DVD boot/install failure solved

DVD boot/install failure solved

I had two problems installing Win 7, original threads here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/74c74416-0641-4aa2-baf6-cf2da817e6ec

and here

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/1a6fc21d-e7bd-4d86-a78c-9478f3f831dc

I finally discovered what the problem was, it  caused both issues even though they seemed unrelated. The PC I am installing Win 7 on has an Intel motherboard. There is a CD that comes with the MB that I had forgotten about. It has IDE drivers on it. XP installed fine without those drivers but Win 7 would not and would not tell me what was wrong. I finally extracted the ISO file to a virtual drive on my HD and mounted it. Then when I started Win 7 install, it actually told me it could not install on either of my HD's because an IDE driver was required. That caused some head scratching for a while, why does Win 7 need IDE drivers if XP doesnt. Anyway I finally remembered the setup CD that comes with the MB and found IDE drivers on it. I browsed to the drivers from the Win 7 install and let Win 7 install them. That wasnt the end of it though. Win 7 installed the drivers and went along until it had to reboot at which point instead of continuing the install it blue screened. I figured the reboot lost track of the virtual drive. Now that I knew the IDE drivers were the problem I installed them on XP and then tried to boot from the DVD. It still wouldn't boot, so I opened the folder and double clicked the setup.exe. That started setup and got me to the screen that said I couldnt install Win 7 on either HD because drivers were needed. I browsed to the IDE drivers again and let Win 7 install them. After all that the install completed, I have been able to shutdown the computer and boot again into Win 7. I am writing this from Win 7.

Once you get it installed, its a nice looking OS. Now that I have it running I have some other issues but I need to do some research and if needed I'll start another thread for them.

Key Scrambler

Key Scrambler is working in Win 7.  I installed it about three hours ago and it's  working fine. Win 7 ROCKS.

TV Tuner

First Post, hello all, I have a Hauppauge! 950Q
tv tuner and have not been able to get it to work with windows 7 Beta , I am using the 64 bit OS, It did work fine in Vista 32 bit with Media Center

Reply:

I'll keep an eye on responses here. There have been many reports of issues with Hauppauge cards and 64bit...especially with memory above 4gb. You can try keeping below 4gb to see if that is the problem and repost. I had to go through half a dozen drivers to find one to work in Vista. I was hoping this would be fixed by the time Windows 7 rolls around. Hauppauge is very slow to deal with this issue.

Best of luck.

I have 4gb , and will try 2gb.  a  reason I am  trying 64 bit is  to use all 4gb of Ram.

Hello , just installed the 64bit beta and I also have a Hauppague card , the PVR-150 , it worked flawlessly in Vista Ulti 32bit but it just seems to have some sort of connection problem in 64bit Windows 7.

It will play VERY well for a bit but then gets real choppy and I see like Digi-corruption on the picture and it will start to lag/chop a bit and back to normal again.

System specs:

ASUS Crosshair 1207
AMD64 AM2+ 9850BE
4 Gig 1066 OCZ Ram
Hauppauage PVR-150
4 SATA II Drives
ASUS Xonar Sound
XFX GTX260BE - Nvidia 181.22 Beta drivers

thanks

EDIT::::::::

After a few reboots it seems to play a bit better but still suffers from some kind of interference or lag , this reminds me of when I first installed Vista , when i had the AERO interface turned on I got this kind of stuff , I wonder if this might be a driver issue?

Hi Steve219:
I can't provide a sure-fire solution for you but wanted to let you know that I am using the Hauppauge HVR1800 in both  32-bit and 64-bit Win7 Beta PCs.  To get the cable QAM to work I had to use the Fiji registry change file that Hauppauge support sent me to use with Vista.  In the email they sent with the cable QAM registry fix they mentioned I should be sure to install their "fix" for PCs with >4 GB of RAM.  I did that with the Vista installation but didn't with Win7.  In both cases I only had 3 GBs of RAM installed.  The built-in drivers from Win7 seem to be working fine in both 32 & 64-bit for me.  I am enjoying the AFC play-off game in HD right now......using just basic cable with no rented Comcast HD box.  I love it!!!!!

well after trying to update DirectX TWICE and resetting back 2 system restores after that failed I have come to the realization that it is IN FACT my sound card.

After rolling back all was well but I only had sound through my back 2 speakerswhen TV was on and it was crackly , so I reinstalled my sound card driver and BAM!! Back to ____ Live TV city!!!

Seeing as how ASUS has not updated their sound drivers since last sept and has NEVER had a WHQL driver I am going to consider myself lucky that I have sound at all , everything else works like a charm , WMP music sounds awesome and DVDs play like champs in 5.1 glory , so I guess its the driver waiting game again for me.

