We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

Please follow these instructions to collect data from the crashes and upload them here, to your Skydrive or a file sharing service like Rapidshare.

How to deploy list workflow created by SPD to another server

How to deploy list workflow created by SPD to another server.

Reply:

Hi Andrea, to deploy a workflow to another server, you should export the workflow like a wsp solution. Follow this instructions to proceed:

If the Workflow is a List Workflow

  1. Open SPD 2010 in you first server
  2. Go to workflows folder
  3. Select the workflow
  4. Click export to visio
  5. Save the file like a vwi (for example server1.vwi). Change their extension to zip.

Now, open the site in the second server using SPD2010

  1. Go to workflows folder
  2. Select list to create a new workflow. The list must be identically like the server 1. Same fields.
  3. Create an empty WF and publish it.
  4. Click export to visio
  5. Save the file like a vwi (for example server2.vwi). Change their extension to zip.
  6. extract zip files at different paths
  7. copy and replace the "workflow.xoml.wfconfig" file from server2.zip to server1.zip folder
  8. select all files into the server1 folder and zipping. this file should be a zip file with the "workflow.xoml.wfconfig" file from server2 (empty wf)
  9. Rename them back to vwi
  10. in SPD2010, select workflows library and click in import from visio, select server1.vwi.

Ready for use you wf...

If the workflow is a reusable workflows:

  1. If you want to use your workflow into another site collection you can use the save as Template button in the ribbon menú. This process must save the WF like a wsp file (SharePoint solution)
  2. deploy it in another server farm like a SharePoint solution for use

RAR/ZIP/Compressed music files have broken text when unpacked

Hello.

I had some music files that were archived in to rars and zips, and when unpacked the language is broken.

INFO

Running OS: Windows 7 Professional
OS Language: English
Language for Non-Unicode Programs: Japanese
Language of files in archive: Korean

This is a very weird situation, and I'm sure only people whom experienced this problem could understand the frustration and maybe have a solution.

I run Japanese Non-Unicode for programs that do not run otherwise.
The language of the files in the archive is Korean and comes out broken with Japanese characters in them.
I don't read Japanese.

What I've tried.

Obviously running non-unicode in Korean will fix the darn thing but I can't change that back and forth. (Which will be more annoying)
I've tried using applocale on the archived file in Korean and unpacking them. Failed.
I've tried using a specific Korean unarchiver. Failed
I've tried using a thirdparty program called "Vistalizer" that installs specific languages in to the OS which supposedly fixes these types of problems. Failed (Or I did something wrong)

Help meh!

What do you guuys think are the possible causes of this issue?

It could be a number of things Roderick,

Do you have DNS entries available on your network so that the target computer, in this case the server is visible to your machines?

Do you have any firewalls in place preventing connectivity?

Can you access anthing on the target server, other websites, file shares etc?

can you at least ping the server by ip or hostname?

Is Win7 a sign of MS future failure ?

Can we get a straight answer - Windows does not remember window size and position - Bug or by design? Workaround?

It doesn't work as it could, and for me, it's not good enough

Not only is it intolerable in it's absence  of function, but all the employee answers i've read are all but straight lies. Window sizes are not persistent, and they must be. Now I cannot even get individual columns to persist. What a m#%)f#%()_% joke.

When i am forced to use a 3rd party window handler, it fouls up view priority and i get desktop bleeding through my browsers.

And the staff dances around the subject and minces words.

What a farce

Hello Linux!... or maybe Mac.... hmmmmmm.

Umm, they Locked the (original) thread, and for no good reason i can think of.
the "hotfix" did not address the actual problem, only the size/position of re-opend windows at log-in.
the actual problem can be demonstrated on any win7 computer in seconds.
the users took the time to make a video, to demonstrate it.
the users are not getting a desired responce, or adequite fix for the problem.
Therfore
by default the users are becomming more and more unhappy (to say the least).

As a 3rd party viewer here to this situation, i feel that the user is justified in thier relentless being a jerk about it, sorry but that is just the way it is.

