Folder Redirection - could be better

Folder Redirection - could be better

Hi - I've just tried the GPO folder redirection - it worked (after a few reboots) - perhaps I was just being impatient

My folders (Contacts, Desktop, Documents, etc), eventually ended up in sub-folders of  \\Server\Server Folders\Folder Redirection\Tom\

Now that's fine if users don't logon to different pcs, but when I logged-in to another pc, it's folders got re-directed & merged to the same place  !
This means my folder(s) now have icons & files from both pcs - including Desktop icons for programs that are not installed on this pc, and saved games that belong to games on the other pc !

This would have been much better if it had been implemented with a file structure similar to that of File History - \\Server\File History Backups\Username\pc name

-Tom

How to Migrate SharePoint List data to sql server ?

Hi,

I want to migrate a SharePoint list data to a a table in SQL server 2008.
can any one guide in doing so or is there any sample available for the same?

Thanks,

First, create your database in SQL Management Studio with all the columns you want. From there you'll want to export your SharePoint list to Excel. I would recommend saving as a csv but if you want to keep it as Excel be sure to save as the older .xls format. Then go back to SQL Server Mgmt Studio. Connect to the desired database, right click then choose Tasks > Import Data. Choose data source: flat file for .csv or Excel for .xls. Just follow the prompts from there and you should get your data into SQL.

Hierarchy Permission Impact on Viewing Same Hierarchy

I am using a derived hierarchy to assign hierarchy member permissions, using a node in the first level down from the root.  The member-level security functions fine, but the issue is that the user wants to see their piece of the hierarchy in the Explorer from that node down.  This would help them tell if it correct.  Problem is that the explorer is not allowing access (the hierarchy does not appear) in the drop down under "Hierarchies".

I've tried creating a hierarchy just for security purposes, but they still cannot see the desired hierarchy.

Advice appreciated.

How to stop the blinking flashing taskbar icons...??

The blinking flashing blinking flashing blinking flashing task bar program icons is by far the most annoying feature in windows 7, and as far as i can see there is no way to turn it off...

I have tried to edit the Registry ForegroundFlashCount, they still blink blink blink....
Installed other programs with features to make it stop, they still blink blink blink....

Honestly i feel like smashing my screen every time they start blinking... At least with webpages i can close them and find my info elsewhere when they have blinking flashing commercials, but i can't do that with windows until l find another platform where i can use my programs and i don't have to look at annoying blinking flashing icons...

So, is there any way at all to make them stop blinking..?

And if not, then why..? Why must I and so many other people that find it insanely annoying sit and look at it, why must i shot down programs so I'm able to work because they blink in my face, and therefore cannot follow conversations and other things when i care to...?
Why is it so important to MS that they absolutely have to blink and flash, and there is no feature to disable it..?

I'm not saying that the feature must go away, it is fine for people who like blinking flashy things.. But for gods sake, why can't you MS people not just make a little box when right clicking on the task bar that says "Disable annoying blinking flashing task bar icons"

Have a great day....

The only time I've seen a flashing icon on the taskbar is when a security suite finds corruption,

Or if ie9 looses a website (website stops responding)

I've never seen a program like office word/ outlook.....flash,

What programs are flashing ?

Hi,

If the blinking flashing occurs again, please help me collect the screenshot.

How to capture a screenshot
------------------------------------------
1. When the blinking flashing occurs, press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save".
4. Save the picture onto your desktop and Upload to SkyDrive or forum.

Dissed... You are very lucky that you only use programs that does not flash, blink and pulsate all the time... :-)

Niki Han... Here is an image of blinking annoying task bar icons, but a little hard to illustrate in a picture without it just looking like a highlight. If i knew how i would record it and show you a video of how annoying it is... And yes it is win 7, i just changed the way the taskbar look...

And here is a illustration of how they can make a user friendly interface in other programs, where you can choose in the preferences if you want buttons to blink all the time or not...

Searching the internet, i find many many people that are annoyed and frustrated about this.. Also when you try to hide the taskbar, it will constantly pop back up when a program start blinking... I don't know if I'm epileptic or not, but i can't work with it, i don't understand why i have to shot down programs where i like to follow group chats and other info because it starts to blink all the time when I'm not directly in the program but working in another program..
Why can't i just look at it when i care to, instead of having a button blinking, flashing and pulsating in my face..???

