Easy Solution

Easy Solution

I just want everyone to know I felt your pain. I had been without my cd/dvd drive for months. The solution is simple even for a not so computer savy person like myself. There is a easy detailed descrition on what to do. Look for instructions on deleting the upper and lower philters. It is on one of these poting pages. Following those steps saved me a trip to the store to have them fix it.

GO HERE!!!!! Follow the directions carefully, because delteing the wrong things could really mess wiht our OS.

Have you tried turning down the visual settings on the game?  You might simply be pushing your hardware past its limits...

"age of kings2" - would that be Age of Empires II - the Age of Kings?

"1gb ram" is a bit on the light side.  Vista, in general, runs a lot better with 2GB RAM.  For that matter, gaming under XP was also a lot better with 2GB.

"amd processor up to date latest," unfortunately, means nothing.  Might you have a model number?  Example:  Athlon64 X2 5200+

"ati radeon graphics 500mb," again, means nothing without a model number.  In any event, ATI (nor nVidia) makes a videocard wtih a 500MB buffer, as that amount of memory isn't possible (it goes 64, 128, 256, 512, 768, 1024.)

Would this happen to be an OEM (HP, Dell, etc.) machine, one bought from a local builder, or one you built yourself?

The 'could not initialize graphics' error points, most likely, to faulty/out-of-date videocard drivers.
The hosting error (drive path) would be in the in-game configuration, not with your system.

Bug report: taskbar background wrong in dual monitor setup

I'd like to file a bug report but I don't know where, so this'll have to do: Follow these steps
1) Get a dual (or more) monitor set up
2) Set a secondary monitor to the left of the primary
3) Set a (large) background image to tile
After a couple of seconds the backgound behind the transparent taskbar is wrong: it seems to be relative to the top-left corner of the left monitor while the rest of the background is relative to the top-left corner of the primary monitor: the picture is clearly sheared.

From Field in Sharepoint alert emails displays =?utf-8?B?=......

when i setup an alert it sends me an email and it works fine.  The from name and everything is fine.  however once i make a change of any kind / add / delete etc the from field from that point on always says "=?utf-8?B?"=" in the from field.  the inital email that it sends you to let you know an alert is setup uses the correct from name thats setup in outgoing email settings in central administration.  why don't all the others?

using WSS 3.0 sp 1 on windows 2008 machine.

MCTS: Windows Vista, Configuration

Hi there,

Are anyone from Portugal who's started the Certification mentioned above?

MCITP - Operations Manager (Without MOF or ITIL)

Hi Friends,

My intention with this post is discuss about MCITP Certification called Operations Manager. This certification is the status of professionals approved in SCOM (70-400) and SCCM (70-401) certifications. Early Microsoft think offer the MCITP through one exam without name (70-402), but after a lot of discussion this approach was changed (http://forums.technet.microsoft.com/en-US/MOF4/thread/86471b8f-477c-45ac-a385-163bf9925d41).

Now when you are approved in two exams (SCOM and SCCM) you already recognized as MCITP, but I want to know, What you think about this?

I think that to be a MCITP called Operations Manager the individual has to need more knowledge about MOF and ITIL, and this is what doesn't happen here

Ps: I was approved in these two exams and I'm MCITP now.

Guys,
This issue was solved, I received one answer from Microsoft, take a look:

Hello,

We are writing to let you know of a correction we are making to your Microsoft Certification records. You may have noticed that after passing the following two Microsoft certification exams:

• Exam 70-400:  Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007, Configuring
• Exam 70-401: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, Configuring

You were awarded a "Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP): Operations Manager" certification as well. Unfortunately, this is due to an error on our side: there is no "MCITP: Operations Manager" certification available today.

We are working on developing a certification for the operations space, but nothing has been finalized or announced to date.
Our systems are being updated to correct this mistake by removing references to the non-existent "MCITP: Operations Manager" certification.  We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and appreciate your understanding. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact us.

Cannot get email channel to work

Hello All,

I am trying to get an email notification sent to myself when the heartbeats stop coming from a particular machine, but so far I cannot get this notification to work.  I have setup the following:

1) Under Administration, I have setup an smtp server under settings/notification/E-mail

2) I have tested I can send email from the specified smtp server (setup under IIS on the same box as the SCE server) via telnet

3) I have setup the daily health report, with same server settings, and it runs fine (just showing again the smtp server works)

4) I have setup a Run As Account, and named it "Notification Action Account" and associated this to my domain admin account.

5) Under Run As Profiles, I have associated the run as account created above with the SCE server, the particular machine I am testing the heartbeats on/off with, and our actual email server.  From what I have read, I need to to this step to complete an Email Channel to get email notifications to work.  Was not sure which particular box to associate this account with (I assumed it was the SCE server, but not 100% sure), so I choose all machines involved.

