CBT Nuggets First Look: Windows 8 and Server 2012

CBT Nuggets have made their complete "First Look" series for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 available for free on YouTube. The Windows 8 series contains 13 videos, and the Windows Server 2012 series contains 15, for a combined length of almost 6 hours.

The series is presented by one of my all-time favorite trainers, Microsoft MVP and PowerShell expert, Don Jones. Don is an excellent presenter, and the content is first rate, so I believe you're going to love this training. Enjoy.

Quite honestly, I would not expect this error within a VM.

If these VMs have Dynamic Memory enabled, turn it off.

Also, what is the application you are running in the VMs.  This is frequently an issue caused by an application.

And, have you tested your physical RAM??

Comparision between SSRS and BO .. Advantages of SSRS

I am looking for comparision between SSRS and Business Objects.. Any information or links would be of great help

   Hi,

I have worked on both Reporting Tools and frankly each has pros and cons. I may be able to compare BO WebI with SSRS where SSRS has advantage that,

 1) Almost everything possible in WebI can be accomplieshed in SSRS. Way of doing it may be different.

 2) SSRS is Free if yout have SQL Server.  Very Very cost effective solution.

 3) Very good Support from Microsoft to this product.

 4) SQL 2005 Onwards, there is contineous enhancement of this reporting platform and as MS has realised importance of BI over it , it will be contineous enhancing.

 5) Integration with almost all sort of custom applications, Sharepoint and Other tools.

 6) Ready availability if resources or developers.

 Hope this helps :)

So I went to  my calendar page and set the webpart to display as a fixed width of 900 px.

The calendar now prints properly (even in the 2013 preview!)

Robocopy copies files where there were no changes

I've set up Robocopy for backups to a USB drive stuck I my wireless router. The syntax used, in a .bat file, is:

SET CopyFrom="C:\Users\Gene\My Documents"
SET CopyTo="B:\My Notebook Backup"
SET MyLog="C:\Robocopy Backup\RobocopyBackup.log"

robocopy %CopyFrom% %CopyTo% /MIR /ZB /R:2 /W:4 /Tee /Log:%MyLog%

Task Scheduler runs the bat file every night.

There are 2 problems, perhaps related. First, every night the whole backup runs and takes about 2.5 hrs., rather than backing up just the files that were added or changed that day, which would take a lot less time.

Second, the log file shows error 5 right at the end. The log states error 5, changing file attributes. B:\My Notebook Backup, access is denied. B is the drive letter for my wireless router. My Notebook Backup is the folder on the USB stick stuck in the router where backups are directed to by the syntax above.

How do I get Robocopy to backup only files changed or added each day instead of re-copying all files and folders each day?
The computer runs Windows 7 64 bit. The USB stick was reformated as NTFS.

Hi,

Based my knowledge and research, we may not be able to achieve your requirement via Robocopy commands. It can excludes changed files not includes.

Please refer to this.

For access denied issue, please ensure the right NTFS permission of "B:\My Notebook Backup".

Thank you for the responses. The problem is the permissions for the B drive, which is my wireless router. The USB stick, when attached directly to the PC shows Full Control. But in the router Special Permissions is checked and greyed. Checking Full Control to Everyone, or any of the other 2 choices, gives an Access Is Denied message.  I cannot figure out how to overcome that issue. If I could, file attributes could be set and read, and the problem solved. Do you know how to gain Full Control of a stubborn wireless drive?

Try connecting it locally, and making Everyone the Owner, and assigning Full permissions to Everyone, then set the inherit permissions option..

Outlook 2010 Calendar Print - PLEASE give us a "Calendar Printing Assistant" that is fully compatible with 2010.

I really need a calendar printing assistant that will combine the overlayed calendars into one for printing. I can't imagine why it's just not a simple option to have within outlook. But if you could please give us an updated vesrsion of "Calendar Printing Assistant for Outlook 2007", that would be acceptable. I can use the assistant for 2010. But it's sloppy and cumbersome until I work through some formating.  And please don't refer me to a third party... I'm already using a third party for functions I need. A fourth party would make the third party obsolete and put me back to square one. Please just intergrate something with outlook. Otherwise, I love the program.

