Custom Rollups on Time Dimension Don't Work After Upgrade

Custom Rollups on Time Dimension Don't Work After Upgrade

I've upgraded a time dimension from AS2000 to 2005.  The dimension contains custom rollups for things like 'Last 14 Days' / 'Last Week' etc using:

Filter([Years].[Week].members,[Years].Properties("Current")="1").item(0).lag(1)

for the custom rollup.

These no longer work.  UnaryOperatorColumn / CustomRollupColumn properties have come across without a problem.  However the values displayed at each of the levels are those from the branch above (the last year stored within the dimension).  Measures display N/A.

Any ideas on how to fix or to re-do using a different technique?

Referenced dimension to a named calculation column

I have a cube with a referenced dimesion  to a named calculation column, i suceed to define it, but when i'm doing 'Process', I get an error 'invalid column name'. what's the problem?

eliminating some choises in multivalued parameters

hello to every body. well i am using sql server 2005 designer to crete reports. well it gives the opportuniry to create automatically multivalued parameters. my problem is that i want to eliminate some choises from the parameters.I noticed that sqlserver 2005 uses the member_caption function to take the values but it returns some values that i don't want.

I tried to create a new dataset with the values i want but then i have problem in taking more than one values. what can i do?

thank u in advance for your answers.

get dimensions of a perspective in mdx

hi guys!

i need to get a list of all dimensions used in a perspective
so i wrote a little query that should show me the things i need:

with

member [Measures].[Rank] as '(
Rank([Date].[Calendar].currentmember, set_rows)
)'

member [Measures].[DimensionName] as '(
Dimensions([Measures].[Rank]-1).name
)'

member [Measures].[DimensionUniqueName] as '(
Dimensions([Measures].[Rank]-1).uniquename
)'

member [Measures].[Levels] as '(
Dimensions([Measures].[Rank]-1).levels.count
)'

set set_rows as '{
Head([Date].[Calendar].members, Dimensions.Count)
}'

select set_rows on rows,
{[Measures].[Rank], [Measures].[DimensionName], [Measures].[Levels], [Measures].[DimensionUniqueName]} on columns
from [Direct Sales]

BUT the query returns me all dimensions of the AdvenureWorks Cube
and not the dimensions of the perspective

seems like a bug to me :(

are there any other ways how to solve this problem?

Locale and Culture

As I am developing reports to be used in severel different languages I would like to start a discussion about locales and cultures.

Hope to find answers to very simple questions like whats the difference between locale and culture and what determines the language used by the reporting service and the preview in visual studio.

Please share your expirence .

Do not delete things, it bites

Hello,

I noticed that when you delete things or substitute tables, you get in trouble.

- Delete a named query used in a partition before deleting the partition

- Delete a named Calculation from a table in the Ds view, whathever you do

- Replace a table with another table which has less columns even if none of the lesser columns are used nowhere.

The XML do not get updated accordingly leading in all kinds of errors, some requiring restore from an older version.

Just a FYI.

BTY, I do not know how to submit bug reports.

I think we have both come across the same problem (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=640957&SiteID=1).

For permissions, I have manually cleaned up the xml files. If you post this on connect.microsoft.com, let me know as I  cannot do that. I can vote for it.

btw, how did you get build 9.00.2175.00?

Reply:

Yes, the changes you made in DSV will not propagate to other linked ojects. Since you are deleting things from DSV, the related binding will be broken and it is up to the user to rebind or remove it. Anyway, you should get validation error when you try to deploy and find out the broken binding.

We have already got customer request on this issue. We will consider to improve the user experience in the next release.

------------------------------------
Reply:
I disagree. It is not a case of improving the user experience. It is a bug.

------------------------------------
Reply:

A bug means that the software is not doing what it is supposed to do in the design spec. This is not a bug because we don't have it in design spec. You can say it is design flaw. However, from the user experience, people hated to see something that deleted automatically without any control. Therefore, what I suggested is to enhance the user experience. After deleting the objects in DSV, we could show a list box to list all the broken bindings and give user the option to delete the broken objects. Some advanced users may want to leave the broken bindings so that they can bind to different things instead of regenerate the objects or redo all the modifications.

Anyway, we already addressed the issue. We will consider it in future release.

Thanks

This often happens when building complex products such as SQL2005. Do not take it the wrong way.

When is the planned release of the fix?

Is it possible to create a measure of data type string?

