"Other Credentials" button on lock screen prevents me to switch user

Hi, All!

That is a laptop running Windows 7 x64 Pro, member of Microsoft Domain Network (Srv2008). Once a user logged in - that is no "Switch User" button appears after logoff or when screen is just locked. Instead of it I see button says:"Other Credentials", click on it provides me an option to log in back with the last logged account, use a finger scanner for authentication (Lenovo Laptops has this feature) or simply "Cancel"

I will appreciate any advice or solution regarding the following issue, nothing in Domain Network should not prevent Administrator account from login and in this case I able to procceed only after system restart.

Thank's

How do I reduce font size in a Link Bar?

I inserted a Link Bar and it works fine.  I picked a style I like, and it applies OK.  But when I right-click on the Link Bar and select Font, no changes apply.  The Link Bar seems to be frozen in Arial medium.  Fonts change fine everywhere else in the webpage.

Reply:

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you trying to change the font in the top navigation links? Do you mean the link in the web part title?

You'll need to use CSS to change the fonts on a SharePoint page. You can do that in the following ways:

  1. To change just one web part on one page add a content editor web part that contains or links to your CSS. Hide the web part so it doesn't show in the UI.
  2. Change the CSS across the site using SharePoint Designer or Visual Studio.

If this is not what you are asking, please clarify.

Multiforest Sync to Windows Azure Active Directory.

Hi All

I know that many integrator is in the same situation where only MCS can install the multiforest syncronization to Office365. (please corrent me if i'm wrong). This is not rocket or space sciense and i assume that many integrator has done even bigger IDM implementation using FIM but maybe not against Office365 or even Windows Azure Active Directory.

We are currently starting project to build multiforest sync to Azure Active Directory to be used in custom applications - and now i'm keen to know if someone else has done this earlier and can share tips and tricks and possible guides.

We will have 3 forest in differrent location and we are going to create new site to Azure and then using Site to Site VPN connect those and create/build the FIM environment also to Azure.

Based on the solution also interested to know if someone has configured FIM to use Azure SQL service or is that even possible. From business perspective we need to use two SQL server for high availability and fault tolerance but would like to hear if someone has configured Azure IaaS based FIM server to use Azure SQL server instead of dedicated virtuall machines.

Thanks.

Petri

Thanks.

I am not of aware of anyone having used the Azure SQL Service to host the FIM database. I have heard of someone deploying FIM on a VM in Azure with SQL hosted as a VM.

At the Redmond Identity Summit last week it was discussed that you might be able to use your contacts as a partner to ask MSFT for the Office 365 connector.

We do have a product called CloudAnywhere that works in multi forest and multi tenant environnement.

We recently deployed it on a customer site who has 22000 users, 2 AD forest and 15 FQDN domains splitted in 2 Office 365 tenants.

We replaced the existing solution (dirsync+ADFS) which could not work in their environnement because of the limitations you explain.

CloudAnywhere synchronizes users, groups (security, dl, dl with security), contacts, passwords and now galsync. It also assigns the licences of your choice base on AD group membership.

CloudAnywhere works standalone (password sync is performed without schema extension, without bi directionnal trustrelationships, etc...) or can work on top of FIM 2010 to provision just the cloud targets that FIM 2010 cannot handle.

And just forgot to mention,

we do have a connector for Azure Active Directory.

However, it's quite limited:

- the Azure Active Directory Graph apis does not allow to write contacts.

- Password changes currently forces the flag "User must change password at next logon". For transparent password changes, we must still use the powershell commands.

So per

this should work (and we have it working on 2008 R2.

Is this a known issue or documented anywhere.

When a user sends a email with an attachment size of 9MB to 1500 users, we loose the space of 13GB from our exchange storage. Is there a way when a user attaches an attachment size beyond 512kb, any application that can zip the file automatically in the e-mail whcich can be plugged in to the outlook. Speaking of terms of use, one of my concerns about a MS-hosted "lounge" forum was that having a looser environment in terms of personal opinion and language might butt up against the requirements of MVPs that we remain professional in demeanor while interracting with the community.  The same concern goes for those who are nominated in the future and have activity here scrutinized as part of the vetting process.

As mentioned in the previous threads leading up to here, there was a privately hosted forum a while back for the same purpose that wound up encouraging members to, well, speak their mind freely.  This allowance was the most effective means to venting frustrations or stress.  I can't help but feel that some us will not be able to be so free here, thus having us lose out on what may be the best attribute of a lounge atmosphere.

Still, I fully welcome such a forum even if it would not meet all of my expectations.  The need and desire for it seems quite strong.  If this discussion had popped up in some other thread like C# General I'm sure the regulars there would have come to the same conclusion.

