Uli 1573 SATA Driver problem in Vista RC1

Uli 1573 SATA Driver problem in Vista RC1

Hello,

I've installed Vista RC1 using the default ULi 1573 drivers for my SATA drives. Upon starting Vista I started getting a lot of stability problems (wouldn't boot, would hang, etc.). After allowing Vista to shutdown to either restart or power off when at the POST screen my SATA drives would no longer be there. If I turned the power off and back on from the POST screen it would proceed to find one of my drives each time I did it. This error was repeatable each time that Vista would shut down. If it was hung and I reset the computer manually it would find the drives perfectly fine and everything ran as normal.

I re-flashed my bios thinking that maybe something is corrupt also checked hardware side to see if the cables were loose everything checked out fine. So today I've installed the drivers for the 1573 off of NVIDIA's site and all problems seem to have been fixed so far. Vista can restart and there are no problems with locating the drives as well as the intermittant problems I was having in Vista are gone. Perhaps Vista is declaring the drives as disconnected when it shuts down? I'm not sure but there seems to be a problem with the default drivers. Just wanted to give some feedback if there are others with the same SATA controller as I have that installing the drivers from NVIDIA's site seems to have alleviated the problems. As I said I've only installed them today so I'll have to see if any problems come up and I'll report here as I find them.

My guess is something was going wrong on my system with the hot swap feature for the drives. As when I installed the other drivers Vista also installed drivers for each of my two drives and hot swap is no longer there in the taskbar.

Reply:
The only problems I have had with Vista and SATA was that Vista would not allow me to use the legacy SATA drivers maxtor included. Since RC1 that has not been a problem, Vista sees my drive and installs, reboots, etc with no problems

Package Configurations - some requests

To any Microsoft SSIS developers reading this forum, some requests:

1) do NOT allow a package to run if it has "package configurations" enabled and one or more XML files with configurations cannot be found;

2) update the properties window with the properties read from the "package configurations";

3) allow relative paths in the "package configurations" locations (relative to the package location)

Thank you :-)

Reply:

Tom,

If you want to make requests for future enhancements then do so at Microsoft Connect.

Regarding point #1, quite a few people have asked for this but then alot of people during the beta timeframe asked for the behaviour to be the way it is now. You just can't please all of the people all of the time

Display customers based on number of products they have

Hi!

Just started working in my first "Cube project" (as you probably will notice) and have a quick(?) question about how to design the star schema/Cube.

I want to be able to do a selection of all customer with a specific amount of a certain product, for example Adam may have 2 apples, 5 pears and 67 oranges and the range of product can be indefinite as can the amount of each product.

I would like to be able to do a selection of for instance all customer that have 2 apples and more than 10 oranges.

Which is the best design of dimension and bridge tables?

Thanks in advance for all the help you can give me!

Cube Design Question

Hi

I am currently redesigning my WH in AS2005 and would like some advice. We
currently have an aggregated WH due to volumes : 180m+ atomic rows per month. The
problem is that some of the data is not additive. Most of the messures are
normal additive or count measures, but a couple are not. And as we are not
storing the atomic data we need to pre-aggregate the data to the levels that
we require and try to represent it that way. We currently have a work around
in the cubes but it is not a good solution as it only allows us to see the
top and bottom levels of the data. As far as I can see there are two options:

Option 1
Create a Parent Child Relationship of the Dimension that we are grouping on
and have all the levels of Aggregations in one table. We could then have no
aggregations on the affected measures and create a calculated column using
the .DataMember constraint to get to the data.
The problem I see with this is the complexity of admin on the Dimension
(Type 2) and no aggregations on the Parent child Dim.

Option 2
Create a standard Dimension and have a table for each level of the data.
Create a Measure Group per table joining to the different levels in the
Standard Dim. Create a Calculated Measure to pull the different measures
together at the different levels in the Dim.
This would allow for Aggregations to be created but creates more Measure
Groups and complexity.

Are there any other options that I have not thought of that could solve this
problem or thoughts on these two solutions?

Michael

Installed Vista beta on Raid 0 and XP installation after that wont boot vista any more ..FYI

I installed Vista beta on Raid 0 fresh installation everything works nice... after that I decided to add XP after reducing partition size and recreating another partition. I installed XP without any problem but when I rebooted my machine I wasnt able to see any more Vista (Partition was intact.) but there was no dual boot... I went there and added manually another boot entry in boot.ini and try to boot from there but system was hanging after I select boot... FYI.

Thanks.

I have Windows Vista PRC1 relesd just a few days ago but there aren`t any vista floppy drivers for F6 clean instal of windows Vista. The ones that actualy do exsist are olny for an already running windows vista...more exactly...the softraid drivers...How did you instal Windows vista on raid 0 - Stripping?