Have a nice day... :-)

Extra column in csv export report server 2008

Hi,

I am facing an issue related to csv export in Report server 2008(ssrs). When I export csv form ssrs toolbar export utility it gives some extra column in csv but in other export like Excel,Word,PDf etc it works fine. I am passing column header names as parameters to the report. It looks like in csv export there is an extra column added for each such parameter.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Hi,

Same here. Extra column with a name? not sure why. I am going to have to look into the report itself. I'll let you know if I find something. Peace.

How Do I Boot Windows 8 From an Existing VHD Setup? Re-Using Windows 8 Installations On a Bare New PC/Laptop. Migrating Windows Installations

Hello,

I have a laptop with Windows 8 native VHD boot setup. I would like to reuse the VHDX file I use to boot into Windows on this old laptop on a new laptop. This is the same DELL hardware, so lets leave all hardware compatibility questions aside.

I am having problems booting into Windows on a new laptop.

That's what I have done so far.

1. Booted the new laptop into Windows 8 Setup program from UEFI: INT13(,0x80) BIOS interface option (available from the boot menu by pressing Shift+F12 in DELL BIOS) using USB stick inserted into the new laptop. This started Windows 8 Setup program from UEFI firmware what is necessary to allow Windows 8 to boot from a GPT partition.

2. Launched command prompt within Windows Setup WinPE Shell by pressing SHIFT+F10 and typed

c:\>diskpart DISKPART>select disk 0 DISKPART>convert gpt

DISKPART>exit

to convert laptop's disk to GPT format (this is the only disk available in the laptop).

3. In the Windows Setup window opened I clicked Next after having accepted language, time, and keyboard settings (all defaulting to the US/English; this is just to avoid CLID locale issues before Windows is started).

4. Clicked Install on the next dialog box and accepted License terms.

5. Selected Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) option.

6. On the Where do you want to install Windows? window, I chose the only available drive and clicked New within Options to automatically repartition the drive.

7. Because I converted the drive to GPT, Windows Setup created 4 (four) partitions:

Drive 0 Partition 1: Label: Recovery 300 Mbyte Type: Recovery Drive 0 Partition 2: Label: <EMPTY> 100 Mbyte Type: System Drive 0 Partition 3: Label: <EMPTY> 128 Mbyte Type: MSR (Reserved) Drive 0 Partition 4: Label: <EMPTY> REMAINING_BYTES_ON_THE_DRIVE Type: Primary

8. Pressed SHIFT+F10 to start command prompt window and typed:

c:\>diskpart  DISKPART>select disk 0  DISKPART>list part  DISKPART>select part 4  DISKPART>filesystems  DISKPART>format fs=refs label="System" quick  DISKPART>exit

This formatted data partition to ReFS file system.

9. Copied the win8.vhdx VHDX file I use for booting on my current old laptop to this new ReFS partition.

10. Patched all partitions available on the disk 0 of the new laptop with boot code by typing

C:>bootsect /nt60 ALL /force

at the command prompt.

11. The bootsect tool failed to place boot files on the ReFS partition but successfully copied them to the two available FAT32 partitions:

Recovery partition which is 300 Mbytes in size

System partition which is 100 Mbytes in size

12. Started command prompt (SHIFT+F10) and attached the VHDX file I want to re-use:\

C:\>diskpart  DISKPART>select vdisk c:\win8.vhdx  DISKPART>attach vdisk  DISKPART>exit

13. Discovered the drive letter assigned to the attached VHDX drive (F):

C:\>diskpart  DISKPART>list vol  DISKPART>exit

14. Assigned a drive letter to the System partition:

C:\>diskpart  DISKPART>list part  DISKPART>select part 3  DISKPART>assign letter=g  DISKPART>exit

15. Copied Boot Configuration Database used for booting in this win8.vhdx virtual disk drive to the System partition:

C:\>bcdboot f:\windows /s g: /f ALL /v /m {GUID_OF_REFS_PARTITION_RETURNED_BY_BOOTSECT}

16. Restated laptop

Now when I boot into Windows Boot Manager, I see recovery screen stating:

Recovery Your PC needs to be repaired The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing orcontains errors. File: \windows\system32\winload.efi Error code: 0xc000000f You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have anyinstallation media

(like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again Press F8 for Startup Settings

Pressing Enter or F8 just refreshes the screen and gives no result.

I tried to verify the Boot Configuration Database:

1. I started Windows 8 from the same USB installation media I used before and click Next on the first screen of Windows Setup.

