My notes
After Exporting from Exchange 2003 to 2010 I thought I would share my experiences with the community.
My setup
- Exported from Exchange 2003 with Exmerge
- Mailboxes larger than 2 GB exported with Outlook 2010
- Imported to a new AD/Exchange 2010 setup with 1 CAS/HUB and 1 Mailbox server
Problems encountered in no particular order:
- I used a Windows 2008 TS to open Outlook 2010 against Exchange 2010 to logon to other user mailboxes (making a separate profile like I used to with Outlook 2003/Exchange 2003). Unfortunately I never managed to get rid of the Outlook logon box when trying to give myself user rights to all mailboxes. I tried everything both via shell and console (send-as, receive-as, full access etc.) but the logon box kept popping up no matter what I did. EDIT: It looks like the box is gone on NEW mailboxes, but not mailboxes made before I set the access rights.
- When giving myself Full Access to the mailbox store with EMS I got the correct rights on all mailboxes (I verified this with “Managing Full Access Permission” in EMC). But the mailboxes never showed up as extra mailboxes in my admin user mailbox (as per MS they should do this automatically through autodiscover). I had to delete the admin user from the “Manage Full Access Permission” dialog box in EMC and add it again and it would show up in my Outlook.
- When deleting the FullAccess Permission after I had processed a mailbox the mailbox did not disappear from my Outlook. Instead it was still there but I could not access it, and it is still there even though I have tried to access the mailbox through a newly installed server with a new profile. It throws me an error message that I can`t open it and can`t delete it because it is connected to a profile (similar the error message you get when you try to delete an additional mailbox)
- So far I have only seen one small problem with the dreaded “Export from Outlook 2010/Import to Exchange 2010” problem where mail is missing in user folders, one user missing some items in Sent Items, but that could also be me missing that exact mailbox in one of my exports.
- After importing the exported mail half my mailboxes were in the wrong locale. This meant that I had to manually access the mailboxes and move the mail to the system folders with the wrong locale and then set correct locale through EMS. I have been working with Exchange since 5.0 and the locale problem has been around forever in some form and it really baffles me that this has not been fixed……it has even escalated now since most of my mailboxes with wrong locale actually had gotten the wrong locale because the users had got new e-mail while I was doing the import!! I just can`t understand why MS can`t make the systemfolders “static” so that it doesn`t matter what language the mailbox is in. An Inbox is an Inbox no matter what so that the import always will go to the correct systemfolder. Anyway, next time I obviously have to remember to log on to the mailbox as soon as I have created them before any backup/system/external e-mail manage to access them. Farcial.
- When doing the wrong-locale-manual-move-job I decided to delete the Calendar folder instead of moving it because that sped up the moving process (why is anything you do with the Calendar in Outlook 2010 so painfully slow?). I imagined I could only import the Calendars all over again afterwards. How wrong can you be J No matter what I did afterwards I could not get the Calendar to import. I checked the .PST files and the Calendar was there but it would not import. Finally I exported them all over again with Exmerge and then it would import just fine. When running the Get-MailboxImportRequestStatistics I noticed that I got an error message saying “Couldn`t find folder Calendar”. So I still don`t know whether the .PST file or the Import wizard that was at fault.
- I could never get the –IncludeFolders “#Inbox#” to work in the New-MailboxImportRequest cmdlet. No matter which system folder I chose (Inbox, Calendar etc.) it would say “Couldn`t find folder “#Inbox#” or “#Calendar#” etc. in the log.
- One caution to you all; I am using a third party tool to make automatic signatures in Outlook. These stopped working after I changed the locale on the mailboxes that had the wrong locale since the name of the Signature folder is also changed when you change the locale on a mailbox.
Also:
- When testing my Autodiscover on www.testexchangeconnectivity.com everything (and I mean absolute EVERYTHING) turns out with green OK signs, but still I can`t get my EXTERNAL Autodiscover to work. Outlook finds the server through autodiscover and my Outlook Anywhere clients connects but when I input username/password it hangs and fails. It could be that I early in this installation changed from Basic to NTLM authentication and then back again, but I still have not found a solution, although I suspect there is something wrong with the rights in my IIS. So if anyone could provide me with the exact IIS rights to use in an Exchange 2010 installation I would be grateful.
This is what I can remember of the process, I am sure there were some other issues as well that I have forgotten. I really, really, really, really, really, really miss Exmerge or a similar tool. With it Exchange administrators had full control over every aspect of the Import/Export of e-mail and there was never ANY doubt of what had gone right and what had gone wrong.
I can`t understand why the Exchange Team can`t make a proper tool for us to use, preferably a GUI, they have included all kinds of tools in the Exchange Toolbox, but the Import/Export is very poor and buggy and can`t be trusted at all. MS makes everything as user friendly as possible for the actual Outlook user, but providing the System Administrators with functionally tools is not on top of their Christmas list for sure.
Just my bit of rant after a hard weeks work……this was a 110 user installation, hopefully I will never have to do an import/export using Exchange Tools with a bigger customer in the future!

