Remote desktop: New credential window (anniversary) is not keyboard friendly
The old login screen (Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 until anniversary) for Remote Desktop looks like this:
I am prompted for the password of the last user I was logged in with. Since I have 2 often used user accounts for this computer I constantly change the user. So I just press arrow key down and could type in a different user and password. It was that easy.
Now with Windows 10 Anniversary update the login dialog looks like this:
To log in with a different user I now have to go to "More choices" which can't be accessed with the arrow down key.
There I need to click on "Use a different account", again not easy accessible with arrow down key.
And finally I can type in a new user.
So it was: Arrow button down
Now it is: Tab, Tab, Enter, Tab, Tab, Enter or move the hand to the mouse (if the keyboard has no trackpoint), do 2 clicks and go back to the keyboard to type in the user + password.
The UI has changed for some reason. No idea why, I don't see any benefits. All I notice is that the UX has decreased.
With Windows 8 almost everywhere I heard complaining about how this is only for touchscreens and not usable with mouse + keyboard. But to be honest only the visuals changed and coming from Windows 7 it was no problem to use the OS because there were no real changes in the handling. But with Windows 10 it looks like more and more is changing to the modern UI. I don't care about the optics, if the start menu is a full screen start screen or a small menu in the corner, I don't care as long as it works as before, which it does. But I don't like the trend if the user experience goes down. Don't remove features, please keep the handling and don't kill the keyboard possibilities, I don't want to use a touchscreen.

unexpected error for file explorer
I have a user that was trying to browse her document lib by using the explorer feature in sharepoint. At first we were unable to even get the explorer working.. but then I followed these steps:
1- patch IE
For windows 7 x32 machines this update needs to be installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=27df4b80-e71b-457a-9a5f-02668b1651c8
For windows 7 x64 machines this update needs to be installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2aa7d8a3-d48d-4b7b-bfb6-770af0536fe1
2 - trusted sites
Under the trusted sites in IE these need to be added:
3 - made sure this was running.
In the windows services the WebClient must be running.
Once I did that everything was working correctly. The explorer now came up for the user with no issues. However, when the user tried to copy or move a file they received this error: "An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x800700E0: Access Denied. Before opening files in this location, you must first add the web site to your trusted sites list, browse to the web site, and select the option to login automatically."
The option to login automatically has already been selected for this user. I also checked the permissions to the site and she has full control selected. So i'm now at a dead end. Anyone have any suggestions? She is running office 2010 and I tested this on my office 2010 machine and it worked with no issues... However I am an Admin to the site. Cheers.

here this guy is talking about the permission on the computer.
This is often caused because you are not an Administrator, or do not have administrator priveleges. A well phrased problem is half of the cure, and in this case just make sure tht your account has the 'top dog' administrator priveleges, and is using them.

Hi xascendent, you have to change the "startup type" in the webclient service and restart your browser.
1. Go to the start menu in the WIndows 7, 8, or 8.1.
2. Run the following: "services.msc"
3. A list of services will appear. Scroll through the list and find "WebClient"
4. double click on "WebCLient." Change the Startup type from Manual to Automatic.

Can copy files to folder but not "Save As"
I'm trying to create an "Archive" folder where files are to be saved but never modified/deleted.
With the below access rule, I've created a folder where files can be copied into.
But I get an "access denied" when trying to save a file with "Save As" dialogue.
What access rules needs to be set for getting the "Save As" working but with the above restrictions enabled?
$Rights = [System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemRights]"CreateDirectories, CreateFiles, ReadAndExecute, Traverse, ListDirectory, ReadPermissions, ReadAttributes, ReadExtendedAttributes, Synchronize"
$Inherit = [System.Security.AccessControl.InheritanceFlags]::ContainerInherit -bor [System.Security.AccessControl.InheritanceFlags]::ObjectInherit
$Propogation = [System.Security.AccessControl.PropagationFlags] "None"
$Access = [System.Security.AccessControl.AccessControlType] "Allow"
$SecGroup = New-Object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount("Everyone")

1.press "windows + r" to get the run window.
type the "netplwiz" to enter User Accounts interface.
Select the item "requie user to press "ctrl+alt+delete""
2. press the "windows +l"to lock the PC
3.It will prompt that " Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete or use the windows Security button to unlock "
I need to achieve the function which will unlock by windows security button. But what button is windows security button and how to achieve it.
On another PC.I find the prompt information is "Press and hold the power button, and then press the volume down button to unlock.(Or you can unlock by press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.)" Why it show different?

