How to send files to the Microsoft SCE team for review

Hello SCE Community,

We have recently setup an email address for you all to send data like setup logs to us for review - rather than pasting them into a thread post.  This shold help keep the posts smaller and easier to read.

If requested, please send email to SCEDATA@microsoft.com .  If at all possible, please zip the files before sending.

Please be sure to match the subject of the email with the subject of the post.

Thanks,

Desktop search integration annoying

desktop seach feature integration is annoying. Already the Windows OS is buggy and bulky. if I enable desktop search without thought to the user's convenience, it is really pissing me off. Why is Microsoft throing every premature technology at our face wihtout asking for user opinin???? What happens to hard disk life if the inefficient indexer that MS wriote starts eating uop the disk?

.

Juan,

Were you able to find a way out from this issue ?? I am experiencing the same. If you have followed anything or found some info, please forward it to me (jgerardo27@hotmail.com).

Thanks,

Jesus,

Found a very good webcast on BDD

http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/WebCastEventDetails.aspx?culture=en-US&EventID=1032294174&CountryCode=US

There are probably others, but this recorded webcast actually shows the product in use.  And, since it's already recorded, you can skip through the parts you don't need.

Third-party CSPs are not available when installing CA (Windows Server 2008 Beta3)

Hello! We have a problem with Certification Authority from Windows Server 2008 Beta3. When using wizard of installing this role, there's a step to choose CSP. Our CSPs have types 71 and 75, but the list of available ones contains CSPs of types 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 only. So we can't use our CSP with it. P.S. If such behavior won't be corrected in release version of Vista, we will have to resolve it in any way, this is critical for us. So, we will request a fix for Windows Server 2008 using our benefits as Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. So, we want to ask Microsoft to help us to avoid this process! Thank you.

SSIS Security and Connection Passwords

Why oh WHY can't we at least get access to the password property of connections via expressions?  What is so stinking unsafe about that?  It's my package, let me do what I want...

The only solution I have seen on here about the issue of using an xml config file to store connection information is for it to store the whole connection string.  This is not very useful for us.  We have many servers, and on each of these servers, we have sql logins.  Each logins has the same password regardless of what server it is on .  Periodically, the passwords are changed.

What I WANT to do is save a config file in a secure location that is names after the SQL Login and store the password value.  This sounds nice because we can easily write a stub to our password change process that could look for the affected login's file and update the password in the file.

Unfortunately, SSIS does not allow us to access the password property via expressions (WHY NOT?!).  The only way is to create a separate config file for each server/database/login.  So now instead of maybe a hundred or so login configs, I need a couple thousand to manage?  How is this more secure?

Am I just completely misunderstanding something here on how to accomplish this?

Frustrated,

Brandon

Just an FYI Access 2000 upsizer does not upsize data to express 05

Found out the hard way.

Data does not get upsized from Access 2000 to Sql express 05.

Just an FYI for anyone out there who might need to upsize Access 2000 Dbs.

I was able to import my Access 2000 tables into SQL Express by using some tool called "SQL Admin Tool" from Simego.com

http://www.simego.com/Default.aspx

The free demo lasts for 30 days and I could import what I needed to in less than a minute.   ($30 bucks for full license... )

MS released a free separate add-on tool (free) called SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access.

You can get it through the SQL Express Add-on Tools or Service Pack 1, I can't remember which...

Setup issues after applying KB 937831

Hello SCE Community,

For those of you who are able to complete setup with the update, thanks again for your patience.

For those of you who are still not able to complete setup, you may be running into an unrelated issue.  If this applies to you, please start a NEW thread, rather than use this one or the disjoined one and let us have your setup log (for example - SCEReportingx.log, SCESetupx.log) in a post.  I know this must be very frustrating for some of you, and I apologize for that.  Stick with us and we'll get you through this.

If you want to get immediate help, call into CSS and open an incident.  If it turns out to be a bug, the case will get marked as non-decrement and won't cost you a dime.

Thanks,

Justin

Please include MOMPatch.log as well, if you have it.

ADMA create extension projects not adding all flow rules

Hey all,

I have two EAF flow rules going to userAccountControl and info, respectively, that are populated based on HR and MV data. I created an IAF in the ADMA to flow data to a second userAccountControl (UAC2) and info (info2) attributes in the MV for use as comparisons in deprovisioning.

However, the ADMA create extension project is not recognizing the IAF. So I added it to the ADMA.dll manually, but the ADMA doesn't see it and throws a "extension-entry-point-not-implemented" error at me.

1 - why doesn't ILM create the project correctly?

2 - why doesn't ILM see the flowrule when I add it manually (Spelling is correct)?

