Office 2013 - Product Key from Microsoft not valid

Hi

After having downloaded the img file from Microsoft, I am trying several time to complete my installation of office 2013 by entering the key product that i have receivied from the microsoft download page.

The installation Window says me that my key is not valid... How so? It is the one of Microsoft...

My operating system is the Windows 8 Customer preview...

Any help will be more than welcome... thanks in advance :)

You will have to contact Microsoft support.  Since they gave you the key, and possibly an incorrect key, they can point you in the direction/give you a new valid key to use.

First of all, thanks for your reply...

I am trying that as well... and, you might see it funny, but even for something as simple as that I have the hardest time ever to get simply in touch with them : I mean it seems that we are left with only a phone number related to our nearest country in a list and I can t call them...

I will try harder to get an email or some other means than a phone call, if that mean exists :)

And, if any of you have an other idea... Just say it please... Thanks :)

My problem remains the same after a whole day spent on trying to solve it, with and without help... Any thoughts, suggestions? they would be more than welcome ! :)

Could it be that your applying a key for Office 2013 pro and yet your installing Office 2013 Home and Business.  Basically wrong version is installed per what the key is supposed to license up?  That could be a possibility.

Thanks for your second reply, Chris

Ah no, it is a pro with 2 "trial" licences. The .img & my 2 licences came all together from the microsoft website... And, when I start the install .exe, the content of the installation window states it is an office pro...

As a "last chance", I will download the .img a second time... that will be mot probably my last attempt

Win 7 start search stopped working but explorer search still works

My start search only shows no items match your search.

I've tried the following common solutions google has yielded so far:

  • Start_SearchFiles & Start_SearchPrograms reg keys set (were already) to 2, 1 respectively
  • rebuild index & restart
  • disable win search, restart, enable win search, restart

I believe my problem is a bit unique though in that the normal search functionality works just fine in the top right corner of all the explorer windows; just my start search is not working anymore.

For over a year now I have not been using the windows libraries feature.  I actually disabled it entirely via the registry tweaks found here: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-libraries-feature-in-windows-7/

There was a slight bug with this tweak that was starting to bother me though.  Any time I tried to move or create and rename new folders, I would be prompted to try again (only once each time).  This is now bothering me enough that I decided to cave and re-enable the libraries feature using the "Restore Default Settings.reg" file also included in the download from the above website.  My grievances with the creating and moving folders is now gone, but as far as I can tell, the libraries are still gone too.  All this was great at first until the next time I tried to use the start search.

Going off of my suspicion that the library tweaks messed this up, I tried to make a new library to see if this would fix my search problem.  However, when I select a folder in explorer and go to "Include in library", a list drops down with "Computing libraries..." (spinney wheel to the left of it, red close X to the right) and "create new library".  If I click "create new library", nothing happens.  I can click the red X next to "Computing libraries" but it comes right back the next time I click "Include in library".  I get similar results if I just right click on a folder and point at "include in library" in the dropdown.  The only option listed is a greyed out "Retrieving libraries".

I'm guessing I've still got a problem in my registry but have no clue where.  Any help would be awesome.  Thanks.

Update: Just to see if these key changes were really part of the problem I re-ran the "Disable Libraries in Windows 7" registry file and now start search is working again...  So I'm guessing the "restore default settings" registry fix is definitely the problem.

Windows 7 automatic update notifier

Could somebody at MS take a look at the work flow with the "updates available" in Win 7 please.  Currently, we (the people who use this product) get an "updates available" notifier.  That is good.

Click on it, and another notice says: "important updates are available."

WHY?

Why cant this click take us right to the list of the important updates?  Many of us dont want every update that comes along, so we have to click again and again to select or deselect the correct ones.  And then there are multiple clicks if some of the important updates are deemed optional or hardware related.

How about a page that shows the important updates, the optional updates, and the hardware updates.  That way, we can scroll through them very quickly.

Win XP was much cleaner.  Why was this broken for Win 7?

