Strange Preview Bug

Strange Preview Bug

If you locate the thread

http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/vcgeneral/thread/f2598461-7d6f-4b6b-ad16-f7dd742d7b38

in the Visual C++ General Forum, you will find that it cannot be previewed. This happens also when I view this thread in My Threads. Other threads in teh same display can be previewed normally.

This happens for me both on IE6 and SeaMonkey (Mozilla).

this sounds similar to that problem that we had with the c# thread. I'll look into it tomorrow. If it's the same thing, we know what state causes the error, but not how it gets into that state. If it has occurred again, I'll see if I can get investigation of this raised in priority.

Here's another one, currently on page #3 in the C# General forum.  Looking at the traffic with FireBug, I see this:

POST GetMessages, response = 500 Internal Server Error.
{"threadId":"40f91130-b0e1-48c4-b39f-07b2bc255374","start":0,"maxCount":20}

The error is not visible anywhere on the page.

If I re-issue the POST, I get this response:
{"Message":"There was an error processing the request.","StackTrace":"","ExceptionType":""}

That's as far as I can take it.  You should have no trouble repro-ing this bug.

Hans, are you still seeing a problem with that 2nd thread? I'm not seeing it.

I'm still looking at the original problem... I can reproduce that.

Reply:
Yes, the problem is still there.  Beware that you have to be on the forum view page, it is now on page #8.  Dropping down the preview is what fails.  I was wrong, there is actually a "There was an error" message display at the top of the page as soon as you click the drop-down arrow.  It is definitely *not* the same kind of problem you debugged before at the C# General forum.  The thread shows without a problem if you open it in a new tab.
Hans Passant.

Ah, ok... then I found the problem this afternoon. Those threads have couple REALLY long messages in them, so the max JSON message size (don't remember the exact property off the top of my head) was set too small. I increased the size on my dev box this afternoon and the 1st thread loaded fine... I'll try the 2nd one too, but it should be good. Should be able to have this fix out in the next couple weeks...

Virtual Server 2005 x64 on Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise

Hello all,
    The configuration:

        Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise w/ ADDS, DNS, and IIS Roles installed with no other applications installed yet.
        Installed Windwos Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 x64 and also patched it with KB948515 (supposedly fully enables support for Server 08, Vista SP1, and XP SP3)
        Restarted the server to allow full refresh of all services

    The Problem:

        When I attempt to run the Administration website, I get a download request for VSWebApp.exe saying it is an unknown file type and I am unable to proceed any further.

Is this an issue with the default configuration in IIS7?  or...
Is there a published work around for this problem?  or...
Did I miss another KB patch to fix the first patch?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Dan

Options Missing in Windows Media Player

FOR 32-BIT BASED OPERATING SYSTEMS (WINDOWS VISTA ONLY)

-->Problem (1): My V Cast Music Manager give me an error stating that my Windows Media PLayer is not installed or Installation is not completed.

-->Problem (2): When I load Windows Media Player and click on Tools at the top and click on Options from the drop down list. I ONLY see the Burn Tab.

-->This will fix BOTH problems.

-->ENTER ONLY want you see.

-->Register the following files going through start-->run-->cmd:

regsvr32 Dxmasf.dll
regsvr32 Msdxm.ocx
regsvr32 Spwmp.dll
regsvr32 Wmp.dll
regsvr32 Wmp.mof
regsvr32 Wmploc.dll
regsvr32 Mediametadatahandler.dll
regsvr32 Wmplayer.exe

-->If you should get and error when entering these dll & ocx file(s). Just keep going and ignore them and continue entering each command. Once all have been entered. You MUST restart your computer (even if it does not ask you to restart) for these files to register correctly. If you choose not to restart your computer it MAY do damage to your WMP which can do damage to your Vista based Operating System.

-->Once you have restarted your computer and logged back into Windows. Run "V Cast Music Manager" again and it should work. It worked for me.

-->I was on the phone with Microsoft for 2 hours trying to get this problem fixed. He was nice enough to give me all the ocx and dll files to fix these problems.

SharePoint 2007 limitations

I have found following strange limitations of SharePoint 2007 while working on Lotus Notes migration to SharePoint 2007 project during last one year.

Does anyone aware of following limitations, work around for the same and rationale behind the limitations?

More limitations to come …

Document Library

Document library does not have "enhanced rich text" for "multiple lines text" column.

 Other lists

·         "SendTo – Email link" function like document library items is not available for list items.

Discussion board

·         Cannot move or copy a discussion board items using "Manage content and structure" to other discussion board.

Views

·         "Group by" criteria cannot be created for choice or lookup column with multiple values.

·         Only two levels of nested "group by" criteria are available.

 Alerts

·         Alert cannot be created for entire site content without creating alerts for each and every list in the site.