From what little i know about the system, the information IS stored in the registry , registry tracing shows that this information is being stored.  FOr me it is sort of irritating that it "has to" store this information, wastes this time, and makes a big pigpile mess in the registry itself.  But to not properly USE the stored registry information is a rather strange occurance.  This is unlike microsoft, and unlike any of the previous OS items we were sold, this is a fact, that many of us can prove.

Some people point out that it "didnt work in XP" this is an untrue statement and does nothing to improve the situation, the discussion, or actually fix the issue.
Some people are saying to delete the bags in the registry (the location the size and position information is stored), this is not a fix for win7 or would alter or change the demonstratable event.

The windows size/pos data is stored in the (bags)registry When the Window is Closed (not when it is repositioned) a misunderstanding of its operation leads some people to not understand the issue even after trying to demonstrate it to themselves. (we wont wonder how they can provide OS advice when they didnt even know how it worked before)

In windows XP only 400 windows size/position items were stored (by default) then the older ones were tossed.  This may have acted similar for people who used a LOT of windows, and had proper positioning for each one, but it is not the same at all.  Only when more than 400 positions were stored were any positions not used when something was opened. The 400 limit would not change how the last few your working with worked.
The default for XP (saving that data) was 400, but it could be changed, I could easily have 1400 windows maintaining the position properly.
XP fixes for some of the serious win7 issues are not win7 fixes, and often have nothing to do with them at all.

I am (as usual) not here to argue with anyone, I am complaining, as any other developer would have addressed this issue and fixed it by this time.  I understand the frustration, although I still might not agree with the methods used to display this frustration.

Let it be known that It is very irritating to have a thread marked as answered WHEN IT IS NOT answered. you have loads of them here, and it is a disservice to the community, and is not a form of assistance of any sort.
I am totally against having a thread Locked, when it does nothing to help anything, it only further angers people, if you do not understand that, then you shouldnt be moderating a forum.  There exists a real issue, it ticks people off, platications, and wrong fixes and wild additions do not "solve" problems, please understand that part of it.

The data is stored, the data is not used after it is stored, from a user perspective i concider this problem solvable without an added 3rd party program.
I concider anyone saying "just live with it" or "get used to doing it different" as being overly arrogant for the situation, and not helping the situation.

If what occurs doesnt bother you, you dont have that problem, and all you do is hang around on the web pacifying people, your nothing but noise, and a waste of time. this problem should be easily solvable, and if you yourself cannot actually solve it, then tell someone who can please, and leave ticked off people who expect the "NEW" system to work alone.

thank you for understanding my 3rd party outside view of this problem.  LOL now you can mark it as solved LOL

Fax Error with SBS2008

Well actually my SBS server 2008 is telling all the senders that we did received a fax from them, In fact we don't the event viewer is telling us that the message didn't came in and tell the senders to send it back again. Then main fun is almost everybody didn't programmed their Fax , so the number isn't listed into the error log.

The error made is "32092 fax service failed to receive a fax"

We tried a lot of solution proposed by Microsoft like : changing the ring bell from 1 to 2 for the fax. The modem is 100% compatible with any Microsoft OS , so that could not be the problem. We also tried another modem and didn't work as good as it one was.

how to activate windows server 2008 datacenter VMs

We have purchased 6 windows 2008 datacenter license for our 2 ESX hosts each with 2 physical processor.

I went to the volume licensing site and log into my account and downloaded the datacenter ISO.

I created a VMs on one of the hosts with this datacenter ISO that I have download from my account on the volume license site.

I kept emphasis that I used the ISO I download from my volume licenseing account is that, I was able to create the VMs and everything is fine. However, I cannot find a way to activate the OS. It did not prompt me to do that or can I find it on the server management page.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Weekend experience installing Win8RP

First a question, how do I get the windows 8 installer to give me the error rather than immediately rebooting when a sad face appears?

Second, a retelling of my sunday adventures trying to install windows 8 for a test drive.

