SQL Express 2008 is live!

SharePoint 2007 + SQL Server 2008 + Windows Server 2008 Implementation material/feedback?

Does anyone know where I can read feedback on implementations of SharePoint 2007 along with SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008? I would like to know any issues, installation risks, specs needed for such implementation. We have SharePoint 2007 currently and SQL Server 2005 and Windows Server 2003 so we are evaluating an upgrade. Thanks.

Posted An Example for comments

All:

I posted my first example SSDS app today here:
http://amundsen.com/examples/ssds/

It has two parts:
- SSDS Proxy server app (C#.NET)
- Web Client (Ajax)

You can download the code (see link on the page).

I think this pattern (SSDS web proxy + clients) is going to be a pretty common model. It has the advantage of not requiring all clients to know the credentials for the SSDS repository. However, it has the disadvantage of using a proxy through which all requests are made (kinda kills the scalability a bit, eh?).

Free free to post comments/observations here or email me directly (see site) if you like.

Interesting stuff Mike.

You raise an important point about SSDS authentication. If you build an app then you probably don't want people hitting the service directly cos you don't want to give out credentials but then if you have to build a proxy then you build in an extra layer - and that is overhead.

I'm very interested in users being able to authorise themselves to an authority, or even a container, rather than a service. So I provide an SSDS service and an app that utilises it - but each user gets their own dedicated container.

I'd like some feedback from the SSDS team on that scenario. And I'd like it to be something other than "We are evaluating all scenarios" or similar.

Seems like we'll need a way to manage user accounts (login, access rights, etc.) if we want to start granting authorization to existing containers/authorities.

Not heard any news on that front from MSFT yet.

LOL

Seriously, we hear you loud and clear. This is feedback we have been receiving from our early previews and we agree its a very important feature. You will see a much more robuest Authentication / Authorization story coming for SSDS. No, I can't be more vocal about the details, and before you comment regarding it, not being able to communicate all of this to the community is killing the team.

Part of the 8 week sprint model we use allows us to be extremely agile and to roll new features every 8 weeks. In a week or two we will be rolling out this Sprints features which will keep everyone busy for quite some time, I promise. Great stuff is coming.

in fact, Jeff Currier has started to talk about some if it here...

One thing that I plan to start pushing is building a community around SSDS, part of which will contain code samples and such. Any chance on you moving your example over to CodePlex and tagging it with SSDS?

We are looking into making the CodePlex projects area on DevCenter live, as in pull the recent SSDS CodePlex projects and push them up there, similiar to the way the recent forums posts work. I will post more details once we have it all worked out, but in the mean time, just tag the project with "SSDS" so we can programmatically pull them...

Hmm, I know I'm pushing it, but can't we at least have a "yes or no" answer to the following question...

"Will we be able to allow client apps to securely make SSDS requests on Authorities that we as app providers, own?" :)

It's an important question in the sense that it pretty much defines how we architect our apps today. If you answered "yes" to this question without even going into details, I'd very happily scrap all my current source code and start over.

Pretty please?

I agree. I would rather be able to access the Live calendar from Windows Live Mail than anywhere else. It should have been part of WLM in the first place and many of us asked for it. It should be incorporated and work similarly to the way that the Sunbird application works inside Thunderbird. That is where to me a calendar is the most use, on the desktop.

Is Microsoft for real?

I've been using Microsoft technologies for more than 14 years and most of that time, I worked as a developer. It was interesting, but first I was drawn to Borland tools: Turbo Pascal, Turbo Assembler, Turbo C, then Turbo C++/OWL, etc. I was then hired by an employer that used Microsoft C/C++ to develop some code for Windows 3.1 and that's how I got into the Microsoft scheme of things. I then fully revamped that app using Visual C++/MFC when Visual C++ first came out, with a Windows IDE - this was back in 1996. And then I learned to love Microsoft tools, mostly because I learned to love MFC and I let my interest in Borland tools die.

More recently, I built a Windows Small Business Server 2003 based LAN for my own use. I use it for some AD domain capabilities like Kerberos delegation passing from my Vista Ultimate PC and through a MOSS 2007 VM and onto the SQL 2005 backend hosted on SBS.

Here are some things that are bothering me about Microsoft:
1. I used to run Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and it behaved a lot like 16-bit Windows. I would be doing things like browsing the Web, and all of a sudden I can't open any context menus, can't open more instances of IE tabs, etc. I remember Windows 3.0/3.1 had this same kind of problem. This and other factors like the necessity to host a MOSS 2007 VM made me switch to Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and it doesn't give me the aforementioned problems about Vista running out of GDI resources, etc. Why couldn't Microsoft rearchitect GDI during the switch to the NT based kernel?