Hardly stupid questions.

  1. Maybe an hour or so a day on average - some days I don't at all.  I find it a nice break during work when things get intense to switch gears by browsing the forum.  I've often wondered if Cor ever spends a day away though ;)  My numbers tell the story though - there are far more active regulars than me.
  2. I was up to 3 but now I mainly stick to VB General.
  3. No quick answer here.  For simple questions I prefer to answer as quickly as possible while still providing some context and food for thought.  Some people prefer the one-liners but I think that usually comes off as rude.  For tougher questions or ones I don't immediately know the answer to I will often spend the time to open a new project and try out some code or write a few simple classes to illustrate a point.  As for time - I'd be willing to bet that anyone who codes for a living can write code at blinding speed so long as they are coding something familiar.  As for testing...  not always.  And it really hurts when you make stupid mistakes because of it.  that makes me be more dilligent, and then after a wile I get complacent until another stupid error occurs.  That's where I currently am in the cycle *fingers crossed*
  4. I doubt there are more than a few people who could given the breadth of knowledge required.  It depends on the forum though.  Some are limited very tightly to one specific technology, so those woudl more likey have someone who "knew it all".  The VB forums are like the bottom of the hill where just about any question can settle into given enough lack of forethought or care.  The closest person I know here to spanning large swaths of knowledge is Hans Passant (nobugz).  I remember a few years back he would occasionally breeze through a bunch of forums including the VB forums and nearly the entire first two pages would be answered by him within an hour.  And then he would go on to the next forum not to be seen for a month or two.

Good points. You can edit your posts where you say anything you regret and then delete it. No one will know what you wrote. Not even mods. You should feel free to vent your frustrations, especially if it doesn't start any arguments or hurt anyone's feelings.

Those are good questions, and ones I can give my Forum experience to.

1. depends. I used to spend about an average of 6-8 hours a day. Now its probably an hour or two on a daily basis. A big reason for the decrease in time is as I've learned more, I can solve problems quicker.

2. 5 Forums

3. depends. Some questions I can put together some code on the specific problem in a few minutes; some take longer. Then there may be follow up questions or problems, usually because of an incomplete or unclear question. I always test my code before posting (well, unless I'm at a computer without VS, but I can ocassionally freehand the code sufficiently to get the point across). I find that approach takes less time than to post buggy code and have to go back and edit.

4. all ??? Maybe more like 5%. There is so much in .NET, it's virtually impossible to have that breadth of knowledge, even in a focused Forum such as Chart control.

Are you up to the task? If you have a passion for this, the simple answer is most likely. One of the best ways I learn is by trying to answer a lot of questions. Some I have to research a new concept, and that always gives me a little more knowledge. Then I look at other solutions and see where I can improve my code, or how to do something better.

  1. To much
  2. 4 but among those two in in the top of the most populair ones on MSDN, I don't like not so active forums (those have no community)
  3. To much; no I'm not always testing my code simply because it is often about data or hardware which I've not available. Samples which I put on our website I always test. If I show a console sample, I've always tested it.
  4. I'm for sure not able to answer all questions, especially not if it is not about the code itself but about for instance hardware resources which I don't have or things I simpley never liked for instance mathematical representations of images. But I see the forums as a fauntain of new things which pass my horizon, so often I do also new things simply to taught myself in that. However, I know from many questions, the places where to get an answer. :-) and if I see that a question is longer no answered in a forum, or I simply know they never will be answered in a certain forum, I give that place.

1. this just depends if i am busy with some projects or not. If i am not so busy i keep checking my forums often or if need some distraction form my acual coding.

2. I do monitor 8 forums but only because i am also active in the german forums as well

3. This just depends on the quality of the question. If it is an easy one i don`t spend much time. If i remember that the question has been asked short time back and has been answered, i usually search for this thread and just post a link. I try to always test my code if it is possible. If i post by using my phone then i won`t.

SSIS Improve simple load performance

Hi

I just published a new post on SQL Server Central

6 Million rows in 60 seconds using standard laptop and I was wondering if there are any other ways to speed it up?

I want to use one physical disk and source as text file (later on I will try additional USB drives and convert source to RAW File)

Here is my set up:
Recovery Model: Simple
Initial DB Size: 1000MB (above what I need)
Connections: Flat File (fast parse property had little effect) + OLE DB (I tried SQL Server Destination but had minor improvement)
Buffers: Tried various settings but it seems in this case it doesn't have much affect.

Is there anything else I can try?
Man thanks
Emil

Hi,

Remove any constraint, trigger and index on your destination table before the data load.