Hi
Thank you to share your experience. You suggestion will be reported to department of development.
You can change type to discussion.
Can you tell me the details about your outlook anywhere?
It doesn’t work for outlook 2003 or 2010 or both?
What is the version of your client os ?

Hi Terence
I will get back to this thread when or if we start to look into the autodiscover error. So far it hasn`t been a problem as my customer is used to manually set the Outlook Anywhere settings, and the internal Autodiscover works perfect. But if it becomes a problem in the future I will remember this thread. The autodiscover problem was originally discovered around Christmas 2010 (our project got a few months delayed after that) and I can`t remember what kind of clients we used but I think we had the same problem on 2003 and 2010, although i can`t be sure. Windows OS was Windows 7. I will check when I get around to it, I have just got an identical project on my desk so here we go again :-)

remote touch screen display for win 8 pro desktop
I already have a good 26" display monitor for my desktop. I could buy a touch screen to get the full metro experience, but I would rather have a small portable 10" touch screen to use as a main monitor while my 26" monitor runs in clone mode. I cannot find a wireless display to use as a remote input device for this task.
Has anyone seen such a device or do you know of a small tablet that can be hacked to do it?

"the drive where windows is installed is locked. unlock the drive and try again"
Do you know how to do it? i have a dell xps 14 ultrabook.
Thank you in advance.

Wish you could:
- Boot directly to Windows 8's Desktop rather than to the "Modern" Start Screen?
- Have a versatile Start button (customizable) on Windows 8's Taskbar?
- Have a convenient Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, Switch User, Log Off, etc. button?
- Have access to Apps, Control Panel, and Search Functions from the Desktop?

Winpe4 (Windows 8 based) custom shell
My goal is to customize a windows PE 4 boot image. It must do the following.
- Do not display the command prompt window
- load a custom hta shell
With winpe3 I managed to make it run without a command prompt and automatically load an hta file. I did this by assigning a custom shell in x:\windows\system32\winpeshl.ini that points to bddrun.exe
Contents of winpeshl.ini
[LaunchApps] %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\bddrun.exe,/bootstrap
Windows PE 4 created by using the new Assessment and Deployment kit no longer has bddrun.exe. I've tried using other options, but this is the simplest way to get it to run winpeinit.exe so I have all the resources I need without it running a command window. I ended up copying bddrun.exe from my winpe3 wim to the winpe4 wim and it works just fine. I suspect that the copy on a windows 7 computer would be the same.
I then have an Unattend.xml file on the root of the X drive which does several things. It runs bginfo.exe which is a free, third party tool which sets the background and displays other helpful info such as the IP address and Mac Address. Then it runs menu.hta which is the real "shell".
contents of Unattend.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend"> <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Setup" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"> <Display> <ColorDepth>16</ColorDepth> <HorizontalResolution>1024</HorizontalResolution> <RefreshRate>60</RefreshRate> <VerticalResolution>768</VerticalResolution> </Display> <RunSynchronous> <RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add"> <Description>Background</Description> <Order>1</Order> <Path>X:\BGInfo.exe /accepteula /timer:0 /iqX:\BackGroundSettings.bgi /silent</Path> </RunSynchronousCommand> <RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add"> <Description>PE Menu</Description> <Order>2</Order> <Path>mshta.exe x:\menu.hta</Path> </RunSynchronousCommand> </RunSynchronous> <EnableFirewall>false</EnableFirewall> </component> </settings> <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim://ccpxe/express/images/win7x64/district/originaldvd/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ENTERPRISE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" /> </unattend>
Hopefully this will help someone create a custom windows pe menu system and hide the command window. For more fun, I included the menu.hta below which is easily customizable to run the comands you want. Keep in mind that most of the options won't work unless you add a suitable ghost.exe and other utilites to your image in the path's the menu is expecting.