Good day,
It is not clear from your question what technologies and languages you want to use.
Basically, I am guessing that the solution for "power button" is in device driver level, which mean you can develop your driver.
I would look for solution in C++ forums (they might help you in there), but if you are using Dot.Net, then the only thing I found (and I am just guessing by the function name) is the function CancelShutdown(), in the user32.dll, which you can execute using pinvoke. You can check this link for more information: http://www.pinvoke.net/default.aspx/user32.CancelShutdown
You can control the power off when user press "windows +l", but I controlling the "power button" is diffrent case. If you give more information regarding the development languages you familiar with, we might find you the best forum. A simple solution might (I did not try to catch this specific key) be to create service that listen to the event of clicking "windows +l" using the SendInput AI as you can see here.

Terminal Server issue License to only few users
Hi Guys,
i Have 2 servers both 2012R2, one is for remote app and one is a terminal server. So on the remote app server i add the Terminal Server for Licensing. Now i have add our license for 20 users. The issue is that when our Clients log in using remote app, only 5 can connect and when i check the RD Licensing Manager on the Terminal Server, only 2 users have been issued the license.
i have tried everything, deactivate, install another Terminal Server and activate the license and still the same. :(
i have checkd terminal Server is member of Terminal Server License Server Group in Active Directory.
Have i missed out anything?
Cheers

cant acsess acount
S2D Storage Spaces Direct Server 2016 Datacenter
Hello and Thank All for being here. I am novice and having issues and not sure what else to try. first technet post.
Using Chelsio cards and Dell PowerEdge R720's I have a 2 node S2D setup with 1 VM on each node, non-production setup. I am forcing Node 1 cluster service to fail and seeing VM1 go unmonitored and live migrate failover to Node 2, good stuff. I can see a file copy seem to go into a 'paused' state then complete and my RDP session on VM is only broken temporarily when I'm forcing the cluster service stopped on a node (RDP does reconnect after about 10-20 seconds but would like to not see RDP lose connection if possible and have been playing with (get-cluster).ResiliencyDefaultPeriod = 30 settings, any additional advise there is appreciated as well, not sure if this is related to my issue).
I will see the live migrate failover occur and look ok. I'll wait and check for a job to be running by issuing 'get-storagejob' on both servers. When the disk is clean and healthy I'll live migrate the VM to its original Node to set up next test, when I'm doing that I'm getting some errors I'm able to work around but unable to resolve right now.
Live migration failover seems to work despite the RDP session loss at this time. Today I'm seeing both nodes with its VM (that actually failed over successfully in test) in a 'paused' state in Hyper V manager although the same VM is actually running and online on the Node it failed over to. This 'paused' VM seems to be an issue when failing back to its owner. I'm able to reboot and restart services and finally get it to live migrate back. This isn't practical for production use and probably not working as it should. I appreciate any assistance on this and look forward to hearing any replies.
For what it's worth I think I have done 'quick migration' when 'live migration' failed. Not sure what the difference is or why it worked. If anyone can explain I do appreciate it. If you help me fix this I'll take you airboating on Lake Okeechobee and catch an alligator or some bullfrogs.
Some messages logged are below, there are many. Please direct me to what you'd like to see.

Event ID 21129 - 'Virtual Machine VM1' failed to stop the virtual machine during the resource initialization: The wait operation timed out. (0x00000102).

Would like to get recommendations on these settings for Server 2016 S2D. I see recommendations for Server 2012. Have not changed any of these yet. Link above.
crossSubnetDelay : 1000 (Controls the time interval, in milliseconds, that the cluster network driver waits between sending Cluster Service heartbeats across subnets.)
crossSubnetThreshold : 20 (Controls how many Cluster Service heartbeats can be missed across subnets before it determines that Cluster Service has stopped responding)
plumbAllCrossSubnetRoutes : 0 (Plumbs all possible cross subnet routes to all nodes) ?
sameSubnetDelay : 1000 (Controls the delay, in milliseconds, between netft heartbeats.)
sameSubnetThreshold : 10 (Controls how many heartbeats can be missed on the same subnet before the route is declared as unreachable)(looks that default is 5 in server 2012)