Once the data is loaded, you can recreate them.

What's the destination table like?
Any indexes? Already data present?

You could also set the network package size of the OLE DB connection to the maximum of 32K (Top 10 SQL Server Integration Services Best Practices), but I doubt if that will give any significant results.

Which buffer sizes did you try? Also change the DefaultBufferSize if you change the DefaultBufferMaxRows.

Hi

Thanks for the links. My load is a test of how fast the load can be done (using heap table and TPC-H Data), which I will than use to record additional videos for our 'SSIS Performance Tuning' series and upload to our Katie And Emil YouTube Channel

First test was 4 minutes (With deliberate bad db settings), Test no.7 is 43 seconds and still hope there might be some settings that can help... I'll try partitioning later on..it generally shouldn't have much impact on one physical disk however this is 2 platters / 4 heads so I'm hoping the drive will take advantage of that and maybe it will save several secs.

Any other suggestions (for one physical disk, later on I'll try USB per drive/external drive)?

Many thanks in advance

Emil

Thanks for the link... it is very useful.

It seems flag might not work in my case as heap table with tablock is minimal logging... the link might actually answer my next idea... which was to use page compression on heap table but it seems I might get worse performance (I'll try it anyway).

Thanks

Personally, I think 6 million rows in 43 minutes is still pretty amazing.

Another option that you can test out is to do it entirely in .NET using the SQLBulkCopy class. I've read this can have some astonishing speeds.
Also try out bcp and see if it can outrun SSIS.

I might try .net sqlbulkcopy... I haven't hear about it...I've tried bulk insert and bcp and there are ok but to get better performance I would probably still have to fiddle with settings so i'll stick with SSIS (but I'll try .net out of curiosity)

Latest update

I installed SQL 2012 Enterprise (I had BI before) and it seems it had affect on performance; maybe some BI limitations or maybe it is just positions differently on a disk...

I got (after multiple ran) 36s!

I tried page compression and I got 49s but then I thought row compression might be worth trying and now I get 33s! which 181k rows per seconds.

I'll try playing with partitions next and see if 2 platers/4 heads will make a difference..

A RAW file should in theory read faster than a flat file.

Try using the Balanced Data Distributor to parallellize the streams:

Just an update I got 28s after doing windows file compression on text file and removing row compression from table (is faster on standard txt file but slower on compressed text files).

I wanted to try Balanced Data Distributor but it doesn't work with SSIS 2012.

I also tried RAW file and I was quite surprised to notice that raw file size is 0.99GB comparing to txt file 730MB and I get 28s which is the same as compressed text file and compressed raw file is 27s.

I got below 30s over 200k rows per seconds so I'm happy with this result. Over the next several days I'll try USB external drives / pen drive and see if I can get below 20s. Read is 16s so I don't I can do anything about it unless I split the file, which I may try later on....

Thanks for your time and suggestions!

With an SSD disk you probably will get even faster results. Or you can try a fast USB 3.0, this is also flash memory so about the same speed.

I am curious what is the speed of the load on a freshly booted machine?

The speed you show (my understanding) is so fast due to the memory buffers still being filled with the original data loaded at the 1st run.

Hi Arthur,

You are right I am relying on cached data which is much easier to compare results with various settings.

I'm going to restart my machine and run it.

How long do you think it will take?

Much longer

Safe guess? ;)

It took 32.1s (187k rows per seconds).

Which is an interesting result in itself.

Interesting, I expected the load to last longer the 1st time.

I am curious, what are the specs of your laptop?

Things is I am thinking - when you are on a local connection you use shared memory to shove data into SQL Server so basically it equals to the time needed to read the data from disk (the slowest part).

It's not one column with 1 bit ;) Text file is over 0.7GB and table is over 0.8GB

I'm using TPC-H Data generated from DBGEN with 1GB files (LineItem that I'm using is over 0.7 GB

You could also set the network package size of the OLE DB connection to the maximum of 32K (Top 10 SQL Server Integration Services Best Practices), but I doubt if that will give any significant results.

Just wondering... does this property has any result for local databases or does it only work for remote database?