Taking backup of a Publisher DB
Hi , I have a requirement where We need to take a back up of the Publisher database which is a (production System) and restore it on someother server and use it for testing some deployment. As a part of the testing we need to drop and create the object( As the objects are published as articals in the actual DB, even the backup also has the same ), while droping the objects we are getting an error message as "objects cannot be droped because it is used by the replication setup"
Just to give back ground:
We have transaction replication Setup between Server1 and Server2.
Server 1 - Publisher
Server 2 - distributor and Subscriber.
My question is,
If i need to use the backup database for my testing purpose, what are the step do i need to follow. Can I directly drop the publisher by creating the Drop script by navigating as below.
Backup server=> Replication=> Local Publication=> <Publication name>=> Rihgt clik and Select generate Scripts => Select radio button 'Drop /Disable publisher . and run it against the backup database.
Thanks for you help.

I believe, while restoring the database you selected the option "preserve the replication settings(WITH KEEP_Replication)" that is why you are not able to drop the replication objects in new restored database
Try restoring with out selecting the checkbox "preserve the replication settings(WITH KEEP_Replication)" and then you should be able to drop the objects in the new restored database

Creating a "Continuous" monitor workflow & "On Demand" monitor workflow, leveraging the same script instance
Hello,
Is it possible to create:
1) a "Continuous" monitor workflow; and
2) an "On Demand" monitor workflow (i.e. OnDemandDetection)
...each of which leverage the same instance of a script (i.e. defined only once in the Management Pack)?
I created a DataSourceModuleType to host the script, which is used by a UnitMonitorType, which is used by my UnitMonitor. Since "On Demand" monitor workflows cannot make use of a DataSource module, it would appear that I have to duplicate my script in a ProbeAction module.
Is my understanding correct?

But when I open the .rtl file, I can't open the Table with Ready Thread for CPU Scheduling Graph.
I configured the system variable _NT_SYMBOL_PATH with value \symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols.
Before try open the table, I click in Load Symbols. But I still can't open the table...
Why? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!
Window Metrics Settings Still Unavailable in Windows 8 CP
Just as a reminder to Microsoft:
Missing Feature in Windows 8:
There is no dialog with which to alter desktop window metrics.
This was formerly known as Window Color & Appearance, and in Windows 7 was reachable through the Advanced appearance settings... link in the Window Color and Appearance panel.
Serious desktop users often like to reduce the sizes of various "chrome" elements, etc. This is not just vanity; it makes more room for real work.
I'd like to hope a new desktop tuning feature is being developed, since the old one was oriented toward the basic desktop, which now makes even less sense, since Windows 8 no longer supports classic themes or disabling of desktop composition.
In fact, the desktop rendering logic DOES actually abide by the settings found in the registry, which used to be directly controllable, but can now only be set through registry modifications in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics key.
Just so it's absolutely clear what I'm wanting users to be able to do:
Frankly it would be very nice to be able to reduce some of the other chrome elements as well, such as the height of the ribbon, address, and status bars in Explorer.
Please feel free to add your comment or vote if you feel you'd like to see this configurability restored in the Windows 8 RTM.