2. Instead of clicking Install now on the second screen I clicked Repair your computer at the bottom of the screen.

4. On the Choose an option screen I clicked Troubleshoot.

5. On the Troubleshoot screen, I chose Refresh your PC option and clicked Next on the Refresh your PC screen

6. The next Refresh your PC screen has shown:

Choose a target operating system.

VHD Windows 8

This indicates that Windows 8 setup correctly detected my existing Windows installation.

However after choosing this option I saw the following:

The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.

What does it mean? How could it be locked when it is not?

Automatic Repair also did not help returning:

Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC Press "Advanced options" to try other options to repair your PC or "Shut down" to turn off your PC. Log file: \System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

Uh, on what partition I should be looking for that \system32\Logfiles folder?

I checked the Boot Configuration Database settings by typing

C:>bcdedit /enum

It showed the following:

Windows Boot Manager -------------------------- identifier {bootmgr} device partition=\Device\Harddiskvolume2 path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi description Windows Boot Manager locale en-us inherit {globalsettings} default {default} resumeobject {HERE_GOES_A_GUID} displayorder {default} tools displayorder {memdiag} timeout 30 Windows Boot Loader ------------------------- identifier {default} device vhd=[C:]\win8.vhdx path \windows\system32\winload.efi description Windows 8 locale en-us inherit {bootloadersettings} isolatedcontext Yes allowedinmemorysettings 0x1500007 5osdevice vhd=[C:]\win8.vhdx systemroot \windowsresumeobject {HERE_GOES_A_GUID} nx OptIn bootmenupolicy Standard detecthal Yes

This all does not look suspicious to me. Everything looks okay. The boot device is System partition which is second partition part 2 on drive 0, os device resides on the VHDX drive on c:\win8.vhdx

This all is confirmed by Windows Restore that correctly finds the VHD boot record.

What is the problem? ReFS file system?

How do I boot the system from the VHD drive? Why does it NOT see the winload.efi file?

I would appreciate your help!

Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Reply:

As I figured it out, this issue is a limitation of the current version of ReFS.sys driver.

It's a bit of a pity that MSFT tools and the driver itself are not yet aware of boot troubleshooting and do not send any messages to each other making it hard for the end-user to guess the problem he's facing.

Converting the last partition to NTFS solves all the problems and makes the PC boot into the same VHDX drive that is now located on NTFS rather than ReFS partition.

I'd appreciate if somebody could confirm or reject this assumption.

Thank you.

if you mean the output for Url column is too narrow, so that not all part of the url is displayed,

you can run

Get-SPWebApplication "https://test"|Get-SPSite -limit ALL|Get-SPWeb -limit ALL|Select-Object Title,Url,lastitemmodifieddate |sort lastitemmodifieddate |out-gridview

to display result in a gridview. you need PowerShell-ISE to use gridview;

Hi All,

The Store is tied to your region and have specific apps released for different region, so if you are unable to find any app go ahed and in Control Panel -> Clock, Language and Region -> Change Location and then your store will start pulling the apps same as of your friends.

My requiremnt is to assighn sharepoint object in group; for example group of folders; this folder could be destributed in many Lists

for example I will assign Folder1, Folder8, Folder11 to an Object Group (Finance)

then I will Give Permission to user/group on (Finance)

and this Permission will be automatically applied to Folders in Finance Group

This Concept is Similar to ACL(Access Control List)

Reply:

Hello Fadi,

Thank you for the clarification. A group of objects is the parent object of the group, parent of a list is a subsite. You may place the group of lists and folder under a sub site with  unique permission (not inheriting from the parent site) and manage the permission on the subsite level. So you don't have to manage the list permissions individually. You will have to categories the lists and folder in to multiple sub sites if you want to add different set of users/SharePoint groups with different permission levels.

Seriously now, how the heck can Windows 8 be expected to be successful?

Aside from all the other issues and the forced appstore, and whether W8 sucks or not... how can can it be successful at all?

Everyone in IT knows the "average users"; the average user has a mental collapse if an icon moved three pixels to the left. They have thrown tantrums because of pretty marginal (compared to W8) changes in the start menu and the color schemes in the previous versions.

Now we have a version where THE WHOLE GUI IS CHANGED. Not even the start button is visible. Even longtime Windows professionals have difficulties adapting to it and Microsoft intends to ship this version to the moms&pops all over the world?! With the only remedy being the 15 seconds tutorial video!? That's madness. Sure, Win 95 was very different to 3.1 too, but the average computer user back then was what a "geek" is now.

Microsoft is on some serious kool-aid here if they think this will go smoothly..

