"Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart"

"Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart"

I have windows 8 wich is upgraded from windows 7.

The windows is 64 bit.

I must say that before my pc got restarted today I had few days now the screen is flickering from time to time.

The internet explorer sometimes on websites get crash or restarted automatic and back to the same site it was on.

My video card when im playing battlefield bad company 2 after 10-30 minutes get working very hard and make some noise. Im not sure if the video card get too hot but the problems happened when I wasn't playing.

I wasn't near the pc when he restarted just came and saw that windows went up and whne I went in I saw this error message.

My video card is NVidia gtx 880

And I have 6gb memory ram.

I used both memtest and the windows memory tool when I had windows 7 about a week ago and it didn't find any memory problems.

Im not sure where the problem is if the memories or the video card or maybe something else. But the problems aren't from today I had some problems also on windows 7.

I just uploaded the only file I have in the window\minidump directory. Rar it and uploaded to my skydrive: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=3B8A7D9F66FF985B!204&authkey=!ANStKk4PzJtW-Vg

Maybe someone can take a look on it and find where and what is the problem ?

Thanks.

I may upgrade to a higher version O/S from a lower version. Like upgrade
from Win 7 Home to Ultimate. But upgrading from 7 to 8 could cause
problems. I have encountered such problems in the past, when doing what
you have done.

So, I always delete the partitions on the HDD, boot of the DVD (you can
do this boot of the upgrade DVD) and install the O/S from scratch and
not upgrade over the top of Win 7.

I see . I got in the email the windows 8 dvd im not sure if it's the full windows 8 or just the dvd with the upgrade.

But what you are saying is to delete the partition of the o/s on c:\ and then make a new clean installation from the dvd of windows 8 right ?

The question is if there any chance that I have a damaged hardware ? And how can I make sure if there ir there isn't ? I thought this file should give me a clue if I have a physical damaged hardware or not.

I know that's what I did was boot off the Win 7 Ultimate upgrade DVD
when I deleted Win 7 off the HDD by deleting the partition. I know you
can boot off the Win 8 DVD pro version and do a clean install. The way
you would tell if your version of the O/S install dvd can boot is go to
the BIOS and switch the boot order. Then stick the dvd in the trey and
boot. You can always kill it before you proceed. But I would venture to
guess that you can boot off the dvd upgrade version and install the full
version of the O/S.

I doubt that you have a hardware problem. It's more like an O/S problem.
Have you tried doing an O/S repair? Also to fix the problem with the
existing O/S, you can try to upgrade over the top with the O/S upgrade
dvd to see if that fixes your problem. I would try that first before
doing a delete the partition and doing a clean install.

I have seen this problem many times over several years, it is usually  caused by nothing more than dirt accumulated inside the PC. You will see lots of dust and debris around fan vents when a PC needs cleaning. Have your PC thoroughly cleaned first then try  again. But make certain to check cooling fans around the video card and CPU area. It is there that rapid heating can cause overheat problems, and so cause your PC to reboot or just hang up.

It may not be a software problem. So it is a good plan to check it out first.

Do you think the problem is only the driver of the video card or could it be something physical with the video card ?

Networking issue.

I have a PC with no other issues except this one. My networking is fine. I can connect with no issues at all. As long as I open networking and enter the things below marked with an "*". My PC will not set itself up, even though everything is configured in the router and modem. My wife's PC does that just fine. I tell my PC to troubleshoot the problem and it doesn't know what it is. This has been going on for a long time. For the longest time IPConfig told me "Invalid" something or another. Releasing and renewing don't do any good. All the networking sees by itself is my Windstream modem. I hope I've given you enough to go on. I'm also wondering if I don't have some grunged settings in my Registry. So anyway- HELP!

I have noticed this

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

This settings should definitely be "Yes".

Go to your Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and open you network card properties.

Go to TCP/IPv4 properties and check that everything on General tab and on Alternate configuration tab is set for "Obtain ... automatically" and "Automatic".

