Who will be crowned the last SharePoint Guru of 2016!!

Who will be crowned the last SharePoint Guru of 2016!!

Calling all wise men!

Join us and rejoice!

THE FINAL CHALLENGE OF 2016!!

December 2016 Guru, it's time to share great skills as a TechNet Wiki article and WIN medal(s). Medals? Yes, you can share multiple articles in the same or different categories! Now, navigate to TechNet Guru Competition December 2016  to choose your categories and if it's not listed add your content in Miscellaneous Category!

New and last month of the year 2016. It's time for us to wave hands to say "bye bye 2016" by winning TechNet Wiki Guru medals. Let's make this December to Remember!

All you have to do is add an article to TechNet Wiki from the field of your interest. Something that fits into one of the categories listed on the submissions page. Copy in your own blog post, a forum solution, a white paper, or just something you had to solve for your own day's work today.

A snippet you share can make you a December 2016 TechNet Wiki Guru in your favorite category and this is official Microsoft TechNet recognition!

HOW TO WIN

1) Please copy over your Microsoft technical solutions and revelations to TechNet Wiki.

2) Add a link to it on THIS WIKI COMPETITION PAGE (so we know you've contributed)

3) Every month, we will highlight your contributions, and select a "Guru of the Month" in each technology.

If you win, we will sing your praises in blogs and forums, similar to the weekly contributor awards. Once "on our radar" and making your mark, you will probably be interviewed for your greatness, and maybe eventually even invited into other inner TechNet/MSDN circles!

Winning this award in your favorite technology will help us learn the active members in each community.

Feel free to ask any questions below.

Moving Content Library

I am doing a SCCM restore to another server. Is it possible to move the content library to another server.  This is the location that holds all my drivers etc correct?

Reply:
Yes, using ContentLibraryTransfer.exe from the toolkit.

Reply:
Thanks.  Even if I have done the restore and changed the name of the old server holding all the data?  Thanks.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Can I transfer the data over the network to another computer?  Do you have any instructions?

------------------------------------
Reply:

Just to be clear, the content library must be on the primary site server, it cannot be on another system.

To copy the content library from the old server to the new, do just that, copy it using whatever file copy tool that you'd like to.

Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | @jasonsandys

------------------------------------
Reply:
Yes I want to move the content library to my new sccm server after the restore.  Ok thanks I noticed that after the restore on the new server I don't have \\computername\sourcefolder share like I had on my original sccm server.  Can I just move it to another location?  Thanks.

------------------------------------
Reply:

That's no the content library, that's your source repository -- two different things. Your source repository is not controlled or managed by ConfigMgr in any way. It is however referenced.

If you need to move the source repository, then you also have to update all of your content in ConfigMgr as well using a script or manually.

Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | @jasonsandys

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks I need to move the source repository and content library.  Is the contenttransferlib tool the easiest way to do it?  Thanks.

------------------------------------
Reply:
No. That tool is for moving the library from one volume to another on an existing site server. As noted, for what you want, a simple file copy using your favorite file copy tool is all that you need. Additionally as noted, you need to update *all* of your content to reference the new source repository since this is not something that ConfigMgr directly manages.

Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | @jasonsandys

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks.  Yes this is the hard part.  I thought I would just be able to get it up and download updates and use my old deployment packages and software update groups.  I am now seeing this error. The source directory doesn't exist for package TR300008.

------------------------------------
Reply:
As noted, you need to update the source location for *all* of your content since the URL specified is no longer valid.

There are multiple ways to do so.

  • An option would be to create a backup. Shutdown your server. Then install Windows Server on the new physical server and do a restore from backup.
  • Another option would be to install Windows Server on the new physical server. Install all roles and features as your current physical server. Then migrate all services and IP configuration. For ADDS that is easy, DHCP is feasible as well. But NPS may require a bit more planning.

Either way, both have their pos and cons. If you ask me I would install the new server and migrate all server roles and features.

