Windows 7 Activation Failed behind FTMG 2010 SP1

Windows 7 Activation Failed behind FTMG 2010 SP1

hi

we are having FTMG 2010 SP! running On Windows Server 2008 R2 acting as proxy server with Basic Authentication.

Now when a user say Windows 7 tries to Activate the Windows 7 it gives error Error Code 0x8004FE33

I have gone through the documents on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921471 with method 2 by creating a rule as below

Created Domain Set as mentioned list in the above link and allowed the traffic from Internal Network to Domain Set with permisison to all users. still i'm getting the error

i need to keep basic authentication.

Reply:

Hi Devang,

can you check in Logging that the appropriate rule matches, when you try to activate Win7?

Please be aware that TMG processes the ruleset regarding the order number of the rule.

So that means that maybe an other rule with a lower order number can match first and.

Please check this in logging.

Markus

But i got Access Denied while running the code. It works fine if i run visual studio as Run as administrator.

Now my question is i have all enough rights, even though i got access denied.

So what went wrong here.? I dnt want to run visual studio as Administrator rights.

Please advise me

Hi Arvind,

You can enable this as follows:

  1. Right-click the Visual Studio icon and select properties
  2. On the Shortcut tab (the default tab) select Advanced

Select Run as administrator

This will work on any program, and on any OS with user access control (Vista, Windows 7, …).

In order to be able to do this you must be added to the Administrators group on the local machine. If you don't have the permissions to do this, login with an account that has enough permissions, or login with the local administrator account.

You can do this in the Edit local users and groups program (Start –> Search programs and files… type users):

Some SharePoint site names may need to be changed before transitioning to Office 365

If your BPOS organization has created a top-level site in BPOS that uses the word 'sites', 'teams', 'search', 'personal', 'my', or 'admin', then you will need to rename that site before transitioning to Office 365 (example: https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites.)  The new SharePoint 2010 architecture used in Office 365 uses these words as managed paths and therefore does not allow the site names to transition from BPOS.

How to differentiate between Microsoft Lync and Communicator 2007 R2 when doing a query

Just wanna ask, right now i want to do a search query to search any machine that has Microsoft Lync install. Im planning to do a search query like below:

Software Files.File Name is like "lync process name"

and

Computer System.System Type is like "x86%"

But problem is, i see that the .exe of Lync and Communicator 2007 R2 is the same, which is communicator.exe. How can i differentiate? Or is it any other way i can do it to search for Lync software installed on my client machine...?

Symantec netbackup and SharePoint 2010

We have just started using Symantec Netbackup with Sharepoint 2010 (SQL Server 2008R2).

Whereas this will backup the farm we also have a non-sharePoint database hosted on the same SQL server box that needs to be backed up in the same timeframe as the SharePoint Farm.

Can anyone suggest as to how we can carry out this backup? Is there a way to get NetBackup to recognise that the database is part of the SharePoint App and needs to be backed up as well?

How does SharePoint recognise the databases attached to it and hence NetBackup recognise these same databases?

Any advise appreciated.

Adrian

The NetBackup for SharePoint agent will only backup SQL databases which belong to SharePoint enumeration. If you have other external databases on the SQL server, you'll have to use the NetBackup for SQL agent to protect the external databases.

Hi,

As far as I know, The NetBackup for SharePoint agent will only backup SQL databases which belong to SharePoint enumeration.

In addition, since NetBackup supports many backup types, which one did you use?

To perform backups and restores, NetBackup must know the user name and password of the account for the SharePoint Administrator. NetBackup also requires this information so you can browse for SharePoint objects when you create a backup policy. NetBackup validates the user name and password you provide.

This account must meet some requirements, for the detailed information, please check

FIM + OCS2007 + LYNC 2010

Hi team, i´m new in this forum and i'm expecting this could be a great option to deal with specific FIM doubts. Actually i want to know how OCS2007/LYNC2010 could be integrated with FIM2010. Is there any documentation about it available?

Reply:

You can easily provision OCS 2007 using FIM 2010.  OCS 2007 provisioning is basically just updating LDAP addributes in Active Directory.

Lync 2010 is different.  Lync relies on Powershell cmdlets for provisioning.  These cmdlets make direct calls to SQL instead of just modifying LDAP attributes.  I'm not sure what the best way is to provision with FIM or if they'll come out with specific Lync integration for FIM.  Was kind of hoping we'd see an answer from Microsoft on this.

Have gotten any other answers to this question?

Sounds like you'll need some workflow activities to do the PowerShell. I just have a generic PowerShell WF activity so it's fairly easy to wire up these scenarios. The other option is an XMA but that's alot more complex.

