However without an alpha channel and CMYK colors this application is useless for advanced images' editing

Microsoft has been involved with many lawsuits from entities (including the EU) that claim that Microsoft infinges on their right to sell third party programs by including too many applications with the operating system. Therefore you tend to see only basic programs like paint included.

I basically just use the Paint program to paste and save screenshots, and it works great for me.

Thanks for the heads up about PAINT.NET, I installed it and it looks really nice.

You know, I expect an alternative application for - for example - Adobe Photoshop. In my opinion, Paint .NET might be that something. Including this to Windows we don't have to use other programs.

I like Paint - simple to use - not overloaded with bells'n'whistles (Paint.NET, GIMP etc for more image processing).

What I DO miss with the Windows-7 version, is the Copy-To function. I find this very useful, and I hope it returns in the final release.

Oh, and what do you think of the new Calc? Great, isn't it? :-)

I really like the new calculator. It's much easier to read, and works great for me.  I keep a link to it in my "Tools" desktop folder for easy access.I really like the convertion feature too !!

Internet Generally Slower?

My downloads are about 200kbit/s slower on 7 than on XP. Using Intel and MS drivers make no difference. Anyone notice this?

what i have noticed is that internet explorer is seems a bit choppy and I have not changed anything.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Well, that brings up another point. I think IE8 in general is slower, and yes choppy at times. I switch between vista and 7, and IE7 is much faster and more stable than IE8. Is that the slowness you are seeing? IE8 is a little slower, but I figure they will work the bugs out of it before final release. I beta tested IE8 and was not impressed. Slower response and downloads, at least on vista.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I think IE8 is slower due to the SmartScreen active website filter, turn it off via the Tools drop down and see what happens.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I did that in beta testing, it does help, but not alot. The problem is 50-60% of the websites are not up to speed on IE8, therefore it is almost always in compitability mode. When every website/server is up to speed, I am sure it will be a great browser. Windows 7 already has sped it up anyway. Time will tell. Back to techoutsider, what kind of card/s do you have on your computer? What kind of computer? I have Windows 7 on 2 computers, the wired connection is faster on both, an old Acer, and a newer VAIO. The wireless on the other hand is slower, partly due to lack of N draft capable, and partly because of generic drivers, Dlink, Linksys are a bit behind with drivers, but they are coming. Keep checking their sites, and often, it will be there.

.gif associated to IE by default?

Most images (.jpg, .png) open with Windows Picture Viewer when double-clicked. But .gif files open in Internet Explorer. Shouldn't they be associated with Windows Picture Viewer by default?

Reply:
Nope, seems like IE is the default program for .GIFs. If I remember correctly it wasn't the default program for a lot of picture formats in Windows XP either, but it's relatively easy to fix.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Noticed that also. I think I've been having to open animated GIF's in a browser to see the animation after creating them in ImageReady, maybe they did it for that reason. (ImageReady's own viewer doesn't do well on my box.) As already stated you can change the file association to open it with any program.

Opera 9.63, Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 and bundled Windows Media Player: cannot play media in WMP

For example, this site ( http://www.novamradio.com/live/stream.php ) will not allow me to use Opera 9.63 to play a streaming file. I am forced to use the bundled IE to play the content here.

Does Microsoft plan on improving compatibility with Opera 9.63, which is the latest stable version of Opera ? Thanks for your time.

Windows 7 vs. Windows Vista Benchmarks - 3DMark Vantage

Well I tested the two on 3D Mark Vantage and I got a huge performance boost from Vista to Windows 7.  I only got 78 more points for the CPU on Windows 7 but I got 1,605 more points with Windows 7 on the graphics tests, that's about a 30% performance boost.  This is impressive.

Ok I just got done doing testing with windows 7 vs Vista on synthetic marks it was slower 3% in the gpu section but after benchmarking real games(unreal 2007,supreme commander forged alliance) it was really close. IT was slower then vista in unreal 76 to 79. Supreme commander it was faster 30.821 to 29.722. I also test pc mark vantage(2859,2980),3dmark 06(7419,7795),3dmark 03(26659,27293 and everest ultimate If you want the break down of this I will do in another post.

