Win7 X64 internet access but no update service, please help me.

Win7 X64 internet access but no update service, please help me.

Please help me, I have tried everything. I installed Win7 x64 on a fresh drive. Once installed, I could browse the internet but applications that required the internet couldn't. These applications were Windows update, which couldn't check for updates, Norton360 , with the same problem, and the Live installer couldn't download installation files. You can download files from internet explorer but not from an application. I decided to try update the drivers manually to fix the problem but the device manager can't use the net. I went to Microsofts driver catalogue site but it uses a program to download drivers, it doesn't download direct from explorer so had the same problem. I reinstalled but didn't install anything this time, not even norton and had the same problems again. At this point I didn't know what else to try, I thought that if I upgraded my existing Vista x64, then it should use the existing drivers and maybe fix the problem. That was very foolish as now I have no operational O/S as it has the same problem as the previous installs.

I read a post of someone that couldn't update on this site, he said he fixed it by reconfiguring his DSL, I have a ADSL router, and it is connected to my pc via ethernet, so this isn't possible on my machine (unless I misunderstood), I don't know if he had internet anyway, his discription wasn't all that in depth.

Please help me, I will try anything at this point.

I am going to try the x86 version see if thats the same, I will update this post at that point, but I will still have a x64 installed so please do reply.

Thanks, Phill.

I would think it was the Norton 360 Firewall doing that.

Thanks for your reply, but no, as stated, I installed it again without installing anything but windows, and the same thing happened. I have since writing the post, installed the x86 version and that behaves in the same manner.

You've probably checked this already, but I'll ask anyway... as far as 'Windows' services, do you have BITS and Automatic updates turned on?

Also, have you checked your IE settings to make sure that there isn't some setting which is preventing you from downloading ?

Just a few random thoughts... sorry if they are not helpful.

Win7b prefab VHD - an idea?

I've just surfed the pages surrounding this one, and came by one offering various downloadable VirtualHardDisks containing demo-software like e.g. Vista 30-day-trial. Great idea, now that .iso-based distribution of the Win7 beta seems to be troubled.

So why don't the nice folks at MS do one of those? A VHD containing a prefab version of Win7b, ready to be run with VPC2007. Assuming the VHDs don't have the hardware dependencies plaguing Win7b, this would at least get us (meaning me, a casual shopper) to the user interface experience...

I know this doesn't teach the devteam much about the bugs in W7b, but for all the casual shoppers out there this would be a real treat. And IMHO people not being casual shoppers will use the iso-based install anyway, providing the devteam with proper info for bughunting.

Usable idea?

Hi

I think this is not good idea, because people cannot evaluate anything if OS runs on virtual machine, for real run they will need different drivers, they will have different problems, they will get different performance.

------------------------------------
Reply:
But of course :)

This is not to support the release-cycle process. But lots of people want to see the upcoming edition in action, merely to satisfy their curiousness. Distributing a VHD image would provide an easy one-stop-shopping experience.

In case you haven't noticed, the good folks in the Linux-camp have managed to create Live-CDs for people to try out new releases. MS appears to believe this is not a good idea, for some reason. So - observing that LiveCDs are very popular for tryout-purposes - we could benefit from something similar.

Enter prefab VHD.

Actually - running a demo in a virtual machine would provide for an even more polished experience, since the VM hides any and all hardware-related issues. If the VM installs OK, the Win7 demo will work!

Remember; this approach is targeted at casual shoppers - not tech-savvy hackers (in the original positive sense of that word; not crackers, phreaks etc.) accustomed to dealing with technical issues. Casual shoppers just want to see what it's all about. Now!

So - your reply has had the effect of convincing me even more that this is a good idea. Catering for casual shoppers only, of course :)

Reply:
No idea is very bad :)

Peoples will have different experience on virtual machine!

At least aero will not work! 3D too. What will see end users then? Something like Windows 95 :)

So "casual shoppers" that want to see what it is, will see what it is not :)

Virtual machine is for use by developer or other professionals, but not by end users!

Sorry but this is the true

Obviously you have "caught" from some company that makes virtual machines, so they have acomplished their goal :)

------------------------------------
Reply:
You've got a point there.

Of course the casual shopper has to be able to see 'everything there is' - that means the full GUI; Aero.

So, why doesn't Microsoft see to it that aero is runnable on their VM? That would kinda solve the issue, right? I mean - they are holding both ends of the rope here...

And as far as VM usage is related, i've seen several VMware runtimes distributed for - end user tryout-purpose. VMware has a freely downloadable 'Player' aimed at that specific scenario. Guess why?