Reply:

Hi,

If you'd like Windows to install important updates as they become available, turn on automatic updating.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-Windows-updates

You can also set Windows 7 to automatically install important and recommended updates or to install important updates only.

While I certainly appreciate the attempt to assist me, the prior post does not address the situation.  I DO NOT want to blindlhy install every update.  So I will not turnon the automatic install.

What I did ask was why MS requires several mouse clicks in the notification - installation process.

Currently I have no updates pending.  But as stated above, when update(s) are pending, I get a notifier.

I click on the notifier, which goes to a page that says "important updates are available."

Why cant that page just show them to me and let me select the ones that I want/dont want?  Instead, I have to do more clicks to see them.  This is a waste of time.

Cluster Shared Volume disks report Online (No Access)

Hi, bit of a strange one here...

We're currently testing out a Hyper-V Failover Cluster on Windows Server 2012 RC. We are using shared storage (HP P4300 cluster) which is working just fine and giving no errors either as standalone disks or as witness disks on the cluster. We have the HP P4000 DSM installed and working, again with no errors.

The problem is that when we add an available volume (reported as online available storage) to the cluster shared volumes, they come up, briefly report as Online, and then revert to a state of Online (No Access). They do not appear in C:\ClusterStorage on either of the cluster member nodes. There are no errors (or warnings, or even informational events) in the cluster event log or windows event logs, and I can find no way of resolving the issue.

To further confuse matters, if I put the disk into Maintenance Mode, it changes to Online (In Maintenance), successfully mounts itself on its owner node, and allows me to add files etc.

I can find no reference to the state Online (No Access) aqnywher in teh Googleverse, so if anyone knows what's going on, I;d be very grateful of pointers!

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Is storage validation passing for the lun?

If so, can you collect the cluster log as follows and see if it gives you a better idea of what is going on:

1.            Set the cluster logging level to verbose by setting the cluster property ClusterLogLevel to 5 :
                In a PowerShell console: (get-cluster).ClusterLogLevel = 5
2.            Set the cluster log size to max by setting the cluster property ClusterLogSize to 1024
                In a PowerShell console: (get-cluster).ClusterLogSize = 1024
3.            Add the disk to CSV
4.            From a PS window, run "get-clusterlog –timespan X" to generate cluster logs for the last X minutes
5.            Cluster log will be generated on every node as %windpws%\cluster\reports\cluster.log

------------------------------------
Reply:

Had the same problem.

What I found is the reason for the problem in my case was the fact that I made my Nodes AD controllers.

After removing AD role from clustered nodes by creating a VM on each node locally and making them AD then demoting my clustered nodes, I was able to create CSV disk without any problem.

Superfetch does a lot in Windows 7.  It seems to reserve all available ram for caching applications, but releases ram when it's needed.  As admin you can delete everything under c:\windows\prefetch and reboot.  But then you'll have to idle until the layout.ini (Readyboot uses it) file is recreated, and then boot/login 5x to retrain Readyboot, or just let it happen over the course of time.

This command makes the layout.ini file too and does a boot semi-defrag of every file inside it:

start /wait rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

I only put the start /wait in to see when it's done (20 min?).

------------------------------------
Reply:

For those who want to turn off or on SUperfetch this can by done by the following steps:

To run this command simpy open windows start menu and in the searchfield type: services.msc

In this list look for superfetch, and double click on it here you can choose to enable or disable it (more options available but it suggest to just choose for enable).

Good luck all :)

Which is better mode in reading books you prefer

everyday we see a hundred of new books in information systems and information technology and we must develop ourself with the new age. But the real problem most of us can't effort the costs of buying new books every month or every week so what is the best solution for this problem for IT guys :
- paper books (but high cost)
- ebooks ( and reading from Lap Top , PC)
- Reading from Ipad
- Kindle

Reply:

I am going to disagree with that. A bigger problem is that we don't have enough time to read all the books we would like to read, even if we could afford to buy them all. In fact, there is so much free information around the Internet, such as articles, blogs, whitepapers, manuals and even free ebooks, that gathering a lot of information is quite easy. The hardest part is finding the time to read it.

