Make the Task Manager always available even when a process pegs the cpu

Hit the key combination <ctrl><shift><esc>. That will bring up Task Manager regardless of what else is going one.
Once you have Task Manger up and running, go to Options and select Hide when minimized. That way, TM will appear in the tray by the clock when minimized, but it won't take up screen real-estate.
However, as Willy Denoyette suggested, Process Explorer is a better tool to use when investigating rouge programs.

One real annoyance I have is that you can get processes pegging the CPU to 100% or going crazy on the disk and you can't get the task manager to come up so you can kill them. I want a way to have the task manager always available and to be given priority so it can launch and kill other processes. We should always be able to quickly and easily get to the task manager and be able to kill any process. Otherwise the only solution is hold the power button which isn't good.
Hi
If you want task manager always to open when you need it, install at least dual core CPU.
When something hangs on single core CPU even it runs on lowest priority calling task manager may be imposible within single human life :)
On multicore system things looks different :)

I know about process explorer, but it won't launch in these circumstances, so it can't help. I do hit ctl-shift-esc but can't always get task manager launched. I have a dual core and it doesn't always get started. This was the case in Vista and seems the case in Win 7.

You should be able to find out what type of card it is by going to the nvidia site and having it try to update the drivers for you. If it is a nVidia card then the 2nd option to have it scan your system and find drivers should help at least get a model or updated drivers for your system.

This kind of behavior is the leading cause of people finally blameing Microsoft for their problems. UAC or no.... Don't care. Just tell me how to propogate down and override inheritances.
But, to my question: If I am supposedly some sort of admin, which I should be since I have one machine, no network, and if there is no admin, who the heck is running this thing? It isn't someone who doesn't let malware, rootkits, viruses (there are too many names for these things these days... are "worms" dead? Trojans seem to be the kick now) on my machine because your absurdly restrictive and wayyyyyyyy over-implemented security system only gives me grief, not the little 'nasties' that Norton catches.
So, I want to move a top level directory from one drive to another. Sorry, can't do that. You have to take ownership of it first (OK, not a problem), then add yourself as a user with whatever rights (I just put "all" since I own it and I will be the one cleaning up the problems, not MS), then I choose "all subdirectories and files" and something like "implement to lower".
But no, it doesn't implement to lower directories. If they have any inherited rights at all, even if there are no other listed users (we haven't even gotten to groups yet), I can't find out how to strip all the inhereted rights off unless I do them one directory at a time. Oh, directory, yes... It changes the files, not the directories. I'm lost now.
Enough bashing of the system, just tell me how to be an 'admin' on my own "I paid for the hardware, the software and you are not responsible for a @#$ thing if I #@# it up" machine. Is there some arcane icacls cmd junk I have to run without knowing what in the world I'm doing? I'd rather run linux - at least it has really good man pages.
Seriously guys (gals?), if you are going to pretend this is a workstation on a server, make the user accounts and groups like your own windows server. I ran that for years as an admin with no problem. Before that, novell admin. Before that (I'm ashamed to say) Win 3.11/3.12 (remember NetBEUI?).
Someone give me a script or a book or something. I'm going to kill something if I have to do this by hand again (probably a tree, I'm a non-violent type).
Help!

To your question on "If I am supposedly some sort of admin, which I should be since I have one machine, no network, and if there is no admin, who the heck is running this thing? It isn't someone who doesn't let malware, rootkits, viruses (there are too many names for these things these days... are "worms" dead? Trojans seem to be the kick now) on my machine because your absurdly restrictive and wayyyyyyyy over-implemented security system only gives me grief, not the little 'nasties' that Norton catches.", I have to disagree with you...
1st: Most computers are now connected to a network, and threats are spread through the network. By default when you install Windos 7, you are the administrator of the system, just that some actions will need UAC elevation, before you can execute them. You might be thinking that, you are the only admin, and you are not connected to any network, then feel free to turn off UAC by opening "MSCONFIG", and select the Tools tab. You can disable UAC from there.
Regarding "So, I want to move a top level directory from one drive to another. Sorry, can't do that. You have to take ownership of it first (OK, not a problem), then add yourself as a user with whatever rights (I just put "all" since I own it and I will be the one cleaning up the problems, not MS), then I choose "all subdirectories and files" and something like "implement to lower".", which particular directory are you trying to take ownership?
If you are referring to the Windows directory, what's your reasoning on taking ownership? If it's not the Windows directory, which directory are you referring to? :)

First time, I installed, updated, installed live essentials. I tried to resolve it by booting into safe mode and tried to recover. I did not have a recovery point and was not able to uninstall Live Essentials. I wiped the system and did a clean install for the second time, I installed Live Essentials before any updates. I guess I was hoping to see if it might make a difference. Same result immediately after finishing the install and rebooting. The only option was to turn the machine off. I started to boot it and then decided to shut it right back down. So, almost by accident, I received a different screen with two boot options because "windows failed to startup" (they were normal and repair, I think). I ran repair to see what would happen. It scanned for hardware and appliction changes then I was able to boot normally into 7. After the repair, I noticed there were only three Live applications left installed: Live Mail, Live Messenger and Live Call. (Both times I installed essentials, I installed everything.) I then loaded mail and was able to configure it with my account info. The farthest I had gotten. I then tried to launch Live Call and it crashed. Reboot and it freezes after five-ten seconds. I'm on install number three and plan to skip Live Essentials this time.

Unable to start Live Sync on Win 7
Live Sync is running happily on my 32-bit Vista machine. But it unfortunately doesn't have anyone to sync with since the Win7 machine won't cooperate.
I have done an uninstall/re-install already. I'm wondering if it is compatible with Win7?
Anybody have any suggestions?
Reply:
Looks like there's not a whole lot of interest in Live Sync on these forums. I got it going again by uninstalling, then deleting the Windows Live Sync folder from C:/User/MyUsername/AppData/Local/Microsoft/
After re-install, seems to be working for now.

Outbound SMTP connector
Hello!!!
I am not sure if this Forum is right place for my problem.
I have an Exchange 2003 mailing system with one Internet - Outbound SMTP connector. Now we have a new Exchange server in same organization but in different location. Can I create a new Internet - Outbound SMTP connector and rout the mails from the new Exch server to another smarthost.
Regards,
Shankar.
Reply:
Yes you can, but you need to look at address space and cost on each copnnector.
Which connector Exchange select to use is determined by address space, if there is same address space on multiple connectors Exchange will use the one with lowest cost.
You probably have an address space of '*' on the current SMTP connector, so if you create a new SMTP connector with address space of '*' and the same cost, users on server A will use the connector with source server A and users on server B will use the connector with source server B.