And yes - of course i've listened to the sounds coming from VM vendors. Some of them occasionally say "Click here to buy", which causes me to instantly stop listening and move on to another and friendlier vendor. VM's are getting better all the time. More IO. Better graphics support. Lower overhead. Smaller - if any - price tag.
Latest interesting subject with real potential is Xen, but afaik also VMware supports both OpenGL and DirectX - that should suffice for getting Aero going, right? Which brings us back to Microsoft holding both ends of the rope - W7 and VirtualPC...

Of course it would be fun if they did a VMware-based VHD and linked to VMwares player. Actually; hilarious...

if you restrict usb sticks with grouppolicy and you use a HP Officejet H470 Printer with CardReader and USB connection you can use the sticks over this printer usb connection!

Abnormal explorer.exe behaviour

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but I've noticed some abnormal behaviour by explorer.exe. This is a result of trying to find a fix for the fact that explorer.exe gobbles up a huge amount of system resources when using the Search function (search is unusable on my machine).

As I've posted in the thread explorer.exe resumed normal behaviour after killing and starting it in the Task Manager. This used to work fine on XP, but after rebooting I noticed that a few of the icons in the System Tray were suddenly hidden. When I opened Customize notification icons to restore the icons to their former glory I noticed that the entire list was reset to its default value! It only showed the few system icons and none of the applications I had installed so far.

While this inadvertently led to a fix for another thread (Notification Icon list problem) I'm still looking around if other parts of my installation weren't affected as well. Has anybody experienced the same behaviour after restarting explorer.exe manually? Has this problem perhaps been reported before and is there a (partial) list of the side effects?

I see a lot of virus affected machines, people give them to me when they stop working (or they upgrade) I was on the lookout for this. You gotta admit it's funny, they target your virus checker first and change the settings or worse they use it everytime you run it to do more damage. I saw signs that something I wasn't running would run and I noticed the narrator was speaking the code for the windows "open narrator, child zero "
I thought something was up when I had to switch defender on sometimes and not others.

drive security settings

 Hi everyone !

I'd like to talk about an issue i encountered today - i've got a workaround but i'm guessing there's another, direct way. Here it goes:

I have a Intel quadcore system with Winsows Vista Enterprise installed on it. The hdd has two partitions: C & D. I have played around with the security settings on drive D, messing everything up and removing permissions to everyone but me/my user).
For some reason, even though i theoretically had ntfs permissions, i couldn't access the drive, no matter what I did.
Tried accessing it with local admin credentials; tried running chkdsk from an elevated command prompt - nothing.
Tried connecting the hdd to another Vista Ent machine - same thing - couldn't access the drive, couldn't take owenership on anything. I couldn't even see what files/folders were on it. I had no Security tab from either Vista machine.
The workaround I found was to connect the hdd to an XP Pro machine and took ownership on everything & re-set the drive permissions.

My question would be: is there a way to solve such problems via Vista ?

Ricoh with Xps 1530m

Problems with the card reader, when i insert a MS don't function.

Dual Booting on Two Seperate Drives

Is it at all possible to dual boot Windows 7 x64 and Windows Vista x64. I tried dual booting but only Vista will load. If I do a repair it will show the dual boot menu but Vista says (recovered) but once I go into vista or 7 that menu is gone.

Also, if I have noticed something funny. When I had the two drives connected and I had Vista x64 install disc in teh drive it would load Vista, and vice versa with Windows 7.

If anyone knows a way to dual boot 7 and Vista WITHOUT shrinking the drive to make a partition for 7. I have a Velociraptor 300 so space is limited. I want to install on two seperate drives. Right now I have to shut down my PC, plug/unplug HDD's to dual boot.

Thanks in advance and any info is greatly appreciated.

Silverado, If you don't mind, I would like to piggy-back onto your topic as I'm having a similar issue only I'm trying to load XP on the second drive.

I currently have & installed on my primary hard drive windows 7 and need to install XP on the second hard drive.  Problem is when I'm trying to install XP, I get the BSOD during the initial phase of the install (before any prompts come up) and yes, I tried both my back up and original XP disks.

Thanks in advance

Let's say that you have 2 Hard drives installed in your computer.  Also, Vista is installed on the 1st Hard Drive.

I have to assume that you have copied the ISO image to  disk. Reboot from the Windows 7 DVD, and select Custom install after the usual rigmarole. Pick the 2nd Hard drive to install on, from the 2 choices. The install will continue, and dual boot will be setup by itself, so that when you finally have Windows 7 installed with Vista on the other Drive, when you start your computer, you will be offered Windows or Vista to boot into. Use UP or dOWN arrow to select, hit ENTER, and away you go.