Hi,
No need to modify the heartbeat thresholds... they are at the recommended values, and you will see they are increased in Win2016 for clustering to be more tolerant to network hiccups. Here's a blog which discusses:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clustering/2012/11/21/tuning-failover-cluster-network-thresholds/
Since you are invoking hard failures, there are a couple different features in Win2016 which are kicking in to attempt to provide resiliency here. First off, when a node loses communication with another that node will go 'Isolated', this is due to the VM Compute Resiliency feature. If a node has been isolated for 3 minutes, than a failover occurs. This will involving stopping the VM, and starting the VM on a new node. See this blog which discusses:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clustering/2015/06/03/virtual-machine-compute-resiliency-in-windows-server-2016/
With local CSV storage as you have in this configuration, the VM Storage Resiliency feature also kicks in and puts the VMs in a Paused Critical state. Here is a blog which describes that behavior:
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/virtualization/2015/09/08/virtual-machine-storage-resiliency-in-windows-server-2016/
Now the other behavior you may be observing, is that after repeated failures (as you are invoking one failure after another in your lab), is that nodes go into a Quarantined state. In which case the VMs are live migrated off that node, and it is removed from cluster membership as it is having repeated failures and instability.
Thanks!
Elden

Reply:
Hello Elden and thank you for your reply.
Good to know those values are recommended and I will leave them be. I am looking to test this concept with as many possible failure tests I can perform. Power failure, network failure, drive failure, etc.
I saw the 240 seconds period of 'unmonitored' state. In production, I worry other servers and users will have complaints if they cannot access the VM for that long of a duration during a failure\failover. I changed the value to something more acceptable to try and keep the VM's online during failure. (get-cluster).ResiliencyDefaultPeriod = 1 was no good for me and failed all VM's trying to failover. This 1 second setting was actually on another S2D cluster so I may change back to 1 on this S2D cluster and see if it works now.
I may have not explained my current issue properly:
Here's what I'm doing and the results I'm getting.
I am forcing the cluster service to a stopped state (stop-process -name clussvc –Force) simulating a node failure. I am seeing the VM live migrate successfully to the other node in the cluster, things are good here. I am seeing the same VM that just live migrated successfully to the other node, remain in a 'paused' state in Hyper-V manager on that failed node. I have not been able to find something about this. I am seeing live migration errors when trying to fail back with the VM in the 'paused' state in Hyper-V manager. I somehow get the 'paused' VM out of Hyper-V manager (by rebooting\restarting services\etc) on the failed node then I am able to achieve a successful live migration back to the node that failed once its healthy again. I would like to know why the VM thats failed over is 'paused' in Hyper-V manager and if this is expected behavior during failover and why can I not fail back. I have not seen VM in 'paused' state in Hyper-V manager in other failure tests I've done. Screenshot of Hyper-V manager on failed node below.
I have had many failovers I am invoking and to my knowledge only invoking failure on a completely healthy cluster\pool with no storage jobs running with no quarantine issue and staying in line with failover policies. I've also raised VM failover to 100 times in 1 hour to be ok for testing. I did have the issue you mentioned but not at this time as I've learned a little bit and I've set the quarantine time to 5 minutes for testing so not an issue. VM in 'paused' state in Hyper-V Manager on failed node, that actually live migrated to healthy node is giving me a hard time. Please help.
screenshot attempted of paused state in hyper v manager. account not verified so i cannot put image. i'm not sure what i need to do to verify my account.

So my first word of caution would be not to do a bunch of testing in your lab, and assume the scenarios are the same as production. For example, by reducing the ResiliencyDefaultPeriod you optimized the cluster behavior for an unplanned failure... which is what you are doing in your lab. But the reality is that transient failures are far more common in production deployments. In the event of a transient failure, you will actually cause VM failover and downtime... when it might not have been necessary.
There are a lot of dials-n-knobs for clustering, but in general I recommend not going and tweaking them. We've put a lot of thought and energy into the default settings.
With these failure scenarios you are invoking, VM Storage Resiliency is kicking in and placing VMs in a Paused Critical state. You cannot live migrate VMs when storage is inaccessible and when the VMs are in a Paused Critical state. There needs to be access to the VHD's.
Thanks!
Elden