I find it easier to read books on paper, but they are too large and heavy to carry them around all day. Instead, I use ebooks or other documents that I save to a small tablet or other protable device, and I read them during idle time, such as when I am travelling in public transport.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Did you mean you prefer reading books through tablet and the tablet represent the ideal solution for you.

------------------------------------
Reply:

No, I do not consider the tablet an ideal solution for reading. I prefer to read on paper.

The reason I find myself reading on the tablet is "portability". The books are too large and heavy to carry with me all the time, and this is why I find myself reading on the tablet. But whenever I am at a location where I have books available, I prefer to read from the books.

upgrade my primary domain controller 2003 std edition to 2008 std edition

i plan to upgarde primary domain controller from 2003 to  2008 with out losing any data or roles how i can do this "detailed steps pls"

Reply:

Your upgrade path will depend on whether you are doing an in-place upgrade or standing up a parallel Domain Controller. Basically you want to make sure you meet all the system requirements, and perform a backup of the boot and system partitions and the system state. In order to prepare your domain for 2008 log on to the schema master and run adprep on the forest and if you intent to use a Read Only Domain Controller then run the ADprep /rodcprep command. Log on to the infrastructure master and run adprep on the domain and group policy prep. Then you can finally upgrade your primary domain controller to 2008 or promote a 2008 member server as a new DC. There are supported upgrade paths, and you should be able to go from 2003 to 2008 without losing any data but it's always a good idea to take a back up and test it before performing the upgrade. The upgrade should be transparent to your exchange and OCS users if you have addition DC available to serve their request during the upgrade.

I've included some links I think you should read. They contain the step by step instructions you need and other information to consider before carrying out your upgrade.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Sorry I'm having a little trouble understanding your question. It sounds like you have already prepared your forest and domain for a 2008 domain controller. I don't see you having a problem moving all 5 roles to the new domain controller once you have promoted it as Domain Controller and added the DNS service. From your earlier post you said are currently running all 5 roles on one server without any reported load issues. The best practise is to have more than one domain controller and split the roles up to spread the load and for redundancy.

Just be cautious if you have more than one domain in your forest because you cannot have the Domain Controller with the Infrastructure Master Role to also be a Global Catalog Server; this will cause problems with replicating group membership changes in your AD Domain. If you only have one domain then I would recommend having both domain controllers be Global Catalog Servers.

Also if you plan to do a clean install of server 2008 on the old Domain Controller or to completely remove it from the domain first make sure you have moved over all the roles off it and have another Global Catalog in the domain and then demote it using dcpromo. Then you can install a clean copy of server 2008 and promote to back as a DC.

I woudl start by running Netmon on the client and the target server and see how the traffic behaves, e.g. what is sent from the client and what does the target server receive. Furthermore, I would examine the firewall rules on both the client and target server.

This is not officially supported by Microsoft I believe.

It really depends on what you want to achieve. If you just want to use the SCOM webconsole you can use any device that supports silverlight and a webbrowser.

If you really want an integrated solution you definately have to check the solution of derdack.

Ok, here's the answer... after a couple of E-mails & a long phone conversation w/ my cousin who works in Redmond, for MS, who was, actually on the Windows7 Build Team & is, obviously close, in his position, to what's what w/ Windows8.  Furthermore, before we talked, on my behalf, he took the query to his colleagues responsible for Win8 Deployment & Start-up.  That said, NO, cannot use Upgrade to do a clean install on a blank HDD or SSD, for that matter.

However, you can take a blank drive, throw say, XP, Vista, Win7 or even Win8 RP on it and then install the Upgrade telling it to keep nothing which, will format the drive as part of the install process... this would be the recommended approach as it, in effect, amounts to a clean install.  Keep in mind, if using the RP, you better already have the RP because once Win8 goes RTM the RP will no longer be available for DL.

