Hi,

Taskbar icons not always displaying one next to another.
Mine are sometimes displaying correctly one next to the other, sometimes there is "space" between theme and not with a precise pattern, I can have "icon-space-icon-icon-big space and so on...
I'm currently running the "combine when full" mode with the good old quick lauch bar.

The first button comes always at the same distance from the quick launch, a bit too far from it I believe, while the other buttons seam to do what they want in terms of spacing.

Reply:
Hello Harry,
Can you please right click on the taskbar and see what option you have set for the Taskbar Buttons. It seems that you may have the Taskbar buttons set to Combine when Taskbar is full or Never Combine. Setting this to Always Combine, Hide Labels should fix this for you.

Anyway, I set it to "always combine" and I believe the problem is still there, I've put up another screenshot "clipboard03" at the link above.
I removed the quick launch bar to see if something would change and also tried "never combine" but the problem persist.

MacBook Pro (Early 2008) Spotty Connection
I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) and the wi-fi works. However, it will randomly lose connection and re-connect. I have the latest Broadcom BCM43XX
802.11n driver installed from the Boot Camp driver CD. Has anyone found a fix, or is stuck in a similar solution yet?

What About The Mobile Users?
Reply:
as far as I have seen this graphic adapter has only 32MB of RAM. The decision if a manufacturer is delivering drivers or not, is not the responsibility of Microsoft. Microsoft is not developing drivers, they only sell their own software. The minimum system requirements to running aero are 128 MB and were specified already with Windows Vista. So it is not only a driver issue, it is also a hardware limitation at all.

A likely cause of this is a device installation that is failing to return. You can provide a bit more detail to help pinpoint the issue:
1) What percentage is the "completing installation" at?
2) Analyze and/or post relavent sections of setup log files. Try the following:
- Press SHIFT-F10 during the "completing installation" screen, a command prompt opens
- Navigate and review the following log files (start at the end):
- \windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log (shows current device installations)
- \windows\panther\unattendgc\setupact.log (shows the current state of Setup)
If you're not getting anywhere with looking at the log files, post some of the suspicious/relevant information and it might shed more light on the issue.

Reply:
As suspected, it looks as though the culprit is Device Installation that occurs at this point. It's possible that a device hang causes Setup to loop and stall progress. The logs indicate that we are "specializing" the computer and making it hardware dependend. That's what SYSPRP logs are alluding to.
This is where the setupapi.dev.log would be useful. Please add the *last 100 lines* of that log file (location in first reply). Do not attach the entire log file.
Stephen Lodwick [MSFT]
------------------------------------
Reply:
The attached setupapi.dev.log file does not appear to be from the same installation that is hanging. Review the following:
setupapi.dev.log:
<<< Section end 2009/01/02 16:57:10.091
<<< [Exit status: SUCCESS]
setupact.log:
2009-01-09 23:54:54, Info SYSPRP Status: Active
2009-01-09 23:54:54, Info SYSPRP Status: Total = 267, Complete = 143, Progress = 53% (53%)
The two timestamps appear that they do not come from the same installation. Can you check to make sure you picked up the setupapi.dev.log from the installation \Windows directory?

Hi,
Could you please capture a screenshot? We need more information to troubleshoot the problem.
Thanks.

ODBC data sources visibility
Some for my home network, some for my work network, and some for each client I come to.
So in the end I have on average some 30 ODBC data sources, but would have more if I didn't delete old ones from business clients that I don't expect to return to soon.
So I'd like to see some functionality in Win7 that would allo me to "link" the ODBC data sources to the networks that I connect to. This way the applications that use those sources would only display data sources that would be relevant in a particular network.
Of course, some data sources (servers) are always accessible, like servers installed on my computer or in a VM on my computer.
Is this a sensible suggestion?

Since i've installed this i have access to full surround sound and no static hiss, dropping volumes any more.
To get surround sound/more than 2 speakers, go into the creative speaker settings and set the speakers there before going to Devices sounds to set the speakers.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Installation - No Problem
Tried to update - No signal to monitor - system froze.
Reboot - tried to update same again
Another reboot - problem repeated
Reboot to safe mode with network - updates successfully completed
Reboot to normal mode - works perfectly
Just a little wobble bit something youmay need to be aware of & how to cure it.

Was previously using AVG 8, then decided to try KAV just to test things out.
Install went thru fine, however the anti-hacker tool as they call it (the firewall) was extremely buggy. Started up utorrent and after a minute or two, all network activity stopped.
I tried to uninstall but it hanged for 5 minutes requiring a manual reboot. I was finally able to uninstall and just went back to AVG.

I was having this problem all morning today... and then the Windows Update issue resolved itself. Unfortunately, the application installers were still crashing, so I ended up doing a system restore, and that fixed it.
Thanks this got by system back to a usable point.

