IE8 hangs on one site (its the company site)
On 8/30/12, 2 users out of over a 1000 when they are going to our company site IE hangs forever, I have tried everything and that includes
Resetting IE, deleting cache, disabling ad-dons, compatibility view, security zones (adding and removing from local sites), uninstalling and re installing IE8, logged in to widows with admin profile (they are all network profiles),
But nothing helped.

Is it a good idea to deploy the sources/sxs folder on my DVDs?
Will it be legal to do this?

JJ,
I am trying to work out (like I assume you are too) how to redistribute the .NET Framework with our product so we maintain the "works out of the box" concept. Unfortunately everything that I've read today seems to indicate that you can't do that anymore.
In my searching I did find this link which has this statement..."Note The sources\SxS folder must not be used as a redistribution mechanism since this is not a supported mechanism."
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848079(v=vs.85).aspx
The only way to install the .NET Framework is to use a powershell script and assume the user has an internet connection. This assumes that Powershell is installed/turned on by default on Windows 8/2012. I haven't had time to try this today but will attempt it tomorrow. But even if it works its not necessarily a solution for us as we currently don't assume that the user has an internet connection.
Anthony.
PS. Even though its not recommended I am interested to know if it is legal to ship the sources/sxs folder on our DVDs.

What does it look like? Sure seems to me they're trying to abruptly leave the "legacy" desktop behind! What company that is known to be ruthless about breaking compatibility do we suppose they're trying to emulate?
One of the first steps in my book, which focuses on maximizing utility of the desktop, is to install the .NET framework via Windows Update, because I KNOW everyone's going to need it. Heck, some of the "legacy" freeware that I advise using uses it.
I suppose you need to update your products to use the latest as quickly as possible.
But I wonder how many users will actually be upgrading to Windows 8. And staying with it I mean.

Windows 8 Setup Bug (Upgrade)
I think I found in a bug in the Win8 Upgrade:
I tried to do a upgrade for my secound OS (installed on the Localdrive F:) to Win8, and it complained that I had to uninstall Sandboxie in order to continue Setup.
So I did, but after the rebbot it complained again.
The I checked the Upgrade-Log, and found that I complained about the Sandboxie installation on my first OS (Installed on the Localdrive C:), meaning it searched c:\program files(x86)\ for incompatible apps, instead of f:\program files(x86)\, where my apps are installed to.
It may be alraight to search in other places then the normal %programmFiles% -Folder, but I don't think it is good to block a installation because one of the other locations has an incompatible app.
After all, it should at least show the location of the incompatible app, if it isn'T in the normal %programmFiles% -Folder, in order to prevent confusion.

"how to ask a question" guideline to our forums
Thank you for posting in TechNet forum. The online problem solving can be relatively time consuming because it may demand several messages back and force to fully understand the symptom and background, especially at the very beginning. Here are a few suggestions that help you get the best answer to your question as quickly as possible.
When You Ask
1. Selecting a good title which summarizes the specific problem you have. It will be the one of the main driving forces for others to want to actually read your item. Choosing a badly-formatted title will drive people away, thinking that since the title is so badly written, so must be the information and the question within the thread.
2. Provide all the necessary information in your initial post. The following information would be very helpful:
- Symptom description: Detailed description of the problem. If you receive any error messages, please let us know the exact error WORD BY WORD.
- Environment: The system environment, such as your OS/application version, your network topology, and your domain environment, etc.
- Any recent relevant configuration change(s): If the issue started to occur after installing any application/updates or changing the configuration, please let us know.
- Any additional information. Tell what you have done prior to asking your question. This will help us understand that you've done so far.
3. Write in a clear language. Avoiding spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Don't type IN ALL CAPS, which in most cases is read as shouting and considered rude.
4. Keep with the same thread. Do not refer to a post you made last year, and above all, Please come back. There are hundreds and thousands of posts where we have seen people given great and wonderfully long answers yet no reply from the original poster.
5. Be courteous to reply, even if it's to say. "I've given up" or thanks that worked. (This helps the whole community when you do this, and makes the people who donate time, warm and fuzzies.)
When answered
Give Positive Feedback. Once you've received a correct answer to your question, either from a Microsoft employee, an MVP, or the community in general, pleases replies that the issue or question has been answered. And if possible mark the solution as answered: This step is important, since it lets other people benefit from your posts.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.
Reply:
would you please tell me how to post a question? I don't see any button to add a thread or ask a question. It's really frustrating.
and here you just gave tips how to write a good question, but not where to click to post the question?????

the problem is , for some reason, when I paste the name of the file (example: image) it doesn't complete the name (image1.png, image.jpg ...) . only when I write it myself it completes it.