Unless someone can tell me how to flow updated attributes during an inbound disconnector (employee status, etc), I need this last IAF working.

thanks as usual,

bkg

bkg,

First thing that comes to mind: on your ADMA, did you create advanced flow rules (if not, you wouldn't need an extension). Also, in your stack trace (can you post a copy?), is the exception generated for the ADMA and not for some other MA? It is very well possible that you do a sync on the ADMA that causes an exception in the extension of another MA ...

In your extension, you can always set a breakpoint on your select case statement such that it would break on every advanced flow when debugging. If you do that, do still see that everything is indeed spelled correctly? Is the debugger triggered at all? (Don't forget to compile for Debugging)

Paul.

Thanks Paul.

Advanced flow rules are indeed created. Actually, the two outbounds quite complex and the uncooperative inbound is very minor. The exception is indeed generated for the ADMA - though I did walk through the mvextension and hr extensions to be sure.

Unfortunately, I'm unable (or simply not smart enough) to attach the debugger. I'm running VS.net 2k5 and can set break points, attach to the service, but can't attach to the CRL for some reason. I've read the materials for the CRLDebugger.exe and that left me more confused than ever. Never had this problem w/ VS.net 2k3.

Here's my stack trace:

Microsoft.MetadirectoryServices.EntryPointNotImplementedException: Error in the application.
at Mms_ManagementAgent_ADMAExtension.MAExtensionObject.MapAttributesForImport(String FlowRuleName, CSEntry csentry, MVEntry mventry)

And my code:

 Select Case FlowRuleName

*/// This is the IAF that is not being called. It's completely ignored by the ADMA.

             */// If csentry("info").value <> null, this works.

            Case "import info2"
                If csentry("useraccountcontrol").IntegerValue = 512 And mventry("info").IsPresent Then
                    mventry("info2").Value = mventry("info").Value
                Else
                    mventry("info2").Value = "Enabled"
                End If

            Case "info"
*/// Bunch of If/Then/Else code that works find but is very ugly

            */// Populates csentry("info").Value

            Case "UserAccountControl"

*/// Bunch of IF/Then/Else code that works fine but is very ugly

            */// Populates csentry("UserAccountControl").IntegerValue

            Case Else
' TODO: remove the following statement and add your default script here
                Throw New EntryPointNotImplementedException()

        End Select

Since it doesn't see the IAF, it falls to the "Case Else" and bang... I'm dead.

Can you confirm that you have an advanced flow: userAccountControl+info -> info2?

You also confirm that when there is something in mventry(info), then info2 becomes "enabled"? (if yes, that would mean that your extension is being called properly)

IAF userAccountControl + info -> info2 does exist with the proper name.

mventry(info).Value is populated with the word "enabled" but info2 does not change - it's still null.

Now....

I put this IAF in place because a direct mapping won't work due to the "info" attribute being empty. Obviously that won't flow anything. But it also causes problems with the other two outbound attribute flows due to the lack of a value. So the advanced flow was put in place to "prime" the pump, so to speak, and allow the adma to do what it needs to do to keep info2 in sync w/ info and UAC2 in sync w/ userAccountControl. The only other way I know to prime this is to put something in the AD object, but that's really not an option.

Looks like I found a big part of my problem....

My ADMA isn't writing anything to the "info" attribute in AD. It works fine at acc't creation, but if the acc'ts are joined, it fails to write anything. ugh.

Now you got my even more confused ... writing something to the info attribute in AD requires an EAF, not an IAF. Is that not the source of your problem? Probably that's also why your flow rule is not firing ...

Sorry about that, Paul.

One of my EAFs was writing to "info" but wasn't working. That was an independent issue from the original problem. Because it wasn't writing to the "info" attribute, the IAF wasn't processessing (null value in "info" which is its only dependency). That doesn't explain why the ADMA project wasn't generated w/ all three advanced flow rules, however.

Ironically, my coworker took the exact same approach, modified the ADMA manually, and all is working fine. So for now, I think it's just the Ghost in the Machine causing my problem.

Questions about sql server 2005 timeseries algorithm

First of all I would like to politely greet everybody as I'm new on that forum and new to Data Mining in fact.

To introduce myself I can say I'm a student of Computer Science and I'm trying to use Time Series algorithm for weather analysis. I know that forecasting weather is a hopeless task even for the fastest computers in the world but what I'm trying to do is a kind of aposteriori analysis of historical data to notice some dependencies or characteristic weather behavior on a specified region and perhaps make some short time predictions.

I tried Time Series Algorithm although I have some doubts about methodological justification of this choice (if You have any critical comments please share them with me). But my main questions are about the usage of the algorithm itself:

  1. I've read the documentation and a tutorial on this page for historical predictions but I still don't know what exactly are HistoricalModelCount and HistoricalModelGap. I know that my historical predictions are bounded by a – HistoricalModelCount*HistoricalModelGap*, but it's a rather operational knowledge... The explanation is always clouded with an "internal model" phrase. Can You point me to a document where I can find some more detailed information? (What is the form of the model? How is it built? etc.)