Hi Tim,

I have started the Synch engine upgrade on our Dev server and am at 20 Hours of install time at this screen.

Our dev server has a lot of data in it so I wil let it run over the weekend and see if it finishes.

We had to resort to plan on upgrading from FIM 2010  Ver: 3617 to R2 to see if tis fixes our extensible MA and

Lotus Notes MA headaches. So far, no word from our Microsoft support tech on fixing the 3617 issues.

Hello

  1. We have seen the Synchronization Service upgrade from FIM 2010 to R2 take as long as 5 days.  As long as it keeps running, please let it run.  If for some reason it crashes, then please get a windows installer verbose log and open a support case.
  2. ECMA issue.  I am not certain what issue you are actually experiencing there, but here are a few bullets to think about:
  3. (a) Ensure that the Microsoft.MetaDirectoryServicesEx.DLL is the correct build.  If not, you may need to extract it from the MSP and update it
  4. (b) You may try re-registering the file into the GAC using GacUtil.Exe
  5. (c) You may try recompiling the ECMA
  6. (d) You also will want to check the binding re-direct is correct in the miiserver.exe.config file
  7. Lotus Notes MA Headaches:  Yes, we in support have had those migraines as well.  LOL!  In a huge effort, a new Lotus Notes Connector is coming out.  Please keep an eye out for KB 2741896 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741896 ).  It is not public as of yet, and is going through some revision.  Once this is public it will direct you to the new Lotus Notes Connector.

I really hope this information helps you out.

Tim, this is actually good news.

I saw a PerfLib error at hour 30 and thought it was locked up but when I ran the SQL Activity monitor, it showed the synch service still processing selects and "suspended" writes, so it is still running.

The only issue I have with this is that doing this in production will probably not be practical. I can do a new install, turn off provisioning and run my initialization FIFSs in 3 days. My dev server is a small horsepower box though, so my monster synch servers may do this in less time.

Thanks for the new post though! I can at least sleep tonight.

Mike W.

Reply:

Mike,

Yes, the stronger boxes should resemble faster upgrade times.  The 5 day upgrade that we saw was in a DEV environment.  In the production environment with much stronger hardware, it took 14 hours.

The key thing to remember, is to have a good amount of RAM on the SQL Server.  I would recommend at-least 16GB, if not more.  Ensure that there is adequate disk space.  My personal rule of thumb is to have my free space be double the size of my MDF and/or LDF files.

Hi,

It depends on your needs.

Yes there is a best practice but what do you need then think about what to use.

The reason is limitations in the UI, so we go for VS.

If you for example want to create list or specific columns or create SharePoint group once your feature is activated which create content types, then definitely this is visual studio.

If normal and nothing especial then why consume the time in development when it can be done in minutes from the UI.

So the idea is know what do you need first.

If you need while list is created to create SharePoint group or run a specific WF ... etc then develop in VS.

Again what you are saying, can be done from UI, so why consume the time in VS, when it can be done in minutes from UI.

Right?

Hi Mai Omar,

thanks for your reply.

Do you mean,if we can achieve something directly there is no need to touch VS.many times it is difficult to decide OOTB UI vs VS approach  (e.g creating a simple content type or a content page). Also ,I am not able to find any guidelines anywhere.

Thanks

------------------------------------
Reply:

I don't know why you see it difficult. You are even saying "creating a simple content type or a content page"

Content page, just create new page from site actions. why you need VS??? Unless you want to add control to the page that doesn't exists in SharePoint, like slide animation may be.

Content type, just go to site columns and create your columns then go to content type and create one from the type needed like event or item or document library and add existing columns then from your list or library add content type.

Now where is the need here for VS ... just for UI ...

Think first what do you need. Unless you want to make it easier for yourself and just say here the needs exactly and then we can tell you this is UI or VS.

And all Best practices all over the internet does not know your needs.