6) I setup myself as a recipient under notifications

7) I setup a subscription with the following settings:

General: Name is Test Heartbeat, and recipient is my email address

User role Filerter: Set to default settings

Groups: I choose the All Clients group which includes the machine I am testing for heartbeats

Classes: I have the all the classes that begin with "Health Service Watcher" selected (10 in total)

Alert Criteria: I have everthing selected (although, I know I can reduce this down later)

Alert Aging: Default settings

Formats: I have the Use Custom e-mail format checked, w/ defaults

Any ideas on what else I may need to be doing, or anything I do not have setup properly?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi,

It seems that the configured SMTP server is working properly and your domain user can use it to send emails correctly. And I think what you need is some details about every step. So I would suggest the following articles for you to configure the E-mail Notification Channel.

Thanks.  I tried these solutions, except testing notfifications (I know that other notifications are already working) and still I cannot get an alert for heartbeat failure.  I do get the failed heartbeat event in the Operations Manager Event log, but still no error.  Any more ideas on how I can get this thing to trigger an alert?

Any ideas on how to develop custom field

Hallo!

I need a field with such properties:
In edit/new mode
1. It must look at value of other field of current item
2. In condition from [1] it must lookup value from one of two lists
3. Each list contains hierarchical data with 2 levels of hierarchy. the actual display value of the field must be "level1/level2"

In display mode the field must be show as "level1/level2" (in forms, lists, views and any other area)

I've developed custom field and control, and all it works fine, until I need to display the value in lists. The apearence in lists is ruled by CAML in custom field xml definition. So I have to inherit from MultiColumn field to keep display value also, and to be able to write CAML to show it.
But I am not like this solution:
1. field values will not recieve cascade updates when corresponding list item will be updated.
2. filtering on my field is problem, which I described here: http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/63e3e74a-c75b-402a-85c5-71aeeacf195e

So I am looking for some other solution of the task. But haven't any ideas. Maybe I have to develop custom field value class, but I don't see how it will help me to customize my field apearance in list views.

How To Filter Data In Sharepoint Based On Users ID(tp_ID) In Sharepoint

Hi,

I got 2 pages in sharepoint, the 1st page showing ALL the users in the GridView(build by our own and getting ALL the users from the sharepoint database based on form base authentication) and normally
the 2nd page also showing ALL the records of users's working experiences(1 user can have multiple records) and the second page i was using the sharepoint custom list. Now, once i click either 1 users in first page and there will redirect to the 2nd page and showing current users record only, may i know how to filter the user's record based on user id(tp_ID) from 1st page and filter in the 2nd page. Or do you have any better idea? Your help will be appreciated.

I believe this would be best suited for a custom webpart that placed the first click (UserID) into a query string parameter for the second page to display the data in a second webpart that read from the query string parameter.

So after the first click, you would see something like this in the second page ...

http://server/site/default.aspx?userid = 1234

Where the webpart had logic to filter the 1234.

Ray you can use the Webpart connections.
This will allow you for the same webparts on the same page or to another page.
You can use parameters for this webpart connection.

What do most people use....

I am soliciting people's opinion on whether or not they think that it is better to use a SQL database or the internal windows database.

This goes along with my other post on how to convert back to the internal database.

The issue is that our company's SharePoint team made a recommendation to use a SQL database instead of the internal database.  We are currently using the Services only, but are looking towards the future and SharePoint Server ( and other reasons).  We are being overridden by management.

I am looking for some suggestions that will either prove my point and stick with SQL or change my mind and convince me that the internal database is good enough.

Thanks a bunch!

If you have a liscense for SQL, then I definitly think it is a better option.  The tool set alone speaks for itself.  WID is great for a stand alone machine when someone is playing around but anything other than that, I would encourage SQL.

Your company's SharePoint team is right on the money.  It is a solid recommendation on their part.

The WID is really Sql Server Embedded Edition which is a version of Sql Express.  I believe they remove some of the bottleneck in the WID but there are still many limitations.  If you are considering moving to MOSS in the future, then I would strongly recommend moving to SQL now so you don't have to do it later.  Upgrading from WID to SQL can be done, but it is a level of effort.

Cannot use Microsoft Online provisioned domain as default

If a company signs up for the Microsoft Online Beta, adds a domain to Microsoft Online, makes that domain the default domain and then they decide to remove that domain and use the original domain that they received when they registered with Microsoft Online, they may experience e-mail flow issues.

Scenario

1.       Company Contoso registers with Microsoft Online and is provisioned with the domain contoso1.microsoftonline.com.

2.       Company Contoso already owns the contoso.com domain.

3.       Company Contoso adds the contoso.com domain to Microsoft Online and makes it their default domain.

4.       Sometime later, the Contoso company removes the contoso.com domain from Microsoft Online and tries to make their original domain, contoso1.microsoftonline.com, the default domain.

5.       When attempting to set contoso1.microsoftonline.com as their default domain, they receive the following error:

"Your update was unable to complete. An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again."

