Undocumented firewall bypass for accessing ISCSI targets
Hi,
in the research of automating windows 2008 deployment I came accross a strange problem.
I was not able to configure firewall or advanced firewall for having access to ISCSI targets.
I found the following workaround with AllowiSNSFirewallException:
sc config MSiSCSI start= auto
net start MSiSCSI
REG ADD "\\%COMPUTERNAME%\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\iSCSI\Discovery" /v AllowiSNSFirewallException /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0000001 /f
iSCSIcli QAddTargetPortal gen-netapp03
iSCSIcli ListTargets
iSCSIcli QloginTarget iqn.1992-08.com.netappn.101173073
iSCSIcli PersistentLoginTarget iqn.1992-08.com.netappn.101173073
iSCSIcli ListPersistentTargets T * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 0
iSCSIcli ReportTargetMappings
I my opinion is this a bypass of the whole firewall security model implemented in w2k8.

Windows Media Player offline and Vista
I have terrible problems with WMP offline. Trying to play a DVD is torture. It was so easy with XP. Just pop the dvd in and it played...but on Vista, it sits there doing absolutely nothing, until suddenly a crazy looking colorful screen with jagged zigzag lines comes up and I have to manually reboot.
I want to be able to watch my DVD's again!
Errors in the BOL Documentation
I was doing some research and reading in the BOL today on TVF's while trying to figure out the answer to a question that I had, when I noticed that there are some errors in the content for TVF's. I opened a Connect Feedback for this:

If you have the time, please review this, and validate it.

Data Mining demonstrations
Thought I would share this with you. I have created a couple of data mining demonstrations on the internet. These are using real data.
Book Suggestion
http://richardlees.com.au/sites/Demonstrations/Pages/LibrariesSuggestions.aspx
This is data from a municipal library and is using demographics and books borrowed to predict (suggest) other books. The scenario is very similar to product suggestion for an organisation. Note how fast the data mining queries are executing and getting information back to end user.
Response Prediction
http://richardlees.com.au/sites/Demonstrations/Pages/PredictingLatenciesusingDataMining.aspx
This demonstration is trying to predict what the response time would be for the last 50 hits to the web site based on all the attributes of the request. There is no value in making these predictions other than demonstrate data mining. The algorithm used is Decision Trees with regression.

Enable Direct Push over HTTP(s) option is missing
There appears to be a lot of confusion out there regarding this issue and how to solve it. The problem I'm referring to is with Windows 2003 Exchange Server (SBS, Enterprise, Standard, etc) and the missing Direct Push features from the Mobile Services Properties window. Everything I've read says to reinstall SP2 if the direct push options don't exist, however, what they don't say is WHICH service pack to reinstall.
There are two separate service packs for Windows 2003 Exchange Servers. One is a general service pack with hot fixes and other updates, and the second is a very specific service pack for Exchange. It's the second service pack for Exchange which contains the direct push functionalities that needs to be reinstalled (or installed if you haven't already done so).
If you are missing the "Enable Direct Push over HTTP(s)" feature from the Mobile Services Properties window, then reinstall SP2 for Exchange. If you haven't already installed it you can download it from the link bellow:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/bb288486.aspx
Hopefully that clears it up for everyone.
Cheers!
Warning: Slipstreaming sp3 into earlier versions of Microsoft Windows XP.
Hi everyone,
Well, I just wanted to warn all of you about a serious issue with slipstreaming SP3!
If you have the original Windows XP disk from Microsoft, DO NOT remove or change any files on that disk! Do not use
Mt.Dew's slip streaming script bat file. Windows SP3 is actually a large roll up to SP2. The Setup system for the sp3
is designed to detect sp2 or earlier microsoft original cd disk and make the neccessary changes needed! Also, Do Not
slip stream the Daylight Time Zone Changes into sp3 because it is already included in sp3.
Also, If your Original Microsoft Windows XP SP2 disk has any Microsoft Slip Streamed KB's in them put in by Microsoft,
Do Not Remove Them!!! They will not be installed but are needed because of the original setup script of your CD!!!!
I had a hell of a time with Mt. Dews scripted windows xp3 bat file! Mt.Dew - You have to leave the original files
of the cd! My problems went away after slip streaming sp3 into the original xp cd! I think many of your network
internet connection problems may go away if you leave the old files in sp3!
Just wanted to update all of you.
My computer is now running normal now!
Take Care,
the sunnytexas

Please put an end to these debates by providing a way to read these forums offline. Ideally this would use Live Mesh so that we can have the benefits of NNTP (i.e. offline reading and posting, threaded conversations) whilst still having the richness of web forums.

[HELP] Connecting Canon MP970 to router
Hi,
This is my first post here.
So my problem is that I have a Canon MP970 multi-function printer and I am not able to get it work with my router. (the printer is factory network enabled), all I need to do is just connect an ethernet cable to the printer and the other end to my router.
I installed the driver etc... and when I try to follow the manual that came with the printer, the PC would not detact the printer and thus the setup would end there.
The error that pops-up is either:
-> 'A port is not installed. Install a port'
or
-> 'Install a port.'
What does that mean, 'Install a Port.'???
I have tried to contact Canon to help me but to no avail, they were not able to solve my problem!!!
I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit and the Wireless router that I am trying to connect the printer to is a Belkin N1 Vision.
Hope you could help me.