WindowsUpdate Drivers on Core Servers

Windows core servers have always had an issue with being able to easily update drivers (had to use pnputil or dism which were extremely cumbersome). I finally came across supported PowerShell scripts that automate the WindowsUpdate process for all update types, but especially useful for drivers!  Ever wondered how to get full chipset updates WindowsUpdate?  Here is the solution and you can approve every update (tested on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V Server 2016, both Server Core implementations).

Download from the TechNet Repository and unzip the file (you can use Unzip-File.ps1 from  the repository if you are fully bound to PowerShell).  Unzip the PSWindowsUpdate.zip file to the %WinDir%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules folder (the zip content is in a folder so it will properly create the module folder).  You can then either restart PowerShell or Import-Module PSWindowsUpdate.

To get the latest driver updates, simply run the following at the PowerShell command line:

Get-WUInstall -UpdateType Driver

That's it!  It will ask you about each driver it finds an update to so you have granular update capability.

Just thought I would post here because I spent a lot of time researching this over the past couple of years and finally came across this while looking for a different aspect of running WindowsUpdate on a core server.

You will need:

  • about the same amount of disk space as you currently are using for the databases, but you'll want more for any overheads and future growth
  • about the same amount for transaction logs unless you have backups going and they truncate the transaction logs during the migration
  • the above items are multiplied by the number of database copies in the DAG

Hi Emi Zhang,

I tried to run script without other parameters, as you say but take similar error: 'Exception calling "Open" with "1" argument(s): "Cannot run events"

$Word=new-object -ComObject Word.Application

$Word.workbooks.open($Filename)

This situation looks like that com object are incorrect, or not created

In our department we need to printing a lot of documents different types (png, jpg, tif, pdf, doc, docx, etc.). All documents types succesfully printed in non interactive mode, excluded microsoft doc(x) formats.

If I  login in to a session (create interactive task) - everything worked fine

Do you mean that the PoSH script runs fine when run interactively and only fails when run as a task / as a login script?

If so, have you checked that on the remote domain computer there's the Allow logon locally policy enabled that allows interactive logon?

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Steps to reproduce my bug:

1 Create Domain user (for ex. domain\worduser), and permitt it to log on to the server (as user)

2 On Windows Server 2008r2 (with all updates and PoSh 4.) create Schedulled task with name: 'Word' (for example), Push the button "Change user or groups" (look on a screanshot) and chouse user domain\worduser, and select radio button 'Run only when user is logged on'

3 On a Trigers page select Once and chouse a time in a future, and repeate every 10 min.

4 On an Action page select application: Powershell.exe, Add Aruments: '-executionpolicy bypass -file c:\test.ps1'

5 In a file c:\test.ps1 write somethyng like that:

$Word=new-object -ComObject Word.Application

$Document = $Word.workbooks.open('c:\doc1.docx')

$Document.printout([ref]$false)

6 c:\Doc1.docx must be exist but can be a blank document (with no content)

7 Now for correct work we need to login on a server as user domain\worduser and wait for triger work

In this case we receave printed blank page

If we change radio button from 'Run only when user is logged on' to 'Run whether user is logged on or not' and press OK - everything will breake.

Yep, have you checked the Allow logon locally and Interactive logon policies and more specifically the "Log on as a batch job" policy?

I mean, this looks as specifically your problem.

More info on that topic can be found here and there.

Also, have you tried to first select the Run with highest privileges check box as recommended here?

redish colorize screen on my pc

My pc screen have a reddish overlay color tone the last week! I can corect that from the personalize/color calibration.

In the last step with the grey scale I have to turn completly off the red bar to give me a neutral grey scale color! After that the screen look ok! The problem is that still redish every time I turn on, my pc in bios screen and in log in screen, and only after logining the display is turned in right color! I have a Ati Radeon HD 6570 grafic card and when I open the catalyst center, my screen turned automaticaly in reddish again and I have to calibrize again!

I change my connecting cable, reset my screen settings, change my screen with another one, unistall and reinstall the grafic card drivers but in all those cases the problem still same! So I am sure that the problem is not in my display or in connecting cable.