Task Sequence - Cannot create ActiveX component

Hi All,

I’m trying to figure out a rather strange issue.

I’ve got a Windows 7 SP1 x86 install Task Sequence that runs a hard-linked USMT state capture/state restore. The Task Sequence runs a number of VB Scripts (command lines) to do things like Rename Computer, Move OU, Set Time Zone etc.

When I test the end-to-end build process on a Virtual Machine, everything works perfectly fine.

When I test the end-to-end build process on a physical machine, I get errors when trying to run VB scripts but those sequenced after State Restore. In the case of a vbscript used to Rename Computers, this has to run after State Restore so I need this to work.

The problem running scripts only occurs if State Restore is enabled (and runs). After State Restore has ran, no VB Scripts that require "CreateObject" can be used from the OSD Task Sequence. I’m yet to test if the problem exists without a hard-link USMT (and instead use a State Migration Point).

The smsts.log error I get when attempting to run a VB Script is:

CScript Error: Can't find script engine "VBScript" for script "C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\CEN00003\RenameComputer.vbs".

As a trial I converted one of the VB Scripts into a VB.NET console EXE and I piped out the error message(s) to see if I could trap more information, after calling CreateObject(“Wscript.Network”) or CreateObject(“Wscript.Shell”) or even CreateObject("NameTranslate") – I  get a fairly generic error:

Error occured: Cannot create ActiveX component.

Here’s what I have tried so far:
• Re-register vbscript.dll
• Re-set the following Registry Key “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\COM3\REGDBVersion” (suggestion from Google)
• Rebooting after State Restore
• Calling the VB Scripts with Wscript or Cscript
• Checked file associations – have read something like AV could be resetting these so it can scan the scrips prior to execution, however VBS is still associated as standard
• Reordered Task Sequence so Applications install last in-case it was something to do with SAV (before I discovered the problem only happens if State Restore runs)
• Reverted back to the original MigUser.xml and MigApp.xml’s (in-case something within my customised USMT XML’s were nuking something)
• Removed the option to “Run this step as the following account”

Outside of the Task Sequence, the scripts work perfectly fine.

Also, when sequenced in a dedicated test Task Sequence, the scripts work perfectly fine.

I’m stumped.

Any suggestions?

Ben

Tried what? You description says that if State Restore runs first, then you have issues. Based upon that, it would make sense that putting the scripts before the restore state would change the behavior. If not, then your base statement is inaccurate. Can you post your Task Sequence, your smsts.log, and your relevant scripts?
Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

Hi Jason.

What I did was added a reboot after the State Restore, but before the next task item which is a Computer Rename script. I can't/don't want to rename the computer until after State Restore has completed as otherwise the Computer Association will be broken.

I will need to obtain approval to post the Task Sequence XML before I post it.

Stand by...

Coputer Associations aren't based on names, they are based on the MAC address and/or SMSBIOS GUID. System name's are not unique identifiers in ConfigMgr and thus don't make sense to use for Computer Associations.

I'm assuming that you are refreshing these systems, but why the name change? Are you moving to a new naming standard?

What command-line are you using to invoke the script?

Is it just one script or multiple?

The Amazon Doctrine that Microsoft should embrace

In presenting the latest Amazon Kindle Fire HDs, Bezos stated the Amazon Doctrine

"Above else, align with customers

Win, when they win

Win, only when they win"

Microsoft, with Win8, has decidedly deviated from this doctrine.  The current customer base is now utilized only a a springboard to capture the "consumer" market.  Windows users are left to deal with a hobbled desktop OS that tries hard to transform into a portable OS; even Win8 fanboys post work-arounds of how they manage to stay much longer in the desktop.  A sorry state of affairs.  Microsoft actually plans to win by working against the desires and the needs of its users!!! The company is as far from the Amazon doctrine as it can possible go.