BSOD for XP SP3 install on Raid 1 configured system.
Just built a new system for my teenage son about a month ago, running XP pro for gaming. I set it up for Raid 1 mirroring, running in SLI mode. I had all the latest updates and drivers installed, it was running great with no problems. Then came along Microsoft Priority Update XP SP3. I thought that I may see some advantage to installing, I was wrong! What I got was the dreaded (Blue Screen of Death) at Windows boot and continual restarts. No way to recover, no matter what I tried. The system would dump at boot in normal mode, in safe mode, tried to repair the OS, you name it..
I Could not uninstall SP3...
I was lucky, we didn't loose anything important. Files were backed-up, but my only choice was to do a clean install of the OS. The only way I could get it to work was to download the SP3 update to a flash-drive on a different computer, then I transferred the SP3 download file to my son's computer. I installed SP3 right after a clean install of the OS and before installing any drivers or software.
I have no idea what the problem was that caused the system to dump in the first place or after trying it again from Microsoft Auto Updates a second time, after installing only required drivers. I would bet that I'm not the only one to deal with this problem. I recommend that you download SP3 from the Microsoft download page, then install. Do not use Microsoft Automatic Updates, or just don't install until the major issues get resolved. I hope this helps..
After getting the system up and going with SP3, I can say that there are some improvements. I would suspect that the biggest advantage would be a more stable OS, not unlike XP Pro 64bit. I only wish that XP Pro 64bit had the same support as 32bit!!! I've tried Vista, not impressed with what I saw as far as 32bit install. I'm going to give it a try on my 64bit system next, with a full 8GB of RAM.

Dell AIO 942"Communication Not Available" or "DLBUJSWX.EXE" Error after downloading updated driver from Microsoft
If you downloaded the updated driver for your Dell All-in-One 942 Printer from Microsoft and are recieving these or other errors or your 942 just wont work try the following:
This is from the Dell Support Forum. I make no guarantees since I have not tried this on my customers PC yet. Many users from the Dell forum say it worked.
1. go to http://support.dell.com
2. Choose Option 2, "Get Product Support"
3. Choose "Select Model"
4. Choose "Printers"
5. Choose "Printer"
6. Choose "924 (Photo All-in-One)"
7. Click "Comfirm"
8. Choose "Drivers and Downloads"
9. Next to "Operating System" choose "Windows Vista 32-bit"
- it does not matter if you don't have vista, this is a clean up tool and it would run on xp or vista
10.When the page refreshes click on the "+" next to printers which is below the "Product Model Options" fields
11. Choose "Dell Patch/Upgrade"
12. Then click on "166243.zip" under "Hard-drive"
13. Scroll down to "Custom Instructions for R166243.zip:" and follow the procedure.
I've learned my lesson; Never ever download hardware drivers from Microsoft. Go directly to the manufacturers website to update any hardware drivers!

Solution: Opening Web Folders Problem on Vista
Hi, I've readed some many problems with webfolders on Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7. The most common one is when you map a network drive, Vista doesn't prompt for your user credentials and it ends showing us an empty folder.
In Windows XP the only thing we had to to is enter the Webfolder URL like this:
But in order this to work on Vista you always must type:
http://username@www.microsoft.com
And now Vista is going to ask for your credentials and you will ge to see your WebFolder.
Note: this only works when you use the option "map a network drive"->Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures. It does not work from IE7->File->Open->Open as webfolder
This works on Vista SP1. If you haven't appy this SP, you may run into a more problems.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Steady State Wish List Item
We have a group of machines set up for children's games in a public library. Steady State works great to keep the machines the way we set them up. However, one feature that would save us hours of headaches is to add a "hot-key" sequence that would allow the us to reboot and save settings made to the normal user profile while logged on as the normal user. We have a handful of games that need to be tweaked after being installed by an admin. This tweaking needs to be done while the normal user is logged on. Of course, we can't save the settings because the normal user does not have admin rights. Our security configuration requires that the normal user be just that.... a standard user with the basic rights.
Reply:
Thank you for the feedback regarding SteadyState functions. I also agree that the function you need will also be convenient for other SteadyState users. I have forwarded this to our product group. Thank you.
------------------------------------
Reply:
I agree. A hotkey feature or perhaps a task tray icon that you can click, and select for it to 'save settings for 1 reboot' or whatever, after entering an admin password. This would save time by not having to swap profiles several times to make 1 change.
Also, if Windows Disk Protection could institute a feature where the Admin can select a specific program and tell it to save any and all changes made by that particular piece of software, that would be awesomely helpful.
That way I can apply a software update to a particular piece of software and SteadyState will save the updates to that software even when it restores windows back. It will keep all the updates and registry changes associated with that particular piece of software.

Always the same problems
Hi everybody...
Like everyones here, I've got a problem with my video card...
"intel 82852" on a Latitude D400 from Dell...
Vista works great but no Windows aero... Why? Because my video card's driver is not up to date...
When Microsoft and Intel will move their *** to make windows work on the old (XP design) computer?...
If somebody have the answer, please, say!!!

