How secure is the Win8 graphical login?

I was curious if there is info on how secure the new graphical finger-swipe Win8 login is. Is the info stored in some easily cracked format? Should we have 8 or more swipes/swirls/taps? We know that passwords are inherently insecure, should we be telling people to never use login passwords again?

The Building Win8 blog had a nice post about how many hundreds of trillions of possible combinations it can have ( blog ) but also says things like "To be clear, picture password is provided as a login mechanism in addition to your text password, not as a replacement for it" so perhaps the whole thing is moot and nobody will care about trying to crack picture passwords.

Still, I wonder how well the word is getting out that you still need a stong password in addition to your swoops and lines

CDN Create Fails - Internal Server Error

I get the following error (see attached pic) whenever I try to create a CDN endpoint in US EAST affinity group.

Anyone know how to resolve it ?

Qin,

Those are the exact steps (in your link) I followed to create, first the storage account, then the CDN endpoint (in the old portal).

I tried multiple times, now I have 4 storage accounts with disabled CDN endpoints. Also when CDN create fails with Internal Server Error, Im not able to delete the associated storage account.

Also, the problem seems to exist only if the storage is located in "EAST US". I tried creating one on "SOUTH US" which works fine.

It is still throwing the same Internal Server Error creating CDN endpoint on a storage account hosted in US EAST. I've tried several times in all the three Azure Subscriptions I have.

And looks like there is no support for this issue at http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/support/contact unless I pay! Well Im already paying for the service that is broken.

Hi Amit,

I faced the same choice a couple of years back(SP 2007)

Here is what I did, I obviously chose SharePoint as a base. From here I learned how to setup all other technologies and the entire Microsoft stack to be honest. I am still 100% fully SharePoint but I have semi knowledge in the other fields as well.

Build your knowledge around SharePoint, meaning, learn how to use the integrating components, this includes BI, to the extent where you hand over to the BI specialists, trust me, it is a lot.

Such additions to the config.xml file can be made using the following command at a command prompt:

Cannot load disk configuration from disk management.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V CSV cluster with 4 nodes. I have a EMC VNX SAN and I publish some LUNs to the Hyper-V cluster.
Suddenly one day I cannot load the disk configuration when I click on Disk Management. All CSVs are online and everyting are working but I can't bring a new published LUN online because I can't load the disks in disk management.
Any suggestions.

We got a new firmware applied to our SAN but I don't know if this could be the problem. I'm able to see the disks/volumes in c:\clusterstorage and with diskpart.

Hello,

We're looking at Accessibility in the FIM portal (which is a pretty big deal for us). Reading the VPATs for FIM R2 it states:

k) A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes - Supported

This suggests that FIM would support a text only mode for the portal. Can anyone tell me how to access this mode? We need to test the portal with some assistive technologies (JAWS)

Agents cannot connect to Management server

Hi All,

I have a strange issue with SCOm 2012 SP1.

After the upgrade with SP1 everything worked fine, but suddenly the second MGMT Server has the health Status greyed out and all Clients were a Agent is installed cannot connect to any of the Management Servers.

It seems to be two different Problems. Well, this was more or less a test Installation but it would be intersting to know whats happened there. In the worst case when we decide to uninstall both machines, what is there important to know specially with the SCOM Containers in AD created on the inital Installation?

Hopefully it's not too dumb of a question, but did you check the Pending Management section in the Administration tab?

I haven't run the upgrade myself, but after each of the UR#'s, all of the agents needed to be upgraded via that.

Hi Again,

it seems that the SCOM RMS Server is only communicating with the database and nothing else. All Agents are not able to connect to the RMS. Some old alerts are visible in the console and no new created one. I have also tried to uninstall a Agent on a remote System with the console, thats working..

Any idea where I can start to fix this issue?

Well, it was a test System and we can rweinstall it from the beginning. But I am not sure how I can remove the SCOM created Containers in AD.

I had the exact same problem but on SCOM 2012 without SP1.

I was about to post a reply in this topic stating all the things I've done, then I noticed someone had put all SCOM servers into maintenance mode ... conclusion : event 20000 for ALL managed servers ... Removed maintenance mode, tadaaaa.

As this is not your issue, you can also check the OperationsManager shell for pending agents. Sometimes, some of them do not appear on the GUI and are still "orphan" in your system, which can cause issues.

PS> Get-SCOMPendingManagement

and then Approve-SCOMPendingManagement or Deny-SCOMPendingManagement

Hi,

The Gray state of the Management server can be caused due to multiple reasons. Is the Healthservice running and listening on TCP port 5723 on the Management server?

Please check the OperationsManager event log on the Management server to see if there are System workflow failures, Typically Event 1102 or 1103.

Check for RunAs account failures. There are events in the range of 7023-7026 logged when the System center Management service loads a new configuration. If there are RunAs account failures, you may see 7005 events with the failure information in the event log.

What Active Directory container are you pointing to? Is it the one created by AD integration or the one created by the AD Management pack?

If it is the AD integration, you can use the MOMAdAdmin tool to delete the containers created for the Management group in AD.

If it is the OpsMgrLatency container created by the AD MP, You can safely delete this container from AD.

File History Doesn't Do Anything

I got a 3TB Seagate GoFlex Drive so I could back up my files (which are on my C: drive and on 2 external drives)

I have created a new library just for the 2 external drives.

