Windows 7 and my WiFi

Windows 7 and my WiFi

I a using a dell 1330 intell proset wireless 3945abg. WiFi works fine when I boot with vista. It finds my network and connects in 7 but reads as an unidentified network and gives local access only.

My verizon broadband card wont install either. Any suggestions?

I have done the following:
Restart :)
uninstall and reinstall drivers (now the verizon software wont even install)
Turned off all sharing and restart (read that as a solution somewhere)
I can connect to my router and get online with an ethernet cable. (havent done that in a while)
right clicked on the .exe and went through the troublesoot compatabilty options.

over and over and over...

Windows 7 memory usage

Is or will (when the non-beta version of Windows 7 is released) the memory usage of Windows 7 be on par with that of other operating systems or will the resource requirements be increased from previous versions of Windows for example the memory usage that almost doubled from XP pro to Vista Home Basic.  (Other oprerating system: Ubuntu 8.10 kernel with KDE 4.1 GIU (350 MB (approx.)))

I don't know about the finished version, but I am currently running well on 2 gig of memory where Vista was a slug with 2 gig.
I also loaded Win 7 on a machine with a P4 1.5 GHz and 512 MB RAM and it ran about as well as the Ubuntu 8.10 on the same machine....
So, unless they mess it up with weird additions, I imagine that it will run with less resources.
I also have Win 7 64 on a laptop with 4 gig that dual boots with Vista 32, and the Win 7 is much more responsive on it.

That is good to know.  The problem is that it how when well will it perform on 2GB of RAM if more that 1.6GB of the memory is being used by other aplications? But then it should not be a problem if it is able to run on 512MB of RAM, it then only depends on how fast Windows can realocate the memory.

------------------------------------
Reply:

The amount of memory Windows 7 used depends on the amount of memory you have.

For example, on my laptop (Memory: 2 GB), Windows 7 will use around 1.0-1.4 GB, but on my netbook (Memory: 1 GB), Windows 7 will use 500-600 MB. It is because of the new technologies Microsoft designed. When you have a huge program to run, like a game, Windows will release some memory.

So, don't concentrate on the memory. However, according to the feedback of Windows 7 Beta, even an old pc can run perfectly.

I have 1.5 gigs of ram on an older machine and Windows 7 is running better than Vista business was running.  It is also using almost 10% less memory.  Only problem I have is the 128mb of memory on my graphics card.  Aero doesn't move as fluid as on my notebook.  So far I am impressed with the downscaling of memory usage.  The switch to Vista business from XP Pro killed my ram.

Running an e.e from a W2K3 share

We use a database which is based on OpenInsight, not a very common piece of software.  The way to install is to run a client from a mapped share, which is usually J:.  When I run the client it asks for the file location, which is an exe called openinsight.exe on the J: drive in the folder (J:\Live\openinsight.exe).  Under every version of Windows this hasn't been a problem but under Windows 7 the installer says that it cannot see openinsight.exe.

I can double-click on that exe and run the program, which is fine once it gets going.  Is there some sort of feature which prevents exe files being called when they're on network shares or something?  I have joined the machine to the domain and am using the domain admin user.

Can you use UNC paths with OpenInsight when the client asks for a file location?  For example: \\servername\Live\openinsight.exe.  Since UNC paths are persistent, they may make a better solution if your application allows their use.

Safe to run Windows 7 beta?

Sorry!! I am sure this has been addressed already but I can't find it. I want to try Windows 7 beta but I only have one computer and am concerned that a crash could really be disastrous and cause me to lose everything. So I really need to know the safety/risk factor in downloading and installing the Windows 7 beta. Also, if I did run it successfully, how would I keep from losing anything after August?

What I would recommend is to go out and get another hard drive and install Windows 7 on it with your primary drive disconnected.
This will allow you to test and all your data and programs will be safe on the other drive. When August comes, you will be able to use your current operating system and have a spare drive as well. Or you could clone your existing drive to another and install Windows 7 as an upgrade and then still have your existing drive safe.

I installed Windows 7 on a different hard drive . It is Beta and only good until August.  I have another HDD with Vista installed and all I have to do is put that back into my computer and off and running. I dont have to worry about Vista getting "hurt"  I keep my important info on Vista but still can test programs and such on Windows 7

Like Lead3 said, if you want to test out Windows 7 w/out losing anything, go out and get another hard drive and use that WITH YOUR PRESENT HARD DRIVE DISCONNECTED as so you don't inadvertently do something to your present working drive.

Since it sounds as if you would be in a bad state if you lost your information, you definitely need to take the proper precautions and adhere to established "best practices."

