Could Sinofsky's departure be a glimmer of hope?
Now regardless why exactly Sinofsky left, you've got to admit that him leaving just after around two weeks after Windows 8's launch sends signals. Why haven't they kept him for some additional months, at least for show and to inspire confidence?
Maybe that sudden rid-off is a signal, sort of like "we're sorry, start menu coming in next SP" thing?

The return of the start menu, no pun intended, is just the start.
Was "aero" a gimmick? A useless hunk of eyecandy meant to deliver little but a method of being able to charge for an upgrade? Perhaps. But it is slick, it is smooth, and it does offer at least a glimer of functionality. In other words, once you get used to the fact that it was there, when it goes missing it "feels" like a step backward.
How about rounded edges (still part of aero in the grand scheme) of windows and dialog boxes? Well, perhaps nothing to get excited about, but again, it added some flair that once gone missing, makes one wonder what was truly to be gained by removing it.
The (insert immature long string of explatives and disparaging terms thrown about wildly here) "Start Screen"? Perfect for tablets, marginal utility for desktop/laptop, (live tiles are clunkier versions of the gadgets Sinofski helped throw under the bus). Key here is, if you like the start screen, you should be able to use it. If you think the start screen has no place whatsoever on your display, you should be able to turn it off.
The key here is, not only were questionable changes made, but core funtionality hidden or reduced in scope.
Search was supposed to be a viable subsitute for a menu? There are perhaps 100x a week (or more) where I need to check something, let's use device manager for instance. Count the clicks ---> Start, Control Panel, Device Manager. (3 clicks). That amounts to something like 1.5 seconds or so to accomplish.
In Win8 you are supposed to be able to do it "faster" by using the keyboard search. But I don't WANT to use the keyboard, I've been checking device manager with the mouse, almost without thinking, for over a decade. There are MANY times I want to check something, and the mouse is the quick native way of doing so. I hate the very concept of using the keyboard when there was no good reason to remove the funtionality in the first place. I wasn't planning on typing anything when I got there, there is no excuse for my hands having to touch the keyboard at all. None.
What Sinofski removed was choice. In his zeal to "reimagine Windows", he removed windows from it. There is absolutely no reason MS couldn't have made the installer function by way of device-centric installs, where a desktop comes up looking like Win7, but having the option to enable the start screen. There is no reason "metro" couldn't have been a shell for desktops users, and the main view for tablets. For Intel-based tablets, there is no reason Win8 couldn't have defaulted to the start screen, but allow the user to default to the desktop if they wanted to. That same installer could see is the machine was ARM based, the proper solution was the Start Screen and Metro as the default.
But the maddening switching back and forth between desktop and "start screen"? That was pure arrogance, and for that, I can honestly say I hope Sinofski's departure WASN'T of his own choosing, I sorely hope he was pushed out the door under threat of force.
I have several coworkers that have (or had) Windows phones, and they really liked the concept of Win8. That is of course until they tried to move to productivity vs media consumption. They love their phones, most of them actively complaining that there is no good reason Windows phone could not hve been made to capture more market share AND branch out to tablets, but once they tried to perform "desktop" (or laptop) traditional multi-window muli-tasking, not a single one of them could understand why the hell Sinofski purposefully "broke" windows as he most assuredly did.
Of course we don't know yet how/why Sinofski is gone, but if it is due to poor market share or the utter rejection in enterprize computing, I simply can't wait to see how all of the fanboi's back-peddle out of the quagmire they purposefully drove headlong into. And most of you know the ones I'm talking about.

Um, they must have smoked lots of weed to think otherwise. Has anyone at MS REALLY thought this thing gonna fly in the enterprise?
I always thought they were absolutely willing to experiment with W8 on the consumer and let W7 still be the darling of the business consumers. In other words, I thought they KNEW that it would flop in business but had the hope to capture consumers with it.
If they really thought W8 would be a hit in the biz.. good God!