When I run File History, the window says it's doing the copies for the first time and stops after about 10 minutes.

None of my files are backed up, but there are a few folders created on the GoFlex drive that seem to be for File History.

The file history event viewer has a number of warnings about reparse points, but the final warning seems like the one rthat makes the file history stop:

Unusual condition was encountered during scanning user libraries for changes and performing backup of modified files for configuration

C:\Users\John Wyatt\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

What's going wrong and how can I fix it?

Broken by design? File history reset all timestamps …

This is the first time I need to recover files from my file history backup. I noticed that the folders are all having the current timestamp, instead of the original timestamp. I expected it to be the same. In fact, I work a lot with those timestamps and it is very confusing having all the folders the timestamp as of now!

Why is that?

I think it is by design. Windows File History will save copies of files every hour by default.

You misunderstand my question:

An example: I created a folder and some files in 2010-03-21. I set up file history to back those files up. Last week my hard drive crashed and I did a recovery from file history. Now every folder and every file has the creation date 2013-02-23.

That is not what I would expect. I created those folders and files in 2010-03-21 and because a backup is a one-to-one copy, it should also take the creation dates into account, instead of changing them!

I assume this is by default, but I believe this is just wrong.

(I say that for a reason, because you regularly mark absolutely useless replies as answers. Sometimes a problem is hard to solve, or not ata ll, and therefor stays without answer. The date is showing when the file history back thoes files up, not when the files are created.

An example, you created a folder with somes files in 2010-3-21. But the file history was running on 2013-2-23. Then 2013-2-23 would be the first copy of this folder. If you changes some contents in this folder, the second copy will be saved with the datewhen the file history runs next time.

Hello,

From the figure you posted above it seems that you didn't use SUM to aggregate the values in intersecting cells. Example under Local column only single (> 0) value is there, i.e. 175 but total row shows the sum as 201.

How did you reference the numeric field in the cell?

Is it like

=Fields!NumericValue.Vaue

OR

=SUM(Fields!NumericValue.Value)

It you didn't use SUM function then do use it and I hope this will resolve your issue.

If this doesn't solve your issue then please share the expressions you used in group cells and total cells.

Windows Explorer Inconsistent Behavior

Can anyone explain to me how Windows Explorer works, and if it can be controlled?

I take a lot of photos, which I save into various folders. I rename them using my own particular protocol.

Sometimes when I rename photos, they jump to the "proper" alphabetical location. To clarify: All photos in a folder are named IMGxxx, each with a different number. If I re-name a photo "Alfred" it jumps above all <st1:stockticker>IMG</st1:stockticker> photos. If I re-name it "Kelly" it jumps to the end of all <st1:stockticker>IMG</st1:stockticker> photos, etc. etc. Other times the re-named photos stay where they are, without regard to alphabetical order. Whichever behavior happens is consistent within a folder, AT THAT TIME.

I then load the photos, five at a time, starting with the first photos in the folder, into Photo Shop for any necessary adjustment. I save them using CTRL S (so they are saved into the same folder); as well as saving them a second time into another folder.

Sometimes the modified photos are still at the top of the folder; other times they have moved to the end.

Who can explain this and whether it can be controlled?

2. Right-click an empty space, point to Sort by, and then click a property (such as Tags).

Unable to read brackets '(' ')' from the excel sheet using Oledb provider

I am trying to read an excel sheet using Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 sheet .

In the excel sheet we have one field which in telephone number format i.e (888) 801-8888 .Now when we read the excel sheet we are getting tel no in the format 888 801-8888.Also we have defined all the necessary parameters in the connection string to read value as text.

I developed this system in my work in school libraries; I was the school librarian both in primary school and high school, and spent a lot of time cataloguing books, lending them out, returrning them to the right shelves, looking for requested books in the shelves, counting all books in the library, highlighting and lending out recommended school syllabus books, administrating the libraries and maintaining library discipline with diplomacy and rewarding my library users for perfect silence and peace for all library users with more popular books and tips, who all passed their exams with flying colours.

I am also entrusted with very many documents, videos, and pictures by my family, relatives and friends because I respect their property like I respect them, and don't put their pictures and videos up in the internet for anybody to look at or steal or kill. It's not my policy to go against our house rules and to jeopadise their lives and privacies with guests, dangerous violent websites, dangreous violent Trojans, email addresses, internet programmes thieves, patent thieves, plagiarists, forgers, internet stalkers, online stalkers, offline stalkers, psychic stalkers, psychopathic stalkers and the internet wanted criminals register of ignorant criminals.

I label data names alphabetically and democratically.

I label my data alphabetically; my documents, my videos, my music and my pictures alphabetically and numerically using the elementary primary school alphabetic and numeric system.

That's my programmer language to finish.

Windows 8 is locking its screen possibly when when resuming from screen saver

Twice in the last 8 hours when resuming from screen saver, my screen was locked but I don't have "Resume on logon" selected as a screen saver option. This happened once before within the last couple weeks.

Have you enabled sleep mode? Please disable sleep mode completely in Power Plan for a test.

The computer definitely isn't in sleep mode. It only happened several times. I am just curious why. It makes me wonder if someone is remotely connected.

If you suspect someone remote your computer, please set "Don't allow connections to this computer" from System Properties under Remote Desktop.

I don't mean it that way. I am the only user able to access remotely. But someone may have gotten a program in to allow access. This hasn't happened again.