Lync Servers - Not Updating AB
Hello All-
Today we had an issue where users were getting the "Cannot synchronize with corporate Address Book..." error in their Lync clients.
I perused the event logs and it appeared that the Lync servers were't updating the AB at 1:30am, as the output of Get-CsAddressbookConfiguration indicates it should. I manually ran an Update-CsAddressBook and the issue was resolved.
We're a bit back on patches, so I am planning to get that tightened up as a matter of good practice, but are there other areas I should be looking at?? It seems like that process not running should generate some Event Log to indicate its not running. Is this a setting that can be enabled/disabled somewhere??
Thanks in advance..

Hi, if you will have trouble with the addressbook, you can look for Events from LS Addressbook Server from Level erro and warning if you have still Problems. Also the Event ID 21005 "Synchronization pass started" should appear every day at 1:30.

MDT 2012 - Time and Currency Setting (InputLocale) is not working in UDI wizard selection
Hello,
We have problem with UDI wizard, all works well except time and currency setting. No matter what we select, it defaults to EN.
This is strange that such a simple thing is not working! not sure what could possbile going wrong with our setup.
Thanks,
Sreedhar

You need to provide more info so we can help. I can work out that you're trying to deploy an OS using SCCM MDT and UDI.
What OS is it?
What region are you in?
InputLocale is only for XP/2003. There's an article for that on my blog.
For Vista/7 I have another post here. So for UK the settings are:
SkipLocaleSelection=YES KeyboardLocale=0809:00000809 UserLocale=en-GB UILanguage=en-GB SkipTimeZone=YES TimeZoneName=GMT Standard Time

Hi Andrew,
sorry for missing that info, this is what we are trying to do
Deploy Win7 64bit image offline using MDT UDI wizard to provide an option for users to select language selection based on their region. This is expected to be given to worldwide users with single USB media for remote users.
Our test environment is
Windows 2008 R2, SCCM 2007 R3, SQL 2008 R2, MDT 2012, with Lenovo T420 laptops. in regional setting all of them works except Format. hope someone might already have worked on this issue.
Thanks for your time.

Like Sreedhar we are also creating one deployment process for the worldwide deployment so cant set the language in INI files or XML. How do u allow any location to select the keyboard from the wizard and that gets applied automatically.
Timezone and MUI all work fine
Thanks in advance

I am experiencing the exact same behaviour too when using the UDI wizard during my OSD (Windows 7, MTD 2012, ConfigMgr 2012). Keyboard layout and time zone settings are applied correctly, but not those pesky formats. They insist on staying "en-US".

I found this in the Update 1 release notes:
- The time and currency format is not configured correctly for UDI Wizard configuration files created in MDT. This issue can occur, because the task sequence variable configured for the Time and currency format box (InputLocale) is incorrect.
Note This problem does not occur if you create a new UDI deployment using MDT 2012 Update 1—only for UDI deployments that were created in MDT 2012.
To work around this issue, open the UDI Wizard configuration file in the UDI Wizard Designer. The UDI Wizard Designer automatically updates the UDI Wizard configuration file to use the correct task sequence variable (UserLocale).
However my UDI was created in Update 1 and it still does not work. My Time and Currency combo box also says "userlocale" so I have no idea why this does not work.
Any ideas?

Hello,
Actually, I did manage to figure this out on my own. I realized that I only had problems when trying to apply Swedish using the UDI. So I ended up manually modifying the language XML's. I believe it was because Swedish only sets a two letter combination instead of the two plus two (I believe it sets sv insead of sv-SE in this particular case).
Try editing the ListOfLanguages.xml in the Tools\x86 folder (or the x64 if you are using that one).
I also configured my Unattend.xml like this:
<component name="Microsoft-Windows-International-Core" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">

I am not 100% sure what the UDI looks like after Update1, but are you sure you are selecting the option "Swedish - Sweden"? I know that in the old version there was an option called "Swedish" too. A bit confusing.
Also, I suggest that you take a look at the variables before and then right after you finish the UDI wizard. Then you can really see which values were set by the UDI wizard.

Hi again.
Yep it is still the same in update 1 with (in my case) Danish - Denmark. Very confusing and annoying for the helpdesk. They will choose the first in the list so I guess I will need to remove that one (Danish only) completely from the listoflanguages.xml.
Choosing "Danish - Denmark" over just Denmark will fix the keyboard settings but "Time and Currency" still defaults to en-US.
Just found 4 new grey hairs...

