MDT integration after SP1 installation
Just thinking, is it worth it to integrate MDT into ConfMgr 2012 after the official SP1 will be released and I´m going to update the site server with it. Currently before SP1, I might have 2 benefits of MDT integration - reliable USMT hardlink and UDI. Though, SP1 will bring lot of improvements specially in OSD. Also, I´m thinking will there be newer release of MDT, after SP1 release? Or will ConfMgr 2012 SP1 and MDT 2012 Update 1 be compatible?
I´m also very intrested in UDI, but will be something like that in ConfMgr SP1? At least boot images would have some optional files available to import....
How do you plan your SP1 update? Does your enviroment have MDT integration?
Reply:
i can't think of any reason not to integrate it, it makes doing OSD much easier, for example roles and features or Server Operating systems is a breeze when you have MDT integrated,
I would imagine that there'll be a corresponding update to the current MDT release when SP1 does finally ship (however I could be wrong...)
cheers

Just wondering, what will happend if MDT 2012 U1 will be installed after SP1 release? Will it work? Will the existing OSD enviroment work? Or how about updating 2012 RTM + MDT with SP1?
Has anyone any experience on that?

Others or generating an 0xc000005 error and stopping...
ole32.dll failing module ....
And I'm sure that the backup is reliable even if windows backup says that it was succesfull...
I tried restoring just the apps files ... but it looks more complicated than this ...
If someone has any idea....
I just opened an expensive Microsoft Ticket to handle this, and i'll post information as soon as MS technician will contact me.
but if someone has already met the problem...

importing .pfx certificate into a different users store
Hello all,
I have an install script to be used on Win7 machines that uses certutil to import a pfx file. The script is run when logged in as admin but the certificate is used when logged in as a standard user account. When I make the call it seems to install the certificate in the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" of both users. I need to also install a pfx. into the Personal store of the standard user account. Is there a way to do this with certutil in a script that runs while logged in as the admin account?

However, when I click on the power button on the Settings charm, my only option is "Disconnect".
I did locate a way to create a shortcut to put a computer to sleep, and I placed the shortcut on my Start page, but why don't I see this open (along with Shut Down and Restart) when I click on the power button?

Hi,
I think you need to give us some more information:
- How often are the pictures viewed?
- Are the pictures edited directly to that server?
- Are the 20 users you mention the only users or are these the only one who can view the pictures.
In my opinion I should use a separate server, you don't want others have problems because of excessive load to the server DC because of viewing or editing pictures.

Things about Server 2012 that have to be said
Dear Admins and Microsoft,
for the last days i had to set up a complete new windows 2012 and 8 envoirement. It was such a pain that i am asking myself what the hell the guys in the windows server team are smoking!
And it is not about the much discussed new UI. Thats ok. Actualy i like it.
So please Admins, tell me: am i the only one who does not find any sense in the following:
- Why can't i send emails from the event log anymore?
This is a very important function for some of us. Is it that difficult to keep simple things?
- Does anyone keep that strange IE protected mode?
- Why the hell does a 2012 server and the default windows 8 client have that extreamly, ultra paranoid security settings???
You need a lot of config time just to get it back to the non domain windows client defaults.
- Why do you remove all the cool features of RDS?
- Create MSI Files for WebApps to push it via GPO or Intune (Dont tell me use web feed. Does not work for most smaller envoirements !!!)
- RD Configuration MMC has been removed?? Where shoud i set up my advanced RD server settings??
- Why the hell do i have to use Powershell for so much tasks? I have bough a Windows! Not a Shell. Is MS to lazy to implement UI??
- I dont want to be told i should just use system center for everything.

2. Ideally speaking, one shouldn't be browsing the internet from a server console. That opens a wide door to all kind of risks, that's why MS wisely set those
"ultra-paranoid" settings on W2012.
In fact, most UNIX, Linux, OS/400 and mainframe administrators are reluctant (or plain denied) to browse the internet from their servers, they prefer (or are forced)
to do it from their admin client PCs.
Furthermore, most server tasks (excepting OS patching and hardware-related tools) should be performed from a client, there's no reason to open
AD, Exchange or SQL GUI consoles right on your server when that can be safely done from your client.
GUI consoles take much more RAM and CPU than Powershell sessions, and tend to hang-up far more frequently than text-based shells.
I know sometimes there's no choice (like some pieces of software that require to be activated from a browser session right on the server console), but that's not ideal.
5. In fact, it's related to #2. If you don't like Powershell, you can manage your server from a client with all the proper client-GUI tools (like SSMS for SQL Server, Active Directory Management Center for AD, etc)