Others

·         Calculated column cannot have formula with systems field like created by, modified by, created date, modified date etc.

Reply:
Technically MOSS sites can be saved as a template (assuming we are talking about publishing sites). However this functionality is hidden because there are some potential issues such as saving a publishing site (created from a publishing site template) as a new site template will not work correctly.

Just wanted to clarify that as I have personally used MOSS publishing sites and made some into templates (using built in functionality) to satisfy some very specific needs, so this functionality still exists with MOSS, it just doesn't have a link to the savetmpl.aspx page in site settings (most likely for the reason listed above).

------------------------------------
Reply:
Using save as template in a publishing page can cause all kinds of odd results. Sometimes it seems to work fine but other times you get really random issues. Publishing sites are not meant to be used as templates. If you need to create a custom site type based on a publishing site the supported route is to create a site definition based off of the Out of the Box publishing site definition. Just make sure you create a copy of the publishing site definition and do not alter the existing out of the box version as this is unsupported since the out of the box site definitions can be overwritten in a patch or service pack. So make a copy of the publishing site definition, give it your own name and work from there.

As far as I can tell the easiest way seems to add an EventHandler to each blog. Every time an author adds a new article it's being copied to the Master blog. To store only the latest article you would have to store the URL of each blog alongside.
Another possible solution could be using the Content Query Web Part. You would group the articles by blog to which their belong and then display only the first one using XSLT.

Since the Server 2008 product is now RTM, your Server 2008 RC1 Beta version will not apply as a product that the HV RC0 update applies to.  Get the RTM code.  If you haven't gone to a product launch yet I'd highly encourage you to go as you will not only gain a lot of great knowledge but also a 1-yr copy of Server 2008 Enterprise.  I believe you can also just download a trial - {start at} www.HeroesHappenHere.com

I also happen to be getting the same "The update does not apply to your system." when I run the 64-bit version of the update on my 64-bit system.  The install is RTM and English.

I looked at the BuildLabEx registry key and it looks like I do have the RTM version:  6001.18000.amd64fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840

Any ideas?

What to consider before you upgrade

Upgrading from the Release Candidate to the release version

Saved state files are not supported between the Release Candidate (RC) and the release version of Hyper-V. All virtual machines should be shut down correctly before you install the release version of Hyper-V.

Note If you have already applied the release version of Hyper-V, virtual machines in a saved state will not start. Additionally, you will receive the following error message:
An attempt to initialize the virtual machine saved state failed.
To resolve this issue, select the "Delete Save State" option for each virtual machine that is currently in a saved state.
Snapshot files are not supported between the Release Candidate (RC) and release version of Hyper-V. All virtual machine snapshots should be deleted by using the "Delete Snapshot Subtree" option for each virtual machine.

Note After you delete the snapshots and after you shut down the virtual machines, the changes that exist in the snapshot files (.avhd files) will merge into the parent virtual hard disk file (.vhd).

This operation can take a while. To verify that the snapshots have merged into the parent virtual hard disk file, locate the snapshots, and then verify that no .avhd files exist.
Note The saved state and snapshot files are compatible if you are upgrading from Release Candidate 1 (RC1) to the release version of Hyper-V.

Upgrading from a prerelease version (beta version) of Hyper-V to the release version of Hyper-V

If you run virtual machines on a Hyper-V prerelease build, follow the steps that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article after you upgrade to the release version of Hyper-V:
949222 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949222/) Virtual machines that were created on the beta version of the Hyper-V role do not start after the Hyper-V role is updated to a later version

You can manage your Hyper-V server and the VMs running on it from a Vista SP1 machine. To manage multiple machines, use System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).

Update for Windows Vista (KB949587)
DownloadDownload the Update for Windows Vista (KB949587) package now. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D0284CEE-0E79-4453-895A-11AA8CFE6E6A)
Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB949587)

 After you have downloaded the pacakage, you will need to modify the start menu to find them (Administrative Tools" Hyper-V Manager).

  1. RightClick the Start menu and then click Properties
  2. Click the Start Menu tab, and then click the Customize... button
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click your choice for System administrative tools, then click OK twice

To start the Hyper-v Manager click Start>Administrative Tools> Hyper-V Manager

Personalizable Properties Help

Hello all,

I'm looking for help with personalizable attributes. I have an attribute in my webpart:

[Personalizable(PersonalizationScope.User)]
public string UserRead {
 get { return _userRead; }
 set { _userRead = value; }
}

Which stores a delimited list of information for a news and announcements web part such that it will remember the items which have been clicked on (hide items which have been 'read')

My backend code and javascript is all working and when a news item is clicked in the webpart it does a postback with information about the item clicked.
The information is then added to the property above and then the user is redirected to the list item they clicked on.