I think only for remote databases.
If SSIS runs on the same server as the destination, I think shared memory is used, so the TCP/IP layer isn't used.

edit: so why did I suggested it in the first place? Seems I wasn't awake at the time :)

Thx Koen... not criticizing, just wondering. Was testing this a while ago on my home network with my pc and a laptop and couldn't get big differences. Only a couple of seconds. Too little to make it a blog item :-(

The Packet Size actually makes several seconds difference with my test. I thought it wouldn't for local set up but it does so from my point of view I will most likely try to set connection strings with this property set to 32k. I think it can only help and I currently don't see any drawbacks.

windows 8 to server 2008 tial and back

Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased asus laptop which came with pre-installed windows 8. I wanted to install windows server 2008r2 trial copy for study purpose. After trial period is over how can I get my windows 8 back. what are my options. please help

Hello,

You should be able to use this command this is assuming X: is your external device or \\server\dir\ for network path.

wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:X: -include:C: -vssFull -quiet -AllCritical

Let it run make sure there are no errors then you are good to restore it later.

You probably have the option to create recovery disk from asus. Create these dvd's and you will be able to restore the laptop to default.

The second option is you don't delete the recovery partition on the disk. Asus should be able to recover the laptop to default by pressing for example f8 on startup.

I recommend option 1

Reply:
Recovery partition is too small for a bare metal backup, so I would not encourage that. As far as Asus software I won't take a chance with something when you know windows backup does exactly what you need.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 i9100 not Recognized by Windows 8 Pro x64

A few weeks ago I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Windows 8 Pro x64 and ever since I have not been bale to get  the PC to recognize the device.

I've downloaded the latest version of Samsung KIES to no avail. downloaded other Samsung mobile related drivers to no avail.  Reformatted my C: drive and did a fresh install of Windows 8 and still can't get the bloody PC to recognize my phone.  The only positive thing I can do is charge the battery.

Can anyone out there offer up some help?

With the new OS releasing, there would be a lot of compatibility issues. I think you need to wait for new Samsung KIES software for Windows 8.

I am glad to see your question before I also reformatted my drive as well......

Same thought  :)

I gues I have to wait as well for the new Kies version windows8 compattible.

I found someone who got it working, and his fix fixed it for me. (Kies not seeing my Samsung Galaxy S III phone)  I downloaded the latest Kies as well..

From his post:

People on most forums are waiting patiently for Samsung to rectify the issue - but I came across a very simple solution in the meantime which works wonders.

  • After installing Kies - find the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Kies [If you're using 64bit] or C:\Program Files\Samsung\Kies [for 32bit]
  • Open the file named Kies.exe.config in a text editor (Notepad will do)
  • Find the line the bottom which says: <supportedRuntime version="v4.0" />
  • Delete that line, save the file, then open Kies.

I wouldn't know, never tried one and contracts are long... :(

What would be good is for Samsung to write a better Kies -- it never
worked as good as it should, even when it does work.  I don't know if
that's a problem with Android, or just Kies, but it should work
better!

customsettings.ini not working

Hello

I am very new using MDT/WDS, but I cannot get any settings within the cusomtsettings.ini to work. It is as if customsettings.ini is blank.

It is the in the \control folder. I have updated the Deployment share. Found a script called wdscongsettingstest and when I run it, I receive the following error:

FAILURE (Err): 429: CreateObject(Microsoft.BDD.Utility) - ActiveX component can't create object

I registered Microsoft.BDD.Utility.dll and still receive the same error, so I do not if this bogus or actually an error that could be casuing the customsettings.ini to fail.

Here's a copy of my customsettings.ini

junk mail

How can I get rid of my junk and scam mail and recieve only mail from people on my contat list?

Reply:

You need to speak to your Exchange admin and ask him to setup some sort of filtering and maybe deploy an Edge server (depending on your env).

Other options are to point your MX records to a hosted AS/AV provider like message labs/symantec cloud and let them filter out the junk.

Seems like Outlook/Cloudmark is doing what it's meant to be and you just want to prevent if from even entering the mbx.

Hello,

Just a reality update;
This has supposedly been fixed in several versions, but keep poping up as an issue. I would deactive the function on an endpoint where App-V is used.

Can not open powerpivot excel sheet for editing

Hi;

I am facing a strange problem in project server /sharepoint environment.

I have been publishing powerpivot reports on project server environment (in powerpivot gallery) and people have been using it without any issues.  The problem is that If I want to change any of the reports, I can not open these files in edit mode.  While clicking on 'open in excel' it opens the files in read only mode (for me) - from the permissions perspective, I am part of the administrative group as well as Project Manager group.

Other people in Project manager group can open these files in edit mode, but I can't.

any ideas?

Az.

Reply:

Funny - I found the solution as well... don't know the logic behind it... but...

Firstly - I noticed I could have the edit functionality If I was using another machine... so it was something related to my machine / browser.

So I went to security settings in the browser and ntoiced the sharepoint site was added as trusted site.  I just removed it from there on a hunch - and then tried it... and voila... now I can open the file in edit mode.

Cheers

Az.