Windows Media Center No TV Signal

I have a Hauppauge WinTV 878/9 PCI tuner card (i know its an old card :) ).  I have video and audio when watching live TV but after a minute or 2 I loose video but still have audio.  Windows Media Center says "No Tv Signal".  Also the audio and video are not sync'd and after closing WMC the audio still plays.   I can watch live tv fine using Hauppauge's software AMCAP and the video and audio are in sync.  Any help/suggests would be great!  Thanks!  If more info is needed please ask.

I have both a Pinnacle 810 card and an Avermedia card.  Both work fine for OTA reception on Windows Vista.  Neither will receive a couple of channels using the beta of Windows 7.  OTA programming is from Green Bay WI.  I cannot receive channel 5 or channel 32.  I just get a blank screen followed by a message that there is no signal.
Interesting that I was able to fix this in Vista by applying the OEM pack which is supposedly already included in Windows 7.

Hi SlardyB:
I don't think that tuner card will work in Media Center.  You might possibly get it to work separately from Media Center using Hauppauge's own "WinTV application" which supported XP.  Even with that you might have to install it in XP compatibility mode.  Here is a url for a Hauppauge web page with info about drivers and the WinTV application if you want to check it out:

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_pci_878.html

If you have cable tv or a good selection of digital ATSC (over-the-air) channels you should definately consider getting a recent model tv tuner as they can display digital & HD channels using Win7.  That is if your other PC hardware is up to the task.  Good luck.

TV Static Taskbar and other visual anomalies.

Part question part discussion.

Today after 3 weeks of use, I saw my first fun Bug.  After I woke the computer up from sleep, the Taskbar, Titlebars and Windows Frames all appeared as TV Static.  I could not see the butons, and a few windows the Static appearance went beyond the usual frame of the window.  I have submitted feedback.

I had previously seen some stic like appearances when I returned from sleep on the wall paper, but that reolved itself as it was presumably changing scenes while going to sleep and windows changed the picture immediately after waking up.

Has anyone else experienced this and were there other performance issues as well?  This resolved itself for me with a restart, but we shall see tommorrow.

Mr. Database and Mrs. Application – The Wedding Vows

Mr. Database To Mrs. Application

  1. I do solemnly swear to love your validation. I will fully trust that you're passing me the correct datatypes and the lengths will never cause overflow exceptions.
  2. I do solemnly swear to honor your security. I will fully trust that you have encrypted all accounts in your config files and compensated for injection attacks so that my server is never vulnerable or compromised.
  3. I do solemnly swear to cherish your procedural optimizations that only an OOP environment can provide.

Mrs. Application To Mr. Database

  1. I do solemnly swear to love your set based environment. I will keep my procedural and conditional statements to myself so that you can focus on providing me with optimal results.
  2. I do solemnly swear to honor your engine. I will study your execution plans and adjust my querys accordingly until all indexes are being applied, table and index scans are converted to seeks, and your estimated row counts are accurate.
  3. I do solemnly swear to cherish your design by naturalizing my databases, properly choosing primary keys, create referential integrity, and forever search for new methods to avoid cursors.

Until Armageddon do us part!

Seriously folks. There is yet to be published a good critical thinking reference for the separation of programming roles. Yes you n-tier developers, you have defined layers but even with this strict design, much is left to be decided as to where the optimal adjustments should be made. Example 1: SQL Server can sort but carries a significant overhead to do so. OOP can also sort but will typically sort a smaller and more refined resultset. So should all sorting be done in OOP for performance reasons? Yes, yes, and almost always yes. Example 2: OOP can load and query large datatables in memory but SQL Server employs a query optimizer. Does that mean all querys should be run in the database engine and only return refined datasets? Yes, yes, and almost always yes.

While I could ramble on without endeavor, I would be interested to hear others thoughts on specifically 'where' the often applied methodologies might better benefit the overall designs through either relocation or redesign.

Although it's an obvious troll, Adam, I'll bite. Your vows are doomed to end in divorce. The database developer's mantra (and the application developer's mantra) should be "Trust, but verify."

Procedural optimizations, indeed. *snort* If that's the focus that most developers have, they need to find a new line of work. Premature optimization is the root of all evil (I think I'm paraphrasing Booch, but I might misremember).

Your vows, like most marriage vows are flawed, because they focus each individual on what the "other party" will do instead of what their duties are to the other party.

Also, I think you may have your genders backwards, but at the risk of being more non-PC than I've already been this week, I won't speculate further.

Clients on different subnet not recieveing distributed software

Hello,

We are running Configuration Manager 2007 SP1. We are using software dist. effectively on two subnets. We just deployed a new subnet (our 3rd) on our network, and all of the clients on the subnet are able to install the client and are reporting to the Management Point, but I cannot seem to distribute software to them. They recieve the advertisement and the reports say the clients are "waiting for content" until the advertisement eventually times out. I checked the cache folders on the non-working workstations, and the folder is created, but the content is not there. (we are downloading copies from the dist. point)

The subnet that is not working is routed through a VPN to a remote location. The subnets that we are effictively distributing software to are on site with the MP and Dist.