If that fails you may try to edit setting in the registry

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\{47D6FC76-72D2-4D89-AD27-2A38AFEA0B5D}\Parameters\Tcpip]
"EnableDHCP"=dword:00000001

That long number "{47D6FC76-72D2-4D89-AD27-2A38AFEA0B5D}" is called GUID and will be different in your computer. It refers to your network card and if you have more than one card, you should select the right one.

The value

"EnableDHCP"=dword:00000001

is equivalent to what you see in ipconfig:

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

Thanks for your reply. I performed both of these. I found 4 such entries in the same place in the Registry. Three of them had a reference to TCI/P, and all three were set to yes. One of them had my IP setup in it. So I deleted the other three to rule out a conflict. Still can't connect, so I put the info back in TCP/IPv4 to connect.

Both version use the same core and files. The Pro only some some additional features. Stay at the Pro and enjoy the new features:

OCS 2007 R2 client communication

Hi all,

Just setup a temporary OCS 2007 server strictly for IM.  The Front End server is up and operational.  I'm able to login to a couple of clients but the presence and Contact info are unavailable.  It shows my status as green available but the other three people logged in are not showing/searchable.  It's on a single domain, single FE/DB server.  I shut off windows firewall thinking that may be it but no luck.  I am getting the error in the client" Cannot retrieve your Outlook calendar information"  Communicator will automatically continue to retry.  Any suggestions on ports to check or any specific logs?

Thanks!

I had Office 2010 installed on my computer, then installed Office 2013. I did not have an option to overwrite Office 2010 so now I have both versions on my computer. Is there a reason for this, or is there a reason I should have both on the same computer?

Outlook 2013 Signature change removes email text

Hello world!

I have noticed the following issue with Outlook 2013 and was curious as to if anyone else has the same issue.

I have two signatures in Outlook: One full signature, one short for replies. (no one likes your lengthy signature in replies!)

When composing an email, I will change the signature. In doing so, the signature is changed, but some/all of the text of the email are removed entirely. I can CTRL+Z and get the text back, but then have to manually fix the signature.

Not a huge issue, but annoying none the less. Anyone else notice this? My signature is all text. No links, pics, or special characters.

Running Outlook 2013 - 32bit; Win 7 - 64bit

Reply:
This is because you are typing in the signature field. Add two dashes (--) as the first line of your signature so you can see where the signature begins.

How can we check Server if GPO has been installed on client PC ?

Reply:

Hi m_1607,

I am not exactly sure that I have understood your question but you can open a command prompt on the client machine and run gpresult.exe (for Win XP) or a gpresult.exe /r (for Win 7) to see which GPO applies to the client computer and the logged on user.

gpresult will also tell you from which server the GPO was applied from.

Hope that helps,

You can run such a thing from a domain controller. Open the MMC for Users and Computers, go to the computer account, right-mouse click all Tasks and Resultant Set of Policy (logging). For this the client PC must be online.

Run a gpresult.exe /r from your client and post the result.

Run also a dir \\putyourdomaincontrollernamehere\netlogon from your client to see if your client has network access to your DCs. Also verify that your client PC is using one of your AD DNS servers. And another test: create a new user account in AD and log on with this account to your client PC. Does this work? If not please re-join your client PC to AD.

Unable to publish the topology (W2012 environment)

Just like to add comment in case someone hits to the same wall.

I have user LyncAdmin which is member of CSAdministrator and local administrative group in the Lync 2013 server (LyncServer1). First standard edition server preparation are completed etc.. great.

Time to publish the first topology: *bang!* #1

Error: Caller does not have the required permission to create directory \\LyncServer1.xcom.local\share\1-ApplicationServer-1\AppServerFiles\CPS. Verify that your user account has administrative privileges, and that you selected "Run as administrator" when you started Windows PowerShell.Error: Caller does not have the required permission to create directory \\LyncServer1.xcom.local\share\1-ApplicationServer-1\AppServerFiles\CPS. Verify that your user account has administrative privileges, and that you selected "Run as administrator" when you started Windows PowerShell.

Same problem with the RGS folder. Of course the most strange question was, how an earth the installation process success to create all parent directories :)

But I understand from Google that the problem was the share itself. I created the share and grant rights only to my installation account "LyncAdmin".

