Window Previews displayed as black boxes

Window Previews displayed as black boxes

When I set taskbar buttons to be combined, hovering over the IE icon shows a black box with the titles of the windows instead of window previews.

When I set taskbar buttons not to be combined, hovering over taskbar buttons shows an empty black box. When I mouse over the black box, in certain areas it will highlight what I assume would be the titles of the windows (also a red icon to close it appears to the right to close each window).

Anyone else have this issue?

I have even tried to alter the advanced system settings to what would make for the best appearance (vs performance), and there is no difference.

Reply:
That is certainly not the behavior I see, which is similar to Vista, with big preview windows lined up along the bar. I would bet you have some Video driver conflict going on. I would go the the video adapter makers site for a win7 driver.

I had the same black boxes.  In my case, I finally found that my test machine had insufficient video memory.  128mb is required.

I also have this black box issue.  I am running 7 in VirtualBox but I did allocate 128mb to video.

I am having a similar issue, however the black boxes are appearing in only the admin account. User account seems to work just fine. Note that with the black box behavior I also cannot utilize the preview desktop feature. which again works just fine in the user account. I verified that same video card is shown installed on both users hardware profiles.

Is there a way to reset the account display settings ?

Create a new admin account, and copy the settings over.

Aero has to be turned on, otherwise you get the black boxes. These boxes are so useless and confusing that it seems it would be better to not display anything.

Thanks for the information on the 128MB video memory requirement. I was pretty sure this is the reason for my trouble (video card). On my other test machine that uses a video card with more memory, I see full Window Previews.

Sometime's when popup UAC window, display resolution reset from 1280x1024 to 1024x768

My laptop is connected to the Internet via HTTP proxy. Windows 7 beta could not be activated at such a connection. It would be that it would have been corrected it. A Network and Sharing Center to correctly identify such connections. Thanks.

Visual Studio 2008 and connecting to remote IIS via FPSE

I have VS 2008, installed. I am trying to connect to a remote webserver with IIS and FPSE running on Windows Servr 2003 R2.

This worked fine under Vista, but now under 7 i get an error message saying:

Unable to open the website '<url here>'. Could not find a web server at '<server url here>'. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service.

Now, the web server is NOT out of service, and FPSE is installed and running fine. Web Developer 2008 Express on a WinXP machine can connect fine.

I do not use proxy settings, i tried disabling the firewall, and excluding Visual Studio from my virus scanner's port monitor. I also tried running Visual Studio in Vista compatibility mode.

I am getting this error message before VS even asks me for any login credentials for the server.

Anyone have any ideas???

changing the layout of the taskbar

idk if this has been posted here yet i went thrugh 12 pages then decided to post it anyway. the new taskbar more than ever seems to be made for the widescreen displays that are now the comon thing. i like the looks of having it on the left side accept for one thing i like to have my start icon in the botom corner but there is no option to rearange it or even to invert it so its compleatly oposite. that would make it so much eaysier for me but unless they fix that i guess im stuck with it being on botom cause i refuse to use it when its at the top like that. another thing i cant remember if its implemented or not im on a diferent pc right now and i cant think but when u put ur mouse over the icons it comes up with the little display images it would be helpful if they had a minimize buton if they dont already but im thinking it was just a close button it would help when u have a bunch odf stuff opened and u wanted to minimize a few windows without switching to them.

I agree - when docked to left or right, I think the Orb should be at the bottom, not the top.

Old Hardware AOK - except divx playback

Win7 doing fine on my old Athlon XP 2500 processor with 1 GB of RAM.  Zippier than Vista for most everything.

BUT  Divx playback is terrible in WMP and WMC.  System goes largely unresponsive (tough to pause/stop video).  Video frames not in sync with audio.

Was not a problem in Vista WMP11 or Media Center.

Have tried - with no 3rd party codec, xvid codec, Vista Codec Pack, CCCP codec and will shortly try Divx (which is unlikely to help).

ATI RADEON 9600 driver is Catalyst 8.12.

Any ideas (other than hardware upgrades, lol) appreciated.

The truth is you have stated why. Your hardware while it is running it, really is not up to the job.

I doubt their would be any software solutions to help.

It does not appear to be a hardware performance issue.  Same videos in WMP and WMC played AOK in Vista on same hardware.
FYI:  WMV and DVR-MS (recorded TV) play excellent, its just divx.