Despite the rather vulgar language, I will try to respond.
1. You can receive emails. Just might take a bit more to set up. http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2010/06/16/getting-event-log-contents-by-email-on-an-event-log-trigger.aspx
2. IE protected mode. Most datacenters have strict rules about browsing the internet from the datacenter. Sometimes it is needed, but to ensure that it done rarely and securely, Microsoft responded to customer requests.
5. You can still do just about everything from the GUI if you want to. Yes, there are some things that require PowerShell, just like there used to be things that could only be set in the Registry. Again, customers have been asking for more and more automation capabilities, because automation drives costs out of operations, the fastest growing portion of IT budgets. PowerShell is about the best scripting language to accomplish this. It seems like partners think so, too, because they are all adding their individual libraries to manage their software/hardware components in a Windows environment.
6. System Center is a suite of tools that provide a lot of integrated management capabilities. They are optional. You can still do a lot of management with the built-in tools of Windows. It just requires some assembly. But you would be hard-pressed to find any other environment that has so much built-in without the need for additional products, but many customers have found that it is more efficient for them to look at packaged solutions when their management needs get to be more sophisticated.

It's good to share feedback; Microsoft watches forums and other public places to gather this type of frustration. I share some of your complaints, remote desktop session shadowing, for example was a feature I used frequently. On the other hand, I agree with many of the comments made above. These are enterprise products which are built to be as secure as possible. History tells us that the biggest security risk to systems are the people who operate them! Its sad Microsoft has to engineer to the "dumbest common denominator", but I guess as a society, we've brought this on ourselves, by years of pressuring Microsoft to make things more secure.

It doesn't seem that he is vulgar, just very angry. And I agree with him. The Metro whatever UI on server platform?! Bad idea. Really bad idea.
1. If I need to spend more than 60 seconds in Event viewer to configure to send me some mail than its useless. This should be simple task to do, without any scripts, opening Task Scheduler...
2. I don't keep IE protected mode. At my company we are a bit relaxed considering this. I agree with Tim that it should be on but its no big deal to turn it off.
5. Considering GUI and powershell, to me it seems that the situation is better than with server 2008/2008R2. The powershell is very powerfull (as the name suggests). It simplifies a lot of tasks.

PowerShell Script - Recursively Set / Replace Owner on all Files and Folders for a Given Path
I just finished my first Powershell Script and thought I'd share for peer review and / or to help others out there trying to do the same thing. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions on how I could have done this better.
Is there a more suitable property to output the path without the Microsoft.PowerShell.Core prefix?
Write-Host "Owner Set -" $_.Path
Returns:
Owner Set - Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::\\COMPUTERNAME\C$\FolderName\FolderA
I'd also like any advice on adding error-handling /output to the script.
#PowerShell Script - Recursively Set / Replace Owner on all Files and Folders for a Given Path
$Path = '\\COMPUTERNAME\C$\FolderName'
$ntAccount = New-Object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount("Administrators")
Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $Path -Force -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Get-Acl |
ForEach-Object {
$_.SetOwner($ntAccount)
Set-Acl -Path $_.PSPath $_
Write-Host "Owner Set -" $_.Path
}
Reply:
Hi MS Mike,
Use the Split-Path Cmdlet to display the path; this Cmdlet’s NoQualifier flag will remove the <Char>/<String> to the left of the first : - or pair of -found in the Path argument passed to it.
$path = Split-Path $_.Path -NoQualifier
Write-Host Owner Set - $path
# or simply
Write-Host Owner Set - (Split-Path $_.Path -NoQualifier)
Can you be more specific on the error you want to handle? PowerShell handles terminating errors with either the Trap or Try/Catch/Finally statements. To handle a non-terminating error wrap it in a terminating error by setting the $ErrorActionPreference – or the Cmdlet’s ErrorAction parameter – to Stop, then handle it with either the Trap or Try/Catch/Finally statement.
For more on error handling, pass these subject names to the Get-Help Cmdlet:
about_Errors
about_Try_Catch_Finally
about_Trap
about_Break
about_Continue

3. sysprep /oobe / generalize /shutdown /unattend:unattend.xml
4. imagex /capture /compress maximum (hard drive) (USB Drive\install.wim) "name" *Build"
5. copy install.wim to the sources folder on usb stick
6. Deploy newbuild using autounattend.xml from usb stick
Unattend above has copyprofile
PROBLEMS
NOW, some settings dont come across on deafult profile, such as screen resolutiuon, automatic updates, sound (i know updates can be done by gpo)
However, it does apply desktops icon, pinned start menu, application updates disabled etc but the above is not been saved on the default profile
Questions
A. Can any one tell me why is this happening
B. Should I be use using Mandatory profiles or should the above process work.
c. Could it bt my autounattend.xm (used for deploying new build )l is causing this problem or it it that the default profile does not retain screen resolution .
I know you can resolve these issues in MDT & SCCM but why cant I resolve this from a standalone USB stick ??
Please advise