The solution was to grant "Full Access" to group "everyone".

*Bang!!*  #2

Error: Active Directory operation failed on "LyncServer1.xcom.local". You cannot retry this operation: "Access is denied 00000005: SecErr: DSID-031521E1, problem 4003 (INSUFF_ACCESS_RIGHTS), data 0 "

This might be because I did not moved the Lync servers into separate OU and run delegate setup permissions. The shortcut was adding Full Access for my LyncAdmin account to the LyncServer1 object in the AD and then run the Publish topology again.

Maybe I should run the installation as enterprise Admin :)

Reply:

You have to be also a member of the RTC universal server admin to publish the topology.

It is not necessary to give the share special permissions. This will be done by the publishing of the topology.

Btw, have you ever figure out what are the differences between CS... and RTC... groups?

Petri

Reply:

The RTC Groups are the older Groups existing since OCS.

The CS Groups existing since Lync 2010 and you will need both art of security Groups.

These Groups will be deployed with the Forestprep. The ACL will be set through the domainprep for the Domain.

With Lync it is also possible to create own security Groups (RBAC) like Exchange.

Hi Holger,

Thank you for your answer. I just wonder why they still like to bring old groups, even you are installing the pure L2013 environment without any OCS stuff.

Sorry for my short explanation. This RTC Groups still exist from start of OCS and still needed for migration from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync 2013.

RAW drive shows up but can NOT open after re-installing windows 7

Hello,

I have a backup (E) drive that is 3TB so I made it RAW format with the seagate software so I could keep the 3TB without having to make a bunch of partitions. SO... I just re-installed windows 7 on the (C) drive because of keyboard and mouse issues not working in safe mode or in windows.... So now I can not open drive E. It was working great before I formatted.  This RAW drive has ALL my backed up photos... projects... you name it! I can not format this drive! I think its silly that windows 7 doesn't install this drive correctly!

Thank you for any help on this matter!

This is not a Windows 7 problem.  If you used a third party (Seagate) utility for the 3TB hard drive, you will have to discuss your problem with Seagate Technical Support.

Microsoft does not support third party utilities and cannot not provide any information about the inner workings of a Seagate utility!

This is not a Windows 7 problem by any stretch of your imagination!

What difference does it make how the drive became RAW... It was working fine before I re-installed windows 7! So why isn't this due to windows 7? The drive can not be accessed right after windows 7 install. Windows 7 either did something to where it can not be viewed or it didn't do something to be able to view it!

In your original post you state "...I made it RAW format with the seagate software..."  Seagate Software is not a Microsoft product.  Therefore, this is not a Microsoft Windows 7 problem.  Obviously the Seagate software is a critical element in this saga!

You don't even bother to tell everyone whether you are running 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows.  Does the MB have legacy BIOS or UEFI.

Without specific details about your overall situation, your post is almost meaningless because many aspects are important to consider and the two I mentioned above are just a start.

No edition of Windows, or any other OS, can use a RAW disk.  RAW means the disk has not been initialized, partitioned, or formatted.

64-bit Windows 7 does recognize all 3TB of a disk if the system has UEFI.  If the system is a BIOS system, then only 2TB is accessible by the system.

Since BIOS and UEFI are foreign terms to you, I high recommend you find a computer shop near you to look at your computer.  Competent computer repair personnel with know what BIOS and UEFI are.  I am not being derogatory or mocking you, but how can you discuss computer details if you do not know the vernacular?

BIOS - Basic Input/Output System

UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Internet

Thanks for the info..  (Home premium edition if that really matters) Of course I know what the BIOS is :) I made this computer a few years back. I was not familiar with UEFI... when you said MB I was thinking you misspoke and meant megabit and not motherboard :)  This drive must of not of been a RAW drive then but now it is. I found a program to extract the files from it and copy to another drive. I am not sure how good it will do but I will post if it works. If I get all the files off the RAW drive I will format and move the files back. It just does not make sense to me why formatting and re-installing windows 7 on your main drive would cause the other drives to change letters and become RAW. I have a total of 3 hard drives and the old D drive became E and E became D. I did name my computer something different so maybe that had something to do with it. I would still like to know even if I safely get the files off.