2. I host an ASP.NET 2.0 based website with a third party hosting provider. Its nothing more than a brochure consisting of a single static ASP.NET page with a couple of images and a few hyperlinks.  The only intent is to advertise my willingness to work as a MOSS 2007/ASP.NET consultant/coder in exchange for real money. I deployed this site with the default ASP.NET page settings that include ViewState enabled by default. My site would crash everyday. I know since I have a bot on the Web, looking for my site's presence every half hour and I get an email notification if the site is not available. In fact, I have two bots doing this, and my inbox would be saturated with messages about these crashes. I then attended a couple of Microsoft sponsored events that said it's probably a good idea to disable ViewState among other things for optimizing ASP.NET websites. So, I went and disabled ViewState, since my single ASP.NET page only had static content and I wasn't taking any user input, etc. And my crashes went down by 80% - 85%. Now, I might need ViewState in the future. Why doesn't Microsoft address this issue? ViewState, the Session object, etc. are the handy features of ASP.NET that made me come back to Microsoft's Web technologies in the first place. I hated classic ASP, so giving up these nice features of ASP.NET is a detracting experience.

3. Windows Small Business Server 2003: I bought the Premium Edition - Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium R2 with ISA Server 2004. As you install and configure this product, it can install upto 4 instances of SQL Server 2000 MSDE: one for WSS 2.0 for the company intranet, one for SBS monitoring, one for ISA Server 2004 and one for WSUS 2.0. Out of this the only feature you can avoid is WSUS 2.0 since you can just install WSUS 3.0 that can go against a common SQL Server instance. I have no use for the company intranet, but there's no way to uninstall it and if you do, SBS starts to cause problems. I absolutely need SBS monitoring and ISA Server 2004. You can redirect ISA Server 2004 log files to a common SQL Server instance, but I can't get the ODBC configuration to work.
Here's how this should have been done: SBS 2003 should've been a 64-bit product, and you had to have the capability to redirect all those components so they go against a common SQL Server instance. All these separate instances add a lot of overhead to the memory constrained 32-bit product.

4. SBS 2008: I intend to buy this and deploy it ASAP, only for the enhanced capabilities of Windows Server 2008. But here's the gotcha - no ISA Server included in the Premium Edition. ISA Server 2006 is still a 32-bit product and won't run on SBS 2008, which is a 64-bit product.
Here's how this should've been done: ISA Server 2006 had to have been built as a 64-bit product, not only for SBS, but for a lot of other reasons that include moving everything to a 64-bit architecture ASAP. Why hold on to 32-bit computing? 4GB of addressable memory seemed a lot when the 80386 was released, but definitely not since at the least 2004 when ISA Server 2004 was released. Besides, wasn't it 2004 when Intel went fully 64-bit?

5. Hyper-V in Server 2008: Why is there an arbitrary limitation on the number of CPU cores that a VM can use? And if I run multiple VMs per physical machine, I would want some network QoS capability at the hypervisor level, so that I can segragate and prioritize my IPv6 traffic that has the intelligence for QoS built-in.

All of this suggests a lack of vision at Microsoft and it bothers me since they're my premier software vendor.

  • Edited by SPEnthusiast Monday, August 11, 2008 3:21 PM not Express, it's actually MSDE

This is a common misconception. The adage is that "free RAM is wasted RAM". It doesn't do much good to install a lot of RAM, if it is not going to be used.

The Windows memory manager and prefetcher, (SuperFetch in Vista) will track your historic usage patterns for programs and load the files for the programs that you use the most, when Windows first starts. This means that when you start one of these programs, it will load and run much faster.

When you start another program that needs more RAM, the memory manager will release as much as the program calls for.

There are also many services (eg: Search Indexing, Defrag, etc) that will run only when the computer is idle. As soon as you start using the computer, these components will pause until the computer goes idle again.

There are many utilities available that say they can 'free' any 'unused' RAM? By definition, 'unused Ram' is already 'free RAM'. This is simply snakeoil talk. Programs that purport to 'manage' or 'free up' RAM are pandering to a delusion that only such 'Free' RAM is available for fresh uses. That is not true, and these programs often result in reduced performance and have been documented to result in runaway growth of the page file (Virtual Memory).

You want to make sure that the Superfetch Service is setup properly. Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and make sure that the Superfetch Service is started and set to Automatic.

In Control Panel/System/Advanced System Settings. In the Performance section, click the Settings button. In the Virtual Memory section, click the Change button. Make sure that 'System managed size' is selected.

Creating WSP w/ VS 2008 ???

Hello All,

I know what i want to do is fairly simple however i have having a somewhat daunting time finding the solution.

I simply need to be able to create  redistributable site defnitions wsp for sharepoint.

