RDP 8.0 client issues with RDP 7.1 RemoteApp
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop in "Per User" licensing mode.
User goes to Remote Desktop Web Access and starts Exel 2010 as RemoteApp on this server.
User then clicks on items in the ribbon that display a drop down menu (for example "Sort & Filter") or right-clicks in a cell. Many times the menu is briefly displayed and then immediately disappears again, making it impossible to use. The problem occurs with Word 2010 as well. The problem is more likely occur if the user has multiple RemoteApps started in the same session.
This problem does not occur in regular Remote Desktop sessions to the same server.
When we got reports of this from users on Windows 7 SP1 we suspected the KB2592687 update, and sure enough, when we uninstalled this update the problem no longer occurs. We then also noticed our Windows 8 users have the same problem.
There appears to be a severe incompatibility between an RDP 8.0 client and an RDP 7.1 server when using RemoteApp.
Has anyone else noticed this problem and is there a workaround other than upgrading our server to Windows Server 2012?

Hi,
RemoteFX and RDP 8.0 enhancements are not available for Windows Server 2008 R2 Session Host. So,before the hotfix, i suggest you uninstall KB2592687 update.

We are seeing a this issue (Not been able to prove it is linked to KB2592687 yet...)
Our users start one app via RemoteApp, this works fine, but then will open a word document, that starts a RemoteApp of Ms Word 2010 in the same session. The RemoteApp of MS word sees the issue where content (right click) menus vanish or disappear a split second after they appear.
Delete of the user profile on the TS does not resolve the issue.

like domain1 ... and domain2 and domain3 are the one which are added as accepted domains ..
now there are two scenarios for DL...
1. creating DL for each domain in exchange .. like domain1 .. domain2..domain3 and each can have their members from the company .. like users from domain1 in first DL .. user from domain2 in second DL and so on ...
2. To have a DL where in say combined ppl from all the domains... means say insurance team DL .. to have members from all .. or may be like sales team .. can have ppl from all the three domains ...

It sounds like domain1 domain2 and domain3 are windows domains and not SMTP domains? Or are they both?
Sounds like you haven't prep'ed the domain 2 & 3 and have simply added them as accepted domain?
Prep them 1st and test again.

So what does "he" get/see?
If the Add-button is active, it might just be a matter of changing the Scope so that all recipients in the forests show.

SBS 2011 is final version - plans for future?
Now that Microsoft has killed SBS, what will the options be for companies with less than 75 users? We support many SBS installations and need to start planning for the future! I hear Microsoft may be trying to limit hosted Exchange to companies are forced to use Office 360.
I personally would like to request that Microsoft reconsider this decision and keep with the SBS line of products.
Any thoughts?

I can't get the link James posted to work, so not sure what it says there. Our firm are SBS end users (and have been since 4.0) and I have given a lot of thought to this question, particularly because we are fairly close to the 25 user limit for Server 2012 Essentials.
The more I think about it, the more I think we will deploy Server 2012 Essentials with a separate Exchange Server. Microsoft is definitely not trying to force anyone to use Office 360 or any form of hosted Exchange - they are responding to the realities of today's marketplace, and believe it or not, many, many firms prefer hosted over on-premises. Regardless, there is good guidance on deploying Exchange in Essentials domains, and there will be more and more as people actually roll this out.
Essentials takes some traditional SBS functions out of the package, but it doesn't stop those who want them from having them. While I personally wish that it still included Exchange, a more objective view might be that those who prefer hosted service should not have to pay for Exchange. And one undeniable thing about Essentials is that it's offered at a super attractive price.
I've been running SBS since about 1998 and I've been an SBS MVP for a while. All this time, people have been saying they wish they could split roles off from the domain controller, or otherwise objecting to what they viewed as tech or licensing restrictions they didn't agree with. Essentials seems to address most, if not all, of the limitations people complained about in prior versions. Consultants are going to be able to offer many more configuration options with Essentials than they ever could with previous versions.
I initially objected to the 25 limit. However, there is now the ability to very simply transition out to the full products. In earlier versions, we had the "transition pack," which I never tried myself but I know was a painful experience for many. Now, it's a licensing thing with a key code, rather than a gigantic app running on a server and trying to somehow "undo" all the SBS customizations.
So I think it's a lot of change, just like Win8 and Server 2012. I don't know why tech old dudes like myself resist such change, but I think that if you really think about the options that Essentials opens up, you will see it for the great opportunity it is. Just the fact that you can continue to offer Exchange, without having to impose it on those who prefer hosted e-mail because it's part of SBS, is a big plus in many cases.