Above is how you do it from scratch.

If you let it install by itself, no Custom Install selection, it will overwrite the Vista install.

Hi

If you want dual boot the easiest way is to use easybcd free tool to add entries in boot menu for all available OS you have installed

EasyBCD can do the job from any OS it is installed on

Of course you can do the same manually by using bcdedit tool that cames with windows, but I doubt you know how to use it :)

------------------------------------
Reply:
Going to try EasyBCD and see. Don't understand why it just wont create the dual boot menu automatically when you install Windows .

Also, what about setting drive numbers. I would like both Vista and 7 to have C:\

I tried EasyBCD and what I did was add a entry and I used Windows Vista for Windows 7 since 7 isn't an option. I then told EasyBCD what drive Windows 7 is on and saved. I rebooted and no menu. I went back into EasyBCD and it was Windows 7 on drive U:/ and its on drive J:/ matter a fact I dont even have a drive U on my system. I tried several times with no luck.

Ventsislay Alexandriyski could you please explain to us how to do this.

Thanks

Ok

I need to check what shows easybcd because I have not used it a long time, but I think there was some issue like yours, I think caused by different mapping of drives in different OS.
Now I am watching TV , so I will check this few minutes later and will give you some clue

If you have not dual boot menu created by 7 install then both of your OS have different boot loaders installed and you can switch which one to run by changing HDD boot order.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I did the same thing as you, installing Win 7 on  separate drive ( because i was concerned that I might mess up my original OS installation..XP MCE) and the way I have to boot into Windows 7 is...  when the start screen comes up ( all that Memory test and IDE Drive thing) I press F12 until the boot menu comes up. Then I select Hard Disk, and it offers me a choice of my 2 drives. I just coose my second drive and Voila!  Win 7 loads.
I have since loaded onto a partition on another computer and that worked too. But my main system is 2 HDD and that's how I do it. A bit of a pain, but no biggy.
As for loading onto a second drive...  I have 2 SATA drives so to be super careful, I disconnected my main drive while I installed the Win 7 OS, and I had only one choice of drives to choose from. Then when installed, I just reconnected my main drive.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I cannot simulate your case on my system, but I suppose if easybcd is not added new boot menu entry, then this is because it edits second boot menu, that is currently inactive, because of HDD boot order.
Check HDD boot order from BIOS boot options and see what happen
Change HDD boot priority to see second boot menu

Reply:
You guys are missing out on the absolutely easiest foolproof way to dual boot without messing around with different boot manager menus.  If you have a modern BIOS that allows you to select which drive to boot from, the following method works flawlessly.

1) Remove all drives but one.  Install OS #1 (and nothing else) on this disk
2) Pull this drive #1 out
3) Insert drive #2
4) Install OS #2 (and nothing else) on this disk
5) Arrange drives and your BIOS settings so that whatever OS you want to default to is set as the main drive.
6) Now with both drives in your system, when you boot, your main OS will just boot.
7) When it is time to try the other OS, hit the BIOS menu item from the main screen that allows you to select a drive to boot to.  I'm not talking about the one that is buried deep in the BIOS settings menu - this is a selection that lets you boot from USB drives, CDROMs, network, whatever you like, but does not change your default boot drive.
8) The BIOS sets everything up so the bootloader has no problems loading from what might be your secondary drive.  Also, Windows will call whatever drive you initially set up on C: even though this drive is no longer the primary drive.  It all just works like magic, baby!
9) When it is time to go back to the other OS, just reboot, no need to select any menus this time, because this is your default boot.

I've done this with my WinXP and Win7 setup and it is magic.  Not one second wasted messing around with obscure BCDEDIT command lines.  Frickin' AWESOME!

------------------------------------
Reply:
Oh, forgot to mention another benefit.  In both cases, Windows comes up calling the drive it installed on C:

So the 2 OSes are not aware of eachother (i's not a dual boot) and you have 2 active (boot) partitions which means BIOS will boot from the first one in the list unless you change boot order with F12......

Not to be pithy about it but... "when the start screen comes up ( all that Memory test and IDE Drive thing) I press F12 until the boot menu comes up. Then I select Hard Disk, and it offers me a choice of my 2 drives. I just choose my second drive and Voila!  Win 7 loads." was included in the post.
And yes, technically I don't have an XP-Win 7 "dual boot".
On hdd0 I have a "dual boot" of XP and Ubuntu 8.10.(which I neglected to mention because it wasn't relevant to my point)
On hdd1 I have a single boot of Windows 7.