Homegroup on Windows 8
Hello,
I have a Windows 8 laptop and Windows 8 Tablet, both are connected to the same network and on the same subnet. Both machines can ping each other and connect to the internet without any issue. When I attempt to add them both into the same homegroup they are unable to. Whichever I create a homegroup on the other is unable to detect the homegroup and therefor cannot join it. Previously it had worked from the laptop creating it (changed location sense so had to remake the homegroup as did not work in new location) and from the tablet creating it (Reinstalled windows on the laptop sense and it was unable to rejoin sense) I preformed the format today and have tried creating the homegroup on both ends several times and have reset both the router and access point. It's a rather annoying issue as I use the homegroup to play my music and videos saved on the laptop and not my Microsoft account across my other devices (Tablet and Xbox 360). My videos on my Microsoft account still are accessible from all devices at all times during my testing through Xbox video app. It should also be noted that I am having periotic connection issues when more then one device is using the internet in the house at a time, I believe that to be caused by either the router or access point in my new location but am unsure, I don't know if that may be the cause of my homegroup issues as even when all devices are working fine the homegroup is still inaccessible. As well I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum but my browser is not currently allowing my to view or select any specific forum if I choose a different forum category from the default one. When viewed with Win Explorer Win 7 Pro computers don't show properly on domain
I've experienced a very frustrating problem which started about two months ago. There are 10 workstations connected to the local domain (Server 2003 Std). Only one workstation is running on XP Pro. The others are all Win 7 Pro. From the XP computer the entire list of workstations/server are showing under network in Windows Explorer and all mapped drives appear and work as well. No problems here or on the server either.
From any given Win 7 workstation, using Windows Explorer all the previously mapped network drives are visible and accessible. However, when I use Windows Explorer and go to Network only a random number of connected workstations show up. The Server is not visible from any of them and other workstations show only 2 to perhaps 4 of the possible 10 computers. The workstation I'm doing this from may are may not appear in the truncated list of computers.
I have tried many of the suggestions in the various forums, but I have yet to discover a solution to this issue. If there is anyone out there that may have a resolution, I would be extremely grateful.

Hi,
Try enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both computers:
1) Go to "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections".
2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties.
3) Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4" in the list.
4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced.
5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to "WINS" tab.
6) Under NetBIOS setting, click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP", and then click OK.
Also, boot the Windows 7 to clean boot to exclude the third party factors.

Document Scanning in RDS on a budget
We are looking for a document scanner recommendation in the $200-$300 range. We need it to have a configurable 'scan to' button from the device that can scan to a network share, connection can be either network, or connected to a worksation via usb. The office has two locations and the scanner will be at the satellite location, where the workstations log into a Windows Server 2008 R2 terminal server via RDS. There is a VPN between the two locations, so that is an option for getting the scanned documents transferred to the server, but we are concerned about the impact that will ahve on bandwidth.
We cannot use either an Epson or HP product that requires their management software to run the scanner, as we have attempted to set those up with little success. Our preference would be for any management to be done through the scanner's interface and for the documents to send over the network with smb, but something that uses a lightweight management software that works better than the HP Solution Center would be acceptable. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Upgrading from EPM2007 to EPM2013
Hi,
I am working on a project which is about upgrading existing EPM2007 to EPM2013 for a logistics firm. Their existing infrastructure has one server farm containing one MS SQL Server and one EPM server. I have never worked on EPM2007 before.
I have meeting with client in a few days and was thinking as to what points do I have to keep in mind when doing upgrade? Like any questions that I should ask client to clarify requirements? Any other specific points related to upgrade?
Thanks
Reply:
Ok in addition to what I asked above, do you think rather than upgrading from 2007 to 2013 (because there are no Mircosoft tools available for direct upgrade), I should first upgrade 2007 to 2010 and then from 2010 to 2013 using Microsoft tools? Is it a good idea.

Hi Frank,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff603507 describes the technical processes. Keep in mind you are going from WSS3.0 to SharePoint 2013, and from 4 DBs in Project Server 2007 to 1 in 2013. You have to go via a Project Server 2010 conversion.
There is so much that could go wrong, I would be tempted to manually move projects and docs from one system to the other. This allows for a santity check of and clear out of the old projects and sharepoint sites.
If the customer has customised in anyway the sharepoint sites, then this is also likely to be an area which requires much testing.

Ben is correct, you have to go via 2010 and that even through database attach approach, as in-place is no more supported in 2013. Do check this site as well, have some other info that might be helpful.

