Microsoft Cert Observation - Funny!
Notice something missing in the subset list of available exams below?

I suspect that the Microsoft certification team avoided that number. I bet it would be the toughest exam of all, 70-666!

Windows reboot frequency vs Linux reboot frequency

Based on what research to you find this to be true? Cite a study please, without a study to back up this claim i find this nothing more than bashing based on perception.
If you are just going off of general appearances, i would say this.....the user base of Windows OS's is larger, and caters to a wider range of skill sets (than Linux)...particularly at the lower end of the spectrum. In my opinion Microsoft has always marketed thier OS to the masses (on tv comercials and in print ads, etc.), while Linux doesn't, its has more of a niche. That marketing has led Microsoft to many, many more customers than Linux has. From that alone its not hard to figure out why your quertion is more about preception and not relality. Take all those users and put them in a Linux environment....see what happens then.
Now if you compare users of equal skill sets of, ones that follow good install practices, understand how the OS works, patch on a regular basis, virus scan, etc. I beleive you would find that Windows OS is very comparable to Linux in its need for reboots. However, without a study to back this up, its just conjectur for sides to argure.
An interesting Study would be to something like this on both OS's, install 30+ applications, run for 30 days, use for 2-3 hours per day, apply a years worth of patches over the 30 days (not all at once), same thing for virus updates, etc. Then see which OS needed to be rebooted more often. Then you have a good case.
Note: in statistics 30 is the minimum sample size you need to compute standard deviations, more than 30 is ideal.

so getting back to the question posed, why does windows require rebooting more than linux? the registry is one reason,it requires resources to be freed so it can be updated, dlls are another reason ,linux does not have to be rebooted for such reasons, and with ksplice, even the kernel can be patched in memory,so that linux can stay up indefinitely.
linux is used on millions of hand held devices and servers world wide, and the US government uses it for nuclear submarines and government servers, they rejected windows because of its unreliability.

Exchange 2010 mail flow issue
Dear experts,
Environment: Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 mixed
Servers: Exchange 2003, Exchange 2010 (HT/CAS/MBX) ,2 Edge server [C, D] and 2 smarthost [A, B]
Issue: When an email is sent from exchange 2k3 mailbox it send it using SMTP connector configured with smarthost A,B
When an email is sent from Exchange 2010 mailbox is doesn't talk to smarthost but rather talks to Edge server [C,D]
We disable the edge sync connector [was created by default when edge was subscribed with HT] to force outbound email from 2k10 mbx to use smarthost [A, B]
But now, the emails from exchange 2010 mailbox are being sent using HT of other site followed by Edge of that site
My exchange 2010 sits in Site US and Edge connector we disabled were also in US. the connector whichit now using on its own is for HT server in Australia.
Please note that the connector we have configured to send outboud email using smarthost [A, B] has the least cost and the self created edge sync connector have the default cost of 100.
I failed to understand why Exchange 2010 server is not talking the smarthost [A, B] but rather talking to HT->Edge of a different site to send outbound email.
Thanks for your help with this.

Understood, you need to create "Scoped Send Connectors". It is a check box in the Send Connector properties of Exchange 2010.
Refer article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998662.aspx
"When Scoped Send connector is selected, the connector can only be used by Hub Transport servers in the same Active Directory site. When Scoped Send connector isn't selected, the connector can be used by all Hub Transport servers in the Exchange organization."

Thanks for you reply..However I was able to fix it myself
I created a send connector [E2k10 to Internet] with exchange 2010 server as source and routed it via smarthost [A, B] .
The cost was set to 10 and authentication was set to smarthost authentication. We see now emails being routed via smarthost from exchange 2010 server.

Removing a disk in Failover Manager results in ALL resources being moved to Available Storage
When I right click on a disk in either the cluster group view or the storage view and click "Remove from 'cluster group 1'" I'm presented with the following message:
[Window Title]
Please confirm action
[Main Instruction]
Moving 'Cluster Disk 2' to Available Storage could cause clustered resources that are currently using this storage to fail or experience problems. Moving Cluster Disk 2 to Available Storage will also delete its dependency relationships and make it available to other service or applications. Would you like to continue?
[Yes] [No]
When I click [Yes] every resource from "cluster group 1" fails and then moves to Available Storage. That includes Network Names, Services, SQL Server, Shares, doesn't matter. Every resource moves to Available Storage. To make things worse you can only see physical disk resources in Available Storage so you need to utilize the command line or ps command line to move the resources back to "cluster group 1".
We initially saw this during a host of other issues on one of our SQL Server clusters. I have since tested this and found that this behavior happens on every cluster. I've tested on my different cluster builds and whenever a disk is removed every resource moves to Available Storage. I even had a friend at another company test this and he was able to confirm this same behavior.
Is this a known bug in Windows Server? I figure it must be or no one ever removes disks? Any input or thoughts around this would be appreciated.
Reply:
Hi,
I can't test this right now however can you remove all the dependancies on this disk 2 manually before you try to remove it from the cluster group? Not sure how the clustering services completes the operation. It may first take the disk offline, then remove the dependancies at which point it would take the resources that depend on disk 2 offline and then move the disk to available storage. Also when it says "delete its dependancy relationships" - it may in fact only delete what it depends on and not the other way around (which seems wrong but I have never tried this). I always manually remove the dependancies first.