I'm attempting to build a cube that will dynamically pivot normalized data in a table.

table contains the following columns: column, client, name, columnvalue

I want to put client and name in the rows, column in columns, and columnvalue in detail fields.

columnvalue is datatype string - which would be non-aggregatable.

I am unable to create a non-aggregateable measure of type string for the columnvalue. Even though both string and non-aggregatable are options for building a measure.

Any ideas how I might work around this? Calculated Measure? Custom datatype?

Excel Add-in for Analysis Services - What-If

Hi *,

I'm having a hard time with the Excel Add-In for Analysis Services What-If function. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the what-if function is the only possibility to write-back to a analysis services cube, right?

My problem is that every time I try to run What-If Analysis I get an error message saying that non of the cells satisfy the all-dimension rule. That does'nt make any sense since I'm working with a AS2005-only cube...

Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!

DVD, installation & Corp Networks

I am very disappointed that Vista only comes on and requires a DVD ROM.  For one, in my experience in corp networks & equip purchases DVD ROMs were not regularly purchased with new equipment as these were seen as an unnecessary expense.  So now that Vista is requiring it, corp networks are going to be hard pressed to go out and purchase one for each and every computer. Even if the argument is to go purchase an external one and use that....the read/write speed on external drives are going to slow down the upgrade process and increase IT costs.  And what is going to happen if one is used and later on a file is needed from the DVD?  Is the OS at that point going to work with repointing it to a network drive, and will it automatically find the correct path for whatever file it's looking for, or are IT employees going to have to spend countless hours finding proper paths for files?

I'm hard pressed to see imaging work out as a viable alternative, as every time I have seen it used even with SYSPREP there ends up being a problem with the chipset and/or additional necessities for all drivers across different hardware.

Deleting a Role does not delete <DimensionPermission> from the dimension or cube

While trying to delete a role that had cube permissions, it prompted me that it was going to delete the permission from various objects, but it did not. This is in the cube after deletion for RoleID Role 2. Then create a new role and the the RoleID given is Role 2. This is dangerous as it inherits the old role permissions.

Is this a bug?

RC1 updated info

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to share this information that was recently posted on the TechNet Vista Blog page by NWhite.  Also, RC1 release looks to be getting close .

OK, so I've been getting RC1-related questions a lot, both via blog comments and directly over email: Will Microsoft open testing sign-ups again when RC1 is released?

Yes.

Will the Customer Preview Program be available for those who missed out on Beta 2 to sign up and get RC1?

Yes.

If I participated in Beta 2 by downloading a PID and the build, will I be able to participate in RC1 automatically?

Yes.

I know you're excited.  So am I -- and I'm using a newer build (5505) !  More news when it's available.

How does one go about ordering RC1. I am using Beta 2 Build 5384. There is a site from MS that will allow you to order RC1, they however want a registration number in order not to be charged again for shipping. I do not know where to find the registration number. I tried the PID but that did not work. I did register Vista but I did not receive any type of registration number.

I then called Microsoft and the person I spoke to could not tell me where to find it. I found that rather amusing. I am beginning to wonder if it is worth the hassle any longer?

Any information on where to find this registration number would be appreciated.

Mojavekroc, what did you put in the box in the bottom of the page?  I take it it wasn't your serial # from the original email or was it?

Also from my understanding, this is not a Microsoft site.  It looks more like a site that wants you to believe it is though.  I would be careful entering any personal info into that site since I have yet to see it mentioned on microsoft.com itself or microsoft.com/technet.  These days it is to easy to mask an email address to send a fake confirmation to people.

Chapter 4   "Creating SQLCLR Objects" I am trying to get changed to "Creating SQLCLR Modules"...believe Modules is the more appropriate term.

Explores Stored Procedures, Functions (SVF & TVF), Triggers (DML & DDL), User-Defined Types (UDTs), and User-Defined Aggregates (UDAs). After Chapter 4 it is all real-world examples, in 4 we use very simple examples to help reader focus on the concepts first.

Chapter 5 is actually "Compare and Contrast TSQL and Managed Code".

Thanks for the questions, Adam...The more input we get on this the better it keeps getting!

Query Based DL's Exchange 2007

I feel that the wizard to create query based DL's in Exchange 2007 does not give half the functionality that exchange 2003 gave.

EG where can I paste  in a custom ldap query?

Reply:

The wizard for DDG, AL, and EAP all provide the same view of "precanned" filters in Exchange 2007, designed to cover the most common filters and conditions with a straight-forward interface.

