Windows Fax & Scan - Outdated UI

Windows Fax & Scan - Outdated UI

Not that I use it much, but Windows Fax & Scan needs an update:

  1. The toolbar is the old royal blue from Vista.
  2. The split frames look like something from Windows 2000
  3. The sortable column headers look like Vista rather than what you see in Winows 7 Windows Explorer.
  4. Having the fax and scan buttons in the lower left corner just seems odd...they should be up in the Tool Bar or something.

Good points.

May I suggest you use the Send Feedback facility?  That way you can be sure someone at Microsoft will read it.

Various installations hanging

I'm trying to install the software for a few odd accessories and everything keeps hanging on me:
*  Logitech Harmony Remote Control software
*  Linksys router configuration software
*  ATI - Catalyst Control Center software

For some reason, when i launch any of these, i get the spinning cursor and then my PC locks up.   Is anyone else having trouble loading these apps?   I've tried downloading the latest versions from their websites, and even tried installing them in Vista Compatability mode but still nada.

Reply:
Open windows event viewr and check why your applications crash

To solve your issue you may need to run them in compatibility mode.

To tun in compatibility mode:
1. right click file you run setup from
2.From popup menu select properties
3. Click on compatibility tab
4. set mode you think is most suitable
5. click ok button when done
6. run file you just set in compatibility mode

And if you have problem you want help for, your thread type must be question

Color calibration -- support colorimeter, LUT, DDC?

Having color calibration built-in is a good idea. Why not go all the way and support colorimeters, LUT, and monitor DDC?

A quick way to add this is to buy one of the small companies that makes monitor calibration software. It should be relatively cheap and alot more useful than trying to buy yahoo.

IE 8 High CPU Usage After Sending a Link by E-Mail

I found that IE8 consistently consumes 50% of my CPU when I compose an E-Mail using the Send Link by E-Mail feature.  My CPU remains at 50% even after the message is sent, until I restart IE.  I am using Outlook 2007.

Reply:
Task manager shows me that SearchFilterHost.exe is the process consuming all the CPU.  I'm not sure what it's spending all of it's time doing after I send an email, but restarting IE causes the CPU usage to drop down to near zero.

BSE Symantec Ghost 14.0

 Hello everyone:

Blue Screen Error with Symantec Ghost 14.0 during/completing the software installation process and then again subsequently upon run of my first immediate backup attempt - Win - 7 still has not fully started back up; have been waiting the entire time writing this message to see the Win-7 Desktop re-appear - no feedback on the screen - (like please wait).  Hard Drive LED is flashing almost solid ON....not sure what Win-7 is doing if anything at this moment (have not seen desktop re-appear, probably almost fifteen minutes now - (only "Starting Windows Screen" is displaying).

Little Windows 7 Ultimate Beta feedback to us the Win-7 user.  After the Blue Screen restart. It did seem data was attempted to be gathered, during the viewed BSE time period.

Feedback functioning via the "Send Feedback" from Win-7 still appears not to provide for any confirmation that feedback was gathered / saved or sent.  So I have been posting these messages on TechNet.

     Bye for this message,

                                        Jim

are you restoring the entire disk? Meaning the 200meg partition win7 creates? Do you also have a ghost partition on the drive?

It does however sound like a driver issue. Have you tried to F8 and boot into safe mode?

Hello Tactik:

I was attempting to install Norton Symantec Ghost 14, because I wanted a backup image of my HD, before re-partitioning the drive... (safety precaution only).  I went ahead abandoned the idea of installing Ghost 14 under Windows 7, Ultimate, Build 7000 - Beta version.

Thank you very much for your inquiry, I really am just trying out different programs under Win-7, to see how Win-7 handles (or vise-versa), these programs....(expected; many of the software application providers, are not up to the Win-7 co-operational task, with their software quite possibly)....It does seem foolish of me I know, to install non Win-7 tested applications under Win-7 OS.  I am just providing feedback on which software developers are not up the Win-7 level at this time; (quite possibly) – we probably could guess without installing any software not expressly stated as; tested under Win-7 OS.

   Thanks again!

                            Bye for now,

MCT Training CTT TTT resources

I recently posted a question looking for resources to help me pass the MCT requirements.  I found something that I should really have thought of before, youtube! I must admit I have found these more interesting than the official resources from Comptia although these should always be considered suplimentory too the official reading.