Reply:
I agree.  Functionally, win8 is not TOO bad (though it really hurts my eyes).  The average user is probably way too stupid, or completely lacks the desire to either figure out the new UI, or figure out how to run win8 like win7.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Yeah, the forced app store can be a devalue. I still had problems remembering you need to click the title to the see full catalogue in 1 category. They should look to feature requests on the Windows Phone. A lot of new features ... but some not feature complete. I.e. against "SCRUM" :o) Hopefully they will manage to quickly changed that. So not just bugs - but value adds coming out quickly or they can be in trouble. But I am thinking of the App Store. Much better ways of handling all those potential apps. But may be they need to wait - untill it fills up - to create that i.e. taxonomy.

Anyway my wife - and thats kind of funny - are not into computers at all. She does not use them. I told her once, she should not worry because one day the UI would change from this intermediary UI stuff - so if she'd rather spend her time on something else don't bother with computers now. Wait untill it becomes easier for her to start something ... more intuitively. I.e. HIC ... collaborating machines.

So let's see. When the surface RT comes out - she's going to have one. And a Windows Phone as well. I eager to see how that Little experiment works out. She actually wants to go online and check some stuff now. But I have talked her into waiting - so she can just skip the old UI and the complexities of OO in that interface.

I have served users that have problems with having an overview - for several years. And they would always run full screen. Office workers, administrators - they even tried to do file manipulations in the open file dialogues - thinking they were in Explorer. But that's typically some women like my mum, is it not :o) Anyway my dad does not even know how to reset the time recorder on a VHS-machine. However, he was the responsible teacher for buying electronics for the school at the time.

So there you go. Those users just don't know how to operate an OO UI - unless they are super users.

However, users grow - and the kid will may be demand the OO UI back :o) Or may be not?

I am a field hockey coach - and the other day I asked one girl who had an iphone - like all the other girls - if she was into the could or iCloud. She said "What??!". And then she continued messaging. So I just kept speaking and said I reconned she was just using it to texting and as a phone - and surfing pages. She just nodded. When we're at hotels at tournament, they want free Wi-Fi. Texting. So nothing really changed there. May be they will go online and surf some pages.

Other than that it is just a commodity. Something they need or want. They did not care when I was running around with a Windows Phone I bought to play with. After commercials had run locally they were like Do you have a Lumnia (I did not - I had an Omnia 7). So lets see ...

It's a commodity thing. Nothing to do with software or software design. This is "less" about the computer science but still some professional issues. They are definitely not into computing. People will leave work having reported the computer did not work today. Some cheer when the computer does not work. They go home ... and get free time. Another reason for making stuff more realiable.

I think you have it exactly wrong. A whole new generation of users will grow up on Metro and look at the desktop and startmenu as dinosaurs. That it is more efficient and has multitasking and can see more than 1.3 apps at once will not matter in the slightest. The general public will not care that things which take 72 finger swipes and taps and squishes and rotates could have been done in a couple of right-clicks.

Most all non-iPad tablet devices will come with Windows 8 and that is Microsofts primary goal right now. Somewhere in the blogs (cant find it now) was a post showing that desktop sales were flat and laptop/notebook sales were going up and tablet/pad sales were exploding - thats where they are interested.

I think the real question is, how can it be successful "on desktops" at all, and if that is a major consideration for Microsoft.

Reply:
I think as resolutions increase on tablet/phones someone (I guess not Microsoft) will make it possible to run multiple resizable windowed apps at once on the same screen. The future cannot be only seeing one app on the screen at one time. This same limitation existed in DOS.

Aside from all the other issues and the forced appstore, and whether W8 sucks or not... how can can it be successful at all?

Because if any guy wants a new computer, it's gonna have windows 8 on it.  Period.  Success is guaranteed.  You can look at sales during vista, a widely hated OS, and see that it sold quite well.

That's right phailyoor, not just any guy, but any company as well.  Software assurance downgrade rights require all large companies to buy W8 licenese pre-installed, who then pay extra for 'software insurance/assurance' and the right to wipe W8 to put a real OS on it.  Essentially large companies pay twice for every single desktop.  Gonna make 100 million in W8 sales on that alone, XP to W7 migration's are coming to an office building near you.

Who says people have to like something for it to be a success.

