Language Pack woes when adding a server to farm
I have a SharePoint farm with one WFE (Windows Server 2008 R2, SharePoint Server 2010) and one database back-end (Windows Server 2008, Microsoft SQL Server 2008).
I want to add another SharePoint Server 2010 as an application server.
When I walk through the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard cannot go past "Server Farm Product and Patch Status" page, because there are language pack files that are not installed. However, my language pack is installed on both servers; in Control Panel, I can see that the same products are installed on both computers.
More info:
In Server Farm Products and Patch Status, it says that "Language Pack for SharePoint [etc] - [My language]" has status "Installed Across Server Farm". Then there is a long list of more or less obscure files that is "Missing on [other server]", like "Microsoft Office Server Proof ([my language]) 2010 ([version number])". I cannot install such files on the other server, because it says that there are no such product installed.

Hi Jazzmanvibration,
When trying to run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard , the wizard was complaining about missing language packs and the CU files, which you confirm had been installed properly and there before installing the CU. To fix this, you could force PSConfig through PowerShell – avoiding the GUI – and it worked like a charm!
psconfig.exe -cmd installcheck -noinstallcheck
In order to properly install these items, you should better do thins in the following order
- SharePoint 2010 RTM + SP1 (slipstreamed)
- Configure Farm using PowerShell
- Office Web Apps RTM + SP1 (slipstreamed)
- Run SharePoint Config Wizard (PSConfig) on all severs
- SharePoint 2010 Server Language Pack RTM + SP1 (slipstreamed)
- Run SharePoint Config Wizard (PSConfig) on all servers
- Install OCT 2011 CU (or current recommended CU)
- Run SharePoint Config Wizard (PSConfig) on all servers (if you get errors here, so additional note below)

Thank you. I'm not quite sure how to use the psconfig command. If I run it, it runs successfully, but then what? There's no difference afterwards, if I run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard, which I must do to install SharePoint nonetheless.
Right now, what I'm working with, is that "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 1033 Lang Pack Core (14.0.6029.1000)" is "Missing on [first server]". When I install language packs (English) (or Service Pack for language pack) on first server says it is already installed.
So the configuration guide says I need to install this and that file, but the servers says it is already installed. Therefore a "-noinstallcheck" seems interesting, but I don't know how to use it.
What is missing on the second server is "Microsoft SharePoint Portal English Language Pack", but good luck googling for that package. -- The whole process is slightly ridiculous.

Need ability to remove approvers from In Progress approval workflow
Hi,
We have customized OOB approval workflow in the Sharepoint Designer in order to change the email layout and text. We also have a need for the below mentioned.
- We need the ability to remove approvers after the workflow has started (In progress) perhaps delete their task and still let the workflow complete with results from rest of the approvers. I wanted to know if this is something that could be achieved using Sharepoint designer. If so, then any pointers would be very helpful.
- When approver opens their task "Delete Item" link appears on top of the dialog/page. Need to remove the "Delete Item" link which appears on top in the workflow task dialog/page.

Suggestion: ability to mark thread as "un-read"
I often filter my view of a particular forum to just the unread posts.
Occasionally, I'll come across a question that I'd like to return to later, but don't have time to respond to right now. It would be great if there was a "mark as unread" button, much like there is in email.
Is this the right place for logging this suggestion, and would others find such feature useful?

I keep very few threads in "My Alert". If I wanted to "bookmark" a thread, I click "Alert Me" to add it to "My Alert".
Since all later replies to these threads will generate new alert to your mailbox, you'll want to keep the number of threads as low as possible, or just don't fill the "alert email" address in the "My Settings" page.

If u've used your Micrsoft's email to order issues, when someone replies u can get the letter in outlook, ur email box……, where there's a un-read state or read state.
And in fact I think u can click "Alert me" on the left corner of the cetain issues, thus u can remember that:D
But urs is also a nice idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will be nice to be able to save some threads in 'My Saved Threads' and be able to also add subfolders to that folder. I suggested this a while ago, but I don't think this was ever considered.

Lync 2010 SE : Ability to report on volume of IM sent and recieved per user
Hi Team,
I have successfully installed Lync Reporting and Archving. However I want to be able to see volume of IM's sent/recieved per user. (or even group per 'location' based on subnet)
I found this blog for OCR (http://blogs.technet.com/b/jitreddy/archive/2008/07/31/archiving-cdr-reporter-tool-and-custom-sql-queries.aspx) but wondered if there was anything for Lync 2010 specifically.
I have looked through the existing reporting dashboard fro Lync but they don't give the info I am after. eg:
- User Registration Report
- Peer-to-Peer Activity Summary Report

There is no standard report that will provide the information you need in terms of group by location. Howeve, all of the data is there so you just need to write a custom SQL query or report.
As for the volume of IMs per user you should be able to use the User Activity Report and filter by Activity Type (Peer-to-Peer) and Modality (Instant Messaging). Of course this really only works for a small number of users. If you want to do it across a lot of users then you are back to a custom SQL query.

Im sure ive just missed a blatantly obvious step but ive been trying to join a win 7 pro notebook with a logon server 2000 domain. i've set the dns and wins addresses then I tried to change to the domain via computer name change. when it asks for my credentials i enter the admin account and password for the server admin but it keeps saying "the account is not authorized to log in from this station" is this a server config error or is there something locally I can try other than the obvious local security policies which I've already been through. Please help!
I just finished going through regedit and changing lanmanworkstation and 'server enablesecuritysignature values to 0 and still not working... is a server reboot necessary?

VMware to Hyper-V Convertion using VMM 2012
Are there any further settings available in VMM 2012 which can fasten the process of converting the VM from VMware host to Hyper-V as it seems to take quite along time.
In our environment it usually takes 12-15 Hours for a VM with 100 GB disk .

Open up your 'unattend.chm' in the Docs directory. Every component is detailed. It is the best resource available.
Afterwords pop over to MSFN.org unattend forum and have a look at the 'Ask your Seven XML here' sticky for some do's and don't's in automating via XML files.

Network Summary Dashboard To Be Fixed in OM 2012 SP1
If anyone else is getting timeouts on the built in Network Summary performance dashboard I was officially told today by Microsoft that it would be fixed in OM 2012 SP1.
I have 150+ devices, the dashboard would not run at all.
Opened Premier case and got the news finally today that its a known issue.

Application Catalog best practices
I am setting up the application catalog, but I want to make sure it's done right the first time. I definitely did not want to install it somewhere that it shouldn't be installed.
My environment looks like this;
1 Primary Site Server
1 WSUS server
1 SQL server
1 SQL Reporting server
27 distribution points
1 management point (part of a distribution point, outside of primary site system server)
Should the application catalog get it's own server, or should there be no problem including it on an existing server?

Adding to what Jason mentioned, you should also consider the expected traffic for each of the components and site roles using IIS, including the Application Catalog. If you expect large amounts of traffic for any of the components/roles, you should consider using separate servers.