It appears to be a codec issue.

The problem in WMP and WMC is that the video appears to be slightly slow and the audio keeps getting further and further ahead.
When using Windows Media Player Classic the video and audio stay in sync throughout.

According to other forums, WMP and WMC continue to use their own codecs for formats they know, regardless of installed codecs and no one appears to know how to change it.  Forums have also suggested that the problem is widespread (?) amongst upgraders and non-existent with fresh installed Win7.  Maybe previously installed (and not so compatible codecs are carried over?).

A friend is having same problem on 3 different laptops with Windows 7 and DivX files.
Any ideas (other than hardware upgrades, lol) appreciated.

Hi Paco,
Does WMP play the DivX OK or is the problem just in bs player?  Suggest install CCCP codec pack for divx play in bs player.  But WMP should not need third party codecs.

But, it does for AVI (DivX/XVid) playback, as there isn't an inbox codec for them.
Agreed, though, with the suggestion to try CCCP.
Also confirmed working in Win7 is ffdshow-tryouts (which also happens to be a lot faster & lighter than the official DivX codec.)

My best (educated) guess as to the posted issue:  the named system just doesn't play that nicely with the DivX codec (overhead issue.)  Rather similar to the issue that I had with my lappy when I installed Vista on it - AVI playback was a  horrible stuttering mess.  Uninstalling DivX, and installing ffdshow, made a huge difference for the better.

Windows Defender Randomly Turning Off And On.

Anyone having this issue. I have had this since installing but it's not a serious thing so never bothered complaining. Just wondered if I was the only one.

Basically out of nowhere the Action Center gives a balloon saying Windows Defender is turned off, click here to turn it on. And after a while, it goes away and turns itself on by itself.

Hi All!

Yes, this has happened to me also.  It seems the Windows Defender service is set to startup Automatically Delayed. So, depending on how much auto-start apps you have running on your system determines how long from bootup, to desktop, to all services starting, will cause Defender to startup much later than it did on Vista.

I don't want to sound preachy, but ignoring these sorts of issues is diametrically opposed to the purpose of beta testing.

In other words, the beta is all about testing and by way of feedback, making Windows 7 better.

How bad would it suck to have a problem you knew about, and perhaps had a genuine fix for, make it into the final release because it wasn't irritating enough (yet)?

Hi,

I have trouble with running processes in Windows 7, I know that Internet Explorer now processes distributed as tabs, but sometimes I open only one website without tabs and come together three iexplore.exe process in addition to three rudll32.
There's something strange when I run applications and then I move the application or simply run into the same feature, I do not properly process ends as I said still in the process but no one comes and I get to perform another action to change processes and let me handle properly.

 Thanks.

Windows 7 on Asus EEEPC

Greetings!

First of all let me praise the coders for delivering an OS which looks like a huge step in the right direction: it's only in beta stage but fast, stable and looks pretty.
Ok, that was the good part, now for some annoyance.

I installed Windows 7 on my EeePC 901 using an USB thumb without any trouble. There's basically an entire forum section at EeeUser.com devoted to this.

The OS on a Netbook is very responsive - I have 2GB RAM, but I read other people using only 1GB enjoying their experience. The main issue is THE BLACK SCREEN.

In essence, during installation, at startup and resuming after hibernation, the video driver freaks up and displays a black screen.

The first workaround was to put the PC to sleep, and then waking it up. The screen revives.
Then - I don't remember where, sorry - someone suggested another workaround: using Win+P and then pressing enter, basically to change the display output to "duplicate" (which accidentally changes the resolution), then reverting to normal mode.
Then a wise guy in this thread revealed a somewhat nicer trick, using the command:

displayswitch /extend

As an afterthought, it is the same trick (changing the display output mode) but done with way more style.

The bottom line is the intel driver for Windows 7 must be a little bugged (euphemism). Other important issue is the inability to plug in anything to the VGA port (BSOD as certain as taxes and obvioulsy death itself, but more immediate).
This is probably caused by the intel driver, since in safe mode I can connect a beamer and survive. Only it is not that useful to have a beamer working when the applications I'd like to project don't.

Has anyone additional informations to share? Has the MS staff any hint? Thanks in advance.