If you wish to create complex/custom filters outside of the precanned set, you can use the RecipientFilter parameter at the cmdlet and specify your filter query in OPATH format. There's a bit on the syntax for OPATH RecipientFilter at the wiki already and there'll be a blog post on it in the near future as well.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Great thanks, I like the recipient container option

I hope you dont mind me asking further questions about opath?

1)  Where can I get more information about OPATH?

2) What about extensible matching eg

LDAP_MATCHING_RULE_BIT_OR  "1.2.840.113556.1.4.804"
LDAP_MATCHING_RULE_BIT_AND "1.2.840.113556.1.4.803"

3) since AD also uses LDAP query, will longhorn also use this new query format?

HOW TO: Display Dynamic Images

I recently completed a set of reports that required displaying images (small icons) based off of the value in a specific data field.  It took me a quite a long time to get this to work as I wanted it to, so I wrote a little 'How To' article in my blog to hopefully save someone else a lot of time!

Announcing the Analysis Services Stored Procedure Project

A few months ago, a few community-spririted Analysis Services guys (including me) got together to create some example Analysis Services stored procedures. I'm happy to announce that beta 1 of our project is now available to download here:
http://www.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?ProjectName=ASStoredProcedures
The idea was to create a set of useful extensions to MDX to help solve common problems and at the same time provide some example source code to help people writing their own stored procedures. Please take a look and tell us what you think!

Reply:

Very Nice!

How about a function that takes care of divide-by-zero and returns NULL if the denominator is 0? Ie. ReturnDivide(division). That would clean up a lot of iif mdx.

------------------------------------
Reply:

We discussed this exact problem, but Mosha explained that using a sproc in this way would do more harm than good. Basically, the problem is that there's no way of marking a sproc as being deterministic (ie will always return the same result for the same cell) and so that means that if you use a sproc in a calculated member then the value returned by that calculation will never be cached. As a result, it's probably better to use IIF instead so that subsequent requests for the result returned by a calculation for any given cell in the cube will be returned from the cache.

To answer your other question about IIF, if <mdxstatement> is a calculated measure whose result can be cached, then no, it will only be executed once and the second time it's evaluated the value will be returned from the cache. So it's good idea to create a calculated measure to hold the value of <mdxstatement> even if you don't intend to display the result to the user and set its Visible property to False.

HTH,

Chris

Reply:

Just so I understand:
You are saying that the following MDX script will make the server calculate [measures].[summation] once in the scope iif statement:

Create Member [Measures].[Summation] AS

Aggregate({[DimMember1], [DimMember2]});

Scope ([DimMemberX]);

this = iif([Measures].[Summation] = 0, NULL, [SomeSet] / [Mesures].[Summation];

End Scope;

Whereas this statement will make it calculate it twice:

Scope ([DimMemberX]);

this = iif(aggregate({[Dimmember1], [Dimmember2]}) = 0, NULL, [Someset] / aggregate([DimMember1], [DimMember2]));

End Scope;

Yes, that's what I understand.

Windows Vista Beta

I test this time Windows Vista beta programm and must ascertain there are many problems with it.

1. programs one instal function only once shortly after the installation and if one sometimes the PC restarts functioned nothing more.

2. it would be very nice if one could reduce the desktop icons according to him like one would want it.

3. hardware of the PC recognises or which he cannot instal.( WLAN STICKS )

4. If it seems to me very funnily that I cannot find many things ( How the CD and DVD disk driver explored )

5. And it is funnily one only one quite certain virus program can be of use. And another program is not even recognised.

I know this a lot of things are I would have with pleasure an answer to it

Uli 1573 SATA Driver problem in Vista RC1

Uli 1573 SATA Driver problem in Vista RC1

Hello,

I've installed Vista RC1 using the default ULi 1573 drivers for my SATA drives. Upon starting Vista I started getting a lot of stability problems (wouldn't boot, would hang, etc.). After allowing Vista to shutdown to either restart or power off when at the POST screen my SATA drives would no longer be there. If I turned the power off and back on from the POST screen it would proceed to find one of my drives each time I did it. This error was repeatable each time that Vista would shut down. If it was hung and I reset the computer manually it would find the drives perfectly fine and everything ran as normal.