Brian, can you post your powershell and workflow for enabling Lync users?

Opper,

at the end, i enabled LYNC service for new users just runing the following powershell script:

  • Import-Module 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2010\Modules\Lync\Lync.psd1'
  • $today = "{0:MM/dd/yyyy} 00:00 AM" -f (Get-Date)
  • Get-CsAdUser -Filter {WhenCreated -gt $today} | Enable-CsUser -RegistrarPool "lync-std.domain.com" -SipAddressType SamAccountName -SipDomain domain.com

At first, i tried to create a Custom Workflow to do it through FIM, but didn't find a very clear documentation about how to create a functional Custom Workflow. So if any body there can share a Step-by-Step guide about it please is very welcomed (please no refer to "Introduction to Sequential Workflows" as it didn't say so much and it's a very different scenario than provisioning).

Thanks in advance.

Hey thats sneaky.

So you have a PS script running on the Lync 2010 server polling the AD DC for recent Accounts. It will work I guess..

Just a couple of points I would like to raise.

Customers are billed $$$ per Lync account. How do you sort the newly created AD accounts into those that should get Lync 2010 accounts from those (e.g. admin accounts, test accounts etc..) who should NOT get Lync 2010 accounts?

How do you maintain them i.e. sync  lync address with a changed email address (e.g. on marriage/divorce)

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thinking more on this sneaky Fernando approach..

I notice the lack of any one replying to Fernando's request about step-by-step WF/custom activity on this subject.

My way is a kludge and relies on having a PS script being called now and then on the Lync server.. much depends how "hot" a customer wants his Lync accounts to be.. but this could work. For the life of me I cant see how this is plugged inside of the FIM set up though. This assumes that a User's Lync address is same as the Email address...

Arrange FIM to write the text "NEW" on extensionattribute2 say (or maybe own extended schema attribute) when FIM creates new accounts and/or write text "CHANGE" to extensionattribute2 whenever FIM changes the Email address.

On the Lync server, Poll for ad accounts having non-null extensionattribute2. Those with "NEW" get Email from AD account and call Enable-CSUser cmdlet. Those with "CHANGE" get the Email from ad and call Set-CSUser cmdlet

After the (successful) PS calls, nullify the extensionattribute2 value.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Fortunately that case was very very simple as my customer assigned lync to every user in the organization. Otherwise, i would need to write a custom workflow or develop a connector for lync.

FYI, I wrote an App that will automate Lync accounts.. check it out.

Adding a free form text control to an RCDC

Hi FIM Community! I have a requirement to update the Group Editing RCDC in my FIM deployment. Specifically, when a user wants to add an account to a Security Group there needs to be a field where they can enter a "Business Need" for the update, which will then be added to the email that goes out to the group owner asking for approval. I have created an attribute called "Business Need" and added it to the RCDC but I can't figure out how to make the text that the requester enters in the field to then populate in the email that is sent to the group owner. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

ClassicShell 3.5.0 Now Available - The Start Button Savior of Windows 8 CP?

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Ivo Beltchev has come through today!  Feast your eyes on Start Menu goodness in Windows 8...

It's not a workalike for the standard Windows 7 Start menu - it's more like its predecessors, but quite usable!  Perhaps the author will consider adding a "classic" Windows 7 menu at some point in the future.

He's also fixed the missing Internet Explorer 10 title in the title bar.

Ten million kudos and then some to Ivo Beltchev, ClassicShell's author - a titan among software superheroes in these modern times!

Note that it has a quite functional search box, so it's not as inadequate as you might think.  What are you not seeing that you think you'd want to see?

Having used the Windows 7 out-of-the-box Start menu myself, so far this seems pretty straightforward to use.

Try it before you judge it.  I suggest turning down some of the configurable delays so it's even more responsive.  In fact, it's a good idea to review all of the many configuration settings...  There are a LOT of customizations so you can have your cake and eat it too, just the way you might like it (e.g., one possibility is a mouse-activated Start Menu but a Win key activated Metro Start screen).

It definitely feels at home in Windows 8.

Ivo has said, since I posted the above, that he will NOT be working on a Windows 7 classic shell, so what it is is what it is.  Like Ivo, I have no desire for an accumulating list of programs I have to read through, and which will change over time, but I do agree that it's a feature that is not emulated.

Ivo has also said on his forum that he's working on trying to find a decent "boot right to the desktop" scheme so watch for updates.

I'll see if I can change it from a question to a discussion if that's important to you.

I've tried Classic Shell now, and it seems like the best Start Menu replacement so far. However, it's still incomplete.