So I guess I do in fact have a dual boot in there somewhere, but I was just trying to show that, if you have the hardware, there is an easy, sort of trouble free way to have access to two separate operating systems on one machine, without the partitioning and whatnot, for people who are slightly technically challenged like me.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Ok then boot in w7 and run easybcd from w7 and add entry for XP

After that you will habe dual boot menu and will be noe necessary to press F12 each time

Bug report - taskbar resizing fails

Here is the sequence:

* Start with taskbar "locked"
* not auto-hide
* not use small icons
* taskbar location left of screen
* taskbar buttons 'Always combine, hide labels'
* use desktop preview

Change Taskbar buttons dropdown to 'Never combine' and click Apply
- taskbar grows horizontally to accommodate labels

Change Taskbar buttons dropdown to 'Always combine, hide labels' and click Apply
- taskbar labels disappear but taskbar stays too wide - BUG

Only cure is to unlock the taskbar and manually resize to the minimum again.

Aero and MDI applications

It seems as though MDI (multiple document interface) applications are not able to take advantage of the Aero theme even if it is enabled.

Screenshot

As you can see from the screenshot above, Aero is enabled but the MDI application Paint Shop Pro is using the basic vista theme for its open documents.

I'm not sure if this typical or expected behavior, but it's inconsistent and ugly.

I'm not sure if Photoshop has this same problem with the Aero theme -- can anyone confirm this?

Furthermore, the default vista colors (light blue) are distracting when working with images, which is why Paint Shop Pro moved to a solid mid-tone gray (rgb 127,127,127) to keep the area surrounding the image as neutral as possible.

Is there something that developers can do to enable Aero in their MDI applications? If not, can the basic Vista theme it at least stay within the Aero color scheme? Thanks!

Reply:
The graphics processing for Aero is performed on the GPU rather than the CPU. This give better performance for the computer as a whole for most applications. However, when you are running a graphic-intesive application, a game or Photoshop for example (and probably most of the Corel Suite), the display theme will drop back to Vista Basic in order to free GPU cycles for the application. I would assume that is the behavior that you are seeing here.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I'm not sure if that's entirely true. Here is another screenshot with a very simple MDI application mIRC.

Screenshot 2

Again, the Aero theme is enabled everywhere except for the documents within the MDI application.

The tech behind glass and the drops shadows and other desktop compositing works at the level of top level windows. MDI child windows aren't top level so they don't get the corresponding decorations and fall back on the basic theme.

------------------------------------
Reply:
What's crazy about this is that the system should at least pick a color compatible with your aero-glass, like a grey.  For Microsoft to force every single MDI child window to use bright baby blue no matter what the aero-glass is insane.  I know Microsoft has moved away from MDI in all of their apps, but come on!  Not one MS software engineer every complained about this when using Win7?

I agree. The basic theme should look just like the glass theme but without the glass effect, drop shadows,  and the mouseover glow. Use the glass tinting color with a neutral background for the color.

It's been a long time since I looked at Border Manager but from memory it acts as a web proxy.  You mentioned that you installed the Novell Vista Client.  I believe there is a seperate client for the border manager product so you may need that to gain access to the internet.

I would have a look at a vista machine to see what clients are installed as well as any settings for internet connections such as proxy servers.

BIOS causing computer to OVERHEAT

Problem: After upgrading to Windows 7, my fan does not run.  (might be spinning but I can't hear the usual hum at all)  This causes my notebook to overheat to a point that my computer just shuts off.  Could Windows 7 be hindering my BIOS and temperature sensor from properly cooling my computer?

TS RemoteApp - Cannot create RemoteApp with apostrophe in executable filename

I've found what appears to be a bug in the TS RemoteApp Manager. I'm having a terrible time figuring out where to submit bug reports for Windows Server 2008, so I'll start by posting here but would welcome any suggestions on where else I should post this to get it fixed. (I've looked a "Connect", but it looks like I can only post feature requests there-- not bugs.)

To repro:

  • Copy an executable (in my case NOTEPAD.EXE) to a folder readable by TS RemoteApp Manager.
  • Rename the copied executable to include an apostrophe in the filename (in my case NOTEPAD'.EXE).
  • Start TS RemoteApp Manager. Select "Action" and "Add RemoteApp Program..."
  • Click "Next" on the first page of the wizard.
  • Click "Browse" and browse to the copy of the executable you made. Click "Next".
  • Click "Finish".

You will receive an error message as follows:

Title: RemoteApp Wizard
An error occurred while trying to add programs to the RemoteApp Programs list.
Please ensure that you have access to the terminal server. Error Code: 80070057

It looks like 0x80070057 is "E_INVALIDARG", per winerror.h, but I haven't attempted to track down what, exactly, is generating the 0x80070057. I'm sure it's something to do with escaping, or lack thereof, of the apostrophe character.