Those of us who would prefer to customize the desktop experience genuinely hope that Microsoft is going to ultimately provide the ability to configure window metrics, because of the following:
- We find it useful and/or pleasing to be able to change these things. Some want bigger fonts and more chrome, some want smaller and less.
- We believe that if the ability to configure these things via the OS is not provided by Microsoft, then it's just a matter of time before the default settings are hard-coded, so that even registry tweaks won't make it do what we want, and that this would be a step backward - for what reasons we simply can't fathom.

But your suggestion isn't without merit - if only such a beast existed. I couldn't find a large, high ppi monitor last I looked. Those old IBM T220/T221 units, at 205 ppi, are long out of production, unfortunately. Got any suggestions? As good as it gets is the Dell U2711 at 109 ppi.

Yes, it's now possible to reduce some of the chrome via legitimate tweaks to the Display settings again, and it gives me hope that maybe Microsoft has listened and will be coming out with an even more capable Aero-aware desktop metrics configuration dialog in the actual release.
With the RP the UI elements do seem to still respond to all the settings saved from a Windows 7 system, so it's possible a better 3rd party configuration function will be possible.
Somewhere, someone inside Microsoft actually has to (or WILL have to) USE this turkey of an operating system they're developing to do real things, like develop future versions of Windows, and those folks are going to drive the changes back in the proper direction. They always have.

Microsoft's argument in the Longhorn betas (as I recall reading on the shell:revealed blog) was that most settings in this dialog didn't affect visual styled-themes, they only affected themes like Classic and with Classic theme gone, they were no longer needed. BUT THEY ARE WRONG!!!! I NEED EVERY SINGLE SETTING IN THE ADVANCED APPEARANCE DIALOG BACK! STOP DUMBING DOWN THE SYSTEM, MICROSOFT AND LOCKING EVERYTHING DOWN!!!!!!! GRRRRRRR.

But is still misses the most important setting. The ability to change the Icon Spacing:

This is required for German, because most Icons have longer names compared to English.

This is really annoying. MS came up a butt ugly UI and removed almost every settings so the user could make it a bit nicer.
You say it to nice, Its a disaster the removed all the settings. I cant get contrasts right now. Its bad readable. I cant customize the font s right, no the other way seems to ignore some. ALready happy i have the start menu back. Now microsoft need to but some coals under the devs to make windows 8 desktop customizable. For people that need different fonts, colors, and contrast. Give us the advanced appearance settings back ! WHat i dont understand. you can change a color. but if you change that you cant change the active title color. with as result you dont see the window title anymore. How did the ever.......
Really dissapointed.

Hate to point out the depressingly obvious, but they "put coals under the devs" to make it UN-customizable. It was worse for a while, but apparently there were just too many "you can't get there from here" situations where they had to put a little of the customizability back.
There's really no difference in the way the desktop works - it's still Aero. It's just a hobbled version of it, that's had code deleted.
Windows is no longer about what we want in an operating system, it's about Microsoft manipulating users.
Windows 7 was a "better mousetrap" and the world beat a path to Microsoft's door. We just didn't realize we are the mice.

By the way it's possible to make it about 3% easier to see, eliminating the remnant partial transparency of the Taskbar (and icons while dragging) and adding some contrast to window borders and scroll thumbs, so that it's possible to actually differentiate them from the surroundings:
This is excerpted from my Windows 8 book:
Here's how to create an AeroLite style:
- Right-click on the desktop and choose Personalize.
- Save your current theme with a name something like "Aero Lite"
- Navigate to the following folder and edit the .theme file just created:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
- Scroll down to the [VisualStyles] section near the bottom.
- Change the Path= filename from Aero.msstyles to AeroLite.msstyles
- In Personalize, go select another theme then this theme again.