I re-flashed my bios thinking that maybe something is corrupt also checked hardware side to see if the cables were loose everything checked out fine. So today I've installed the drivers for the 1573 off of NVIDIA's site and all problems seem to have been fixed so far. Vista can restart and there are no problems with locating the drives as well as the intermittant problems I was having in Vista are gone. Perhaps Vista is declaring the drives as disconnected when it shuts down? I'm not sure but there seems to be a problem with the default drivers. Just wanted to give some feedback if there are others with the same SATA controller as I have that installing the drivers from NVIDIA's site seems to have alleviated the problems. As I said I've only installed them today so I'll have to see if any problems come up and I'll report here as I find them.

My guess is something was going wrong on my system with the hot swap feature for the drives. As when I installed the other drivers Vista also installed drivers for each of my two drives and hot swap is no longer there in the taskbar.

Reply:
The only problems I have had with Vista and SATA was that Vista would not allow me to use the legacy SATA drivers maxtor included. Since RC1 that has not been a problem, Vista sees my drive and installs, reboots, etc with no problems

Display customers based on number of products they have

Hi!

Just started working in my first "Cube project" (as you probably will notice) and have a quick(?) question about how to design the star schema/Cube.

I want to be able to do a selection of all customer with a specific amount of a certain product, for example Adam may have 2 apples, 5 pears and 67 oranges and the range of product can be indefinite as can the amount of each product.

Cube Design Question

Hi

I am currently redesigning my WH in AS2005 and would like some advice. We
currently have an aggregated WH due to volumes : 180m+ atomic rows per month. The
problem is that some of the data is not additive. Most of the messures are
normal additive or count measures, but a couple are not. And as we are not
storing the atomic data we need to pre-aggregate the data to the levels that
we require and try to represent it that way. We currently have a work around
in the cubes but it is not a good solution as it only allows us to see the
top and bottom levels of the data. As far as I can see there are two options:

Option 1
Create a Parent Child Relationship of the Dimension that we are grouping on
and have all the levels of Aggregations in one table. We could then have no
aggregations on the affected measures and create a calculated column using
the .DataMember constraint to get to the data.
The problem I see with this is the complexity of admin on the Dimension
(Type 2) and no aggregations on the Parent child Dim.

Option 2
Create a standard Dimension and have a table for each level of the data.
Create a Measure Group per table joining to the different levels in the
Standard Dim. Create a Calculated Measure to pull the different measures
together at the different levels in the Dim.
This would allow for Aggregations to be created but creates more Measure
Groups and complexity.

Are there any other options that I have not thought of that could solve this
problem or thoughts on these two solutions?

Michael

Installed Vista beta on Raid 0 and XP installation after that wont boot vista any more ..FYI

I installed Vista beta on Raid 0 fresh installation everything works nice... after that I decided to add XP after reducing partition size and recreating another partition. I installed XP without any problem but when I rebooted my machine I wasnt able to see any more Vista (Partition was intact.) but there was no dual boot... I went there and added manually another boot entry in boot.ini and try to boot from there but system was hanging after I select boot... FYI.

Thanks.

I reinstalled vista again on same partition and now dual I can select Vista or XP.

hey man how the hell did you manage to instal vist on raid 0 - Stripping? Where did you find the drivers? I have Windows Vista PRC1 relesd just a few days ago but there aren`t any vista floppy drivers for F6 clean instal of windows Vista. The ones that actualy do exsist are olny for an already running windows vista...more exactly...the softraid drivers...How did you instal Windows vista on raid 0 - Stripping?

I will try to answer there question I too have vista installed on a Raid Conroller w/ no problems. On a clean install only though. when you get the the screen asking you where you would like to install i.e. C Drive on the lower left of the screen is the "install drivers" it is not a botton it just says "install drivers" click on that and put your cd/floppy whatever in that has the drivers and it will walk you through installing the drivers to the Raid.

The reason your Dual Boot got broken the first time around is due to Vista's new boot manager. When you loaded XP after you loaded Vista, it wrote a new MBR (Master Boot Record), effectively breaking Vista. It would have been possible to get Vista functioning properly again by booting into Vista's Recovery Console and recreating the MBR. FIXBOOT and FIXMBR were the commands in XP's recovery console, but I have not gotten a chance to play with the available commands in Vista's recovery console.

Sharing sessions between asynchronous AdomdConnection objects.

When performing multiple Adomd reads asynchronously, what are the pitfalls, if any, of multiple AdomdConnection objects using the same SessionID? Is this OK? Is it the preferred way of doing things?