Excel 2007 crashes repeatedly on saving a file

Microsoft Excel 2007 crashes when I change a document and then try to save it.  Occurs repeatedly in Windows 7 Beta Build 7000.

Never had a problem with Excel in Vista 64 bit.

I'm having the same problem with excel.  I had no issues under Vista x64 or x86.  The problem is somewhat intermittant as it doesn't happen with every save, just most of them.  It happens most frequently when saving by clicking on the save icon (disk).  I have observed an exceptionally slow "update bar (green)" in My Computer as excel is attempting to write the file.  Excel crashes and cannot be shut down, forcing a hard reboot.

Windows Defender popup to turn on

When I boot my computer for the first time, I see a brief pop up in the task bar to turn on Windows Defender. It is turned on. Anyone else seeing this? Using 64 bit btw.

Same problem here with very similar system specs.  After booting there's a brief warning that Defender is not turned on.  By the time I try to do something about it Defender has usually started.  It also triggers an error state on Windows Home Server, and thus all my machines in the house know I didn't have Defender running for about 30 seconds.

It's saying "standard VGA driver" because you do not have any proper NVIDIA drivers installed, which is also the reason why we suggested to install those right away. There's also no need to scream when you're feeling misunderstood, just turn off your brain like usual and follow the instructions.

This is how it worked for me. I had the same problem. I have an HP laptop and Win 7 didn't recognize the video card so it couldn't get the drivers. I went to nVidia, but those drivers didn't work either. So, I googled the problem and found a solution that works perfectly! Using a program called Driver Max, just export a working video driver from XP and import it (with Driver Max installed on Win 7) on Win 7 and viola! It works like a charm! You can use this same method for all the other drivers that Win 7 could not find too. Hope this helps. Good luck.

If NVidia have Vista Drivers for your video card, then download the vista32 version, if you are using windows 7 32 bit version, if there is not a vista 32 driver then download the xp 32 bit version. Both these files can be run in compatibility mode and Frop previously explained how.

I'm sorry but I don't think you can do windows 7 public beta. For the simple fact that the 420mx did't and won't have directx10 support. Hence the blue screen on the WEI. Secondly any time you have to emulate another lower version of windows to install a driver is gonna be problematic at best. I doubt even on release will windows have a working proper driver for Windows 7 for your hardware because it just doesn't have the umph to do directx10 at all. Yes you will be able to force the driver to work but now you know the results from trying to emulate another driver structure in Windows 7. It's buggy at best. If you have agp I would suggest an ATI 3850 to update your system to an acceptable level and really enjoy some graphic programs with that. The 420mx isn't enough plain and simple. On that note since thats the last known agp version of a new card I would go with that. The one from sapphire is actually an awesome card for the age of the agp buss...

Searching: How do you search for content but NOT filename?

I could not figure out how to solve this very simple task: I want to search through several folders (all files) and want to see ONLY the files that CONTAIN a certain string. I am NOT interested whether files happen to use this string in their NAME - they must contain the string in their CONTENT, otherwise I do not want them in the search result.

This is about as basic as it gets when it comes to searching and it was intuitive to do in Windows XP. Does anybody know how this works in Windows 7? Such a common function should be easily accessible, for me it is not obvious.

My AT&T 5520 Broadband Mini card worked well in my Dell M1530 under Vista but has errors with the drivers under Win 7.  Re-installing the drivers through the offered troubleshooter routine was unsuccessful.  The Novatel Manufacture number is JW494.

dx8vb.dll

When I put it in a system in windows7 and registered registry, I was usable smoothly.
Will you put dx8vb.dll from a beginning?

Kodak AIO-3 crashing applications when trying to print

I have installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions of W7 beta, and in each instance, when I try to go and print something from any software (IE, FF..etc) it crashes the program when attempting to print.  I have AIO-3 driver that was downloaded with the Beta install/Windows Update.

In the last instance, it is a clean, fresh install of x64 beta.  I literally finished the install, did the windows update, and then tried to print, and it crashed my IE.

I too am having the same issue with the Kodak AiO app. Scanning a document or photo works fine. Any time you attempt to print (from any app) windows explorer crashes. Have tried running the app in compatibility mode for Vista (which on another machine works fine), still the same issue.

