CAC policy not working
I have the following Lync server 2010 installation configuration in my software firm.
Lync server standard Edition.
lyncfe.neyeball.com 192.168.0.128 (Local Front end Lync server collocated with mediation server)
lyncdc.neyeball.com 192.168.0.106 (Domain Controller and DNS server)
lyncedge.neyeball.com 192.168.0.200 (Edge server)
sip.neyeball.com 202.53.169.201
web.neyeball.com 202.53.169.202
av.neyeball.com 202.53.169.203
I want to implement CAC policy in this installation. For this, I have shut down the Edge server.
I have one subnet of 192.168.0.0/24. I have devided this into two block. 192.168.10.0/29 and 192.168.10.8/29 and place two Lync client in these two subnet with ip 192.168.10.2 and 192.168.10.10. Then I configured the Lync server with two sites having these subnet.
Site1 --> 192.168.10.0/29
Site2--> 192.168.10.8/29
Then I made a BW policy profile and applied the BW policy in both sites. Media bypass is disabled.
The policy profile was like following:
Audio limit: 0
Audio Session Limit:40 (this is the minimum)
Video limit: 0
Video Session Limit: 100( minimum)
I also executed the command "
New-CsNetworkInterSitePolicy
"
Then I tried to make call between the two Lync client1 and Client2 which subsides in Site1 and Site2 respectively. I hoped that call would not establish. But the call established perfectly. That means CAC policy was not applying.
Can anyone tell me why the CAC policy was not applied or I would be greatful if anyone can tell me what I need to do to enforce CAC policy in a single Lync server installation.

Hi ,
Can you clarify following ?
- Are these client machines are connected to same VLAN ? Is call established via peer-peer connection ?
- Enable UCCP logging and check in-band provisioning message , It should haveCAC policy information ?
Thanks

Hi,
check also that the two PDP Services are installed on your Lync Server and running. If you have deployed a Monitoring Server, you could also look for the CAC reports.

Performance issue while loading data into Huge table using SSIS package
Hi,
I have SSIS package. It is taking more time to insert data into a table. I found that, the issue is with Destination. Destination has already 1.5 Billion(150 Cr) records. Daily the package is trying to insert 15 Lakh records. Here, Is Dropping the indexes before loading and recreating them after loading improves the performance or not? Is Dropping and Recreating indexes on a huge table takes much time? Could you Please give some suggestions in this?
Reply:
15 Lakh = 1.5 Million?
Are you commiting them all at once? You will find better performance by setting your commit size to somthing other than the default of 0 (all). I'd start at 10,000 and work your way up from there.

Yes, will help loading, but then it will take time to build the index up.
Do you use the Fast Load option with table lock on (that pertains to the OLEDB destination)?
By the way, consider disabling the indexes then re-enabling.

And do you use the "table lock" option? That is important because then the table will be in a special mode allowing a faster load.
And partitioning the table under the aforesaid circumstances would not yield much performance.
I suggest you also do not let the database (target, I assume is SQL Server) autogrow - preset its size to a large enough (may near capacity of the disk) value, and if even after that the load deemed to be too slow consider using a server side tracing to figure out what stand in its way.

Windows Media Player freezes\hangs when ripping a CD
Hi,
I am having an issue when ripping a cd to my media library using media player\centre in Windows 7.
When I rip a cd media player and or media centre freezes or hangs for around 30 - 60 secs after ripping each track from the cd before continuing. When the final track of the cd has been ripped to the library media centre\player freezes up and I have to terminate the program.
I have been using the same computer for two years without any problem in this area and cd's typically used to take around 3 minutes to rip without any error.
Last week I re-installed Windows 7 and this problem surfaced. I am using all the same software as before and have not changed or added any new hardware. The music library is on a NAS drive and my other computer (located in another room also running windows 7) has no problems ripping tracks to this device quickly with no error.
I have tried using the troubleshooter (which restores media player settings to default) but this has not helped. Looking in event viewer I get the following info:
The program wmplayer.exe version 12.0.7601.17514 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.
Process ID: 948
Start Time: 01cbe427394fc68e
Termination Time: 54
Application Path: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
Report Id: 5c1e3076-501c-11e0-b98d-001921d8d35e
Action centre is not picking up this error. I have noticed when searching this problem on google that there are a couple of others with exactly the same problem but there seems to be no fix. Resetting media centre setting's does not resolve the issue, nor does changing the type of file the rip converts to (ie wma, mp3 etc). I really do no want to have to re-format and start again as this is time consuming and may not fix my issue.
Please help.
Cheers
Dr Scott

