White Icons and White Background

White Icons and White Background

Barley any contrast. Impossible to see. Impossible to adjust background color or icon color.

In Personalize/Theme, there is a way to choose a high contrast theme. Another workaround available, if you want a white background, might be to add 'drop shadows' to the Effects.

I noticed this immediately as well, and submitted feedback about it.  You are not going to get an instantaneus response or fix, either here or through feedback, thats not what they are there for.

Being that it is so blatantly obvious though, they will probably change the icons a bit before release.  Until then, submit your feedback and let them know.

Application Compatibility Wizard

When the App Compatibility (AC) Wizard is used, after asking whether it is to use Vista, XP etc compatibility mode, it then starts the installer file for the application (which starts up behind the AC window) and the AC wizard then asks whether the install worked and whether to save details etc.  If this final AC wizard screen is actioned before the application installer gets going it seems that AC mode is not applied to the install - I have to leave the AC wizard window open until the install is finished then Save details etc.  Perhaps I am getting problems with this because I am running an old 1.8Ghz computer and it is quite slow at analysing setup files etc.

My problems with this?
1.  It is not clear from information on the AC wizard that I should wait until the install is finished (or at least well under way) before completing the AC wizard.
2.  The AC wizard always seems to hide the installer window (I know that it is visible on the task bar) - I think that the installer window should come up front when it starts, then the AC completion window should pop up after the install is finished.

Restriction on div width from beta 2 breaks some websites

If Microsoft don't read this, can someone on the inside please forward this urgently to the development team, thanks.

In IE8 Beta 1 this wasn't an issue, but now since Beta 2, there seems to have been an arbitrary and seemingly pointless limit placed on the width of divs, which breaks some websites that use a uniquely wide div, that scrolls within a shorter one.

E.g. if you go to this page in IE7, IE8 b1, or Firefox, you will find you can move the strollbar all the way to the right, and will end up at the shop 'Silverscreen'.

In IE8 b2 however, the div is cut short at the shop 'Office'.

Compatibility view strangely has no impact here, even though the code of that site is set to action it.

If MS are going to impose restrictions, they should remove the restriction at the very least in compatibility view, if not altogether.

There are other websites that use similar techniques that are also broken in Beta 2.  I can see no way for the websites to recover, other than a complete recode from the bottom up using an entirely different method than divs, at the cost of thousands of dollars.  Either that or MS remove the limit on divs, which would cost about $1.
Thanks, CJSnet

Folders in "Libraries" don't have individual window settings (sort order, etc)

In a Library view, if you change the sort order of a folder (ie sort by date modified instead of by name) it applies that setting globally to all windows in that Library.

This is in contrast to browsing in "real" folders, each individual folder "saves" its window setting.

WMP12 - Improvements ?

Hi, I've tried to use WMP12 to see some movies and DVD's.

First problem was for me the fact that the "Now Playing" tab has dissapeared ad when swapping from WMP library to Now Playing I get separate Window - different size - depending on video. It's just a little bit annoying. And also a little bit dificult to see the properties of the playing file - have to go to Library windows, the Now Playing is closing to select File - Properties ( just an example ), then going back to movie. Probably re-adding the Now Playing in the same window it's better.

A good thing was that I didn't need to install any codec for the files I've tried to play. But there are some small problems. Your codecs uses a little to much the processor than Cyberlink as example. If I want to look to an m2ts file ( AVCHD ) in Cyberlink I get 50-90 % processor usage. In WMP12 with original codecs I get 85-100 % and there are some problems with the sound ( distorted ) when processor get 100%.

Also is good to play m2ts files - AVCHD, but perhaps it will be better to recognize AVCHD DVD's directly when inserted and playing them using their menu, instead to navigate to files with explorer and run them one by one... :(

Reply:
I had the same slower performance using the included codecs, so while it was a nice bonus that they were there, I don't think I would keep them.  Installing something along the lines of CCCP worked for me, its fully supported in Windows 7 and took the choppyness out of my videos.

Creative ImLive!

I was trying to find drivers for my Creative Webcam last night, so I googled Vista Creative ImLive! drivers, or something similar. I'll be honest, the drivers site that I downloaded seemed shady, with all of the free offers for things that I had to skip just in order to register and download 1 driver, but I did it anyway. So I installed the driver, and my webcam was working just fine. The problem didn't arise until I went to bed. While laying in bed trying to sleep, I noticed what sounded like my computer starting up. All the fans were on high for a few seconds, including my video card fan, which is a high buzz given the size of the fan. After a few seconds, the fans slowed back down, and the computer came out of sleep mode. I glanced over at the screen, figuring it restarted, but the webpages that I had left up, as well as digsby were still running. I found it odd, but rolled over and went back to sleep. This then happened probably...5 more times throughout the night, every hour or two.

When I woke up for work, I went over to check on my computer, and my mouse was frozen, keyboard also. When I hit caps lock, it would turn on, but not until seconds later. The light on my webcam was also off, so it didn't recognize a connection. I unplugged the 3 (all USB), and plugged back in only the keyboard and mouse and they both worked again. I tried to check in device manager for the webcam drivers and uninstall them, but I was in a rush for work, so I didn't have time. I didn't see them in the list at all after a quick glance, but I may have just missed them.