The (old) "double pass trick" used w/ Win7 Upgrade discs will not be doable w/ Win8 Upgrade discs or .ISOs.  W/ 8 a Key must be entered for the install to proceed & the delayed Activation question/option does not exist @ the beginning of the Win8 install, either.  As well, remember you don't buy the software, you buy a license.  All the SKUs are on an install disc (or ISO) but, it's the Key, the License that determines what you get.  Ergo, if, you tell, assuming there the choice/option, it to do a "custom" install but, have bought an Upgrade License (Key), you will get told the Key does not match what you are trying to do.  Plus, if, it doesn't 'see' anything, an OS, already on the drive, the Upgrade (install) will not proceed.

So, bottom line... if, to save money, an Upgrade Win8 is used to a virgin drive that drive cannot be blank.  But, you can throw a legit OS on it, even Win8 RP and then turn around & tell it, the Win8 Install, not to keep anything, thereby formatting that drive & in effect clean installing Win8 using Upgrade.

We will always encourage & recommend clean over a true Upgrade, keeping stuff from the prior OS & w/out formatting.  Although, the upgrading w/ Win8 is WAY more sophisticated & more likely to give or end up w/ better results than w/ previous Windows OS Upgrade paths.  For example, just being able to do upgrades from all of XP, Vista & 7 w/out losing everything; before, w7, you couldn't do upgrades from XP, @ all.

Anyway, I really hope this gives closure & clarifies the issue.  The only other route for clean installs on blank drives is Full Win8 or Win8 System Builder Product.  I do not have a price on that, yet.

Really?

I've assumed that Microsoft included this by design in Vista and 7 because of the following scenario:

A customer buys a PC (desktop, notebook, tablet) with Vista pre-installed. Like many people, he (indeterminate gender) has only an OS restore partition on the hard disk, and he has no restore disks (or doesn't bother making them, if that's what the PC maker allows). He later buys a retail Windows 7 upgrade. He installs it as a custom (clean) install, perhaps formatting the hard disk in the process. (A Win 7 upgrade license permits that; apparently it remembers that a qualifying OS was installed.) The PC runs well with Windows 7 for a few years.

The hard disk fails. The customer is in a hurry to get the PC running again, even though his data may be gone. He buys a replacement hard disk from a local shop, and replaces the dead drive.

At this point, the customer must come up with some way to get a qualifying OS on the drive before using the Windows 7 upgrade license. He calls Microsoft Support. What do they tell him?

Here I speculate: double install, without activating the first installation.

The customer loses an extra half hour (plus or minus) of his life, but gets the PC working again without additional time or money.

Maybe Microsoft will not offer an equivalent work-around in Windows 8.  I hope that they will be more forthcoming than they were with 7, though. I'm encouraged that they say that the upgrade may be installed over the RP. It was possible to install the RTM Windows 7 upgrade over the Win 7 RC without any hacking, even though the official line was that it could not be done.

Thank you for sharing this link with us!  It is exactly what we wanted to know.

  • See the pink highlighted circled word  could .   It explains that if we get an activation error, it could be because (or remedied by) the listed reasons beneath.  That section which you quoted, it could be that.
  • It could also be for another reason.  It could be that we intend to delay activation for up to 30 days, on a computer that has a blank unformatted disk.  Could be that.
  • See the paragraph at the bottom.  We are permitted to delay activation for up to 30 days.  Permitted.
  • Nowhere in that article does it say that re-running the upgrade installer is prohibited.  Nowhere does it say prohibited.
  • So we do re-run the installer.  It is not prohibited to do that.  And the upgrade actives perfectly.  Activates perfectly.
  • Now review the title.  The title is about an activation error.  Error.  But there is no error.  The upgrade at this point is perfectly activated.  The article (and the section you quoted) no longer pertains to our installation.

So there it is, Carey.  You have just provided documentation justifying the "double-install" method onto a blank unformatted disk.