Hi Tim,
I have tried that as well. Ripping to a location on the local hard-drive makes no difference.

I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:
- Reboot the PC.
- Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service . If its status is Started , double-click the service and click Stop .
- Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
- In this folder, rename the Media Player folder to something like Media Player old . If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
- Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

I have changed the library destination for both programs to save to both a location on the local drive and on a backup drive, it does not fix the issue. since this is happening in two separate programs, i thought i might need to look at the settings that were changed when installing windows media center. Is there anything i should be looking at from a windows media center perspective to remedy this?

Best Solution?
I have been give an Excel worksheet w/ over 700 lines and 50 columns. Boss would like a dynamic ability to update the information as well as who updated it and when. I have looked at changing file to Access DB and importing and integrating into an InfoPath form. I have looked at importing as an Excel file. I thought you just need to upload your excel worksheet and put it under a document library in your SharePoint portal.
As to who updated it and when --- you can use the OOTB versioning function for this (Library -> Library settings -> Versioning Settings )
or Information Management Policy Settings for advanced auditing.

Just uploading the worksheet is not enough. With over 700 lines, they seek some control/method to pre-sort/filter the table so that the person accessing the table only sees the rows he/she is responsible for as well as know what columns were changed by this person.
That's why I was considering integrating w/ InfoPath- Edited by MGGauf Wednesday, April 4, 2012 6:11 PM

You can import the excel sheet as a custom list in the sharepoint site, that will treat each row as an item and will track the modifications, along with all the previous iterations as versions.
Hope this helps.

Why does an output parameter has to be initialized?
Hi,
at the moment we are still using PHP 5.2 and therefore we have to use the driver version 2.0. I don't know if the problem still appears in version 3.0.
I have a stored procedure with an output parameter that returns an uniqueidentifier. Therefore I have to initialize the parameter with a random GUID first. That doesn't make sense to me.
The matter with an output parameter is that I don't have any value for that parameter until I execute the stored procedure.
In September 2010 you mentioned in another thread that this problem is a design limitation. Is there a chance to be fixed soon?
Thanks,
Michael

I don't think that's it Jonathan, Michael is complaining about initialising output parameters in stored procs, and wonders whether it has been fixed yet.
In the past, an output string variable had to be pre-initialised, or the maximum length had to be passed as part of the parameter. PHP variables are supposed to be magic. Ok, to clarify, the issue you are reporting is that output parameters which are not strings are not getting the amount of memory allocated to fit the incoming data from the server. It has nothing to do with whether it's a Stored Proc, or not? :)

How to backup multiple servers (WIndows 2008 Server)
Hi,
I'm looking into using the new WSB to backup two webservers running Windows 2008 servers.
I also have a third server which I want to use as a file server, and I want to backup my two webservers to the fileserver every day.
Is this possible? I have read that WSB needs a dedicated disk on each server. So, does this mean that I cannot backup data on one server drive to a separate server?
Please help!

Are you saying that it doesn't support incremental backups when using a UNC path? A full backup everyday will be very resource intensive!
I want to store my backups off site, and I want to do them incrementally. How would I acheive this.

Reply:
Hi.
Yes, backing up to an UNC path is never incremental. I don't know what exactly you mean by off-site. But if this means: at the other site of the building, buy an inexpensive iSCSI device with inexpensive SATA disks in it. From you server, via the iSCSI initiator, connect the LUN you created on that box as a physical disk on your server. Your backup target becomes a local disk and can be used with versioning backups. Not expensive and fast enough, unless we're talking about TBs to backup.