Potential Issues

  • If the contoso.com domain was set as Authoritative in Microsoft Online, the Contoso company may experience e-mail flow problems.
  • If the Contoso company created a secondary domain, like mail.contoso.com, and set that domain as Authoritative in Microsoft Online, and if the Contoso company has an in-house domain with the same name, e-mail sent from Microsoft Online will not be correctly routed to the customer's in house domain.  This is due to mail routing  and if a user's mailbox and email address are found locally (Microsoft Online), the message will be delivered locally.

Work Around

To prevent e-mail flow issues, the Contoso company must change their contoso.com domain to External Relay in Microsoft Online, and then set their in-house e-mail server as Authoritative for that domain by managing their Contoso MX records. They should also set the contoso1.microsoftonline.com domain as Authoritative in the Microsoft Online Admin Center.

Reply:

To supplement and help clarify the above technical information, could you please provide a flow diagram of each various topologies such that they show the shortcomings of misconfiguration vs. proper configuration?  This is is a high level DNS MX record issue that many using and setting up Online Services may be completely unfamiliar with.  ..."picture is worth a thousand words"

FYI - Just yesterday I discovered a couple of helpful capture tools including Microsoft Office Labs Community Clips as well as JING (TechSmith known for SnagIT).

As long as they respond I'll be happy. The blogs are NEVER updated and are filled with spam comments. (mod preview comments perhaps?) I often get the felling that the live team sits up in the office throwing beach balls and paper airplanes and respond when they get bored with their games.

Interaction with the team as well as updates to the actual product would be nice. You wouldn't be criticized as much.

Thanks Microsoft -- for 2008 Analysis Services Data Mining Documentation

Thanks Microsoft team -- for the excellent documenation for Analysis Services Data Mining in the 2008 Books Online.  It is so much better, that I HAD to have my own RC local copy even though the RTP is so close.

One of the many gems in the documentation is the definition of data mining job roles.  Job roles provide a way to triage initial requests for someone saying that they are interested in learning a specific topic.  For "Analysis Services Data Mining" this list was improved over the 2005 documentation (where five roles are listed for Analysis Services) because only three roles are targeted:

I had been having a discussion today with an MVP on how to teach or communicate the Data Mining technology, and I had conceputally outlined these same three categories.  Because these job roles are neatly embedded in the documentation, I now have a specific reference point for using these terms.  For anyone who has not studied the 2008 documentation, there are other specific job roles in other contexts, and may add other roles including Information Worker and Administrator.

The documentation has other gems, notably I believe a good reorganization of topics to have similar categories across the core SQL Server technologies.  Like most everyone else, I first use the search box when I am looking for something because that search can be both local and online.  However, this new reorganization compels me to read through the Books Online -- well like a book -- because the topics and subtopics are structured in a way that encourages reading entire sections and not just one page.

Reply:

Thank you, Mark, for taking the time to provide positive feedback, and especially for providing specifics about what worked well in this release of BOL.

The new reorganization of content represents SQL Server's implementation of the Unified Content Model (UCM), which is part of an initiative to apply common engineering criteria to all Microsoft server products. By defining core content areas and then using that same content organization in the documentation of all enterprise products, we hope to give users a more consistent Help experience.

However, the BOL team found it a challenge to fit all the features and components of SQL Server into this framework, so I am glad to hear that you feel it makes BOL more browsable.

Re job roles:

On the AS doc team, we discussed whether the Information Worker was part of our target audience for AS, but decided in the end that the IW was more likely to use the Excel add-ins for data mining and that we should not target that audience in BOL. What do you think?

We welcome ongoing feedback about the job roles and any content that you think should be added to help each audience. We are definitely a little short of content for the Admin/Architect role and hope to improve this area for RTW2.

Again, thanks for the kind words!!

Reply:
Hi Jeannine

Thanks for asking about AS -- I believe that the technologies are layered, and as you say, Information Workers may use AS indirectly through Excel, a custom .NET desktop application or perhaps through Sharepoint.  Thus, I would point them to the face they know, any of those portals I named.  The Excel add-ins are not just data mining, but provide access generally to cubes and all AS technology.

The AS interface is Business Intelligence Development Studio, and so any consumers of Visual Studio products could be direct consumers of the technologies there.

I like the idea behind UCM, and the desire to standardize the enterprise level products.  I saw quite a bit of content in Architect for AS Data Mining, but I'm downloading the Aug 4 Books Online today and I can take a new look at AS.  Are you only working in Data  Mining documentation or other areas too?

------------------------------------
Reply:

I work on data mining only, but work closely with the writers on the OLAP side. (They've done a great job of updating the tutorials, by the way!) We try not to duplicate information and they have some great resources, so where possible content is shared. That's why some topics that you'll find in the data mining area of BOL are actually mirrored from the Multidimensional Database area. If you believe that either the OLAP or DM topics are lacking in information you need, let us know and we will coordinate on adding the content.

Also, I used to be the editor for Integration Services, so I am working with the lead writer on that team to possibly add some documentation on the SSIS data mining components. Jamie did a nice walkthrough for 2005, available from sqlserverdatamining.com, but we don't have much in BOL. If you can think of any scenarios that you'd really like to see a walkthrough for, please let us know.