Thanks for the reply. The first time we witnessed this behavior was during an incident with a corrupted volume. So it was chalked up to the corruption causing the issue. We later came to find that the corruption just prevented the warning from displaying.
During testing we removed all dependencies on the disk. Ran a dependency report and then removed it from the cluster group. Warning pops up and then click yes as we've already verified the dependencies are removed. Then everything fails, then moved to available storage.
To further our testing we took a brand new SQL Cluster and added a 1GB disk. I added the disk to available storage. Then I moved it to the cluster group. Then I removed it from the cluster group and the same thing happened. Everything failed then moved to available storage. Prior to even setting up any dependencies at all we ran experienced the same behavior.

Need Windows 7 Driver for Windows Startup Repair
My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8NS, with the two hard drives plugged into the ITE gigaRAID. That's the device that's giving me problems: I downloaded two "preinstall" drivers for it, but they are .EXE files for a floppy, and apparently Windows Startup Repair looks for .INF files (it prompts me for Setup Information).
I think those driver files are on my backup hard drive somewhere. I performed a search for .INF and found hundreds of driver files, so those are intact. I just need to find the right one, somewhere.
My system:
Gigabyte GA-K8N
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.0Ghz
2.5GB DDR
2 80GB hard drives in RAID 0

Hello,
Try to perform the Self Activation of Windows 7 via phone.
Please note, you will need a pen and paper to write the phone and the 48 digit ID number.
Step 1: How to retrieve the Installation ID
================================
1. Log on Windows Vista as an administrator. Click Start, type "SLUI.EXE 4" (without the quotation marks) in the search box, and press “Enter”.
Note: There is a space between "SLUI.EXE" and "4".
2. Select the nearest location, and click "Next".
3. Please click "Continue" when the User Account Control dialog-box appears.
4. The Windows Activation will generate a toll-free phone number, 1-866-740-1256 for US, 1-866-740-1256 for Canada. The installation ID will be displayed in the following format:
xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx – xxxxxx
5. Please write down the phone number and the installation ID.
Microsoft Product Activation system will then generate a confirmation ID and activate Window Vista on your computer. For your convenience, I have included the detailed steps below:
Step 2: Calling the Activation Center
============================
Note: Microsoft Product Activation is completely anonymous; therefore, no personal information is collected. The entire activation process will take about 5 minutes. Your patience is appreciated.
Please listen carefully to the Interactive Voice System's instructions:
1. Select Windows 7
2. Please enter the installation ID when prompted.
3. Please note the confirmation ID for further use.
Step 3: Activate Windows Vista using the confirmation ID
===========================================
1. Please enter the confirmation ID in the Windows Activation box and press "Next".
2. Please follow the onscreen steps to complete the system activation process.
If the windows 7 is OEM version and preinstalled on the computer, you may not use this method to re-active windows 7. You need to contact the manufacturer of the computer.

Hey, there I am having the exact same problem as you described above with windows 7. You mentioned that you used a freeware app to extract the INF files from the EXE files. Where do you get the EXE files from in the hard drive. I still have access to the hard drive when I am running STARTUP REPAIR but it gives me the install drivers instruction and prompts me for SETUP INFORMATION.
Any help would be appreciated