But, I did want all the backups from all my servers to be stored on my file-server.
Would it work in reverse? By that I mean could I set up the fileserver to be the only server that runs the backup software. Then map the drives on my webservers and tell the fileserver to backup the network drives?
- "WebServer A" is Mapped as "Drive E" on my Fileserver
- "WebServer B" is Mapped as "Drive F" on my Fileserver
Then I have a dedicated backup disk on my fileserver and ALL my webservers are backup up to that disk?
btw: Yes, by "off-site" I mean keeping my backups at a different location in case of fire of theft. (for example in a fire-proof safe in another building).

You can't backup a remote UNC path. Only the backup target can be on an UNC path.
It's better to schedule the backup job on each source server and create a dedicated share on the file server for each server to backup.

Hi;
According to Microsoft, incremental backup to a network share is not supported in Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008, but this functionality is added to Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 R2.
Also, you cannot create a scheduled backup in WSB in Windows Server 2008 to store the related data in a UNC path through Windows Server Backup console (although this functionality has been added in Windows Server 2008 R2). But you can create a task -as Peter said- and use -backuptarget to to this action. For more information look at the following thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/726d3765-5f82-4590-b970-d45e17412281/#31a3ea76-fe19-44fd-a57e-25de40d2242f
I think for off-site data storage, a better option is storing backup data to an external hard drive and then moving the external hard drive to off-site location.

If incremental backups are not supported with UNC, could I do incremental backups with a mapped network drive?, or does WSB treat these the same way?

On your file server:
- Create a folder for each server to backup

The only supported scenario is just specifying a UNC path.
If incremental backups are not supported with UNC, could I do incremental backups with a mapped network drive?, or does WSB treat these the same way?
As you said, WSB treat these the same way. So, with mapped network drive, the behavior is the same when you use an UNC path.

It doesn't sound like I will be able to store my incremental backups on one server, which is what I wanted. However, I cannot afford to buy 3rd party backup software so I will just have to make do with what Microsioft have to offer.
Right now my backup routine is very much a manual and time-consuming process. I think that if I use WSB it will still be manual and time-consuming, but as they say: "beggars cant be choosers" !

sharepoint design question
we recently merged with another org and i am wanting to deploy a sharepoint server... i have a test lab setup and all is working perfect at the moment....
i wanted to get the communities opinion on installing 1 sharepoint site with each department being behind the main site... are should i make each department its own site...
i was thinking making each department it own site. but i think that may mess up security because not every department should be able to acces other departments...
your thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can create one web application but multiple site collections, site collections will allow you to assign unique permissions for each department. Moreover you can have separate databases for each site collection, data growth will be far more manageable with multiple content databases.

"Whether a sub-site or a site collection should be created when trying to address some new need in SharePoint" is a frequent question.
The answer is often confusing since there are advantages to keeping things in one site collection but there are also disadvantages.
-The first decision to make is whether you can choose to create a site collection. You many not have permission to do so. In your scenario, I assume you have the privileges (administrative rights) to do so.
- Security is the number #1 reason. With a site collection, it is guaranteed that security is separated from each other. Do you need a completely separated security set-up for each department? If yes, you should go with site collections.
- Another consideration is charge-backs/quotes, using site collection allows separate charge-backs.
- Visibility of SharePoint groups and users, in SharePoint all users of a site collection can see all of the groups in the site collection - and all of the users. so in situations where even knowing what the other groups are or who the other users are in is a problem, you will need separate site collections. for example, it is common to create separate site collections for different customers.
- Size of the new site (for each department), it you are expecting 20gb for each department, that we should go with a site collection for each department.
- Dependence, are these sub sites (departments) really related. Don't use a sub-site, if they are actually not related.
- Navigation, do you need consistent navigation for these department?