Intel is reporting that users are not buying computers not because they are waiting for Windows 8, but because they are now unsure as to what they want to buy.  Microsoft has managed to hopelessly confuse its users in every way possible.  In the process, its partners (who are under attack by Microsoft) stand to lose, not only Microsoft.  Users are even uncertain what specific need Win8 addresses. Does anybody know???  (this is a serious question).  Should users buy an OS solely to boost Microsoft's prospects???  How does Win8 facilitates the work of current users???  It seems to me (and many others) that this is an OS, that has no other purpose but to create a new market for Microsoft.

disk thrashing while idle

while idling, w7 will start thrashing my disk for 15-20 mins at a time.  it's not the auto defragmenter (I disabled it in task scheduler).  it's not the indexer (I disabled that in services).  I disabled superfetch too and it still does it.  I looked in perf monitor and it's usually svchost.exe or rundll32.exe and it seems to be reading random files on my drives, even files I haven't accessed in a while.  it's not making a restore check point b/c it's reading from drives not monitored by system restore. anyone else seeing this?

p.s.: i have plenty of free memory, so it's not page swapping.

i'm sure it's trying to improve my windows experience.  but it's about as pleasant as sleeping next to someone who grinds their teeth.  my windows experience will degrade considerably when my drive fails prematurely and I have to install a new drive and try to restore my data.

Disk 'thrashing'?

Using it, maybe.

W7 loads things into ram for faster access when you want to use it. And doing so will not make your hard drive fail sooner.
What will make it fail sooner is turning it off and on every day, or using a sleep mode. It is the cool down and heat up cycles that are hardest on electronics.
In fact, most failures (especially hard drives) happen when you first turn on a cold machine.

I have noticed it on my machine as well, but not for 15-20 minutes. Perhaps 4-5 minutes. Maybe it's because I have less ram, at only 3GB, than you do.

"and it seems to be reading random files on my drives, even files I haven't accessed in a while"
Query: How can you tell which files are being accessed?

------------------------------------
Reply:
if you open task manager and click resource monitor in performance task, you can see which apps are using your disk and which files they're accessing.  plus CPU and ethernet usage.

I don't turn my drive or PC on or off, but I'm not convinced disk activity has no correlation with disk failure.  anyway, I have a seagate (no, not the new one with all the troubles) and it's rather loud so it's annoying.  Plus it does this even while I'm playing HD movie, when I want to preserve as much CPU and disk bandwidth as possible.

I'll disable superfetch again and see what kind of impact it has.

barth2k, i´m suffering from the very same issues. Every time I leave computer in idle state my disk starts beeing freneticaly used. rundll32 is acessing absolutely random files (some time image files, some time dll´s, some time musics, some time exe programs). At first I tought about it being some kind of malware,  like "Hey, the monitor is turned off, now he is not seeing us acessing EVERY damn file!") but no, it´s not malware, im sure of it. I´m very concerned about security, and never had a bad/non up to date anti virus or firewall.

And, just to clarify, it still happens if I do:
1) Remove drive partitions (aka wipe out the entire drive)
2) Unplug network cable
3) Install a brand new copy of the oficial build 7000, that I got directly from MS website.

So, no way ANY malware can be acting in my system right now. And, the disk access while idle keeps going on.

Windows 7 performs scheduled defragmentation every week. In Control Panel type "defrag" in search box, open "Defragment your hard drive" under "Administrative tools". You can see that hard drives don't need defragmetation. This can be one of the reasons for disk trashing.

Another reason can be new search functionality. Windows 7 is indexing folders for faster search.

Sorry for my bad english.

Reply:
I am having simliar issues, I have disabled about every automatic scheduled type thing I can think of.
(Superfetch, Updates, Indexer, Defrag, my AV, etc)

My computer however, *never* stops using the HD.

Also, this happens on the other three computers I have Win7 install on aswell.
(Pc1: my desktop every day use machine)
(Pc2: my "community pc" - the one anyone over visiting is allowed to use for whatever they want)
(Pc3: my "server", for multimedia and other LAN shared folders, and various server application testing / Dualboots with a distro of linux)
(Pc4: my "control" pc, unplugged from the network and has no other software installed. (win7 only))

Each pc is relatively modern, the lowest of which is the server running a 1.2ghz CPU with 2GB of RAM

After any computer has been idling for about 10 minutes, the HD activity starts.  I at first thought this was the result of some sort of infection, as I noticed it first on my desktop PC, which I sleep next to.  However, after witnessing it on the "control" pc, I am near certain it is not.