Currently i have been coding in VS and making css override changes and other design changes via Sharepoint designer. Making a temaplate and going from there. However.

However now i am looking to move away from templates and toward definitions. As I have run into a couple of situations with doing that; such as i generally have a set of images that are associated that well are in their own folder lest say "media"  when pushing a template even when including content such folders and contents never carry over, and i have to open up designer and manually push the folder.

Second i almost always end up having to custmizing the default.master which again not a big deal as a template, but in everything i have found in regards to creating a wsp nothing ever makess referrence to what is needed for creating a site definition with master pages, listforms etc.

So i figured rather than labor over this anymore i should ask the community as i am guessing most everyone else is not having this issue.

Dell Workstation Asset Inentory

Hello,

This is probably a shot in the dark but I thought I might try to see if anyone here has helpful information or advice.  In our office environment, all our end-users work from Dell workstations.  I'm wondering if there is a management pack for SCE that will pull asset information from the BIOS (such as service tags) from all the workstations.  I know there is a MP for the Dell servers that does this and I'm wondering if there is a similar MP for the workstations.

Thanks in advance.

Quick point in the right direction

I was going to go for the (isc)2 but I have decided to go the route with Microsoft.  I want to learn more of the architecture and building of and maintain of security with enterprize applications. As I am paging through the lessons it appears that I am arrive here at almost a cross road between 2003 and 2007-8 servers.  Also I noticed something about 4 core requirements are these all changing as well and should I wait for a full transition? But I have most of the training done already from the DoD but never took the test afterwards. The point being is there new core requirements and then for lets just call them electives to become a "security" expert. Should I just forget the 2003 SR2 info and just get to know the 08. Basically I have been trained by the government so I need very Linear instructions and I have as research already have a ton of lesson I don't really need. Just a quick post to a plausible curriculum for what I want: like you need the 70-71-72-73-74, then whatever numbers for security.  I will continue to forge ahead on my own but I will check back and see if there is anything here.

Another Licensing Query

Hi,

We are preparing to deploy a system and figuring out exactly what to deploy is proving a challenge. Much admiration and thanks if you have sorted out Microsoft's licensing!

We've developed and tested (as MSDN members) on Vista x64/ASP.NET 3.5/IIS7/SQLServer2005 developer. It is a pure web application using ASP.NET authentication -- only ASP.NET access (and SQL Server back-end).

The machine we have available: x64 Intel quad core with 64GB! memory.

1. If we go with Windows Web Server 2008, we can only use half our memory. If we go with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, will we need CALS? If so, prohibitive.

2. And should we use SQL Server 2005, 2008, or 2008 Web Edition? ... Any licensing restrictions here regarding connections via ASP.NET/IIS7?

Advice and tips?

THANKS!

Richard

SQL Server 2008 was released!

Microsoft released SQL Server 2008 on Wednesday. The new database software is a continuation of Microsoft's efforts to bolster SQL Server's credibility as a highly scalable database and the cornerstone to Microsoft's evolving "data platform."

"If you added up all of our investments in SQL Server 2008, it was data warehouse scale that got the highest level of investment," Ted Kummert, the VP of Microsoft's data platform and storage division, said on a conference call with reporters and analysts. Microsoft already claims numerous deployments of multiterabyte, heavily accessed databases and has largely gotten over its reputation as a system that couldn't scale, but the company continued that focus in this release.

2006 SP1 Breaks publishing of URL's containing DBCS characters ?

Since I installed 2006 SP1, all attempts to access documents with DBCS characters in the name from a published website will fail with

"Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The HTTP message includes an unsupported header or an unsupported combination of headers (12156)"

Example of URL that fails.

https://www.mysite.com/secure/attachment/17168576/readablename.pdf works fine.

I am 100% certain that this worked ok before SP1 install, because I had to uncheck the "block high bit characters" option in HTTP Filter to get the download of these documents with DBCS characters in their name to work (pre SP1).

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

I created a txt file on my server. Renamed it to 10GbE-IF3E%E8%B3%87%E6%96%99.pdf
Disabled the block high bit and when I try to point my broswer to it, it tells me error 404 page not found. I have SP1 btw installed.
If high bit block is ON then I get denied by the http filter bla bla

Sometimes Can't Page Up or Page Down Viewing Thread In IE 7 on Vista

Now and then, while I am reading a thread on the forum, I find the PgUp and PgDn keys don't work in IE 7 on Vista SP1.

I can re-create this by clicking in the body of a reply (below the heading). Once clicked, all the page navigation keys stop working.

To restore navigation, I can click in the reply heading or to the right of the thread.

Scrolling using my Thinkpad Trackpoint device (superb!) is also rather clunky, which is why I sometimes resort to using the keyboard...