PC Details: Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Rev 2.0 with AMD Phenom II X4 Triple Core proc. Patriot Pyro 60GB SSD.

Ready to reload my computer and had a windows 7 ultimate install on the SSD. Tried to boot the Win8RP CD in a pioneerDVR-XD09 USB Dvdrom drive and would crash after a minute on the black background windows screen without the loopy appearing.

Moved in a samsung DVD rom drive and tried an upgrade in the windows 7. After cleaning up some space and uninstalling windows security essentials and a reboot it proceeded to run through the full process until the final reboot and then gave a sad face when trying to boot, back in win 7 it said upgrade has failed and removed changes.

Booted to the CD in the internal IDE drive and it loaded all the way to disk partitioning and selection, and so I wiped the SSD (there were other drives attached at this point) and chose it as the install drive. The system crashed with sad face here and when trying again I found it made a 350mb partition for system reserved. Tried it again and it crashed again, creating a second 350mb partition for system reserved.  Removed all other attached storage and tried again, it let me delete the two partitions but still crashed at this step. Realized the motherboard was set to RAID type sata ports, so downloaded the windows 7 64 driver and tried to load this at the load drivers screen. Selected the controller driver not the console driver and it still crashed. Tried changing to AHCI type and using that driver and it still crashed. Tried changing to SATA types and it would install. It got completely done and when it restarted and tried to boot it crashed.

I went and installed fedora in the mean time to get working again, could somebody hint me how to stop it from rebooting or at least record the errors, as well as some troubleshooting steps. I'm IT support and I want to know a bit about this windows 8 before I start having to help people with it. Any constructive comments would be appreciated, test scenarios and things to look out for.

this is from wht I know not possible. This is the new BSOD screen. It shows you the error text. Where you able to remember this text? Also do you find any minidumps?

Reply:

I can think of two ways.

If you can boot into Windows, open the System properties in the Control Panel.  Then click the Advanced settings link, and in the property page select Startup and Recovery Settings.  There you can disable automatic restart.

From a command prompt in Windows RE, enter bcdedit /set {default} NOCRASHAUTOREBOOT ON.  You may also need to specify where the BCD store is with /store or use /sysstore first.  Bcdedit has extensive command line help.  Use bcdedit /? to get started.

------------------------------------
Reply:

That would be my goal, but I wiped the system to install windows 8 after the upgrade attempt failed. It crashes on dealing with drives, such as selecting the SSD to install to, it creates the 350MB partition, but then crashes instead of proceeding. Unless I set it for SATA mode with I am reluctant to since my understanding is SSDs need at least AHCI to work well. I was hoping there is something to do in the win 8 setup that could stop the reboot.

I don't know how to make any changes to the BCD when the system won't install. I will try installing windows 7 fresh from my technet and upgrade to 8, perhaps it will record any errors when it failed back to windows 7.

The BSOD is there and gone and restarted instantaneously and I have good eyes, but the error literally almost never writes to the screen below the flash of a big sad face and explaining text before it is gone.  Does windows 8 install have a switch, or can I make a change to windows 7 BCD file and have it affect the windows 8 setup?

I'm suspecting that windows 8 can't handle the AMD ahci or raid boot time drivers i'm using from the website designed for windows 7 since it completes setup when I set it for SATA mode and then crashes on startup which could be a separate problem or not, instead of dying after clicking next at the partitioning screen.

Thanks and I will see what happens when I try tonight. I will update my ssd firmware and motherboard bios then see if I can get some troubleshooting data. It's one of those very frustrating microsoft things to give us a crash error but reboot before it's readable.

------------------------------------
Reply:

If the BIOS choices are IDE and SATA, SATA usually implies AHCI.  Also, you should only need AHCI for upgrading the SSD firmware.