Thank you for your reply Elden and I appreciate the advice.
I'm certain that failover testing scenarios aren't going to be the same in production (not assumed will be but may form a baseline on how to repair\restore service and tell us if we want to get into this technology) however we need to learn and have some sort of idea of how to recover or respond to real issues as they arise in this new technology. Therefore I was attempting to generate likely real issues such as loss of power, network, cluster service, etc. Likely things to happen in the life of a server\admin no matter the location\age\stage of development. We need to be able to withstand such loss no matter the environment. When I began my testing I didn't have the issue I'm having now and I'm not sure why. I am probably missing much needed information here but I don't think we want VM's staying down for 4 minutes until they are failed over. What happens to users or other servers data that is being sent? What if it's high traffic, highly utilized and needs to be a highly available server - exchange server, SQL, web server or something of more importance than a simple virtual workstation running MS office and IE? What is the expected outcome of servers and users disrupted web application browsing sessions as the virtual server isn't available for 4 minutes? (which is why I'm modifying the ResiliencyDefaultPeriod so we don't lose TCP connections for such a period). When a server is 'ping unavailable' I get alerted and it's not often.
I'd appreciate some help from Microsoft and not sure how to get it other than open a support ticket and also post here. I feel I'm doing a reasonable amount of research and learning as I go, I read a lot of technet blogs to get here and saw much positive interaction and resolution in some cases. I hope for the same here again.
In hopes to work on this I'd like to reintroduce my issue now, I am seeing Virtual Machines on Node1 failover and live migrate on sudden failure (which I think is what we want at this time) (by sudden failure I mean we're not draining roles like when a graceful shutdown or reboot occurs) However, they are shown as online and running on Node2 after live migration (all seems good). In failover manager things look ok and healthy so I'll failback and failback will fail. I open Hyper-V Manager on Node1 (failed node) to see the running\paused virtual machine on that node. Failback fails during this time. Restarting services, rebooting, etc clearing the paused virtual machine from Hyper-V manager will enable us to failback. I'd like to understand if this is desired results, surely its not, or what I can change to make this work better.
(before I simulate failure somehow (unplugging power perhaps) I'll start a file copy between virtual machines. File copy between servers will be running during failover and look to be completed while live migration is going on, sometimes I lose RDP but seems most times it comes back without me signing in and byte count on file copy is correct on both destination and source.
As I'm waiting a reply I am thinking at this time I'll go back to default of 240 seconds ResiliencyDefaultPeriod and see what happens. I was able to see multiple success failovers with a DefaultPeriod of 30. It did fail the cluster\disk when it was set to 1. I appreciate your response and the time you take to help me. Thank you again and take care!

I wanted to reply with some updates in case anyone will read this.
turns out when I force cluster service offline and keep it disabled i'm seeing the Virtual machine in paused state in Hyper V Manager on failed node. in reality its running since it live migrated to node 2. i start the cluster service to bring failed node back and saw the VM enter an off state in Hyper-V Manager. i refreshed again and its gone. Just another humbling learning experience and moving on to the next one. Thank you Elden and thank you all for being here and take care!

Looking for SharePoint 2010 Third-Party developers
Hello all,
Lately I've been doing some research on third party developers for SharePoint and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they'd like to share (positive or negative). My focus has been developers that deliver products that enhance the document management side of SharePoint, specifically with capturing documents off of scanners, full-document optical character recognition, enhanced search features, document versioning, document audit trail features, and integration with workflows.
As an example, my company recently viewed a demo by a local company that works with a developer called KnowledgeLake. Basically I'm looking for companies with which they directly compete.
Thanks for your input!

Are you just looking for other companies so you can compare solutions before purchasing or was there something that we are not providing? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Hi Jon,
It's a prudent step to seek out all of your options. I'm not certain if they are quite SharePoint 2010 ready, but you may want to try one of the Captiva offerings.
Depending on what your entire process looks like, you may need to augment the tool with some development work, also.

Thanks for your suggestion. However we're familiar with Application Xtender, and we were concerned about the number of additional plug-ins needed to give us the full functionality that we want. Hi,
As a workaround, we can create a custom list and using jQuery code to monitor the view open, and add the count to the custom list. Then get the View count using jQuery Ajax with REST API.

How to config shutdown clients with GPO?
Hi every one!
I'm using Windown Server 2012. Now i want to config shutdown clients at 5:00PM with GPO. I configured solution below:
1. Create new GPO ( checked Enforced and Link Enabled)
2. Click right New GPO to Edit.--> Computer configuration > Preferences > > Control Panel settings > Shedule Tasks
3. Trigger c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe with Arguments -s -t 45
4. Schedule time for shutdown at 5:00 PM
But at 5:00 PM, I don't know Server System ( DC, PDC, SQL, ....) was shutdown like clients????? I only want to shutdown all clients but not shutdown Server.
Can you tell why and show me solution? Thanks all.

For example, I have two OU is Accouting and IT. Ou accouting containing A account and Ou IT containing B account but don't have Computer Account on that OU. Do I need add Computer Account? If is ok after that Edit GPO created before, I should choose Edit Policy Computer Configuration or User Configuration? ( I wish only shutdown Clients Computer with GPO).

I'm not sure how good your AD and GPO skills are but I'd strongly recommend you learn and understand these areas because incorrectly GPOs can cause lots or problems and be difficult to troubleshoot if you don't understand how they're applied, etc. Hope this helps.