The one big thing I found that affected is the driver that was installed on gpu . I was using 8800 gs. I went to the latest vista drivers off nvidia site and things got lot better for it.
For reference the machine I used was amd 4200 Manchester socket 939, asus 8n-e (nforce 4), 4 one GB ram modules running at 400 MHz,the cpu was not overclocked, test hd was a raid-0 (2 250gb 7200 rpm 16mb cache each. If you guys want I can do full post of the results .  The other thing is all test were done at the same temps I waited for the machine to cool of in between tests so that would not be factor. This machine was also on battery backup. one other note their was no crashes any either os

Omen1337, Google for "nvidia GPU physx" to find why the 3dmark Vantage score improves drastically with any recent video driver. You used an outdate Vista video driver so the results are useless. Update the Vista video driver before running the benchmark again.

At the moment you've compared apples to oranges.

Horrible Forum Experience.

The forums here are just terrible. Navigating from page to page takes at least 10 seconds. And my internet is fairly speedy. Normally on forums should take >half a second. Questions never get completely answered before they are already on the 3rd or 4th page, obsolete to everyone but the asker.

So, make each forum page at least 5 times longer. Better servers. And more dedicated answering staff.

Please.

Hi TechOutsider

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't seen the behavior that you are describing? These forums appear to be very fast loading.

Messages will move very fast, when the forums are busy like these forums.

You can solve this problem by simply clicking the "My Threads" link at the top of any page, after you log in, and see only the threads that you have started or participated in.

Another way that helps is to right click any thread you want to view and select "Open in new tab".

You can also preview a thread before you decide to open it. In the list of threads, just to the left of the thread title, there is a small arrow. Click this arrow and the first few messages will appear as a drop down display. You can also click Reply in the preview view.

Hope this helps.

It seems a bit slower than regular fora, but that's probably just because it has all this semi-active content that automatically refreshes the page. I have to admit I can't get the Search function to work properly either and I've tried it on XP and 7 with both IE and Firefox.

This totally describes my own experience: these forums are super slow, and the search is close to useless.

I must add that I absolutely hate forums that do not work with javascript disabled!

So I have to enable it - but worse than that, loading a page is ridiculously slow, and clicking on a page number often doesn't work (in more than 50% of the clicks), I first have to reload the page, wait, then click the next page number.

Moreover, typing a message is so slow, too, the letters appear almost a second later after having been typed!

I appreciate these forums as a good source of information and help, but the forums experience is one of the worst I ever had.

I have to agree.. of all the forums that I frequent these are the slowest, clunky, aggravating forums to use.

The issue seems to be that when I (and probably others) scroll up and down the list the mouse is in such a position as to activate the hover down arrow that opens up the thread within the list. Moving up and down becomes "clunky" if I move my mouse to the exttreme left of the page then it runs beautifully. This happens on IE 7 and * beta along with FF 2, & 3.

Along with that the readability is actually decreased because of the color scheme (if anyone knows a way to change it let me know), most forums use shading to visually seperate the threads, but this one is like looking at an excele spreadsheet thats missing the divider lines (yes i know there are lines but they fade into the pure, glaring, blinding white that is the background.

Also there is the long delay going from page to page. I am on a 16Mbit connection and every page transition consists of: Click (wait 2 seconds) page changes to the top but the threads are a mix of the last page and the first page in no particular order (wait 3 seconds) the page finishes loading then i can move on. This is s true on my 3GHz C2D with 4gig of ram as on my P4 Northwood 2.4 at work....

Anyway just voicing a complaint cause I can :)

I have to agree. The problem can't be ignored. One person claimed that there was no problem. Several others did.

Just another couple of gripes: The submit button is often non-responsive. And logging in give me an warning about unencrypted information. I would really appreciate it if the info. was encrypted ... to avoid a pop-up that stops the page from rendering.

And the search is horrible; can't even find my own posts. I manually searched for them and found them, obsolete on the 5th page.

http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n410/stone_cold_05/untitled-24.jpg

One more question: Does MS look for suggestions and bug reports in other popular 7 forums; TechNet is what .. ranked 4th or 5th on Google.

And the capability to embed an image would be nice.

This YouTube video should show you what my experience is like.

I didn't see anything like a 10 second delay demonstrated by your video.

BTW what is the significance of your signature?  If it means that you have
an AV scanning each and every post bi-directionally as soon can be configured to do,
I would try disabling that feature.