Not all 82852 are going to work. They list the version numbers.
Aero requires a certain amount of video memory. Can you increase your video memory in the bios?
Hope this helps!
Ps. Vista has a new speedbooster technology that allow you to plug in a USB 2.0 HIgh Speed Flash drive and use it as system memory.Requires 512MB or larger and must be 40X High Speed. You can buy a 2GB for under $35. This is a great way to add memory and speed to a laptop.

SFT Explorer and sft-check updated
Hello all,
I have just recently updated my SFT Explorer application to version 1.4, nothing major in it besides bug fixes so in that sense I urge to upgrade if you happen to use this particular tool. Download it from here: http://www.virtualapp.net/sft-explorer.html
Another update just today was into sft-check tool that has too long stayed without enhancements, now it's able to handle 4.5 packages and also as a new feature outputs virtual registry and virtual services. Download it from here: http://www.virtualapp.net/sft-check.html
Thanks and I hope you all continue to find these useful!

Device wipe with NAT T
It's been said that device wipe will not work with NAT in place, as the alerter needs to come from a specific ip address before the device will acknowledge it.
For those of you who need to use NAT (Pretty much every environment i've seen so far!) And still need device wipe. We can utilise exchange's device wipe features (Assuming active sync is used in your organisation).
Using the powershell scripting in 2007 its possible to script up a device wipe from exchange, and even automate the process
It sucks that it is not integrated into the MDM system. But if you absolutely need more instant device wipe, You could potentially setup a power shell script, linked to some user input where you could enter a username, and fire off a wipe through active sync. You would then need to do the manual device cleanup process, but this can be automated in some way as well.
Reply:
The nat'd address looks to the client like it's coming from a spoofed host so it functions as designed and drops the packet. This means the Alerter mechanism won't work with the consequence that Wipe Now also won't work as desired.
What will still work is "Wipe on next connect".
It's important to make a distinction to make beween the options.
Wipe now isn't broken, it's just working (or not, as the case may be) as it's supposed to. Wiping (via Wipe On Next Connect) is still there.
No need to go down the Exchange route at all - unless Exchange has a more immediate wipe capability akin to Wipe Now. Not sure if it does.

But maybe can we reduce the "next connect" frequency in less than one hour ?

As long as the wipe is IP-based there will always be a possibility that it will not get executed right away whether you're initiating it from Exchange or MDM.
There are other third-party solutions that provide remote wipe through SMS, and this will provide a more instant wipe experience in most cases, but then there are other limitations to the SMS technology...

Close. It's not that device wipe won't work, it's a bit more subtle than that.

Sorry, I had alluded to the fact that it still works in my post, " But if you absolutely need more instant device wipe," sorry it wasn't clear enough. The whole detailed wipe mechanism would be a bit redundant if it didnt work.
And yes, in my experience Exchange can be much more responsive in wiping.

Exchange backup failure with Backup Exec 11D relating to VSS Writers in failed state
We've had this issue a few times - Backup Exec job fails with an error regarding the volume shadow writer errors - and we can see that when we run vssadmin from the cmd prompt that several writers have 'fallen over' specifically Exchange related ones. We have tracked the cause (we think) down to a disk space issue - we are using SBS 2003 with a 25 GB c: partition.
The behaviour we are seeing is that when the c: partition available space falls below 1 GB we see the backup job failure occur more readily. Now having looked into this issue, it appears that at least 300 MB per backup job is required (not 100 MB as listed by Symantec) and it would make sense that other concurrent Windows requirements; paging etc; would already account for much of the remaining free space - my guess is that (when below the 1 GB threshold) the vss writers attempt to build in a temporary area of disk that is not available and the job falls over.
The implications for us are not critical as we only run 1 job - but if you had multiple backups to one media server then you can basically multiply the amount of free space (not normally an issue for most but some of us do like to keep the windows partition small for rapid recovery purposes) by the amount of jobs.
I'm only putting this issue together in pieces so I would of course appreciate your opinions - we find that making disk space available and running a quick restart resolves the issue - however this fix isn't sufficient for those running 24-7-365 mission critical systems.
Reply:
Ronan,
We also saw this issue happening. We called symantec about it and they suggested to turn of the Advanced Open File Option. We switched it of and after that we haven't got the issues anymore. Another issue is that if you switch on specific parameters in Backup Exec it will create IMG file instead of normal backup files. These IMG files/folders will not be deleted automaticly but only will be deleted if there is no free space left on the disk to which you make a backup.
There is a KB article about it from Symantec which suggests to put the IMG folders on another partition to prevent normal backups from failing because to less free space.

Johan

Hi Johan,
Many thanks for the feedback - it's certainly an odd issue for sure. We still have the AOFO enabled and set to automatic, however I did disabled the 'Process logical volumes for backup one at a time' which was a recommendation I had found on an online forum and this seems to have (along with the free disk space) fixed the issue. More information on the specifics of this fucntionality and its interaction with the OS, shadow writers and actual data - perhaps a white paper from Symantec - would be great!
Kind Regards
Ronan