Can anyone help me how to find where is the problem? I suspect my grafic card is broken, but I am not sure for that and need to know where is the problem to be sure what will need to do ....

Thnx!

Reply:
When the red color is already in the bios screen it is no software problem, so has nothing to do with Windows 10.

Ok thnx for your answer but I am asking here as you are experts and waiting a more specific answer! Like what could be the reason for that reddish screen! For examble if that is a grafic card fault or other hardware fault. If I can still use my pc with that problem or this problem could be dangerous for my pc in future for other hardware piece... Thnx again!

How to increase screen size?

How do I increase the screen icon size on my remote access connection?

Reply:

Hi,

This is because of the high resolution.

Please try to change the resolution settings:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn473012(v=ws.11).aspx

Besides, you could try to lower the resolution of the screen you are using to connect your Remote Desktop Session. The lower the resolution the larger the characters will be on your screen and when you connect to Remote Desktop.

Viewing ASN.1 files content with GNUTLS' certtool

GnuTLS certificate tool, certtool, has an excellent capability of parsing ASN.1 structures. Wrapping it, here is a tiny 'lazy man' script aiming to get information about an ASN.1 encoded file, be it a public or private key, an X.509 certificate, a certificate revocation list, a PKCS #7 message, a PKCS #10 request, a PKCS #3 object, a PGP key ring, certificate, or key (both in PEM and DER formats). Simplicity of use was the only goal behind it.

@echo off  for %%a in (verbose inraw) do (   for %%b in (certificate crl crq p12 p7 key pubkey pgp-key pgp-certificate pgp-ring dh) do (   certtool --stdout-info --%%a --infile=%1 --%%b-info > nul 2> nul   if not errorlevel 1 (   certtool --stdout-info --%%a --infile=%1 --%%b-info --null-password   exit /B 0   )   )   )  )  @exit /B 1

that's for starting :D

Hi,

Correct. A SharePoint Administrator is one who knows importantly at least these 7 nuggets of mine, others can follow thereafter:

1. The requirements to setup SharePoint either singlebox or farm

2. Can administrate at least 50% of what SharePoint is all about, learns the rest on the job and in forums.

3. Has good background knowledge in Server OS and network infrastructure

4. Has good understanding of SQL server

5. Has good interpretation of Business requirements (needs) into Technical specifications (solutions)

6. Must love Microsoft as a company and as a product.

7. Has the patience to listen, read, google/bing, and a cup of hot coffee at hand (Sharepoint is a terribly boring and cunningly fun job role)

Hope that helps you.

I heard a couple of guys arguing about that during a class at my institute. In the end, they all agreed that having a development background is very key to being a good SharePoint professional. It's good but I don't know if I want to tow that path.

Reply:

it helps a lot to have some development knowledge, but it's not needed.

Scripting (powershell...) on the other hand, is almost a pre-requisite for medium / large environments.

This is not a complete list, but should help you get a better understanding of what a SharePoint Administrator should know or have a clue on.

How to pull web site stats, system powershell cmdlets, sharepoint powershell cmdlets, configure scheduled tasks on a server, review event logs on a server, how to configure IIS, create a web site in IIS, configure an application pool in IIS, monitor server performance, review system processes, configure server services, install windows patches, read or modify webpage code, perform server backups, perform sharepoint farm backups, create ssl certificates, troubleshoot network conectivity, resolve errors as seen from the event logs, what an sql server is, how to maintain a sql server, what a web application/site collection/site is and how to create them, perform a query against an sql database, database maintenece plans, active directory, group policies, dns, tcp/ip, sharepoint health reports, how to resolve errors from the sharepoint health reports, help users with IT related issues, common ip ports, logon authentication methods, odbc connections, IE settings, knowledge of networking, ntfs permissions, load testing IIS servers, anti virus software, group memberships, server clusters, documentation, other common IT related components.

This is some of what you should know as a SharePoint Administrator.

Happy Thursday.