Missing measure in a privotchart "data area"

hi,

I have a pivotchart bind to a pivottable.  The source of the pivottable (and pivotchart) is an SQL query that get many measures and the pivottable are entirely build by programming.
In the data area of the pivottable all measures are displayed.
However, in the linked pivotchart, the data area show only one measure, the first one show in the pivottable.
I'm trying to reallocate the field to the data area by programming, but it doesn't work.

Is there a way to show all measures in the linked pivottable?

Jeff

...and me too please

I also need the RC1 Vista key please.
Thanks!

Beta 2 to 5536 Feedback

Sarted with Windows B2 running > Inserted DVD > Install Now > Upgrade

B2 product key was valid

Got a warning that AVAST was not compatible - continued anyway

Install seemed to complete normally (about 1 hr), but after the "running Vista for the first time" PC rebooted and went into a reboot loop. Would reboot to "failed to start" and choosing either "Normal" or "Safe Mode" had no effect - still reboot loop.

Unplugging all USB devices had no effect.  Booting from the DVD and choosing repair had no effect.

Then booted from DVD and choose "new install" and installed OK.  Tried to load AVAST, but received and error that an AVAST driver was incompatible (apparently an error in 5536 according to the AVAST forums).

No other issues after 1day (removed AVAST and using AVG for now)

Thanks for letting us try this release!

SQL Express SP1

I get the same error. I installed yesterday SQL Express SP1.

I can connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I checked if TCP/IP and NamedPipes are enabled. They are. The SQL Browser is also enabled, active and running. Using "netstat -ano" I saw that the SQL Express Server is listening only on 0.0.0.0:1442.

Could this be a problem with the SP1 I installed? Is there anyting else I should do to troubleshoot this issue?

Thank you.

IE 7 B3 Not Compatible With RS2005

Lon posted a message on the RS UseNet newsgroup about IE 7 B3 being unresponsive and using 100% of the cpu when trying to view RS reports.

I tried it on a test system, and indeed the problem showed up for me as well. Both the IE 7 B3 32 bit and 64 bit version where stuck in a loop when attempting to view RS 2005 reports. I tried both parameter and non-parameterized reports with the same results. The only way to stop it is via Task Manager.

A warning to all, do not install IE 7 B3 if you want to run RS reports.

Hey MS, you may want to pass this on to IE 7 development team. This
isn't good when MS products aren't compatible with each other.

So I just tried that, if called directly via the Webservice and the path string, the problem is not occuring. Unfortunaly if you use this method you would have to pass the parameters via URL string, so I opened up a bug targeting this problem. Thats even not a problem of complexity, I just used a blank report with one textbox and deployed that to the server, which will also cause IE to hang.

I filed the BUG under https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=157905

Please vote on it, if you also experienced the problem.

Danovan, could you share this feedback along with the IE 7 group, I don´t know who is responsible for that, I filed the bug under SQL Server not IE.

Filing it under SQL is the right place to put this issue.  We have a lot of script that executes when viewing the report through the report manager that doesn't execute when using URL Access.  We'll take a look at what's going on and let the IE team know what we find, if necessary.

I just upgraded my laptop to IE7 B3 and see the same behavior before a report is even present (ie, just blank parameters are showing).  Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks, Donovan.

Network issues

From what I've been reading there are may people with the same network problems.  I think someone at MS needs to take a detailed look at whats going on.  KB920698 looks to be the fix but it's not supported on 5384?  My surfing is flakey, for that matter if you really start digging around I think you'll all find the network connections are a little flakey.  I have the same static IP as I did last night but yet this morning if I look at it's details via the GUI "use the following" is checked off but the octets are empty but a cmd show the correct info.

Cannot set Connection property of Backup database task if connection string is customized in connection object

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

Reply:

Not quite sure what this issue is, but I tried this-

Created a ADO.Net connection and set an expression on the ConnectionString property. Evaluated value is a valid conn string.

Add a Backup DB Task, and set an expression on the Connection property. Evaluated value is name of connection created above.

Works fine, executes fine. If the Tasks' Connection property, the literal value is wrong at design-time, but will be correct at run-time when the expression is evaluated overriding the literal value, you may want to set the DelayValidation property to True for the task.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks, this one - setting the DelayValidation was useful. What I  tried was to customize the connectionstring in expression property of ConnectionManager. My issue is now solved, Thanks a lot.