Thank you so very very much.  Brilliant!

You are referencing Windows7.  Does not apply to 8

Proceeding w/out a Key & delaying Activation, not w/ Win8.

7 & 8 install screens and procedures are not the same.

Dbl Pass will not work w/ 8

Reread the material or more carefully.

And stay on topic; we are discussing Win8, here, not, Win7.

This snippet of the W7 EULA was posted in this thread:      Windows 7 upgrade transfer to a brand new computer?

Click it to view the conversation.  Except for that out-of-context quote that Carey Frisch posted there (again) (and marked Answer), you can see the solution to transferring the upgrade software to a new unformatted computer is the double-install method.  In fact, bobkn supplied a link there to step-by-step instructions.

I guess Carey Frisch was protesting that, just like here, although I can't figure out why.  Can you?  A full examination of Carey's link here has shown it's a perfectly justified procedure.

Anyway Drew.  Have you any thoughts about how Windows 8 will address the issue of transferring the upgrade software to a blank new computer?  You have suggested that the double-install method will no longer work.

To remove any doubt that it's legal, look at 17b.   "....but only if the license terms of the software you upgraded from allows you to do so."

No such phrase exists in 17a.  It's unconditional.  "You may transfer..."  There are no strings attached to transferring a retail-box upgrade.

'mb',

All I have been able to find out or determine is:

1 The Win8 Upgrade won't proceed w/out a Key
2. The Activate later/manually opt-out doesn't exist.
3. The Win8 Upgrade wants to 'see' an OS (already) on the drive.

Maybe, it will be discovered that cheating w/ Win8 Upgrades is possible/doable but, currently, doesn't sound like it.

Cheat?

Well, the various reasons discussed for it here are legitimate and legal.  And the EULA authorizes it.  (and Carey's link doesn't prohibit it).

But I certainly see where it could be abused to install a discounted upgrade when the full license is appropriate.  That is cheating.

I have my doubts about your suggestion that it's ok to apply the upgrade to W8-RP.

I also have doubts about your suggestion to borrow Windows media disks (which are embossed with "Do not lend or make illegal copies").

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the Windows 8 EULA says.

I, really, don't think I said "borrow".  I was taken aback the 1st time I saw something written that seemed to be based I my saying borrow.  I think someone else, in the thread, before you, had that askew, also.  The references were to putting one's own valid copy of anything from XP through to RP.

& somewhere I thought it was stated that being able to go RP to Win8 Upgrade is based on 2 things; there was/is a Key/an OS prior to the RP and that it is not going on a blank drive.

It comes down to, Upgrades (the version, not the process) and their license, are supposed to be for existing machines & Operating Systems... NOT new machines.

OEMs and FULL versions and their license, are supposed to be used for building new installations.

Well, I somewhat disagree with your remark "...NOT new machines".

In the case of the Transfer, as permitted in the existing EULA, there's no restriction on the destination computer.  It can be new, unformatted.

And if you really study the wording closely, there's actually no requirement that the original Qualifying Software (that's being upgraded) need ever have been installed on any machine.  It's just the license being upgraded.  So, provided we obey the other terms, there's really no reason we can't install the Upgrade onto a brand new machine.  (We just can't cheat and reuse the old software anymore on it).

Mainly though, I'm in agreement with the spirit of what you're trying to express.

Regarding applying the upgrade to W8-RP.  Again, I think we'll need to wait and see if MS publishes permission for that.  Like they did with W7 here:

The cversion.ini method:   blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-experience.aspx

I do concede it is interesting, challenging to sort.

Interpreting ELUAs
Using Upgrades to save money but, maybe not as intended, by design.  Bit, like buying a $10 mouse w/ an OEM OS, to keep things legit; ie 'w/ new hardware'.
The commonlyknown & divulged and used, past precedent of putting 7 on blank drives via Upgrades
Paying for an Upgrade License, maybe, even @ a Promo price BUT, treating Upgrade as if, under a FULL License purchased, @ its higher cost.