I will try to answer there question I too have vista installed on a Raid Conroller w/ no problems. On a clean install only though. when you get the the screen asking you where you would like to install i.e. C Drive on the lower left of the screen is the "install drivers" it is not a botton it just says "install drivers" click on that and put your cd/floppy whatever in that has the drivers and it will walk you through installing the drivers to the Raid.

The reason your Dual Boot got broken the first time around is due to Vista's new boot manager. When you loaded XP after you loaded Vista, it wrote a new MBR (Master Boot Record), effectively breaking Vista. It would have been possible to get Vista functioning properly again by booting into Vista's Recovery Console and recreating the MBR. FIXBOOT and FIXMBR were the commands in XP's recovery console, but I have not gotten a chance to play with the available commands in Vista's recovery console.

When performing multiple Adomd reads asynchronously, what are the pitfalls, if any, of multiple AdomdConnection objects using the same SessionID? Is this OK? Is it the preferred way of doing things?

Missing measure in a privotchart "data area"

hi,

I have a pivotchart bind to a pivottable.  The source of the pivottable (and pivotchart) is an SQL query that get many measures and the pivottable are entirely build by programming.
In the data area of the pivottable all measures are displayed.
However, in the linked pivotchart, the data area show only one measure, the first one show in the pivottable.
I'm trying to reallocate the field to the data area by programming, but it doesn't work.

Is there a way to show all measures in the linked pivottable?

Jeff

...and me too please

I also need the RC1 Vista key please.
Thanks!

Beta 2 to 5536 Feedback

Sarted with Windows B2 running > Inserted DVD > Install Now > Upgrade

B2 product key was valid

Got a warning that AVAST was not compatible - continued anyway

Install seemed to complete normally (about 1 hr), but after the "running Vista for the first time" PC rebooted and went into a reboot loop. Would reboot to "failed to start" and choosing either "Normal" or "Safe Mode" had no effect - still reboot loop.

Unplugging all USB devices had no effect.  Booting from the DVD and choosing repair had no effect.

Then booted from DVD and choose "new install" and installed OK.  Tried to load AVAST, but received and error that an AVAST driver was incompatible (apparently an error in 5536 according to the AVAST forums).

No other issues after 1day (removed AVAST and using AVG for now)

Thanks for letting us try this release!

SQL Express SP1

I get the same error. I installed yesterday SQL Express SP1.

I can connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I checked if TCP/IP and NamedPipes are enabled. They are. The SQL Browser is also enabled, active and running. Using "netstat -ano" I saw that the SQL Express Server is listening only on 0.0.0.0:1442.

Could this be a problem with the SP1 I installed? Is there anyting else I should do to troubleshoot this issue?

Thank you.

IE 7 B3 Not Compatible With RS2005

Lon posted a message on the RS UseNet newsgroup about IE 7 B3 being unresponsive and using 100% of the cpu when trying to view RS reports.

I tried it on a test system, and indeed the problem showed up for me as well. Both the IE 7 B3 32 bit and 64 bit version where stuck in a loop when attempting to view RS 2005 reports. I tried both parameter and non-parameterized reports with the same results. The only way to stop it is via Task Manager.

A warning to all, do not install IE 7 B3 if you want to run RS reports.

Hey MS, you may want to pass this on to IE 7 development team. This
isn't good when MS products aren't compatible with each other.

So I just tried that, if called directly via the Webservice and the path string, the problem is not occuring. Unfortunaly if you use this method you would have to pass the parameters via URL string, so I opened up a bug targeting this problem. Thats even not a problem of complexity, I just used a blank report with one textbox and deployed that to the server, which will also cause IE to hang.

I filed the BUG under https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=157905

Please vote on it, if you also experienced the problem.

Danovan, could you share this feedback along with the IE 7 group, I don´t know who is responsible for that, I filed the bug under SQL Server not IE.

Filing it under SQL is the right place to put this issue.  We have a lot of script that executes when viewing the report through the report manager that doesn't execute when using URL Access.  We'll take a look at what's going on and let the IE team know what we find, if necessary.

I just upgraded my laptop to IE7 B3 and see the same behavior before a report is even present (ie, just blank parameters are showing).  Thanks for pointing this out.

Network issues

From what I've been reading there are may people with the same network problems.  I think someone at MS needs to take a detailed look at whats going on.  KB920698 looks to be the fix but it's not supported on 5384?  My surfing is flakey, for that matter if you really start digging around I think you'll all find the network connections are a little flakey.  I have the same static IP as I did last night but yet this morning if I look at it's details via the GUI "use the following" is checked off but the octets are empty but a cmd show the correct info.

Cannot set Connection property of Backup database task if connection string is customized in connection object

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

Reply:

Not quite sure what this issue is, but I tried this-

Created a ADO.Net connection and set an expression on the ConnectionString property. Evaluated value is a valid conn string.

