Managing Concurrent SCCM 2007 OS Deployments
Are there any best practices for understanding the maximum numbers of clients that can be deployed at any one time?
This is with reference to a Windows terminal client which due to a size limitation of the flash disk, won't support multicast OSD.
Obviously much of this is network dependent and QOS will limit what we have available. In a scenario where we have a single subnet that's hope to a single DP and all our clients are there any limitations within SCCM 2007 itself? Site server to site server communication and distribution have control for concurrent sends. The computer client agent has throttling for BITS based activities which includes OSD (surely BITS won't be available until the OS image has been downloaded), but that's only throttling and not a delayed or rejection of the task.
I'm trying to relate this to the imaging process:
- PXE boot and load PXE image - No SCCM client so no restrictions other than the network QOS
- Download of the WIM - As above so limitations are purely network based. Therefore we could start 100 machines imaging at once but wait a very long time for them all to complete
- Task Sequence - SCCM client utilised early on in the process so computer agent throttling will come into play; 50Kbps maximum per client soon involves a significant chunk of bandwidth. However the bulk of the data volume is in steps 1 & 2, step 3 is software packages which are relatively insignificant size wise.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Not much extra to offer here beyond what you've outlined above.
There are no strict limitations in ConfigMgr for number of clients per DP although 4,000 is the stated supported number.
The only statement above that has me puzzled is flash disks and Multicast? Those really have nothing to do with each other. Are you saying thr flash disks won't support it because they aren't big enough to perform the normal download and execute task sequence and must run everything from the DP?
Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com
------------------------------------
Reply:
The flash disk limitiation is purely free space. We have 4GB flash disk, a 1.4GB compressed image (WIM) and SCCM tells us that this uncompressed is 5,111MB (that must be a miscalculatin).
Multicast, I may be wrong, stages the image on the first device to connect in and then the following devices pull the image from there. Someone else tested this approach and it didn't work so I assume the uncompressed image is staged on the first machine and then uncompressed on itself.
Similarly if we configure an OSD advertisement to download it will fail due to lack of space for cached WIM and uncompressed files.

CAS and Primary Site.
I have 3 servers.
1- SQL with 2 instance (SCCM and CAS);
2- CAS;
3- Primary Site.
The replication between Primary site and CAS are "Link is being configured".
Is supported SQL with 2 instance? I configured port to instance, 4022 - SCCM, 4023 - CAS.

I will have another primary site. I have a problem. I configured static port in SQL. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/ms177440.aspx
In console SCCM status is "Link is being configured".
In rcmctrl.log "Publiser Z02 is not active, so not requesting site data this time".
In event viewer SQL "The service broker protocol transport cannot listen on port 4022 because the process is use by another process.".

You have multiple problems. I will list some of them (im sure you are aware of most). It may be faster to simply re-install the OS.
1-Net framework needs to be re-installed
2-iTunes (bonjour service) needs to be re-installed
3-The is an error in the CD-ROM (may need a driver or may be a failing CD player)
4-Hundreds of network problems (needs to be investigated)
5-THIS IS IMPORTANT There is a HD controller error. (may be a driver or the HD itself is failing) There are literally thousands of these.
6-Logmein should be removed or re-installed
7-Mediashout was not installed correctly and needs to be re-installed or better yet removed.
8-The HP Pohotsmart printer cant be shared with others in this configuration
There are many more.

How to pass multiple values in a report module
Hi,
Can any one tell me how we can pass multiple values in a reporting service parameter.
Reply:
Starting from SSRS 2008, passing multiple values is supported out of box. You need to enable multi value property for the parameter and on selection of multiple values, the parameter is automatically is passed as comma separated value string. Refer to the below link for more details - http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/c02370b5-aeda-47ec-a3a8-43b2ec1e6c26/

RAM Memory Addressing Priority
[Example Setup] [32-bit Windows] [Two Memory Sticks Installed] [4GB RAM Total]
We already know, that only about 3.2GB or some variation of your RAM will be mapped in the address.
*Will the system map each individual memory module equally?*
Explanation:
Does the 3.2GB of addressable memory get split between each stick, so that 1.6GB on each stick gets mapped equally, with each stick having 400MB of leftover unmapped memory?
Since only 3.2GB or so is addressable, its possible that the first 2GB will go entirely to Stick #1, and Stick #2 will only get a 1.2GB address.
The reason this concerns me, is that there is a potential for stability issues, with one stick receiving more of a workload than it's partner, and possible conflicts in Dual-Channel memory usage being unevenly split between the two modules.

Has MS (or anyone) installed/run W8 Pro on a system with many (say, 24) partitions ?
I installed W8 Pro to a (active) primary partition on a hdd with 3 primary & 9 logical partitions (MBR). It installed & ran OK.
I then attached another hdd also with 3 primary & 9 logical partitions, I booted from a PE and hid the 3 primary partitions on the second hdd. W8 would reboot almost immediately after booting. Repair failed too.
I then hid few of the logical partitions, same problem.
I then hid all the primary partitions on both the hdds except the one I wanted to install W8 to. I formatted the partition, and tried to install W8 Pro ( from a UFD ) again. After copying a few files (approx 25%) I would get a error message saying a certain file not found.
Win 7 installed on another partition of the first hdd runs fine even with both the hdds attached.
I use the grub4dos bootloader ( installed after Windows ).
Hardware : Intel 2180 + 945GCM + DDR2.
The PC is not mine so it may be difficult to do further testing.

Are you sure you have a 4650 in your laptop? According to this link: <http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-n5110?driverId=HJNJ1&osCode=W864&fileId=3081918467> the n5010 would have either a 6470 or 7450. Anyhow, uninstall the driver you have installed now, reboot, and install that one.

Hello alokkumar.
The page related to your notebook on the Dell web site can be found at http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/555/Product/inspiron-15-intel-n5010: as you can see, there are no drivers for Windows 8, so the last Windows release couldn't be supported on this PC.
Since you have a laptop PC, you must use the video drivers provided by the PC's manufacturer and not the drivers provided by the video card's manufacturer.

Remote desktop hangs on disconnect
The same XP system to XP works correctly, I can disconnect and reconnect as many times as I need. This is the expected normal behavior.
I need either a fix for the bug on disconnects with Vista, or the exact steps required to disconnect cleanly from the remote Vista session so that I can reconnect later, and log in at it's console again.

Hi,
Thank you for posting.
I suspect the issue is on the Windows Vista side, since the Windows XP computer can remote to another one with no issues.
At this time, let's try the following to narrow down the issue:
1. When disconnecting the RDP session, please use the following method as a test: Click Start and then click Log Off (do not just close the RDP window, or click Start->Disconnect). Then, connect it again and see how it works now.
2. Please perform a Clean Boot on the Windows Vista computer to check if there are some conflicts on the system.
Clean boot
=================
1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab.
In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please establish the connection again and check the issue at this time.
If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.
Please let us know if the RDP from Windows XP to Windows Vista can work on the clean boot environment. If the issue persists, please also help me gathering the MPS Report:
1. Download the MPS Report Tool from the following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/0/4/f047169c-6357-47f3-835c-2665d6426e66/MPSRPT_PFE.EXE
2. After the download is complete, double-click this "MPSRPT_PFE.EXE" file. When you are prompted "Include the MSINFO32 report?", please input Y to continue. After a while, a CAB file will be generated.
3. Open My Computer, browse to the "%systemroot%\MPSReports\PFE\CAB" folder. You can find the CAB file above. Please send the CAB file to the workspace.
Hope this helps. Thank you for your efforts.

4. Re-run client, try to reconnect to Vista, log in, it hangs at 'welcome' message
5. Close client, walk over to Vista console, log in screen is up
6. At Vista console, select user, enter password, I get error message that the system can't log in, it is processing a disconnect, connect, etc. The system hangs at this point. There is nothing I can do now except hard reset on computer.
There seems to be some serious bugs in the Vista system.

I am experiencing a similar issue.
I have a Vista 64 machine with 8GB RAM. On this, I run a Virtual Pc Win XP SP3 (they both have different IP addresses)
From a different XP SP3 machine, I can remote desktop to the XP virtual machine (and disconnect) as many times as I need to
However when I try to disconnect (or log off as you describe above) from the Vista 64, if I go back to the console, the login screen still says "Logged in remotely from <myServer>"
From here, sometimes I can log on to the console, other times I cannot. However I cannot use RDP again, it says there is already a connection in progress.
It is as though RDP is not disconnecting the session properly, and therefore I cannot reconnect.
I would like to be able to disconnect the session without "logging off" (this is standard behaviour, I believe?) so that the virtual PC can continue to run in the background.
Please let me know if there are any updates, or any more info I can provide.
Many thanks

I am experiencing similar issues with Windows 7 x64 (RTM). After disconnecting an RDP connection from Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac (Version 2.0.0 (080530)), or from a Windows XP x86 machine (Shell and Control Version 6.0.6001, RDP Version 6.1 supported), my console becomes unresponsive.
I have a dual monitor setup, and my primary display remains in a "sleep" state, while my secondary monitor remains active and I can actually see mouse movement on the secondary monitor. No matter what key combination's I attempt (CTRL+ALT+DEL, ALT+TAB, ALT+F4, Etc.), I am unable to "wake" my primary monitor to allow me to connect to my machine at the console.
I have a the CAB files requested in the posts above, however, I am unsure of where to submit the file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can connect and disconnect from the "host" without problem, unless I have run WordPerfect X3 (no problem with other members of the WP suite, such as QuattroPro) at any time since booting the host. Once WP has been run, connection will typically hang with the remote machine showing the "inverted" tab for RDT, but it will proceed no further (black screen - my normal background). I can close RDT on the remote machine and have it remain usable locally. The host machine will be completely hung, and unresponsive to anything but reset. It appears to still be running, since the disk access light flashes aperiodically in its usual fashion.
This occurs with one particular XP machine as host. It does not occur with either of 2 other XP SP3 machines with WP X3. RTD used to work flawlessly on an identical motherboard with very similar configuration and aps installed. Possibly significant is that the "failing" computer uses a dual core processor, whereas all others tested were/are single core (both AMD and Intel).
I would be most grateful for any assistance to solve this problem. I have tried alternatives to RDT (which don't suffer from the hangup), but find them much inferior to RDT for my purposes.
Thanks!

This was not mentioned:
when I log physically to the remote computer (the one which is later going to be rdp host) and stay logged, and I go to the working computer and log to the remote one via remote desktop -> everything works ok, I can only close the RD window and then reconnect again, I can go to the remote one and log on physically etc
when I do not log on physically first and I just connect via remote desktop the behaviour is like desribed above in earlier posts.
And one thing more:
I have set my desktop on the remote computer to display larger texts (200%DPI). when I log on phzsicallz first and then via RDP, the remote desktop displays larger texts and all the icons look like I was physically present on the remote desktop. When I connect straight via RDP without logging on physically first, the desktop is looking like it was unconfigured, like I never used it, no larger text and icons are in the default positions.
is it a bug or is it a feature?
thank you.

Suggested fixes are disablinga SEP specific setting and disabling Large Send Offload for your network adapter.

Solution: A way to run all your sites from one machine in Azure.
Over the past two years many customers have been frustrated by the inability to use multiple IP addresses on the azure cloud. This increases cost and is impractical for companies that host multiple sites. I recently found a way to accommodate such a request which has the potential to reduce your overall operating costs. Since most people have sites with marginal amounts of traffic, it makes more sense to host those on a pair of central servers. If you have multipls sites azure can be difficult, until now. With a few small changes to your topology SSL for multiple sites IS possible.
If you are interested in purchasing/licensing my solution please contact me (Andrew) at info@branches.net with your name and contact number.
I realize that this might be thought of as advertising but I really want azure to succeed. This issue has bugged me to no end and I hope that finally having a fix will help more people move to the platform until Microsoft is able to put this together for themselves.
Rates start at $100/Endpoint and $0.15/GB
You can have as many endpoints as you need mapped to your servers and we can get this up and running pretty quickly. What is the cost to you of managing multiple servers? Here are some examples of how this might be the tool you need to justify moving to Azure.
Scenario A (small business)
10 Small VMs (2/website) @ $90/month each = $900/month
With Branches Azure Mapping Tools
2 Medium VMs for all your sites @ $180/month each = $360/month
Map one site directly to these server in azure.
4 Branches Endpoints, as low as $400/month
Savings: $140/month or $1,680/annually
Scenario B (web hosting company)
50 Small VMs (1/website) @ $90/month each = $4500/month
Maintenance/upgrade time @ 4h/server = 200h labour (full time job)
With Branches Azure Mapping Tools
2 Extra-Large VMs for all your sites @ $720/month each = $720/month
Minimal labour for 2 servers (instead of 200h/month)
50 Branches Endpoints, $4,000/month
Scenario C (medium to large business)
10 Medium VMs (2/site) @ $180/month each = $1,800/month
With Branches Azure Mapping Tools
2 Large VMs for all your sites @ $360/month each = $720/month
4 Branches Endpoints, as low as $400/month
Savings: $680/month or $8,160/annually

Can a .NET application using SQLServerCe Database be Portable?
I have created an app that utilizes a SQLServerCE database. I can run the application on the development PC, however, when I run it on a different PC, I get an error. I DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL SQLServerCE to the target PC if I don't have to nor do I want to manually register the dll. Is there a way to embed this in the application?
Thanks,

Did you try installing it from a command window that was opened by Run as administrator?

Good News on Media Center Reinstall!
I asked this question back in December and no one could give me a straight answer because I guess no one actually knew for sure, but I think I can set the record straight in case anyone else is wondering...If you took advantage of the Media Center freebie that accompanied the introductory sale of Win 8 Pro for $39.99, you know that you got a separate key from Microsoft for Media Center along with instructions to activate on or before Jan 31, 2013, else the key would not work past the expiration of the introductory program. Many folks, including me, were concerned that this meant that in the event we had to do a complete reinstall of Win8 (format c:\, etc.) that our keys for Media Center would no longer work past that date and that we'd have to either get another key from Microsoft or buy it for $9.99.
Well, although I was unhappily forced to do the nuke reset Win8 reinstall option two days ago (that's a whole other can of worms), I can happily report that using my original key for Media Center through the Control Panel "Add Features to Windows 8" applet worked perfectly the first time with my original Microsoft MC key. So it appears that only in the event that someone failed to use his introductory-sale keys on or before Jan 31, 2013 that they would simply not have worked past the date of the expiration of the sale program. This just makes sense, of course, but it's always nice to know for sure...;)