Delete all Requests in FIM Service
Hi all,
I would like to start a discussion about a problem I had. A customer generated a couple of million requests within a week or two. I tried to clean it up with several approaches that fail because the FIM Service timed out whatever I made.
1. Trying to upload the expiration date and enforce to expire the objects that the SQL agent would clean up
2. Trying to delete them via PowerShell (doesnt make sense because for each requests you log another "Delete Request"-Request)
3. Trying to create an MPR with a set... whatever; didn't work either because FIM timed out as well
Last conclusion; delete within the database directly. What i did, I check what the SQL clean up does and which stored procedures are called to clean up the expired objects. The SP FIM.DeleteExpiredSystemObjects was the one I was looking for.
So, I broke up the whole procedure into smaller parts and determined where it checks the date value and uncommented it. After that I ran it step by step to ensure that everything went well.
The procedure copies all objects which are in the filter to [fim].[ExpiredObjectKeys] and afterwards deletes wherever it has a reference. If that has been done and also validated, it deletes all objects from [fim].[ExpiredObjectKeys]. That solved it and the system got rid of the mass of requests.
Thanks god, that this was just a Q-System, but however TechNet couldn't support me and I even dont know whether this is supported or not.
Would you recommend a different approach if you would run in such an issue?
Are you doing things directly on the DB (service or sync)? Is that something which should be somewhere in technet?
Thanks for your feedback, Moritz

Hi,
Personally, I would not mess with the database if there is any other option. Even if you work with the standard stored procedures, there still is a chance you mess up you FIM configuration.
The only queries that I occasionally execute on the database is to clear all connectorspaces and the metaverse on FIM Sync. It can be very usefull for in development scenario's.

Touching data in the DB is not recommended at all and with the arrival of FIM 2010 R2, it should get more complicated due to the auditing feature. You could change the request retention time to 1 day. Once the requests are deleted, you could set it back to whatever feasible for you. Here is an article that tells you how to do that: http://www.identitychaos.com/2009/11/fim-2010-rc11-adjusting-request-object.html

Setting the request retention time to a day or two is good advice for a development environment. Getting into the database is not supported. Depending on your auditing requirements though, that might not be feasible. In that case, proper SQL maintenance is another route.
One thing I didn't notice in your post: There's a SQL job called "FIM_DeleteExpiredSystemObjectsJob" that has cleared things out for me in the past--but it's only going to delete the expired objects, so it might not have helped in your case. In my case, the job wasn't getting triggered for some reason, so I had to kick it off manually. After that, it started working on schedule. (No idea why.)

MS Outlook 2010 w/ BCM 4.00.11308.00 Outlook freezes up
I installed MS Outlook 2010 w/BCM in July 2011. It has had some issues with freezing and running very slowly but just recently, the last month, it has begun freezing up entirely. I have to launch the task manager and shut down the program. It then says, Outlook is restarting and then will work ok for a couple of emails or entering phone logs. Then it locks up again and have to follow same procedure. I am running Windows 7 Professional. I do have the Windows Live Essentials 2011 installed but am not sure what that actually supports so did not know if it was ok to uninstall. I also have the MS SQL2005 CE installed as well as MS SQL 2008. I was not sure if that could be removed safely or not.
My main question is, it appears this has been an issue for sometime for many people. Is Microsoft planning on doing anything to resolve it or is it going to be better for my company to look elsewhere for dependable software?
If anyone can help me resolve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Running Outlook 2007 and Windows 7 on a Dell Laptop.
It's been fine for two years, then a couple of days ago Outlook would freeze within a couple of minutes of starting. The only way to close it is to use Task Manager. Soimetimes it spontaneously re-runs.
It often happens twice ... but can then settle down and be OK for hours.
I'm guessing the culprit is AV or Firewall (Avast and Zonealarm respectively). They are always updating themselves - in particular ISTR that we got a completely new Zonealarm (v 10.1) very recently.
Perhaps someone can chip in with a setting to change in Avast or Zonealarm to fix this.
Otherwise I am just grinding my teeth and hoping that a future update to *something* will sort it out.