Desktop Toolbars / Deskbands ?

Hi all, anyone know how to bring back deskbands in Win7? I've tried dragging a folder to the edge of the screen to make it, but it doesn't do anything.

I relied on this feature heavily; i would have my taskbar at the top of the screen, and then have the address bar docked to the bottom of the screen and always-on-top, so i could rapidly type in and go to ANY website/folder/protocol (eg: mailto:).

I would REALLY like to get this back, but can't figure out how to turn it on in 7. I could put the address bar in the taskbar, but
a) it looks bad on the double-height taskbar, and
b) i still regularly have my taskbar nearly full, and can't afford the space on the taskbar

Thanks in advance!

Reply:
You can look for, or create, a Gadget to do it. Toolbars are only a feature of the taskbar in Win7.

hmmm... that's not really the same. Cuz with toolbars, i would have the address bar on the bottom, along with several folders all set as small as possible, giving me quick drop-down (or pop-up) menus for Desktop, Control Panel, and a few other folders.

I've never seen a gadget that could do that.  :-\

So anyone have any recommendations of good Address bar gadgets? Or good folder menu gadgets?

Also, can a gadget reserve space on the edge of a window, so windows don't maximize to there?? I think that's another no. Overall i'd have to say gadgets really are NOT a good replacement for deskbands.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Well, you should do as you prefer, but I hold out still that a gadget could give you the perfect 'look and feel' of those old toolbars, given someone who understood HTML and a bit of scripting. It's the reason gadgets were created, to let the user expand in any preferred direction. Good Luck.

Froze on file migration? What should I do?

My installation froze on the last step, file migration, at 64%.  What should I do?

Going into a folder containing burnt DVD files results in complete lock-up

Hi

I burnt a DVD to my windows 7 test machine.   Using explorer and going into that folder (the one containing the .IFO and .VOB files) results in a complete machine lock-up with any attempt to interact with the folder (scrolling or right click on a file for example).  Machine has to be restarted - ctrl-alt-delete doesn't do anything.

Same thing happens if you use a prog and file open inside that folder.

I've tried loads of other folders - its just this one.

Anyone else seen that?  I would submit a bug report - but don't know how to.

Thanks

Upgrade from Vista to 7 takes too long (5 1/2 hours!)

Hi,

I upgraded from Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7 Beta. The Upgrade took 5 1/2 hours(!) to complete.

On the same machine, a fresh install inside a virtual machine took less than 30 minutes.

I was installing on a Dell Latitude E6400. This is a new and fast machine (2,8 Ghz CPU, 8 GB RAM, Hard Disk performance rating 5.8).

If you can't change the speed of the upgrade, at least provide better information on the progress. For example, don't tell me that something could "take several minutes" if in reality it will take several hours. Also, the upgrade showed the # of files it migrated, but it sometimes did not upgrade that number for more than 10 or 15 minutes, so that I was not sure if it was doing anything at all.

Also, you could try to do more in the first phase of the upgrade, where it is still possible to use the machine while setup is running (then I could at least read some web sites or listen to music while I wait).

It IS Beta 1 after all.

well, the setup did mention the upgrade could take several HOURS. Although 5,5 hours is a bit too much. Mine took about 1h. Beta 1 works just fine, except for the confusing new taskbar, where open programs are pinned together with the others (some may say it looks similar to the OSX)

The taskbar behavior can be changed. OS X like? Not really, OS X doens't have a taskbar although it does have a dock and the pinning together might be considered OS X like but that's about it. But as I said, that pinning can be changed. And yes, at Beta 1 I find 7 a lot further along than Vista was at Beta 2. I can't make any assumptions about that system reference to take 5.5 hours to upgrade but as we note, it is Beta 1 and it warns and the number of installed programs as well as type of setup and amount of data can greatly affect upgrade time. Anyway, yes, 5.5 hours is long.  BTW, if you people are upgrading working systems that you depend on I sure hope you imaged your drive. Again this is Beta and I can't count the number of times I've seen this done with no backup and then someone going off about how it hosed their system.

Backing up my complete hard disk before the upgrade was many times faster than migrating my data from Vista to 7, so I think that is their fault and there is room for improvement.

This Dell is the best notebook I ever had. And I had many - HP, Acer, Fujitsu Siemens, other Dell. It is fast, the overall quality of the notebook is very good, it runs for about 7-8 hours, and if you ever need the customer support, they are really good as well.

Hi Aaron,

I currently do not use any Anti Virus software. I used AV software for several years, but it never found anything. It just wasted speed and energy and annoyed me with "upgrade to the pro version" popups. I always install all security updates and I think before I answer UAC prompts, that was enough so far.