I have checked for all updates and also have the current ATI Radeon drivers.

Details from the AiO log show some type of memory curruption.

Alamioas - Your test on the clean install, was it tested without the printer attached and attempting to print to XPS from IE, FF and/or Notepad?

I am going to try and dig into it a little deeper this evening. I will let you know if I find anything out.

unfortunately no.  Nothing prints anymore and all apps crash.  I upgraded from Vista to Win7....and was having trouble with print functions right after installing Vista SP1, but nowhere to the extent of apps crashing like on Win 7.   Under Vista SP1 I couldn't set the printer to be default and it would crash Excel, but not Word or Outlook.

Given that I had some legacy issues, should I do a clean install of Win 7?   Is there anyone out there with a Kodak printer that is working properly on Win 7?

Win 7 wont dual boot with XP

I installed Win7 to a separate disk to the one that had XP (sp2) on. But it did not create any dual boot options (which I had expected it to). Obviously I cannot get into XP now. How do I fix this?

My disk configuration

Pre Win 7 was:

SATA Disk1 with XP Sp2 on. (320gb)
SATA Disk2 (320gb)
IDE Secondary - DVD Drive.

For Win7 is:-

IDE Primary - new 80gb drive for Win 7 (Became the C drive)
SATA Disk1 (Drive D)
SATA Disk2 (Drive E)
IDE Secondary - DVD Drive.

I've tried EasyBCD (and created a boot option for XP) but it hasn't fixed the issue. I get something on the screen when trying to boot to XP (probably something missing message) and then it reboots.

Thanks for any help.

Can you try switching your IDE Primary and Secondary and then updating your EasyBCD settings?

XP has to be on C: all the time. Changing it to a different partition after installation could cause it to fail to boot.

What is the error you receive?  That alone could provide all of the required detail needed to fix your issue.

The first order of troubleshooting is to remove the 80GB IDE disk to see if XP boots while it is in its original configuration.   Post your findings.

Unfortunately the PC reboots immediately the error message is display - there  is no time to read what it says.

I have now removed the IDE drive (by unplugging the drive cable) and XP boots as it always did.

If I put the Win 7 drive on to the secondary controller will that make my SATA primary drive with XP on it the C drive again?

If so, how do I boot to Win 7 again (assuming the secondary IDE controller will allocate a different drive letter) ?

Seems strange - I have a single 160G IDE drive which I have partitioned into 2 x 73.2G partitions with XP PRO SP3 on one and 7 on the other.  I have a boot menu offering Windows 7 as one option and "An older windows version" as the second option.  Sure enough the second option then takes me to XP PRO.  Again, go into the BIOS settings and slow down the startup so you are able to read the error message then report it on here.

Okay.  When your PC boots (or tries to boot) into Windows 7, start hitting the F8 key so that you can see the boot option.   One of the available options will be Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Now, when the crash happens, you will have an opportunity to read the error message.

Hi

If windows7 install did not created XP entry in boot menu inder Old installations or something like that, then xp is still fumctional.

You can boot in xp by setting HDD on that it resides as first boot drive in MB BIOS boot options.

For example to boot in XP set in BIOS SATA DISK1 as first boot device, to boot to windows7 set in BIOS IDE Primary as first boot device

Easybcd should lork but you probably are not set it correctly

If you sett options on easybcd correctly you will be able to boot without need to switch boot order in BIOS boot options

Ok but this is not possible!

If you can set just one HDD then you must have option to arrange HDDs order.

Also most systems offer you way to open boot devices menu usually by pressing F8 while on POST (power on self test screen)

What is your MB?

Why would switching the IDE primary (80gb drive) and secondary (DVD-ROM) make any difference?

As to "XP has to be on C: all the time" -- this is not correct -- I've encountered several annoying instances where XP happily installed itself to another drive letter because it saw that "drive C:" was already in use.

If I put the Win 7 drive on to the secondary controller will that make my SATA primary drive with XP on it the C drive again?

If so, how do I boot to Win 7 again (assuming the secondary IDE controller will allocate a different drive letter) ?

Thanks

DK

You couldn't boot to Win7, which is why swapping drives on the IDE controllers is not a viable solution, or even a usable diagnostic tool.