Same problem here on a clean install of 64 bit. Just seemed to start happening today though. I managed to get it to open by right clicking on the Windows Update link in the start menu and Running it as administrator. That seemed to make it work like normal again even after going back into it without running it as administrator.
This did not work for me on a clean install of 32 bit.

I tried to Run as administrator, same thing.
I ran a chkdsk and tried, same thing.
I disable System Restore after I install Windows so I can't try that.
I'm running a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit on the following hardware:
Dell XPS720HC
Intel E6850 dual-core @ 3.0GHz
4GB RAM
Nvidia 8800GT PCI-e with 512MB
I recently installed the 181.80 drivers from the Nvidia site after I began having driver issues with the ones originally installed from Windows Update.
BTW, when Explorer does restart and I get my toolbar back I notice a new icon which says AVG is running a scan. That icon is not there normally and I did not set AVG to begin scanning.
[Edit] Right after I made this port I was able to start Windows Update like normal so I rebooted by PC and tried and it went back to failing. I thought maybe AVG might have something to do with it so I disabled the Resident Shield and tried and it continued to fail.
Here is the information from the Event Viewer just in case it might help someone figure this out:

Like others, the issue came back for me after the initial registry changes. However, using the link above I was able to stop the issue again and hopefully in a more permanent way. We shall see in a day or two. :)

Win7, it's a go!
It installed slowly, but once up, there have been no glitches. The only issue is with games that have Punkbuster monitoring them. They do not support betas, so the online games are out for now.
The one thing I have noticed, between Vista and Win7 is it loads much faster, hooks up to the internet faster, and so far, it is a go for manufacture.
I hope there are no hidden issues I haven't found, but so far, it's a go....

That being said, I think it's MUCH better than Vista but time will tell whether it can hold a candle to XP.

Windows theme turns off after 10min.
I have tried everything from adjusting power settings (custom through advanced and just selected performance) Appearance options, adding a screen saver etc. Did I miss an option or is this a bug?

Virtual PC guest OS window goes black?
However, the XP window keeps turning black (in the client area -- this is not the Aero turning black problem caused by Mesh). If I move or resize the window, the XP window becomes visible again for a few moments, or until I switch to where it's no longer the active window (on my Win7 desktop).
This only happens when using Aero. I set VirtualPC to disable desktop composition, and it fixed it.

Used to have a dual boot Vista/XP setup.
Formatted the XP partition and installed Windows 7.
On reboot my options where Vista and 'earlier version of windows' (which no longer worked).
From inside Vista, removed the 'earlier version of windows' option, and reformatted the 2nd partition again.
Re-installed Windows 7 and ran the repair utility when done.
Now if I boot with no DVD in the drive the system boots straight to Vista.
If I boot with the Windows 7 DVD in the drive, the system gives me the choice between 7 and Vista.
No way to boot to 7 w/o the DVD in the drive.

Boot w/o DVD uses the boot data from the C: drive (disk 3, partion 1)
I added an entry for windows 7 using BCDEDIT, but it just gives an error when Windows 7 tries to load.

Now my laptop has a 250GB SATA drive & its a Dell E1505 Core Duo with 2GB of DDR2, so I partitioned right down the middle, I installed XP on it first, thats the key, then after you finish with all the updates & install SP3, then boot off of the Windows 7 Beta 1 disk & perform the same steps as I metioned earlier in this post, then viola, you have a dual boot on a laptop, Windows 7 can be portable after all.

The issue I am having is that booting from the install DVD, Windows 7 is seeing one drive as my 'boot' drive while booting normally Vista is seeing a different drive as the boot drive. BCDEDIT boooted to Vista shows it is using the boot loader on C:. Booting from DVD BCDEDIT is showing that it is using the boot loader on I:.
The only way I was able to 'fix' this was to manually create a valid boot entry for Windows 7 using BCDEDIT while booted to Vista without the Win 7 DVD in the drive.

Rosewill -Ralink picked up
HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card, Vista drivers worked awesome. Really pleased with that one.
Vista drivers for MSI k9A2 mobo worked fine, save for the ethernet , but from what I've read this isn't uncommon.
Install ATI's Windows 7 beta for 4850s, dis[aly driver works fine, the CCC is nada.
And the major point of my post, I am using a Rosewill G300EX wireless adapter. I read the release notes, and it did seem to say that wireless would be a challenge. I installed the disk driver, and the latest from the rosewill website, they application seems to install fine, like on Vista and XP, it just wouldn't activate. Fair enough, I was o.k. with it, since I had read fair warning.
BUT, about 6 re-botts, and low and behold, the wireless signal popped up and connected!!! lol. Maybe my gift for taking it easy? IDK. But it was pretty weird.
I'm liking 7 though.
