Software Updates - Warnings in Update lists
Friends,
This is the first I am doing patching in s/w updates. Well, synchronization is done successfully and I checked the wsyncmgr.log.
Next I selected the critical updates folder>Microsoft>windowsXp , selected few from them and created an update list , but in the last tab I have seen warnings. Attached the image file, pls have a look and let me know where I did wrong.
Thanks,
Liam.

Hi,
Is there the proxy configured?
If so, this issue can be caused by the Proxy Server Configuration for the Download specified in the SUP Configuration Point is applied only for Synchronization.
Please check if the Internet Explorer Point to correct Proxy Server. Also, use the upddwnldcfg.exe to specify the proxy server used by SCCM for patch download.

Hi Fred,Hello all,
Just a question and comment... Keep in mind that i have the 8RP ... but that's as far as i can go because of the inability to connect to the internet ( Pantech UML290 modem not yet supported for Windows 8) I am by no means wanting to start a "war". What i do not understand about "8" is...
1. What are the advantages of "8" as compared to the others? ..Faster , Safer, easier to navigate, etc.
2. What is the advantage to remove things that work well, and replace them with things that make the book "Windows 8 for Dummies" more of a statement ?
3. Why do most want, or need "Tools" to make "8" more user friendly?... If "8" is indeed a better OS.
Regards Fred
#1. There are, indeed & in fact, many meaningful & substantial differences, enhancements & improvements in or w/ Windows8. Some of these you touched upon in your query; it is all 3 of those & more. In addition to the 3 you note there are many (new) things, that cool as they are supposed to be will only receive terse mention from me... such things as relate to toys/playthings, amusement, social (networking) things & entertainment. The value is in it's technology & a slew of such stuff under-the-covers. Some of this ties in w/ the fact that 8 runs on a variety of devices & that in itself is something 'special' about 8; there's a resultant consistency when moving between devices. Much of 8 caters to Enterprise, both in technology & Features. Another aspect is how it boots (due to which, it boots faster), how it handles CPU, how it handles RAM & how it uses GPU. The noticeable manifestation of all this is greater speed, snappier, smoother, more stable, better battery life, excellent graphics, far less resource demanding & doesn't need robust or band new gear. You are absolutely correct listing fast, safer & easier to navigate and I'll come back to the navigate. Oh, that is comes w/ excellent security embedded & on, by default, is, alone, almost worth the price of admission. And, lastly, it is not 'buggy'; it is solid & extremely stable.
2. YES, YES & YES!! It makes no logical sense, @ all. Take a good thing & treat it like it needs help. Fred there is NO advantage. For example, shut the hotspots, the corners off... you're right, exactly... now, something that works well, has purpose & raison d-etre ain't available anymore... isn't that just brilliant. Sure one can keyboard for all that's disabled & there's nothing wrong w/ using K/B shortcuts, hell, I use them lots... BUT, there's also, nothing wrong w/ touching corners or having the choice... sometimes you'll use 1 way, sometimes the other & so what, eh? Even, if, something is brought up rarely (like Charms) no harm that it can be by shoving the cursor in a corner.; can WinX the Users menu, can Win+ damned near anything ... yet, sometimes I just go where I know something is when I want or need it, my fingers are busy or I just don't think of the K/B shortcut when my hand's, already, on the mouse & sometimes I hit the K/B. But, it's just fine having both, keeping bot & leaving well enough alone. There is no need or reason to make Win8 something it's not, put a mask on it or dress it up in a costume.
#3. This is hard to answer. 1st, it's hard to say if it is "most" or not. The reality is, certainly, not need!! That there is none. Windows8 works, does, performs, NAVIGATES beautifully, as is, by default, out-of-the-box. But, your query is why are so many missing this. Here are some contributing factors:
>> It has a new & different UI. Now, human nature rears it ugly head... some people can cope w/ that (read 'change') & some people it freaks them out.
>> It is a hip, cool bandwagon to be on to bash Microsoft & its (new) products.
>> Rumours & hearsay do a lot of damage, create prejudice, bias, negativity, nerves & paranoia... scares people, especially the naïve, those not very computer-savvy.
>> An incredible lack of understanding of Windows8 and/or a lack of desire or willingness (enthusiasm, interest) to discover it, learn it. It is easier to some mindsets & thought patterns to, instead, retrofit it back to some familiar comfort zone.
>> A huge pile of rubbish regarding its Start screen, Tiles, APPs & the UI, in general. An implication to people that all of the above constitutes some sort of monstrous problem... nothing could be farther from the truth! How it is all used & perceived & understood can & does make a monstrous impact pro or con.
The view to liking or disliking 8, to appreciating it or not, is largely a matter of attitude. But, can the End User experience of & w/ Windows8 be a pleasant & good one w/out altering its status quo? Categorically & emphatically, YES!
That said, personally, I have tried to add-ins. Still, in spite of being familiar w/ prior Operating Systems am happily using PURE Windows8; I use an Applications folder on the Taskbar which, is equivalent to WinQ & have a Power menu as part of the desktop Rt Clk, nothing else. Have been beta testing it for Microsoft (& my clients & others; I have to 'know' it) non-stop for over the last 5 months for everything I do. It is easier, more direct, more convenience, less time, fewer clicks & has some funky Features & methodologies, super impressive underlying technologies and super impressive results from that, in daily activity.
Cheers,
Drew