Aside from this discussion, per se...

It is generally felt, in the long run, for a couple of meritorious reasons, Full version, clean installs are best, anyway... albeit, another conversation.

Pretty much the message I've been relaying.  Thanks for more pointing @ same concept.

Also, would apply in a dual-boot scenario where one wants to keep the 'other' OS... Upgrade (the) RP (drive) & the dual-boot is maintained, now being Win8 Pro & the (same) 'other OS'.

The Windows 8 Pro RTM eula appears to indicate that it is an upgrade.  It installs onto a blank drive with no underlying O/S.

In previous Windows versions, if you skip keying-in the Product Key, a generic Product Key would automatically default that provides 30 days grace.  These generic keys have not been kept secret, for example, here is a TechNet article that lists some XP generic installation keys.

Upon supplying a generic Product Key for Window 8 Pro RTM, it installs and runs fine.  However, checking slmgr.vbs /xpr and /dlv shows it is in Notification Mode.

The image above was condensed to show the pertinent info.  Click here to download the actual eula.

When they become available, you can download the various Windows 8 licenses from the official MS facility here.

A little off-topic, the OEM version continues to provide downgrade rights indefinitely.  However, only to Windows 7 and Vista, not XP.  As in previous eulas, it does not specify where to obtain that earlier media, stating merely (quote) Neither the manufacturer or installer, nor Microsoft, is obligated to supply earlier versions to you. You must obtain the earlier version separately.   Click here to download the OEM eula.

OK. That sounds Good, but what happens if you disconnect from the internet during the install & after you have entered in the activation key?

Would it still install all the way to the finish?

If yes,, then you could still do the double pass trick.

Will Microsoft give you a refund?

Because this Win 8 OS is not designed for a desktop system. M/Soft thinks that the desktop PC is dead!

Microsoft seems to have kept this fact a secret & they never bothered to advertise it or tell me this before my purchase.

Either way, I'm willing to write off my purchase price and I'm already back to windows 7 (after only 24 hrs with win 8)

No, it's not about change as some will no doubt argue, its about speed & functionality for me & windows 8 as a desktop system is way slower to navigate than win 7.

Now there are so many more mouse clicks just to do what was once a simple click & go operation. Yes, this OS as a desktop system is absolutely terrible

I bet the guys behind the Google OS are laughing right now!

I cannot think of one business that would want to use windows 8 as their main OS.

Microsoft in 2012 reminds me of the Titanic.

Well, I can't bite my tongue, here.  Nor am I unique, from it, in what I'm about to say...  I, like so many others, have been using Windows 8 non-stop since 29/2/2012.  Technically, it is superior to Windows 7, as well as Vista & XP.
I have a conventional, non-Touch PC and, here's the big point... it works beautifully on such a device!!
"Win 8 OS is not designed for a desktop system. M/Soft thinks that the desktop PC is dead!" <--- this is false... one of the major, achieved design goals was that it be a system for ALL devices.  MS needed to produce a consistent system for mobile devices AS WELL as traditional PCs & laptops and this has been accomplished.  "Microsoft seems to have kept this fact a secret ", there is/was no such secret.  Nobody thinks PCs are dead, they have & will have place on our computing landscape & will for a long time.  The greater role that mobile devices play or that need be given attention as use & needs evolve is increasing... along side of desktop use.
It is actually, faster & easier to navigate than 7 & requires fewer clicks or maneuvers to find , get @ things.
Also, many of the achieved design goals were/are w/ an eye to Enterprise concerns, interests & needs. There are, indeed, many things, both technically & features, that make & are making it very exciting & attractive to business environments.

To discover, learn, understand & appreciate Windows 8 might take more than 24 hrs.  Maybe, even, being open to some tips, suggestions & guidance would be good, fitting & helpful, as opposed to, rashly, kicking it to the curb.

I am quite content to recommend Windows 8 to my clients.