------------------------------------
Reply:
My AV does not have a "web shield" or "web guard", as many others do. Thus it does not slow down web access. Look at Kaspersky. The #1 complaint is that it slows down web browsing.

And a 10 second delay is pretty long. And often times the buttons are non-responsive.

SSL Crashed Performance Point

We applied an SSL Certificate to our Sharepoint server and it disabled Performance point and we cannot figure out what went wrong.  The Sharepoint site seems to have taken the change ok.  We do have a redirect from the old site to the https, made changes to the port and now when we go into a dashboard we get an error for any performance point object.  Just a general error no details.  The strange part is the preview site on the same server is not affected at all.  I have tried to republish everything thinking theres some kind of break there and nope.  Ive tried going back without the https but because of the redirect cant get there.  Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might have happened and how to fix it.  This is on our production server and causing major problems.

Reply:
Ken,

You will probably need to uninstall Dashboard Viewer for SharePoint Services and then reinstall it pointing it to the new HTTPS site.

Just an FYI, this was a big issue that we finally resolved with technical support.  It appears that you cannot just add an SSL certificate to Performance Point Server, or the Sharepoint running the Performance Point.  Before you add the SSL it's extremely important to uninstall the peformance point monitoring software on the machine.  Make sure you know what your domain settings are including any and all network service accounts.  If you don't remove the monitoring server you have to manually uninstall it, working your way through add remove programs, to the registry then removing the files themselves NOT a good solution.   It also could cause you to manually re-install them when your done applying the SSL.  So remove the monitoring components, apply the SSL certificate to Sharepoint then re-install the monitoring server ensuring that you are applying the option for the Sharepoint to utilize the HTTPS during configuration.  If you get an error on installation that relates to not being able to install the proper DLL to the assembly folder, hold tight, because now you need to find the appropriate gacutil.exe for .net 2.0 since this is the current version that Peformance Point utilizes.  You then will most likely have to navigate down to the peformance point folder at the command prompt and manually add all 30 dll's to the assembly folder using the gacutil.   So 2 hours into this and your installation is still not complete, once you have installed all of the appropriate dll's or if your lucky and the installation of the monitoring server went better then expected, you now have to re-run the monitoring server installation.  Making sure all of the settings are pointing to the HTTPS for your sharepoint instance.  If your lucky and this process works the second time, you should only need to re-deploy any of the projects that were running on performance point.  Once this is done you should be able to visualize your dashboards and scorecards.  So the short end of this story is DON'T install SSL until you have removed the Monitoring Server from Performance point.

Windows Forms->Setup/ClickOnce->Bootstrap Manifest Generator Solutions Thread?

David Guyer looks after a tool called the Bootstrap Manifest Generator and has a sticky announcement in the ClickOnce&Setup Deployment Projects forum (under Windows Forms).

I'm thinking it could be useful if there was a sticky thread in that forum where users could post their specific BMG solutions, such as how to detect Office PIAs, .Net Service Packs, and other redists in general.  If someone figures out a BMG setting to check for Office PIAs then it can be shared with the rest of the world.

VirtualPC Can't Access Network

My work uses a very old version of Lotus Notes, so to check my email on Vista, I've been running Windows XP in a virtual machine.  That XP Virtual Machine has lost it's net connectivity after I've upgraded to Windows 7.

No problems since installation

I've posted before about how great I think Windows 7 is and now I'm on day 13 and still love it.  I also found a link to 10 videos that explain some of the new stuff in Windows 7.  I'm not saying they are the most technical videos, but they will give the new user a little better insight into Windows 7.  I have two friends who were pretty pessimistic about anything Windows, but convinced them to try and now they are replacing their Windows XP Pro 64-bit with Windows 7 64-bit.  And both have been building computers for their customers for years.

Here's the link to the videos.  There are 10.  http://www.infoworld.com/video/index.html?bcpid=1388789577&bclid=1443717127&bctid=8627021001

Update: Known Windows 7 Beta Download Issues with Certain Browsers and Settings

Any users having browser trouble or other issues while trying to download the Windows 7 Beta should read this:

Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 support the Windows 7 Beta download experience. Please note that Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 users behind a proxy server should use the automatic configuration for their proxy server for the best download experience.

Additionally, there are known issues with the Firefox and Chrome browsers that could prohibit a successful download.  Microsoft is  investigating the problem and we'll work with them to provide updates here, the MSDN forums and in Live Search QnA with more information when it is available.