lookupField.EntityNamespace = "GeraldBCSTrinityContracts.Model";

lookupField.BdcFieldName = "CONTRACTNUMBER";
lookupField.SetSecondaryFieldsNames(new string[] { "COUNTERPARTY", "COUNTERPARTYLONGNAME", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS1", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS2", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS3", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS4", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS5", "COUNTERPARTYADDRESS6", "COUNTERPARTYTEL", "COUNTERPARTYFAX", "ENTITY", "ENTITYLONGNAME", "ENTITYADDRESS1", "ENTITYADDRESS2", "ENTITYADDRESS3", "ENTITYADDRESS4", "ENTITYADDRESS5", "ENTITYADDRESS6", "ENTITYTEL", "ENTITYFAX" });
lookupField.Required = true;
contractsLIb.Fields.Add(lookupField);
contractsLIb.Update();
When the code above runs it adds the SPBusinessDataField to only the first content type in the document library. I need it added to all the content types. If i add the SPBusinessDataField using the web ui , I get a checkbox to "Add to all content types" and it works great (it adds the column to all the content type). How can I add an SPBusinessDataField to all content types within a document library in an feature receiver?
Reply:
SPContentTypeCollection contentTypes = contractsLIb.ContentTypes; foreach(contentType in contentTypes) { contentType.Fields.Add(lookupField); contentType.Update(); } Hope this helps.

I found it:
contractsLIb.Fields.AddFieldAsXml(lookupField.SchemaXml,
false, SPAddFieldOptions.AddToAllContentTypes);
If you use addFieldAsXML insteadm you get the option to specify SPAddFieldOptions.AddToAllContentTypes

vmm backup permission
Hi all,
I would like to backup VMM using powshell "Backup-VMMServer –Path "C:\VMMBackups" -VMMServer $VMMServer". What is the minimum priviledge to backup? From the test, seems we should use VMM admin, right?
Thanks.
Roger
Reply:
Hi Roger,
Minimum priviledges for backup user is to add "backup user" to the Backup Operators group. For the test you can use admin account.

Connectivity when one of the CAS server configured in windows NLB fails
Hi
We are in test phase of Exchange 2010 migration. 2 CAS servers (same servers are using for HUB) are configured in windows NLB. If one of the servers in NLB failes then will it affect all mail flow, Outlook and OWA connectivity? How can we correct such issues other than removing the failed node from NLB
Thanks
LMS
Reply:
The use of load balancers is to divide to load and provide high availability in case on server fails. But there comes the first remark. If you use Windows NLB, you will only achieve HA if one server would be down. Windows NLB is not service aware, so if one of the Exchange service would fail, clients would still be directed to that host although the specific exchange services are unavailable. So you need a load balancer that checks your server for server availability and not just if the server responds to a ping. With a decent load balancer you can configure checks which will be performed in a regular basis to verify if the service is still available.

Hi
Thank You. So you mean to say that if one the NLB server is down then also NLB will forward the request to that particular IP, so those forwarded users will face issues. Right?
Regards
LMS

Reply:
The affect is very minimal, the users will notice that they lost conectivity (in outlook) by the bubble that pops up. the connection in outlook is quickly reconnected to the servicing CAS. when you create your NLB you create a CAS Array reserve the ip in DNS (and Windows DHCP don't want anyone else using the ip). All outlook clients point to the CAS Array as well as your owa clients
did you set up a CAS Array?

Real time synchronization in FIM 2010
Hi,
Suppose there is a base database table table1 and I have changed certain data, I want that whenever any changes are made in the table1 a trigger must be fired on each and every change which makes all the management agents run simultaneously.
The triggers must not be configured in database table SQL1.
Regards,
Anil
Reply:
Hi,
If you want a out-of-the box solution you should try www.imsequencer.com this contains a specific sql trigger that can be used to accomplish real time synchronization using SQL (or other connected systems). If you want to build something yourself you should create a AFTER UPDATE SQL trigger that executes a powershell command to start the management agents you desire. Or you build a powershell scripts that is polling some table for changes and when the changes are detected fire up the powershell script to start the management agents.
Need realtime FIM synchronization and advanced reporting? check out the new http://www.imsequencer.com that supports FIM 2010, Omada Identity Manager, SQL, ActiveDirectory and PowerShell real time synchronization!