Sorry but I'm not at liberty to disclose any details about the deployment

So Microsoft is so proud of the massive deployment...they won't let you talk about it? Is there a whitepaper on it? 30k seats would be one of the largest deployments of Windows 8 outside of Microsoft...and possibly the largest production deployment of a RC product this year...but you can't talk about it or point us to any references that it happened or lessons learned? Comeon. Unless it was a complete flop...Microsoft would be shouting that kind of deployment from the rooftops. How did the users handle things? What was the resultant ROI? Where are the deployment scripts? Where are the metrics?

No, I don't think you work for MS, but I do think you were part of a TAP program to deploy Windows 8....otherwise why deploy beta to end-users en mass...unless MS basically kicked you the licenses, hardware, and support for free? In that case, MS generally expects the effort to be presented as a full case study to promote the technology. In the case of Windows 8...with all the controversy...I would have expected MS to contractually obligate the customer to expose all the details of the engagement....so they could use that in sales presentations and other media to promote the implementation of Windows 8 and work out the kinks. Otherwise...why even have the TAP in the first place?
Unless you are saying that you just went ahead and decided as per this companies policy to deploy Windows 8 beta products as standard. That seems crazy...so I'm assuming it was a TAP participant you are referring to.
I will say I've never heard of any company deploying such a large number of beta OS to end-users without advertising as such. From my experience in a similar MS TAP program, being a member of the TAP program excludes privacy provisions and once the project is complete (ie Windows 8 has now hit RTM), all the details are free to discuss and public whitepapers are required (or the company takes a huge penalty). Obviously no government agency would ever consider deploying a beta OS...therefore the company you refer to must be public...and cannot claim governmental exclusions for secrecy. Public companies under TAP must divulge deployment details. In your case, whatever project you worked on seems to be an exception to the rule...as you can't tell us anything. I find that very unusual. That is not like MS at all....as there would be no benefit for MS to participate with that company. Why would MS want to help a company deploy 30k copies of Windows 8 to the end users, but not want anyone to know about it?

Wow, it's hard to imagine anyone actually deploying a beta operating system across their enterprise. Even if Windows 8 was a geek's wet dream that's an incredible decision. Where do you find executives who would approve such a thing? Gotta admit, the price was right though. ;-)

SMB2 optimization fails with files located on a Windows 2008 R2 fileserver
Hello,
we have the following problem: We have two locations one in Austria and one in Germany. Our fileserver is located in Austria. Between these two loacations we are using a Cisco WAN opitmizer infrastructure so that file access from Germany gets optimized to our server in Austria. All of our German clients are using Windows 7. Our fileserver is using Windows 2008R2. We have noticed that Windows 7 in combination with Windows 2008 R2 is very chatty. So we have massive problems in optimizing that traffic.
Furthermore we have contact Cisco for an official statement about this topic. The official statement was the following: "As you may know file create/open is a synchronous operation which means the client needs to wait for the server to return status. The WAAS (or any other device from any other vendor) cannot optimize or eliminate this and thus eliminate the delay."
Why are Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 so chatty and sending such a big amount of SMB2 create statements? Why does it need to recursivly read the whole folder structure as can be seen in the create requests? Is it not possible to change that behaviour?
Please advice!
Many Thanks to your answers!

I am unsuccessful at updating the outbound flow definition because the option to select useraccesscontrol under flag:Integer is not available. Am I missing something?

Hi Markus,
First off, excellent article!
In order for the SR to "read" the existing value, don't you also have to create an Inbound flow for userAccountControl and contribute it to the metaverse? Since this is not there by default, it requires a schema extension for the person object in the MV.
I could not see userAccountControl in the "Source" tab of the Outbound SR until I had added it previously through an Inbound SR.

The focus so far was just about how to set the values from a technical perspective - which means, how to set or clear the related bit.
However, you are right, I should add a section about the complete lifecycle to the article.

just a question about your bit mask value of '9223372036854775805'.
I think that since FIM's integers are 64 bit signed integers and that value is positive, it has the first bit set to 0. Shouldn't the signed 64 bit integer with all bits set but the second one be -3?