Best Practices for large SCOM Reporting Infrastructure Design
Hi Guys,
i hope you'll have some useful tips for me to design a Custom SCOM Reporting Infrastructure.
I'm a familiar with the default SCOM Reporting, but for me it's too restricted in building custom reports (especially for long-term data).
Here an example of a custom report:
I need to display all objects of a specific class with the associated States of 6 monitors (monitors are located in different SCOM classes) and two perforamnce values of one application. I created a dataset with all the joined tables in SSRS and the query runs in the SQL Management Studio 2 minutes to gahter all the data. In the Report itself it takes 2 minutes too, but it isn't really suitable (performance is more than bad).
I think it makes no sense to create such a reports for long-term data, but i need it.
The idea from my customer was to save the history of the scheduled reports (once a day) in Sharepoint, but im not really happy with the static data.
Therefore I want to build up an own Reporting DB which will filled up daily with SSIS Jobs and import only the needed kpis.
The benefits would be:
- simplification of data collection (Queries against the DW are not needed)
- considerably flexible
- Data from other Sources than OpsMgr can be used
- reduce the workload impact on the OpsDB and OpsDW
- improvement of the performance for on-demand reports (operators can run the reports from the console)
For sure the disadvantages would be the additional data retention and the care expenses.
At many customers the Reporting area is often a part from the SCOM Team and I know that I'm drifting from the SCOM topic to SSRS, .
But sometimes it's easier to collect the data directly with SSIS instead with SCOM.
Can anybody give me a good advice how to handle it? Thx
ah
Web Application which was does not show anymore performance counters
Hello,
Under Monitoring > Winows Service and Process Monitoring > Windows Service State I have a service FIMSynchronizationService which is stated healthy when I right click on it and select Open > Perfromance View I select any of the counters avalable (Private Bytes, miiserver - Percent Processor Time, miiserver, ...) it shows data until 08/28/2012 12:00 AM ONly (we 08/30/2012 12:00pm).
I check on the server it self the performances are available as per now... for all counters so it seems to be linked to something on the service itself ???
Any idea?

Write-Host and Write-Output: Different input parameters result in different behaviour
Consider the following code. I didn't realise this until recently, but one can give Write-Host multiple strings, and it will write them all out on one line. Write-Output also accepts multiple strings, but it accepts an array argument, and so outputs the strings each on its own line:
$string = "Refreshed:" + (Get-Date) Write-Host $string Write-Host "Some" "Text" "And" "Something else" (Get-Date) Write-Output "Some" "Text" "And" "Something else" (Get-Date)
In the first Write-Output, the text is concatinated, and has no spaces. This is to be expected. In the second Write-Ouput, we are simply passing a list of strings, which it accepts as an object, and writes them all on one line. The Write-Ouput accepts the strings as an array, and puts each on its own line. The result from this Write-Output is an array:
PS C:\Users\Administrator> $x = Write-Output "Some" "Text" "And" "Something else" (Get-Date) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PS C:\Users\Administrator> $x.gettype() IsPublic IsSerial Name BaseType -------- -------- ---- -------- True True Object[] System.Array
I just thought this was interesting to point out. Any comments?

I think what you're actually seeing is the difference between write-host and out-host.
Write-output doesn't really write to the console, it passes objects down the pipeline (demonstrated by being able to redirect it's output to a variable).
If you don't tell it what to do with that output, it goes to out-default. The default destination is host.
[string](0..33|%{[char][int](46+("686552495351636652556262185355647068516270555358646562655775 0645570").substring(($_*2),2))})-replace " "

What is with all of the quotes?
This is known as a 'hungry' command. It eaats anything you put on the command line.
Write-Host Some Text And Something else (Get-Date)
Works just the same. Quots are arbitrary things in PowerShell.
This:
Write-Host '"Some" "Text" "And" "Something else" (Get-Date)'
is not arbitrary.
Write-Output, on the other hand, looks like this:
15:40 PS>Write-Output Some Text And Something else (Get-Date)
Some
Text
And
Something
else
Thursday, August 30, 2012 3:40:56 PM
Not really the same at all.
No 'write-host' is a completely different beast from everything else. It was designed to be hungry but not everything works.
Try this:
15:45 PS>write-host x y -z -fore red
x y -z
15:45 PS>write-host x y -f -fore red
Oops!
Now this:
write-host '{0}' -f 3 -fore red
Oops! again.
write-host ('{0}' -f 3) -fore red
3
Hmmmmm...
Do you think there might be some kind of evaluation going on here?

Persisted Cookie Sharing between IE and WebDav
Hello,
Client Integration with CBA. How does WebDAV and Sharpoint Workspace Authenticate?
1.) I have a claims enabled Web App. Persisted FedAuth cookie.
2.) WebDAV: Open Library in Windows Explorer. Change Document.
3.) Signout from the Web Application in IE9. Im using a custom signout page based on(http://online.appdev.com/edge/blogs/doug_ware/archive/2011/05/19/fixing-sharepoint-claims-authentication-and-sign-out.aspx)
basically doing:
FederatedAuthentication.SessionAuthenticationModule.SignOut(); if (Context.Session != null) Context.Session.Abandon();
After that I am still able to open and edit on the Site using WebDAV / Windows Explorer..
I verified the FedAuth Cookie is deleted and even closed the browser. Accessing the site from the browser leads to a new authentication request.
There is some extra session information for WebDAV in the memory?