I have checked the logs, but can't seem to come up with anything substantial I can post anything requested.

Thanks for your help

Hi,
How did you configure the boundery in the remote subnet? The advertisment need to match the boundery type. So if it is configured as a remote boundery make sure the advertisement is configured to support client in slow or unreliable networks.

 Thanks for the replies,

First, I was somewhat unclear in my explanation. We have two AD sites, our default, and the remote site (which happens to be a distinct subnet as well). The default has two subnets(Distributing software correctly), and the remote has the new subnet(not distributing software).

In configuration manager, the boundaries are set by AD sites, and they both are set to fast. Under the protected tab, the default lists our DP as a protected system, while the new subnet has nothing protected. I am guessing the issue is that our DP IS protected against the new subnet/AD site. I will remove it and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

Nice tool but why didn't you finish it

Hi
I have used IBM's CDAT tool earlier for server performance data collection and had some problems with it. When I found out that MSFT had one I had high hopes and it really looks nice as well. I've used the tool recently on a customer and am now for the first time looking at the report. What I do not understand is how MSFT intend to use the data as guideline for sizing a virtualization host farm. I can get CPU and networking data with satisfactory detail. Disk counters can only give me total amount of alocated and utilized disk space. Why didn't you put in Bytes/Sec read and write??? and Why is there no Memory data?

Again I really like the tool but since it is missing essential counters I'm forced to spend time doing VB scripts my self to collect the missing stuff. Also I think it is essential to get information on peak values to uncover periods with much higher loads than average. For now I'm sorry to say it but IBM's tool has the information yours doesn't and although it's ugly it does the job.

Hope that you can find time to put in the missing counters soon, it schouldn't take you much time to do...

The disk I/O numbers are actually collected and used under the covers for the placement calculations, even though they're not surfaced in the perf reports.   We had so many columns of data in the disk perf section that we didn't display everything we collected in the report.

The placement model actually uses peak disk I/O and peak network I/O for placement; average is used for CPU utilization, since peak has a very high probability of always being 100%

We're adding the memory modeling now & will have that in the next version of the tool.  We're also looking at ways to allow users to specify aggregates other than peak & average, such as percentile (90th percentile, for example)

More information about how the tool works for placement calculation is available here:

Diagnostic approach for failed x64 upgrade?

Several attempts to upgrade a Vista Sp1 x64 system (Dell M90) have failed in the same fashion: the upgrade completes (after several hours) but then blue screens when booting Win 7 to complete setup. Then I get the "upgrade unsuccessful... rolling back..." screen until I am deposited back at the Vista login.

What is a good approach to diagnosing this? My setupact.log shows only that "WdsExitImmediate called!  Execution will stop, and the queue won't be saved."

Hi

I suggest you to try this:

1. Make sure you use Windows 7 x64 version to upgrade your Vista x64 OS
2. Make sure you have at least 20GB free space on your system partition
3. Uninstall all unused software
4. Disconnect or disable all unnecessary for W7 setup devices (for example usb devices)
5. Run command prompt as administrator and type chkdsk c: /f
6. Run command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
7. Update vista with latest updates available online

Why do an upgrade?  Unless you have a real compelling reason for doing so, a good clean load of Windows 7 x64 on your machine should do you very, very well (I am familiar with the M90 series).

Backup any data to an external source, boot with Windows 7 x64 DVD, select Custom Install, Drive Options (advanced), delete the present partition and install on unallocated space.

Use the Windows Vista x64 drivers (for some items such as audio, you may have to set the compatibility mode of the setup.exe to Windows Vista).

After that, load your apps and drink the Kool-Aid.

"Why do an Upgrade?" I'm never one to pick on someone in a tech forum, but I have to point out that this is a beta, and as such, the entire idea behind it is to TEST. Does it matter why he chose upgrade rather than a clean install? NO. What matters is that in this particular instance, the upgrade method (Which I might add is one a good size portion of folks will choose when they purchase the commerical sw upon realease.) failed. If everyone did a clean install in beta testing, we'd have no clue whatsoever would happen to someone who dared not to do it that way.

Instead of saying 'don't do it that way, do it THIS way' just because you may not care for the method of installation, how about keeping in mind that this is a beta test and try to help with the problems encountered with his specific installation.

just my 2.5 cents. (Inflation, y'know.)