Populate dropdown parameter list values based on date range parameters fields using SSRS 2008 R2
Hi All,
I have ssrs 2008 R2 report with two date parameters @dateFrom and @dateTo and one @categoryName dropdown list parameter. If I select @dateFrom & @dateTo parameters then based on data resulset it should populate values in @categoryName parameter. If no data is present in between those date range then it should not populate any values in the dropdown list.
Please can anybody help me with good example or code, it's very urgent.

Hi,
You have to create dataset for @cateogryname parameter this data set takes two parameter @dateFrom & @dateTo, the available values for @categoryName is from this dataset.
I hope this is helpful.

Hi,
:) are these dates manually entered or fetched from database? If it is manually entered then use "Allow null" property for date parameters and use the below idea.
If it is fetched from database, use a dataset to populate the Category parameter which accepting the prior 2 parameters as input (cascaded).

Using 2 DataSet
Hi,
My issue is...... I get 2 DataSet from DB(lets say, A and B)... 'A' procedue has 2 input parameter and 'B' has 4 input parameter. Runtime user enter the input for procedure 'A' and it produce a DataSet(empId,ProjectId,EmpName and Date) with multiple rows.
Lets output is....
empId ProjectId EmpName Date
1 p1 arun some date
2 p2 arjun some date
3 p3 paul some date
2 p1 arjun some date
1 p2 arun some date
Procedure B takes 4 inputs. Of it 2 are same as given to procedure 1 and remaining to empId and Project Id from dataset1.
For me what happens like only the first empId and project id are taken as input for the 'B' procedure. But i what all the rows(empId,ProjectId) as input to Procedure 'B'. I am assigning empId ProjectId values at the report parameter of Procedure 'B'
Is there any other way to achieve this???? Please help me...
Reply:
Hi Andrew,
Just to design the report, Use the cascading parameter. Let me explain step by step process
- Have 4 parameters. First 2 are manually entered by the user
- Procedure A uses 2 parameters and produces result (empId,ProjectId,EmpName and Date)
- Procedure A is used to populate the parameters 3 and 4
Now use all the 4 parameters in your report

QAM Channel Tuning & Mapping Issues of Media Center [Windows 7 RC x32]
INCORRECT /CUMBERSOME AT BEST QAM CHANNEL MAPPING
I set up TV signal on Win 7's Media Center, and the two QAM tuners were recognized without an issue.
In order to set up EPG, I entered the correct zip code and cable provider.
Yet the channel line up after channel scans is messed up.
The channel numbering is different for QAM than ATSC. However, is there anything you can do about that? I believe it's just a database issue as Media Center automatically downloads channel lineups for specific regions. For instance, having two sets of database, one for ATSC and the other for QAM would solve this issue?
In my case, both CBS HD and NBC HD channels on the EPG were tied to the CBS HD channel, meaning whichever channel I chose on EPG, it took me to CBS shows. How is it possible that the same digitnal channel number (CBS) ends up being recognized and tied to more than one channel on the EPG?
SENSITIVITY ISSUE
In the Edit Channel Lineup section, I found many channels that did not have any channel assignments, however, after watching all unencrypted channels with no assignments, I discovered that NBC had not been picked up during the channel scan. I unsuccessfully scanned a few more times trying to pick up NBC. And I know that my cable provider does send QAM NBC, from my TV set's QAM scans, and scans using another computer program (Snap Stream's Beyond TV) with the same tuner hardware . My Pinnalce PCTV also picked up QAM NBC through a Pinancle tuner without any difficiulty. I have not tired QAM tuning on Media Center with the Pinnale tuner yet.
QAM is newer than ATSC which Media Center has been a front runner in handling. If Snap Stream can do it, so can Microsoft. I hope QAM related issues will be resolved by the official release of Win 7.