Yep, great article. It's a bit strange that the article doesnt show what I would think that most people could use. Get it? "A bit Strange" :)
Anyway, it just my humble opinion that this would more useful if we could just provide the actual steps in the FIM UI to manipulate the userAccountControl on an OSR to AD. I am easily confused and it just seems to me that showing how to flow this attribute into FIM would not be as useful to the general community as much as flowing the attribute in an AD OSR.
I think Jorge's http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/archive/2010/07/29/managing-the-useraccountcontrol-attribute-in-ad-by-fim.aspx comes close but if you are a newbie it really is very difficult to actually set the OSR up from that. In the TechNet documentation the examples only really show direct flows such as "userAccountControl => 514". This is fine if we don't care about the other bits.

Forgot Password - WindowsLive Hotmail Account - Need it to engage MacMail on OSX10 Mountain Lion ...
I am assisting my neighbour to switch from WindowsLive Hotmail to MacMail as noted in the title.
Is there anyone who can direct me to how to contact the WindowsLive Team in order for them to assist me to retrieve the password [which they have given to me but it is not being accepted by Hotmail].
My neighbour was finding it far too difficult to work on the Hotmail Live screen. The MacMail screen is much easier for someone like her who is not computer savvy - in fact - has never been exposed to a computer until her grown children gave to her a MacBook as a Christmas present 3 years ago. She wants to learn and I am giving her lessons au gratis.
I would appreciate assistance and thank you in advance for taking the time to do so.

Hello, Mike,
Thank you, for your information. It was appreciated hearing from you.
I tried the links you sent to me and upon trying to find where to place a posting on this subject, I still was not able to do so not that this is something you need to know about.
I did considerable searching, hours in fact, trying to find the right forum. I am not as familiar with MSN Live Hotmail as I am other forums such as Apple, Adobe and MSW Office.
While continuing to search for help, upon contacting my neighbour's ISP for several issues including this one, the technician offered advice as to what to do even though it was not part of their mandate to do so. I have resolved the issue by opening a new Hotmail account, went to MacMail and all actions fell into place.
My neighbour does not have the capacity to close their previous account and I cannot do it for them.
Apologies, for taking up your time to provide backgrounder on this matter but I felt it should be known how much effort was made on my part to resolve this problem and that I am sensitive about not contacting the correct forum as I do not wish to impose upon other resources.
Thank you!

Hey Genviev,
Thanks very much for sharing this feedback about how much time you spent helping your friend. I understand that finding the right place to ask a question is sometimes a formidable task, as I also have to do that from time to time. I'm very glad that you were able to find help from your ISP, even if it wasn't their normal job. Your friend is lucky to have you!
I hope you don't mind me suggesting a few tips? One is that if you can post screenshots of the issue you're having, it can help your readers understand exactly what you're trying to explain in text. If you press alt-printscreen, open Microsoft Paint, and then click on Edit->Paste, you can save a screenshot of your screen to a file, and then post that picture on the forums. When your readers can see what you see, it helps us understand so much more about what is happening for you. The only thing to watch out for is to make sure not to include sensitive personal information in the screenshot. You can use the other tools in the paint program to cover up any sensitive information.
Now, for your issue, please click here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/liveid and then ask about closing your neighbor's account. They should be able to help you.
Thanks!

Bug: Windows 7 deletes folder instead of selected file!
There's a similar thread about this issue, started as a bug report on Windows Vista, and continued on with evidence on Windows 7.
The bug still exists.
One respondent to that thread stated:
"Yes, it's true that (Windows 7) in order to have the folder highlighted the same color as the sub-folder or file (in the right/main pane) you have to do some action on the parent folder last (i.e. shift-tab, click parent folder, or even! just expand the parent folder) ONLY the parent folder at that time should be highlighted."
This is not actually true. I have witnessed the target of SHIFT-DELETE not being the last item clicked.
Just this afternoon, I went to delete a child folder within C:\Temp\.
I clicked on the folder.
I hit SHIFT-DELETE.
I hit ENTER in the same split second that I noticed that the interface was asking me if I wanted to permanently delete C:\Temp.
Luckily, it was a temporary folder.
BUT the fact remains that Windows 7 occasionally selects for deletion the parent folder of the intended target when users elect to SHIFT-DELETE.
Compounding the matter further is the poor visual cues, as shown below...

Possible Server 2008 R2 Issue with 'Delete this Record when it becomes stale'
Ok
So the server is set to scavenge after 7 days
The Zone is set to scavenge 7/7
The record has a TTL of 1 day.
Now for the issue... When ticking the delete record when it becomes stale on a manually created record from DNSMGMT and also a record from dnscmd /recordadd I refresh the zone with F5 and magically the tick is no longer there!
Anyone seen this behavior before?
The Server is 2K8-R2
The domain and Forest are operating at 2K3 FL

Session List
I tried to monitor who is trying to access my computer in my domain. I tried to use Sessions view of the Shared Folders snap-in but I found something strange about it. It reports me a new session from various workstations in my domain almost every 30 seconds which will be terminated some seconds after. Actually nobody tried to access my computer and I'm almost sure that all computers in my network are virus-free (they have updated anti-virus). In addition for each session it displays me two equal records with lowercase and uppercase usernames. The following picture demonstrates what is happening for me. Does anybody know what's the source of my problem?

SCSM Console permanently crashing
Hi,
we have a stringe issue here. Since approx. 2 Weeks on 5 of our servers (including 2 SCSM Management-Servers, 1 x Orchestrator, 2 x Remote Desktop Server) the SCSM console crashes during the start process of the console. I click on the icon and after about 30 Seconds the app crashes. It leaves an error with kernelbase.dll and errorcode 0xe053534f.
Based on my research this error code is a stack overflow. I've tried to do a deeper analysis with DebugDiag but was not successfull - just that an unknown error in kernelbase.dll happens.
Currently we only have one server left and all Client consoles are still working fine - haven't found any issue yet.
What I've done already for troubleshooting so far:
Checked the SCSM console version between the working and not working server --> same
Checked the Windows OS Service Pack version between the working and not working server -->same
Windows Updates: Are not similar between the servers - but the servers weren't updated since the error was there.
Uninstalled the SCSM console
Deleted the user profile
Checked the virus scan engine version between the working and not working server --> same
Rebooted the server(s)
On the Remote Desktop Server every user account is affected from that problem - so it's a console issue and not user related
More ideas what I should check?

Hi !
Thats weird.
I know you deleted the Userprofile, just to be sure, did you delete the Userhive of the registry to make sure the console starts clean ?
I´m sure you know that but for everybody else.

Hi Roman,
this is nothing I did in specific - so I just deleted the "Console" Key and now the console is crashing without an error message :-)
Weired - DebugDiag still lists the same error code. Well - looks like I need to open a supportcase for further troubelshooting.

Hi,
OK - this just happens when DebugDiag is started too. As soon as DebugDiag is disabled (the rule) than the same error as described above is visible. Damn! :-)

Hi !
Did i understand you right that you are running the console via RDP on the Servers.
If this is the case, did you try running the console on a local machine. What happens then ?
Furthermore, is this a "clean" implementation or are any customizations in it (Class Extensions). Maybe remove all sealed MP´s ...
What i´m also thinkig of is that the console constantly consumes RAM while running, up to 1,5Gb in my environement. If you run it on a virtual environement, maybe disable dynamic memory ? Is it possible to have a hardware memory problem ?
Regards/RS

yes - we are running the consoles with RDP on the servers. On any Windows Vista/Windows 7 machine the customer is using we do not see an issue - they are working fine.
The implementation was built with SCSM 2010 SP1 back in December 2010 and has many customizations (Class Extensions, Form customizations etc.) Currently the System is running with SCSM 2012 RU2. We cannot uninstall the sealed MPs from the system - thats not possible within that environment and again: Currently 5 servers are affected - still one server left where everything works fine and the client consoles (more than 30) are also working fine.
There is no dynamic memory enabled - one of the SCSM management servers (but not the workflow server) is a phyiscal machine and it is also affected from the problem.

Hi Peter !
Ok, it is server-related, hmmm .... tricky Problem.
What doest the OpsMgr Eventlog tell you. Can you focus on the timeframe 2 weeks ago ?
Have there been any changes ?
Driverupdates of the virtualization software ?
I´m also running out of ideas, but it seems it is something AROUND the console...

We need to create Active directory ? why ?
If yes . how we configure it ?
We need 1 forest with 1 domian with 2 child domain ?
Note : in future we need to use Exchange 2010Note : 1 server in Tehran and Shiraz has capabilaity Virtualization

As far as the network is concerned it is ok... although you may have some issues with the 128K Link (why do you need this?)
You do not need AD but I would advise it to be a good idea for user management and if you are going to implement Exchange then you will definitely need AD as this is the platform where it sits. 1 forest, 1 domain is the new standard. Everything else can be done with rights management.

Yes you need AD. Without it Exchange cannot be implemented.
1 forest 1 domain. Is the Microsoft recommendation to keep things simple unless you have a valid business case for anything else this is what I would implement.
If you need a design solution there is nowhere near enough information provided,,,
What are the functions of the branch locations?
Where are the applications?
What applications will be used?
Are files to be stored in each location or central?
Exchange itself has many design considerations where mailboxes will be kept, what lookups are required from GCs etc
AD has many design considerations as well, GPOs, Replication, Server placement, types of AD server, RODC, RWDC
Hope this helps.

What is the criteria you are trying to set?
The error suggest you are trying to do something for which you do not have persmissions or which violates a database constrain or something like that.

Unable to change user profile syncronization service
It is set to my farm account when I create a new user profile service application. On trying to change it to another account the following error is displayed.

I have the same exact problem and error. Everything was working fine setup under one account. That account was local admin and admin on DB server. Sharepoint health alerted to running the farm on a admin account so I changed the farm to run on a non admin account. Now the user profile sync service won't start or configure the Forefront identiy manager service/sync services.
I try to change the user profile service to use the same sp farm account and I get the above error.
I have setup the correct SPNs for kerberos and trusted the sharepoint server, database server and service accounts for delgation. I also gave those accounts the "replicating directory changes" at the domain root level in ADUC.
If I change the farm back to the original account that was working, I still can't start the services.

You only need to do as it says; delete the failed job:
- Open Central Administration -> Monitoring -> Job Definitions.
- Browse to the last page
- Delete the job: Windows Service "FIMSynchronizationService" Credential Deployment
- Go back to Security -> Configure Service Accounts and reset your UPS service to your farm account.

Realtek Ethernet Controller Driver: The Realtek Network Controller was not found
Hey everyone, just built my first computer, and long story short getting the following error:
Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled please plus the cable.
I've tried multiple compatibility methods, still won't recognize and install - got the drivers from my motherboard's website, which says compatible with Windows 8 x64. Can't find my Ethernet adapter in my Device Manager at all either (have my wireless USB adapter and a MS Kernel Debug Network Adapter listed, no Unknown Devices.
Anyone run into these issues and find a fix? I read somewhere to clear my CMOS but I don't see that option in my BIOS.
I really want to get this fixed; having a ton of other issues but I want to get the hardware all down and set so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

But you have installed the driver from the motherboard vendor?
Have you checked in bios so the nic is not disabled?

Reply:
I installed the drivers from the disk, after removing the ones I got from here:
(won't let me copy and paste the url:) biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=536#dl
didn't do the Chipset one at all, Onboard Audio works fine, USB Controller installed I think (I wired something wrong, gotta fix that still), Serial ATA I'm skipping. I'm getting my errors from the original post with the On Board LAN Win 8 Drivers for version 8.003.0730.2012. My network adapter says enabled but I'll check again. Thanks
Shows as updated. I'm really lost, trying to lookup solutions; other people seem to get this but their Realtek is showing in Device Manager.

Try to install the chipset drivers also, sometimes devices are on a "shared bus" so the bus will need a driver Before the nic device will get detected.

Reply:
I just installed the chipset drivers too and rebooted, doublechecked it was enabled in BIOS; still not appearing / getting the same error if I try to install
Its weird cause if I run it again it thinks it's installed (I can repair and remove). I'll reach out to Biostar but if you can think of anything else. Thanks again man

Hi,
I also checked the Realtek website and found there was not Windows 8 driver for Realtek network adapter. Please try the one for Windows 7 with compatibility mode and see if it works:
As the network adapter could not be found in Device Manager, please also check it with Biostar.
Thanks.Nicholas Li