1. It's missing the MFU list from Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

2. There needs to be a way to access Metro-style apps from the desktop, disabling the Metro Start Screen entirely. When I log on, I should be able to go directly to the desktop with the Start Menu enabled. If I want to access a Metro-style app, I should be able to run it from within the desktop (though still in a full-screen mode) and I should be able to switch back and forth between Metro-style apps and desktop apps using the Taskbar. Sadly, it might not be possible to do this with a Windows program.

It doesn't have an MFU list but it does have an MRU (Most Recently Used) list for programs. You will have to go to its settings, enable All Settings and customize away. The interface is self-explanatory and you can hover over anything to see tooltip help. As for Metro apps, it will never ever have a way to launch those because Metro apps are a joke and not worthy of Classic Shell.

This is interesting.  However, I probably would only consider it for home use.  In our corporate environment, I can't see that we would allow a 3rd party menu system to be deployed.  If there were security holes patched, or just plain updated versions, how would you be able to push out that update to all your remote computers, etc?  How often are those updates created?  Would you be stuck in a never ending loop of manually updating this thing on thousands of computers?  Plus, we just simply wouldn't trust becoming reliant on such basic functionality for our Operating System with a 3rd party developer that may, or may not be around tomorrow.

(It truly is unfortunate at how closed minded Microsoft has become with including a functional Start Menu and which interface to boot into for Windows 8.)

------------------------------------
Reply:

Well, it's an open source project, so you could scour it for security holes yourself.  As far as I can tell, it's put together better than many Microsoft components.

It updates itself, though I have no idea whether its update scheme can be redirected to your own update server.

If Microsoft doesn't come out with a Start menu, and you wouldn't use 3rd party software (even very good 3rd party software), I guess you're stuck without a Start menu.

I think this looks really quite nice. I do however have to agree with KHemmelman. As fantastic as I think this is, being open source I unfortunately can't see large cooperation use this. I have doubts the company I work for would ever approve it because they only want products that come with a service contract.

That being said, I think this is a great product and I do hope that MS takes example of it. I think its one of the major key components needed for our move away from W7. If we do never see the MS start menu again, I can easily see this being on just about every non-corporate W8 box out there.

------------------------------------
Reply:

KHemmelman:

A big problem i see is the parasitic nature of this type of program.  Not being part of the kernel, it must run in its own space, monitoring for actions on the screen, memory, and kernel, and so eats cycles way beyond what that count would be if it were part of the kernel as it so obviously belongs.

Even the vendor's page on the product talks about cycle management, so the impact is not inconsequential.

No, this does nothing for me, and as you say, the corporate world isn't likely to adopt it unless Microsoft or another large player gains ownership and provides the level of service and ownership befitting something that proves a core level experience.

Microsoft needs to grow a pair and put the menu back.  Arrogance is great in a closed social circle where your actions and decisions can affect comparatively few.  But Sinofski's actions potentially effect hundreds of millions.  Does Microsoft REALLY want to let one man's ego captain this particular ship?

DAS

------------------------------------
Reply:

Noel, we could look for security holes, but that's not our area of expertise, so effectively 'no', we can't do that.  It does look well done and put together, but that's aside from my point or the concerns we would have.  As far as updates, I wonder if you have to be a local administrator for that.  None of our standard users are administrators, so that's another potential problem.

I do agree with you that we are going to be stuck without a real Start Menu in Windows 8 though.

Win7Tester's response hit the nail on the head of ego blocking the ability to make an adjustment and put the Start Menu back in the Desktop Interface.  It would hurt nobody to have a Windows 7 style Start Menu in the Desktop Interface and be beneficial to many.  It makes no sense to not do this, so I can only come to the conclusion that it really is the arrogant ego of a small, closed minded group steering this ship.  (Which makes me think of the Kansas song, "Point of No Return" for some reason.)

------------------------------------
Reply:

Don't discount the possibility that Microsoft really is planning to bring the Start menu back right at release time, and that all this Preview stuff has been designed specifically to force people through Metro on purpose, since that's what they want to generate the greatest buzz about, and of course they want to have people actually test the "bold new" stuff the most.

As far as something like ClassicShell running as it does vs. something Microsoft provides being "integrated into the kernel", you're making a distinction that's just not real (and as it turns out exactly backwards).  Everything that runs as part of a system uses the support facilities in that system to work.  There's no reason to believe ClassicShell is less efficient than whatever components used to run the Microsoft Start menu...  In fact, it's plainly obvious (by how quickly it puts up its displays) that it's a good bit MORE efficient than Microsoft's code - which is not really surprising.  Compare the expansion of the Control Panel entries by ClassicShell to that of the Windows 7 Start menu some time as an example.