  2. Periodicity Hint. How should I treat these optional values? Are they other possible periods of data? I have data about weather measurements made every six hours for thirteen years** so is it a good choice to set this parameter to {365*4,4} (The first goes for a year and the second for a day)?

  3. This is a technical question and I'm really ashamed of myself that I bother You with it. On the time chart in a model Viewer I can see date from the last year only. Zooming out/in, clicking insanely on every pixel on the screen, did not give any result (apart of broken mouse buttons). Is is possible to browse that data in mining model viewer chart?

Thank You in advance for Your replies!

*This formula suggests how this parameters could work but I would like to know it for sure – don't want to make some awful mistakes in my project. :-)

**Of course I plan to reduce the amount of data but the period will stay.

Historical Models:

Let's say you have time series data t1,t2,….,tn. We build a current model which predicts future time steps n+1, n+2, and beyond (PredictTimeSeries with a time step argument > 1). However, we build historical models with a shorter series. For example, if historical model count = 2 and the gap =k, we'll build historical model 1 with data t1, t2, t3, …, t(n-k) and another historical model (2) with data t1, t2, t3, …, t(n-2k). The first historical model will be used to predict time steps (n-k+1, n-k+2, … n) which is PredictTimeSeries with a negative time step argument (-k, 0). Similarly the second historical model will be used to predict time steps (n-2k+1, n-2k+2, … n-k) which is PredictTimeSeries with a negative time step argument (-2k, -k). And this is why the number os negative (historical) predictions is limited to 2k or –HistoricalModelCount * HistoricalModelGap

Periodicity Hint:

The periodicity hint should be set to all possible periods of the data. In your example {365*4, 4} is the correct choice. However, if left to default, the algorithm does a Fast Fourier Transform to determine strong periodicities; hence setting the hint isn't always required.

In the viewer, are you looking for the input data beyond one year?

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thank You Very Much! That's exacly the answer I was looking for.

In the viewer, are you looking for the input data beyond one year?

Yes. I want to see graph summarizing thirteen years period.

explanation

I guess what Microsoft people seem to forget is that the more "user friendly" this OS is, the less USABLE it really is. I'm thinking Vista is the new Windows ME. Yes, the key is... Administrators, meaning more knowledgeable and in control than normal users.

I use Home Premium and, as an administrator, can take "ownership" of certain directories (like Docs and Settings). However, it isn't true ownership when you still don't have full control of it. I am not allowed to enable the local users and groups snapin and can't in any way seem to enable the true Administrator through computer management. All I like to do is manage my All Programs section in the Start menu which I usually do through Documents and Settings, is that so much to ask?

Management Studio Bug using <> and parameter placeholders

Hi,

There appears to be a behavioural difference between query analyzer in sql 2000 v management studio query windows with regards to the use of parameter placeholders, which causes a problem with template files.

My actual code intent is irrelevant, when a non-equal clause is used there appears to be an issue in 2005 Management Studio IDE, as follows :

where @a <> <testparam, int, 0>

When you go to "Specify Values For Template Parameters" in the query menu, the following is displayed in the parameter column : '> <testparam', and if you ignore this & put the value 1 in the value column, the following results :

where @a 1

Using != instead of <> works around the issue, but isn't the clause != to be deprecated from ANSI at some point?

In Query Analyzer, the equivalent code & action works fine. Is this a known/reported bug? I'm also fairly sure this is new, though I don't recall specifically having done this in 2005 before now.

EasyBCD GREAT !!!

I will thank Vasudez for his information about EasyBCD.

I could remove my Vista RC1, after rebuilding my dualboot and erasing the Vista entry.

After doing that I could format the diskpartion and after reboot there was ONLY my good old Windows XP!

thx!!!!

BTS2006R2 Beta2 Office Web Components Install

This has been probably already noted but the BTS2006R2 Beta2 installer does not detect the installation of the Microsoft Office Web Components.  I first installed the prerequisit OWC from the  cab then installed the Beta2.  It did not detect the OWC during the Beta2 install.

Reply:

Hi Mike,

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by "did not detect OWC"? The BTS installer should check if the right version of OWC is present. If it is not installed, the installer should ask for redist options (automatically download from MSFT website or use pre-downloaded cab files, etc) and install OWC from the redist cab file.

Please note that BTS2006R2 Beta2 has different redist cab files than BTS2006 and R2 Beta1. Please refer to the installation guide for links to the current version of cab files.

Thanks,

Charles

Hi,

The beta2 install was an upgrade of a developer BTS2006 install.

The first time I tried to install beta2 the install hung while trying to download the prerequisit cab file.  I stopped and downloaded the cab file.  I extracted the owc install and installed it.  I tried to install the beta2 again.  Still says it needs the OWC components.  So I give the cab file path and the install works.

I was looking for the Beta2 install file but I think it was deleted.

Thanks,

Mike