The issue is that the UserRead property NEVER remembers any changes made to it when in the C# code. Infact, i believe it forgets everything except its default value if you change its value in code.
This is not the first time i have come accross this problem, but its the first time it really mattered.

I have tried putting

this.WebPartManager.BeginWebPartEditing(this);
this.WebPartManager.EndWebPartEditing();

around the spot where i change the property variable, and have tried

this.SetPersonalizationDirty();

but i cant seem to get the change to stick.

Anyone come across this and found a solution? or have something working already?

I've tried adding more [...] information above the property declaration to specify exactly what should be done with it but havent found anything that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Thor Ahlberg.

how to maintain session state between asp.net site and MOSS site ?

Hi,

question is:

I have created a FBA internet site in MOSS .

i am able to add users from my aspnetdb database from sql server.

 i have also created a asp.net web site which uses the same aspnetdb user credentials to login .

My idea is to maintain the session state between the two sites.
ie. suppose i have logged into Site1(asp.net web site) and if i click a link in the site menu redirecting me to Site2(MOSS internet enabled site), i should not be asked to login again.

Is it possible or is there any other workaround.

plz give me any help u can.

Reply:
Hi

I am no expert on MOSS yet, but I could make 2 recommendations....

1. Implement a Single Sign on Solution to handle your authentications in both applications. An example of this would be the Windows Live Sign on Utility, but other custom providers are available, I am sure you can even write your own.

2. Use Windows Authentication across both sites - Additional browser configuration is required but its not that technical, sites just need to be added to a certain trusted zone, but its possible both in FireFox and IE to do this. You'll have access to the Identity in both sites, but the sessions will not be shared, however you could implement a SQL database table holding 1 record for every user on both sites, and then pulling this record from the Identity.

Hope this helps...

I would try this out , but do you mean to say that it is not possible to share the sessions between the two sites.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Yes sessions can be accessed only in the context of the site in which they were created.

What if i used outproc and store the sessions in database ...and retreive it for use for other application?

Hyper-V on new Server 2008 - You might not have the permission... on local machine...

Just finished solving this one.  New install Server 2008 on a dual Xeon Quad Core w/8GB Ram.  System went on clean, got all drivers installed, and added the Hyper-V role.  Could not connect with the local server.  Everything looked ok, and nothing was getting posted in the event logs (all services running, etc.)  Finally diagnosed it to a bit of confusion in the computer name!  When installing 2008, I always rename the computer, and did so this time.  When I checked the name, it appeared to be correct in computer --> properties, and the Hyper-V manager saw it and just couldn't connect with it.  Only after turning on file sharing did I notice that in Network, the computer showed up with the original name the install process put in.  I changed on digit in the computer name and changed it and after a reboot, all worked OK!  Has anyone else seen this abnormality?  (Nothing seemed abnormal during the installation...) Would appear to be a glitch in the 2008 install script.

That's a new one for me...I haven't seen that before. :)  Glad you solved it and thanks for sharing!

Error messages

I think "users may experience 500 errors" could be more like "users may get error messages (error 500)", because the first one gives the expression of experiencing errors a lot.

Device not connecting to DM, not getting policies, inventory not updating

All, please refer to this link for all the above issues: http://blogs.technet.com/scmdm/archive/2008/08/19/troubleshooting-device-connection-to-the-device-management-server.aspx

Follow the guidance there _after_ you've run BPA (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scmdm/cc304591.aspx), have verified that there are no routing issues (esp to/from the VPN Pool to the subnet where the DM is located), and that the correct firewall ports are open.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to read the copious and extremely useful info in the doc library (Planning Guide, Deployment Guide, Firewalls, Globals. Link here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc135653.aspx).

This info is referenced in a number of threads, but I'm posting it on its own so it's easier for people to find.

At the same time, there is no UI feedback for "button has been clicked, but the action will happen when the timer goes off". They should change "Submit" to "Submitting", "Propose as Answer" to "Proposing", etc. They might even find one of those cute AJAX "I'm working on it" animations and use that uniformly, to avoid localization.

But they need some visual indicator that we've clicked in the right place, that they've seen the request, and that any further delay is due to performance issues, and that we do not need to click the button again.

It almost makes me dread clicking Submit, because I don't know when the request has been submitted until I see the reply window drop down.

SVN Tagging

Hi All,

What is the use of tagging command in SVN.
what does internally happened when we use tag.

I browsed and at many places i observed that "Branching and tagging are same".

A tag is just a "snapshot" of a project in time. In Subversion, this idea already seems to be everywhere. Each repository revision is exactly that—a snapshot of the filesystem after each commit.

I need to tag after every release
How can i do that

pls help

Thanks,
Sandeep