Windows PowerShell for Beginners
Hi Folks,
Windows PowerShell is in its third incarnation, and there are lots of great resources now available to help us exploit its tremendous power. I've used several of them, but I just came across what I consider to be the best introduction to PowerShell ever.
This is a video of a presentation given by Jeffrey Snover (the inventor of PowerShell) and Lee Holmes (a member of the Windows PowerShell team) which was made at TechEd Europe 2010. After viewing this presentation, everything just clicked for me, and I now have a far better understanding of the power of PowerShell, and how to leverage that power for my administrative tasks.
The presentation is available for online viewing or download on Microsoft's Channel 9 website, at the following address:
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/Europe/2010/WSV301
I hope you gain as much from this presentation as I did. Enjoy.

Create a "SQL Server Login Dialog" with ADO via Visual C++ ?
Is it possible to invoke the SQL Server or System API and create a login dialog via Visual C++ 2008, so that the end user can select which server he want to connect, as well as the user/password, just like the "Connect to Server" dialog in SQL Server Management Studio:
I don't want to create a dialog manually, since this will take a lot of tasks, including detecting the available servers.
Based on other's answers, it seems that ODBC provides such a feature. Then how to do so via ADO and Visual C++? Thank you.

Hello,
The Connection form used by SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS in a shorter way ) is relying on SMO ( SQL Server Management Objects ).SMO is not supporting unmanaged code ( which is currently used with VC++ ). Moreover, i have very few code samples in VC++ for SMO
I found a thread a little similar to yours : http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vcgeneral/thread/099b2606-0336-49ef-a051-777150923eb1
But you may try to do with ODBC but you will not have the access to the Server Type ( Database Engine, Reporting Services , Integration Services,... ) as it needs the use the ServerConnection class which supports only the SqlClient class ( if my memory is not too bad as my last tries are from 3 years ago ).
I would suggest that a moderator moves your thread towards one forum related to VC++ ( i prefer to wait for your agreement before doing this move )
Just a little question : ADO = ADO.Net or the old ADO used with VB 5 or 6 ?
A little remark : SQL Server 2005 is no longer supported by Microsoft ( even thru extended support ).I would suggest you to upgrade quickly to SQL Server 2008 or 2008 R2.
Have a nice day

Don't forget that you can include in a project code written in languages different from the language used to create the project
Have a nice day

What If There Were a Windows 8 "Ultimate"?
Imagine the Ultimate edition that never was.
This hypothetical beast would have all the best stuff from Enterprise and Pro, nothing more. Everything would be bundled in. Of course, it would be incrementally more expensive to cover Microsoft's costs for proprietary codec licenses, etc.
There are things in Enterprise I like, but the volume licensing model doesn't seem to suit me. Basically I have a need for one copy. Pro, even with a free Media Center, doesn't compel me to upgrade.
So...
Basic question for those still sitting on the fence (i.e., who haven't yet bought Windows 8):
If a Windows 8 Ultimate upgrade became available, say for the same price Windows 7 Ultimate was a few years ago, would you buy it?
Would having the best of all worlds be enough to push you off the fence?

Windows 8 is already the "Ultimate" operating system whether one has the original Windows 8 or Windows 8 Professional!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
You are hilarious!
Windows 8 Home - Won't join a domain among other issues.
Windows 8 Enterprise - Can't add media center
Windows 8 Professional - Can't utilize Direct Access, Windows 2 go, and other features.
So no, Carey, none of the current Windows 8 offerings are "ultimate".

Could it be that you're using "Ultimate" per the most common definitions of the word? The following is courtesy Dictionary.com:
ul·ti·mate [uhl-tuh-mit]
(first definition as) noun
Sounds positively terminal!
In all seriousness, you should evaluate the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation version some time, Carey. It's more of a serious OS than those you mentioned (within the confines of anything running the Metro/Modern toy interface). I could live with Enterprise, since I personally have no use for Media Center. Wasn't there something else you can't do in Enterprise, though? I can't remember.
I need to figure out the intricacies of Volume Licensing to see if it can be practical in any way.

I am currently running Windows 8 Enterprise. It has the same Modern Start Screen as other Windows 8 editions. I personally find accessing programs, files and features quicker than the old Start Menu found in older Windows versions,

Good for you! Fortunately there are good solutions for us all, but that's not what this thread is about.
Would you buy an Ultimate edition instead of Enterprise if you could for, say, home use? Do you have any need for or desire to use Windows Media Center or the features that only Enterprise provides? Or have you arranged volume licensing in such a way that you use it on your home system(s)? If so, could you please give the briefest overview of the approach to such a licensing arrangement? I understand there are some decent "step up" deals. As I've mentioned, since I don't need nor want WMC, Enterprise would be my Windows of choice.

A regular soap opera, this place is.
I set an option to put this screen up during every bootup...

No, I haven't tried to change the color scheme. It works well enough that I can see it, though I agree it could be better.