Start button - menu
Maybe Microsoft ought to listen to their customers (complaining) as you call it.
I feel that Microsoft is making a huge mistake by not giving users the option of having a traditional desktop and start button in Windows8 like they are used to. I work IT for a very large British-US oil company and my wife works IT for a large aluminum comnpany and both companies have already decided against ever upgrading to Win8 due to this issue. The reasons are:
1. We are not going to spend the money to retrain IT and our users how to navigate Win 8. Especially when we shouldn't have to. This would be a huge cost, besides the tousands of Win8 licenses. I have gotten very frustrated myself trying to navigate around Win8, so just think how frustrated the users will be. And this frustration will lead to lost time just doing our jobs.
Microsoft needs to give the users the traditional desktop and start buttonand application menu back that they are used to. And give the users and IT the option to have the computer boot up to the traditional desktop rather than the metro desdtop. The metro desktopo may be great for phones, X-boxes, and tablets, but it is not suited for desktops or laptops.
This also goes for my personal view. I have no desire to move from Windows 7 to 8 on my desktop unless we are given this option.
just my 2 cents worth

I realize this is an older thread, however, I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the issue as I have been working on it for days to no avail.
I work in State government and have a Windows 2008 R2 Server that failed on updates starting March 20, 2012. Until that point, updates were downloading and installing fine. Now it fails with a Code 8000FFFF every time. I have done the following during the course of troubleshooting this issue:
1. Rebooted
2. Try installing updates one at a time
3. Disable anti-virus software
4. Run System Update Readiness Tool
5. Run System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)
6. Reset the content of the Catroot2 folder
7. Tried to remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS -> PendingXmlIdentifier, NextQueueEntryIndex, and AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving, but none of them existed on this machine.
8. Registered Windows Update files
9. Renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder
None of the above items has resolved the issue, updates will still not install. As a note, we are running several servers with the exact same build and have not encountered this issue.

I too have the same issue. I am also having issues with updates.
I found out I can upload, if needed: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs, but when I try to "view" them as *.log files, they come up like they're binary. I put them on my skydrive - https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=2746CB30EAC50787!5923 and if that doesn't work, the short link is: http://sdrv.ms/Mb256x It has the logs from the datastore\logs folder and also the CBS files, from the SYstem FIle Checker tool, I believe. Below is what the reporting events are from my system after I renamed softwaredistribution.

Can you install the Service Pack interactively?
If not, then you should download and run the latest System Update Readiness Tool.

Unfortunately not, seems that installing programs have problems. Then I would consider this an *OS* issue, not a WSUS issue, and the Windows Server forum should have the necessary expertise to help you. The starting point, however, is still downloading and running the System Update Readiness Tool.

Same issue. Brand new installation. But no way is SP1 installing. Tried all the "fixes" including the "update checker." Nothing works!!!!! All permissions -- including network. Admin (native) login.
It should not matter how "old" a thread is. Topics should be kept together -- so the information is complete -- instead of moderators with nothing better to do twiddling with the links and telling people to start a new topic on the same subject with the same problem with the same software. 50 topics on "other forums" all with no answer.
Instead of fiddling with headings, it would sure be nice if the moderators would bother to answer the question.

As already noted, this is an *Operating System* issue, not a WSUS issue. Please inquire in the appropriate operating system forum.

I'm not really grasping what this rant is about, and I can promise you that nobody has "fiddled" with anything in this thread.
This particular thread was created in January, 2011, and the moderators requested additional diagnostic information. The thread was abandoned by the original poster.
In March, 2012, and July, 2012, two other posters reported a related issue -- and in one case, it was authoritatively determined that the issue was not a *WSUS* issue, but rather an issue with installing a service pack, period. This is an operating system issue, not a WSUS issue.
The moderators of this forum cannot answer this question because it is out of scope for this forum.
If you need assistance with installing a service pack on Windows, then you need to inquire in the appropriate Windows operating system forum. There's a long litany of issues with Win7/Win2008R2 and the various incarnations of Service Pack 1 that were released between March, 2011, and May, 2011.
btw.. to the point of topics and titles.. this thread, originally, wasn't even about service packs on Win2008R2, it was about updates, generally, on Windows Server 2008.