I would also look for an updated motherboard BIOS, although it seems that it has not been changed since 8/30/2010.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Sorry, option in bios is all 3. SATA MODE: SATA(legacy), AHCI, RAID. The website provides f6 drivers for AHCI and RAID separately since they seem to be differet things when the bios loads them. AMD might be different from intel in that respect. intel raid and ahci seems to be the same basic thing on those motherboards.. I think that 2010 bios is newer than what I have, but you're right to say that it probably wont help windows 8 much. See if I can contact gigabyte.tw

------------------------------------
Reply:

Yeah, the BIOS choices can be confusing.  I have one motherboard that has Legacy IDE, Native IDE, AHCI and RAID.  Plus AHCI and RAID have the option to enable "IDE combined mode".

The latest chipset drivers are revision 12.6.  But to get the F6 drivers, you will need to extract the package using something like 7zip--or else install it somewhere.  You can choose the extraction path when you execute the package.  I find them under "Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB7xx\AHCI\W764A" for AHCI.

Bug report: insertion of an audio CD interrupts local music playback in WMP

I would like to report a bug in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 8: when inserting an audio CD during local music playback, the playback is interrupted and the CD starts playing instead. This occurs even with all CD autoplay options disabled.

To reproduce, first go to Control Panel - AutoPlay and set autoplay for all CD types to Take no action. Then open WMP, start playing some music and switch to Now Playing mode. This last step is important as the issue only occurs in Now Playing mode and not in Library mode.

Now insert an audio CD into your CD drive. Notice how WMP automatically stops the music that you started earlier, and starts playing the CD instead.

One might argue that this is by design but it seems like unwanted behaviour to me. Local music should definitely continue playing if CD autoplay is disabled in Control Panel. Could someone please forward this to the right people at Microsoft? I hope that it's not already too late to get this fixed in Windows 8 RTM. Thanks!

WS2012 licensing model

I have just read the new licensing model and it's rather shocking. The companies owing currently 2008 r2 enterprise keeping their SA must be really pleased that MS is going to literally steal half of their licenses. Currently I can install 4 VMs if I have enterprise license, however, enterprise is converted to standard which allows only 2 licenses (VOEs). Or did I just understand it incorrectly.

Example: 2 physical servers each licensed w/ 2008 r2 enterprise with SA, (so running hyperv and 4 enterprise guests each). If I upgrade to 2012, do I have to buy 2 more 2012 standard licenses to keep my VMs?

If so, it's really below the belt from MS.

SCOM doesn't give any alerts when active exchange 2010 database in DAG switchover to another server

SCOM doesnot provide any alerts when active database member in exchange 2010 DAG  moved to another server.

Can you throw some light on this please?

Many Thanks

David

Reply:

Hi CrazyItAus:

The Exchange 2010 management pack does not by default alert when DAG copies become active on servers where they were previously in standby, as long as the DAG remains available to the organization, Exchange state is healthy. This is by design and avoids alerts when DAGs roll as part of planned maintenance such as updates or in reponse to storage failures, etc. The thinking is that if you are doing planned maintenance, the alerts would be noise, and if there was a storage failure, you would get that storage failure alert, but the absense of an Exchange alert would indicate DAGs failed over properly.

If you want to be alerted when database copies come online, you can create custom alert generating rules on the server where you don't want the copies online normally.

Did you do a clean install or upgrade? I upgraded and had the same problem. However, there is a note in the Windows 7 Release Notes that solves the problem. Run the Zune software as Administrator. It should then find your device. This worked for me on both my 30 and 80. The only problem I'm still having is that wireless sync won't work. It loads the software, but never connects to the device.

I've been having the same problem with
  • Windows 7 (64 bit) Clean install
  • 64 bit Zune software
  • Zune 4Gb

I tried running it as Vista Compatible and Admin and no luck so far. Going to have another try tonight...

I was having the same problem. Win7 would rocognize my zune 30, but the software would not. I works fine with my XP laptop. Running the zune software as an admin fixed the problem for me.

I'm unable to install the Zune software (64-bit) on Windows 7 x64 (clean install).