I guess my main question is, what do you guys think would be the cause of this problem? Is it a coincidence that I just installed my webcam last night? Would it be a driver issue? I know Windows 7 would always be an option too, since it's in beta, but I've been running it for a few days without a problem like this.

Reply:
This definitely sounds like a issue with those drivers.  Sounds like there was some running processes from teh driver or them trying to do something that has caused this issue.  Did it go away once the drivers were uninstalled?

alright just got a solution for the problem, it came up in the action center when I sent the problem report to MS

Solve a problem with Windows 7 beta

An issue with the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) client in Windows 7 beta is causing Explorer and some MSI-based installers to stop working properly.

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

  2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. In the User Account Control window, verify that Program name is Windows Command Processor, and then click Yes.

  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type or paste the following text at the prompt:

    reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

  4. Press Enter to install the solution.

  5. If The operation completed successfully displays, close the Administrator: Command Prompt window to complete this procedure. If "ERROR: Access is denied" displays, repeat this procedure from the top, making sure you clicked Run as administrator in step two.

Not sure if this is in the right thread but I'll give it a shot.  I've successfully installed the device manager and whatnot on Win7, synced my phone (AT&T Tilt, WM 6.1).
Heres my prob:
When I plug in my phone, the time advances 2 hours, and I believe it erased all my contacts (not able to test the contacts till I sync at work and get my llist back).  I've unplugged and changed the time back but it still advances.  I've checked everything I can think of for time and unchecked all the syncing options so that no files, contacts, appointments, ect are synced.  What am I missing

EDIT:
I'm running Office 2007, I'm not that familiar with outlook, use it basically as a back up for contacts in case I have to hard reset phone.  So if the problem is there and isn't out in the open, I probably missed it.

Thanks!!!

Geekbench Score: Native W7 vs VMWare XP - HUGE Performance Gap

So I run XP in VMWare for some of my needs. I decided to see how much the performance degraded. To my surprise, it got a higher score than the native W7 I use as my primary OS.

Here are the scores:

XP (3 runs)
2947
1964
2625

W7 (4 runs)
1223
1211
1244
1218

I had benchmarked the native install of XP before I installed W7 and the score was 1256, which is close enough to the W7 scores.

If you want to look at the scores in detail.
lowest W7 score
http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/103703

highest VMware XP score
http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/103703

Integer Performance is Identical.

Huge performance increase for XP in floating point, due to LU decomposition performance. Everything else is the same.

XP
LU Decomposition
single-threaded scalar 15371
13.7 Gflops

W7
LU Decomposition
single-threaded scalar 1347
1.20 Gflops

XP
LU Decomposition
multi-threaded scalar 34028
29.8 Gflops

W7
LU Decomposition
multi-threaded scalar 1366
1.20 Gflops

Memory performance is the same.

Again, huge performance increase for XP in Stream Performance.

Can anyone explain this difference? Is this because of how Vmware works, or is it something in the benchmarker itself?

Could be both or it could be could be that you are using different drivers in XP\Windows 7.
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/104767

I dont think benchmarking diffent OS's in a VM is that conclusive..

------------------------------------
Reply:
I think it must be pretty pointless benchmarking W7 at this stage.  It must be packed with debug hooks, instrumentation, beta quality drivers and so forth.

XP, on the other hand, has had several years of ongoing refinement.

I would imagine W7 will benchmark much better when it's released to manufacturing.

Windows 7 64-bit crash

Hoping someone can help.

I've installed Windows 7 64-bit on a compaq presario laptop.

It has a dual-core 64bit AMD processor.

I've run through the install with no problems, (although when it went to 'installing features' it essentially highlighted it for 2 seconds then skipped but said 100%).

The install completes, it reboots and as the smallest parts of the animated windows logo shows (it looks like a dot) it freezes, flashes a BSOD and reboots automatically.

I've tried going through the various options of booting (safe mode, etc) and have tired doing a repair with the windows 7 dvd but nothing has been able to fix this.

The BSOD flashes so fast i don't get a chance to read it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Reply:
To see the BSOD screen, right click on Computer then properties and select advanced system settings. Then select "settings" under Startup and Recovery and uncheck "Automatically restart". This should at least let you see what is causing the BSOD.

Edit: I guess I missed that you are unable to get into the operating system even with safe mode. In the same screen that allows entry into safe mode, there is a setting that keeps from restarting on error.

If i could see the message i could probably look it up on technet or something :(

Hope i can work this out, as i want to set up windows 7 as a work environment for testing and feedback...

Cannot kill SOME programs from within task manager

I am having compatibility problems with StorageCraft's ShadowProtect Desktop.  It will run sometimes, but after one or two backups after a reboot, the program locks up.  It seems to lose its connection to the local server.  It is compounded by not being able to kill the processes or restart the services from the Task Manager or Services Manager respectively.

Other programs exhibit the same pattern.  CPU usage is quite low, so it is not that the CPU is being overloaded.  I have tried it with UAC on or off or in various shades of lowered protection via the slider.

A strange error appears in the event viewer that I believe is the culpret, though I do not know how to correct it and I do not, as far as I know, use IPv6 which seems to be the "cause" of this error:
