SBS 2011 - really strange shared drives access issue over PPTP VPN
Guys,
I have following problem: When connected to company network over PPTP VPN, Authentication is taking place on the SBS2011 box, I can't browse shared drives by name but I can by IP (\\10.0.0.x\ - is working, but \\hostname\ - is not ), first I thought that it's DNS issue but I can ping server by IP and by name and I can rdp to the server by name.
When typing \\hostname\ in search line I see: Network error, windows cannot access \\hostname\, you do not have permission to access \\hostname. Contact your network administrator to request access. But when typing \\10.0.0.x can see shared resources straight away !
I'm authenticated as domain admin and have all requested access rights.
Please help ! :(
Thanks,
Marius

DAG replication between sites
dears,
I wud like to know if i have 6 Mailbox servers
3 on Site A >> Mbx01 , Mbx02 and Mbx03
3 on Site B >> Mbx04 , Mbx05 and Mbx06
and they all join DAG replication.
my question is if i want to have an active Database (DB01) in Mbx01 and 5 passive copies in the rest of servers , how is the DAG replicate this Database i means does it send (the Edb and logs) 5 times to each mailbox server , which means if im going to replicate (1Gb edb file + 500 Mb log) , i'll send (3 Gb + 1500 Mb) to Site B ?

BR, Mohamed Wahab "Egypt Cyber Center"
Reply:
It depends, on how you do the replication for the active database to the nodes that you want to hold a passive copy. If you replicate DB01 from MBX01 to MBX04, then you would be replicating 1.5 gigs over the wire, or wan. Then once MBX04 has a copy of the databse, you can use MBX04 as the seeding source to create copies on MBX05, and MBX06.

Reply:
Intially you would send 3gb + 1500mb. Once the seeding is done you are going to replicate just the logs

Thkx Guys
I think initially as "skipster" said , i'll send the (1 GB edb) to one of DR mailbox servers , then i'll use that Server as a seeding point for other servers in DR site
So initally i'll seed (1 Gb edb) .
but as for initial log i don't know if i'll send 3 x 500 MB or 0 Mb !! but then it will work with log shipping described by "mboppe".

Reply:
Hi,
Initially You would seed the updated .edb file to one of secondary site server from Primary site along with rest of the log files. You cannot determine this much log files needs to be replicated (3X500MB). Exchange will copy the log files available during the seed operation. Once copied to one of secondary site server the log files will be updated to the .edb file. from that server you can initiate to rest of the server in secondary site.

So it's as "skipster" said , initially seeding 1.5 Gb and use it as source for secondry site ,then the normal log shipping will work as the article sent by "mboppe" , right !?

Not certain, but the best way would be to use a powershell script, but I would imagine it would be quite extensive.
There is an application by Silect Studios that might be able to help you find out what monitors are running on all of your agents.

How to trace & audit who had disabled Task Scheduler History?
Hi All,
I have a 2008 R2 server with a number of tasks running in Task Scheduler regularly, and I need to monitor their running status daily via in the 'History' tab. Now today, I abruptly found that the History had been disabled. To my surprise, I cannot find any clue in the EventViewer (or I may not find the right method to find it). I have also tried with the local group policy and also had nothing found in there.
Does anyone know how to audit & trace who did this wrong thing?

SQL 2008 SP2 DB Mirroring - Assertion Failure
Hey all,
I figured I'd pose this issue before opening up an issue with MSDN, but has anyone else encountered/fixed the following assertion error on the mirror server?
SQL Server Assertion: File: <loglock.cpp>, line=807 Failed Assertion = 'result == LCK_OK'. This error may be timing-related. If the error persists after rerunning the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity, or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures are not corrupted.
Reply:
Hi,
Service pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 allegedly includes all previous cumulative updates 1 - 8 for SP1; so you should already have the same fix as mentioned in SP1 CU5.
Are you just running the release version of SP2?
If not already, you could try installing the latest CU3 for SP2 and seeing if this resolves your issue:

Server side even handling with SP Ribbon
Team,
I have a situation to handle server side function in the customized SP ribbon tabs. Can you please guide me how to achieve it?. It's quite urgent to achieve it.
Reply:
Hi Shankhar,
As per you request, you may need to use SPRibbonPostBackCommand to create a command pro-grammatically that emits the JS code necessary to perform a server post back. And also this technique needs custom page component.
Please look at the below steps and code snippets and you may need to modify the below code as per your requirements.
The steps are...
Step1 --> To add a new user control, choose Project | Add New Item. Select User control in the Add New Item dialog and set the name to CustomRibbonHeader.ascx,
Step2 --> The new user control will be placed in the ControlTemplates/Chapter3 folder by default. In the CustomRibbonHeader.ascx file, add the following markup:
<SharePoint:ScriptLink Name="SP.js" LoadAfterUI="true" OnDemand="false" Localizable="false" runat="server" ID="ScriptLink1" />
<SharePoint:ScriptLink Name="CUI.js" LoadAfterUI="true" OnDemand="false" Localizable="false" runat="server" ID="ScriptLink2" />
<SharePoint:ScriptLink Name="/_layouts/Chapter3/Chapter3.PageComponent.js" LoadAfterUI="true" OnDemand="false" Localizable="false" runat="server" ID="ScriptLink3" />
This code snippet uses ScriptLink controls to ensure that all required scripts are loaded. SP.js contains core functions for the JavaScript Client Object Model, whereas CUI.js contains functions necessary for the operation of the ribbon.
Step3 --> In the Elements.xml file containing our CustomAction element, add the following element after the closing tag of the CustomAction element:
<Control Id="AdditionalPageHead" Sequence="49"
ControlSrc="~/_controltemplates/Chapter3/CustomRibbonHeader.ascx"/>
the existing Group element:
<Group Id="Chapter3.SecondDemoGroup" Description="Contains Demo controls"
Title="Demo Group 2" Sequence="51"
Template="Ribbon.Templates.SingleButton">
<Controls Id="Chapter3.SecondDemoGroup.Controls">
<Button Id="Chapter3.SecondDemoGroup.HelloWorld" Command="Chapter3.HelloWorldServerCommand"
Sequence="15"
Image16by16="/_layouts/images/NoteBoard_16x16.png"
Image32by32="/_layouts/images/NoteBoard_32x32.png"
Description="Displays a Hello World message" LabelText="Hello World"
TemplateAlias="c1"/>
</Controls>
</Group>
Step5 --> So that the new group will display properly, we need to add a Scaling/MaxSize element. Between the existing MaxSize and Scale elements, add the following element:
<MaxSize Id="Chapter3.SecondDemoGroup.MaxSize"
GroupId="Chapter3.SecondDemoGroup" Size="OneLarge"/>
Step6 --> Add the following code to the CustomRibbonHeader.ascx.cs file:
public partial class CustomRibbonHeader : UserControl,IPostBackEventHandler
{
public void RaisePostBackEvent(string eventArgument)
{
SPRibbonPostBackEvent pbEvent =
SPRibbonPostBackCommand.DeserializePostBackEvent(eventArgument);
SPContext.Current.List.Title = "Updated " + DateTime.Now;
SPContext.Current.List.Update();
}
protected override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e)
{
List<IRibbonCommand> commands = new List<IRibbonCommand>();
commands.Add(new SPRibbonPostBackCommand("Chapter3.HelloWorldServerCommand",
this, "true"));
SPRibbonScriptManager sm = new SPRibbonScriptManager();
sm.RegisterGetCommandsFunction(this.Page, "getGlobalCommands", commands);
sm.RegisterCommandEnabledFunction(this.Page, "canHandleCommand", commands);
sm.RegisterHandleCommandFunction(this.Page, "handleCommand", commands);
}
}
Step7 --> Make the following modification to the Chapter3.PageComponent.js file:
Chapter3.PageComponent.prototype = {
init: function () { },
getFocusedCommands: function () {return [''];},
isFocusable: function () { return true; },
receiveFocus: function () { return true; },
yieldFocus: function () { return true; },
getGlobalCommands: function () {
var commands = getGlobalCommands();
return commands.concat(['Chapter3.HelloWorldCommand']);
},
canHandleCommand: function (commandId) {
if (commandId == 'Chapter3.HelloWorldCommand') {
return true;
}
else {
return commandEnabled(commandId);
}
},
handleCommand: function (commandId, properties, sequence) {
if (commandId === 'Chapter3.HelloWorldCommand') {
var notificationId =
SP.UI.Notify.addNotification('Hello World from page component');
}
else {
return handleCommand(commandId, properties, sequence);
}
}
}
Step8 --> Deploy the revised solution

Cannot remote Desktop into Vista Business Machine From Windows 7
Hi there,
I need some help please! I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64 on my main machine and am having trouble getting remote desktop to log into a Vista Business 64-bit machine.
It see the remote Pc, but keeps coming up with the crednetials dont work' error message. I know my username and password are OK. The Windows 7 machine will remote desktop into my WHS 2001 and the same machine running windows 7, but not when running Vista, so I know its not a network issue or an issue with my windows 7 machine.
The machine is a vanilla build of Vista, up to date SP2 with no applications running yet. I've tried turning off the firewall but that didn't help, and I made sure the user account is in the administrator group, and the remote access group (obviously remote desktop is turned on too!).
Any ideas what may be causing this? I'm completely stuck. Thanks!

Number of Questions on a Microsoft Exam
Hi Folks,
Ever so often, a newbie lamb-to-the-slaughter wanders into this forum and innocently asks about the number of questions on a given Microsoft exam. Immediately the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) sledgehammers come out, bludgeoning the poor newbie from all angles until he flees for safety, bruised and battered, probably to a friendly brain dump site.
Of course I'm exaggerating a little, but not by much. I can understand protecting the integrity of Microsoft exams by not disclosing their content, but what unfair advantage does it give a candidate to have an idea of the number of questions to expect.
When we chase him away, all he has to do is Google the exam number, e.g, 70-680, and more than half of the top search results will be brain dump sites. There he will discover not only the number of questions, but the questions and answers as well. Can you want it any easier than that?
And here's the kicker. I recently downloaded some TechEd 2012 Exam Cram sessions where the trainer clearly stated the number of questions to expect. And this was from Microsoft's own website!
My simple question is this. When someone comes to our forum asking for assistance, instead of going to a brain dump site, shouldn't we try to encourage him however we can, or should we make his reception so inhospitable that he'll take flight to the nearest provider of easy answers with no questions asked?
I'm off my soap box now, so feel free to reply if you want. Thanks.

Reply:
It's not about "unfair advantage", it's about NDA. If the information has not be released by Microsoft, releasing it is in breach of exam NDA.
Microsoft does not release the number of questions in an exam for a reason; there's NO guarantee that just because I had 48 questions, the very next person will have 48 questions (This is especially true for adaptive exams where the number of questions changes depending on the circumstance of the exam). Until Microsoft change their position on releasing the number of questions in an exam, doing so will remain a breach of exam NDA
With regards to the Exam Cram TechEd 2012 session, I will be looking into that further as that information is clearly in breach of exam NDA therefore should not be available for download. Also, although this content came from the TechEd 2012 website, it doesn't mean that it is endorsed by Microsoft as the TechEd owners may not know about exam NDA.

Hi Mr. Wharty,
It's always a pleasure to hear from you. As usual, I defer to your wisdom and experience, and therefore have only the following two comments to make.
1) Microsoft's NDA notwithstanding, I don't think anyone is asking for the exact number of test questions. They simply want an idea of how many questions to expect, simply a ball-park figure. As you said, there are no guarantees as to exact number, but people would still want some idea of the number so they can prepare mentally.
2) I believe that going after a TechEd Exam Cram session because the presenter stated how many questions to expect would be unnecessarily petty. It's like trying to stop a crime wave by arresting litterers and jay walkers while murderers and rapists are on the rampage. That's why the brain dump sites are so popular. People come here to ask a question and get browbeaten, so they go the brain dumpers and get the whole exam for free. It doesn't make sense. We need to encourage people, not discourage them. That's my 2 cents worth.
Anyhow, I truly appreciate your excellent work in this forum. Keep up the good work.
James

I agree with what you're saying and don't necessarily agree with all of the NDA however we have to live with it and work within the rules.
In reply to 1), I've been accused of being "unhelpful" and "unprofessional" in the past for advising forum members of a ball park figure (and for not divulging question types). People want the exact number and don't appreciate being told it's between xxx and yyy as they believe not knowing the exact number of questions is going to cause them to fail an exam. Citing NDA makes the situation very easy to deal with.
In reply to 2), The people who present Exam Cram sessions at TechEd are MCT's who know better than to divulge NDA restricted content.
You may classify the action of looking into a NDA breach as "petty" however Microsoft takes NDA breaches very seriously and if the particular MCT continues to breach exam NDA, there's a real risk they will have all their certifications revoked (thus losing their MCT status) and be forbidden from sitting future exams. Having the content removed and reminding the MCT of exam NDA will ensure that their career isn't ruined by a (potential)mistake.
With regards to dump sites etc, Microsoft uses forensic science to identify users of dump files and they have been very successful in catching and suspending many cheats. They have also been successful in prosecuting dump distributors. What people don't understand is that just visiting a website known to distribute dumps is sufficient grounds for Microsoft to take action. Browsing the web isn't as anonymous as people believe :-)
BTW, and I'm not confirming that this does/doesn't occur, but who's to say that a dump file hasn't been released by an entity with the sole intention of catching out cheats? Something to ponder :-)

Hi Mr. Wharty,
Thanks for your reply. You've given me much food for thought.
After your disclosure about the possibility of MCTs losing their credentials, I have decided not to publish the links to the TechEd 2012 content. I don't think I should risk the career of an MCT over something like this.
Regarding the quantum of questions, I still think you can give newbies a ballpark on the number of exam questions, but on this we can agree to disagree.
Finally, regarding the info on Microsoft's response to the brain dumpers, this is good information to have, and I'm sure we'll all be mindful of this going forward. The part about a dump file being a possible trap seems like an innovative way to catch the unwary cheater. Cheaters beware!!!
Thanks again for this very useful information. I've marked your reply as helpful.

Thought I'd provide the following reply from Liberty Munson (Microsoft's psychometrician) regarding Microsoft's view on releasing exam question counts:
Although the number of items is not explicitly identified in the NDA, "disseminating exam content" is, and we consider the number of items on an exam to be part of "exam content." More important, both the number of items and length of exam can change at any time as we continue to maintain the validity and reliability of the exam. Sharing this level of information sets expectations for candidates that may not be appropriate when they take the exam and even speculating on this does a significant disservice to candidates who are preparing for the exam because it may change the way they study for and take the exam.

Storage analytics viewer
Azure storage analytics is a very useful feature. It can help to isolate and
debug Storage related issue. However, the metrics and log is not quite
visible/readable for users.
Here I wrote a storage analytics viewer, it
can make the analytics data eaiser to fetch and view. Features listed below:
- Retrive the log data based on given time range and save to Excel format for
further mining. - Show the metrics data in chart, so that it can be more readable
- Some simple filter option.
The viewer can be downloaded from

Awesome scripts Brad. Those steps always seemed overly complex, error-prone and scriptable.
Would be great if the product team could use these to make the installer friendlier and more robust. I already had a connect item logged for just that.

Thanks Brad. Very helpfull but you have an error on that line.
The second "=" must not be there.
$NewWMISDDL = $CurrentWMISDDL.SDDL += "(" + $WMISDDL + ")"

Hi Brad,
For your reference, I am getting the following error when executing this script with administrator permissions.

IE10 for Win7 is infected! It has the same lovely 3.1 feel like IE10 on desktop W8. Lots of white. Very visible with the scrollbar and dropdown lists.
Also, flat buttons on default. Surely fits with Windows 7!