Filter out AD security group that is not a member of of a group.
I don't think I worded that correctly, but I am trying to create a collection of machines that don't have a firewall policy. My original collection is this:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\WindowsServerFirewallPolicy"
The collection populates fine with that. I made another subcollection and tried to make a subselect query and used the "not in" operation to get the rest of the servers in our domain that are not part of that group. I then pointed to the above query. I get a syntax error when trying to exit out.
select SMS_R_System.ResourceId, SMS_R_System.ResourceType, SMS_R_System.Name, SMS_R_System.SMSUniqueIdentifier, SMS_R_System.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup, SMS_R_System.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\WindowsServerFirewallPolicy"
What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
try this:
Member of Query:
select SMS_R_System.ResourceId from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\WindowsServerFirewallPolicy"
Not member of using the subeselected statement in the Collection Query:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.ResourceId not in (select SMS_R_System.ResourceId from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\WindowsServerFirewallPolicy")
that should do it.

Hi Jorgen,
Thanks for the reply. I "think" its working, but not 100% because it's pulling all machines from the domain now. I only wanted servers since this policy is only applicable to them. I tried adding another memebership rule to that secondary collection to filter by server since we have a mix of 2003, 2008 and 2008 R2:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Caption = "%Server%"
Doesn't seem to work.
Even tried this since it's working on other OS based collections:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from sms_r_system where OperatingSystemNameandVersion like '%Server%'

Hi,
Try this:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_R_System.ResourceId not in (select SMS_R_System.ResourceId from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\WindowsServerFirewallPolicy") and SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Caption like "%Server%"
It should pull all server OS systems that is not a member of the group.

Hi Jorgen,
Progress! It def. cut things down but I think part of my problem was that this second collection (no firewallpolicy) was a subcollection of the firewallpolicy collection. I removed it, recreated it at the same level as firewall policy and used your code. WAY better results. About 35/40 servers higher than I'm used to monitoring but I think it's because of special circumstances. You might have just helped me inadvertently identify "rogue" servers!
One other question now. We have a security baseline group, one for windows2k3 (called W2K3SecurityBaseline) and one for windows2k8 (called W2K8SecurityBaseline). I created the first collection, security baseline with this:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K3SecurityBaseline" or SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K8SecurityBaseline"
I get about a quarter of our servers. About 100ish. Now the part to find those without that group membership:
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_R_System.ResourceId not in (select SMS_R_System.ResourceId from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K3SecurityBaseline") and (SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K8SecurityBaseline") and SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Caption like "%Server%"
It def pulls machines, but only about 85. Numbers aren't jiving. I'm missing about 150-200 servers that should fall into one or the other collections. I think we have a lot more servers that don't belong to that security baseline collection, so the number should be higher. But it's not.

Hi,
I think your second query for servers without group membership should like this:
SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_R_System.ResourceId not in (select SMS_R_System.ResourceId from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K3SecurityBaseline" or SMS_R_System.SystemGroupName = "TIGA\\W2K8SecurityBaseline") and SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Caption like "%Server%"
Thanks

SP 2010 workflows aren't regsitering item changes in date

I should specify that these alerts are counting down to a calendar event.
It looks like this:
Add -7 days to Current Item:Start Time (Output to Variable:date)
then pause until Variable:date
If Current Item:Create Date is less than or equal to Variable:date
Email Recipients:LegalContracts
the steps are the same throughout only the time changes to -3, -2, -1, and 0, and for each one the Variable changes to date1, date2, date3, and date4, respectively.

Reply:
it looks like your due date change is not reflected in the WORKFLOW. do one thing when assigning the value to the due date check the current due date of the item to the variable data then if it is not same assign the new value.
this way you every time your workflow starts you will be checking the current value of the due date with the one that is started then pick the recent one....

T-SQL equivalent of distrib.exe
I set up transactional replica and all works fine running distrib.exe with correct arguments.
Now I would like to do same work calling it through a sp or, better, calling some system stored procedure that does same job of distrib.exe.
I have also to know if process ran without errors.
Any help ?
Regards.
Reply:
You can try using xp_cmdshell and then call distrib.exe from your stored procedure.

I dont think there is any other way as it is a different exe.

Hi,
this is exactly what I did too.
However it seems a bit too much enable xp_cmdshell for a user to simply replicate.
Thanks.

Reply:
I didn't exactly understood your requirement in the first place.
But if you just need to get the replication started inside a stored procedure so that a user can start replication at will, then why dont you use sp_start_job stored procedure to start the jobs which replication creates?

Reply:
I already thinked about it ... but it is not so simple to parse sp_start_job output.
Also, I have to assign execute permission to sp_start_job to that user.

I tried some recovery applications to recover my files, and when I recover my files it seems to be corrupted and cannot be opened. I tried many solutions in the internet but nothing worked. Can anyone help me to fix my problem? or can anyone suggest a application that can recover my files?