The Hard Disk activity is usually nominal, and barely noticable (unless its 4am, and I am settling into bed).  However, it frequently "peaks" for upto a minute at a time, making all sorts of scary grinding noises.  Like large files being shuffled around.

This has aroused a lot of curiosity in me, enough so that I downloaded Process Explorer and Process Monitor to try and figure out what is going on.

Process Explorer seems to show "svchost" as the culprit.
Process Monitor shows a lot of various activity in the Windows registry, and various files and folders.  (I do not fully understand how or what ProcMon is showing, but if I had to guess it looks like files are being touched? updated, checked... something like that?)

If there is logfiles or some other output I can provide to assist with this, I will gladly do so.  I can also provide screenshots if need be.

I am not sure there is a "problem" here, I just notice the activity is happening, and I consider it odd, as compared to Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

Reply:
It could be  windows search indexing your files. Resource monitor would be the best option to find it out.

Find that svchost process in Task Manager, right click, and choose "Go to Service." That should give you more info on what's causing the activity.

It is just doing whatever kind of housekeeping it thinks needs to be done.   It is courteous enough to wait until the machine is otherwise idle.

Don't worry about it.   It is designed this way.    If you want a brain dead OS that does nothing for you then keep running XP.

Thank's djsb, I discovered the culprit using the information you provided to me, - seems Superfetch was still running.

- I think I will let it continue to run, for now, and gauge it on one of the other pc's disabled.  I want to learn what sort of performance differences I will experience before disabling it.

Naddy69, I am more than pleased with Win7, and I promise I will not be reverting back to XP or Vista =)

** Also, a quick mention about Superfetch, I disabled it briefly to check for any immediate changes.  The Hard Disk activity did not start up as usual, and the process of svchost that was running Superfetch dropped roughly 60mb of RAM use.  (Definately not a big deal, having 4gb avail).  - All in all, I honeslty see no real downside to this anymore (aside from the sound) - which I either will learn to live with, or find another way to deal with.  The performance gains may outweigh the annoyance.  Overall, I was merely curious to find out what was happening, and if I should be worried.

Seriously WTF? I moved my OS to an SSD and my HDD has only music data. So there are no OS files on it. I have disabled scheduled defrag, disabled System Restore and this stupid OS wants to thrash around my HDD again. I mean the whole point of going SSD was to have a quiet machine. Why don't these clowns tell us what in world is thrashing my HDD around? A data drive no less. I don't want any stinkin "optimization" on that drive. Just leave the f'ing drive alone until I read data from it. Is that too much to ask for? Apparently it is when you are dealing with incompetents who to this day cannot get gigabit ethernet to run properly when a "media" file is being played. Just watch your network speed. Don't even get me started on Jumbo Frames and Windows. Somebody please make a KISS OS without all the bloat and ____ and obfuscation of this latest abomination from Redmond. It really is a sad state of affairs for computing in general when you have to depend on these incompetents to have the most interoperable OS in the world. There is an OS you can use that fits you perfectly.  It's called Linux.  There is no bloat ware on it at all if you get the right distro.  You also wouldn't have to worry about viruses.  Plus Linux used the EXT4 journaling system.  quite quick and usually more efficient than NTFS. It is even FREE! The main problem with it is that it is a big learning curve.

It could also be windows defender or system restore running when idle.  The task scheduler does a ton of stuff in vista/win7.  I recommend enabling task history in task scheduler.

Indeed... with every version since 2000, MS has implemented 'services' which cause unnecessary disk thrashing.

Once again, in Windows 7, they've decided what's 'best' for everyone ... why can't MS get it right?

During setup, we should have the option of automated or manual 'maintenance' options: Home user with little or no knowledge? Select automatic 'house cleaning'... techie, power-user, or IT staff?  select manual house cleaning.