Hi Markus,

It's a personal matter, we're all wired differently :). I attended a weeks course at Oxford in the UK, read through everything there is to be read, but in the end it's a DO-product. I understand planning and design upfront is very important but customers get impatient. The more I read the more I understand I understand little. Then I get back to the scenario papers that give practical examples and show you how to accomplish certain tasks and that's where I learned how to use MIIS. I have the MIIS Scenarios v1.4 setup running in 6 virtual machines (except the CA's) just to get practical answers and hands-on experience with some scenarios. Most of the time I read the conceptual papers I get frustrated and wanna yell "Show me, show me how".

Anyway, your papers and al the others will eventually be useful ofcourse as one needs to get into the depth of things and get a more clear understanding. But at the customers' site they want to see things, not only read about it or hear it from me. We already got a developer working out (and expanding) the MIIS Series v1.4 self-service portal and notification service etc. Those are valuable examples that give the project a face and a quick win.

Also, Microsoft talks of their EasyID MIIS implementation, but nowhere is there any sourcecode that comes with the 'How Microsoft does it' paper on this. This would also be a practical example useful to adopt and learn from.

More How-to's :)

Thank you,

Hi Marcus,

Thanks. I will vent more "How-do's?" as time passes :)

The first thing that came to mind re-reading these posts is:

1. Practical examples and how-to's on the first initial data discovery when things need to be cleaned up before one goes life with a MIIS solution in place. I would call it :How to do MIIS joining when things are not that perfect :)

Currently I have my hands full figuring out the best way to deal with a large SAP import and 4 AD forest with several thousand accounts and the joining of it all.

2. Related to the above, even when not fully skilled in SQL administration etc, ways to report results. When something joins (or even more important, when not) how does one get this information out of MIIS without having to hack into the sql tables itself?

I am not familiar with sql reporting services, that's a bit of an annoyance really, once you start with MIIS, you're just about busy with everything or getting familiar with it, and sometimes there is so little time for all this.

3. Already mentioned in another post: Backup and recovery. Last week I was asked to spend a full blown chapter in the design on how I think this should be accomplished. Ofcourse I know all that, or I will know tomorrow.

4. Best practices for redundancy, hot standby, cold standby, what to look out for when sql backend is clustered etc.

Reply:

On an off-topic side note I would like to add I have a bad weekend and can be percieved as annoyed, sometimes, no? It's the all haunting too-much-to-do-too-little-time thing that got to me once again.

So apologies for venting irritations!

:)

just a clarification question…

"Practical examples and how-to's on the first initial data discovery when things need to be cleaned up before one goes life with a MIIS solution in place. I would call it :How to do MIIS joining when things are not that perfect"

I'm not quite sure, I understand what you are looking for in conjunction with this.

Our position in conjunction with joins is covered in the "MIIS 2003 Design Concepts for Correlating Digital Identities". MIIS is not a "join engine" and the "right join" should be based on a digital identifier. In my opinion, neither trying find something within several attributes nor getting multiple alternatives for a join are appropriate to correlate identities in an environment.

I've once worked with one of our consultants on a project, where he determined that the available attributes only did allow a hit rate smaller than 40% for joins based on the available attributes. As a result of this, we've developed of solution for the deployment of a correlation ID.

So, one suggestion I have would be something like "How to deploy a Correlation ID".

The other scenario that comes to mind is "How to do a dirty data analysis for your environment".

Instead of the title, I would be more interested in knowing what it is you want to be able to do after reading the document – if that makes sense. This would help me to understand the scope of the document.

2) is work in progress right now.

3) is in my opinion covered. Let me know what the current docs are not addressing…

4) same as three. I've posted a pointer. Let me know what's missing…

Cheers,

Markus

Hi Markus,

It's a bit late (my time) so I gotta keep it short, those you mentioned are exactly what I am missing. At previous smaller projects data analysis and joins were less of a problem, the hit rates were high enough and what was left I could join manually. The current project is much larger in scope and the hitrate is low. I import and project from SAP (.csv) and then import AD (.ldif) and join based on firstname and lastname.

In the past, at the training, very little time was spend on data analysis, it was only mentioned that it is important to see how much dirt has to be dealt with.

I read the document on Correlating ID's two times and I understand what it is getting at, and it's importance. Still I need to figure out how to accomplish it practically. What steps to take within MIIS etc.

I thank you dearly for your time and responses.