Hi John,

I'd love to give feedback to that issue and to many others as well, but the feedback tool won't let me log in. It asks for a LiveID, and when I enter my credentials I always get the error "The given Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs...".

My LiveID is mathias@raacke.info

What do I have to do to get permission to submit feedback? I'd really love to give feedback on many areas of 7.

Thanks,

You need to download and install the SSRS 2008 redistributable components on the machine to get the proper versions of the dlls installed in the GAC in order to utilize the SQL Server Report report items also.  If you have BIDS 2008 installed already you should be fine, but if not then download and install the following components.

Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008

I haven't seen this documented yet, but maybe I overlooked it in the requirements and setup for PPS SP2.

Windows Installer cannot be used anymore and Windows Explorer keeps crashing

For reasons unknown "Windows Installer" became unuseable on my quite fresh W7 64-bit installation today. That means I cannot neither install nor uninstall things.

The last thing I installed today was Nero 7. After that I encoded a DVD via Nero Vision which made the computer BLUE SCREEN right in the middle of the calculations.

Later I ran Prime 95 to test stability and after more than half an hour the computer hang. Screen was black, power-draw/wattage was down to Idle eventhough it should have been at least double as high because of the maximum CPU load.

After that the Windows Installer must have become corrupted.

Windows Explorer also keeps crashing quite often when I'm trying to do configuration or installation work.

After several BLUE SCREENS, Explorer crashings and now this I am not half as much convinced that the BETA is as stable as people keep calling it.

Windows Media Centre

the media centre needs to be a bit more responsive when loading up it takes ages to load up and it takes to much resources up

Windows Media Center in W7 needs some serious optimizations.  When I am watching TV in WMC using my ATI HD Wonder TV tuner card, other programs load very slowly because ehrecvr is using 40-45% of the CPU and ehshell is using 15-20% of the CPU.

media centre needs a better layout. Just big fonts isnt enough maybe even put a background image on the main menu.

Better Boot Screen

Maybe the boot screen should come in several different resolutions so it doesn't look stretched on widescreen displays. Or maybe the boot screen should not be stretched to fit the whole screen.

"Setup can't find any existing partitions..."

I've been trying to install win 7. Each time I do, I reach the menu where it asks me which partition to use. I currently have to disk, each with multiple partitions. One is an external 1TB drive, which Windows seems unable to use because it can't install via usb. The other disk is my internal drive. This drive is the one I've been trying to install to. On it, I have multiple partitions. First there is the factory pre-made 8gb partition made for system recovery. After my vista OS crashed, I setup Ubuntu originally to divide the other partition into to primary partitions, one for Ubuntu, and one for Windows, as soon as I restored it again. Having no luck with the restoration, I decided instead to install win 7 on my hard drive. Of course, Ubuntu further altered the the second of the two new partitions into a few more partitions, so it could operate.

Anyways, right now I am having trouble because as soon as I select the partition I want, the win 7 installer tells me that it can't create or find an existing partition, regardless of whether or not I choose, the partition, or delete it and select the unallocated space. It further tells me to "check the setup logs" but I have no Idea where I can find those. Most of the actual partitioning tools seem to work fine, but when I click "load drivers" I never turn up any results, and I'm not exactly sure what drivers I need to load. It seems this was a pretty sloppily made installation disk, because while I ran the Ubuntu ISO, I had no troubles of any sort.

So could anyone help me? My model is a Sony VAIO, number VGN-FZ283BN. For one thing, I'd like to know where the setup log is to be found. For another thing, I'd like to know what is going wrong with the partitions and the drivers.

Thanks.

Windows 7 corrupted my Data drive

You mean you cannot access it from XP or from Win7???

Did you go into admin tools/device management/disk manage, ment and assign it a drive letter?
Win7 hides your other boot partition from itself to prevent damage unless you activate the drive letter of the other boot partition.

Win7 WMP negatively altering WMA meta-data [subgenre and artist field]

I have a 50,000 song collection [non-DRM, non-subscription] of all *.wma files and they have all been tagged fully and include embedded album art.  A good majority of them also have the sub-genre field filled out and displayed in WMP.

I have the 'add media option' checked if it's missing [not the full overwrite].  I noticed after I installed Win7 B1 x64 version after a few days some of my songs in song view were 'losing' their subgenre fields.  Additionally some of the songs started losing their artist tags and becoming 'unknown'.  Now I had the MP3 corruption KB update installed and I don't know that even that effected *.wma files.

The only other compounding factor could be the presence of the Zune x64 software which is running too and has the add meta data selected.. so either WMP12 in Win7 did this or some interaction w/ the Zune software did it.  I had to return to Vista and restore 150Gigs of music to get around it.

Anyhow, just throwing this out here in case some others are seeing similar wackiness w/ WMP12 and this scenario.