In other words, let ME decide what to run and schedule.  As it stands, MS enables a lot of pointless 'services'.

Frankly, after installation I was dumbfounded at how many useless services were 'enabled' in Windows 7.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Actually, if you look at Windows 7 and the 'Aero' interface... it is taken verbatim from Gnome and Compiz-fusion. The first time I started up Windows 7, I started looking for a way to enable 'wobbly windows'...  8-) Forgot I was using Windows (until disk thrashing started). It's rather obvious that someone at MS took liberties with the interface from Gnome.

Has MS admitted co-opting the Gnome/Compiz 'look and feel ' and the open source license ?

FWIW, still trying to track down the source of periodic disk-churning that occurs in Win7.

Superfetch service? nope

MP3 share service? nope

Defrag scheduler? nope

From what I see in Process Monitor.......

Its various files....

When the thrashing stops then the number of entries drops by about 20 items

Most times pagefile.sys and windows.log(?) is at the top doing most reads/writes....

Please can someone RESPONSIBLE at Microsoft come forward and officially explain to us consumers whats going on and ow we can reduce this?

I have a fast PC and from the sound of the thrashing....

I could process data for NASA theres that much thrashing!

Sxr71, I really want to frame your comment.  It's a perfectly worded expression of my exact feelings towards the last few Microsloppy OS'.   I might add that my Win7 64 installation became unstable after 6 months of operation (okay, maybe it was some third party junk that caused the issue), but when I essentially lost the boot capability of the drive, which, by the way, should be a heck of a lot easier to diagnose and fix than it is, for some freakin' reason, Microsoft had the gall to insist that my perfectly legal copy of Win7 64 was an "upgrade" version and didn't want to authenticate properly.    Yes I fixed the issue, but honestly, it made me regret having paid for it as a legitimate user.   If "legitimates" are made to feel like scum, why bother to pay for the experience.

Anyway, that's my two cents... and quite outside of the HDD Thrashing thread... sorry about that.

tooltips, css popups don't display correctly in IE

This question refers to website/page

www.tremyfoel.co.uk/beaches.htm

I am using a simple javascript function to load the beach info from a hidden iframe into a div. I am also using simple css tooltip and a simple css popup script all of this works fine in Firefox, chrome, Opera, Safari but in IE8:

- page is not centered

- tooltips don't work

- popup (PopUp2, onclick on the dog icon) is opened on load and is not positioned correctly - inline instead of top right (PopUp, triggered by onclick on the blue flag, works fine)

The javascript is dw_loader.js    (more info   http://www.dyn-web.com/tutorials/iframes/hidden.php)

css tooltip: http://www.impressivewebs.com/pure-css-tool-tips/

css popup: http://codesnippets.joyent.com/posts/show/708

My suspicion is that this is browser rendering, else it would show in the other browsers

All advice appreciated.

your using UAS sniffing.... contact your shim providers for updates.... avoid UAS sniffing scripts.

post questions about html, css and scripting to the IE Web Developer forum with a link to your website.

I agree with your observation to avoid using UAS....

I think I understand...

The data-tooltip attribute being used by the css tooltip is a html5 facility, presumably IE8 & IE9 don't like it well I can fix that by using a more basic tooltip function - I dont have a shim provider.

But that doesnt explain the pop up problem or the page not centering.

It may help to look at the minidump files from the crashes with a debugger.

Can you zip up the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and make available (provide link) via Windows Live SkyDrive or similar site?

The following link has information on using Windows Live SkyDrive:

If you have problems zipping the minidump files copy the minidump files to another location such as a folder on the Desktop

Also, you do not necessarily have to zip up the minidump files, you can upload them one at a time.

Based on the bug check code, the issue seems to be caused by a certain driver. Please update all your drivers including the Chipset driver to the latest and see how it works.

More information: Bug Check 0xD1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If issue persists, it is recommended to upload the mini dump files to SkyDrive for further research.

Hope this helps.