I noticed that when a channel number is for instance 104.2, Media Center seems to have missed that channel IF there's another channel that is right beofre in number, in this case 104.1. Media Center's automatic scans picked up 104.1 but missed 104.2.
I have other tuners and tuning programs, and that's the only reason why I had QAM channel numbers. The average user would not be able to watch NBC here. :s

However, the system will note every channel detected - but, if there's no in-band data, it won't be in the Guide. Reason: no data = "I don't know where to put it; therefore, I won't try to.)
In Media Center, go to Tasks > Settings > TV > Guide > Edit channels. Select 'show preview' (channel will be displayed in the background, so you can tell what the inf-less (or wrong-info) channel is), and start scrolling thru the list.
Here you can enable "missing" channels, assign them to a Guide listing, change the listing info, and so on. You can also disable unwanted channels (bye-bye, shopping channels!)
Once everything is done properly, HD channels will be assigned as sub-channels of the primary (analog) channel (e.g.: Fox is channel 2 for me; the HD channels are listed as 2.1 and 2.2)
The reason that the 'physical channel numbers' are different for QAM (as opposed to ATSC) is, well, because they're QAM. The cable co puts the actual channels wherever they see fit; it's up to the equipment that's tuning it to make sense of it. They do this with analog, too: my local 50 (OTA) is 5 (cable); local 20 (OTA) is 6 (cable.)

Thanks for your reply Chris. Yes, I did go to that Edit channel section to find out channels that had been picked up but had no channel assignments for. Knowing all QAM channel numbers from another HTPC soft, I could easily look for specific channel numbers and identify what channels they were even without seeing Previews of them. But the channel number for NBC (and another minor channel) was not among those picked up channel numbers. I guess they were those channels you are talking aobut. I manually added them. Not an issue for me personally, but what could I have done to watch NBC if I had not had channel numbers from another HTPC soft??
I just hope something can be done about this, and to make the mapping easier for the average person as people around here would not use ATSC (signal distortion problems due to skyscrapers and planes/helis in the sky).
I have used other softwares whose scans were not driven by downloaded data, they simply recorded all channel numbers that they picked up (including NBC) so it awas irrelevant whether there was in-band data for the channels. And displayed all channels except ones that were encrypted. And I watched the channels that actually could be displayed to me (caz they were unencrypted) and linked ones I wanted to watch to downloaded channel lineup, though ones that didn't show up on the downloaded guide, I could still name them however I wanted and keep, and only the channels that are linked and I chosed to keep got displayed on EPG.
The point is, isn't it better to REVERSE what Media Center does? I mean in stead of relying on downloaded data in scanning, why doesn't it give us a list of channels that are not encrypted, then ask us to name them / link them to downloaded data? If it was streamed lined that way, I think Media Center would work great for the average person. Does it actually make more sense to do it that way if cable companies insert channels wherever they see fit, and the database cannot be kept upto date all the time for every region of the world?
Just my thoughts. ..

There's an interesting point that I haven't seen addressed.... a moderately "dumb" HD TV will find the channels, and assign a useable numbering scheme. I have four different HD TV's, and if I do a channel scan, they ALL map the same ATSC (antenna) or analog and QAM (cable) channels. Now MCE (win7 32 HP and 64 Ult) does not find all of the channels, nor does it map all the channels it finds to the same numbering scheme as the "dumb" TV's. I initially found many of the missing MCE channels by using the tuner manufacture's software (Hauppauge): it found and listed the channel/service numbers and identified the station call signs from the data stream using the same hardware configuration that runs win7 MCE.
I have setup four win7 MCE machines using various Hauppauge 950Q (USB), HP (USB), and Hauppauge 2550 (PCI Express) tuners. All had virtually identical problems with the MCE Guide.
I can ADD the missing channels to the MCE Guide, then EDIT the Guide listings to have the correct display channel number, and then, still in EDIT, change the Guide program listing. But it takes 30-60 minutes to manually enter all of the correct data.
So, the question becomes if a "dumb" TV can get it right, why can't win7 MCE?
This all leads to another question... How can I save the channel Guide information, and move it to a different machine, or back to the first machine?
This is an issue as I take my laptop with MCE to different areas around the country. While my home is in northern San Diego County (cable), I frequently travel to Tucson (antenna), Orlando (antenna), and Saint Louis (antenna). I'd like to save the corrected channel lineup for each location and restore it as needed.