Windows 10 Mobile 10 VPN issue
I'm experiencing VPN issues. I'm in a fast ring insider and my Lumia 650 does have 10.0.15043.0 build on it.
I have this VPN problem at least from 3 builds ago (If I recall) and the problem is:
1. VPN gets connected but the VPN icon does not appear over the Cellular or WiFi icon. (Except AnyConnect Profile)
2. Regardless of the profile type or the protocol I'm using to make the VPN connection, it seems my traffic does not go through it and I cannot open twitter site for example and I know that my traffic does not go through VPN because my country has a redirection page for blocked sites and I see that page after connecting the VPN and opening a blocked site.
3. I've checked rasphone.pbk file in the phone and IpPrioritizeRemote is eqaul to 1
so I'm frustrated about this issue and I dont know if it is just me or may be somebody has solved this problem.
If you know any trick to get this to work plz let me know.
Thanks

Windows Update error 0x80073712 or 80073712, means that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing.

Order By DATETIMEOFFSET : Looking for speed optimization
I have a table with over 5 million records and need to take out the top 5 records every time ordered by two Datetimeoffset columns.
Single execution of query is working good, but concurrent access is killing performance.
We have a non clustered index on ColumnX, ColumnY; the two Datetimeoffset columns.
Tried to make those columns as clustered index, but could not get the expected performance.
1. Any suggestions..?
2. Create a third Datetimeoffset and combine ColumnX + ColumnY. How?
3. Generate a priority bigint based on Datetimeoffset column values and sort on the bigint instead of Datetimeoffset columns. How?
Query abstract will be like:
SELECT TOP (5) SomeId, ColumnA, ColumnB, ColumnX, ColumnY FROM dbo.IdTable WHERE (conditions....) ORDER BY ColumnX, ColumnY -- ColumnX and ColumnY are Datetimeoffset(7) not null
Reply:
You need to look at the query plan and determine what exactly it is doing. Adding an index on ColumnX and ColumnY likely has zero affect on performance because you are not searching by them.

I would add two columns to hold numbers of the datetimeoffset and then add an index on both columns.
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[IdTable] ADD [ColX_Num] int GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[IdTable] ADD [ColY_Num] int GO UPDATE [dbo].[IdTable] SET [ColX_Num] = DATEDIFF(ss, '2000-01-01 00:00:00.000', CONVERT(datetime, [ColX])), [ColY_Num] = DATEDIFF(ss, '2000-01-01 00:00:00.000', CONVERT(datetime, [ColY])) GO
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_IdTable_ColX_Num_ColY_Num] ON [dbo].[IdTable] ( [ColX_Num] ASC, [ColY_Num] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] GO

Folder mapping in Outlook 2010 for IMAP accounts
- Edited by William Restrepo Wednesday, February 3, 2010 4:16 PM More accurate title

Excellent Question. I thought you would just be able to map the folders path from the properties menu, however it's greyed out. I know you can map the folders when using pop3 in previous editions. Let's see if Diane rings in with any suggestions. That would be a nice feature. I wonder if it would need to be set up on the Exchange Server and not Outlook?

Why would you need to map POP3 folders? POP3 only supports Inbox. All other folder are local. That's a limitation of POP3, not Outlook.
IMAP is a different story - but AFAIK, you can't map anything other than trash and sent. Those are recent changes, so maybe in the next version, junk and drafts will be managable.

Diane, you are right about POP accounts. I changed the title to only include IMAP, so that things are more clear about the problem I am trying to tackle.
I want to move to Windows 7 and Outlook in the future, but in my opinion I feel that Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac handles my IMAP accounts in a better fashion than the Outlook 2010 beta that I am using on my Windows XP machine. I have no preference to either a Mac or Windows OS, but I acknowledge that more software is compatible with Windows than Mac. All I ask is to make each email folder manageable.
Thanks

How to subscribe to specific IMAP folders in Outlook 2010

If you are using IMAP to connect to your email account you may only see your inbox folder and no other folders you may have set up in another mail application or webmail. An IMAP folder list can be downloaded to your Outlook 2010 email client so you can subscribe to it.
- Open your Outlook 2010 email client
- In the left pane, right-click on the top level folder for your IMAP account
- Click "IMAP Folders"
- Click "Query"
- Select a folder and then click "Subscribe". If you want to select multiple folders, press and hold the crtl key as you select multiple folders.
If you do not see all the folders you have created in another mail program or webmail itself, you may need to update the IMAP folder list. The folder list can be updated by following these steps. It may be necessary to repeat these steps multiple times until all your folders appear:
- In the left pane, right-click on the top level folder for your IMAP account
- Click "Update Folder List