You are using programmed delays that were put there so things didn't move TOO fast, with something that can't afford those delays by the programmers own admission.  I don't recall the start menu getting slower and slower as more programs were installed, but the guy that wrote the "savior" goes into fair detail on how to try and keep the speed at a moderate pace.

If you think I have it backwards and an addon product is going to be ever bit as fast as the manufacturers embedded code to perform the same task, lets just agree to disagree.  And you might want to tell the "savior" programmer he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about either.

DAS, sure, we can disagree, that's okay.  I'm not sure what specific language of Ivo's you're having a problem with, but I don't really feel like debating what other people have written; I haven't looked at all the code, and don't intend to or simply can't in the case of Microsoft's stuff.  Just know that you're talking to someone with three and a half decades of software engineering experience here, and who knows in his heart of hearts that object-oriented programming is for the birds when it comes to actually getting things done efficiently.  :)

That was one of the cool things about that series (all of them really, but where to draw the line?), they could reference earlier stuff for the older timers and get a knowing nod and a smile, while the newcomers thought the new version (only version to them) carried some interesting "fresh" viewpoint.

The inside joke as it were.

At times it seemed like a tacit admission "coming up with new ideas is tough, might as well toss the old timers a bone".

(Halfway expecting: "are you sure that's Scotty?  Isn't he an old overweight guy?...)

I wonder how many folks can say they saw those episodes when they were first run.  We were both right ("It's" vs. "It is").  :)  Glad you took my response with the humor intended.

There's far too little humor in the world nowadays.

ClassicShell continues to impress.  I needed to get to some system setting, I forget what it was, earlier today and without thinking I clicked the Start button, typed in what I wanted in the search box, and just hit return.  Hey!  That worked.  Nice.

In case you want to add the original Windows orb back instead of the Classic Shell orb, use this image: http://i.imgur.com/9tAAy.png in the Start Menu settings -> Start button tab. :) Two menu styles I used in the past (Classic White and Claude Black).

I like Ivo's orb.  By it specifically not being Microsoft's it feels a bit like a minor victory over the silliness that eliminated the button in the first place.

Helping end users to have a small mailboxes

Hell All,

I am not sure if this is the right forum to use. We are looking for a document or a blog that can help educate end users on how to manage their Outlook, mainly to limit their mailbox size. Currently all Outlook/Exchange users don't have a limit on the size of their mailboxes and some of the users have a really huge mailboxes. We agreed on a storage quota on mailboxes, but before we implement the change, we need to communicate to the end users that they need to delete unwanted items, but best practices on how to manage their mailboxes.

One of my colleges informed me that he had seen a document over the internet that discuss this topic and provide step by step for end users. I have searched the web and could not find it.

Thanks,

Yassar

How to get person/gorup picker field in workflow code

Hello,

I have created a custom task form and placed a person/group picker. It has group, pc:person, DisplayName, AccountId and AccountType properties. I dont know how to reference this person/group picker in the sharepoint 2010 workflow using visual studio. Please correct the following code.

 SPTaskChanged_AftProp.AssignedTo = SPTaskProperties.ExtendedProperties("WhichFieldName?").ToString

Thanks in advance

Hello Marreena,

To get the value of person/group picker field first you have to use following code.

if (person.Accounts.Count > 0)  {   PickerEntity pe1 = (PickerEntity)person.Entities[0];   Hashtable entity1 = pe1.EntityData;  }

Then you can use entity1["AccountName"].ToString() for AssigedTo .

*Here I assume that your person/group picker control ID id "person" and as we can select multiple person or group in that control so I am using the first one only.

You are modifying info path form. That's why i think, you need to use the XPATH of control and convert it into people picker in code.

Log shipping (secondary database is in standby mode)

I have a very big database , during reindexing the log backup become 80 GB ,database is in logshipping and secondary database is in standby mode, how can i prevent such a hugh file which contain reindexing log to go to the secondary server in sql server 2000.

Reply:

Possible solutions:

1. If point in time data recovery is not must or bulk log operation is not expected during the reindex operation Consider using Bulk-Logged recovery model for your log shipping. I repeat that be cautious because it may affect your point in time recovery. Read below before doing so:

Restore Under the Bulk-Logged Recovery Model : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186229.aspx

and Considerations for Switching from the Full or Bulk-Logged Recovery Model : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190203.aspx

2. Another solution can be to go for custom Log shipping which will be intelligent to switch from FULL to BULK-LOGGED and back to FULL, but that can be done only at the time of non business hours where no user will be connected to the user database since it requires to be in Single User mode.