The one thing which really stands out for me in the log is the callout of the audio driver (Or lack thereof.) as you pointed out. I think the first thing to try (If you've not already done so.) is to update the bios if there is a more current version available, and then go into the bios and disable the on board audio. If doing that enables the installation to complete, then we've got the answer to the problem. Provided it does work that way, you may be able to re-enable the audio in bios, then install the drivers as downloaded from Dell.com.

On the other hand, if it fails to resolve the issue, we need to look at the logs again for more details. Ah, the joys of beta testing. :)

Windows 7 beta UAC completely vulnerable to malware

Reply:
Yep, I've already made a fuss about this.

In my opinion, all changes to the UAC prompting level should be treated as a special case, such that ANY change to the level, regardless of the current level or the account type, should generate a full UAC prompt (with password field).

This will be a trivial nuisance.  Most people will just leave it at its default.  The vast majority of those who want to change it will do so only once, and then leave it.

Somebody in Microsoft has argued that UAC isn't a "security boundary".  The point is, MS has a very specific definition for that, and it's true that UAC doesn't come under that banner.  However, it most assuredly IS a security FEATURE, and unfortunately it has now been rendered effectively useless.

I urge you to use the Send Feedback facility to raise the profile of this.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I think the UAC feature is indeed a security tool.

I like the idea of being notified if a change to my computer is about to be made. I like it alot !!

I have mine set to it's highest level, as I do want to be notified if somehow my computer is being hacked.

I can always turn it down while I'm installing programs, if I want.

The UAC feature in Vista was a big selling point for me. It makes sense, and is very effective.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I agree with Thack...this is indeed a security FLAW, and needs to be resoved. Allowing ANYTHING to automatically reduce the level of UAC without requiring user intervention is a security hole. Now that its common knowledge thanks to all the raving bloggers on the net, it will definitely be a problem once Windows 7 hits the main stream. Malware, virii, and trojan authors will exploit this to the extreme because the mechanism of how has been thouroughly broadcast to every malicious freak out there. Regardless of whether the UAC settings in Win7 are by design or not...it is now a flaw simply because an exploit has been identified, exploited by an example, and shared to the entire world.

Regardless of how Microsoft wants to play this from a PR perspective, they NEED to suck it up and listen to their users on this. The solution to the problem is extremely simple, as dozens of people on blogs all over the net have stated: Keep the setting the same and don't notify of changes to settings, EXCEPT when UAC is changed. You don't even need to be notified every time UAC is changed...if the security level is elevated by a script, then harm can't be done. Only notify us when the UAC level is reduced...always, regardless of the method of how it was reduced. It might even be prudent to have a special UAC popup that FORCES the user to notice, so they don't simply click past it like many users do for all other UAC popups. That would solve the problem quite nicely...keeping annoyance to a minimum, but plugging the now gaping security hole that (while it may not have "existed" a few days ago since no one knew about it, definitely exists today).

------------------------------------
Reply:
They have listened to their users.  All the ones that complained about UAC.

------------------------------------
Reply:

If listening to users means creating a flawed implementation with a gaping security hole, then Microsoft deserves whats coming to them. It this is the attitude Microsoft has about Windows 7, their saving grace will quickly become another flop, just like Vista. Windows 7 has tremendous potential...do they not realize this one thing can completely and totally destroy the image they are trying to create for Windows 7?

They can still solve the problems that made people ____ about UAC in Vista, without leaving a security flaw in Windows 7, if they CONTINUE to listen to their users. I already explained the solution in my previous post...its not mutually exclusive with solving the problems from Vista.

Citrix Publish Apps

I came across an issue regarding citrix publish apps. Citrix apps that are publish to desktop continuously prompt for login info when launch. Is there a fix for this as yet?
Thanks Denny

AutoGK

Just thought people would like to know, I was able to get DVD Decryptor and AutoGK working great on Windows7 64bit

Neverwinter Nights Toolset

For some reason I am unable to open two seperate instances of the NWN Toolset on Windows 7. I have been capable of doing this for years on XP but now the second instance just doesn't launch.

Notes on OSD to a refurbished Dell System

We got a number of Dells back that had been sent in for repair and were encountering errors in attempting to reimage them. The system names and MAC addresses were properly associated, and placed in the right groups. They systems would PXE boot, but would fail in downloading the Task Sequence Policy. This puzzled me for a day, until I looked in the BIOS and discovered that the System Date/Time was July 10, 2008/10:00 PM, instead of the correct date and time. Correcting these solved the problem and we successfully reimaged all the repaired systems.

Something to check if you are looking to reimage repaired systems.

Reply:
The Dell contracted field technicians are horrible about leaving the service tag out of the BIOS when they replace a motherboard. If you are using the service tag as the unique identifier in the deployment database this will mess you up everytime. It's not hard to add the service tag yourself but be aware of this potential pitfall.