Run Diskpart at command prompt for 3TB disk's status (online/offline or mounted/dismounted) and other details, Windows 7 detects online disks. Use Partition Guru's program to copy files from 3TB disk partition to whereever you want. Pull 3TB disk from computer to copy files on other computer if these files are all important.

Windows XP and Windows 7 Deployment Scenario

Hello Guys,

I have a new customer requested us to make two images with the same scenario, one for XP and the other for 7 as following:

1- The image should has answer file that automate the installation from the time media placed to the login menu, meaning that once the bootable media starts, it should automatically Partition the disk, apply the image, answer the language and reginal sittings, join the computer to the domain and stay at the login screen.

2- They need to have a secon boot option for recovery where the same image be stored at the Hard drive second partition, if the user want to recover the image to its default he just select the second boot option which is the recovery one.

For point #1 for windows 7 I can use the OPK and answer file to achive this scenario, but is this will work the same way for Windows XP ?

For point #2 I'm not shure how to do it, any guidance wuold be really helpful.

Losing Memory On Hard Drive

I recently bought a laptop with Windows 8. However over the last few days I have noticed the space on my hard drive gradually reducing when I am not adding anything to the hard drive. I noticed today the hard drive space reduced by 1gb when I emptied the recycle bin (only deleted around 10mb of data). Is there any reason why this might be happening?

Oh, by the way, what if you do the following:

1. Press WindowsKey+PauseBreak and click System protection in the left-hand panel in the System window.

2. In the System properties dialog box in the Protection Settings box check to see protection settings for each of your drives.

3. Locate every drive that has On listed in the Protection column.

4. For each of the drives with enabled system protection click Configure...

5. In the System Protection for <DriveLabel> (<DriveLetter>) dialog box specify how much of the drive space you want to be allocated for usage by System protection.

The Max Usage slider defines the percentage of the total space available on the current drive to be used by System protection for storing backup copies of all files on that drive that are backed up by Shadow copy.

If you don't want the files on that drive to be reserved, select the Disable system protection radio button in the Restore settings box.

When you may want to disable System protection

When you are downloading executable files on that drive (such as setup files) and don't want them to be deleted with data rollback, you have to disable System protection on that drive, because all the files downloaded after the time when restore point to which you are returning has been created will be wiped out after you click System restore and select a restore point to return to.

so i guess this has something to do with the display drivers?

Pagefile.sys supports Windows' virtual memory system.  Generally you want to leave it alone, though in a pinch you can reduce it (and chance running out of memory resources).  Look up "Change the size of virtual memory" in Windows Help for specifics.

Hiberfil.sys is pre-allocated space that allows your system to store its RAM contents when it's Hibernated (a quick form of shutdown).  It is also involved with Windows 8's Hybrid (fast) boot.  If you're willing to do without these things that depend on it, you can disable hibernation entirely and reclaim that 6.3GB by issuing the following command from an elevated command prompt:

POWERCFG  /HIBERNATE  OFF

"AMD64" has to do with the 64 bit instruction set of your processor, which the AMD folks first developed.  "AMD64" was their name for the instruction set, literally.  Just guessing a bit here, but Microsoft probably made the choice to name folders from that.

From:  http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/introduction-to-x64-assembly:

x64 is a generic name for the 64-bit extensions to Intel's and AMD's 32-bit x86 instruction set architecture (ISA). AMD introduced the first version of x64, initially called x86-64 and later renamed AMD64. Intel named their implementation IA-32e and then EMT64. There are some slight incompatibilities between the two versions, but most code works fine on both versions; details can be found in the Intel® 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manuals and the AMD64 Architecture Tech Docs. We call this intersection flavor x64. Neither is to be confused with the 64-bit Intel® Itanium® architecture, which is called IA-64.