Remote Web Access music streaming problem
so i have a good size music folder on a usb 2.0 drive hooked up to my server on a usb 2.0 port. here are my details of the library
so with this i have RWA working as I can log into it and stream music. But the problem is when you log into it, it is very slow on loading the index of the music. they are in folders but I would think this would have been index some how and saved maybe? so when I first log in some of the songs show up as unable to play it does play for a sec or 2 then stops and goes to the next in cue and does the same thing. I have found a way to fix this is by going to the shared folders and go into the music folders and then I can play the songs but still very slow to index and to start playing.
I am wondering if this is due to it being on a usb drive but when i stream from the shares not though the RWA it is fine.
Just wanting to see if any one else has seen this.
oh box specs
2.2 gig amd Phenom quad core cpu
6 gig's of ram
C: drive is 750 gig
about a few usb drives and internal drives.
i did use the wizard to setup the music share.
thank you for reading and looking forward to seeing if any one else has seen this.

Only 66gb, easy enough to simply put them on the local hard drive and eliminate one problem. 10k songs is quite a lot. I would suggest creating Music1, music2 perhaps even 3 and 4 :) Make it a we bit easier for the server to sort.
as well look at http://www.serviio.org/

In rwa, click media>music>view by :songs
This should list them without all the album garbage. select several. Then at the top click play. Another Silverlight/music wall should open. Buffer, then play.
As I think about it, music1 and music2 may not help cause I think it searches all shares for media. As I might have a music video in my music share and it would show under media>videos
10k songs is prob just too much for something written in HTML :)

Well, here's the thing: I have over 49,000 songs (around 300GB worth of music/albums) all on one hard drive connected via USB 2.0 and they stream just fine. I don't think that size is an issue here (yeah, I know what that sounds like). Something else is going on to cause it to not work.

Hello all
I am experiencing the same problem. Migrated from WHS. on WHS the streaming was flawless. with WSS I simply cant get streaming to work. 70% of why I have a server is media streaming. I wonder if it has something to do with folder access? When I migrated from WHS all my media folders at first needed administrator approval to access. If I find anything else Ill post here.

SMB File Sharing Accessing windows 7 shares from XP and other devices
This is to explain how to get windows 7 file sharing to work as it did under XP using and Administrative account and pass through authentication.
1st every machine has to have the same administrative user account with the same password. Lets call it User:Admin1 Password:pass1234
So if you have 4 machines 2 XP, 1 Vista and 1 Windows 7 all four machines would need the account: admin1 with a password of pass1234
Next on the Windows 7 machine in the 'Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings' you need to set the those according the bold answers below.
Turn on network Discovery
Turn on File and printer sharing
Turn off Public Folder Sharing
Media streaming "Doesn't matter for this pick what you need."
Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryption
Turn on password protected sharing (unless you want everyone on the network to have access)
Use User accounts and passwords to connect to other computers
Finally even though everything at this point is set right and should be working it will not, and the reason it will not is due to UAC.
So Disable UAC, and reboot, now file sharing works like it did in XP. You can access the administrative shares etc... Using the built in pass through authentication and one administrator account to control them all.
The Useless Account Control seams to be the root of the problem many people are having with file sharing.
I recommend this be made a sticky until UAC is fixed.
You can find a few tweaks for some of win7's biggest annoyances on my site.

Hi .)
I'm not sure, if I'm here right to ask a question about a problem that I have with SMB Sharing on USB Disks
Following happens: I've a Win7x64 pro Machine hosting my Media on some USB Disks via SMB shares to XBMC on ATV2
Now I've changed hardware and re-installed OS. System is completly patched and there are no errors in logs or device Managers.
I plugged in the USB Disks again created shares. Trying to access the shares now results in an "Invalid Argument" Error.
I first looked for the error at the XBMC system, uninstalled, deleted the path, re-installed, but the error stays.
I know tested the following (among much other Tests)
I backed up the USB Disks, formatted the Disks, recreated the shares and copied the files back.
It worked fine, shares are accessible from XBMC until the first boot.
After rebooting the Win7x64, the invalid argument error returns.
I tested the same with shares on the local hard disks and this works anyone how often I will boot the machine.
Result: The error happens only on USB Disks, on local there is no problem.
I checked the registry after deleting the share, after formatting the Disk, after re-creating the shares... But I don't find a solution.
I connected each drive seperatly, checked at each time the USB path until all drives are at each time at the same path.
I don't connect any additional USB Hardware while booting to make sure, that paths are the same.
I'm sure the error is on the Win7x64 Pro side, but I find no solution. It seems to be something with the SMB comatibility or whatever happens to USB Shares, that results in this error.
Anyone with an idea for me to solve the problem
Thx a lot