Meh, we have 45K desktops and are Fortune 500, so we over-pay for everything.  Even went to more trouble and created a fully customized sysprep image for our vendor to pre-install.  I don't know if it happens at the HP slave camps, or at our lease-vendor, but the guys downstairs open the box, plug it in and the kick-off script installs the altiris client service.  Maybe takes them 3-4 minutes of clicking in a web-page to custimize a machine for a specific user/team.  Half an hour later suzy from sales has a new lappy with all her client apps ready to go.   Four years later we return to sender and they start showing up as refurbished machines at local computer stores.

SBS 2011 Standard Console Changing User Groups Not Always Assigning Correct Group

Using SBS Standard 2011. In the SBS Console when I change a user from Standard User to Standard User with Admin Links, I find no change in the account "powers".  Looking in AD I see that the user has not been added to the Windows SBS Admin Tools Group. I'll add them to that group manually through AD, and then it's fine. Also, have this same issue when I grant the user RWA access via the SBS Console. I'll have to go in through AD and confirm they are in the Windows SBS Remote Web Access Users group. If not, I add them manually in AD. Finally, when creating a new user in SBS Console, I always elect the folder redirection option to move the users Documents folder to the server. Then I'll have to go into AD and confirm they're a member of the Windows SBS Folder Redirection Accounts group. Sometimes they are, sometimes not.

 With all three of these issues, sometimes it all works flawlessly through SBS Console, other times it doesn't. Weird. Is this because changes, additions don't "take" until the next GP update maybe? If so, then I'm okay with it and can always do a gpupdate /force when I can't wait.

Hi,

Changes take place realtime. No GP update required for this to show up in console or AD snapin

By default even STD user has access to windows SBS remote Web Access Users Group

You said it works intermittently. When it stops working, rename changeuserrole.log in  C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs. Reproduce the scenario and check the log file again.

Do you also get any kind of warning in the wizard?

Refresh scenario USMT problem....

Hi all,

we were working on replace scenario on one of our client sites and it was a requirement that the remote desktop connection.lnk should not be present in accessories folder in the win 7 machine.

so we captured an image of win 7 with this file removed.

Now we are using this image in replace scenario and after the restore user state step the RDP shortcut appears again in accessories folder.

we are using an xml file to exclude this,rdp.xml :-

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<migration urlid="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/rdp">
<component type="Documents" context="System">
<displayName> Remote Desktop </displayName>
<role role="Data">
<rules>
<exclude>
    <objectset>
        <pattern type="File">%CSIDL_COMMON_PROGRAMS%\aCCESSORIES\[Remote Desktop Connection.lnk]</pattern>
    </objectset>
</exclude>
</rules>
</role>
</component>
</migration>

Now when we are trying this file in local lab it working fine & rdp is not migrated but when we are trying this in client site it get's migrated it seems like this file is not used.we are including this file in the capture user state step in the capture ts.

Is it a permission issue or what else could stop the execution of this file ?

Local & client site lab setup is same.

Thanks

Pranay.

Make sure to configure the cs.ini file to:

1. Use additional templates (OSDMigrateMode=Advanced)
2. Specify the additional templates (OSDMigrateConfigFiles=Miguser.xml,Migapp.xml,MyExtraStuff.xml)
3. copy the templates to your USMT package and update the DP

Sample cs.ini

[Settings]
Priority=Default
Properties=OSDMigrateConfigFiles,OSDMigrateMode

[Default]
DoCapture=NO
ComputerBackupLocation=NONE
BDEInstallSuppress=YES
MachineObjectOU=ou=workstations,dc=deploy,dc=net
OSDMigrateMode=Advanced
OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions=/ue:*\* /ui:DEPLOY\*
OSDMigrateConfigFiles=Miguser.xml,Migapp.xml,MyExtraStuff.xml

[Sharing] A Solution for System Notification Error

I see this often enough but I found a solution that seem to fix this issue.

I simply do the following:

1. Rundll32.exe Advapi32.dll

2. Rundll32.exe Advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

3. Reboot

4. netsh winsock reset (if this spawns an error message, do step 2 then repeat this step)

5. netsh winsock reset catalog

6 reboot

This may look silly but is works more often then not.

Hope this helps.

Snap Feature (4 Windows)

I think that the snap feature should be able to snap 4 windows instead of the current 2. There is thousands of times I use more than 2 windows. You should be able to snap to the left, right, or any of the 4 corners. (With this you could also easily snap 3 windows into place as well, one on the left half, one in the top right, one in the bottom right). Anybody else agree?

Reply:
Yeah, why not. Options are good.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Ya, I don't see why the four corners couldn't be snap areas, such that a window would be 1/4 of the screen.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Yea, actually it's a good idea. Monitors larger than 20" are very common nowadays, and it should be quite easy to customize the Snap Feature depending on your monitor's size. 17" or less = 2 windows, 19 and greater = 4 windows.

Let's see if Microsoft accepts the feedback.

Great idea!  I'm not sure how they'd do it with keyboard shortcuts, but for mouse users I guess you'd just drive the pointer into the corner rather than the left or right edge.

Nice one!

Uh oh - I've just realised it may not be as simple as that.  The start orb occupies the pixels right into the bottom left corner, and the Show Desktop button occupies the bottom right.

Maybe you'd have to hold down a key whilst pushing the pointer into a corner?

cregan89 - have you got any ideas on how it might actually be implemented?

------------------------------------
Reply:
I know what you mean, but if you actually take a window right now and try dragging it to the bottom left or right corner you'll see that it's actually not a problem. If you're dragging a window your mouse pointer will only go as far as the toolbar and won't go past it so it should work fine.

Also, I would think that Microsoft would make it so that there was a little give between how far up or down the screen you must move the window to make it snap to a corner. Maybe like 20 pixels from the taskbar makes it snap to the bottom left, 20 pixels from the top makes it snap to the top left, and anywhere inbetween snaps it to the entire left half of the screen.

Oh and hey! I said the idea first! And I would love a co-op position at Microsoft for my current undergrad software engineering co-op program!! haha

Yeah, this would be nice. I also sent feedback that there should be a way to snap 2 windows top/bottom. I often need this kind of tiling.

That's funny, it's different with mine.

If I drag a window to the bottom left corner, the pointer goes right over the taskbar into the corner, taking the window with it.

If yours is different, I wonder if it varies depending on the graphics driver.

HOWEVER, I think you are right: it doesn't matter.  Because when dragging a window the Orb and Peek areas don't respond, so you could still use your system for snapping to a corner.

Good for you for saying it first!  Just don't be surprised if MS haven't thought of it already.  I've been reading some of the blogs and White Papers, and they've done loads of clever stuff - some of it quite off-the-wall - with the UI in the past.  Often the ideas get abandoned for being too weird for the average PC user.

Whatever, I hope your idea gets implemented.  Make sure you send it in via Send Feedback, too.

If you don't mind changing OS, Kubuntu (Linux that is easy to use) runs fine, just make sure you use the Wubi installer (if you don't know what your doing) if you want to run exe or msi files (Windows software) on it, get Wine from the Muon Software Center and it'll work.

With this OS, you'll be able to use corner-snap no prob, and nothing more to install.

BTW, installing Kubuntu does not hurt or delete the Windows OS, it's Dual-Boot

If an OPEN-SOURCE OS can do it, Microsoft should do so too!!!

Windows 7 RC/Release - Conficker Patch Checks

I'm running RC, ran the beta as well. My companys VPN software checks for the Conficker patch. With Windows 7 RC, there is no patch available. The VPN software is denying me access and locking my account.
 I'm assuming 7 is prepatched/coded. With beta, there was a patch that could be installed.

Am I completely missing something? I'm not finding any information on the conficker patch status of RC/Release.

Reply:
I would assume that win7 does not have the patch already installed, however, I have no clue if it is or if it isn't...

The Conficker worm uses the server service to get in, if you don't use it, you can always disable it (although it runs file and print sharing over intranet, so I doubt you can disable it)

Here is the patch for XP:
http://www.tinyurl.com/958644

Patch for Vista:
http://www.tinyurl.com/vista958644

MS bulletin where you can download the patches for 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003, 2008, and the 64-bit versions.
http://www.tinyurl.com/msb08-067

However I don't see a win7 or server 2008 r2 patch, but I wonder if the Vista patch will work?

For other readers:

If you are worried about being infected you might try the test featured here: http://www.tinyurl.com/cp9ew5
Conficker blocks access to A/V sites, so if you cant see the pictures in the top row of pics, you may be infected.

Note: To see the links I am leading you to, use "preview.tinyurl.com" instead of the normal url.

I'm not worried about being infected (Conficker on Vista+), my problem is the current VPN software looks for a conficker patch when there isn't one.
I tried installing all of the above patches and got the 'not for this os' error.
I can't get on the VPN and I get locked out immediately.
I'm trying to determine if MS really didn't put the Conficker patch on an OS that was released after the scare or if I can tell the company to mod there checks.

Just need some kind of real guidance =)

Thanks!