Link doesn't work for me either.
the 'Server 12 that replaces SBS11' is, to me, both more complex and more expensive.
My main disappointment over this is that it is based on the catchcry of 'we shouldn't be doing this all on one box', well, I have news for SBS Dev, this was always the case, with SBS 4.0 having been developed from a package of multiple server components known as MS Back Office Server 4.0. (which wasn't a particularly successful product)
A small group of 'creative rebels' put together a product that 'broke the rules', and gave 'Enterprise Functionality' to SMB. That product has proven to be a successful and reliable product, despite the nay-sayers.
The reality of today however is that 'SBS is dead'.
This disappointment is somewhat offset by improvements in hardware that still allow 'us crazy SMB's' to put all our eggs in one basket. Enter virtualisation.
As I have mentioned elsewhere today the hardware to run a virtual 'Server 12 replacement of SBS11' is not an extravagant expense for SMB, any of the 'Tier 1' vendors have 'basic servers' that will support such at a reasonable price. At this time we are losing out on 'package pricing' for the software that most SMBs saw as an advantage and MS justified by imposing restrictions on the AD (single level forest, no trusts, SBS holds FSMO) that didn't bother SMB implementers, mostly.
I'll mention that _I don't like_ this idea of planning from the outset to implement WS12E and then Transmog to support >25 users while retaining WS12E features. The initial implementation seems fine, but what happens in Xmths when a meteor hits the building, another hits the CEOs home where the off-site backups are stored, and you need to re-create this 'monster'? (while meanwhile having a branch office DC that has a copy of the AD you wish to maintain)
One may not be being 'forced' to the cloud, but certainly the increased complexity of implementation, the reduced 'officially supported user number', and the increased cost of implementation are factors deigned to make the cloud more attractive.
The cloud simply doesn't work for me, nor my clients.
Short term I'll continue to do SBS11. I'll hope against sanity that another group of 'creative rebels' gets the original idea of SBS. and, kicking and screaming, I'll do 'the server 14 equivalent of SBS11', when forced to.

the 'S12 equivalent of SBS11' has DC and Exchange running on separate (virtual) instances, and SharePoint on another.
So three virtual instances in total. Wouldn't you have to install Server 2012 initially to host the virtual instances? Giving four installs of Server 2012 in total?
------------------------------------
Reply:
for those instances the minimum purchase would be a WS12Standard License and WS12Essentials. (+ CALs for both Windows and Exchange, and the Exchange Server license)
The WS12S gives you host (role limited to HyperV) and 2 instances (Exchange and SharePoint) through '1+2 virtualisation rights', WS12E for the DC, remote access, client backup.
For not a lot more you purchase 2*WS12S to get host + 4 instances. One of the virtuals can be 'downgraded' to WS12E, again Exch and SP on separate instances, and the 4th instance is used as RDS and/or LOB Application.
You'd probably 'get away with' a Dell 320 to do this, but I'd rather a 420 (or other manufacturer equivalent).
You then get yourself a HP MicroServer and load it up with 16GB RAM (which shoud be enough to bring up DC + Exch, at a pinch) and set up S12 HyperV Replication from the main box to the HP. Should the main box fail you revert to the replica (5 minutes old?) on the HP and have DC+Exch (a bit slower than usual) while you fix/replace the main box.
In the replication you need additional S12 licenses, because your 4 instances need to be transportable between the two boxes, or you use the free S12 HyperV as host on both. I'd prefer to pay and get full GUI, so I'm looking at 4*S12S licenses (2 hosts and 2*2 movable instances). Very robust implementation though.

Will Forefront Protection for Exchange continue to work when the license expires?
i have FPE licenses that will expire Feb 2014. There is no way to get new (or renew) the licenses after Feb 2014 because MS has announced that new licenses cannot be purchased after Dec 2012. However, the product will continue to be supported until Dec 2015.
So, when the licenses i have expire oon Feb 2014, what happens? will FPE continue to update and work - will i remain protected (until 2015)?

Deployment advice requested
Hello All
With it being he end of the year, I have been asked to get a quote for upgrading our Exchange environment.
Anyway, currently our environment exists of a 2008 R2 Active Directory, a single Exchange 2007 Server hosting all roles. I would like to get a little bit of fault tolerance built in (wasn't allowed to for some reason when setting up the original Exchange '07 environment). We are basically a medium sized company with only 600 mailboxes.
Is moving to 2013 worth it for a company of our size?
Can anyone point me in a direction to where I might find simple deployment scenarios?
Thanks
Reply:
You'll need to do your own cost-benefit analysis; nobody in this forum can or would be willing to do that for you for nothing because it's a significant effort.
A couple of things Exchange 2013 has going for it in your scenario, the most significant being that you can credibly build a completely redundant configuration with just two servers.
One thing going against you is that you can't upgrade right now because the requied update for Exchange 2007 is not yet available (and I don't believe any release data is announced), and Exchange 2013 is an RTM product that may not be feature complete for your needs.
You're welcome to look up deployment scenarios in TechNet.

SBS 2008 Bare Metal Restore Problem
Whenever I attempt to do a restore using the complete PC restore feature after booting the system from the SBS 2008 CD I get an error message saying "There is not enough disk space on the system to reform the restore operation" error code 0x80042408.
The image I am attempting to restore contains the following partitions:
C Drive: 74.4GB total space (with 28.9GB unused)
D Drive: 245GB total space (with 215GB unused)
The drive I am trying to restore them to is a 698GB RAID array so they should both fit easily.
I have followed the advice offered in other threads discussing similar issues:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsbackup/thread/11d8c552-a841-49ac-ab2e-445e6f95e704
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/9a082b90-bd7c-46f8-9eb3-9581f9d5efdd
But have been unable to resolve this problem.
Using diskpart I am able to see the disk/ volume I am attempting to restore too and using wbadmin I am able to see the backup. Using the suggested command:
wbadmin start sysrecovery -recreatedisks -restoreallvolumes -version:<backup-version-id> -backuptarget:<backup-drive:> -execludedisks:<DiskID-to-be-excluded>
Results in the same insufficient disk space error.
I have completed a normal installation on the new system and verified that the backup I am using can be restored from within windows (although obviously this is not very useful as I cannot overwrite the C drive from within windows).
I'm sure I am missing something fairly simple, can somebody please offer some assistance?
Thank you!

I'd like to keep the same site code really but not sure how you would manage it. If you were to add the roles to the new RTM server from the RC server then they would be using the old RC software. SO really wondering if you could:
Upgrade RC to RTM (In place)
Add a new server as a MP and then add all the other roles and SMS provider
Remove all the roles on the RC server.
Move the database.
Can't find any documentation. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Geoff

Running setup.exe would basically upgrade the existing RC version to RTM, but I would not suggest that at all. You have to run some scripts before the upgrade and they are only available to TAP customers. You could set up a new site and export / import "all" objects, but using objects that were exported from RC is also not the best idea ...

Thanks Torsten.
Just trying to find out if they were on the TAP. If they weren't I'll set up a new site and recreate apps etc. They don't have too many.

Exchange 2010 - Enable/Update Linked Mailbox bug on LinkedMasterAccount
Hello,
I would like to share my experience on Enable-Mailbox AND Set-Mailbox cmdlets when managing a Linked Mailbox.
In fact, when I try to Enable or Update a linked mailbox with a LinkedMasterAccount already set for another linkedmailbox, it is not always detected. It is detected if I use the name of the LinkedMasterAccount, but not when I use its SID.
Environnement: Remote PSSession on Exchange 2010 server (Version 14.2 (Build 247.5))
The only solution I actually have that is to convert the SID to Name before enabling OR setting the Linked mailbox. My script is processing 60000 accounts in every cycle, so it takes some long to convert all LinkedMasterAccounts SID to Name (10mins)...
Reply:
This is pretty bad to have 2 MBX set on the same linked user account, dont you just bork the autodiscovery?
Why not linking 1st MBX to the account, and grant permission to the 2nd?
------------------------------------
Reply:
Sure, but I don't try to set 2 LinkedMasterAccount on the same MBX, I just wanted to share this as a bug.
And give my solution as it can be usefull for anyone who must use the SID of the LinkedMasterAccount instead of its name.