It fails to install, stating "Can't install from Microsoft Update" and shows error code 0x800706be. It also provided a link to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101250

I visited that page, and it told me I need to download another 370MB file... It's downloading now, but did anyone else have any problems installing the Zune software?

Zune does not recognize my 120GB Zune.   Software 3.1 installed, downloads podcasts, plays media fine, signed in fine.

Tried running with Vista and with XP compatibility and with Administrator.   No luck.   Thanks for thoughts.

Hmm, this may be some type of intermittent issue because I am running 64bit Win 7 with Zune 64-bit and works fine (I don't use Wireless Sync since I travel a lot).  I would try the zune forms if windows is detecting the Zune but the software is not...there have been similar issues with Vista and Zune having this issue.

Same for me. Win 7 64-bit and Zune 80GB works fine.

64bit W7 with the 64bit Zune software and a Zune 120 -- works fine for me.  I just wish Microsoft would allow Zune/WMP integration.  That and I want a car stereo with a Zune cable!

My problem is a little different.

I'm running Win 7 64bit with Zune 3.1 software. Software installs and runs fine; however, windows will recognize that I have a zune device but it wont successfully install the drivers for it. Therefore it isn't accessable by the zune software ran with admin rights or not.

This is exactly the problem I was having.   Windows 7 would recognize the Zune and show it on the devices screen, but Zune software would not recognize the device to sync.    Since that is one of the main things I want to do, namely sync podcasts with my Zune, I gave up on Windows 7 and reinstalled XP.   Good luck.

Clean install of windows 7. Running 64-bit zune software I can plug in my zune and it will begin to sync but after about 20 seconds it says that my zune is not responding and may need to be restarted. I've restarted it about 20 times but still can't get it to sync.

did some playing with it. Apparently this only happens when trying to sync from zune to collection. However, only with a large selection. If I select a few songs at a time to sinc to computer it works fine... for some unknown reason...

Also. This only seems to be a problem when I attempt to copy a large amount of files. I can sync a few artists at a time without having this problem.

I have tried all the troubleshooting and nothing works, Zune does not recognize my Samsung Focus windows 7 smartphone. Any help would be great. I am ready to give up.

New Lync Installation

I am learning the basics on Lync and want to get an idea on what we will need.  Currently runing the Demo fine for texting and collabiration but would like to take it to the next level and integrate our Cisco UCM 7.15 into the picture.  We have around 500 users (though testing with just ten) on a standard version of the software on a single server.  What are the best practices I need to follow and is there a step by step guide for this integration?

Why start with AdventureWorksDW2008?

Why do most tutorials and books start with learning how to create cubes with AdventureWorksDW2008? I'm not sure I understand this.

In other words, what real benefits are there of using AdventureWorksDW2008 to create cubes? Unless every company in the world uses AdventureWorksDW2008, I don't see the reason. I'm using a datawarehouse that someone else created to create cubes.

This is my train of thought: to really understand how BI works, the ideal order should be 1) Creating a datawarehouse from a relational DB, 2) Creating cubes from that new DW, 3) Generate reports from cubes and the DW.

Hi,

I think I've answered your question in the following thread - http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlanalysisservices/thread/3c20fbaa-2af4-4765-9f76-95d240a0774e/#c2c3adfb-34de-4f37-a44d-d4aa917b46f7

Since  Adventure Works is a fictitious company, everyone feels ok to use this in the demos as opposed to showing a real company's data.

Also, please note that tutorials that are about Analysis Services are won't cover SSIS where the Adventure Works DW is build from scratch. For SSIS and how the DW built, please get a copy of the book http://www.kimballgroup.com/html/booksMDWT.html

Hope this helps!

You have not answered the question.

You don't need a huge database to understand BI. You only need a few tables that I can use to create the GROUPings needed to create the fact tables for a DW.

What's the purpose of understanding how to create a cube with AdventureWorksDW if I don't know how those tables were created?

The purpose of BI is not how to create cubes. It's learning how to create a proper datawarehouse that will generate correct data.
