange Dashboard Share-it. Here is what to do to ensure the Exchange stats show up in the Dashboard. This only appears to be an issue with 2003. Here is the fairly simple workaround from Microsoft.

This is the page where you can find the complete message from Microsoft

If you just want to implement the fix, you can follow these directions.

SYMPTOMS
When you start a Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation-based monitoring program on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer, you may not see the results for the Exchange Server 2003 performance counters.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) uses AutoDiscovery/AutoPurge (ADAP) to build its internal performance counter table. If the Exchange Server 2003 services are not started when the WMI ADAP process is started, the performance counters are not transferred to WMI.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, you can run the wmiadap.exe /f command to force the transfer of all the performance libraries. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

2. At the command prompt, type wmiadap.exe /f, and then press ENTER.

3. Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the command prompt.

4. Start WMI.

I have a server at home which is exchange 2007 sp 1 configured with CAS role.I have already checked the autodiscovery, exchange active sync and everything is working fine.SAN ucc certificate is bought from go daddy and connectivity is checked using https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/

For some reason when I log on to OWA from inside or outside using internt explorer. I can't see the full features of OWA. Even though when I log in using basic authentication, I do not tick OWA light. I can't see any public folders, no rules or alerts etc.

Hi,

Is this for one user or for every user ?
Did you install an update and has it worked before ?

Please check the OWA on the CAS server also, you can get the properties of it. On the tab segmentation check the Premium client is enabled.

Johan

Dell Latitude D610

I just installed Win 7 on my Latitude D610 and it actually went smoother than my Inspiron 9300 which I did earlier this week. The only incompatible hardware so far was a non-Dell spec, generic Atheros based Wireless N card. I replaced with a Gigabyte "G" card and it was recognized right away.

As with the I9300 install, Win 7 works very well with an older spec, mobile machine. :)

User Interface While Running Performance Assessment

The UI just messes up. It reverts to the basic theme and it has all kinds of strange artifacts when running the Performance Assessment. Is there a reason?

And this happened on my VPC and my physical computer; I do not believe it is graphics card related.

Logically, you stress the system, and it performs poorly under "too much' stress. I would say something is showing a need for better hardware or drivers. Look, for example, at this run down in Vista, of the reasons Aero will balk.

Given that it happens in VPC and directly on the PC as you indicated, I would conclude that it is definitely graphics card or graphics driver related.

What are you CPU, RAM, and graphics specs?

Mine goes to windows basic theme (taskbar, etc) I assume that's normal.

But there's no artifacts or anything.

So does mine for a couple of the tests and then switches back by the end.

The VPC emulates a S3 trio with 4 mb of memory. My main PC has an ATi HD 2400 card. Obviously not related; a more widespread issue.

Some visual anomalies are expected to happen in such tests, and do happen on a regular basis, even on the latest of hardware.  It performed this way in Vista and in 7 it is no different.  As long as it returns to normal at the end you have nothing to worry about.