I hope this is helpful!

How I achieved it

Set bios to boot from dvd drive, booted up and OMG got error code 5 could not boot from drive. Took a deep breath and had a look on the forum, found out it was because there was no driver for the dvd so the installer could not find it, anyways I installed windows XP (booting from same drive) didn't bother loading any drivers or activating because I was not going to use XP, stuck the windows 7 disk in and budder bing budder boom started installing (selected clean install) after it had copied all files and rebooted I entered bios and set to boot from hard drive first, rebooted into setting up windows and to my amazement it completed, once it had started up found some driver problems (was expecting this) graphics card not recognised and onboard sis Ethernet adapter not recognised tried looking for vista driver for Ethernet adapter installed a few different ones with no luck. Tried looking for vista driver for the graphics card, no chance had brain wave and thought I would install a netgear USB network adapter (WG111v2) after soding around for half hour installed it and bingo I was online windows started updating and said it had found sis Ethernet adapter driver so installed it and L no good, searched for graphics driver without luck shut down rebooted for various reasons after about three times it found Ethernet adapter and installed it sweet, removed netgear adapter and stuck in network cable all was great shut down removed the poxy radion 9250 card and replaced with FX 5600XT 128MB rebooted windows found new hardware found driver from windows update and installed driver rebooted and wam sorted first impressions it looks a bit vista but have already noticed faster and I think better (not a lover of vista) anyway off to play see if I can bugger it up.

Hope this helps someone

Thank you and goodnight

Headset mikrofon will nicht

Hi,

[rechtsklick lautsprecher unten rechts ...]

Hier kannst du die Mikrofone sehen. Öffne die Einstellungen deines Mikrofons.

Öffne den 3. Reiter (Levels). Setze alles auf maximum.

Öffne den 4. Reiter (Enhancements).

Anyone managed to install on SCSI?

So it looks like Win 7 beta doesn't want to play with (parallel) SCSI, eh? It refuses to acknowledge that my system has any drives present to install to. I tried the 32bit version too but still no love. Anyone managed a work-around for this (64bit preferred)? My cards are Adaptec U160 variants (39160, 29160).

I've been trying for the past 2 days to find a suitable driver with no luck.

Also opened a thread a minute ago, I hope it will be resolved.

Just saw that. We shouldn't have 3 threads on the same topic (cubeo posted similar thread too). Maybe a Mod can merge the 3 threads?

W7 UI

What it's Vista on know it's Windows 7!! Microsoft change the UI, because it looks like vista. The toolbar is a start, but change the control panel back to a Xp look but nice looking. The start menu needs to change also. People will look at W7 as if it is Vista if you do not change more stuff. Thank for all you hard work, Jason

It sounds to me like you're saying the changes made aren't enough... wow. That might actually be a first! Most people have been whining about it changing too much, lol.

Well I know a lot about computers and OS's so it is not bad for me. But I am thinking of the avg. Joe that does not know much about OS's. I think the look and the use should be easy for every one. It looks toooo vista like and is still hard to use for most people. I put my mom to the test and she and the OS failed. Thank U Jason

SCSI drive not recognized

Hello,

I've got my system installation on a SCSI harddrive and wanted to do the same on windows 7, but when I tried to install via boot it didn't show the two NTFS partitions  SCSI drive.

I then tried to install it from windows XP x64 but when I get to choose the drive the C partition I prepared in advance needed an LSI driver. I've downloaded all the drivers I could find for it, but nothing worked.

Do I need a special driver for Windows 7 ? if so where can I find it ?

Thanks for helping

Yeah, I see we're not alone. I'm in the same boat with my Adaptec cards.

nwifi.sys stop error

I have received this stop twice so far on one computer and only once on another, both are Inspiron 9400. I was not able to get the stop error code, but was wondering if anyone else has seen this error. the only difference is that one computer has the Toshiba BT stack and the other does not. The one without it has stoped twice. I will try to get the stop code and post if I can find it.

That's the Native WiFi driver, and is a Windows system file. It supports Miniport WiFi drivers and handles things like packet creation and prioritizing.

Basically it allows manufacturers to create much smaller simpler WiFi drivers as it does most of the hard work.

The upshot is either there's a problem in your Win7 install, or your WiFi driver install.

Try removing and re-installing the WiFi driver first.