Missing VirtualPC for system which don´t support EPT/SLAT
Dear all, as HyperV doesn´t support systems without SLAT/EPD I don´t see any MS-supported solution for fixing compatiblity issues & problems like XPM /VirtualPC under W7Pro.
This problem affect all systems with intel core duo, which could run quit perfect with W8pro by my experience!
Except all peripherals, which need an enhanced support by manufactures:
eg. any HP OfficejetPro Multifunctions devices: Officejet Pro 8xx, only basis support for print with LAN available !
This was same issue as with MS-VISTA and W7, full support of W7 after 18 Months after MS product release.
That might affect nearly all similar devices.
With VirtualPC/XPM enhancement I could fix this problem with seamless integration for my customers without
an additation lizenz.
As long I don´t find a similar solution, I will not recommend a rollout of W8Pro with my SMB customers.
I downgrade to W7 is an additions efford, which is not payed by my customers.
I have tested VirtualBox, which runs fine, but it doesn´t fix the licenz problem

Hi Killi1987,
No, you must have DirSync installed and running to sync mobile devices to Windows Intune. When the Exchange Connector syncs with Windows Intune it needs to find the user that is assigned to that device in AD. That can only be done when you have DirSync enabled and running.
See this link for more information about setting up MDM: http://onlinehelp.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsintune.latest/hh880863.aspx
Hope that helps.

How to create an autodiscover for Google Apps or similar
Couldnt find anything online so I thought I'd post this in the hope it is of use to someone
Not perfected yet but works well
1) create a DNS entry A record in the domain of the email address - Name:
Autodiscover IP: of-a-web-server
2) On the webserver create a website
autodiscover.your-domain.xx and apply an SSL certificate matching this
name
3) If using IIS create a script map so that *.xml is handled by
%windir%\system32\inetsrv\asp.dll and allow POST and GET verbs
4) In the
website root create a subfolder called autodiscover
5) Create a file in

New server Windows 2008 R2 x64 - Very slow login
Hi,
I am having some trouble with a server, so let me explain the issues. We have two HP Proliant DL380 G7 servers. I have built both of them from the ground up with Windows 2008 R2 x64 OS. There are two NIC interfaces on both servers which have been teamed together in link aggregation mode.
One server was configured as a database server and the other as a web server. I have had no issues what so ever with the database server. However, the web server for some reason is very very slow when it comes to logging into the system. It boots just fine all the way to the Ctrl-alt-del screeen. Once, I log in it will sit at the welcome screen, then just sit at the apply user settings and finally just sits at the preparing desktop before logging in.
It does this behavior at both the local kvm and during an RDP session. It would use to login via RDP after 1-2 minutes, now it won't even establish a RDP session as it times out.
Here are some other issues I observed with this web server during some of the configuration steps toward making it a production ready system. First, upon joining it to the domain it had issue contacting AD to verify my credentials but finally accepted them and joined system to the domain. Also, we add security groups to the local administrator group of the server. When I put the name in the box and click on check it goes grey, then it pops up wanting another location for the name. I just hit Ok and then it underlines the name and the group is added. This is very odd and erratic behavior.
I have looked through the event logs which provide no information as to the root cause(s) of the behavior on this web server. I have had HP replace the system board since the NIC interfaces are integrated on the board with no luck. I am planning to break the team and try setting up the IP stack on just one physical NIC interface to elivate the teaming aspect.
Any advice would be most welcome at this point since it has been frustrating to watch one server work perfectly while the other one struggles.
Thank you,
Eric :)

Hi Eric,
Have you had much luck finding a solution?
I have recently installed two HP ML350 Servers. The first server is configured with SBS 2011. The second is a Windows 2008R2 files server. Like yourself I had issues adding the file server to the new domain. Once joinned logging onto the domain takes approximately 2 minutes from the Welcome message and then a further 4 minutes applying user settings. Adding Windows 7 pc's to the new domain work perfectly.

We also have a similar issue with our Windows 2008 R2 Ent with SP1 running on HP BL465c G7 for SolarWinds. The slow RDP issue is both for local and domain accounts, first it sits at welcome screen for 10 Minutes, then at Applying User Settings for 10 minutes.. likewise it takes more than 30 minutes login to the server.

FYI - Number of Activations for Windows 8 Enterprise
When you get your product key from TechNet Pro for Windows 8 Enterprise, you have only one product key available, but it also says "Multiple Activations" under it. So I was wondering, what exactly does that mean? As we will be testing Windows 8 on different PCs and reinstalling it multiple times, I wanted to know how many times it could be activated. Below is a chat I had with a "TechNet Concierge". Did not really get a definitive answer, but it is more than I knew.
Please wait for an agent to respond. You are currently '1' in the queue.

You are now chatting with 'Ice'.
Ice: Hello and welcome to the TechNet Online Concierge, Ukon. How may I assist you today?
ME: Hi. Windows 8 Enterprise x64 - there is only one product key available, but it says "multiple activations". As we will be testing this OS, and will need to install it multiple times, what exactly does "multiple activations" mean?
Ice: Multiple activations means you may use the same key to install Windows 8 on multiple different machines.
ME: Right - that I get, but how many times?
ME: 3, 5, 10...?
Ice: As far as I know, more than 10.
ME: OK - What if we are using one reference PC for Win8 Enterprise, and will be re-installing on that same PC, multiple times - does each activation on the same PC count?
Ice: In this scenario, the activation will not count against the 'multiple activation' limit, if there is no hardware change on the same PC,
ME: OK - and one last question - what is the grace period for activation, once the OS has been installed? We are already seeing a faint reminder on the desktop saying to activate - after 1 day.
Ice: Let me check. One moment please.
ME: OK
Ice: The grace period of Windows 8 Enterprise activation is 10 days.
Ice: Did you install it 9 days ago?
ME: no. today.
ME: So it is probably just a little nag reminder to activate. I am guessing it will get less faint over time.
Ice: I'd suggest you to activate it as soon as possible to avoid any potential issues.
ME: OK. Thanks for helping - appreciate it.
Ice: My pleasure. May I know if there is anything else I could help you with at this moment?
ME: No - that is it :)
Ice: Have a nice day, Ukon.
Ice: Thank you for using the TechNet Online Concierge. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please feel free to come back again.
ME: u2 - bye.

My MAK key had 19 activations - argh!. If you use VAMT to activate installations you can check the number of activations left for your key. Mine is down to 17 now :(
Windows 7 Enterprise used to have 500 activations, as did win 2008. I think Win7 MAK-keys also has 19 activations from now on.
Anyone care to shed any light on why on earth someone thought no-one was ever going to activate more than 19 clients in the lab? Sure, with VAMT I can re-image and "reuse" the activation, but still only on 19 different (physical) machines. Not sure about virtual clones.

Problems adding new columns in a Large List
Yesterday, a list admin tried to add a new column to large SharePoint List. This list has 4700 items, 31 columns, 57 views, (not counting personal views) and thousands of attachments. (When exported to CMP files it is around 250mb). She tried to add a multiline plain text column. Afterward, opening or editing an item was painfully slow and the view and edit forms were rather messed up. (Incomplete)
This went on for several hours before they got a hold of me (it was my day off). I tried removing the field she added - but that didn't seem to help (Probably made things worse). I started the restore process which means I created a temp DB, restored the SQL backups of the Site to the temp DB, did a recover from an unattached content database in SharePoint Admin which exported the list, then used Powershell to import the list. Initially I tried to import over the existing list but it was still messed up so I deleted the list and imported the list again. (Unfortunately you lose permissions, workflows, and personal views when you have to delete the list and restore it from an import.)
Anyway, my question is what is a reasonable expectation for a list of this size to be 'in limbo' when a new column is added. I've told them that this kind of change will have to be done outside of normal working hours in the future but I want to clarify if that has to be on a week-end or whether an evening would be adequate. (a 6:00pm change would give about 12 hours where the list is accessed very little.)
Or is this really odd behavior? This isn't the first time I've had to do a restore after they added a new column. I think after I recovered the last time, I added the field on a weekend for them - and I don't recall that there were any issues when I added the field.

I'd do some experiments with that .cmp file you made. Make your own version of the same list and add/remove some columns. My hunch is that you will see your SQL Server memory and/or processor pinned at the top. I'm guessing you don't have enough RAM.
Also consider...
If the big list is causing problems, does all of that information need to be in the same place? Could you break it up and/or archive some items. I personally would hate to tell my end users "Don't use SharePoint to do a specific work related task between the hours of 7am and 7pm". It leads to people distrusting the technology.

I restored a copy of the list to a test area. I was able to add the same type of field to it without issues. (It was on the same SharePoint server but a different web application.) So I'm not sure what caused it to freak out the first time. I did find that there was an InfoPath form attached to this list - but not in use and it had input boxes for fields that no longer existed. I think this is a remant from our 2003 days. I have no idea if it is is a factor in this. I will be deleting it.
This particular list is supposed to be getting migrated to a call center applicatin that is a part of our ERP package so I don't want to invest too much time on it.
Thanks for your suggestions though.

Icons are suddenly replaced by rectangles, apps are blank
I'm using Windows 8 enterprise on my work network and at home (for testing) today I noticed that the icons on all of the metro type screens are replaced with 2 or 3 rectangles.. I've noticed this icon issue at the log in screen, any metro type screens and in internet explorer
also my metro style apps come up blank. I don't use them that much so far so no big deal but they are completely useless. For example my calendar app comes up and flashes the normal screen then turns all gray..no response at all.
If I were depending on this I would be out of business!, the icon issue is really just an inconvenience

SharePoint 2010 - How to send HTML output from the server as a mail attachment through powershell?
Hi All,
I am currently using a script for capturing the health maintenance report from the Central admin to be sent out as an email to selected recipient. The issue as this report gets lengthier this is causing the Outlook to crash when opening this mail. Hence, I am looking for an option to have this report sent as a HTML attachment to my mail. Is it possible?
The script that I am using is from http://get-spscripts.com/2012/03/sending-sharepoint-system-notification.html

Everytime I use Windows there are always features that are missing. I'm very sorry about this. I thought that in 2009 a Virtual Human Interface would add a personality to Windows and that any Windows events could be linked to a Living Windows 3D World by unifyng Windows+UVHI+Videogames Worlds Like.
A.I.V.O.S.= Artificial Intelligence Videogame Operating System. For example if I install Office In Windows 3D World on my desktop a 3D office building is built with a virtual agent. I can speak to It and It can do everything related to Office World. Windows can still work in classic mode but also in this one with two monitors: one for classic view and the other one with 3D live Windows View where the soul of the OS is represented by a good virtual agent with whom I can speak without the need to use still keyboard and mouse except when necessary of course. Since Windows 3.1 It didn't change too much after all. I have to do always with cold and boring machines. And now that Bill retired I don't know if anyone is able to do It and When. Hi.

Hi.
Speaking about interfaces, I was downloading Windows 8 Trial before stopping its download.
How can I change Windows 8 interface in order to make It appear like Windows 7 in the simplest way?
I don't like Metro interface for Desktop PCs.
Not taking into consideration Windows Server, I wonder why Windows Xp is good(+1), Windows Vista is slow(-1),
Windows 7 is good(+1) and Windows 8 Metro interface is not ok for a desktop PC(-1).
It seems that there is a good os every two until now.
I expect a customizable solid hologram (by using programs like DAZ 3D studio) with a programmable personality as an interface for Windows in the next future.
I want to speak to It. Nothing less.
Without Bill Gates Microsoft lost his soul after all.
Hi.

MDT 2012 Share Hosted on OSX Server
Hi Guys,
We have a site with 8 PC's(windows) but their server is Mac used for file sharing. Can we firstly host MDT 2012 share on the Mac Server.
Also was wondering if we can use DeployStudio to boot PC's via PXE to WinPE instead of using Windows (WDS) as we have no windows server?
Is this Possible?
What would be the best deployment method using MDT2012 to deploy Windows 7 64 bit OS's to these 8 PC's? At this stage was thinking via Boot DVD or USB HDD?
Or can PXE of one Windows 7 Machine that has Some sort of PXE software that works with MDT.
Regards,
Shane

SBS 2011 STD - "Volume Shadow Copy Service error" causing Backup failure when backing up Shadow Copy Components & m/s Info Store
I have had Symantec on the phone about this backup failure until now, as i kept getting error code E0008516 or E0008526, but after around 2 weeks of them working on it, they say due to the VSS failure on this SBS below (which, when searched online comes up as a failure to ignore) but they said the backup will not work until VSS is fixed or repaired.
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Failed resolving account spfarm with status 1376. Check connection to domain controller and VssAccessControl registry key.
Operation:
Abort Backup
Context:
Execution Context: Requestor
Current State: SnapshotSetCreated
Error-specific details:
Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spfarm), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist.
( gives following failure on symantec:
The job failed with the following error: Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed)
Ive tried the follwing fix, but to no avail:
Ive run the test vss writers command (as well as symantec) and all writers seem stable with no errors, yet ive noticed the Sharepoint one maybe missing.
Ive tried a number of other fixes, any more suggestions? i may have to give up and ring m/s in the end.
If i knew how to repair/rebuild vss in sbs 2011 id do that...if its possible? but it may be a Sharepoint problem, and this company dont use it... could it be taken off?
Thanks
Dan