Health service not available on SCE server
I'm having trouble with discovery from my SCE2010 serverver. The initial discovery went well and everything seemed to be running OK for the first few weeks but as I've been trying the features out I seem to be running into trouble with the health service on the server.
When I attempt to do a discovery of new machines on the network I get an error message that reads "Health Service 'SCE.police.ctb' in which the location monitoring object is contained is not available. Make sure that the computer hosting the Health Service is available and verify that the Health Service is running."
I've stopped and re-started the service named "System Center Management" since it appears to be the health monitor but that hasn't made any difference. It still appears to be monitoring the 180 odd machines it discovered without any major errors.
Anyone have any ideas? I've just bought into this system and I'm currently frustrated since it won't allow me to do much. It's running on a 2008R2 virtual sever with the database located on a seperate 2008 virtual box.

Hello,
It seems like a same issue with the following one:
Health Service in which the location monitoring object is contained is not available

Strange ROBOCOPY issue on Server 2008 R2
I have no idea where to post this, so I'll try here.
I am migrating a network from Novell to Windows and have encounterd a strange problem using ROBOCOPY. A few months ago, after building the Windows server but before putting it online, I used ROBOCOPY to copy all the files from the Novell server to the Windows server. My plan was to use ROBOCOPY again on the cutover weekend to update the files on the Windows server by using ROBOCOPY with the /XO (Exclude Older files) switch.
A few weeks after making the initial gross copy, I tested my plan a few times and found everything working fine. New and changed files were copied to the Windows server, and all the rest were skipped. An update copy could be finished in a few minutes rather than several days, and so I was all set.
This weekend was cutover, and so I launched the final updating copy. However I found that ROBOCOPY was now copying every file over again. I stopped the copy and investigated. I discovered that the timestamp on every file in every folder on the Windows server was exactly one hour older than its counterpart on the Novell server. No matter what the date or the time was on the Novell file, the Windows file was shown to be one hour older. Given that, it was no surprise that ROBOCOPY saw every source file as newer and so felt it needed to copy them all. (BTW, the timestamp I am referring to is the one you would see running a DIR listing at a DOS prompt.)
So, now, about a week ago, the time changed. But so what. I can't think of any mechanism by which the time changing on the server could cause every timestamp on every file to be altered. Or why the server's OS would feel the need to do such a thing. (This could have happened on the Novell server by advancing every timestamp by an hour, or it could have happened on the Windows server by retarding every timestamp. But I've never know Novell to do anything weird like that.) Am I misunderstanding something about how timestamps are calculated or displayed?
It's academic now because I have recopied every file, but I sure would like to know what happened.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Peter.

Mayby a silly question but did you check if the time of your server is correct?
The change of time a week ago could be the change between summer and wintertime.

Duplication of computers in SCCM console
Hi,
There are lot of computers duplicated in my environment (SCCM R2)with the below cases and none of the clients are obsolete.
1) different Hardware ID
I have gooogled and i find only it happens bacause of Cloning of Harddisks with installed ConfigMgr client, renaming a computer or DualBoot configurations, unknown computer support (not used in our environment) etc.
I have 200 clients with this issue.I dont think above are the reasons for all these systems.
how discovered resources are processed? Will SCCM overwrite the existing record with the new recovered records?
Heartbeat discovery will not create a new record.Only active directory system discovery will create new records.if that is the case, which one is creating the deplicates?
If it is a timing issue, how it happens?
Can some one suggest me on the above things?Atleast can someone give me some links about process of discovery in depth?

Hi,
Here is a great blog post from the Configuration Mnanegr product team on the topic of duplicate records. It also incldues a little script you can use.
Heartbeat discovery will create new records.
I many cases the duplicate objects are a result of System Discovery-delta discovery and Unknown computer support.
Depending on how you reinstall a computer it can also generate a duplicate record..

Thanks for your reply.
The issue occurs because of unknown computer support and delta discovery as per that link.
But
Our environment is SCCM 2007 R2.
We dont have OSD enabled in our environment.
We are not using unknown computer support .
So the duplication in my environment is not because of unknown computer support as i already mentioned above.

Hi,
How do you reinstall computers in your environment? Are you using System Discovery? Duplicate records are created in many other scenarios as well, I use this script frequently to merge duplicate records as they are created.

Thanks for the script.
Ghost is being used for all the machines.
If they didnt take the image properly, then the issue should occur in all machines, right?
We are using System dicovery.
I can resolve it with the script but want to know how and why it happens ?