Taskbar Behaviour (left clicking a running program)

I personally love the new taskbar. The only problem I have with it, is that I strongly believe that an icon with open instances should still open another instance when you left click on it. It should always stay an icon no matter what. I have shown many less technically inclined friends Windows 7 and every single time they found that they didn't know how to open a new "Office" instance or "IE" instance. I know that you already have this function with the middle scroll wheel button. But I really think it would make alot more sense to give the left button this function ALWAYS. It seems ridiculous to me that you must right click and then left click out of a list in order to open another instance of a program. I think by doing this it will make alot more people a fan of the new taskbar while not bugging any of the current fans of the new taskbar. It should help persuade those people who don't like the idea of combining icons with open windows. Does anybody agree with me? If people say they agree, microsoft will do it! I just think it is in their best interest and will prevent alot of negative feelings about the taskbar.

Reply:
Does nobody agree with me on this one? lol. I just don't see what function the left click on a running icon really has right now. It just opens all current running instances of a program. Not really that useful. I would think that functionality should be moved to the jump list or to the middle button and then move the "open another instance" function to the left button. Can anybody give me any reasons against this or any feedback on this idea at all??

Logon processes, 802.1x and VLAN swithing

I havent been able to find time to test this yet - so my question goes out to anyone been able to test this yet?

The reason is quite clear - in XP and Vista, while logging on - if you used 802.1x and VLAN swithing (NAP remediation zones etc) you may experience the loss of logon scripts and other important processes, due to the time it takes to switch VLAN and recieve a new IP address.

Do we know if this has been changed in Windows 7? Does the logon processes know about the network changes and restarting the scripts or other redundancy methods?

Another key question is - is the network layer "smart enough" to wait for the VLAn swith to happen, resubmit a DHCP REQ in a timely manner (compared to XP's behaviour under VLAN swithing)

Appreciating any inputs on the issues :)

There are a great many. You can see some of these by using the Filter tool in GPEDIT.MSC/GPMC+GPME. However, it's not working correctly in the Beta so you cannot actually search for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, but only 'Windows 7 Family' right now, which gives you just a handful of the new policies.

You may not need to use GPP to modify IE8 though - it has an enormous number of new policies. Over 1000 at last count. Read more on that:

Hi ned

Thnx for your reply, i get the new policies from the central store!

I can't find any new GPO Preferences for W7, we use them for some scenarios and like them, we would like to see how we can tweak W7 and Server 2008r2 with them. Most of the settings in preferences are configurable using the other GPO settings.

right now i'm missing W7 GPO Preferences for:
  • Start Menu
  • Power Option
  • IE 8.0
Will this be added in a later stage?

------------------------------------
Reply:
Ack - and my steps for having you filter would not have helped for GPP anyways, only for 'real' policy. For Power, there is 'Power Plan' (For Vista and later). IE 8 does have GPP . Start Menu has Vista and Later.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question...?

Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

------------------------------------
Reply:

For me GPP are real... :)

My main question is; what are the new GPP options, in the Windows 7 / W2k8 R2 releases, and how to i get them?

I have the 'Power Plan' (For Vista and later) in the "classic" GPO's but I'm looking for the convenience GPP gives me, it's a more visual approach, easier to get and better to explain others what it does.

I can't find an IE 8.0 GPP settings, does these setting come with the .admx files from Windows 7????
The same for Start Menu, no "Vista and Later" with GPP, only Plain Vista, no Windows 7 GPP settings.

The GPP settings i made work still for Vista clients, but on my Windows 7 client with the new admx files in the central store they fail. Drive mappings from GPP are working in Windows 7 and server 2008 r2.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really expected many new GPP in this realease, it seems Microsoft sticks with the old GPO model, not extending the GPP?! (The new taskbar is an perfec canidate for a GPP setting). No search in GPO's yet.. argg

One final question, why are the news GPO / GPP not downloadable (from the Internet) trough GPMC..? It's so hard to maintain the correct GPO versions, they change all the time and it's to much trouble to keep them upto date. As an administrator i prefer ease no magic!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------
Reply:
I need you to post me some screenshots of what you mean Allards, as I just am not following you. GPP does exist for all those things you asked for in Windows 7, under the Preferences nodes in both user and computer policies.

Search is there, just like it was in Vista. It's just missing some of the Win7/2008 filters. Remember: beta. Not done. Not ready. :)

As for extending GPP - a couple points: again, this is the beta, not the finished product. Also, the point of GPP is extensibility, especially through registry GPP - no matter we include, you can use GPP to change anything.