This is by design. TS RemoteApp Manager tool does not allow following characters in application names:
: * ? " < > | \ / '

Ajay,

Consider this an enhancement request, then.

I can find no documentation based on the error message I receive from the TS RemoteApp Manager that indicates that there are any illegal characters or what those illegal characters are. At the very least, there should be a knowledge-base article that explains the "by design"-ness of this behaviour. At the best, the product should display an error message that is actually helpful (and, perhaps, alert you to the use of illegal characters earlier in the "Wizard").

I'll put an entry on my blog-- at least there will be something for others to search for.

(I do find it a bit hard to believe that the behaviour is really "by design". I doubt there is a design specification at Microsoft that specifies this behavior. My guess is that it's one of those "it behaves this way as an artifact of implementation", as so many things are in commerical software.  *sigh*)

It's a single quote, which wasn't closed. Notice that double quote (") is also in the list.

Multiselect Item doesn't work!

 Hi all,

Can someone explain to me why if I select a single item in my excel navigation filter, I get the correct result, while, if I select multiple items, the filter doesn't work? (I'm using SSAS 2005 and Excel 2007)

I have no calculated measures!

I have found this post by our guru Mosha, but it seem to be related only to calculated measures and I don't have any one!

http://www.sqljunkies.com/WebLog/mosha/archive/2005/11/18/multiselect_friendly_mdx.aspx

Below the where condition taken from Profiler (this happens when I select for example 2 items):

SELECT SOMETHING
FROM
 (SELECT
 (
     {
     [Material].[Characteristics].[Value].&[DUE]&[SEI]&[DODICI]&[VENTI]&[Origin]&[Italy],
     [Material].[Characteristics].[Value].&[DUE]&[CINQUE]&[NOVE]&[VENTUNO]&[Production line]&[White]
     }
 )
  ON COLUMNS  FROM [Cube]
  )
   WHERE ([Measures].[Tons]

But, why SSAS engine doesn't use the following query that works fine?

SELECT SOMETHING

  FROM [Cube]
    WHERE
        (
        {
        [Material].[Characteristics].[Value].&[DUE]&[SEI]&[DODICI]&[VENTI]&[Origin]&[Italy],
        [Material].[Characteristics].[Value].&[DUE]&[CINQUE]&[NOVE]&[VENTUNO]&[Production line]&[White]
        }
        ,[Measures].[Tons]
        )

What should I do so that the filter works fine?

Thank you to all,

SimonP

I tried to create new calculations that use the EXISTING function, even if this solution can't work for me because I have about 40 measures, 10 dimension and I can't create so many calculation (moreover, I have 4 different fact table with about 20 million of rows for 2 of them!).

The solution works when I do a multiselection, but the Grand Total is not the grand total of the selected items, but the grand total of all items.

I tried to create a SCOPE statement that overwrite the total value, checking the currentmember, but without success!

Hi,

The grand total issue could be due to the fact you have the "included filtered items in total" option checked in the Pivot Table options.

By unselecting this option, you should get the visual total.

Dear Yongli,

thank you for your answer.

When you speak about "Included filtered items in total" (in Pivot Table Option) do you mean "Subtotal filtered page items" option?

Sorry but I can't find the option "Included filtered items in total" ...

The option "Subtotal filtered page items" isn't selectablly in my excel client, why?

I can read at the following link:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP100963171033.aspx

that the OLAP data source must support the MDX expression subselect syntax.

Can you explain me what does it mean?

Thank you,

SimonaP

 Hi,

I am using Vista, which might be the reason I saw different option in Excel.  I need to double check tomorrow.

If you are using AS2005, it should support MDX expression  subselect syntax, as a matter of fact, your MDX seems to use it.  Do you happen to have AS2000 somewhere, and your Excel might be configured to point to the old OLAP data source ?

Device Mgr exclamation for Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface

Hello all:

Just upgraded my Gateway GM5420 desktop to Windows 7 and I now cannot access the internet.  In the device manager I see that there is now an exclamation point next to the Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface network adapter.  The status says the device cannot start.

Any hints?

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

I doubt that's your actual network adapter, so you might want to try to install the network adapter drivers for your system.

Tried to reinstall my network adapters, but windows determined that I have the best drivers for it.  The Intel 82562V network connection is not showing any problems - just the teredo tunneling pseudo-interface.

Reply:
You will need to 'uninstall' the real network adapter device from the device manager Action menu, then 'scan for hardware changes.' The tunneling device will be removed and reinstalled right with it.