Also I will suggest to read http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/sqldisasterrecovery/thread/bb1aa993-4f13-4010-8ff8-8b5a689b4e47

Hope it helps.

thnx ajay...

actually i have a database of 200 gigs with log shipping configured and it has a table of around 140 gigs. every night i need to rebuild the index because of which my log file becomes huge. and the corresponding log backup increases about 40 gigs.(even when i rebuild with bulk log)

to send transaction log backup (40 gig) over the network to the secondary server is a hurculine task, which fails almost every time.

is there any solution by which i can reduce the size of this transaction log backup.?

and what if i dont need to rebuild a index in secondary database.?

Reply:

After seeing the backup size(40GB) of the transaction log file and database size(200GB) I have few suggestions:

1.   Go for stripped backup of transaction log which will backup the transaction log in multiple smaller files. With this, chances network failure for transferring a huge backup file will be less, because the size of one backup files will be quite smaller. Also if any of the file copy fails, the administrative overhead and consumed time will be quite less. The number of stripes is up to you to decide based on network throughput. I will advise not to go above 4GB because of old server build.

Stripped backup example below where a transaction log backup is getting divided into 6 chunks:

backup log testdb to
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_1.trn',
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_2.bak',
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_3.trn',
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_4.trn',
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_5.trn',
                 disk='c:\temp\testdb_6.trn'
                 with init
2.       The other option would be to migrate from SQL Server 2000 to 2008 and choose compressed backup.

3.       Also looking at the size I would advise to go for some compression tool such as SQL LiteSpeed, BMC Backtrack, and Redgate etc.

4.       You can even advise to go for SQL Server 2005/2008 database mirroring.

5.       If it is very high transactional system even SAN/SRDF can be a good solution.

Hope that helps.

Just for the record, changing your recovery mode from FULL to BULK-LOGGED before re-indexing will not reduce the size of your transaction log backups.

Agree.

Then you probably might think of stripped backup OR Compressed backup OR DB Mirroring.

I think you meant striped backups, not stripped backups. The original post is for SQL Server 2000. Backup compression is a feature of SQL Server 2008 and above and DB Mirroring of SQL Server 2005 and above. This means that only striped backups are an option, but that will only work towards improving backup performance, it will not have any chance of reducing the size of the transaction log backups. Striping could also complicate the log shipping scenario.

You can read about SQL 2000 backups here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa225964(v=sql.80).aspx

And here is a good article describing the syntax and behavior in SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000 to achieve striped backups:

Instead of doing a rebuild, just do defrag of the table which is huge, which will not need too much of log space and see whether it is helpful. Got to see this link by Kimberly Tripp and Paul Randal . Check this out

Once this is done, you can get a maintenance window once in a month or something like that do reindex. During this time, you can break logshipping and then recreate again.

Unfortunately I have the same problem as yours. and I am dealing it now in this way.

Managing DL Group Membership in Cross-Forest Migration

So I'm currently in the midst of a cross-forest AD/Exchange Migration.  For several reasons, my first step is going to be migrating the mailboxes from Forest A's 2003 Exchange org, to Forest B's 2010 Exchange org.

I'm currently using the AD GAL MA for managing GAL sync between the 2 forests.  I've successfully used the Exchange 2010 powershell prepare-moverequest.ps1 script for converting the ILM contact into a mail enabled user, and subsequently the new-moverequest to move perform a cross-forest mailbox move.

Now however, I am challenged with trying to migrate the Distribution Groups and mail enabled Security Groups from Forest A to Forest B.  I can use ADMT to migrate the group, but this does not handle the exchange attributes, nor can it add the contacts created from the GAL MA to the ADMT migrated group.  This is obviously breaking mail flow using the migrated DL's.

I'm assuming it should be possible to create a 3rd and 4th AD MA that will import the group from Forest A into the metavers, then export the group to Forest B, and subsequently add the associated contacts that already exist in the metaverse, to the group membership of the new group in Forest B.

I simply don't have the skill set to create the MA or provision the rules to make such a thing happen.  I'd hate to have to go out and purchase the quest tools to handle this portion.

Any help???

Select products on autonomous downstream server

Hi,
We have 1 Central WSUS 3.0 SP2 server witch downloads all updates for all products from MS.
We have servall downstream autonomous servers. They need to be able to select their products to download, because they don't need all the updates and don't have that much storage.

I think it should be possible also because the design documentation says "Downstream WSUS servers must be administered separately".

Please advice.

Kind regards,