Probably because I have blocked ads and parasitic web sites as well as ActiveX from the wild Internet I don't see anything useful at the first URL you posted, so I'm only guessing at what you displayed there.  There's an ability to upload images directly here (using the rightmost icon above the edit box), but that feature may be limited for use only by folks with some posting history, I'm not sure.

Check to see what folder within .\Windows folder consumes much of those 10 Gbytes. I believe that should be %systemroot%\Installer and %systemroot%\WinSxS\ folders. Could you please calculate their contents (just select each of the folders in Windows Explorer and press Alt+Enter, then post the screenshot of Properties window for each of the two).

its interesting as when i first got the laptop is was not using my amd graphics card instead trying to use my intel one. someone looked at this for me and installed something called amd catalyst control center so i could config my switchable graphics.

would this have anything to do with that?

i will keep running windirstat daily and saving the details to see if i can see exactly which folder is continuing to grow in size as i lost another 3gb today.

do you know where the system protection would be located as it still could be this however i am losing more space than this says i am actually using.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Duh, I finally managed to open the second screenshot by the provided link, and yes this is Windows Side-by-Side folder, WinSxS. This folder contains different versions of the same assemblies (read libraries) used by different applications. This WinSxS folder was thought to resolve the so-called DLL Hell problem when two applications using same DLL library may interfere when application A that uses a fictitious library.dll version 2.1 would stop working after you installed application B that used version 1.0.3 of the same library.dll file and overwrote that DLL library.dll of version 2.1. That issue has been known up until Microsoft invented WinSxS and thought to stop that DLL hell. Now, when you install application B nothing will be overwritten. Instead, both libraries will be stored in the WinSxS folder each under specific subfolder named correspondingly.

However, if you think further, when it solves the issue with losing functionality, it results in a total chaos on your system, because now every bit is being kept in Windows what leads to the situation as shown on the figure below:

Notice, how may versions of the same Adobe Flash Player component are now stored in Windows. For whatever sake? Nobody knows. Let's assume it is done for safety.

That what results in WinSxS that may grow to almost hundreds of gigabytes!

Check to see if you can uninstall some of the applications.

IMPORTANT: Microsoft also stores every version of the app that has been installed/updated from Windows Store. That is, the more frequently an app is updated, the more space it eats up from your drive. Check the apps storage folder (%programfiles%\WindowsApps, you have to run Windows Explorer elevated in order to browse that folder).

Okay, WinSxS consumes 10 gigs. Seems like you've had many apps installed recently. Have you checked System Restore as well? I would remove all System Restore points but some recent ones.

You may also check the space consumed by System Restore data by browsing System Volume Information file on every logical volume, but that's risky, you have to give yourself access to that folder using Security tab in the System Volume Information's properties, and it's risky, if you mess up, you'll screw the OS.

Yeah, they used to call it System Restore back in Windows NT 5.x days. So you get yet more 4.5 gigs to free up that this is on a single drive only, what if you check every logical drive?

Unfortunately, it seems like WinSxS is the culprit and there's nothing you can do with it.

so to try to slow it down do you suggest i do not use any apps. does this include the game i have installed eg football manager etc?

Reply:

The reality is that WinSxS doesn't usually grow to be too terribly large.  In any case, trimming it isn't a trivial thing, especially not with a relatively new system (e.g., where there are no service packs to easily trash).

Just FYI, on my Windows 8 test machine (used for 5 months) WinSxS uses 10.7 GB of space.  On my Windows 7 workstation (used heavily for almost 4 years) WinSxS has accumulated 11.3GB of files.

If you're losing 3GB a day it should be pretty easy to spot what's growing, specifically.

I mean every drive listed in the bottom list on the System Restore tab shown above (see Protection Settings, Available Drives).

By default Windows monitors every drive you have listed in the Windows Explorer. I mean, every but some hidden/oem/system partitions.

Nope, but I would monitor other folders as well. 10 Gbytes for WinSxS is okay. Mine is that big although my laptop is pretty bare with software, it has Office and noting else on it.

As Noel just said, if something eats up 3+ gigs a day, that wouldn't be hard to pinch it.