Add a Backup DB Task, and set an expression on the Connection property. Evaluated value is name of connection created above.

Works fine, executes fine. If the Tasks' Connection property, the literal value is wrong at design-time, but will be correct at run-time when the expression is evaluated overriding the literal value, you may want to set the DelayValidation property to True for the task.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks, this one - setting the DelayValidation was useful. What I  tried was to customize the connectionstring in expression property of ConnectionManager. My issue is now solved, Thanks a lot.

Hi Markus,

It's a personal matter, we're all wired differently :). I attended a weeks course at Oxford in the UK, read through everything there is to be read, but in the end it's a DO-product. I understand planning and design upfront is very important but customers get impatient. The more I read the more I understand I understand little. Then I get back to the scenario papers that give practical examples and show you how to accomplish certain tasks and that's where I learned how to use MIIS. I have the MIIS Scenarios v1.4 setup running in 6 virtual machines (except the CA's) just to get practical answers and hands-on experience with some scenarios. Most of the time I read the conceptual papers I get frustrated and wanna yell "Show me, show me how".

Anyway, your papers and al the others will eventually be useful ofcourse as one needs to get into the depth of things and get a more clear understanding. But at the customers' site they want to see things, not only read about it or hear it from me. We already got a developer working out (and expanding) the MIIS Series v1.4 self-service portal and notification service etc. Those are valuable examples that give the project a face and a quick win.

Also, Microsoft talks of their EasyID MIIS implementation, but nowhere is there any sourcecode that comes with the 'How Microsoft does it' paper on this. This would also be a practical example useful to adopt and learn from.

More How-to's :)

Thank you,

Hi Marcus,

Thanks. I will vent more "How-do's?" as time passes :)

The first thing that came to mind re-reading these posts is:

1. Practical examples and how-to's on the first initial data discovery when things need to be cleaned up before one goes life with a MIIS solution in place. I would call it :How to do MIIS joining when things are not that perfect :)

Currently I have my hands full figuring out the best way to deal with a large SAP import and 4 AD forest with several thousand accounts and the joining of it all.

2. Related to the above, even when not fully skilled in SQL administration etc, ways to report results. When something joins (or even more important, when not) how does one get this information out of MIIS without having to hack into the sql tables itself?

I am not familiar with sql reporting services, that's a bit of an annoyance really, once you start with MIIS, you're just about busy with everything or getting familiar with it, and sometimes there is so little time for all this.

3. Already mentioned in another post: Backup and recovery. Last week I was asked to spend a full blown chapter in the design on how I think this should be accomplished. Ofcourse I know all that, or I will know tomorrow.

4. Best practices for redundancy, hot standby, cold standby, what to look out for when sql backend is clustered etc.

Reply:

On an off-topic side note I would like to add I have a bad weekend and can be percieved as annoyed, sometimes, no? It's the all haunting too-much-to-do-too-little-time thing that got to me once again.

So apologies for venting irritations!

:)

just a clarification question…

"Practical examples and how-to's on the first initial data discovery when things need to be cleaned up before one goes life with a MIIS solution in place. I would call it :How to do MIIS joining when things are not that perfect"

I'm not quite sure, I understand what you are looking for in conjunction with this.

Our position in conjunction with joins is covered in the "MIIS 2003 Design Concepts for Correlating Digital Identities". MIIS is not a "join engine" and the "right join" should be based on a digital identifier. In my opinion, neither trying find something within several attributes nor getting multiple alternatives for a join are appropriate to correlate identities in an environment.

I've once worked with one of our consultants on a project, where he determined that the available attributes only did allow a hit rate smaller than 40% for joins based on the available attributes. As a result of this, we've developed of solution for the deployment of a correlation ID.

So, one suggestion I have would be something like "How to deploy a Correlation ID".

The other scenario that comes to mind is "How to do a dirty data analysis for your environment".

Instead of the title, I would be more interested in knowing what it is you want to be able to do after reading the document – if that makes sense. This would help me to understand the scope of the document.

2) is work in progress right now.

3) is in my opinion covered. Let me know what the current docs are not addressing…

4) same as three. I've posted a pointer. Let me know what's missing…

Markus

Hi Markus,

It's a bit late (my time) so I gotta keep it short, those you mentioned are exactly what I am missing. At previous smaller projects data analysis and joins were less of a problem, the hit rates were high enough and what was left I could join manually. The current project is much larger in scope and the hitrate is low. I import and project from SAP (.csv) and then import AD (.ldif) and join based on firstname and lastname.

In the past, at the training, very little time was spend on data analysis, it was only mentioned that it is important to see how much dirt has to be dealt with.

I read the document on Correlating ID's two times and I understand what it is getting at, and it's importance. Still I need to figure out how to accomplish it practically. What steps to take within MIIS etc.

I thank you dearly for your time and responses.