Cannot Remove unmounted Mailbox Database
I made a mistake by just remove an offline exchange 2010 server on 2008R2 and threw away the VHD as well, no backup.
I was able to install Exhange 2010 by installing a new 2008r2 server with same name. Setup /m:RecoverServer. This worked , i was able to recover it.
But it did not recover the maildatabase obviously.
So now i cannot unstall the mail database because it is dismounted, and i cannot dismount it. Also create a new one is not possible due to the unique name.
Question is, how can i create a new database with the same ID or how can i remove the database (last one in the org) while it does not exist.
Tried following via Console and PowerShell without success.
I hope someone can help me, just want to this one server out of my environment.

Windows Management Framework 3.0 issue
Today, found there is a optional update, called:Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2506143).
So I checked it and installed it, after restart my dev vm, and when I happened open the SP PowerShell, I got an error message, said:The local farm is not accessible. Cmdlets with FeatureDependencyId are not registered.
I don't have that message before, so I realized maybe it is because that optional update, after uninstall that update, everything back to normal.
so maybe you don't want to install that update, for uninstall this update, check the link at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29939
To uninstall Windows Management Framework 3.0:Locate and uninstall the following installed Windows Update:

However..if you dont want to uninstall or if it is simply not and option for you, here is a workaround.
- Open a normal powershell session

Running powershell in version 2.0 will allow to to once again run your sharepoint cmdlets. Works like a charm for me.

Hello Soumya,
It can be issue with your Physical disks, so better take full backup of the database and restore on different drive using with MOVE option.
make sure you have valid full backup before delete your database. Please let me know your SQL version, db cmpt level if you still have issues.
Thanks,
Appala

Hi,
Check if there are entries under Saved Logs.
You may receive this message when the event log (.evtx files) has been removed from the original location and they are invalided.
Both Analytic and Debug logs are hidden and disabled by default. You need to enable Analytic and Debug logs first. And then, they will appear in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Winevt\Logs\ folder.
To enable Analytic and Debug logs, follow this:
1. Open the Event View.
2. Navigate to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Application Server-Applications > Analytic or Debug.
3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
4. On the properties dialog box, select Enable logging and click OK.

You can creat a new account to test

these 2 files are missing in the directory, that's the problem.
i dig up from the net, trial 1 thing.
found the reg key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels\Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-Applications/Analytic
Enabled is zero. Enable it at event viewer doesn't work.
so i changed it here to one, for the other key as well.
reboot. now this error:
the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a wmi data provider (4201)
i dig the net again, check Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup , the security is fully accessible by System account, same for System32\Winevt\Logs
anyone know how to fix this 4201 thing?

resolved by in-place upgrade/reinstall the os
after the reinstall/upgrade, there are no such logs.
probably created by VS2012/TFS/SQLSvr some developer apps.

Hi,
Please try the following:
1. Rename the Windows Update temporary folders:
1) Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2) Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
net stop CryptSvc
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
net start CryptSvc
net start wuauserv
pause
3) After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop.
4) Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator".
5) You will see a DOS-like window processing.
Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved.
2. Reset Windows Update components.

i run out of options
so i revert my tweaking, in order to try in-place upgrade
however, i got this error during the process:
Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
i guess in-place upgrade can't work over installed win7 "sp1" from win7 dvd ?