Really?
As this thread has been quiet for a while we will be changing the issue type to 'General Discussion'.
So instead of anything useful regarding the specified error (topic for this thread), which by your own admission is a continuing problem and from the results of a basic search is a major headache for lots of folks, your post goes on at length as to why you believe this discussion needs to be somewhere else... not adding anything at all useful. Shame with all those MS initials after your name you couldn't add something constructive.
I've found the most constructive posts are not on any of the Microsoft forums. Seems more than one of you is missing the point.
I've decided I am going to reinstall the OS using the newer R2 version with SP1 included. At least, that should take care of the immediate OS upgrade issue and let me get on with the remaining software installations.

<sigh> It is standard practice to change a thread from QUESTION to DISCUSSION when the original *QUESTION* cannot be answered because the original poster has abandoned the conversation.
I believe that's all that needs to be said at this point.
But I will offer a word of advice... be careful about the bridges you burn on the way INTO town.. sometimes there's no graceful way to exit.

Duplicate devices in SCCM with the same and different GUID's but different Agent times
When in the All systems collection I have a list of devices found thru discovery. Unfortunately I have some devices 2,3,4,5,6,7 etc times listed. Obsolete is either blank or no...the agent time does not seem to update so it looks like it creates a new record...with the same guid, device name...This is not occurring on each device...just some devices...They are not reall obselete records....Any ideas?

PeopleEditor Control never has returned entities on postback or otherwise( CodeBehind )...
So I have the following scenario. I need to use people editor( or at this pint may have to create my own which is absurd ) to select a user and from the code behind be able to grab some attributes (the name at this point ) and use the info elsewhere in my form. Here is a my code behind for my user control I am loading for my smart part.
The controls is on the page like so:
<SharePoint:PeopleEditor AllUrlZones="true" ID="PrimaryUser" runat="server" MultiSelect="false" MaximumEntities="1" SelectionSet="User,DL,SecGroup,SPGroup" AllowEmpty="false" Width="150" />
CodeBehind( in page Page_Load):
if (!IsPostBack) { PrimaryUser.AutoPostBack = true; PrimaryUser.SelectionSet = "User"; PrimaryUser.DoPostBackOnResolve = true; PrimaryUser.Enabled = true; } else { Response.Write(PrimaryUser.Entities.Count.ToString()); if (PrimaryUser.ResolvedEntities.Count > 0) { Page.Response.Write(PrimaryUser.ResolvedEntities[0].ToString() + "br />"); } } Under no circumstances can I ever enumerate an object in the ResolvedEntities collection - The dialog, and target TextBox of the PeopleEditor "appear" to resolve via JavaScript on front end site.
Really lost here an no idea where to go: As this control has no click event to wire up, and with what I can find I can never get this to return anything. I haven spent literally 5 hours trying every variation, and search I can think of... to no avail.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!
Incidentally, I am noticing the Page.Response.Write( or Page.Master.Response.Write) method doesn't write anything.. I don't recall ever having this issue before in SP. I commonly use this for quick and dirty debug logging while working through exceptions from time to time.

Invalid drive letter when installing (Adobe Reader, CS3, CS4... Java... others) Map Drive Error
I've spent the last few days trying to get Adobe CS4 and Java installed on my W8 RP 64-bit setup. I hadn't had any other problems until this.
When installing a program (Any) error message says (Drive letter) R:\ drive isn't valid or is invalid.
This happens when you use a Mapped drive for your Library or other folder locations. Say you share a folder on your PC so all the PCs in the house/office can share the data, you map this drive to all pc's including the PC it's shared on. Then you map your pictures/favorites... to that new mapped drive so every system you use has the same default folder, files, favorites, documents and so on.
At this point I think you will have problem installing programs because it seems like they do not support mapped drives as locations for system folders like Profile folders. Favorites, Links, Documents...
If the drive gets disconnected or the share gets broken or say Windows Media Sync/Network Share, Zune Network Share mess up the sharing settings then you have a major mess.
I found that when the drive gets disconnected or share broken the folders do not reset to their defaults so the register refers to R:\photos for C:\users\userprofile\photos if you go to each folder and reset them this doesn't fix the issue.
Solution:
I had to regedit with search for the dead mapped folder and replace it will a local folder but for any programs would install.
I had this problem in Windows 7 Beta and RTM.
Lessons to learn do not use a mapped drive or FQDN as a location for Profile folders.
If you get an error for invalid drive (Mapped drive letter) then you might have this issue and should be able to fix it pretty fast with a regedit.

I have the same issue, except in my case, my mapped drive locations aren't dead! They are all good locations. I never had this problem with Windows 7.
Any ideas?

FYI: Windows 8 and Cisco Wireless LAN Controller incompatibility
Due to a bug in some versions of Cisco wireless LAN controller software a 802.11w-capable client, so any Windows 8 logo certified wireless NIC driver, cannot connect to an SSID on Cisco (controller-based) CUWN using WPA or WPA2 key management with AES encryption. I have written up some more on this here ; details from Cisco are on a mailing list archive here and from Microsoft here.
